By Xpress Reporter The Top Five matriculants in the iLembe District have made their schools and families proud as they have achieved outstanding results and bagged numerous distinctions.

The future looks bright for iLembe District's top matriculant, Nosipho Samukelisiwe Mthembu, who passed with flying colours.

She achieved 7 distinctions in English, Isizulu, Maths, Physical Science, I.T, Life Sciences and Life Orientation. The Stanger Secondary School learner says that she did not expect to be number 1 in Ilembe District.

“I studied a lot, even during holidays and my mother gave me all the support I needed”.

Nosipho urged learners to stay in school and put more effort into their studies. She has received a bursary from the Enela Bursary Fund and will be studying medicine at the University of Cape Town.

Emmanuel Mwandla of Groutville High School was placed 2nd in iLembe and 3rd in the province with 7 distinctions in isiZulu,

English, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Maths, Physical Sciences and Geography. “I did expect to get good results but I did not expect to be amongst the provincial top achievers,” said the outstanding student who has received a Sasol bursary and will study Chemical Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch. He placed emphasis on the importance of hard work and persistence. “It takes a lot of hard work. I worked at school and at home. I also attended weekend classes and classes during the holidays. I would advise learners to start working hard from day one. Ask as many questions as you can.

Be passionate about your studies, research stuff that's not part of the curriculum. I would like to thank all my teachers, my school principal, my mother, and track facilitator,” said Emmanuel. iLembe's third placed learner is Nkanyiso Sandile Mhlongo of Impoqabulungu Secondary School. He obtained an impressive 7 distinctions which were for English, isiZulu, Life Orientation, Maths, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Geography. Nkanyiso said that he was motivated by a number of factors. “For one it was my educators who always put pressure on me. My PROTEC branch manager Mr Naidoo who throughout the year had me on my toes as to what is at stake and my peers who truly believed in me and continuously reminded me of the beast I am. Prathna Seewnath of Glenhills Secondary School is iLembe's fourth placed learner and scored distinctions in Afrikaans, Mathematics, Life Orientation, Information Technology, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. Prathna said that she made sacrifices and remained determined throughout the year. She urged current matric learners to be motivated and believe in themselves. “Never think that you cannot achieve your goals. I want to thank God, my parents and my educators who have helped me throughout my schooling career,” she said. Prathna received a bursary from Sasol and will be studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town.

Ashveer Singh of Stanger Manor Secondary rounded off iLembe's Top 5 with 6 distinctions coming from Maths, Afrikaans, Physical Science, Life Science, Accounting and Life Orientation. He was also the top Mathematics achiever in iLembe. Ashveer said that hard work, prayer, consistency and plenty of sleep was the key to his success. He will study Medicine at Wits University. “It's a noble thing to do. There's a demand for doctors and healthcare is needed,” said Ashveer.

Tribute to the late Cllr Deo Singh Well known Cllr Deo Singh of Nonoti was called to rest on 21 December 2017. He had been unwell for more than a year. His untimely death at the age of 61 took the family and the community by surprise. At the time of his death, he was a serving councillor at the KwaDukuza Municipality for six years. Cllr Deo Singh has a long history of community service and development spanning REMEMBERED: The more than twenty years. late Cllr Deo Singh Singh served as a PR councillor of the Democratic Alliance and was reelected in 2016 to serve his second term.

Singh served on various community structures including serving as a member of the school governing body and founder of Kairos Church in Nonoti where he served as a pastor until his death.

At KDM he served as a member of the Municipal Services Portfolio Committee and was a respected member of council. Singh was always a grassroots person assisting people on a daily basis making a difference in his community and also assisting financially towards hamper distribution to the poor and needy.

We would like to thank all those who paid tribute to our late councillor Deo Singh from the Municipality, the Democratic Alliance and the community at large.
