The New Hamilton Gallery is a community-focused project that aims to bring together tourists and residents within the Hamilton precinct and bring more arts and cultural event potential.

A set of walls are designed in response to the back of house condition, framing the primary hierarchy of the site while screening out the west buildings. The main gallery on the north is a new façade, and a series of secondary buildings to the west and east connects to the laneway entries. And the civic square performs as the intersection gathering space from all buildings and entries.

Paving patterns differentiate the main entry path from others.

The corridor not only reduces the volume but also soften the boundary of the gallery, allowing more participation for both residents and tourists.

The pavilion for aboriginal art exhibitions corresponds with the indigenous garden. The partition walls and the skillion roof structure shares a similar spatial quality with the main gallery.

Housing design under disability requirements is often considered regarding accessibility and inclusive environments, yet privacy is another important aspect that may be neglected. An adequate privacy boundary control in a house indicates not only separation but also interactions at the resident’s wish. This project explores how space arrangements can create different levels of privacy in each area for people with physical disabilities.

Irwin Altman elaborated privacy as “a dynamic process involving selective control over a self-boundary, whether by an individual or by a group.” This implies an active control of one’s space - territory. People

The territory is a physical environment where people stay in, and can be identified into 3 types: Primary, Secondary and Public, based on “people within the territory” and “duration of occupying the territory”.

Though intrusion is commonly considered when designing for privacy, interaction and isolation can sometimes be neglected. Especially for people who require physical support, it can also be dangerous and harmful if the space is overly secluded.

Home Community Neighbour Duration Permanent Primary Public Routine Temporary Secondary

Within each dwelling, the concept of territory still applies. Instead of simply separating public and private space by corridors, a transitional middle space is created as a secondary territory.

With the double door closed, the public area is, in a way, detached from the rest. Bedrooms at the back are at a higher level of privacy within the house all the time.

Floor materials differentiate the transition of spaces, performing as a visual cue in the house.

For residents living in the SIL housings, support workers wouldn’t regularly access their bedrooms, so the individual sunroom for SDA housings is now combined with the secondary space as a small semi-private lounge. It is the buffer between the living room and the bedrooms. When the lounge door is closed, the rest of the house is still capable of one other guest living in.
