HELLO SUNSHINE Xquisit has come a long way since our first issue was released just under two years ago. Just in the past few months, Xquisit has undergone a full rebranding and redesign, and we have released our brand-spanking-new website. We can’t wait to release even more content on this website and to share even more Xquisit with our readers. We also have a few surprises up our sleeves, including introducing some new members to the Xquisit team... but you will just have to wait to find out more about that! This Festival issue is packed with not only some stunning editorials, but also many fun festival-related features that are sure to rock your world. One of my favourite features is the one contributed by craft-goddess Lauren Quinn, a DIY appropriate for any festival-goer (page 62). I hope you all enjoy this issue as much as our editors and myself enjoyed putting it all together for you. We are so lucky to be able to feature, publish, and work with such talented artists. We look forward to continuing to support all things inspired and creative in Canada and worldwide as Xquisit continues to grow. Her inspiration for the shoot: “I was inspired by Lizzy’s fun loving attitude and personality. Everytime we hang out together, whether its professional or personal, she constantly makes me laugh and brings a fresh dynamic to any team. We are constantly giggling and enjoying ourselves on shoots and this one is no different. I wanted something fun, bright and innocent but still feminine and strong. Lucy’s styling helped bring this imagery together, with colour, metallics, flirty dresses and tight disco pants along with Yasmin’s use of quite modern but still vintage/retro makeup. Our choice of location helped bring everything together and give us the colourful and bright environment to play in. The greatest part about this shoot is the entire team are just good friends who enjoy hanging out and playing dress ups together. My style of photography always leans towards a vintage feel so it is just my natural comfort zone.”

“The story is a tribal-based concept and to an extent, [inspired by] the colour blue. In the Native American culture, blue symbolises wisdom, intuition, femininity and confidence, everything we could want in a fashion story. The shoot is an evolution from those initial ideas into something that showcases our own modern twist. The stylist pulled garments from London based designers, Queen of the Wild and Vinki Li. The makeup artist experimented with powders, pastes and air-spray to add her own artistic flair to the story while complimenting the garments and the models’ features. In the retouching, I wanted to create a blue-toned lush and mysterious landscape, as well as one full of rich colours and life.”

“For many, summer festivals are a getaway. They escape from their lives with a whole community of like minded people, to see their favourite bands. When they are there, they feel free. Free from the pressures of life, from their problems, from anything weighing them down. The festival, for them, is a release to a happier place.”
“My inspiration for this shoot is simple. I am a huge fan of nature and the element of air and sky. I also I have huge fascination with Rihanna’s song “Diamonds”. So I wanted to create a vintage summer story of a girl who is as fascinated with the elements of air and sky, as well as the element of diamonds/stars. And I’m also a big fan of the Beatles, and their iconic song, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” gave life to my title.”

SHIRT DIY Things are about to get a little warmer with this DIY inspired by the oodles of amazing Hawaiian shirts lurking in your local thrift store, or perhaps your father’s closet. With summer officially here what better way to put those Hawaiian shirts to use than with a half old, half brand new t-shirt! This summer, carry some tropical vibes on your sleeve and enjoy the satisfaction of saying, “I made this.” Happy festival-ing!

For this tropical DIY you will need a sewing machine, thread, pins, scissors, and (of course), both a T-Shirt and a Hawaiian shirt.
2.
Cut both sleeves off of the Hawaiian shirt at the armhole seams – yay, a Hawaiian muscle shirt (which, aside from the amazing t-shirt you’re about to make, might also turn out looking super cool).
3.
Cut both sleeves off the black t-shirt at the armhole seams.
4.
Stuff the Hawaiian sleeve into the armhole of the black shirt with the good side of the fabric facing the outside of the black t-shirt. The outside of the t-shirt and the outside of the sleeve should be facing each other.
5.
Now, line the edges up and pin the two together. Make sure to line up the side seam of the shirt to the seam of the sleeve. Sew both together at about 3/4 “. And, if you don’t know how to sew complete steps 1 through 5 then call your lovely [insert crafty relative here] and offer them a 10 minute back rub because that is about how long this will take.
6.
Cut any excess threads, flip inside out and voila! You’ve got yourself one seriously enviable tee, and you Did It Yourself! The combinations of prints and t-shirts are endless, and can make for some pretty awesome results. Instead of using a plain black t-shirt, try a graphic tee. Use long sleeves instead of short, or swap the order and apply solid sleeves to a printed blouse or shirt.
