Hundreds down tools in strike

The workers of the Avon Peaking Power Plant near Shakaskraal downed tools on Monday, 25 May 2015. The Avon project which is a 670 Mega Watt diesel fired open cycle power plant has thousands of workers in its employ. The large scale independent power producer (IPP) was under heavy law enforcement guard on Thursday when the Xpress Times arrived to find hundreds of striking workers within the company perimeter.

A representative of the workers alleged that their rights were being violated and

KDM invests in childhood development facilities The KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) has come to the party with boosting infrastructure in rural communities.

Community welfare and human capital investments came in the form of the Shayamoya crèche and the Ntshawini crèche respectively unveiled on Monday, 27 May 2015.

KwaDukuza Mayor: Councillor NR Mthembu said the facilities will help correct the imbalances of the past and narrow the achievement gaps in the future.

“This government in 2014, committed to work and make two years of pre-school education compulsory, we are indeed providing the means to help improve academic achievements, reduce crime, poverty and enhance future labour market success. Our efforts will culminate to a high return on human capital investment”.

To commemorate child protection week, Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza will be conducting awareness programmes on child abuse,

Solving it Mr A Venketsamy's trip to a popular franchise outlet in King Shaka Street turned ugly for him. He alleges that as he was entering his vehicle he was held up by two youth who fled with

his wallet and cash, cellphone, driver's license and bank cards.

Another person who knows the culprits provided Venketsamy with details of his attackers. Three days later, Venketsamy spotted one of his attackers and apprehended him. Bongani Nxumalo (24) of Groutville has been remanded in custody pending a bail investigation.

Mysterious arrest An Angolan herdsman is in a serious condition at Stanger Hospital. Equally dangerous Ms N Mbatha has been scarred for life. She alleges that she was returning home when she noticed her brother engaged in a fight with a

female. She went to separate the two.

As she was pushing her brother home, the female approached them armed with a bottle. The attacker allegedly broke the bottle on the ground and sliced her on her left breast up to the nipple, causing a 4cm deep laceration which was about 20cm in length. Slindile Cele (26) is due back in court on 15 July.

Illegal structures mushrooming

As a business owner I am upset about the boom of illegal corrugated Iron structures opposite the Taxi rank in KwaDukuza that are built into the pavement. These structures are also permanent with concrete floors. I would like to know if this area is open to the public for trading?

I have been passing this area on my way to my business for the past eight years and I am alarmed at the growth of these structures. There are 20 or so of these of which I noticed four come up over night. There is even a 20 foot container that is there trading as a TakeAway.

I would like to know which Department is involved in checking permits for these

structures in town where vendors sell from.

I am a rate paying businessman plus I have to keep up with payment of other licences that include trading licences. I found out that these businesses make in excess of R 10 000 a week. Firstly I want to thank iLembe for informing residents about the water restrictions and also offer some tips on how to save water. But it is sad as I don't see iLembe sending their water tankers in both areas. In October 2014 and January 2015 I have written to our local papers about the cleaning of the river whereby a small section of the river was cleaned because of the dense forest on the water by Marie Nadsen who contracted to the Darnall Sugar Mill just for one month. The work stopped because Tongaat Huletts did not have enough money to continue!

Floods and droughts are acts of

God. We must be prepared and work forward towards a better life for all by working together and finding solutions. I have a solution: start clearing the forest on water and dredging of the river. I hope this helps both Darnall Sugar Mill and iLembe. God bless South Africa.

SMA hosts mammoth Rice Distribution The Stanger Muslim Association (SMA) Rice Distribution proved to be a huge success on Saturday, outside the old Sasko Bakery site in Smithers Road. A total of 1300 beneficiaries benefitted; from various wards, chosen by KwaDukuza Municipality councillors with whom the SMA had partnered to assist with the rice distribution.

Prior to the gates opening, SMA Exco official, Ebrahim Manjra stated: “The SMA always plans months ahead for such events. We have alphabetical listings of all beneficiaries in each ward and expect a smooth and efficient operation today.”

Inside the gates, there was a hive of activity as SMA officials and volunteers

prepared the final touches for the mammoth rice distribution. A large SMA banner welcomed all beneficiaries to the humanitarian event. SMA volunteer and co-ordinator, Laa-iqa Raheem said: “My team of volunteers and I feel honoured and privileged to be able to assist all these wonderful people.”

Beneficiaries were verified by their identity documents before collecting a 5kg bag of rice, soup, bananas and SMA bottled water. There was much excitement with some beneficiaries showing immense gratitude and thanking the SMA for their kindness and generosity.

We thank you all for your magnanimous contribution in making the event a resounding success.”

The project will now move into its next phase which is to provide rice to various other organisations such as Food for Life, Feed the Hungry and the Dolphin Coast Hospice.

A side impact accident along Ballito Drive left six people injured on Thursday, 28 May 2015.

According to Chris Botha of Netcare, a car collided into the side of a taxi, both vehicles overturned on impact.

“Netcare 911 paramedics and the KwaDukuza Fire

Department arrived at the scene and found some of the injured still trapped in the vehicles.

“While the firemen used the Jaws of Life to free the injured, medics clambered into the wreckage to stabilise an injured female,” said Botha.

He added that after triaging

it was found that a female driver from the car had sustained serious injuries while five commuters from the taxi escaped with minor injuries.

“After medics stabilised the wounded at the scene they transported them to various hospitals for the care that they required,” he said.

CRASH: A collision in Tinley Manor left three people injured

Three people were injured after a vehicle collided into the barriers of the bridge going over the railway lines on the Tinley Manor link Road on Saturday morning.

According to Chris Botha

of Netcare, paramedics arrived at the scene and after triaging the injured, they found that one man had sustained serious injuries while two others escaped with minor injuries.

“After paramedics treated

the injured at the scene, they transported them to a local hospital for the care that they required,” said Botha.

He added that exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events are under investigation.

Rookie Yogan Pillay, against all odds beat more experienced players to lift the KwaDukuza Darts Association to lift the singles darts knockout championship sponsored by Darrel Shanmagum and family at the North Coast Tavern last Wednesday beating the veteran Paddy Padayachee in the finals.

Pillay, playing in the bottom half of the draw drew first blood against the seasoned Sanjay Singh in the quarter final clash.

Although the score line suggests that it was a one-sided 2-0 win, Pillay had to dig deep in his reserves to outclass rampant Singh 20 to book a place in the semi-final against Vasa Rungasamy. Rungasamy himself, playing in the final quarter final had a fought victory coming from a game down to beat seasoned campaigner Terrence Subban 2-1 to move into the semi-final clash.

In the top half of the draw, Padayachee, playing in the second quarter final game threw consistent darts, albeit in a tight game. He drew on all his experience to go past the prolific Jerry Arunachellam 2-1 to set up a semi-final clash against Vishalin Parmasivan who had beaten Vinesh Geanballey in straight games in the first quarter finals of the night.

In the first semi-final Padayachee showed scant respect for the scintillating Parmasivan romping home into the final

with a fluent 2-0 victory. Pillay was also playing at a different level throwing pinpoint darts to annihilate Rungasamy 2-0 to set up the mouth-watering final again Padayachee.

The final was a real humdinger that thrilled the crowds to bits. Pillay got into the act first out classing Padayachee and sailing for a first game victory.

Padayachee's experience came to the fore front in the second game as he matched the determined Pillay with scores and reached and closed the game before Pillay to level the scores at 1-1 and push the game into the third and decisive game. The final game was closely contested but it was Pillay who held on to win and be crowned singles champion.

Dart players and enthusiast need to take note that as of the 3rd of June 2015 (tonight) darts will be played at the Quartz Sports Bar at Manor Drive in Stanger Manor. The doubles league will continue and new players and clubs are welcome to attend. There will be development darts every Fridays. The aim is to develop new talent and build the sport.

ukuPhakamisa hosts successful soccer tournament

Winners of the ukuPhakamisa soccer tournament

It was an exciting weekend for the community of New Guelderland: DCLM, in collaboration with their NPO ukuPhakamisa, hosted a soccer tournament for the surrounding community.

On Saturday the 30 May 2015, the community of New Guelderland gathered together for an exciting Soccer Tournament coordinated by DCLM and ukuPhakamisa. The Match was held between four of the surrounding community teams, Princes Grant, Nonoti, Stewards and New Guelderland.

Ukuphakamisa is a Non-Profit

Organisation, fully sponsored by Dolphin Coast Landfill Management (DCLM). Its main objective is to uplift and educate the local Community, and they demonstrated this by upgrading the New Guelderland field into a proper soccer field, presenting it to the Community for their recreational use.

The trophy, soccer kits and soccer boots which were fully sponsored by DCLM, were awarded to the winning team The New Guelderland Hungry Lions.

The Tournament was supported

by South African Foot Ball Association (SAFA), who was

involved from the planning stages.

Mr Mhlongo, President of SAFA within the iLembe region, commenting on the efforts put forward by DCLM and Ukuphakamisa towards encouraging the New Guelderland Community to participate in sporting activities; said “..Soccer is one activity that assists in keeping the youth away from drugs”. This tournament was also supported by the Councillor James Van Whye who also commended DCLM for their support and work towards improving the quality of life for the local Community.

Darnall United suffered their third straight defeat when they were stunned by Cool Leaders going down 1-2 in a KwaDukuza Volleyball Association Division I league game played at the association courts last Thursday.

Darnall were favourites going into this game and it was no surprise when they raced to a 25-17

victory in the first set. Sanaa Banda, Nishendra 'Nik Naks' Dhaver and Ismail Essop capitalised on the perfect setting of Desmond Chetty as they hammered the ball to all parts of Cool Leaders court. At the change of sides, Cool Leaders got their act together. Trailing 7-10, they clawed their way back to contention through Alvin Ramalingum and Jayson Govender. The game was tied at 15-15 before Cool Leaders forged ahead 20-15.

Numerous unforced errors from Darnall saw Cool Leaders lead 24-17 with just a point needed to secure the set. Darnall came back into contention as it was Cool Leaders turn with unforced errors until a thunderous shot from veteran Ramalingum put the final nail in the coffin of Darnall to give Cool Leaders a 25-20 victory and forcing the game into the third and final set.

The start of the decisive set saw Darnall determined to make amends for their second set defeat.

Led by Banda, Darnall raced for a 5-0 lead forcing Cool Leaders into an early time out. The severe talk given by Manager-cum-player, Cooks Moodley seemed to the trick. Vince Pillay, together with the combination of Ramalingum gave Cool Leaders a glimmer of hope as Cool Leaders cornered Darnall at 6-6 before Cool Leaders changed sides with the score on 8-7 in their favour. The game was closely contested with Govender and Reddy providing the firepower for Cool Leaders whilst Dhaver and Essop doing the same for Darnall. At a crucial stage of the game, Essop made the cardinal mistake of serving out. Cool Leaders capitalise on this error and race to a 15-11 victory.

KDVA to host Ralph Reuben Memorial KO KwaDukuza Volleyball association will host the annual Ralph Reuben Memorial knockout volleyball tournament that will get underway at the association courts tomorrow (Thursday), 4 June 2015 commencing at 7pm. The tournament is hosted by the Reuben family in memory of Ralph Reuben who passed away tragically in a car accident a few years ago.

Ralph was an enthusiastic volleyball player and a true sportsman who inspired others to greater heights. He comes from a sporting family and many of you would remember the legendary 'Kicha' Reuben who played for Darnall as a goal keeper in his time.

Isaac Abraham, President of KDVA and also the uncle to the late Ralph echoed his sentiments and gratitude to the Reuben family for keeping the memory of the prolific Ralph alive through their annual sponsorship of the tournament.

The tournament is open to both the Premier league as well as the Division I league affiliated teams. At the draws done last Wednesday at the Quarts Convention Centre, favourites Grove end were pitted against Premier league outfits Randsons and Warriors whilst Warriors Sport whilst KSST and Manor were drawn in the bottom half.

Division I teams undefeated Frendz and Cool Leaders were drawn in the top half of the draw with Darnall United, Sunbrook and Manor Old Boys were drawn in the bottom half.

Randsons seemed destined to meet Grove End in the first semi-final but do

not right off The late Warriors who Ralph will meet Reuben Grove End in the quarter final and a victory for them will be the biggest upset of t h e season.

In the bottom half of the draw, Manor will have to overcome KSST in the quarter final to advance into the semifinal to meet either Darnall United or 2014 league champions Sunbrook.

Volleyball pundits have already predicted a Grove End/KSST final but bear in mind, knockouts are unpredictable and even the Division I teams can cause an upset or two.

Aslam Manjra with his Comrades Marathon bronze medal

Aslam Manjra, who runs in the colours of Shakaland Athletic Club, achieved what he had set out to do, to receive his green number and he achieved that after completing his 10th Comrades Marathon last Sunday in a time of 10:56 thus achieving a bronze medal. In his ten Comrades, Manjra has won 8 Vic Clapham medals for completing the race between 11 and 12 hours.

Vinash started with HD DECODER Manjra and they ran together until the 15km FULLY INSTALLED which helped Manjra achieve his goal.
