iLembe hosts revenue enhancement campaign The iLembe District Municipality and the Mandeni Local Municipality held a three-day revenue enhancement campaign on 12, 13 and 15 July 2018 targeting four wards in Sundumbili Township in Mandeni with the aim of improving rates collection, instilling a culture of paying for services amongst citizens, updating the indigent register and addressing the challenge of low revenue generation and financial viability of both councils.

This initiative is part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance ongoing Revenue Enhancement Campaign themed “Pay Your Levies Nothing for Mahhala”. The campaign seeks to encourage communities to pay their dues for municipal services which are a crucial part of municipal revenue.

The revenue enhancement campaign kicked off on the 12th of July with a workshop held at Sibusisiwe Hall for councillors, ward committees, community development workers, Amakhosi and Izinduna as well as government officials who were workshopped on revenue related policies of both municipalities.

On Friday the 13th, four delegations led by mayors, deputy mayors and speakers and supported by councillors, ward committee members, community development workers and government officials embarked on a door to door campaign in Wards 7, 13, 14 and 15 in Sundumbili Township to establish challenges that customers experience in water and electricity provision and to encourage them to pay for municipal services.

Sunday morning, the 15th of July saw the delegations visiting the KwaMsindisi Church, the Lutheran Church, the Assemblies of God Church and the Methodist Church in Sundumbili to encourage congregants to pay for municipal services.

The church visits were then followed by a community event in Sibusisiwe Hall on Sunday afternoon to encourage residents and ratepayers to pay for municipal services. At the event Mandeni Mayor Cllr Siphesihle Zulu said even though the municipalities receive grants from national and provincial government, a huge percent of money required to run the municipalities is the money

from residents and ratepayers.

Addressing the community, iLembe District Mayor Cllr Siduduzo Gumede revealed that the Mandeni community including business, households, government departments and local municipalities owed the district more than R28 million.

“A big debt comes from our domestic users and it amounts to R22 995 931.5. Ward 7 is owing R892 284.54. You will see the amounts will keep on increasing...ward 13 is owing R2 474 488.40, ward 14 is owing R6 202 745.43 and ward 15 and this is the biggest debt in all the four w a r d s w e h a v e targeted…ward 15 is owing R13 425 479.14,” said the Mayor.

The District Mayor said the issue of non-payment is a big problem in this district because consumers have formed a culture of nonpayment. The iLembe Family of Municipalities is rolling out various revenue enhancement programmes in the district. The next stop for this important campaign will be in KwaDukuza which will be specifically targeting residents.

“It will be rude or rather undemocratic for the employees of the municipality to abuse their role as people who work for the community after the struggle our fellow leaders fought,” he said. Mthembu mentioned political activist, Albertina Sisulu and said that world icons should not be forgotten for the roles that they have played in building South Africa.

The Mayor urged the community to work together with the government to build a united nation that our forefathers could be proud of.

We need to continue doing good work even though sometimes we get nasty comments from people who are hardly satisfied. Let's keep KwaDukuza clean,” said Govender.

The campaign kicked off last week as municipality workers, ward councilors and officials clean up the streets of KwaDukuza.

The year 2018 marks a major milestone in the incredible story of Nelson Mandela his centenary. Today marks Mandela Day, an annual international day adopted by the United Nations. It is more than a celebration of Nelson Mandela's life and legacy, it is a global movement to take his life's work into a new era and change our world for the better.

Mandela Day asks us all to “Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day.” This year we celebrate 100 years since Nelson Mandela's

birth.

The first Mandela Day was launched in New York on July 18, 2009, but the UN's resolution to declare the day occurred later that year. On November 10, 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring July 18 as “Nelson Mandela International Day”.

Citizens throughout KwaDukuza will pay homage to Nelson Mandela by dedicating 67 minutes of their time to community work.

People from all walks of life commemorate Mandela Day by cleaning up the community,

feeding the hungry and bringing smiles to children.

The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good.

Ultimately it seeks to empower communities everywhere.

Nelson Mandela Day not only celebrates Nelson Mandela's life, but it is also a global call to action for people to recognize their ability to have a positive effect on others around them.

KwaDukuza's very own Nokwanda Shezi has been selected amongst 19 players to represent South Africa in the Tag Rugby world cup to be held in Australia in November 2018.

Nokwanda hails from Thembeni, KwaDukuza and is currently studying in the Western Cape.

She is in need of funds to make her dream a reality. Since tag rugby is a new sport, it lacks sponsorships. Nokwanda is required to come up with R40 000 for all her travel expenses and she is appealing to the community of KwaDukuza to assist her.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR AND THE COMMUNITY OF KWADUKUZA MUNICIPALITY ON THE 51ST COMMEMORATION OF THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF CHIEF ALBERT LUTHULI Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli who was also as known by his Zulu name Mvumbi, had many titles to his name. He was a proud South African teacher, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Activist and politician. Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli was born in Solusi Mission Station near Bulawayo, in southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, in 1898.

His father, John Bunyan Luthuli, was the younger son of a tribal chief at Groutville in the Umvoti Mission Reserve in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu Natal. He became a Christian missionary at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and at the time of Albert's birth, was working as an interpreter among the Matabele of Rhodesia.

In his many titles, Chief Albert Luthuli was a preacher of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) based in Groutville Congregational Church in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu Natal. On the grounds of his Church is where Luthuli was laid to rest upon his passing in 1967.

Chief Albert Luthuli's political journey helped improve a lot of lives as he fought in the struggle and prioritised the needs of his people.

In 1944 Luthuli joined the African National Congress (ANC). In 1945 he was elected to the Committee of the KwaZulu Provincial Division of ANC. In 1952 he was elected president of the African National Congress (ANC), at the time an umbrella organisation that led opposition to the white minority government in South Africa, and served until his accidental death.

Chief Albert Luthuli was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the non-violent struggle against apartheid in the year 1960. He was the first African, and the first person from outside Europe and America, to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The year 2018 marks the 51st anniversary of Chief Albert Luthuli's mysterious death. Let us remember the man who believed that his career was based on the idea of a non-violence struggle. Let us remember and honour this lodestar of our people, a beacon of hope during the dark days of apartheid, by participating in the Luthuli Legacy Walk and Fun Run. The event will be on Saturday, 21 July 2018. Let us register and come in our multitude.

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE The World Cup has come and gone. Until next month, when the soccer season begins, w i t h d r a w a l symptoms will set in and many will be twiddling their thumbs. To sum up, the 2018 tournament was full of excitement, controversies, mainly attacking and open football, some brilliant goalkeeping and spectacular goals. Young players from various countries made their mark and this will add to their value in the seasons ahead. Old timers like Messi and Ronaldo, who has now moved to Juventus, will have to re-build their international careers perhaps never to play in another World Cup. Neymar and Suarez will be hoping that they get back onto the world stage and stay on their feet rather than rolling on the grass. New managers/coaches will be appointed to oversee the fortunes of their respective countries as they build teams for the upcoming continental competitions. So its farewell to Moscow and looking forward to Qatar in 2022 and hoping that teams from Africa will perform better than at this edition. And South Africa must be there!

This year we commemorate Madiba's Life under the theme: “Be the Legacy”, and have therefore planned a number of programmes as the municipality to commemorate our late global icon which began on Thursday, 12 July 2018 and shall end on Friday, 20 July 2018.

Mandela's political life meant different things to different people. His critics on the far right denounced him as a communist terrorist and those on the radical left deemed him too eager to negotiate and reconcile with apartheid's supporters, he gained international acclaim for his activism.

We are constantly reminded of Madiba's words, “The world remains beset by so much suffering, poverty and deprivation. It is in your hands to make a difference”.

We hold him highly and with respect as the "Father of the Nation". On the occasion of the centenary of Tata Madiba, a call is made for all of us to exhibit the Mandela inside us by tending to the needs of the poor, frail and vulnerable.

Long live the spirit of Tata Madiba!
