Our objective is to deliver excellent CPD, using knowledgeable, experienced professionals from within the XLVets community, alongside specialist external facilitators, to ensure a consistently high standard of training.
We aim to provide a range of clinical and non clinical CPD throughout the year, which will help improve the skills of all members of your practice team, with a particular focus on:
We offer graduate development programmes for each of the species groups - Equine, Farm and Small Animal. With a combination of clinical and non clinical content, they provide an excellent opportunity to not only expand core skills, but to provide a network of support for the attendees. We run three bespoke courses to meet the needs of leaders and prospective leaders at all stages of their careers. Alongside these interactive learning days we also provide the Mentoring Matters course, which is aimed at anyone working in practice who has an opportunity to positively impact the performance of others.
We offer a range of training opportunities to support your practice to build and maintain a positive culture, with courses such as Positive Appraisals, Mentoring Matters or Insights Discovery Workshop.
We can also provide support to help the team provide excellent customer service, with courses such as Successful Client Care in Practice and Difficult Conversations. There are also opportunities to develop training and coaching skills through Train the Trainer.

1 day
Gain the practical techniques and skills to be able to deal more effectively and confidently with difficult conversations, such as, bereavement, euthanasia or discussing client finances..
Programme Outline:
The day will be discussion-based, allowing delegates to explore specific issues or types of conversation that are most challenging to them.
• The Difficult Conversations we face: An opportunity to identify specific types of conversation that you find difficult as we open up the topic and ask: “What is a difficult conversation?”
• Understanding Yourself: Being aware of your own style, your intent and the approach you take to potential conflict is an essential ingredient to successfully managing difficult conversations. Identify your communication style and begin to consider how best to communicate with different styles to your own.
• Why things escalate: In this short section of the day we’ll look at why difficult conversations sometimes escalate and begin to discuss ways of preventing or managing that escalation.
• What are the skills that will enable you to manage difficult conversations more effectively? In this part of the day, you’ll have an opportunity to experiment with a set of skills that can transform difficult conversations.
• Boundaries: One of the most important skills when handling difficult conversations is the ability to recognise personal and professional boundaries. Knowing when and how to pull back from a conversation protects our own sanity and other people’s mental health.
• Bereavement and Change: Conversations with bereaved clients can be challenging. As the day begins to draw to its conclusion we will give specific time to those difficult conversations with people facing challenging forms of change and specifically bereavement.

The focus will then be put on the performance review meeting, including what you might do pre and post-review and the online resources: templates, information and best practice available. Before a short demonstration of coaching for high performance and an opportunity for each participant to coach and be coached on an area of their own performance at work. All attendees will leave with:

The programme is aimed at anyone working in practice who has an opportunity to positively impact the performance of others. Combining theory and ‘best’ practice, learning the whats, whys and hows of delivering mentoring successfully, including core coaching skills.
Programme Outline:
As with clinical development, mentoring requires a combination of theory and practice. If you have decided to mentor team members this course will provide you with skills and ongoing support in your new role.
• Understanding mentoring.
• Mentoring models: the ‘Model T’ and ‘The GROW Model’.
• Practicing mentoring skills.
• The art of listening.
• Practical tools to aid mentoring.
Introducing mentoring into your practice can be a key tool for recruitment and retention.
Investing in mentoring will not only help encourage applicants to apply for positions and promote supportive surroundings to new graduates, but it will also help to increase productivity, commitment, engagement and morale. Practices that have integrated mentoring schemes into their structure have found it an invaluable resource to attract the best quality candidates and keep key members of the team.

XLVets Graduate Development Programmes include exciting and innovative modules to help attendees achieve confidence in practice and build a strong and collaborative network from the first day of the programme and throughout their career.
The equine, farm and small animal programmes are designed and delivered primarily by XLVet members, for our members, alongside key industry experts. Each programme offers a series of core modules to provide support and confidence in key clinical and non-clinical skills, including well-being, resilience and communication.
Each programme will bring together a small number of graduates to share their experiences and develop future contacts. With the opportunity to receive support from an external mentor.

You can talk about anything with your mentors; from clinical skills to well-being, our mentors are all practising vets that understand just how it feels to start your career. Please note that your mentor will not replace the VetGDP Adviser within your practice, this is an opportunity to connect with a mentor outside of your practice.
Come together to learn, share experiences and have some fun. Each year we host all the graduates across species that have completed the programme, with those who are about to start. This is an excellent opportunity to attend CPD that is intertwined with activities and networking with your peers and fellow members of your XLVets community.

Programme Outline:
The programme consists of 2 facilitated learning days where you will explore the neuroscience behind leadership, understand the roles emotional and social intelligence play and consider the importance of selfawareness for leaders. Returning to practice with new ideas, and ways of thinking and being motivated and invigorated to put them into practice.
Self-aware leaders know the areas in which they are strong and those which need some work. Being honest about one’s strengths and shortcomings puts a leader in a position for improvement and growth. Grounded in adult learning theory and an opportunity to discuss leadership styles with your peers. The delivery style may be different to your previous learning experiences. It won’t be ‘chalk and talk’ and you won’t be overloaded with models and tools you’ll never use or recall in 6 months time. Instead, you will draw upon your existing knowledge and connect into this, reinforce this, build on this, layer this and develop this, meaning you return to the workplace motivated, invigorated and ready to try out new ideas and new thinking.
• To increase understanding of yourself and the way you lead.
• To increase understanding of your leadership style.
• Understanding the neuroscience behind leadership.

Based on four colours, Insights Discovery helps individuals and teams learn more about their preferred behaviours, the strengths they bring and the challenges they’re likely to face.
Programme Outline:
The success of any business is built on the performance of its people. Insights helps people to perform at their highest level by improving their understanding of themselves.
What is Insights Discovery? A simple and accessible four colour model that helps us to understand ourselves and others. Every person has all four colour energies within them; it is the combination of these energies which creates each unique personality. Our colour energies refer to a set of characteristics that tend to be our most preferred or our most natural way to be.
When an organisation helps its people reveal their individual combination of colour energies, they are better equipped to stay motivated and engaged whether working individually, in a team or as a leader.
Each person receives an Insights Discovery Personal Profile*. An extremely powerful tool, it can be used to resolve conflict, improve communication, and help teams see the value of each other’s contribution at work.
When you start your journey with Insights Discovery, you are investing in your people and giving them the tools to be able to work better together, forever.
*INSIGHTS Discovery profile is charged at £80 per profile.
Each team will receive a team wheel map, which will support the team to visualise and understand the spread of colour energies across the group.
This workshop can be completely bespoke to your practice needs:
• Never done Insights before? Start by understanding each individuals behaviour.
• Review how you can work best as a team.
• Explore specific areas, such as giving and receiving feedback effectively,
• Looking for a refresher? to review the teams profiles, or for other bespoke reasons!
