XI CHAPTER ANNUAL REPORT

2022-2023
When the men returned to the house on 711 West Dickson Street, they were blown away by the updates made to the fraternity house. A fully renovated formal living room, a brand new EC room with a custom built Kappa Sigma conference table, new floors, a basketball court, and a fully functioning gym. Our humble home has never looked as nice as it does now. The prideful men of Xi have nothing but thanks to give to those who contributed to the effort, and we have shown the utmost respect to our new additions.
On the national level, Xi Chapter has taken the Kappa Sigma Recruitment Cup again, meaning we have pledged the most men of any Kappa Sigma chapter in the nation. With a fall pledge class of 85 and a spring pledge class of 35, Xi Chapter continues to grow both in quantity and quality. These young men have learned to live by our creed, the Star and Crescent, and to maintain our legacy of excellence. They all received two certificates of ritual proficiency, continuing to excel in all areas of fraternity life.
Leading this group of men is something I am always proud to do. I have learned from many great leaders and alumni that allow me to excel in my position. Xi is in good standing both with nationals and our university, continuing to build relationships that matter. For example, we were proud to welcome in our new chancellor, Charles Robinson, in April for dinner and a house tour. We are pushing to be one of the most achieved and decorated chapters of Kappa Sigma this year, with hopes of bringing home more hardware and certificates to our always growing trophy case.
The Fabulous Xi Chapter is the oldest, largest, and most decorated fraternity at the University of Arkansas. The bond of brotherhood and opportunity is unmatched by any other fraternity. There is no ceiling for Xi Chapter as we are always moving forward in the right direction. Even with all the eyes on us we perform again and again at the highest of standards. From the men old and new, making memories or reminiscing about old ones, being a member of the Xi Chapter is a privilege that not only lasts for a day, an hour, or a college term, but for life!

Here at the Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma, we strongly emphasize our recruitment program. Rush is the first step when it comes to remaining the best house on campus and a leading chapter nationally. Our rush process is unique, and we truly believe it is the best system to recruit high quality young men who will become leaders within Xi Chapter, on the University of Arkansas campus, and throughout the community.
Each year, more and more young men choose to attend the University of Arkansas and participate in fraternity recruitment. We try to separate potential members by region and assign one or more rush chairmen to each area to get to know the potential new members better and more personally. Our rush team includes:
• Five head rush chairs
• Six Arkansas regional rush chairs
• Two Texas rush chairs
• One out-of-state rush chair
Having such a strong rush team and system is how we put ourselves above other fraternities by being able to cover more ground and making sure that every young man is noticed.
This past year we had the privilege of recruiting, pledging, and initiating 117 outstanding young men. When meeting potential members, we take time to show them the campus, our house, and what it means to be a Kappa Sigma. We take great pride in our alums, our focus on academics, our involvement on campus and in our community, and our dominance as a fraternity at the University of Arkansas.
We would like to thank our alums for their unwavering support. Without them, Xi chapter’s recruitment would not operate as efficiently and powerfully as it currently does.
Throughout our time on the University of Arkansas campus, Kappa Sigma has generated many outstanding gentlemen. The structure of our pledging program encourages personal growth daily. From bid day to the day of initiation, our hope is that pledges experience growth in all aspects of their life. Pledgeship gives young men the opportunity to mature into adults, as well as responsible leaders on campus and in the community.
We strive to instill in pledges our fraternity’s creed, the Star and Crescent. The Star and Crescent represents our values as a fraternity; values such as humility, wisdom and honesty. It is what our fraternity was founded upon, and it truly reflects what it means to be a man of Kappa Sigma. Once our pledges decide to implement and live by the Star and Crescent, the transformation happens almost naturally.
Along with personal growth comes the building of relationships with others. I believe that to gain value within yourself, you must be willing to invest in others. Leading a program that pushes young men to construct everlasting relationships with one another is the most crucial factor in pledgeship. Pledging the Kappa Sigma Fraternity creates a bond between young men that cannot be described, only experienced.
Our pledge program is designed to instruct a group of young men what it means to become well rounded, responsible, and educated gentlemen of Kappa Sigma. It is a process that many men have gone through and have benefited. Having the responsibility of Head Pledge Educator and being able to lead a group of individuals to become men of Kappa Sigma is an experience that I will be forever be grateful.

This year, we continued to have a robust calendar of social functions, many of which are the largest on the University of Arkansas campus. In the fall semester, our social calendar is highlighted by Talledega Nights, which is a NASCAR themed event, and Southern Skies, a date event where we campout in rural Washington County, while listening to music from local band Ozark Riviera. In addition to those events, Xi Chapter of course holds a tailgate prior to every home football game. On the weekend the Razorbacks played Missouri State, we hosted our parents for Parent’s Weekend. We served lunch, gathered with family members, and of course celebrated a win by the Hogs! Finally, the annual trip to Dallas for the Arkansas vs. Texas A&M game in AT&T Stadium is a hugely popular weekend for our members, and we host a large tailgate for that game.
In the spring semester, everyone loves Fratty Shack, our golf themed party, and our spring formal, which was held this year in New Orleans. Needless to say, Xi Chapter thoroughly enjoyed all that Bourbon Street had to offer.
The pinnacle to our social calendar, of course, is Row Week at the beginning of April. This year we had date night on Thursday with Five Inch Collective, then a music festival concert on Friday evening. This year, the concert was headlined by Juicy J, and we were also entertained by Duke Duece, and Famous Dexter. Finally, on Saturday, we host a massive crawfish boil, which is the envy of every other fraternity. This year, two of our alumni (and dads to two of our actives), Shawn Fidler and Bryan Bone, served our members and their guests over 800 pounds of crawfish.
As you can imagine, it takes months to organize and plan these large events months in advance with our executive committee, alumni, the University of Arkansas Interfraternity Council, and the City of Fayetteville. All of this requires seamless communication between each level of the fraternity. Although as the social chairman, I coordinate the planning of these functions, it takes cooperation and work from several members of Xi Chapter. It is our responsibility to create not only large enjoyable functions but establish guidelines and policies to ensure the safety of our members and guests.
CALVIN WILLIAMS Social Chairman Dallas, TXWe are constantly trying to improve our focus on philanthropy, and the 2022-2023 academic year was no different. This year’s philanthropic events included our first annual Kappa Sigma Xi’s Got Talent in September 2022. This is a talent show organized by the chapter, and it features the many talents of our Fall 2022 pledge class. Held in our own backyard, we had Tyler Childers lip syncing, one pledge who played Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Freebird on guitar, a hilarious Backstreet Boys acapella group, and even a Napoleon Dynamite impersonator! We sold over 500 tickets to the Xi’s Got Talent event, and all funds benefitted Kappa Sigma’s national philanthropic cause, the Military Heroes Campaign. The Military Heroes Campaign is a national fundraising campaign committed to supporting ongoing care for military veterans and their families, by providing funding to numerous organizations such as the SEAL Legacy Foundation, Homes for Our Troops, and the Warriors and Quiet Waters Foundation.
In December, we took part in our first Arkansas Children’s Hospital Toy Drive. We received hundreds of toy donations, which allowed us to give a merrier Christmas to those in need. The men of Kappa Sigma were proud to participate in the American Red Cross Blood Drive this spring.
This coming fall, we are resuming our Military Heroes Pickleball Tournament. Our philanthropy committee is looking forward to putting on our pickleball tournament in the midst of the growing popularity of the sport. The men of Xi Chapter are eager to give back to the community in many different ways over the next year.
This academic year, Xi Chapter has had some great intramural teams and games. Intramurals is an excellent source for exercise and spending time with friends. It also serves as a great opportunity for fraternity members to showcase their athletic abilities, build camaraderie within their organization, and compete against other fraternities. Intramurals can also serve as a way for fraternities to engage with the wider campus community and build relationships with other organizations. This year we have had some great teams.
BASKETBALL Andrew Wilder, Max Cowgill, Brandon Bisceglia, Spencer Knight, Aden Coca, Carter Hanan, Jacob Timmerman, Matthew Nagelson, Calvin Williams
SOFTBALL Andrew Wilder, Max Cowgill, Brandon Bisceglia, Spencer Knight, Aden Coca, Carter Hanan, Matthew Nagelson, Calvin Williams, Tanner Petty
FOOTBALL Andrew Wilder, Max Cowgill, Brandon Bisceglia, Spencer Knight, Aden Coca, Carter Hanan, Matthew Nagelson, Calvin Williams, Jaxon Cartwright
By participating in intramurals, Kappa Sigma can demonstrate their commitment to teamwork, sportsmanship, and community involvement. Overall, Kappa Sigma intramurals are an important part of the fraternity’s culture and provide members with an opportunity to stay active, build relationships, and have fun.
JAXON CARTWRIGHT Intramurals Chair Texarkana, TX ANTHONYAt Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma, an emphasis has been put on the academic success and standing of our members. In order to help meet the academic needs of our members, Xi Chapter has continued a partnership with Do College Better, a local tutoring and collegiate advising company. Through Do College Better, we are able to offer each member unlimited group tutoring in every subject offered at the University of Arkansas to ensure their success. Furthermore, Xi Chapter should be commended for being the only Greek organization on campus which gives each member access to Do College Better individual sessions at no extra cost. This partnership has led to a recent rise of the academic ranking of Xi Chapter among other fraternities as well as ensuring the Xi Chapter cumulative grade point average is above the all Greek men’s average. With the help from the Xi Educational Foundation, each member has the tools necessary to excel in their academic endeavors needed to reach their full potential.
Entering into college, new members can undergo a difficult challenge in transitioning from high school to collegiate level academics. Through the cohesion of the Xi Academic Committee and Do College Better, potential new members in the pledgeship program are given every opportunity to succeed academically. Do College Better proctors a study hall for new members, and academic reports of new members are done weekly. These academic reports are then utilized by the Academic Committee to help new members move past their struggles along with a follow up by Do College Better in order to correct the problem at hand and ensure academic success for every new member. This system has proven incredibly effective as the Fall of 2022 pledge class achieved one of the top five highest ever pledge class grade point averages, and had 15 pledges with a 4.0 grade point average.
The Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma understands that life in college brings many challenges ranging from academics, social life, and engineering, the qualities needed to enter the professional world. Through the help of Do College Better, and the Xi Educational Foundation, Xi Chapter has made meeting academic standards less stressful and easier to achieve. While college can be incredibly fun, the end goal has always been to achieve a diploma. Scholarship is an essential pillar to Kappa Sigma that all brothers take seriously in diligently applying themselves to their studies. Thus, Xi Chapter has given each member the tools necessary to succeed and eventually become leaders in communities across the nation in the near future.
Every other summer, the Kappa Sigma national fraternity holds its Biennial Grand Conclave, known as Kappa Sigma’s Finest Hour. Each chapter is represented by one delegate who votes on matters on behalf of their chapter, plus several additional members who attend seminars, events and other brotherhood related events. The 2021 Grand Conclave was held in Nashville, Tennessee. Xi Chapter sent Jeb Joyce, Malcolm McNair and a large contingent of undergraduates. At the biennial event, Xi Chapter was proud to receive the Recruitment Cup, a traveling trophy awarded to the chapter with the most pledges in an academic year, and an award for the largest chapter in the country in active members. Xi Chapter also was awarded The Founders’ Award of Chapter Excellence (FACE) which is the benchmark award in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, recognizing outstanding Chapter management, achievement, and program development in all areas of operation.
Our chapter has been tirelessly working to improve our knowledge of the Kappa Sigma ritual. Our efforts were noticed, and for the first time in Xi Chapter history, every single member of Xi Chapter holds two ritual proficiency certificates. In addition, Caleb Parker of Carlisle, Arkansas, the former Xi Chapter Grand Master of Ceremonies, was named a Master of the Ritual, which means he has committed all of our fraternity’s secrets to memory. In all, we were able to celebrate several great accomplishments for Xi Chapter at the 2021 Conclave.

We are finally back to what feels like normal after the last couple of years. From rush, tailgates, ball games, and functions, things are better than ever around Xi Chapter. Last spring I had the pleasure of being a part of the 2018 class from start to finish. It was amazing and bittersweet. Witnessing so many milestones and accomplishments from such a wonderful group of young men truly makes me smile. I will hold all of them near and dear to my heart and cannot wait to see where they will be in the next ten years!
I have adopted a rescue dog named Willie, who absolutely loves the boys and loves to run the halls to go visit. I have also gone back to work full time as an Assistant General Manager of Crunch Fitness here in Fayetteville. So while I am not here during the day all of the time, I still am here every night and weekend. This was an adjustment for everyone, me not being here all of the time, but this gave me the balance that I had missed since COVID-19, and will allow me to do this job for the years to come.
The hundreds of boys that are a part of this chapter are what I consider the best of the best. I feel just as lucky to be a part of the best fraternity house on campus. Sophomore year is always the best year for everyone, since they get to experience their one year of living in the fraternity house, and I get to experience getting to know them better. It has been a pleasure each year to get to live with so many wonderful boys, and I look forward to getting to know many more in the years to come!
