What a great reunion weekendwehadlastweek. To have so many (happy) people around the club gives the players, coaches, c o m m i t t e e s , s t a f f, volunteers and supporters a boost, that hopefully will last the rest of the season. Now we just need to work out how to get some of you back to the footy more regularly, especially the locals.

At the risk of sounding like an English cricketer, we did everything but win the seniors, goingdownbyonly 3 points. Unlike the cricket, the rain in the last ¼ probably didn’t help us. Until next time West. Best players were Sam Stafford, Darcy Arthurson, Nick McInerney, Jake Schutz, Jordan Hollitt and Cam Ortlepp.

The highlights in the reserves was the fact we didn’tneedanyunderagers to make up the numbers, and the guest umpire in Anthony Killer Kilsby, who was better with the whistle than he was playing last reunion weekend. Awards were given to Nick Mark, Josh Glidden, Brayden Howard, Brady Dethmore, Tyler Horrigan and Zach Clark Hang in boys, hopefully we will get some playersbackinthenextfew weeks.

After a fairly ordinary first 1/4, the U18s put in one of their better performances for year, running our convincing winners. There was plenty of individual and team brilliance, with best players hard to pick. None the less, named in the best were Jonty Collins,

Yellow & Black

Trae Hamilton, Cooper Turner, Darcy Bryan (3 goals), Zach Nulty and RichieKinyabugma.

The U16s were a few soldiers down, but never gave up and were coming home strong at the final siren, falling short by 6 points. Awards were given to Kade Allen, Cooper Turner, Alex Bruce, Ethan BrookandTateSmith.

Fletty took the reigns by himselfintheU14s,butthe boys (and Penny), didn’t m i s s a b e a t E s a i e Kulimushi cleaned up with 5 goals to get in the best players, together with Ethan Flett, Cooper Harris andJackDyson.

This week we welcome Millicent and our sponsors to Vansittart Park We couldn’t operate without t h e s u p p o r t o f o u r sponsors, so get around them and support their businesses (and put on a performanceforthem.

Please support the social functions and the coming events,asfollows;

Friday 1 September 2023 –Goods&servicesauction

Thank you to our major sponsors in Stuckey Electrical Contractors and KFC.

VLast week we welcomed back the Ballarat Boys (although they’re now spread all over Australia) for their annual Millicent Falla Memorial visit Millicent’s father Ash spoke eloquently of the work continuing in her honour. He also proudly announced the worthy recipient of the Millicent Falla medal as our Captain Jacob Carger for his determination in a comprehensive win againstSouth.

Lacking Clint and Gitta (congratulations on State duties men), Micah (work), Hags (OS) and Robbo (Scandinavian Equine Manvid Flu); we alsolostCreamearlywith a recurrence of his hamstring injury. Given the conditions, it was a v e r y p l e a s i n g performance of control, adaptation and poise

Tunks was another contender for best on, Fraze was named third (and booted 3 goals), Wormathisdashingbest, Jack with his sublime reading-of-play and Fish gloving them as if it wasn’t a winter sport Dredgie slotted 2 goals; singles to Cargs, Chipper, Worm, Fish, Cush, Jack a n d C l a n c y .

Congratulations and thanks to Brian Cawood who was promoted up from the U16s for his first senior game as Manager inRobbo’sabsence.

The Rezzies played well too, real well. They kept the ball alive and the

difference was player’s preparedness to push to contests and support their teammates and provideadisposaloption. We welcomed Joe Walks and Worm (Snr) back. 3 goals each to Poxy and S n o w ; 2 to Wo r m , Withers and Digga, singles to Nugget, Nat and Wobbles BT ’s workarateenabledhimto get to contests, read the givesandcrumbs, beston for a marshalling display. Charlie and Harry playing their second games in heavy conditions gave us pace. Evergreen Nat and Clay provide that stability and counter-possessions at important times. Joe was lively in his bionic hips.

Get behind the big rig Harry Willis who will no doubt be awesome and dangerous in his 50th game against North today. CongratsHazz!

Good to see Mason Redman’s value at the Dons being recognised with pen-to-paper in a long term deal. Would’ve lookedhorribleinaCrows guernsey.

Keep an eye on our socials over the coming weeks for some exciting items being auctioned online leading up to our Auction Night on 12th August.

Well we certainly knew it was footy season down at Millicent last weekend with the game being a real slog earlyin the conditions, the boys put there body over the ball and competedwellbutMillicentshowed why they are on top at the moment. The Ressies were around the mark early but got blown away in the 2nd half Best players were Jamo Sneath, Koby Chant, Josh Harvey, Luke Gray, Lloydo and Nick Adams following up fromthe18’s.

The 16’s continued on with their good brand of footy with Lewis Sigley, Jake Richter, Archie Milich, Isaak Bouchier, Emerson Forbes and Mason Bentley in the bests while Jace Maxwell continued his goal kickingformwithfour

The16’scontinuetoplaysomereally exciting team footy and this week Jace Maxwell was on the end of some good work picking up seven and the exciting Emerson Forbes

Just an update on coaching for next year with Kainy letting us know that he is stepping down as coach next year due to the time commitments required. I’d like to thank Kainy from allourplayersandsupportersforthe workthathehasdoneoverthelast3 years as coach. Kainy has taken the team to two Grand Finals in 2021 & 2022 and has shown great leadership this year with the development of our juniors, it’s been a great to watch the improvement through the year Not onlyhasheledtheclubbuthasbeen outstanding on the field leading the league goalkicking and playing interleague, zone carnival and playingstatecountryagainstWAlast year He has also been amazingly generous and selfless off the field, he is tireless worker around the club and has been instrumental in all of the recent club upgrades. There is some good news though and Kainy was the first one to sign on again for nextyearandwiththeculturehehas created he has helped to bring the playinggroupalongforanotheryear in2024.

VUps and Downs last weekend for the Cat Fans, two wins and two losses in the footy, Prez Ayton played his 150th senior game, C Grade Netballers played their socks off and won and Carlton got into the eight and then back out, upsanddowns.

The Under 14 Cats had another crack but fell just short at the end, their never give up attitude is an inspiration to us all, better players were Jett Lykke, Billy Rhook, Jagger Geary, Takudzwa Makore andNathanRobbins.

The Under 16's were able to fight off some fierce competition in the youngDoggies, kickingawayinthe last quarter, better players were Bay McKinnon, Elwood Geary, Jedd Rhook, Henry Dorahy and RileyHutchins.

It was Ressies day on Saturday so therewasnochancetheCatswere losing, because you need to work hard to earn a thirst and victory tastes sweet, cand Justin Carlins boys dare to dream, CARN RESSIES!

Better players in a top team effort were Hamish Carlin, Jarrad Smith, Andrew Russell, Thomas Searle, RickKilleyandKaneForbes.

Despite the special milestone for senior stalwart Dylan Ayton and

the games prior to spur them on the Senior Cats were not up to the task against a Doggies team keen to get their first win It was a learning experience for Kane Forbes'CatsandIknowwewillsee a better showing today because they have a lot of pride these lads andwillpickeachotherup.

Better players were Michael Krieger, Alaistair McCrae, Jarrod O'Brien,MattKilley,PatMilichand TomFoster

Hallelujah after a month of teasing us with some close losses the senior guys finally got on the winners list. The game was hard and physical and undisciplined at stages which kept the umpires on there toes With at least seven 50m penalties 1 send off and upon review of footage1playerandarunner on report which I hope appropriate penalties are handed down by the tribunal enoughaboutthat.

THE1970s:WBFL’SGREATESTERA No-onesawitcoming

1970sWERETHEBEGINNINGOFTHEEND

Part5

BYtheendofthe1970slocalfootballwasbooming,oratleast that’swhateveryonethought. Sometimes,somethingisstaringyou in the facebut you don’t seeit.

Itseemsextraordinarytoclaimthebeginningofthedemiseof the Western Border Football League happened at the same time the league appeared to be at its strongest, particularly fromaninter-leagueperspectivein1979and1980.

Perhapsthatiswhyno-onesawitcoming.

In hindsight, what is interesting is the beginning of the end was gaining momentum by 1980 but it started in 1979 and thereareseveralreasonsforthedemise.

In early 1973 a WBFL team made up of only the four Mount Gambierclubs,withGaryLazarusascaptain-coach,thrasheda visitingSouthAdelaideteaminamatchatVansittartPark.

As a result, South Adelaide became the laughing stock in Adelaide footy and media circles but by early 1979 there had been much healing done between the WBFL and South Adelaideafterthat1973defeat.

ItwasatimewhenWBFLwasatitsstrongestandevencapable ofbeatingAdelaideclubs.

By 1979 South Adelaide, coached by Hadyn Bunton jnr, were on the rise and played a full strength WBFL side pre-season at BlueLakeSportsPark.

North coach Barry Padley had arrived from Fitzroy and Jim Buckley from West Adelaide to bolster an already strong team. Buckley had come from Port Melbourne in the VFA and thenplayedwithWestAdelaide.Hewasabrilliantleaderwith bothSouthandWBFLleagueteams.

South Adelaide had recruited East’s Brooksby twins, Phil and Graham after their heroic performances in the 1975 and 76 grand finals and Phil would go on to play interstate football withSAatfullback.

The game was a cracker and played with little spite and WBFL wonbyafewpoints.

Laterin1979SouthAdelaidewentontolosetheSANFLgrand final to Port Adelaide, indicating how strong the WBFL side was.

But while the WBFL competition was strong and the interleaguesidewouldplayintwoVCFLchampionshipgrandfinals in the next three years, there were warning signs few saw coming, suggesting the “great days” of the league might soon beover

VFLclubswereintroublefinanciallyand already discussions had started about establishing a national league and by about 1982 South Melbourne was gone, off to Sydney to becometheSydneySwans.

AsotherstatesjoinedandtheVFLbecametheAFL,twothings happened. Firstly, the number of ex-league players from VFL and SANFL going to the country to earn good money stopped, mainly because they could earn just as much or more by staying closertoMelbourneorAdelaideandplayingwiththeVFAand other suburban and nearby country leagues as close as GeelongorouterAdelaide.

Instead of most sides having five or six recruits this dropped alarmingly and while some top notch coaches were still recruited, it became only a matter of time before this too, changed. Also some local clubs started to feel the financial pinch, with notably North Gambier falling into serious financial trouble in the early 1980s. West and others would follow in years to come.

One of the strengths of the WBFL during the 1970s was the depth of local talent each club possessed There were numerous players who stayed to play locally because of work, orlackofopportunity/incentivetomovetoAdelaide.

Thatstartedtochangeintheearly1980sastheSANFLstarted to raid country talent but the problem was there was little or no monetary return to clubs for these players and as a result, many top young players, such as Andrew Jarvis, Glenn Keast, Kevin Harris, Trevor and Colin McDonald, Robbie and Grant McKinnon, Brett Copping and Matthew Brookes were picked up by league clubs for virtually nothing, leaving country clubs strugglingforbothtalentandfunds.

Obviously, young players always had the opportunity to be picked up by league clubs if they were good enough, but with the lack of top recruits, and ex-league players as coaches, the loss of many young players forced down the standard at local level.

Althoughno-onerecogniseditthen,bytheearlytomid1980s attracting top VFL and SANFL players, such Carlton’s Bill Bennett, Fitzroy’s Darryl Peoples, Dennis Dare, West Torrens’ Paul Cummins, John Staker and Brian Clark, West Adelaide’s Greg Curnow, Tasmania’s Doug Norton-Smith and Lindsay Bell, Port’s Eric Freeman, Glenelg’s David Maczkowiack and Norwood’s Barry Smith,as wellas othertop Victoriancountry leagueplayers, hadcometoanend.

way, wellsortof, whentheysucceededinconvincingtheVCFL to allow them to transfer from the WBFL to the Hampden League.

However, there was a sting in the tail when they were told to amalgamate with their hated arch-rival Hamilton and Portland was also told they had to switch to the Hampden League leaving the WBFL with Casterton and a six team league.

FormostlocalfootyfanstherecentSANFLproposedsplitupof former WBFL clubs into two South East leagues is a “dog’s breakfast” and most appear to agree the Mid SE should have been left alone and two leagues – Upper and Lower SE would have been a better option, with teams from Naracoorte and south playing in one league and clubs above Naracoorte playinginanother

Regardless, almost everywhere regional footy stands at the crossroads, but for those who lived through the 1970s it was regarded as the WBFL’s greatest era and one which we will neverseeagain.

Through the 1970s all four Mount Gambier were financially sound, theirlicensedclubswereopensevendaysaweekwith evening meals and discos packing clubrooms Saturday and Sundaynights.

The young talent that was coming through the ranks in all clubs was extraordinary Some went on to play league footy but many others who were just as good or even better, decided to remain here in their home town to play with local clubs and rub shoulders with VFL, SANFL and Victorian league recruits.Theygotthebestofbothworlds.

In the 1970s Mount Gambier was a football town and footy wasalmostareligion.

It was the best of times and fortunately for those who lived throughthateratheywitnessedlocalfootballatitspeak. Sadly, itwillneverbethesameagain.

On the South Australian side, the government’s decentralisation program which had enticed many government workers, teachers, police and others to transfer to country centres, such as Mount Gambier, Penola and Millicentwasbeingdismantled.

The first thing which happened was from a political standpoint. Stafftransfersbetweenbanksalsostopped.

Fewer employment transfers cut down opportunities for footballrecruitstocometothedistrict.

Muchthesamewashappeningontheothersideoftheborder and farming centres such as Casterton, Coleraine and Heywoodwerefeelingthepinchaspopulationdwindled.

It took a decade for the full impact to be realised, but it was at theendofthe70swhenitallstarted.

Compounding this was the attitude of the VFL (later AFL) and theSANFL.

This was later followed by an end to the era of attracting exleague players as playing coaches such as Gary Lazarus (Fitzroy) , Bill James (Melbourne), Russell Crowe (Fitzroy) , John McBain (Port), John Dankert (VFA), Frank Davis (Melbourne), Bob Clayton (Port), Jim Buckley (West Ade), Barry Padley (Fitzroy), Col Saddington (Richmond, Sturt), Graeme Robbins (Richmond, South Ade), Neville Caldow (West Torrens), Shane McKew (South Melb), Barry Goodingham (North Melb), Ron Beattie (Hawthorn), Ian McGuiness(VFL)andMickTwomey(Collingwood).

Intothe1980sand90stherewastheoccasionaltopex-league coachsuchasMillicent’sRichardHill,Portland’sLeoKing, later Wayne Blackwell and West’s David Twomey, but an era had ended.

With good young players being drawn out of the area and virtually nothing coming in, the talent pool started to get smallerandsmaller

Added to this, was the fact smaller towns like Penola, Coleraine and Heywood were struggling to field competitive teams and more particularly were having trouble fielding a Thirds(under18)team.

History shows that all three eventually left the league and all didverywellinotherleagues.

The final nail in the coffin was when Imperials finally got their

ROUNDPREVIEWS

SOUTH GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD

CastertonSandfordrecoveredfroma poor start last round to put in a compeve second half to keep the scoreboard under control in their losstoEastGambier.

This weekend, a strong start will be key as they look to challenge South Gambier at Blue Lake Sports Park in the quest for a drought breaking victory.

Madalene Cleary has been on outstanding form at goal aack for the Cats and her bale with athlec South defender Ellie Bouchier will be onofthematchshapingmatchupsof thegame.

Cats shooter Ivy Lane is also coming off a strong performance and her ability to gain more possession up against Demons defender Sophie Wight will go a long way to keeping the Cats in the contest on the scoreboard.

At the other end, the defensive duo of Caeleigh Humphries and Ebany Jarrad will be looking to be at their close checking best to put the South shoong combinaon of Gracie Dalton and Alyssa Duncan under pressurefromthegetgo.

The mid court bales loom large as well with Casterton Sandford’s Madelina Paon, Chelsey Galpin and Chloe Foster taking on Tully McShane, Ruby Richter and Megan Reidinabaleoftheyoungguns.

South has both the encounters in 2023thusfarbutCastertonSandford hasclosedthemarginsotheDemons will need to be at their best to maintainthatperfectrecordoverthe Catsthisseason.

EASTGAMBIERVWESTGAMBIER

Reigning premiers West Gambier are headed to McDonald Park this weekend to take on East Gambier as the Roos look to keep their unblemishedrecordin2023intact.

West has been able to field its

premiership line-up in most matches this season and it has given the Roos an added advantage while in contrast east Gambier has baled injury and player unavailability all season and don’t have the smew chemistryofpreviousseasons.

Stopping Sarah Rier is the number one focus of most teams and while Morgan Amy will take that challenge onasherdirectopponent, shewillbe hopingBoCreek,ElizaColeandChloe Perryman can place plenty of pressure on their direct opponents –Lisa McGregor, Tara Bryant and Mikaela Horrigan – to ensure the feeds to Rier are delivered under pressure.

At the other end, it will take paence from the Bulldogs to work their way through the West defensive line of Zoe Malseed, Amy Cram and Jade Rier, withtheRoostriocomingoffa performance against North Gambier that really restricted the Tigers’ scoringopportunies.

Tarsh McCallum will be key to marshalling the troops at the offensive end for the Bulldogs while the work rate of Casey Horrigan will again be pivotal in opening up space intheshoongcircle.

Accuracy on the shot will also be important as Cram and Rier are rarelyoutrebounded.

East has had their moments of challenging the top sides but are yet to upset one of the contenders and West is probably not the team ripe forthepicking.

NORTHGAMBIERVMILLICENT

North Gambier would have loved to have cashed in on their stunning start last weekend against West Gambier and know they will have to bemoreconsistentintheirclashwith Millicent at Vansiart Park this weekend.

The Saints were challenged by South Gambier in Round 12 and no doubt have looked to iron out some wrinkles this week and North has

already defeated the Saints once this season meaning this looms as easily theghtestcontestoftheround.

Both teams have a similar challenge – limit the amount of ball the respecvetallmbershootersenjoy.

Both Tabatha Sanderson (Millicent) and Grace Pos (North) have been a dominant presence in their respecve goal circles and both have the benefit of classy goal aacks working in tandem and delivering the ball in Demi Verbena and Macey Griffith.

While the main responsibility for curbing the shooters’ influence will be Saints goal keeper Pora McRae and North’s Mikaila Pi, the respecve goal defenders –Millicent’s Lauren van Eeden and North’s Noni McConnell – will need to find the balance between shadowing their own opponent but also geng back to the circle for somehelpdefence.

The mid courts are well matched with every bale able to turn the contest.

ExperiencedTigerscentreMelRenko will go head to head with the hard running Lillie Paul, while Lauran Norman will look to use her athlecism and height to disrupt the influenceofDaisyTunkin.

The bale of the day could well be Saints wing defender Lisa Duldig lookingtodenyBriannaWaltersme and space to exert her influence on thecontest.

The Tigers would also call Stella Mobbs into acon as a shooter or defender, while Georgia Clark returned to the court last weekend fortheSaintsontheroadtorecovery from her knee reconstrucon giving Millicent another opon for the mid court.

It is almost too close to call but the Saintsinaghtone.

MILLICENTVSOUTHGAMBIER

It wasn’t a win but South Gambier could take heart from its Round 12 clash with Millicent, going down totheSaintsbyeightgoalsinaghtcontest.

The match looked set to follow a familiar script in the opening quarter as the slick saints fond Tabatha Sandersoninspacemeandmeagainwiththetall shooter neng 15 from 18 as Millicent worked s waytoafivegoalquartermelead.

Accuracy from South shooters Gracie Dalton and Alyssa Duncan kept the young Demons in touch, combining for 11 from 13 but the home side definitelylookedincontrolandsetforacomfortable win.

Missing defender Sophie Wight, South gave Mykaela Thiele the chance to take on Sanderson and thanks to some pressure on the feed from Tully McShane and Megan Reid, Thiele worked her way into the contest, restricng the Millicent goaler to ninegoalsinthesecondasSouthstartedtorampup thedefensivepressurealloverthecourt.

At half me the lead was seven and in the second half, it was all about the defensive end of the court as scoring opportunies were harder and harder to comeby

South converted a perfect 11 from 11 and won the quarterbyone, courtesyofsomestrongrebounding and turnover work from Thiele and Ellie Bouchier, and the match was well poised for an excing final quarter

Unlike the previous two rounds, where South has faded in disappoinng fashion to see both East and North secure comfortable victories, the young Demons stayed in the hunt and while they couldn’t makeinroadsintothedeficit, theywereabletokeep theSaintsontheirtoesunlthefinalwhistle. Demi Verbena was a huge factor in the Millicent victory with her perfect ball placement, her leadership in the aacking third and her accurate finishing.

Pora McRae and Lauren VanEeden also worked hard to win the ball back whenever the Demons threatenedandasalways, theSaintsmidcourtwere reliablewithballinhand.

Ellie Bouchier was again influenal with her ability tocreateturnoverballwhileattheotherend,Alyssa Duncan connued her 2023 consistency as she took charge of the offensive end of the court for South. CASTERTONSANDFORDVEASTGAMBIER

The Cats hosted the Bulldog at the weekend and while it was not the start Casterton Sandford was looking for, they did recover and a strong third quarter saw them work their way back into the contestinwhatwasamuchmoreevensecondhalf

East Gambier have tradionally been fast starters and they brought that in spades at the weekend withadevastang26-8openinghalf

Relentless defensive pressure was the foundaon for the dominant first half and then slick ball movement ensured that dominance was reflected onthescoreboard.

Ambah Beveridge suited up for her second A Grade match in the absence of Renee Henke and she took full advantage of the opportunity, presenng strongly and taking a lion’s share of the shoong responsibilies.

She shot 18 first half goals as she baled it out with tenaciousCatsdefenderEbanyJarrad.

Casterton Sandford just struggled to find an easy path to their shooters in the opening half, with mid court pressure from Eliza Cole and Chloe Perryman creang much of the turnover ball, with Morgan Amy and Bo Creek dominang the defensive circle andnotgivingupaneasyball.

The Cats only generated 18 scoring opportunies in thatfirsthalf,withEastenjoying42shotsongoal,so thescoreboardwasalwaysgoingtobelopsided.

Meg Smith entered the game for the home side at halfmewiththecentrebib, movingChelseyGalpin to the aacking wing, with circle defender Jarrad and Caeleigh Humphries also swapping roles and thechangeshadanimmediateimpact.

The Cats won the quarter 11-6 as Madalene Cleary found more me and space in range and need 10 from 12 for the quarter Smith and Galpin, along with her shoong partner Ivy Lane, started to use the ball more efficiently and refused to give up the easyturnoversofthefirsthalf

It meant by three quarter me the deficit had been reduced to 13 and then the final quarter was basically a goal for goal arm wrestle as Casterton Sandford showed what their best netball can look like.

While Cleary dominated the third quarter, it was East goal aack Casey Horrigan starring in the last, converng 10 from 12, as East got back on track to recordthe15goalvictory

NORTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER

It was the match of the round and North Gambier definitelycametoplay, shoongoutoftheblocksto taketheopeningquarter17-12.

Mel Renko, Brianna Walters and Macey Griffith were working the angels well in aack to find shooter Grace Pos in space and the Tigers goaler converted12from15.

It doesn’t take much to spring the reigning champs intoaconandthatopeningquartercertainlydid.

DefensivelytheRoosgotbacktobasicsandclamped down on their opponents, forcing errors from the faultless Tigers of the first quarter and reducing the amount of shots on offer as West slowly but surely workedtheirwaybackintothelead.

The defensive efforts all over the court were rewarded by Sarah Rier and Lisa McGregor who need a perfect 18 from 18 to take a one goal lead intothemainbreak.

The Roos connued in the same vein in the third, again really making things tough with their defensivepressure, whilesllmanagingtoworkthe ball into their own shoong circle with good precisionasthescoreboardpressuremounted.

West won the third quarter 14-9 to take a six goal leadintothefinalquarterandtheyonlybuiltonthat as the Roos again denied North easy scoring opportunies, whileRierandMcGregorconnued tofindspaceadfinishaccurately

In the end, the accuracy of West and the amount of scoring opportunies they generated told the story ofthematchandthefinal59-46scoreline.

Aer that dominant opening quarter from the Tigers, West kept the home side to 29 goals from 44 opportunies, while the Roos enjoyed a final three quarters that saw them convert 46 from 50 opportunies.

Tara Bryant was at her hard running best and her balewithMelRenkowasahighlightofthecontest.

Stella Mobbs took the wing defence bib for North in theabsenceofLauranNormanandtheTigerswould be hoping to start to sele their back court line-up as finals approach with injury, illness and player unavailability hampering their opportunity to put out a stable combinaon week in, week out, to this point.

It was an exciting win for the girls this week. Theyworkedreallywellasateam, displaying positive attitudes and fantastic teamwork. The girls worked together to link the ball down the court, displaying some seamless passages of play Our defensive pressure was strong, and the girls all worked incrediblyhard.

Best players awarded to Frankie Wakefield and Isla Clark (sponsored by Halloran Diesel) Both girls demonstrated their versatility in attack & defence VanCino encouragement award goes to Payton Bilney Our focus this week was to work together as a team, and the girls did that beautifully

We played a tight first half Our defensive pressure all over the court allowed us to disrupt West's play and take some good intercepts. Moving into next week, we need to collectively be more positive towards each other and trusting in our teammates. This will allow us to read off each other, providing leads into open spaces moving down the court, release the ball forward for the receiver to run onto and have some fun. Let'sgogirls!

A strong and consistent game by our team this week. It was evident that players were putting into practice the key areas we had been working on. Alisha Bryan and Alylcia Pitson were both accurate and connected well with mid court. Riley and Jessie took crucial intercepts and rebounds when we neededtoshiftthemomentumofthegame. Ava worked tirelessly all game, holding up the opposition in their drives, causing a slower game. With a clean, well connected first quarter we saw our team go up by 4 in the first quarter We had lots of defensive touches and were able to contest in the circle to capitalise on our turnovers. Our goal was to slowdowntheirentryintowest’sGSwhoisa big target for them. We had to adjust our normal attacking line up to a more zone like defence, which we were able to do in the firstquarter However, afterthaterrorscrept into our game and where we were scoring off turnovers, we found that harder as the gamewenton. Mikailahadarippergamein GK and Bri feed well and withstood some physical pressure. We were disappointed with our last half of netball. Especially when westartedsowell.

A very consistent game had by all, just needtoremembertobesteadyonourfeet and slow down when we get a turnover Fantastic efforts at both ends of the court with some exceptional intercepts and great shooting. A great team effort which resulted in securing a very big win 20-1. Best players and awards went to Maggie Buhlmann (Dentons and Subway) and Layla Rainsford (Wendy's and Bakers Delight).

Another great game from the girls. We started off strong with an 18-goal quarter and continued to build our lead throughout the game. The girls worked hard and in the last quarter were able to switch up their positions for some fun. It was awesome to see Lindy back out on court after breaking her arm Keep working hard at training girls to get ready for finals. Best players were Scarlett Zalme and Indi Coghlan. Awards went to Amarlie Thomson (Chook House), Lucy Crowe (Shearers Cook), and Lola Ferguson (Boost).

Good work today girls. It was good to see what we have been working on at training beimplementedintoyourgame.Everyone worked hard to come in front and call for the ball The transition coming out of defence worked well with it then being able to be rewarded. Awards went to Clara (Dentons Sportspower) and Lindy (Zambreros).

Our Under 15A team started off well defensively keeping South to 4 goals for the quarter Down our offensive end, we wereforcingtheballintoourgoalieswhich caused a few errors The team still managing to score 16 by quarter time. The second quarter was by far the best. South only scored 2 goals but we kept increasing ourscore.Bytheendofthegametheteam had steadied in offence and kept the pressure in defence to get a win of 58-17. Best Players were Emily and Piper Awards went to Mylee Lynch (Ducky's) & Kalani Dunn(Zambreros).

U15Bs-53to12

The girls started well and continued that form for the first half Ella Matthews was dominant at WA driving hard and finding the goalies with accurate passing. In the second half the girls stepped up a gear in attack with some swift passages of play down court and great goalie connections. Our defensive pressure and reading of the play were great. A great team effort game. Best players were Emily Walker and Lexi Nicholls. Awards went to Ella Matthews (Chook House) and Asha Gysbers (MillicentChemist).

U17s-65to21

A much-improved game today in wet conditions. Our transition into attack was strong with great passing into the goalies. The timing down the court was great in passages with everyone reoffering and leading into space. A big welcome back to Bree playing her first game since breaking her arm. Another thank you to our under 15’s stepping up and filling in for us whenever we need them. Let’s keep this momentum up coming into a rough North

We had an awesome game Saturday, starting off slow we worked our way through the game improving each quarter We didn’t make it an easy win for South as wecontinuedtofightthewholegamewith somegreatsecondeffortsdownthewhole court. Captain Bella Pollifrone consistently kept the game alive and controlled the plays down the court We had Asha Gysbers, Jeda Hibberd and Mackinlee Alcock back from our 15s and 17s sides who all played amazing and are fitting well into the team. I feel like we really worked well this week and can really take it up to these teams in the next few weeks. Good work C grade girls. Best players were Layla and Asha. Awards went to Bella (Dentons) andLisa(NewHeaven).

Very wet and cold start for the girls today! We came out firing and had a great start, we knew South would come back hard against us, but we kept consistent on everything we have been working on at training. We had some great passages of play throughout the game Everyone worked hard and played their role well. Consistent pressure across the court and kept level heads. Very proud coach here to come away with a 7-goal win. Best players were Krystal Coghlan and Michelle Fleming. Awards went to Krystal (Sassi) andNicole(Pierinas).

AReserve-55to47

Once again, we played in cold and wet conditions! We adjusted our line-up with Jac away with Alana & Piper having a run throughthecentreandbothdidagreatjob providing plenty of drive and hitting circle edge to feed. Abby & Ryls combined well acrosstheattackinglineandAbbyfinished well in the first half with some long-range shooting. Keeley, Alice & Keish worked hardtostopthedriveofSouthandprovide us with more opportunities. Once again, the heavens opened just on start time which once again forced us to adjust to wet conditions. We started well but to South’s credit they lifted which resultedingoalforgoalshootout.

Lisa had a consistent game leading the front-linedefenceonwingandhadarun-in centre. Lillie was steady all game playing both centre and wing defence Our transitions out of defence were improved. Great to see hard work at training implemented Daisy never stopped running all day providing a target both at centre pass and circle edge. The Tab to Demi connection had South’s defence on their toes under pressure all day Portia snapped up any loose balls and took some nice overhead interceptions at post whilst Laurenprovideduswith4quartersofhard close contesting defence. It might bot have resulted in victories but our A and A reserve teams did us proud at the weekend when they took on the mightofMillicentandcompeted stronglyforfourquarters…

For the A Grade, coming off two rounds where they had faded badly in final quarters, to go toe to toe with the second ranked Saints was a real credit to the youngline-up.

Mykaela Thiele stepped up into the goal keeper role and again showed she is more than up to the task, taking on the tough job of denying Tabatha Sanderson too much ball and it was one of the Millicent shooter’s more quietgamesfortheseason…

Ellie Bouchier was again influential, getting some important touches, rebounding strongly and also being importantintransition…

Tully McShane is the ultimate quiet achiever Playing wing defence can be a thankless role as so often the main aim is merely denying your opponent ball but that is what Tully did at the weekend, not allowing Daisy Tunkin to be too influential and denying easy access to the circle’s edge and putting pressureoneverypass…

Megan Reid is another quiet achiever – she just runs hard every week and is careful with ball in hand and she was as consistent as ever through the midcourt…

Ruby Richter has thrived in her return to the top side and not only does she hit the circle hard and run all day but she is a sneaky defensive asset with her willingness to try and win the ballback…

Alyssa Duncan continues to be a shining light in this team and a strong leader. She controls the attacking end of the court with her direction and strong leads and has mentored Gracie Dalton as they build a strong shooting partnership Alyssa does a mountain of work up the court to bring the ball down and then takes control in the goal third to

ensure a good shooting position isfound.

Grace Dalton has been a revelation in the A Grade team with her composure and willingness to compete – the experience she has gained and the talent she has shown in her debut season bodes well for the future…

The A Reserve was also impressive despite not winning thegameastheytookonthetop rankedMillicentteam.

Mykaela did a great job in defenceonarguablythegreatest playertheWBNAhaseverseen–DonnaDenton–andshestuckat thetaskandwonplentyofball.

Charlene had a great battle with Abby Denton and her ability to get her hands on the ball and disrupt the Saints efforts to score was impressive… She was also critical in bringing the ball downcourt…

Joirdy Bell, Chelsea Ryan and Maddie Burley controlled the wings–tightcheckingindefence and strong driving when in offence and their work rate to ensure we kept possession and foundawaytoscore…

Caitlin was impressive again as she ran hard against a couple of (younger!!!) opponents but she was still hugely influential in both offence and defence and her leadership is always important…

Jaymee was a running machine again, offering time and time again to give her team mates a safe outlet and her shooting in difficult conditions was accurate She also got some importantdefensivetouches…

Georgia has hit her straps in the past few weeks and she made good position in the circle and finishedaccuratelytoensureher team mates were rewarded for winningtheballback…

Both sides have had some tough times in 2023 but Round 12 (outside of their wins) was a round to be proud of and build on…

It was the super seven in the A Reserves last Saturday that took the win from East Gambier Claire and Sharna were a consistent presence in the defensive goal circle, putting the opposition on edge allowing for multiple turnover opportunities It didn’t take long to move the ball from the defensive end into attack with centre court players Dani and Gaby putting some neat and fast drives into their games to play with high percentage possessions. Meg’s efforts and skill in the centre position didn’t go unnoticed and was highlighted across the court, including her impeccable feeding into goalies Tori and Paige. Paige’s accurate shooting allowed the girls to stretch their lead and by the final quarter the game saw the only position change when Tori wentbackintoGSandPaigeouttoGA, giving Tori a well-earned rest after an incredible three quarters of actively switching from attack to defence and vice versa. The 37-goal win was well deserved by the seven girls who are demonstrating fantastic teamwork, consistency, andskills.
