CONCEPT STATEMENT

POLYGON & DECONSTRUCTION In elementary geometry, a polygon is "a plane figure that is bounded by a finite chain of straight line segments closing in a loop to form a closed chain or circuit." A triangle is a example of a polygon. Other polygons can be formed by a series of triangles. A triangle is the most stable shape in the world. It is often used in structures. This design uses polygons to form a learning environment for NEXT University, and give students more flexibility in their environment. Deconstructivism is a way to reveal functions by breaking traditional models of thinking. It reforms and reconstructs the new functions, meanings, and structures by separating different parts of the original structure and analyzing them. This process breaks traditional habits or modes of creating, accepting, thinking, and teaches us to form a new system based on the users’ needs. My mission is to create an environment that revises the traditional learning methods by making a learning space that belongs to students, and makes it easy to learn and collaborate, while providing a healthy interior environment for users. Also, this university needs to follow the trend of sustainability. This project combines these two elements together to form a unique study environment for users.

I set the activity learning classroom, reception area, facility hub and students working cafe working together to works as the first impression for the visitors. The setting of the classroom is not working as the traditional teach–and– get form. Instead, the classrooms are more easy to let the students and instructors interact with each other. In the design, based on the concepts of polygon and deconstruction, this elevation’s wall pattern shows different polygons, and these shapes work as a kind of way finding to guide the users to different interior spaces. The white board is serves all users. They can write and draw their good ideas on it, or they can post event posters on it.

THE HUB The facility hub is one of the most important parts in this design. It is a place which will attract visitor’s eyes, and give people a first impression. When you go into the building of NEXT University, to the first thing you will see is the facility hub. It is a free space for students to work and rest, or to receive visitors here. When you enter, there is a focal point on the left side. It is a reception desk. The design of the reception desk is based on the concepts of polygon and deconstruction. It connects with the ceiling and becomes part of the ceiling.

STUDENT WORK CAFE This is a perspective view of the student work cafe. The cafe is linked with the facility hub by the bar which has a connection to the plant box. The gray triangle shape on the floor shows the concept. It works as a way−finding tool. The wood ceiling pattern also works as a way finding tool.

CLIENT REQUEST "Design Milk a mostly a virtual team. Therefore, communication via phone, email, and video chat is very important. Screen sharing, social sharing and other online forms of communication are also important, both between the team and with readers. The team requires a lot of cross–media communication, so the social media team needs to know what the editorial team is doing and the editorial and social team need to know what advertising team is doing and so on. All departments are constantly collaborating and working on multiple projects at once, so there’s a lot going on. Additionally, editors working on Tech stories often cross over into Home or Style categories etc. There aren’t really any silos in company." (From the client's design brief) Design Milk places value on making sure that everyone can work the way he or she wants to in order to accomplish tasks. Design Milk needs a space that is flexible, and accommodates all kinds of work styles, with open space and private areas. Schedules are also flexible, so it’s important for them to accommodate downtime and other activities in the space without interfering with the work.

CONCEPT PHILOSOPHY

MERGE & SPLASH

In this design, the mission is to create a mixed–use space which will support a pop–up store, a show room, and an office for people who work at Design Milk and their clients. This spaces use merge as its concept. Merge is a motion. This activity describes when two or more things combine or join together and become united as one thing. For this project, there are many functions required for the space, so I would like to merge some of them together. Some of the functions will merge together to form a new function. Design Milk wants to let their staff work in the kind of environment that meets their personal needs. So I will provide different kinds of work spaces and merge them together. These work space will be accessible, flexible and convenient working space for staff. This design provides a convenient pop–up store for customers to purchase different products. It will merge a showroom and a pop–up store together.

This is the elevation of pop–up store and reception area. These two function areas are combined by two milk carton shapes. The pop–up store is selling art collections, deco collections, magazines and other products. There is a reception area inside of the milk carton shape room. This area uses acoustic material for absorbing the noise. The purpose is to provide a more secure, quiet, and convenient space for communication and collaboration.

Based on concept of merge and the milk carton in the Design Milk’s logo, this design merged two milk cartons together. One is used for pop–up store and another one is used for the reception area.

When it is pushed down into the tatami, it will become a part of the floor. Putting the wood panel back, in this way will create a smooth floor surface. If the client wants to hold a party or invite friends to visit, this can make the space flexible in use. The client can access to the balcony by going out of the black framed sliding door.

POSTER DESIGN

THE MUSEUM OF TOLERANCE This is one of my projects from my graphic design class Make Ideas Visible. The mission of this project is to design a event poster for The Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. I chose to exhibit Chinese culture and Japanese culture to show and encourage the tolerance between two Asian countries with shared cultures but a complicated history.

DIALOGS My concept is "dialog" for this project. I use dialog boxes to show the poster's subheadings as an online dialogue between two people.

CONCEPT BOOK MERGE "Merge" is the concept of this book. When preparing materials for this book, I started by making a collage book based on my concept. After I finished the collage, my instructor and I picked out these works, and I edited and organized them together into this book. In order, they are cover, introduction spread, and spread 1 to 7. Also, I binded this concept book by myself.
