In our daily life, people require water bottles to carry water when they are doing outdoor activities, travel and going for jobs. Application of single used water bottles can result in large amount of plastic waste. Thus, the development of reusable water bottle perfectly mitigates this issue, which is highly eco-friendly. In addition, only 38 countries on this planet have drinkable clean water. Luckily, Australia is one of them. (United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Australian likes to drink tap water. Analysis showed that approximately 70% of Canberra population use reusable bottle to drink tap water in the city. In addition, 64% of Canberra population always carry a water bottle. 73% of female population trends to carry a water bottle, while 56% of male population bring their water bottle (Newspoll research). Thus, water bottle is essentially required to carry cold water. In Australia, there are lots of outdoor public water bottle filling station, whenever you are walking, running, biking, or tennis. In addition, sunscreen should be always applied to people’s skin when people go outside. This design combines two outdoor most significant necessities into one.

On the one hand, “Sun Friend” is convenient, efficient and much easier for user to bring it during outdoor life than other products. Also, this design is a cross-communication, which shows an innovated design by combining between water and sunscreen into one subject. That is to say, this design reminds people to wear sunscreen for prevent the UV radiation when people drink water. This design intends to increase people’s awareness of skin cancer and remind people to protect themselves through a realistic way, which is people looking forward to. There is a hook on the “sunshine bottle”, which can be easily hooked on all kinds of places. Importantly, it is made by a UV colour reflecting the levels of UV radiation, further indicating that it increases people’s awareness of skin cancer by reminding people to protect themselves.

On the bottom section of sun cream, it is a scale bar showing the volume of remaining sun cream. In this case, user can easily detect the amount of sun cream in the bottom section.

Also, this bottom section support user to refill sun cream, which is an eco-friendly product.

Another reason why men subconsciously do not like apply sun cream is that application of sun cream is more like a symbol of feminization. This product extensively solves this issue through making men to think subconsciously that it is not a female-based product. This is product also highly suitable for children, which encourages children to have independence of sun protection habits from an early age. “Sun Friend” by linking itself to fashion, sports and sunshine, which promotes all kinds of user to bring it in a daily manner.

Design description Sun Friend has three models. All these three models contain two compartments, water section and sunscreen section, which has been descried in pervious part. Water section is made by steel. On the surface of the water section, three raised lines are attached to prevent slip and make the bottle easy to carry for outdoor activities.

The first model is called the “Twist cap”.

“Twist cap” model contain a hook-liked cap, which can be opened via twisting it. This lid is made by steel, showing that it is durable and people can easily to hold via the roundshaped hook. This model is suitable for people to use it in a daily-based manner.

The second model is called “One hand performance cap” Unlike the first model, the lip section in this model is made by plastic lip. This lip can be easily open by one hand via a tick and open fashion. The lid is connected with the top section of the bottle, without the needs to hold the lid when people drink water. The model is highly suitable for people doing sports, such as running. It can help people easily drink water and keep hydration via a suction nozzle.

Apart from the functional differences among these three models, I will then illustrate the common bottom sun cream section in detail. The bottom sun cream section is a refillable and no-touch sunscreen applicator with a UV-dependent colour changing surface. It is also an eco-friendly product. People can choose any SPF30-50 sunscreen lotion to put into the bottle. The capacity of this part is 35ml, which can carry sun cream for 3 - 5 days usage amount.( Schneider J, 2002) A solid plastic cosmetic ball will be designed on the sunscreen bottle. The solid roller ball is surrounded by a soft cosmetic sponge, which make the application of sunscreen easy for people in a no-touch manner. The roller-ball and sponge dispenses a consistent application of sunscreen, which provides a perfect way to apply sun cream during daily outdoor activities. Sunscreen bottle is a practical sun protection product to make the application of sunscreen easier for users.

Alternatively, the bottom compartment of sun cream can be dissociated and used as an independent section dependent on people’s need. This small and easy-carry section contains a hook, which can be easily hand on the bag or backpack.

The third model is called “One hand performance cap with filter” This model shows the same functional structure as the second model except one additional compartment inside the bottle. A water filter has been added into this model. The filter contains active carbon, which can purify the tap water. This design promotes people who are not comfortable to drink tap water to use our product to drink tap water.

How to use?

There is a ball controls the flow of the cream that is stored in the bottom section, whilst the sponge helps people to rub onto the skin. One can directly apply the ball onto the skin.

Through rolling the ball, sunscreen can be leaked out and evenly apply to the skin through soft sponge. The layer between drink bottle and sunscreen part can be opened through a screw fashion, and refill the sunscreen in the bottom section.

UV colour changed material

The UV colour changed material can change the colour when it exposed to sunlight, and it will turn back to the original colour in a few secondss when it be placed away from sunlight. For the part of sunscreen bottle, I use polyvinyl chloride-based plastic. As I have mentioned above, this bottle contains two types of caps. The first one is steel made cap, which is opened via twisting it off. The second one is made by plastic, which is linked to bottle. A suction nozzle is made by plastic. Filter

An optional compartment of a water filter can be added into the bottle. This filter is made

by BPA-free plastic, and in the middle section, it contains activated carbon. Activated carbon plays a role in absorbing a certain chemicals or debris in the water, and thus further purifies the tap water. Under this circumstance, application of water filter can promote people to use drink tap water.

A plastic rolling ball & Sponge

A plastic rolling ball for easy applying sunscreen, which will be designed on the sunscreen bottle. Sponge is cosmetic level, which requires to be changed every three months.

According to my target client is cancer council online shop, I developed a website that people can buy SunFriend through online shop. This website provides a platform to represent our products, including the important functions in preventing sunburn and the various categories of SunFriend. Apart from the representation of our product, this website contains educational-based knowledge about the UV & Sun protection, which in turn helps residents avoid skin cancer through the application of SunFriend. In addition, this website shows the condition of weather and UV index in a real time manner as well as the nearest tap water refill station showing by google map.

Future direction

Reducing UV exposure has been purposed as the most effective method in skin cancer prevention. I believe that this design will bring an innovative idea in field cancer prevention.

In the future, I will further investigate and modify my current version of Sun Friend to make more effective in skin cancer presentation. Also, I wish that scientific development can eliminate this disease soon.
