In a sad turn of events a local Glenhills man passed away in a tragic accident at the R102 in the New Guelderland area involving a bakkie and a heavy duty truck.

The deceased, Nivendren Reddy (36) was in the Kia bakkie that collided with the truck on Friday at around 8:42am.

The truck driver escaped uninjured according to Chris Botha of Netcare 911.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the bakkie to have been ripped apart with its wreckage coming to rest at the side of the roadway.

“Firemen used the Jaws of Life to free the trapped driver from the twisted remains while paramedics treated another person.”

Botha said that the driver died before the arrival of the Netcare team whilst the other person had minor injuries and refused further treatment. Investigations

by SAPS are under way.

Reddy leaves behind his wife, mother and two children. His funeral took place on Sunday.

Murder trial goes to Durban

The murder case of Nu Mhlongo (30) who was allegedly shot dead at a Lindelani voting station on Wednesday, 7 May

2014 (Election Day) continued at the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

Party (IFP) supporters marched from Lindelani through to the CBD until reaching the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court in King Shaka Road.

Some of the ANC supporters wore ANC T-shirts with the picture of their late cadre emblazoned on the front with a memorial message at the back.

The ANC members and supporters said their final goodbyes at Mhlongo's funeral service in the Lindelani Sports Ground on Saturday morning.

At court, the IFP supporters outnumbered the ANC contingent considerably with the IFP faithful seen with pangas, batons, whips, vuvuzelas and a megaphone.

Tensions were reaching a dangerous crescendo as both sides at times were crossing the police tape and taunting one another. The crowds were seen twerking (dances to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low squatting stance - Wikipedia) and engaged in pelvic thrusting.

The suspect Dumisani Nxumalo (28) appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court on Monday and was denied bail.

He will appear next week in the Durban Regional Court.

Back by public demand English educator and single mum of 4, Mello Gilbert hosted the entertaining and highly successful one woman comedy show, “Mellodramatic” on 10 May 2014.

The show will be repeated on 20 June 2014 at the Stanger Siva Sungum Hall.

“I want the evening of the show on 20 June to be a real fun, social gathering,” said Mello. The show starts at 8pm but patrons can arrive from 6pm onwards as there will be some delicious light meals sold by various talented cooks. For the first time in KwaDukuza, there will be a fun photo booth allowing patrons to dress up and have fun pictures taken. There will also be an after party (included in ticket price). The show is rated PG13.

According to Mello, the show deals with every day funny experiences as she imitates colourful characters that she has

met.

She would like to share her experiences with the use of satire to bring some serious social issues to light.

She added that laughter has always been her means of survival.

“I'm always making friends and family laugh, so it was suggested by them that I do my very own show, especially since Stanger is starved of entertainment,” said Mello, who is assisted with sound for the production by the talented Creagen Naidoo.

According to Mello, she has participated in every school production possible! She played the lead role in Hasina Kathradas very popular Another Look at yourself, co-directed the production of Thuurkaari and participated as Madam Halwa for Stanger Manor Secondary.

She has also directed many other

productions including Ronnie Govender's At the Edge and Athol Fugard's People are Living There for Manor Secondary and Darnall Secondary.

Mello also played the "Green Goddess" in the Shoestring Companys production of Mango Leaf Magic directed by Themi Venturas of the Catalina Theatre.

She has recorded two documentary voice-overs for TV (one of which was requested by Nelson Mandela) at UKZNs Audio Visual Centre.

“I am looking forward to the support of the locals who have missed the first performance.

Thank you to all my dear friends for their support,” said Mello.

She alleges that she was returning home via the shortcut between Doctorskop and Riverside. She met a 41-year-old man who told her that he had a job for her and she should accompany him to give her details. He suddenly attacked her and threatened her with a knife before raping her. He thereafter began punching her in the face and jabbing her neck with his knife. He took her cellphone and she lay still pretending to be dead. Once he had left, she ran and a caring paramedic residing in the area comforted her and gave her a set of his wife's clothing. Police were contacted and whilst police were busy near the scene of the incident, the alleged culprit emerged and was arrested. He had his victim's cellphone in his possession and identified him immediately. The man has been remanded in custody.

K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association will host the Sunil Pranpath (SPI) corporate volleyball knockout tournament that is scheduled to commence tonight (Wednesday) at the association courts at 7:00pm with the draws taking place at 6:30pm.

The semi finals will be played on Wednesday, 28 May 2014 with the finals scheduled for Friday, 30 May 2014.

Isaac Abraham, President of KDVA expressed his sincere thanks to Sunil Pranpath, CEO of SPI Incorporated for his ongoing support of volleyball amongst the older generation. He added that with Pranpath's continued support, the older players have the means to lead a healthy life style.

The tournament is open to all men that are 35 years and older and females that that are 21 years and older. A carnival atmosphere is expected after the final next Friday as all participants in the tournament will receive braai packs. It is envisaged that the female tournament will run concurrently with the men's final.

Tiger Ponnsamy and Alveiro Nadasen were crowned iLembe and District Cricket Union double wicket champions after emerging victorious in the final played before a huge crowd at the Country Club Ground on Sunday.

Almost 28 teams converged at the Country Club Ground on Saturday to stake a claim for honours in the 2014 showpiece. The annual double wicket tournament has been the highlight of the cricket season since its inception 30 years ago.

The inaugural senior Prem Maharaj congratulates 2014 senior double wicket champions Alveiro double wicket tournament Nadasen and Tiger Ponnsamy. held way back in the 80's was won by Prem Maharaj and the late Mahalingam Govender and it was a glorious moment to have Maharaj present at the ground on Sunday to witness the 30th anniversary of this prestigious tournament. Officials of KZN Cricket Union including vice president's Sajeel Maharaj Desigan Pillay and Ben Dladla and national cricket selector, Linda presents the Zondi graced Sunday's double wicket final in trophies to U15 winners KwaDukuza.
