The word “father” encompasses many different meanings to a great deal of people. For some, the word “father” means a male biological parent; for others, fathers are founders of the family who are honored and respected. Whichever meaning you may choose, the word “father“ can be a combination of many meanings that are synonymous with the term leadership. My understanding of a father, doesn’t necessarily deal with genetics or biology; rather, fathers are friends or confidantes from whom you can seek guidance and direction – influential family members who help to manage relationships within a household. Growing up, I was lucky enough to experience such a person – my grandfather. To me, he was the ultimate dad – his calm and understanding demeanor always provided me with a certain ease. I would spend hours talking to him about everything from boys to life and I enjoyed every bit of it. He led through example, showing us the ropes on how to conduct ourselves in the world. Although ten years have passed, his lessons have remained in my heart and mind. Dads in the skating community hold certain leadership qualities as well. I have observed many fathers that have taken charge in various skate organizations, clubs and businesses. In talking with these men, families are their number one priority and skating is a close second. This month’s issue is a celebration of these great leaders – Fathers. Happy Fathers Day! Enjoy this month’s issue and enjoy your Bar-B-Que!

XTREMEROLLERS HEALTH

A LOOK INTO PROSTATE CANCER The American Cancer Society estimates that during 2008 about 186,320 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. The prostate is a gland below the man’s bladder that produces fluid for semen. Prostate cancer occurs when the cells of the prostate begin to grow uncontrollably. In the early stages, prostate cancer often causes no symptoms for many years and is usually detected by an abnormality on a blood test known as the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. Prostate cancer can also be detected during a digital The most common rectal exam (DRE). This procedure can be quite effective in treating prostate cancer, but cannot cure it. • Cryotherapy—a treatment used to destroy cells by freezing tissue.

Age is the most important risk factor for prostate cancer. The disease is extremely rare in men under 40, but the risk increases with age. According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 65 percent of cases are diagnosed in men over the age of 65. The average age at the time of diagnosis is 70. Race is another risk factor. In the United States, this disease is more common in AfricanAmerican men then in any other group of men, with Af-

rican-American men more likely to die from prostate cancer than any other racial or ethnic group. Diet may also play a role. There is some evidence that a diet high in animal fat may increase the risk of prostate cancer and a diet high in fruits and vegetables may decrease the risk. About 1 in every 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, but only 1 in every 35 will die of it. Prostate cancer accounts for about nine percent of cancer-related deaths in men, and the American Cancer Society estimates that 28,660 men in the United States will die of prostate cancer in 2008. There is no one way to treat prostate cancer. For most men, the decision will rest on a combination of clinical and psychological factors. Some men may require a combination of treatments – such as surgery followed by radiation; or radiation paired with hormone therapy. The treatment that is best for each man depends on several factors that include: how fast your cancer is growing; how much of it has spread; your age and life expectancy; and the benefits and potential side effects of the treatments. It is best to consult with all three prostate cancer specialists – urologist, radiation oncologist and medical oncologist – for the most comprehensive assessments of available treatments and expected outcomes.

THE MAN’S MENOPAUSE It is not just middle-aged women who suffer from menopause. Low testosterone (Low T) sometimes referred to as male menopause or hypogonadism, affects between 4 and 5 million American males. Low testosterone is a distinct clinical condition that is defined by abnormally low testosterone levels and is associated with many health conditions such as diabetes, depression, heart disease and erectile dysfunction. It can also cause increased irritability; fatigue; inability to concentrate; reduced muscle mass and strength; low sex drive; osteoporosis; and increased body fat. A simple blood test by a doctor can determine an individual’s testosterone level. Testosterone levels can vary from hour to hour, and the test is generally given in the morning, when levels are the highest. According to the Alliance for Aging Research, the normal range for testosterone in men is generally 300 to 1,000 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), depending on the lab performing the test and the method used. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is available in a variety of FDA-approved dosage forms including injections, gels and patches. TRT can restore sexual function, muscle strength and prevent bone loss. Oral forms of TRT are rarely prescribed because they can cause damage to the liver.

XTREMEROLLERS PEOPLE

XTREMEROLLER OF THE MONTH Each month, XR News selects an individual or group to be recognized as the “XtremeRoller of the Month.” Recipients are honored for one or more of the following: positivity, unique or diverse skating style, and/or passion for the art of skating as well as the community at-large. Kalorama Skating Rink in Washington, DC. “My dad worked at Kalorama and pretty much my whole family skated there,” he said. “When my mother started going, she took us with her and that’s how I learned how to skate.”

It is not just a coincidence that Lorenzo “Remm Dogg” Sanders plays an integral role in the Metropolitan rollerskating community. Skating flows through his veins just as it has flowed in his family – for generations and years. A native Washingtonian, Remm Dogg has been skating for nearly 40 years. Introduced to rollerskating by his parents, Sanders had his first lessons at

Known for his accomplished and versatile style of skating, Remm Dogg makes skating appear effortless. Typically found skating in the outside lane, Sanders enjoys fast-paced maneuvers and tricks, but is probably best known for skating backwards. “I like skating backwards,” he said. “It’s a challenge for me against the crowd to get better at skating backwards.” There does not seem to be enough time in the day let alone in the week to skate, however Remm Dogg religiously attends adult and family sessions at local area

rinks like Shake & Bake Family Fun Center in Baltimore, Md., D’Light Skate N Palace in Temple Hills, Md., and Seabrook Roller Skating Rink in Lanham, Md. No matter what session he attends, Remm Dogg is always willing to help other skaters with their skating techniques. Skaters, whether they are a beginner or veteran, are often eager to listen to his advice. “I am a passionate skater,” said Sanders. “[Skating] is a personal hobby. I’ve been skating for 38 years and I just love it.” Remm Dogg is as passionate for his skate club, the Midnight Rollers, as he is for the sport of rollerskating itself. In 2000, he joined the revamped Midnight Rollers as one of the original 11 members; this year, he is president of the skate club and two

A Look into Skate Clubs Exclusively for Men For centuries, exclusive societies for men have been created – boy scouts, NFL, NBA and some country clubs. Many have complained that these organizations can be thought of as discriminatory towards women. However, others feel that these groups are produced as a way to encourage bonding and provide brotherhood amongst friends. XR News interviewed a couple of skate organizations to uncover their perspectives regarding their preference not to have co-ed memberships. male team. In the beginning, it was [half and half]; [then], a few years later, it was almost all girls. When the girls went on to do other things in their lives, I just had all guys on the team and we kept it like that ever since. 2. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING AN ALL-MALE SKATE CLUB VERSUS A CO-ED SKATE CLUB? I love having both women and men on my team because, to me, there’s more of a variety of skaters to represent your club.

VILLES ON WHEELS (V.O.W.2) LOUISVILLE, KY FOUNDED IN 2003 12 MEMBERS CLUB PRESIDENT: RICHIE 1. DID YOU INTENTIONALLY CREATE AN ALL-MALE SKATE CLUB? IF SO, WHY? No, I didn’t intentionally create an all

3. WHAT, IF ANY, ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF HAVING AN ALL-MALE SKATE CLUB VERSUS A CO-ED SKATE CLUB? Well when we compete at WSA or UJSTA Nationals I would like to have men and women representing the team instead of just all men. To me, it looks like we have a stronger team and more competition. 4. DO YOU THINK THERE ARE ANY DISADVANTAGES IN INTEGRATING WOMEN? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY? Nope, [there are] no disadvantages. [I] think having women on the team helps make the team better and adds more

DREAMTEAM SKATERS ASSN BALTIMORE/WASHINGTON, DC FOUNDED IN 2005 25 BROTHERS CLUB PRESIDENT: SOUL 1. DID YOU INTENTIONALLY CREATE AN ALL-MALE SKATE CLUB? IF SO, WHY? The DreamTeam Skaters Association was founded by four black men: Antonio Moore, Kenny Garrison, Xavier Spencer and James Walker. The vision that those four brothers shared from inception was to create something more than just a skate club. It was about brotherhood. I would

fun and beauty to the team. 5. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT NOT ALLOWING WOMEN IN YOUR CLUB IS DISCRIMINATORY? No, not really because if that’s what they want, then that’s their rules for their club. Now, if you [had] an all-women club…and a guy wants to join their club, most likely [they] are not going to let him in. That’s only if they’re real serious about their club and obeyed their club rules. 6. DOES YOUR CLUB PLAN TO INTEGRATE WOMEN IN THE FUTURE? IF SO, WHEN? I would let a women join my club but, only if she is serious about joining V.O.W.2. Plus, she must be a good skater. 7. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHER ALLMALE SKATE GROUPS? Yeah, but this is to everybody: Just keep rollerskating alive and fun and don’t [ever] let any conflicts or worries come between you and that skate floor. I feel that’s one [of] our escapes and freedom to roll away from all problems outside the roller rink.

not say it was intentional to become an all-male skate club but, it was our vision to use this passion of skating as a tool for brotherhood. From the “Founding Four” came 21 more! 2. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING AN ALL-MALE SKATE CLUB VERSUS A CO-ED SKATE CLUB? There are no advantages in either scenario. The club is a reflection of its components. Each has to mesh and bend in order to function.

of his brothers – Tracy and Eddie – are both members. Sanders enjoys traveling and has already attended skate events outside of the area in Chicago, Atlanta, New Jersey, Delaware, Richmond, Va., North Carolina and Ohio. “I pretty much try to get around to every [area] where there is a skate party to [represent my] club so that if we throw a party, we’ll have visitors from out of town come here, too,” he said.

Very much the family man, Sanders boasts about his three devoted daughters and cherished granddaughter. “They take care of Poppa,” he said with a smile. It has been particularly exhilarating to pass on the torch of rollerskating to his youngest daughter, 8-year-old Lauren. “She’s been skating since she was a one year old,” he said. “[Lauren] is eight now. So, the trend has gone on from me to her.” Remm Dogg enjoys the quality time that they spend during family sessions while

he teaches her techniques and tricks. “Lauren just loves to skate and I take her every Tuesday and on the weekends as much as possible. She’s learning everybody’s style.” Remm Dogg wears many hats in the rollerskating community: loving father and brother; loyal leader, teacher and skater; and valued friend. It is his even-tempered and kind demeanor that allows him to perform each duty with ease.

3. WHAT, IF ANY, ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF HAVING AN ALL-MALE SKATE CLUB VERSUS A CO-ED SKATE CLUB? As far as disadvantages, I would say that there are none. I mean, people are people. We all are different and our way of thinking is as well. Ask any skate club, we all have issues. That’s the beauty of coming together and ironing out your differences. 4. DO YOU THINK THERE ARE ANY DISADVANTAGES IN INTEGRATING WOMEN? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY? We get asked that question all [of] the time. It’s not that we do not want women

in our organization. This organization was built and established on brotherhood. We are just continuing on our foundation. 5. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT NOT ALLOWING WOMEN IN YOUR CLUB IS DISCRIMINATORY? Some would view this as discriminatory, however, would they view it the same if it was vice versa? Because of the foundation and focus of this organization, we do not view this as such. 6. DOES YOUR CLUB PLAN TO INTEGRATE WOMEN IN THE FUTURE? IF SO, WHEN? We have honorary memberships for

women. Actually, we encourage those women who show interest in our organization to create their own all-female organization, which would become our “sister” organization. 7. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHER ALLMALE SKATE GROUPS? I’m not too sure on how many all-male skate clubs there are out there. However, we would like to speak to all skate clubs (male, female and/or co-ed) to keep the fun in focus! What brought you together shall keep you together! Never lose sight of the vision of the collective eye!
