Hepatitis B kills faster than Aids You are more likely to die of hepatitis B (HBV) than HIV/Aids if you do not go for immunisation against the virus, a research agency has warned. Kenya Medical Research Institute

(KEMRI) researcher Vincent Ruto told XNews the disease is more infectious than HIV because of the more modes of transmission and late detection.

voice of authority: Vincent Ruto, a researcher at KEMRI, has adviced Kenyans to be wary of Hepatitis B, which he says is easier to contract than HIV/AIDs.

Hepatitis B kills faster than Aids, expert warns HBVs cause irritation and swelling or inflammation of the liver impairing its detoxification process, formation of red blood cells, among other functions. It is transmitted when one gets into contact with body fluids from an infected person or a touches a surface with the virus. “Unprotected sex, getting into contact with contaminated blood, saliva or sweat makes one susceptible to this contagious virus,” Mr Ruto says. However, blood transfusion process is safer these days because of through screening. Most patients suffering from HBV do not show symptoms. This makes early detection hard, giving room for further spread. “It is asymptomatic, meaning it

From Page 1 Hepatitis B is 50 to 100 times more infectious than HIV. It is a serious disease that people do not bother to check until it is discovered alongside other infections or when they are screened before travelling,” says Mr Ruto. The research assistant says there are multiple modes of transmission from an infected to a healthy person because the virus can stay for long on dry surfaces and still be infectious. “This virus can survive on a dry bench for almost a week and still be infectious. This increases chances of transmission to close family members if the virus is gets into contact with household items,” he says.

does not easily show signs that will alarm one to go to seek medical help,” Mr Ruto said. Symptoms such as loss of appetite, fatigue, muscle and join aches, yellow skin and dark urine nausea may mean one is HBV positive. Mr Ruto says infection from the virus is accelerated by co-infection from other diseases such as HIV. The effect will accelerate liver cirrhosis and cancer, making it a silent killer. He said some cultural practices should be shunned to curb further spread of the virus. “Body piercing and tattoos, circumcision, and giving birth at home increases chances of contracting the virus. Mothers should deliver in hospitals to avoid transmission to their children and

for the children to be immunized,” says Ruto. The World Health Organisation says about 57 per cent of liver cirrhosis and 78 per cent of liver cancer result from HBV. The organisation says about 2 billion people have been infected by HBV with around 360 million suffering from chronic liver infections. The virus kills more than 620,000 around the globe annually despite the vaccine being available since 1982. Mr Ruto says the vaccine was only available to children since 1982, but now it can be accessed by all, therefore, people should go for it. He says 95 per cent of adult deaths are due to this disease.

US warns of terrorists bid to escape airport vetting Airlines with direct flights to the US have been told to tighten screening of mobile phones amid fears terrorists could use them in bomb attacks, reports Sky. US officials singled out Apple iPhones and Samsung Galaxy handsets for extra security checks. They will apply to US-bound direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the officials said. The new precautions come in response to requests from US authorities, who fear attacks on planes flying to America. US security officials said they fear bomb makers from the Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) have worked out how to turn the phones into explosive devices which can avoid detection.

Mugabe ministers to lose land for backing whites in land reforms Cabinet Ministers and other leaders who are fronting for former white commercial farmers could lose their farms for undermining the principle of black economic empowerment, President Robert Mugabe warned on Thursday. The move followed reports that some of the ministers and chiefs were leasing farms to whites. Others have been accused of under-utilising land allocated under the land reform programme. Mugabe accused lieutenants of “supping (dining) with whites” and vowed that no farmland would return to

white hands. The President said sub-letting farms was undermining the essence of the reform programme. “Some of my ministers are are refusing to remove white farmers from their constituencies,” he said to applause from people who attended the launch. Mugabe said chiefs are supposed to be custodians of land but are corruptly involved in illegal deals. “We are told chiefs are also involved in the deals. Can we do that Mr Charumbira (Chief Fortune Charumbira president of chiefs council)?

Can we be seen arresting chiefs? This is an issue which we will fight against,” he said. Mugabe said those who were leasing land risk losing it as an audit would reveal the true occupants of the properties. He said all underutilised land would be re-allocated to deserving applicants. At least 79 new farmers were given new permits in Mashonaland, West province. The permits, which were issued for the benefit of the permit holder and their dependants, were valid for an indefinite period.

A total of 15, 000 security officers will be on guard with some to be stationed around the city centre. Other police battalions will be assigned to separate those attending the rally from Kenyans willing to report to work or to attend to other businesses.

Some police officers will be deployed to slum settlements which are seen as the most volatile areas as others patrol major roads in the city. “The National Police Service will ensure all the people who will enter the venue are thoroughly screened to make sure no one enters the

Upgrade of 31 colleges in progress The government is upgrading 31 colleges to technical institutions as part of the Vision 2030. Technical Vocational Education Training Authority chairman Wilson Ogola yesterday told the Fourth International Conference for colleges at the Eldoret Polytechnic that the upgrade is taking place in phases. “The aim is to help the country have adequate manpower to achieve Vision 2030,” he said.

KNEC makes changes on KSCE timetable This year’s KCSE timetable has been released in a schedule that shows much departure from the past. Candidates will begin with practical and optional subjects as has been in the past, but in the first week of the examinations, which begin on October 21, students sit for optional subjects such as Business Studies, Physics and Geography unlike previously when they sat compulsory subjects like English, Kiswahili and Mathematics in the first week.

Mr Buke, who was accompanied with his lawyer Harun Ndubi, however, had his request for witnesses testimony rejected. Mr Chepkonga, maintained that testimonies be submitted in written form.

According to Mr Buke, the electoral bosses were incompetent to have ignored blatant election malpractices in the 2013 general elections and thus a tribunal should be formed to send them home. Buke also stated that the

Men make first million by age 51, women have to wait till 70 On average, a man will have ‘earned his first million’ by the age of 51 while a woman won’t hit those fabled 7 digits until she is 70. A report, from international insurance giant Prudential, has revealed that women have to wait a whole 19 years because their salaries tend to be so much lower than men’s. But it’s not necessarily because of gender inequality in the workplace. “In general, Men and women gravitate towards different careers,” explains Carrie Lukas, the Managing Director of the Independent Women’s Forum. She says that the most popular choices for men tend to pay more than the

most popular choices for women. For instance, in Kenya, there are more men vying for high-paying engineering and finance-based jobs than women, according to John Randa, the World Bank’s Economist for Kenya. He also notes that more than half of family farm workers in Kenya are women, 3.8 million, compared to men who make up 2.7 million Another reason that a woman’s pay stops outpacing a man’s at around age 30, which is when college-educated women start having children. Their responsibilities, though valuable, take a toll on their work life.

The earlier deadline set by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) for final revision of courses expired today but was extended. “The extension is given to allow more students to make their second and final choices,” said KUCCPS chief executive John Muraguri said. The students risk being locked out of universities and colleges of they fail to meet the demands for course choices. More than 30,000 applicants are expected to meet the requirements for various courses in colleges and universities to avoid being locked out. The revision started last week following an earlier report by the KUCCPS. The process targets 16,000 students seeking to pursue degree programs in public universities while the rest seek opportunities in colleges for diploma and certificate programmes. “Candidates listed on kuccps.uonbi.ac.ke as having qualified for degree programmes but had been picked for diplomas may also apply for degree courses,” Muraguri said. For degree programmes, candidates will choose up to eight courses of their choice while those of diploma will choose six courses as revealed by the earlier KUCCPS report. Diploma students who for many years have only been accepted by their local colleges will now be accepted to any college they qualify for throughout the country without area restrictions.

Tanzania maize imports to reduce flour prices The price of maize flour is set to fall after the Government announced plans to import maize from Tanzania. “The consignment we will get from our neighbours will play a major role in bringing down the cost of flour that is beyond the reach of majority of Kenyans,” Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei told a press briefing. On Thursday, Koskei, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tanzanian government that will allow for Kenyan traders to tap into the neighbouring state’s national food reserves in a deal which was initiated on June 5, 2014. “We harvested 58 million bags of maize this year, registering a huge surplus. The government of Kenya requested that we sell them part of our stocks to curb the shortage,” said Mr Christopher Chiza, the Tanzanian Agriculture minister. The government will buy up to 2.4 million bags of maize from Tanzania at a cost of Sh2, 650 per a 90-kilogramme bag at a cost of Sh300 per bag. The maize shortage has raised the cost of a 90-kg bag in Kenya to Sh3, 200, up from Sh2, 900 in April and Sh2, 500 in October. This has forced the price of

The current ones have made it easy for fraudsters to generate fake replicas. The ministry says they are not aware of fake deeds in circulation. us warns of terror threat on entebbe Airport The US has issued an alert over a possible terror attack on Entebbe International Airport, in Uganda. Security agencies have mounted patrols in and around the airport as well as in the capital Kampala. The warning was among many others issued to countries in the East Africa region which has recently come under attack from Al Shabaab militia. The US Embassy in Uganda did not specify the nature of the threat but said the targets include hotels, restaurants, night clubs, shopping malls, diplomatic missions, transportation hubs, religious institutions, government offices and public transport. Ugandan Army spokesperson Paddy Ankunda said troops had been deployed and security officials were on high alert. “People must be vigilant in the face of the threat by reporting any suspicious individual seen in their areas. He also asked citizens to remain calm. Security checks in the reported “targeted” areas have been heightened even as latest reports indicate that terror groups are now re-designing explosive devices to ensure they cannot be detected by anti-terror equipment in use.

US man sexts women as his baby dies in the car A 33-year-old man has been accused of deliberately leaving his son in a hot car to die while he exchanged explicit texts with women. Detectives testifying against the accused told a court in Georgia, USA that the man was sending and receiving texts, some of them nude photos, from six women while his 22-month old son was dying. Lawyer for Justin Ross Harris objected to the testimony by Georgia police detective Phil Stoddard but

the judge allowed it. According to the police, Harris left his toddler, Cooper, strapped into a car seat under a baking sun for seven hours while he went to work on June 18. Records show that the mercury topped 92 that day, and police say the temperature was 88 degrees when the boy was pronounced dead in a parking lot not far from his father’s workplace At the hearing, Cobb County Chief Magistrate Frank Cox found probable

cause for the case against Harris to move forward with respect to murder and child cruelty charges. “For him to enter the car ... when the child had been dead and rigor mortis had set in, and the testimony is the stench in the car was overwhelming at that point in time, that he -- in spite of that -- got in the car and drove it for some distance before he took any action to check on the welfare of his child, I find there is probable cause for the two

charges contained in the warrant,” Cox told a packed courtroom. The judge denied bail for Harris, who has pleaded not guilty. In addition to the charges he faces in connection with his son’s death. Harris may also be charged with felony sexual exploitation of a minor and misdemeanor illegal contact with a minor, Stoddard said. The detective also testified about Internet searches that could raise eyebrows given the context of the case.

Failure rate in trials of new drug worries scientists Scientists have called for an urgent need to increase the number of potential therapies being investigated after 99 per cent drug trials for Alzheimer’s disease during the past decade failed. A study published in the journal Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy shows only one new medicine has been approved since 2004. The drug failure rate is troubling and higher than that for other diseases such as cancer, the researchers say. Dr Jeffrey Cummings, of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, in Las Vegas, and colleagues, examined a public website that records clinical trials. Between 2002 and 2012, they found 99.6 per cent of trials of drugs for preventing, curing or improving the symptoms of Alzheimer’s had failed or been discontinued. This compares with a failure rate of 81 per cent for cancer drugs. The failure rate was “especially troubling” given the rising dementia prevalence. “There is a worrying decline in the number of clinical trials for Alzheimer’s treatments in more recent years,” the study says. “There is a danger that the high failure rates of trials in the past will discourage pharmaceutical companies from investing in dementia research. The only way we will successfully defeat dementia is to continue with high quality, innovative research, improve links with industry and increase investment in clinical trials.” Dr Eric Hill, of the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University, said more research was needed to understand Alzheimer’s .

Mobile wars to cut cash transfer costs A move by Equity Bank and two new mobile network operators could drive down the cost of mobile money transfers. As equity prepares to launch an upgraded mobile money system, the heat is on established operators to either reduce their prices or risk losing their customers. Last month Equity Bank, in a partnership with mobile service provider, Airtel, unveiled a service that will help the bank reduce its cost of delivering mobile services to its customers. “If we take the example of Equity Bank’s new regime, sending and receiving money will cost one per cent of the value,” said Equity Bank agent, Deogratias Kathurima. “This means

that a customer will part with only Sh1 to withdraw Sh100, while the maximum charged for withdrawal of any amount is Sh25. This is good for both customers and agents.” The lender jokingly called the move ‘Equity 3.0’ in order to assure competitors that it was not a new mobile money platform but an improvement on an existing system. “We are not starting a new service,” explained Equity Bank CEO, James Mwangi in an earlier statement. “We are going a step further by leasing unused capacity on Airtel Kenya’s network to scale up our offerings.” Using Airtel’s network and a system which employs what are known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators

(MVNO), Equity hopes to turn the mobile money market on its head. An MVNO is a cell phone carrier (such as a prepaid wireless carrier) that does not have its own network set-up. It uses the networks of bigger cell phone carriers like, say, Airtel Kenya. The system will allow users to be issued with branded SIM cards and provide services similar to those offered by mobile service operators. The SIM cards are tiny and can latch on to existing SIM cards so users don’t have to lose their current mobile phone numbers. Kathurima said the expected regime would see customers pay lower fees than they currently are on M-Pesa, Airtel Money, YuCash and Orange Money.

Facebook buys video advert firm Facebook has acquired LiveRail, a technology start-up that helps companies place more relevant advertisements in videos that appear on websites and applications. The financial terms of the deal were not revealed. However, it is believed that it cost the social network firm between $400 million (Sh35.1 billion) and $500 million (Sh43.9 billion) to buy the firm. LiveRail helps online publishers such as PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) make money from videos they produce by connecting them to advertisers who want to buy ads through an automated bidding process. Facebook is targeting up to seven billion video ads

per month on the web and on mobile. Earlier this year, it had said it would start serving ads to third-party mobile apps through a new network. It is estimated that more than £1bn (Sh150 billion) was spent on mobile ads in UK alone in 2013. This has led to social networking platforms, including Twitter, to consider ways to attract more advertisers to tap into the sector’s growth. Last year, Twitter acquired MoPub a mobile advertising exchange that acts as a mediation service, allowing marketers to manage the placement of advertisement across several networks, including Facebook.

US retail giant bans customer guns Following a series of violent shootings in parts of US Target, a ‘family-friendly’ retail giant has asked customers not to bring guns into its stores. “We respectfully request that guests not bring firearms to Target, even in communities where it is permitted by law,” Target CEO, John Mulligan wrote in a statement on the company›s corporate blog. He said that guns were not part of the retailer’s ‘family atmosphere.’ Gun control activists have since applauded Target’s new rule. “Moms everywhere were

horrified to see images of people carrying loaded assault rifles down the same aisles where we shop for diapers and toys,” Shannon Watts, the founder of advocacy group, Moms Demand Action wrote in a statement. Her group was pleased with Target’s decision to take action. History The US has been plagued by a series of shootings over the past few months. The country has what other nations describe as lax gun control rules, allowing virtually anyone over the age of 21 to own a firearm. Recent incidents include a

shooting in New Orleans on June 29, 2014, where 9 people were injured. The shootings have sparked outrage from activists who have called on the US government to enforce stricter gun control rules. In mid-June, members of a group called Open Carry Texas demonstrated against the enforcement of these rules by carrying rifles in a Target branch in the area, leading to a rebuke from the National Rifle Association for their tactics. Implications Targets move may encourage other companies and businesses to do the same. In

light of the incidences as a way to protect their customers as well as their brand. Target, which operates in more than 1,700 stores in the US, now joins fellow large retail chains, Starbucks and Chipotle in disallowing guns inside their establishments. President Obama has proposed several federal gun control measures in recent years, including tightening the background check system. However, Congress, a legislative branch of the government, has declined to act under pressure from the powerful gun lobby.

Nairobi residents have been described as some of the most peculiar consumers. Some of the reasons behind the tag include the fact that majority of them spend 12 per cent net salary on rent. While experts advise income earners to use up to 30 per cent of pay on housing, Nairobi tenants use almost a third of the recommended amount. A survey describes about 70 per cent of Nairobi’s population (more than 2 million) with average salary of Sh11,274. The study was carried out by Djesika Amenda, Steven Buigut and Shukri Mohamed, researchers from the African Population and Health Research Centre in Nairobi. From their income, about Sh1,298 is spent on rent because housing is expensive across the county. Most Nairobi estates have experienced a rise in rent prices in the past year.

Sakina Hassanali, head of research for real estate company, Hass Consult, says the asking price for rents in South C, South B, Upper Hill and Muthaiga North have risen by up to 20 per cent. South B has witnessed a 19 per cent hike in average rental asking price. It has jumped to Sh35,200 per month from Sh29,500 a year ago. The study shows that more than half of the 2 million residents share sanitary facilities in their dwellings. These include toilets, bathrooms and showers. This is unlike Nairobi’s fortunate 30 per cent of residents who have self-contained facilities. Amenda says “formal employment, owning a business and rent-free housing” are luxuries that most Nairobi residents cannot afford.

CASH COWS: Milk yield depends a lot on how and what dairy cattle are fed on.

Dairy farmer triples his milk production It is the desire of every farmer to increase their yield and Laban Talam is no different. The shares allow them to access credit and free

bizbrief Trouble as ivory prices in China triple There is likely to be no let-up in the poaching menace after reports that the price of ivory in China, the world’s biggest ivory market, has tripled. A report by Save the Elephants, an anti-poaching campaign group said the surge in the price is driving a wave of poaching. “It shows little sign of abating. With the ivory price in Africa a tenth of that in China, substantial profits are being generated for organised crime that fuels insecurity, corruption, and deprives local communities of valuable income,” says the report released on Thursday. Researcher, Dr. Esmond Martin said the average price for quality 1 to 4 kg tusks in Beijing early 2014 was $2,100 (Sh182,700) per kg. “The average price for similar tusks in 2010 was $750 per kg,” he said. Dr Martin and Lucy Vigne, did a month-long survey of hundreds of Chinese retail outlets and factories in Beijing and Shanghai and contrasted their findings with prices they had established in Fuzhou four years ago.

veterinary services. A share in the dairy company costs Sh100 and Talam owns 3,000 of them, making him the second largest shareholder. “And my aim is to be the biggest shareholder,” he says. Talam was not always as successful as he is now. He started his venture on modest grounds with only one cow had a poor milk production and was prone to diseases. Cattle feed was also a problem for Talam. He relied

on napier grass and commercial cattle fodder to feed his cow. However, that was short lived as the cost of commercial cattle feed jumped to Sh2, 600 for a 90kg bag in 2008, up from Sh1,500 before. “And I could only feed my one cow for a week with this,” he recalls. All hope was lost until a friend introduced him to unique fodder shrubs known to increase milk production in cows.

With nothing to lose, he bought the first packet and planted them on his farm. After three months, they were ready for harvesting. It took him another two months before his fortunes turned. “I was getting three litres of milk but the shrubs now increased the milk production up to 9 litres. It is prudent for owners of new businesses to test their products or services before releasing them to the market. That’s where Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) comes in. Tony Dunn, a lecturer from the Charles Sturt University, says that RRA is a cheap method used to gather information about a particular item or service before it is officially sold to the public. The system works by simply giving a group of people an item and asking them to test it for themselves. “RRA emerged in the late 1970s in response to some of the problems scientists had with large-scale, structured questionnaires and surveys,” says Dunn. He says that it provided an alternative technique for anyone to quickly learn from local people about their realities and their challenges. Selling frozen chapatis, for instance, has proven to be successful after a group known as Burhani Bakers tested their product on bachelors living around Nairobi. However, RRA is not entirely accurate since it relies on personal opinions rather than scientific research. However, it is sometimes successful, owing to the fact that the people being tested may share the same opinions as many others living in and around their location.

Lung disease risk for 25m kerosene users

RISKY AFFAIR: Costly, polluting, unhealthy, and unsafe, this kerosene lamp can burn up more than 1/3 of this Kenyan woman’s weekly income.

Close to 25 million Kenyans are at risk of getting lung disease and tubercolosis as the use of Kerosine continues to take a toll on their health. As many as 1.5 million of them may develop lung cancer in the coming years if they do not switch from kerosene to a less dangerous source of fuel, Health Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia has said. “Indoor air pollution is a serious challenge facing not only Kenya but most other low and middle income countries,” he said during a sensitising campaign dubbed, ‘Brighten up a Life’. Macharia noted that 60 per cent of the country uses harmful kerosine since they either have no access to or cannot afford to pay for electricity. “In Kenya, more than half the population is off the electricity grid in both urban and rural settings due to varied reasons. These sources, in the

long run, cause high levels of household air pollution that have many health damaging pollutants like soot particles that penetrate deep into the lungs,” he said “The state of the economy has left many Kenyans using kerosene and other fuel based sources as their primary sources of lighting and cooking, exposing them to numerous health hazards.” “The use of kerosene for lighting and cooking equates to smoking two packs of cigarettes per day,” argues Doctor Jeremiah Chakaya, Head ofthe Kenya Association for Prevention of TB and Lung Disease. “This is how serious the problem is.” Six percent of lung cancer deaths are a due to household air pollution. In order to address the problem the Brighten up a Life campaign, a three-month project, targets at least 50,000 Kenyans in eight counties withe the highest use of kerosene.

Saba Saba is finally here The most awaited day for the ‘well-being’ of Kenyans is soon approaching. With just a few sunrises and sunsets, the day our maturity is going to weigh is nearing. We will be weighed based on how much we can withstand senseless politicking. We will be assessed based on how much we incline towards tribal connotations and how hate we have for our neighbours. My fellow Kenyans, let’s show maturity that has never been witnessed in the history of this nation. Let’s stand for our rights and express them without infringing on others’ rights. — Arnold Okoth, Nairobi

Drink yoghurt for good skin FRIday, July 4, 2014

Yoghurt is not just a thick, tasty and creamy drink. It is also quite beneficial when it comes to skin care, especially for the feet and the hands. It contains a bacteria called acidophilus, which helps in the digestion of food, improving the functioning of the immune system and preventing imbalances in the body’s yeast levels. A clinical study by Danone, a French food products multinational corporation, showed that daily consumption of yoghurt improved the quality of the skin. They launched their own cosmetic yogurt known as Essensis. The zinc and lactic acid helps in the shedding of dead skin cells, smooth out the rough lines, tighten pores, hydrate dry patches leaving one with a shiny glow. The best kind of yogurt to use is the unsweetened or the plain type because the flavoured varieties can cause irritations or rashes when applied to the skin.

Dry hands and feet can be treated with yoghurt too. When yogurt is applied on the hands and feet, the skin not only becomes soft and supple almost instantly but the cuticles are also cured that is they are no longer dry or damaged. The proteins in yoghurt also accelerate nail growth making them strong, healthy and shiny. Yoghurt also helps cure cracked heels or athlete’s foot. By gently massaging some yogurt on the affected areas one will see noticeable results in just a few weeks. The bacteria acidophilus kills the fungus that causes athlete foot leaving the feet cured, healthy and soft. The lactic acid in the yogurt acts as an exfoliant by removing the dry skin, heeling the cracked heels and leave one feeling refreshed and comfortable. One can choose to add lemon juice to the yogurt when applying it for even better results.

Reina set for Liverpool return after loan expires Pepe Reina will spend the next season at Liverpool following the end of his loan spell with Napoli, the goalkeeper’s agent has confirmed. The 31-year-old has two years remaining on his deal with Liverpool but was loaned out to Serie A for the duration of last season as Brendan Rodgers made Simon Mignolet his number one stopper at Anfield. With the rising uncertainty of the Spaniard future, his agent has broken the long silence about his career. “I know rumours are circulating about Reina’s future. But I can confirm that next season Pepe will play for Liverpool,” he told Tuttonapoli.it.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have been among the clubs linked with a bid for Reina this summer, but agent Manuel Garcia Quillon says he will be returning to his parent club. Reina’s agent added that the goalkeeper will respect his deal with the English side and return to Liverpool till his contract comes to an end. Barcelona are reportedly looking for his signature following the departure of their number one stopper Victor Valdez, whose Monaco move is still pending. Napoli head coach Rafael Benitez admitted Napoli were unable to afford a permanent move for the Spain international.

back home: Goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who has been on loan at Napoli, will return to Manchester United, his parent team after the expirey of his loan deal.

Young United duo return to try their luck with van Gaal Angelo Henriquez and Guillermo Varela made their way back to Manchester yesterday in preparation for the beginning of pre-season training with United. The young talents did not get enough play time under David Moyes’ regime at Manchester and were forced out for the other

alternatives. Last year, Henriquez spent the season on loan with Real Zaragoza and enjoyed a fruitful run of goalscoring form before injury wrecked the second half of his season. He scored four goals in his first four matches including his famous brace against Mallorca before he picked

an injury. Meanwhile, Varela was a regular in United’s Under-21s side that finished runners up in the Under-21s Barclays Premier League. This season, both should be coming back to United full of excitement because of Louis van Gaal, a man famous for giving youngsters a chance.

PICK of the day

France vs Germany

Colombia test awaits Brazil in quarter final Colombia face Brazil in one of the two quarterfinal matches of the World Cup tonight. The Colombians know their 100 per cent record so far will count for nothing against the hosts, who were frustrated by Mexico to a barren draw in the second group match. Brazil have been shaky in defence with their offense producing many chances, but none nearly as dangerous as they should be. Neymar has been selfish on the ball, Hulk too. Strikers, Fred and Joe are way off on their scoring form. Centre backs, David Luiz and Thiago Silva have been strong in the air and on the ground with full backs, Marcelo and Dany Alves constantly having to push up the field to aid the offense. Even so, the others around

them have to step up the game in order to discontinue winning on chance alone. Colombia’s golden boy, James Rodriguez has been sensational with five goals in his first four games. The 22-yearold has taken full responsibility on his shoulders to carry the team going forward. He, together with Juan Cuadrado and Jackson Martinez, can unlock the Brazilian defence time and time again. The defence is strong, but sometimes Juan Zuniga and Pablo Armero forget their duties to push up often to join the attack. Doing so against Brazil could prove dangerous as countering is one of their own specialties. If these guys, along with 38-year-old veteran, Mario Yepes, do not stay focused throughout the game, they will get beaten.

US may bid to host the 2026 WC The United States could bid to host the 2026 World Cup, according to Fifa bosses. The Americans were knocked out by Belgium on Tuesday. However, the level of support for Jurgen Klinsmann’s team has been remarkable, with US President, Barack Obama among those tweeting support. “There is a commitment to work with US Soccer,” said Fifa Secretary General, Jerome Valcke. Speaking to Brazil newspaper Globo, Valcke added: “What we see in the United States is staggering. The audience

is unprecedented, more than the NBA. “The country has the largest level of youth soccer in the world, with 20 million young people playing. “I think after 2022, they have an interest in hosting the 2026 World Cup.” US Soccer president and FIFA executive committee member, Sunil Gulati has previously said the United States could bid to host the 2026 tournament, but only if bidding rules change. The US have hosted the World Cup once, in 1994-the highest attended in history.

Tim HoWard: His heroic against Belgium have led to a new popularity for soccer in the US.

STAR MAN: French midfield man Paul Pogba has shown good form and France will look to him to spur the attack against old foes Germany.

France, Germany in duel of old foes France take on Germany in the first quarter-final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup at the historic Estadio Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Both teams are undefeated in the tournament so far. The powerhouses of European football have had a very similar journey to the quarter-finals. Germany emerged from the toughest groups this year thrashing Portugal 4-0 in the first match before a 2-2 draw with with Ghana in the second match and beat USA 1-0 in their last group game. They topped the group and earned a clash with Algeria in the knock-out round, where they need extra time to subdue the stubborn North Africans 2-1. France too won their Group E. They eased past Honduras 3-0 in the first game. Then drubbed Switzerland 5-2 and then drew 0-0 with Ecuador to book a place in the knock-out round against Nigeria. Like Germany, France needed extra time to get past Nigeria 2-0 and make their way into the quarters. Despite starting the tournament on a high, the German performance has gone down several notches as the tournament has progressed. Instead of hitting top gear, they have laboured their way past USA

and Algeria in their last two matches. Former German captains have criticised their performance. Thomas Muller has been the main source of goals for Germany in the tournament. Their midfield has generally been solid throughout the tournament and it remains their biggest strength. Mats Hummels remains a doubt for the game with injury. His replacement, Shkodran Mustafi, has been ruled out of the World Cup with an injury he picked up against Algeria. Bastian Schweinsteiger limped off in the same game. France do not have any injuries to worry about. Le Bleus have quietly gone about their business with no hype surrounding their young Paul Pogba, whose header helped France beat Nigeria has been impressive but striker Karim Benzema has looked out of sorts after his great showing in the first two group games. Didier Deschamps has ingrained a problem-solving ability in this team. France have shown a very important quality that big teams have – patience. They have slowly worn out teams and played their best football in the second half of the games.

Fans can’t wait for Mayweather, Maidana clash FRIday, juLy 4, 2014

eighteen-year legacy: Floyd Mayweather burst onto the scene with a medal-winning performance at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Within moments of casually telling a BET Awards hostess of his plans to meet Marcos Maidana in a rematch of their 12 rounds in May, which he won by closerthan-expected majority decision, Floyd Mayweather Jr had fans and observers already counting the days until September. “Sept 13 Back to business. Marcos Maidana/Floyd Mayweather, part two,” he said. And while it’s not been made official by a set of signed contracts or a formal press conference gathering, the mere implication by “Money” that

the fight will indeed occur has set the sport’s media contingent to critiquing the choice and how it’ll impact Mayweather’s ever-important legacy. The five-division champion turned 37 in February and has been a professional for 18 years since bursting onto the scene with a medal-winning performance at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He won his first world championship (at 130 pounds) eight days short of his two-year anniversary as a pro. He has subsequently added titles at four more weight increments, 135, 140, 147 and 154 pounds, while running his career record to 46-0 with 26 knockouts and earning long-term status as the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound

fighter from The Ring. The defeat of Maidana added the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight championship belt to the World Boxing Council (WBC) title that he carried into the ring. In Mayweather’s 20 fights that have gone the distance, only once -- against Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 -- did even one of three official ringside judges score in favor of an opponent.
