SITE ANALYSIS CONCRETE LAWN ACTION

HISTORY

PANORAMAS

Through the concrtete lawn site analysis done as a group, I learnt how the uses of the site change over a long period of time. Also, activities performed at the site are studied implying types of sturctures, such as seats, are required at site to coop with the need of students.

SPACIAL COMPOSITION

Plan 1:1

-Inspired by the Structure of the Double Helix of DNA. -Elements in both the structure of DNA and my model seem to be independent but they are acctually interacting with one another. -diagonal of every cube extends out to form one of the sides of the next cube.

SPACIAL COMPOSITION

Section 1:1 Image above showing section is form by cutting into the diagonal.

LANDFORMING -First precedent of this model is the Ground Zero at the World Trade Center. The double setdown of the ground giving a sense of infinity as the public will not be able to see the bottom of the sturcture. The same purpose is wished to be achieved by subtracting the ground.

-Image above is a monument in front of Basilica in Barcelona giving a idea of improtence and power of vertical element. -By extruding retangular shape from the horizon and tilting them creating a miniature of a hill. -There is a ramp at the site leading to the top of the landform. -Vertical trangular shape is to draw public’s attention to the subtraction of the ground.

LANDFORMING

Section 1:1 Section is cut through the subtration zone to reinforce the idea of infinity. The depth of the landform is also shown in the section.

ASSEMBLAGE

- Assemblage is the combination of the first two models by taking the simple cube element from the first model and the landform from the second model with increased in depth. -Model is inspired by the UFA Cinima Centre. The interesting irregular shape of the building is what I want to acchieve. -Even though simple cube shape is used as one of the major elements, by leaning the cube on the landform leaving only one piont resting under the ground, a irregular shape is created when looking on the ground as shown in the section.

ASSEMBLAGE

The section above showing the depth of landform as advice about increasing the depth was given to the previous landforming model.

-Using of different colors of foamboard is to create contrast. -Tiny transformed white cube attached to the black cube is the continuation and exaggeration of the idea in the SPACIAL COMPOSITION model that the diagonal of a cube forming an edge of another cube.

SPACIO-TEMPORAL NARRATIVE

Story behind the narrative is that a witch and a prince fall in love with each other. However, the rule in their world is that witch can only live in the black space while the prince can only live in the white. They break the rule by meeting in the shadow which is neither in the black space nor in the white.

SUPERIMPOSITION and COLLAGE -SUPERIMPOSITION is done by overlaying the site map of concrete lawn, the assemblage model and image of prince and witch. -Image of prince and witch is placed throwing out the question of how do they meet. -The idea of the final model is from extending the sides of the cube in the superimposition after three times of colaging.

FINAL PROJECT Slowing Down

-The final project uses the idea of disjuction. Elements scatter around the site. -By placing model in the clustered form, views of surrounding are block by stuctures from every direction. People cannot rush through concrete lawn as they always do. Instead, they have to walk around structures or walk through the walkway created in between stuctures.

plan 1:200

-Landforms are inspired by the Sichuan Memorial museum in China built after earthquike representing the sheared gound. Whereas the landform in the project Slowing Down is to create massive sitting space required to coop with large number of student gathering at concrete lawn during lunch period, which is learnt in the site analysis. -Precedent for the design of pavilion is the skeleton structure representing the branches shown on the left. The pavilion is left mostly open in order for the public to apperate the real beauty of nature than artificial branches. -Folding of pavilion is inspired by the designs of bus stop at Austria.

Different ways of placing elements were tried to best utilise the site and be most aesthetically appealing.
