INTERVIEW WITH TOM COLSOUL You had to miss Le Dakar 2022 due to a positive Corona test. How is your health now? “Very good, didn’t have much trouble with the Covid. In fact, I could have just driven. Apparently, I was tested at the wrong time. I was going to ride with my fellow countryman Guillaume de Mevius. But after five days I saw in the standings that he was already so far behind in the standings, that the “baling out” for me was soon gone. I am always super driven and would like to navigate at the front.”

You come from a rallying background, with father Guy Colsoul, who was one of Belgium’s top performers at the time. Guy is now 74 years old, how is he doing? “My dad is doing very well. We decided a few years ago to stop renting out rally cars. Apart from car rental, we also had a car wash. Dad still runs it from early in the morning until late in the evening.” This year you have joined the Dakar rally organization ASO and will be setting the route for the coming year together with David Castera. “I have my own view of the rally. With almost 20 years of experience as a navigator, I look at things differently to the current team of scouts. For example, it is important for them to see when motorcyclists need to refuel. I think it is important to find a lot of variation in a rally. This year I am on the road a lot and must make several road books. Since the new world championship came into existence, ASO has been the promoter of the world championship races, and making the road books is also on their list of tasks. As navigators, we have been asking the FIA for years to have the roadbooks of the rallies in the championship made by the same team, so that there is consistency. Of course, I look at the making of a road book much more from the rally car’s point of view.

10

DAKAR PRESS TEAM

And it’s the mix of those different visions that should benefit the route and road book”. “I have just returned from Morocco, where I spent 10 days, working 18 to 19 hours a day, setting up the Rallye du Maroc. When it gets light you start driving and when the sun goes down you stop driving and start the night work on the computer. This was super tough but wonderful to do.” What do you think the perfect route at Le Dakar should contain? “That is a good question. You can’t build tracks or roads if the country doesn’t offer them, so you must make do with the environment. The best thing is to get a mix of all the rallies together. Lots of variety. There should be dunes, gravel, fast slopes, slow parts, and certainly not too monotonous. The mix we had in South America was good. But at a certain moment it was finished there too. If you often ride the same courses, that’s not good either. Saudi Arabia is a very big country, so you can do a lot of different tracks. It has a lot of potential. Sometimes you have moments when it seems like you are driving in Africa again, like the Dakar rally used to be. Moreover, in the future there is the possibility to form a route with surrounding countries. It has to be a combination that everyone can live with: motorbikes, quads, cars, trucks, ssv’s, but especially both the professional and the total amateur. Everyone has an equal right to a nice rally”. You have been involved as a navigator in Le Dakar since 2003. Have you never had the ambition to drive yourself? “No. When I was 18 or 20, my father let me drive a rally once. I am not easily scared, I have few limits and sooner or later, as a rally driver, you make mistakes. Because I have little fear, my role as navigator is just right. I like to guide the driver.

Navigation has changed a lot over the years, in terms of preparation time, but also in terms of equipment. How do you deal with that? “The problem is that a good navigator is a bit autistic and we hate change. But well, there has to be an evolution and especially safety – it should not be undervalued. Driving is much faster now than it used to be. Just look at the classification results of the 80-90s compared to now. Everything has to be right, otherwise it becomes really dangerous. Making a road book like this is a very precise job and ambiguities don’t belong in it.” Will the French language remain the basis for the abbreviations in the road book? “The FIA has been working for a few years to unify the abbreviations in the road book. Last year this led to a mixture of English and French. But Le Dakar is a great tradition, isn’t it? As far as I’m concerned, it can stay French.”

You have navigated in both car and truck. Which one do you prefer? “Difficult question. I enjoyed both very much. I am most grateful to Gerard de Rooy, who asked me to come and navigate with him in the truck back in 2003. My reaction to Gerard was, that I had never done it before, to which Gerard replied: - doesn’t matter, because I am doing it for the first time as well -. We were the Enfant terrible of the Dakar, but we did manage to achieve great results. In 2012 I won Le Dakar with Gerard De Rooy in the truck category. “But there comes a time when you have to choose if you want to go higher up. I got the chance to drive with Bernhard ten Brinke, and that brought me further. It’s just in my nature that if I go for it, I want to win a rally. And from the moment I started navigating in the car, I have been able to make it my profession. So, I am happy and especially grateful that I got the chance to start navigating for Bernhard ten Brinke. A few years later you then get the trust of Sven Quandt and you get to drive for his Mini team for a few years, which means that you are not doing badly at all as a small Belgian.” In 2019 Tom finished fourth in the Dakar, his best result in cars. That year he won the world cross country title with Jakub Przygonski. Two years ago, he won the world title in cross country bajas as co-pilot.

In what way were you able to make a difference in the rally as a navigator. “The nice thing about cross-country rallies is that you can make the difference between winning and losing. If we make a mistake, it can ruin the result. We used to get the road book in the evening. If you studied it well and made the right notes, you were able to win a few minutes. Preparing in the night was one of my great qualities. You get a lot of satisfaction from being able to win a few minutes by preparing properly. Now we have the electronic road book, so that chance has gone. But something really had to be done to stop the cheating. All credit to David Castera for getting this through, because that was a feat”.

JEDDAH The last day of administrative checks and technical scrutineering prior to the start of Dakar 2022 saw a visit to Jeddah’s impressive King Abdallah Stadium by some of the race favourites. The King Abdullah Sports City is a multiuse stadium and sports city located 60 kilometres north of Jeddah and provides the City with a world class football venue – home to Jeddah’s two top teams and regularly hosts matches of the Saudi Arabian national team. For the first time in 10-years, since the start in Mar del Plata in Argentina, the Dakar event will begin on its traditional start date of January 1st. Odds-on favourite, after his victory in last year’s edition of the race, Stéphane Peterhansel is faced with new challenges in 2022. Peterhansel, along with Carlos Sainz and race of champions Mattias Ekström from Swedish, has been recruited by Audi to participate in the first alternativedrive vehicle with its RS Q e-tron.

The Toyota team of Al-Attiyah, De Villiers, Al-Rahji and Ten Brinke form a fourpronged charge in Hiluxes, bolstered this year by a rule change which will enable them to run wider tyres and increased suspension travel. In fact, there are a number of strong contenders for Dakar 2022 podium finishes including the likes of Sébastien Loeb, ‘Nani’ Roma, ‘Orly’ Terranova, Jakub Przygońsk, Denis Krotov, Sebastián Halpern, Martin Prokop, Mathieu Serradori, Cyril Despres, Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi, Christian Lavieille & Johnny Aubert and Guerlain Chicherit. Unfortunately, there’s only room for 10 at the top!

APEX lowering springs are a staple of the tuning industry and with over 40 years of experience, there has been plenty of racing success to prove it. Still, it feels like we are only getting started. This year alone, Kool Racing competed in the Zandvoort Endurance Series with our support and we’ve had the privilege of acting as sponsor and technical partner for the Dutch Dakar Press Team. It is with great pride that APEX presents you with the result of their efforts; a beautiful, hard-cover compendium that offers the very best full-color photography ever captured from the most challenging race on the planet. Here’s to you and to creating the next 40 years of excellence, together.

apexsuspension.com

The benchmark for lowering springs APEX’s iconic yellow springs have proven themselves on the racetrack, on the road and sometimes even off-road (as evidenced by the impressive volume you now hold in your hands). There’s more than just one reason to go with a spring setup from our high performance catalog. For the Dakar Press Team, heavy duty springs provide stability and longevity. On the racetrack, improved grip and handling are obviously tantamount. And there are cosmetic reasons to consider: lowering a car by just the right amount does wonders for its appearance. King of Private Label Manufacturers from across the globe count on our craftsmanship and expertise to optimize and stock their replacement spring programs. The great news

is that the same proven private label solutions are available for our high performance lowering spring offerings. If you are interested in either starting or expanding your performance catalog, APEX product managers will work with you to make it happen. Give us a call and we’ll get started.

UNEXPECTED REUNION Toyota driver Yazeed al Rajhi has been working towards his Dakar participation for months. The same cannot be said of his teammate Bernhard ten Brinke, who had planned to skip this edition of Le Dakar. Shortly before the start of the rally, Dutch Toyota driver Erik van Loon turned out to have a positive Covid-19 result. Van Loon was very sporting, and made his ticket for participation, including the very well prepared Toyota Hilux available to ten Brinke. He didn’t have to think twice about this offer, and therefore unexpectedly he will be at the start of Le Dakar 2022 after all.

Le Dakar versus Dakar Classic The 2022 edition distinguishes itself from previous editions. This year it seems that there are two Dakar rallies, each with their own charm. One the one hand, there is the modern Dakar rally (let’s continue to call this “Le Dakar”). Le Dakar started back in 1978 and has evolved to be the fastest, toughest and most dangerous rally in the world. Not as fast, but certainly still a big challenge, we have the Dakar Classic, which pays respect to the heritage of the Dakar rally. Although last year about 21 participants started the adventure in this new form of rally in their classic cars, this year can be

seen as the birth year of the Classic Dakar rally. No less than 142 vehicles will participate in the Dakar Classic, comprising a caravan of 301 competitors. Will the Dakar Classic become more popular than Le Dakar? The statistics of Le Dakar are still very strong. The official list of starters for “Le Dakar 2022” during the administrative checks and technical scrutineering consisted of 409 racing vehicles: including 144 bikes (of which 33 will race in the Original by Motul category); 20 quads; 87 (T1) cars; 2 (T2s), as well as 48 (T3) lightweight prototypes; 47 (T4) SSVs; 56 trucks (T5), and lastly 5 vehicles in the Open

category. Two-hundred-and-six Competitors will be participating for the first time on the Dakar, whilst 121 riders, drivers and co-pilots with “Legend” status will be taking part for the 10th time or more. The contingent of ladies has also significantly increased, totaling 28, including three 100% female crews. As for the nationalities represented, France is predominant with 170 participants, ahead of Spain (74) and the Netherlands (64).

ULTIMATE TEST FOR MAN AND MACHINE

HA’IL HA’IL Rain, mist, sandy trails, mountains, rocky tracks and dunes were all on the agenda for today’s stage. Time to get serious as the terrain is set to test competitors and vehicles alike.

Coming out on top today in the bikes – Aussie, Daniel Sanders riding for Gas Gas with just over two minutes to spare from 2nd place rider Chilean, Pablo Quintanilla on a Honda. Matthias Walkner took third position but with mistakes has conceded 10 minutes to the leaders. Big name riders lost a lot of time today with errors dropping them down in the ranks. With only one prior Dakar event under his belt, young KTM rider Mason Klein stormed to fourth position on today’s stage, outriding and outnavigating many of the top riders. He sits in fifth position overall going into the next stage. Nasser Al-Attiyah stormed through the field of competitors, gaining precious minutes over his nearest competitor. The win gives Nasser 5 points in the FIA World RallyRaid Championship, but it’s a thin margin over Seb Loeb. Today, Sébastien Loeb stuck with AlAttiyah and Baumel, making good use of the Toyota team’s awesome navigational skills.

Bad news though for the Audi team with Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz no longer in contention. Major disappointment for the Audio e-tron drivers. Peterhansel’s Dakar came to a catastrophic end with a smashed rear end while Sainz lost over two hours with navigational problems and he plummeted to 32nd place overall. In the lightweight prototype category, Seth Quintero continued his strong 2020 form with ‘Chaleco’ Lopez hot on his heels.

Polish SSV driver Aron Domzała took the lead from Marek Goczał for a 15th stage win of his career, making him joint-second most prolific Polish Dakar stage winner. The trucks once again were dominated by Kamaz with Dmitry Sotnikov and Eduard Nikolaev swapping positions. However it wasn’t blue all the way, with Aleš Loprais in his Praga taking third position.

HA’IL - AL ARTAWIYAH The pictures don’t show it, but rain, rain and more rain at the Al Artawiyah bivouac meant the competition was re-routed, a new 270km link route was added and Dakar caravan would reach the Al Qaysumah bivouac, spending two nights there. Reputed to be one of the fastest riders on track, bike rider Joan Barreda made up for yesterday’s navigational errors by attacking today’s stage and taking victory. At the end of today’s racing however, Sam Sunderland and Adrien Van Beveren moved into the first two places in the overall classification with less than 3-minutes separating them. After solving his quad injector problems, Manuel Andújar triumphed today and is chasing hard to make up the 30-minute deficit on Lithuanian quad rider, Laysvidas Kancius. Le Dakar has a way pushing competitors, and vehicles to extreme limits and today was no exception. Last year’s classification winner Seth Quintero’s SSV suffered a major breakdown and in one of Dakar’s memorable performances rookie Guillaume de Mevius made up time on a disastrous previous day’s racing while still finding time to stop and assist a team-mate to change a wheel. Former MotoGP rider Danilo Petrucci’s first foray into Le Dakar was dashed after his KTM ground to a halt and he was airlifted from the stage.

Sébastien Loeb however mastered the stage and was rewarded with a career 15th stage win while also making it the first success for Prodrive and the BRX team. His BRX team-mate, Nani Roma finished the stage in fifth place.

mechanical issue lost him several hours the day before. ‘Chaleco’ Lopez and Sebastian Eriksson lead overall in the T3 classification.

The last time Audi was victorious at the Dakar was in 1985 – that was in a Quattro. Today, ‘El Matador’, Carlos Sainz claimed first position for Audi in the RS Q e-tron, the very first victory achieved by a car in the new T1-ultimate class for alternatively powered vehicles. This is history in the making for #Dakar Future. It was stage win number 40 for Sainz, showing that the e-tron has what it takes to compete at the highest level at Dakar.

Polish driver Marek Goczal, succeeded in the SSV category however it is American Austin Jones who leads the overall classification.

Hero Motorsport’s Joaquim Rodrigues fired up on the special stage to obtain his first Dakar victory. In a touching statement, ‘J-Rod’ paid tribute to former team-mate Paulo Gonçalves, who tragically died on the Dakar in 2020, saying “Paulo is riding with me here. I think he and I won here today.” The gap between leaders in the bike classification narrows as Adrien van Beveren came within 4 seconds of Sam Sunderland with Matthias Walkner and Skyler Howes closing in. Nasser Al-Attiyah increased his lead over Sebastien Loeb after the BRX Hunter’s prop shaft broke after the 10km point of the race. Kamaz continues it’s winning charge with Dmitry Sotnikov (Kamaz #500) in first place for the stage but Team De Rooy jumped onto the podium with a great drive by Janus van Kasteren in his Iveco. As a rookie in last year’s event, quad rider Laisvydas Kancius finished in seventh place and this year was hoping to go one place better and he has started strong with a victory on stage 1B. However, his race took a hit at the first check point in today’s stage with a mechanical fault that forced his withdrawal. All is not lost however, and Kancius may return, albeit with a penalty to continue his race.

Stage 4 is the longest special of this year’s event, at 465km with tough navigation, dunes, water and a technical finale. Al-Attiyah and Barreda in the cars and bikes respectively took line honours for the day. Barreda started in 24th place and at the end of today’s racing is in 7th place. Yazeed Al-Rajhi made the best time in the vehicles today, however was issued a penalty after being caught for speeding which pushed Al-Attiyah to the top of the podium. Nasser now has 44 Dakar stage victories, just 4 shy of Stéphane Peterhansel. The legendary Ari Vatanen holds the distinction of having won 50 Dakar stages.

Kamaz struck its 170th stage win at the hands of Eduard Nikolaev, but it is his teammate Dmitry Sotnikov who leads the classification overall. Mechanics managed to rescue the Sherco race bikes from a devastating factory fire last year and while it was a major setback, it hasn’t stopped the team being successful today with a podium finish by Rui Gonçalves finishing 3rd and teammate Lorenzo Santolino 4th. As the SSV competition heats up Polish driver Aron Domzala’s hopes are dashed, and he is out of the race.

ZERO EMISSION TRUCK

One year after announcing its presence in the Dakar Rally on an experimental basis with a 100% hydrogen-powered truck in the 2022 edition, GAUSSIN is further strengthening its links with the world’s greatest rally-raid. GUASSIN signed an official partnership

agreement with Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), organisers of the Dakar Rally and promoters of the World Rally Championship created by FIA, as part of the ‘Dakar Future’ program aimed at the gradual decarbonisation of a competition that aims to reinvent itself and make its contribution in the fight against climate change.

The ‘Dakar Future’ initiative establishes a gradual energy transition strategy with a conversion to clean mobility by 2030. From 2026 all elite competitors in the car and truck categories will run vehicles that meet the new ultra-low emission standard. “The Dakar is the world’s biggest rally-raid

and represents an incredible showcase for GAUSSIN’s know-how and technology. We share with the organisers of the competition and with the Saudi Arabian authorities the objective of decarbonized mobility and the desire to fight with determination against climate change. The signing of this partnership strengthens our involvement in the Dakar Rally and complements our participation with the H2 Racing Truck ”Christophe Gaussin, CEO GAUSSIN is also providing the Dakar 2022 Smart Bivouac, a temporary installation that will follow the race providing a hydrogen-powered power supply.

The Van Groningen’s – father and son William and Wesley with Remco Aangeenbrug in their Iveco while not threatening the leaders of the classification, tackled the stage to be placed 46th at the end of stage 5. The CR6 driven by Dakar 1st timer, Ernest Roberts and Navigator Henry Kohne are racing for the Century Racing Squad. Fifty-six year-old Roberts has competed in the South African Cross-country series against the likes of Baragwanath, Lategan and De Villiers. And Laia Sanz, ‘Queen of the Desert’ has this year switched from 2 wheels to 4 wheels, competing in the X-raid Mini All4 Racing vehicle. Sanz has been victorious in every one of her previous Dakar outings, competing since 2011 on a motorbike.

Husband and wife team Jordi Queralto and Petra Zemankova are 2nd time Dakar competitors after having to withdraw in stage 7 in 2020. This year, they’re back in the T1 category in their “Jeep Tanker”, hoping to make it into the top 20 at the end of the event. In their Can-Am Maverick XRS, Eric Abel and Christian Manez are hoping to beat their 10th position in 2021. The Team BBR/Pole Position 77 started stage 5 in 12th position and are aiming to finish with a single digit place. Abel has been quoted as saying “In Morocco, we saw that we were able to beat the times (of professionals) on certain stages, so why not? We will play our luck to the fullest!” Today’s 421km loop north of Riyadh tested competitors on 4-wheels while the bikes and quads competed on a separate 346-km loop to the east of Riyad. Tomorrow, competitors will swap loops.

Today in the cars, the Riyadh loop belonged to Terranova for the BRX Team and Ekstrom in the Audi RS Q e-tron. Orlando Terranova has competed at 15 prior Dakar events, starting on bikes in 2005 but this year joins teammates Sébastien Loeb and Nani Roma in a Prodrive Hunter. Mattias Ekstrom, competing in only his second Dakar, but no stranger to motorsports, posted the second-best time on today’s special, coming in just 1 minute and 6-seconds behind Terranova. Ekstrom makes it the second time on the podium for Audi’s alternative powered vehicles. The trucks battled the 348-km loop, but Kamaz proved too strong again for other competitors in the class. It’s Kamaz 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the halfway point of the race.

The bikes and quads had an especially tough stage, navigating through the tracks left from the previous day by the cars, trucks and SSV’s but made impassable in some portions by overnight weather conditions. Organisers halted the bikes and quads early after completing only a quarter of the stage. The stage win went to Australian Gas Gas rider Daniel Sanders over Adrien Van Beveren but it is Sam Sunderland who still sits on top of the bike category. A well-deserved rest day tomorrow for all competitors!

But Chilean “Chaleco” Lopez leads the classification for South Racing. Marek Goczal took stage honours in the SSV class, making it his 3rd success so far in this event.

T W I G A TRAVEL CARS A luxuriously appointed, fully self-sufficient truck with 3 beds, a spacious kitchen and a lavish shower is not what you’d expect of a vehicle tackling the terrain of the Dakar rally. But that’s exactly what you will find in the Twiga expedition vehicle The Twiga expedition vehicle is not a competitor but is a ‘hospitality’ vehicle which provides a place to sleep, rest and prepare meals, in this case, specifically for the competitors of the DDW team truck #537. The Twiga Travelcars vehicle is providing a welcome respite to team DDW’s crew after the long days of racing at the Dakar.

Willie Thijssen is one of the founders of Twiga Travelcars and a member of the DDW rally team, taking care of electrical technology and it has long been a wish of his to race in the Dakar. Through the years the truck, has been rebuilt several times, each time with new technologies. The ultimate goal for the DDW team was to finish in the Dakar rally of 2022. This year they finished in 17th place in the final ranking. The Twiga expedition truck has performed well and from all accounts, the crew of the DDW rally truck are very keen to have the hospitality truck back in future Dakar’s.

Besides the luxurious furnishings, the vehicle is also fully self-supporting, with 350 litres of fresh water storage and 1400 watt solar panels on the roof. This truck is not dependent on permanent power and water supplies. There is also sufficient storage capacity for personal necessities and of course, a fridge/freezer to take care of … nourishment!

R I YA D H The third Dakar held in Saudi Arabia has arrived in the capital, Riyadh, after six stages and seven days of racing. The bikers and quad riders reached the rest day with 1,627 km of specials and 2,170 km of liaisons under their belt, for a total of almost 4,000 km. Meanwhile, the FIA four-wheel vehicles have covered 1,933 km of timed sections - a bit more than the motorbikes, which only completed a quarter of yesterday’s special for safety reasons, for a total of 4,233 km since the start in Jeddah. The field has turned the psychological corner of the halfway point. Former champions have returned to their winning ways in the most prominent categories, including biker Sam Sunderland, racing for GasGas, and even more so with Nasser Al-Attiyah in his Toyota Hilux, who has put over 50 minutes between himself and third-placed Sébastien Loeb and his BRX. Yazeed Al-Rajhi has capitalised on these events to insert himself between the Qatari and the Frenchman in second place overall, 48 minutes behind the leader.

“Chaleco” López is dominating the lightweight prototype race after switching to T3s in a South Racing Can-Am, while Brazilian Rodrigo Luppi de Oliveira leads the SSV competition. Frenchman Alexandre Giroud may be starting to fancy his chances of winning the quad race, while reigning champion Dmitry Sotnikov and his Kamaz are in control of the truck category halfway through the rally. Audi is betting on its RS Q e-tron for the next few editions in its first year as an official constructor, with a view to ushering in a technological revolution. Although no longer in contention for the title, the three drivers racing for the brand with the four interlocking rings have appeared at the front of the race with a great deal of panache on several occasions, landing a stage win with Sainz and six top 3 finishes in the specials held so far.

The day after the Rest Day and GasGas biker, Daniel Sanders had an untimely spill just seven kilometers into a long liaison stage at the start of the day and now won’t be joining the rest of the competitors as they head westward from Riyadh to Ad-Dawadami. This part of Riyadh hosted the race for the very first time, first on the sandy terrain that made up a third of the special on the border with the neighbouring AlQassim Province, followed by a turn due south towards the bivouac.

Organisers warned that stages 7 and 8 would be huge. The competitors tackled over 400 km of timed racing today after a 299km liaison and face a similar distance tomorrow. It’ll be two long days for competitors, having to travel 700km each day as they edge closer and closer to the finish at Jeddah.

AL DAWADIMI WADI AD-DAWASIR The 44th edition of the Dakar has sand as a major theme and the eighth stage was one of its most perfect examples. The 830 kilometres to be covered during the day led the caravan due south between Al Dawadimi and Wadi Ad Dawasir. It was again in the heart of the kingdom and in the Province of Riyadh that a second consecutive special measuring almost four-hundred kilometres awaited the competitors. The menu consisted of 24% of the route in the dunes, which is the highest proportion since the beginning of the rally. Only the penultimate stage will have as large a percentage in store, which bodes well for those who like the suspense to continue until the day before the finish. Firstly, however, the day’s special commenced with the desertic Nafud as Surrah and its copious dunes, which some competitors had

8

to attempt several times before conquering their summits, sometimes at altitudes of more than 1000 metres. Significant skill was required for crossing the dunes and Audi driver Mattias Ekström remained cautious on his first experience of the Dakar, whilst “Mister Dakar” ripped off his bonnet after smashing down on one of the sandy monsters. This demanding first part against the clock then gave way to a complete change in scenery. From dunes to rocks and canyons in a labyrinth liable to throw up traps into which fell the openers, namely Cornejo – by no means a novice in navigation – and Barreda. All the symbolic elements of the Dakar were present: distance, dunes and navigation.

Designed to offer a bit of respite to the competitors after the long distances on stages 7 and 8, each comprising approximately 400 km of specials, stage 9 brought the bar down under 300 km for the section against the clock. The menu for the day was a loop around Wadi Ad-Dawasir towards the Province of Aseer and its tracks along the canyons running through the Wajid Plateau. The 287-km special climbed to altitudes of between 800 and 1,200 metres with more than half on sand and 14% on dunes for a taste of desert rallying. The contendors for victory at the end of stage 12 already knew that this type of distance will also be on the program tomorrow and the day after.

Some hoped to take advantage of this stage to regroup before the two battles on stages 10 and 11, followed by a possible final sprint on Friday the 14th of January. However, there were no major navigation errors in the bike or car classes and the caravan returned to the bivouac without any major changes.

WADI AD-DAWASIR - BISHA

The competitors left Wadi ad-Dawasir this morning to tackle a 759 km stage. Two thirds of this fast course were on sandy terrain, following a north-westerly direction leading to Bisha, where the caravan set up camp for two nights before the closing stage.

They headed due south, initially towards Najran Province for the start of a 375 km special that wove its way around the Wajid and Hejaz plateaus, whose peaks top out at 1,770 meters in landscapes found

100 DAKAR PRESS TEAM

nowhere else on Earth. In contrast, those in ‘Asir’ Province, closer to Bisha have rocky outcrops that jut out from the sand. Just 100 km south of Wadi ad-Dawasir is the archeological site of Qaryat al-Faw that dates back to the fourth century BC. While there is now a near total absence of vegetation, it was once a thriving city of houses, markets, roads, temples, and water wells.

After a total of almost 6500 km of racing, today’s stage was enough to break the backs of several machines, while Peterhansel pounced on the opportunity to grab his 49th special in a car.

BISHA BISHA

11

The penultimate stage of Dakar 2022 wasn’t the easiest of stages – a true rally terrain including camel grass, dunes, navigation challenges, riverbeds, stones, and plenty of soft sand to catch competitors out. As you can see in our photos, many competitors spent extra time in the sand today. Stage 11 of the event was based around Bisha, also known as Qal`at Bishah which is situated in the province of Aseer (Asir?) in southwestern Saudi Arabia. Despite the sand, the area around Bisha contains a lot of water and it is an important agricultural region, particularly for growing palm trees. There are around 3-million palm trees planted in the area and the fruits from these and multiple other varieties of trees growing here are sold widely.

In total the stage was 501 kilometres, looping out from Bisha heading north to enter the Province of Mecca then returning. At the end of the day’s racing, Carlos Sainz was enjoying his second stage victory, even after opening the difficult stage. And in the bikes, Pablo Quintanilla made the best of it and climbed into second place behind Sam Sunderland.

BISHA - JEDDAH AND FINISH PODIUM

Medals, hugs, winners, and grinners! At the finish of this year’s Dakar, the 44th event in the Dakar’s history there were 104 car crews, 109 bikers, 6 quad riders and 20- trucks left standing.

Drivers, riders and crews travelled 8,000 kilometers over the course of the 2022 Dakar event. After beginning their race in Jeddah on the 1st of January, they came full circle and finished the competition back at the Formula 1 Jeddah Corniche Circuit on the 15th of January. The Corniche is a 30-kilometre coastal resort area of Jeddah and the F1 circuit joins

Bahrain and Abu Dhabi in hosting Grand Prix events under lights. As for the 2022 Dakar podium, GasGas rider Sam Sunderland took out his second Dakar title, his first being in 2017. Nasser Al-Attiyah took top spot on the podium for the fourth time, adding this win to his three from South America. South Racing’s Francisco ‘Chaleco’ Lopez scooped the pool in the lightweight prototype category but was pushed all the way by 19 year-old Seth Quintero who claimed a phenomenal 12 special stages in his OT3-Red Bull.

Unfortunately, Quintero’s mechanical issues at the beginning of the event left him out of contention for a position on the podium. In the SSV competition, favorite Austin Jones lived up to expectations despite a last-minute scare. In contrast, it was a smooth ride for the Kamaz truckers, starting with Dmitry Sotnikov, who defended his crown after leading the general standings from beginning to end.

FROM PARIS-DAKAR TO THE DAKAR CLASSIC

For enthusiasts like Robbert Maas, this illustrious motorsport ‘Le Dakar’, holds a lot of special memories. Enthusiasts know the vehicles, the drivers and the stages. Rally organization ASO noticed that there is a lot of interest in the history of the Paris-Dakar and decided to bring the past back to life. In 2021, as special class was started within Le Dakar (as it is known today). To be eligible for the Dakar Classic, vehicles must have participated in the rally prior to the year 2000 and the vehicles have to be original for example, no LED lighting is allowed. The philosophy behind this is so that drivers can

132 DAKAR PRESS TEAM

rediscover the feeling of being rally-raid pioneers – not in Africa, but on the Saudi tracks. Dakar Press Team photographer Robbert Maas says ‘Images of VW Beetles, the Peugeot 504, Porsche 911 and Sunhill buggies will steal the show.’ ‘From 1986, as a photographer, I followed the rally closely. Jan de Rooy built his rally trucks just around the corner of my house. I was drawn into this and even built the trucks to scale. I was invited to accompany the team of De Rooy to the prologues in Paris at Place du Trocadéro and of course I photographed everything. The Dakar virus soon caught up with me.

Over the years I was involved in the rally as a press photographer. I joined the crew of the Dakar Press Team several times.’ After a break of ten years, Robbert heard that one of Jan de Rooy’s old trucks would be taking part, and he couldn’t stay away. ‘I knew I had to go. And yes, I wanted to photograph the classics. I contacted the Dakar Press Team again and they made it possible for me to photograph the classics every day of the rally. It is great to see the old cars again and to experience the atmosphere within this class. It was great!’ Robbert Maas

“You know what, we’re going on a trip,” said Juan Morera to his wife Lidia Ruba. “Where are we going?” she replied happily. “To the Dakar! Thus began the adventure of the married couple from Barcelona, Juan Morera Martínez and Lidia Ruba Cuartero from Aragon, which will take them to the Dakar Classic for the first time in the 2022 edition. Years ago, Juan surprised Lidia by giving her tickets to start a round-the-world trip. Now, the adventure will be to reach the end of the toughest race on the planet. Juan grew up among cars, in his father’s garage, and when he grew up he began to compete in endurance races on circuits. But he wanted to share his passion for racing with his family. He does

this from time to time with an excursion to the dunes of Morocco with his wife and three children. But he wanted to go one step further and race with his wife as co-driver. He began to do so in smaller races, until the Dakar came along. For his debut on the Dakar Classic Juan has chosen a Panda 4x4. He has a Toyota that is perfect for this race, but he wanted the Dakar to be a bigger challenge. He thought about doing it in a Fiat Panda 4x4. Most of the competitors told him that he wouldn’t make it with the Panda and that gave him the final push. The aim is to finish and enjoy the love of motor racing as a couple, but also to reach the finish for a charitable cause. Juan, owner of the Momabikes bicycle

company, collaborates with the NGO ‘Bicicletas sin Fronteras’ (Bicycles without Borders) by making sturdy and resistant bicycles so that the non-profit organization can deliver them to their aid projects in Senegal. With their participation in Dakar, Juan and Lidia want the ‘500 bikes for education’ project to be a success. In Senegal, hundreds of children walk more than 5 kilometers a day to go to school, so the bicycle is the tool with which the project wants to facilitate access to education for all of them. By carrying out the Dakar, through the money they get from their sponsors, they want to create 500 bikes to donate to ‘Bikes without Borders’.

THE STORY OF PASCAL FERYN & KOEN WAUTERS

With 12 participations in the Dakar each, Pascal Feryn and Koen Wauters have plenty of rally experience to support them and their Landcruiser in the Dakar Classic. The last time they shared the adventure in the same car together was ten years ago, so the 2022 version is a very different Dakar for them both. The two experienced drivers will share the wheel of the “100” and will be able to count on a strong support team that includes apart from the Landcruiser, an assistance truck and a rally truck, driven by Pascal’s son Cedric.

152 DAKAR PRESS TEAM

Koen Wauters is a TV show host, member of the jury of The Voice for the past seven seasons, and has recently completed a tour with his music band ‘Clouseau’ which has been on the music scene now for 37 years! Koen admits that he and Pascal are both of one mind, that if they don’t do the Dakar now, they won’t do it again. The Dakar Classic is, according to them, ideal as mature competitors. Their objective is not to drive like crazy but to focus, have fun and enjoy the ride.

Feryn and Wauters will swap the wheel every three or four stages with Wauters taking the start before a more nervous Feryn. Their approach to the ‘Classic’ is of course different to previous Dakar rally experiences and they will be relying on their intelligence and years of experience to get them through. The Landcruiser 100 has been well prepared and while it is less powerful than the 200 series, the duo believe it is enough to get them through the dunes, all the way back to Jeddah.

The H3 category of the Dakar Classic is reserved for the best performing historical vehicles with a high average constant speed. And at Stage 3, in the first three places are two crews of spouses and one father and son duo. Driving Protrucks, and in the lead is husband and wife team, Yannick and Valerie Panagiotis, followed by FJ teammates Jerome and Anne Galpin, then in third position is Philippe and Kevin Grandjean from the Ralliart Off Road Classic team, who are driving their Mitsubishi Pajero dating from 1988.

The Pajero has been repainted in original Nikon’s colours, reminiscent of the vehicle that was driven by Hubert Auriol 30 years ago. Auriol is a Dakar Legend, a three-time winner of the rally and passed away in 2021, aged 68 years. Coming on strongly in fourth position is the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Grand Raid from 1987, the year of the Sochaux based constructor’s debut on the Dakar. It is driven by Fanny Jacquot, who has just entered the top 10 of the H3 class behind the wheel of one of the stars in the Dakar Classic field entrusted to her at the last minute by her father.

The ditch in the track was unfortunately detected too late, resulting in a rollover. Happy that Miranda and Kornelis of the De Paauw Rally Team were quickly on the spot and provided immediate assistance. The damage to the Pajero appears to be less than expected and the stage can still be driven. Upon arrival, the timekeepers urgently request that the vehicle is technically inspected. It turned out that the roll cage was fully intact. The inspector couldn’t help but express his admiration for the excellent quality of the roll cage. The next day the race can start!

In his ‘baby’, a 1986 Range Rover, Lionel Guy hopes to make it not just to the finish of the Dakar Classic, but to reach a podium position. After having to pull out of the Dakar twice previously, once in a car in 2005 and then as truck navigator and mechanic in 2011, Guy and his navigator/partner Isabelle will need to be very consistent and measured if they are to succeed. In the regularity race, it is not about speed, it is about the people in the vehicle. The top 10 of the rankings in the ‘Classic’ includes two of the Mercedes G-320’s for Spanish team, RumboZero. In the 2021 edition of Dakar Classic, RumboZero entered two vehicles, and this year, the team has returned with three Mercedes vehicles competing in the class.

With almost a third of the race completed, the Mercedes truck of the Feryn Racing Team, driven by 20year Dakar veteran Tom de Leeuw and crewed by two Dakar rookies, Cedric Feryn and Bjorn Burgelman, is doing well. De Leeuw’s experience is steering the team well and mastering the sand, dunes, and rocks of the Saudi Arabian landscapes. Heading into the Saudi capital of Riyadh, all competitors and vehicles will need a thorough tune-up after a long day of racing.

Early in 2021, the restoration of the Ginaf F222 truck began. It has started its life as a fast assistance truck for Jan de Rooy in the 1988 Paris to Dakar. Known as ‘Brum’, the truck assisted de Rooy, then was used by Hans Bekx and in its next life, became a catering truck for Ginaf Rally Service. ‘Brum’ is legendary amongst Dakar truck enthusiasts and has been completely disassembled, overhauled, rebuilt and returned as far as possible to its original state and competed in the 2022 edition of the Dakar Classic. With original parts being difficult to find, the rebuild was quite a feat. Under the leadership of Gerard van Veenendaal, the Ginaf is now almost like new, and the crew has every confidence that it will perform well in fact, the team goal is to win the Dakar Classic trucks! Whether they win or not, driver Jack Brouwers, navigator Eugene Kluitman and mechanic Gerard van Veenendaal will experience an extraordinary adventure and build their friendship amongst the stunning landscapes of Saudi Arabia.

In 1979 – Le Dakar’s inaugural year, Hervé Cotel designed his eponymous buggy and the following year he entered and placed 13th. In his second Dakar attempt in 1981, Hervé was placed 2nd behind a Range Rover driven by Metge and Giroux.

This podium finish was in the Senegalese capital, not many current competitors can make the same claim, making Cotel one of the pioneers of the Dakar. Hervé Cotel participated in around 20 Dakars between 1980 and 2008 and the 75-year-old is back competing in the 2022 edition of the Dakar Classic in his Cotel buggy, vehicle number 707 which he rescued from a farm in the Aisne 6 years ago and has since rebuilt to racing condition after designing and building it 42 years ago.

Czech competitor Ondrej Klymciv entered his first Dakar in 2015 on a motorbike, finishing in 20th position. Two years later, again on a motorbike he competed and crossed the finish line in 12th position. Unfortunately, heavy falls put paid to his ambitions of joining a professional team, so in 2021 he re-entered the competition in the Classic category with a Škoda L130, a two-wheel drive vehicle that is not the most comfortable on the sands of Saudi Arabia! “It is a Czech vehicle. It is very dear to our hearts and it’s only two months older than me. When I was a child in the communist era, we didn’t have enough

money to buy a car like that. Instead, we had twostroke Trabants. This one belonged to my aunt, so I have many childhood memories in it”. Returning to the Dakar Classic in 2022, Ondrej has made some modifications to the vehicle to allow more ground clearance and is accompanied by good friend Tomas Bohm, who was a mechanic last year. “We are good friends. I think that is more important than being a professional navigator”.

LEGENDARY JACKY ICKX

In 1984 he convinced Porsche to build a 4x4 version of the Porsche 911, the Porsche 959, especially for the Paris-Dakar rally. Ickx started as favourite, but victory went to his team mate René Metge. In 1986 Ickx was again second behind René Metge. In 2000, he participated in this rally-raid together with his daughter Vanina Ickx as navigator. This year, while not racing, Ickx visited the rally together with his wife Janine Rema.

Marc Douton is a child of Dakar; he was born in the Senegalese capital in 1973 and witnessed the Dakar rally competitors finishing their races at Lac Rose (the pink lake finishing line in Senegal) in 1980-81-82. This has had an obvious effect on him. For his first Dakar Classic in 2021, the man who had no experience in regularity nor in rally-raid on four wheels outrageously dominated the new category with his teammate Emilien Etienne. Together they took out six stage victories, five second places and a third place. Performances that he certainly owes to his past as an enduro rider, but that he more humbly associates “to the thinking abilities of Etienne, my brilliant co-driver and colleague from Dassault”. “We had spent many hours studying the regulations, especially him, and in fact we had prepared ourselves exactly as we should have”. When Etienne was no longer available for racing commitments, Douton, impressed by Jérémy Athimon, a mechanic in civilian life. It was to him that Marc entrusted the restoration of the Cotel for 2021, he was also the mechanic in the evening at the bivouac. On his return home, Jérémy set to work to create an exceptional 911 for the 2022 Dakar Classic and navigated for Mark in this year’s event.

The Toyota is driven by Kilian Revuelta and co-driven by Mariano de Quadros. The truck is driven by Francisco del Pozo and codriven by Daniel Cesteros, with 3rd member Gustavo de Castro. Kilian Revuelta: “This Dakar Classic has been very tough; the level has gone up compared to 2021. In 2021 the Classic had 26 participants and this year there were 146 participants. The team had to work hard, as any misunderstanding could make you sink in the standings.

We managed to be 2nd overall in the third stage (leaving 1st) but after a navigational error in the fourth stage we fell to position 17. From that stage, it was a constant battle against the sand, the other competitors and ourselves, to climb day-by-day, until we managed to finish 5th in the general standings and 2nd in the H1 class. The Pegaso truck, not only had to fight in the race, but when the race ended it had to take care of the camp and the assistance of the Toyota, always demonstrating the Dakar spirit of yesteryear.”

While none of the team are new to motorsports, only three of the family members have competed in the Dakar previously. Julián and Alberto took part in the Dakar Classic in 2021 and Julio, the youngest of the team, has competed on two wheels. The idea for the family to compete together was hatched by Julian and

Alberto and it doesn’t seem the others needed too much convincing. This year, Alberto will have his sister Pilar on his right, as co-driver and who will be experiencing the Saudi landscape for the first time. Julian will drive with sister, Sonia in the navigation seat Miguel and Olga, the two oldest will team up together; and the youngest sibling, Julio will have Esther navigating. Their Merino team’s goal, of course, is to enjoy 15 days of adventures and misadventures together, adding to their personal album of memories to relive at family meals. Although they had already done something similar in the Intercontinental Rally years ago, this January they will be raising the bar. To do so, they hope to drive all four cars together on each stage, adapting their pace to lend each other a hand and make possible something that has never been seen before in the history of the Dakar: eight family members racing together. With only one more stage to be run, it seems the first three place-getters of the Dakar Classic are fairly certain. Mogno, Euvrard and Pliego sit at the top of the general rankings, however the Protruck driven by French couple, Jerome and Anne Galpin with its 400 horsepower Chevrolet engine is hammering at the door of 3rd place. The French couple took the stage win in the penultimate day’s racing which is their first for the event. It was also the first win for a vehicle in the H3 (high average speed) class on the Dakar Classic. “Seeing as we drive between 30 and 40 km/h quicker than the other categories, we have to take the decisions faster and, if we get delayed, it’s also more difficult to regain the time, because we have to go even faster! But that’s where it also becomes much more fun for a rally driver,” – Jerome Galpin.

We were behind the Panagiotis, the couple of friends with whom we came to the rally, but who dropped out on the rest day.’ After the rest day, the Galpins mission changed changed to bringing the H3 cup back. “We switched to rally mode, which is something we are used to, and got stuck into our notes. And we’d be the first to say that we are pleasantly surprised by the result”. The Galpin’s Protruck opened the road for the Dakar Classic Caravan on the final day or racing, looking for a podium finish for themselves and for absent friends.

were rescued. You can notice the happiness of both co-drivers, Olga and Oscar!

Serge Mogno and Florent Drulhon have been a surprise package on the 2022 Dakar Classic with several stage wins in their HDJ80 Landcruiser and at the final finish line are winners of this years’ Classic event. While Serge has made one Dakar attempt which was abandoned back in the 80’s, Florent is a totally newbie to the race. In fact, to gain practice for the co-pilot’s seat, he accompanied his wife on shopping outings with a GPS beacon and tablet on his lap learning and gaining GPS experience. Their win was ahead of experienced rally competitors, though also first time Dakar Classic entrants, Arnaud and Adeline Euvrard in the Mercedes ML.

Specialists Jesús Fuster Pliego and Juan Carlos Ramírez Moure, from Team Rumbo Zero in their Mercedies G-320 took out third place. Clear winners of the H3 category of the ‘Classic’ were Jérôme and Anne Galpin, in their Protruck coming in at fourth position. And a creditable performance by the Team Feryn truck crew, Belgians Tom De Leeuw, Cédric Feryn and Bjorn Burgelman who finished in eighth position and just 50 points ahead of defending champions Marc Douton and Jérémy Athimon in their Porsche.
