世界文化瑰寶,夏荊山的藝術遺產

代宗師夏荊山承載著深厚的文化價值與歷史意義, 自基金會成立以來,積累近十年的努力深耕,在 2022 年迸發不同凡響的力量,以神聖的佛畫藝術撼動人 心,基金會豐碩成果展現夏荊山大師的藝術特殊貢獻。

2010 年北京故宮博物院收藏夏荊山大師之〈自在觀音菩 薩像〉,被當時院長鄭欣淼盛譽是中國的「未來文物」; 2022 年夏荊山也被亞洲大學現代美術館館長潘襎博士譽 為與張大千、溥心畬,同為當代佛教藝術界中唯三,足 能等量齊觀、睥睨全球的大師。

聞名全世界的佛教組織佛光山與慈濟,陸續與基金會展開 密切的藝文交流與合作。自 2020 年起開啟海內外邀請展, 2023 年 2 月至 6 月展出於佛光山巴黎法華禪寺為海外首 站,以及下半年將在佛光山基隆極樂寺宗門館展出;2022 年與慈濟結緣,基金會為首度受邀於花蓮靜思堂舉辦夏荊 山大師佛畫展,並在 2023 年 2 月至 4 月規劃巡迴展至新 店、高雄靜思堂。希望以夏荊山殿堂級佛畫藝術瑰寶的攝 受力,跨越宗教藩籬,打造東方佛畫經典藝術饗宴。

受到全球藝文界的關注與重視, 2022 年 8 月夏荊山大 師受邀於臺南市美術館展覽, 2023 年上半年規劃至 臺北市立美術館展出,期以建構臺灣佛教繪畫藝術史 之重要學脈,奠定夏大師之當代佛教藝術史地位。自 2020 年至今,因全球疫情嚴峻,希望透過佛畫美學來 撫慰人心,祈願世界災病平息,同步推出線上展覽形 式,與 ENCATC Congress 、 Smithsonian American Art Museum 、美國丹佛大學和大英圖書館等基金會之國際 友好文化組織共同推廣。

9 月 23 日適逢夏荊山大師百歲冥誕,鳳凰衛視節目「文 化大觀園」特別錄製《夏荊山的佛教藝術世界》,以緬 懷紀念夏荊山大師,實地搭景於北京荊山書畫院,同步 連線臺北,雙方深入對談夏大師一生的菁華和秘辛;與 靖天媒體共同製作節目《荊山國寶》第一季,在全球網 絡發酵,與社群媒體的活躍,持續帶動展覽熱度,讓夏 荊山大師佛畫藝術受眾群擴大影響各層面。

基金會堅持走出同溫層,受官方邀請,我以「以佛像繪 畫藝術傳遞真善美的力量」為專題,參與全球善經濟創 新模式發現之旅暨杭州影響力投資大會,主旨以藝術為 社會發揮正能量;積極連結優質企業資源共同為文化大 業努力,衍生「夏荊山經典藝術全球 CSR 暨慈善共好計 畫」,打造文化創意產業與金融業實踐企業社會責任之 互利共好合作模式,內容涵蓋全球藝術視野與專業藝術 鑑賞知識,落實善循環促進永續發展,備受各界肯定推 崇;更在 2022 年基金會與倫敦蘇富比藝術學院合作「蘇 富比 x 夏荊山東方藝術計畫」,創辦首屆菁英會員,催 生「臺灣蘇富比藝術協會」。

這幾年受到各界廣大的支持,基金會由衷感謝,尤其在 疫情共處的時代,更突顯出佛畫藝術帶給世人難能可貴 的人文底蘊。未來也將以發展夏學為要,聚焦在全球藝 文各項活動的推展,齊心推廣夏荊山大師畢生致力儒佛 文化傳承之職志。

The World’s Cultural Treasure, Xia Jing Shan’s Art Legacy

Profound cultural value and historical significance are embodied by the achievement of Master Xia Jing Shan, and the hard work has transpired into an energy of extraordinary caliber in 2022, with Master Xia’s distinguished artistic contribution richly presented by the foundation. Master Xia’s painting, Avalokiteśvara, collected by the Palace Museum in Beijing in 2010 was praised by the then director Zheng Xin-miao as a “artifacts of the future ” of China. In 2022, Asia University Museum of Modern Art director, Dr. Pan Fan, also stated that the irreplaceable contemporary Buddhist art trinity comprised of Xia Jing Shan, Zhang Daqian, and Pu Xinyu put the accomplishments of these masters on equal footing with other international greats.

Fo Guang Shan and Tzu Chi, two world renowned Buddhist organizations, have also continued to work closely with our foundation to engage in arts and cultural collaborations. Invitational exhibitions have been initiated in Taiwan and overseas since 2020, with the first international exhibition to be held from February to June of 2023 at the Monastere Fo Guang Shan France, followed by an exhibition in the second half of the year at the Fo Guang Shan Ji Le Temple in Keelung. With Connections formed with Tzu Chi in 2022, our foundation was invited for the first time to present an exhibition of Master Xia’s Buddhist art at Tzu Chi’s Jing Si Hall in Hualien, with plans to also show at the Jing Si Hall in Xindian and Kaohsiung. The objective is for Master Xia’s world-class influential Buddhist art to transcend beyond the boundaries of religion and to create iconic art events that celebrate the Buddhist iconography of the East.

With attention and recognition garnered from arts communities around the world, Master Xia’s art was presented at the Tainan Art Museum in August 2022, and with further plans to exhibit at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in the first half of 2023. With hopes for Buddhist art to bring comfort to people and to pray for peace around the world, we have also launched online exhibitions, collaborating with the ENCATC Congress, Smithsonian American Art Museum, the University of Denver, the British Library, and other foundations and international cultural organizations.

September 23rd marked the posthumous centenary of Master Xia, and a special feature was produced by Phoenix TV for its program, Cultural Canvas. Entitled The Buddhist Art World of Xia Jing Shan, the special program paid homage to the master and was shot on location at the Jingshan College of Art in Beijing, and connecting simultaneously to Taipei, an indepth dialogue between the two sides was held to discuss the life of Master Xia in great details. Moreover, Golden TV also produced the first season of the program, Jing Shan, National Treasure, which was shared globally on the internet. Besides, our foundation presented the featured topic, “Conveying the Power of Truth, Benevolence, and Beauty through Buddhist Art”, at the Discovery of Innovative Formats for the Economy of Goodness and Impact Investing Conference in Hangzhou, and our objective was to cast positive energy in society through art. Furthermore, the assertive connections made with outstanding corporations and resources to collectively contribute to a greater cultural cause have led to the forming of “Xia Jing Shan Art Global CSR and Philanthropic Project of Mutual Benefits”, with a mutually beneficial collaboration platform created for the cultural and creative industries to fulfill their corporate social responsibilities. The project covers knowledge on professional art appreciation and assessment, with tangible actions taken to realize the circulation of benevolence. In 2022, our foundation also collaborated with the Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London in launching “XJS & Sotheby’s Institute of Art Oriental Art Premier Course”, and the program’s inaugural elite members have also initiated the founding of Sotheby’s Art Association Taiwan.

We are immensely grateful for the great support we’ve received throughout the past years, and especially in the time of a pandemic, the invaluable humanistic and cultural energy that Buddhist art can bring to people has become more prominent. Our foundation is determined to keep advocating Master Xia’s philosophy in the future, working together to preserve and pass down Master Xia Jing Shan’s lifelong devotion to Confucianism and Buddhism.

封面故事

虛空藏是大乘佛教的八大菩薩摩訶薩之一。「虛空」表示廣大無限, 「藏」表示無限福德與智慧,虛空藏菩薩以濟度眾生為樂,其智 慧廣大如虛空,其財富遍滿三界,能滿足人們祈求福德、智慧、財富、 美名、佳偶之心願。

造像以精細的工筆線條與重彩設色相輔相成,藉由祥龍豐富的肢體變化 堆疊出麟片層次;夏荊山特以鉛白洗出薄透如絲的紗質衣飾及後方的光 背,飄渺的雲朵以明暗暈染增添律動,搭配厚實琉璃藍設色的背景,有 如暗黑中曖曖內含光,襯托出虛空藏菩薩超然典雅的尊貴形象。

Ākāśagarbha is regarded as one of the eight major Bodhisattvas in Chinese Buddhism. His name can be translated as "boundless space treasury" or "void store" as his wisdom is said to be boundless as space itself. Ākāśagarbha is said to meet people's wishes for blessings and bring about an increase of benefits such as wisdom, wealth, and fame.

In terms of creating the image, fine meticulous strokes with heavy chroma and hue complement each other, and through the dragon’s rich body language, the scales are layered and stacked. Xia Jing Shan especially uses white lead to wash out the filmlike, muslin material of Ākāśagarbha’s clothing and the backlighting, while the ethereal clouds use light and dark smudges to add rhythm. Combined with a thick solid indigo background, this brings out the honorable and respectable image of Ākāśagarbha’s superlative elegance.

「萬法心生:夏荊山藝術經典展」於 2022

年 8 月 6 日在臺南市美術館 1 館舉行 開幕式,出席重要主賓有臺南市長黃偉哲、臺南市 美術館董事長蘇憲法、臺南市美術館館長林育淳、 財團法人夏荊山文化藝術基金會執行長趙忠傑博 士和臺南市立法委員王定宇,開幕式貴賓冠蓋雲 集,上百人共襄盛舉;另臺南市政府與財團法人夏 荊山文化藝術基金會 ( 以下簡稱基金會 ) 為建立長 期合作藝文推廣,當天雙方簽署藝文交流合作備忘 錄,以利未來藝文研究與資源共享。

The “All The Dharmas Emanate from Within : Xia Jing Shan Art Exhibition” held its opening ceremony at Building 1 of Tainan Art Museum on August 6, 2022. Tainan City Mayor WeiChe Huang, Tainan Art Museum CEO Hsien-Fa Su, Tainan Art Museum president Yu-Chun Lin, Xia Jing Shan Arts and Culture Foundation (hereinafter referred to as the Foundation) CEO Dr. Chung-Chieh Chao, and the Legislator, Ting-Yu Wang were among the over one hundred guests attending the event. At the ceremony, the Tainan City Government and the Foundation also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish long-term cooperation for art and culture promotion, and this will facilitate art and culture research as well as resource sharing in the future.

典禮上,主辦單位基金會執行長趙忠 傑博士,展開夏荊山之晚年代表大作 〈雲起龍尊聖觀音〉,以佛畫撫慰人心; 承辦單位林生文化藝術股份有限公司 (以下簡稱林生文化)董事長魏孝秦代 表致贈夏荊山觀音文創藝術予臺南市 政府及協辦單位臺南市美術館(以下簡 稱南美館)。

展覽由基金會執行長趙忠傑博士、倫敦 蘇富比藝術學院亞洲現代與當代藝術總 監何凱特博士、美國大都會藝術博物館 教育研究員娜嘉‧漢森共同策展,以 「萬法心生」為題,集結夏荊山佛畫 各系列經典名作95件,透過「入世紅 塵」、「超凡境界」兩大子題,表達夏 荊山畢生修為理念與對佛畫創作勤勉不 輟的精神,聚焦「修心」的重要,展現 夏荊山繪畫的平易近人與獨特細膩之夏 學風格。

At the ceremony, the Foundation CEO, Dr. Chung-Chieh Chao, as the organizer of the event, reveal The Dragon King Worships Avalokiteśvara , one of Master Xia’s masterpieces that is representative of his twilight years’ works, which is a painting that comforts the soul of the audience, while Lissome Arts and Culture Co. Ltd (Hereinafter referred to as Lissome Culture) CEO Mr. Xiao-Chin Wei, coordinator of the event, presented a Xia Jing Shan Avalokiteśvara to the Tainan City Government and co-organizer Tainan Art Museum.

The exhibition “All The Dharmas Emanate from Within”, was jointly curated by the Foundation CEO Dr. Chung-Chieh Chao, Dr. Katie Hill, director of the Office of Contemporary Chinese Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London, and Nadja Hansen, a museum educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the U.S. Through the theme indicated in the title, 95 seminal and renowned works across the various Buddhist painting series by Xia Jing Shan were brought together and put on display under the two major sub-headings of “The Secular World” and “The Transcendent Realm”, which express Xia Jing Shan’s philosophy towards practicing Buddhism and his spirit of diligence when it came to creating Buddhist paintings. By focusing on the importance of cultivating one’s spirit, it demonstrates how approachable Xia Jing Shan’s paintings are, and the uniquely meticulous style in the Xia philosophy.

臺南市長黃偉哲表示,夏荊山作品兼具 宗教、藝術、人文饗宴,沉浸於夏荊山 筆下藝術之美,讓人宛如置身於故宮氛 圍。本次展品為夏荊山畢生最顛峰之作 齊聚南美館,造福在地市民朋友們可以 近距離觀賞大作,是最殊勝的機會。

立法委員王定宇提到夏荊山作品工法精 細,尤其是鍾馗系列色彩融合東西方藝 術內涵。本次展覽本身不只是藝術信仰 境界上面的喜好,讓普羅大眾以及任何 心中有所求的人,帶來豐盛的精神糧食。

南美館董事長蘇憲法秉持在地化邁向國 際化的方針,以臺南人文薈萃的豐厚歷 史為底蘊,研究、梳理、展示臺灣近現 代與當代藝術。這次夏荊山藝術經典展 讓佛像精氣神淨化人心,帶給觀眾更多 當代藝術多樣觀點與視角。

Tainan City Mayor Wei-Che Huang indicated that Xia Jing Shan’s works are fests that incorporate religion, art, and the humanities, and being immersed in the beauty drawn by Master Xia’s brushes is as if one is in the National Palace Museum. The exhibition at Tainan Art Museum brought together the pieces that represented the pinnacle of Xia Jing Shan’s work in his life, and is a most wonderful opportunity for people in the city to view these masterpieces up close.

The Legislator, Ting-Yu Wang mentioned the fine workmanship Xia Jing Shan’s works displayed, particularly the Zhong Kui series where the colors fuse the artistic connotation of the East and West. The exhibition itself is not just a preference in the realms of art and beliefs, but it brings abundant soul food to the general public and anyone who may be seeking something in their hearts.

The Chairman of Tainan Art Museum, Hsien-Fa Su , has been adhering to the policy of moving from localization towards internationalization, and based on Tainan’s rich history in culture and humanities, Taiwan's modern and contemporary art are being researched, organized and displayed to the public. This Xia Jing Shan art and classic works exhibition allows the souls and spirits of the Buddhist figures to purify people’s hearts, and brings more diverse views and perspectives on contemporary art to the audience.

The works include Buddha, Bodhisattva, Avalokiteśvara, Dharma Protector, Bodhidharma, Arhat and Zhong Kui, etc., fully presenting the artistic context of Xia Jing Shan's Buddhist paintings.

策展人趙忠傑博士談到展場最大亮點為首 次在臺展出〈藥師琉璃光如來〉、〈千手 千眼觀世音菩薩〉、〈地藏十皇〉三件巨 幅名畫,最高長達十幾公尺。巨幅名畫系 列是在夏荊山於耄耋之齡所創作,一生累 積百幅作品,令人嘆為觀止。其佛畫透過 豐富的象徵意義,來體現中華文化的傳承 以及宗教的寬容與莊嚴,同時也受到國際 級藝術博物館的推崇與典藏。

開幕式會後也邀請到世界宗教博物館榮譽 館長暨前臺南市美術館董事陳國寧教授藝 術導覽,除梳理夏荊山繪畫風格,並特別 賞析〈千手千眼觀世音菩薩〉,現場交流 熱絡。

為期一個月的展出,受到熱烈迴響。除了 讓更多喜愛佛教藝術的朋友們更認識夏荊 山的佛教世界,基金會也透過與臺南在地 大學產學合作,提供展場實務經驗的實習, 深化專業知識應用,拓展學生國際視野。

As one of the curators, Dr. Chung-Chieh Chao said the biggest highlight for the exhibition is the three giant paintings: Bhaiṣajyaguru, Thousand-armed and thousand-eyed Avalokiteśvara, and Ksitigarbha with the Ten Kings of Hell which are all on display in Taiwan for the first time, the largest of which spans a dozen or so meters. The giant painting series was Xia Jing Shan’s creation during his venerable years, and it is impressive when one considers the hundreds of pieces he created throughout his life. His Buddhist paintings embody the inheritance of Chinese culture. Due to this, these paintings have received high praise from international museums which also seek to collect these works.

After the opening ceremony, Professor Guo-Ning Chen (Honorary President of the Museum of World Religions and former board member of the Tainan Art Museum) was invited to provide a guided tour where she did an in-depth dialogue on the piece Thousand-armed and thousand-eyed Avalokiteśvara, which led to lively exchanges at the event.

The month-long exhibition received enthusiastic responses. In addition to letting those who love Buddhist art know more about Xia Jing Shan’s Buddhist world, the Foundation also provided students with practical experiences at the exhibition through its industry-university collaboration with local universities, which also allowed students to enhance practical knowledge through experiences and broaden their horizon.

Chairman of the Asian Culture and Business Development Association, Ms. Yuan-Chin Kuo, led the members to participate in the lecture "Eric Wu X Chung-Chieh Chao: the Heart Sutra aesthetics of Buddhist painting Master Xia Jing Shan". Nearly a hundred people participated. The scene was wonderful, grand, and the exchanges were lively.

展期間策畫三場藝術沙龍,第一場開幕當天邀請到美國大都會藝術博物館教育研 究員娜嘉‧漢森與基金會執行長趙忠傑博士對談,主題為「從大都會藝術博物 館視角,賞析『萬法心生』策展理念與意涵」,從東西方藝術角度切入,深入分 析夏荊山繪畫的特色,激盪出精彩火花。

Three art salons were organized during the exhibition. The first was held on the day of the opening ceremony, where Nadja Hansen, a museum educator from the U.S. Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with the Foundation CEO Dr. Chao, talked under the title “Appreciating and analysing the curation ideals and connotations for ‘All The Dharmas Emanate from Within’ from the perspective of the Metropolitan Museum of Art”, where they provided an in-depth analysis of the features of Xia Jing Shan’s paintings, and stirred up much excitement and contemplation over these artworks.

第二場「吳若權X趙忠傑:佛畫大師夏荊山的心經美學」舉辦於2022年8月 20日南美館二館跨域展演廳,邀請到臺灣專欄作家吳若權,聚焦夏荊山大師名 作〈心經觀音〉,從佛學經典延伸探討夏荊山佛畫所呈現的藝術美學與蘊藏深 厚的佛法修持。

The second art salon, “Eric Wu X Chung-Chieh Chao: the Heart Sutra aesthetics of Buddhist painting Master Xia Jing Shan” was held on August 20 at Tainan Art Museum, where Taiwanese columnist and author Eric Wu was invited to speak, and they focused on Master Xia’s famous work (Heart Sutra) Avalokiteśvara, going from Buddhist classics to further explore the artistic aesthetics.

第三場「倫敦蘇富比藝術學院—夏荊山佛像藝術鑑賞」舉辦於2022年9月11日 展覽閉幕日,邀請國際策展人—倫敦蘇富比藝術學院亞洲現代與當代藝術總監何 凱特博士。闡述「萬法心生:夏荊山藝術經典展」策展緣起,著重當代佛畫藝術 巨擘夏荊山之獨特價值,藉由藝術實踐自證自悟,與眾生共鳴其隱含於畫中的真 善美精神,引導我們在生活中聆聽自己的心,並開啟反思與對話。

The third event, “Sotheby’s Institute of Art London – an artistic appreciation and evaluation of Xia Jing Shan’s Buddhist figures” was held on September 11, the closing day of the exhibition. The exhibition’s international curator, Dr. Katie Hill, Director of the Office of Contemporary Chinese Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London, was invited to describe how the curation for “All The Dharmas Emanate from Within:Xia Jing Shan Art Exhibition” came about, where focus was placed on the unique value of the Xia Jing Shan as an authority in contemporary Buddhist art, where self-realization and self-enlightenment are realized through art, while the spirit of truth, goodness and beauty hidden in the paintings resonate with all beings, guiding us to listen to our own hearts in life, and to initiate reflection and dialogue.

Amongst which, the following three are exalted as the most prominent Chinese Buddhist artists in modern times: Chang Dai-chien, Pu Xinyu (Puru), and Xia Jing Shan. The youngest of the three, Xia demonstrated vast and remarkable strengths and unique artistic abilities.

佛教藝術乃綜合性之文化結晶,須集宗 教義理、人物造型、服裝髮飾、手持象 徵以及空間結構等知識於一爐,方能成 就無上殊勝之境界,若非博涉群經、思 慮超俗、筆精墨妙,難以望其一二。故

Buddhist art is an integration of cultural essences and requires reaching an extraordinary level in order to accomplish the culmination of knowledge on religious principles, character styling, details on the depicted clothing, accessories, symbolic hand-held attributes, and also spatial compositions. Without extensive knowledge of scriptures, transcendental thinking, and ingenious abilities for applying the ink and brush, it would be impossible to master the art form. Therefore, very few have been revered as Buddhist art masters in history.

近代中國佛像藝術饒富特色者,首 推三人,一為張大千,二為溥心畬, 三則為夏荊山,夏荊山晚出,更能 博彩眾長,匠心獨造。張大千中年 進敦煌臨摹壁畫,故於人物佛像典 雅絢爛,直追盛唐風韻。溥心畬人 物精湛飄逸,尤以鍾馗、鬼魅魍魎 造像,極盡夢幻唐突、戲謔詼諧之 能事,以畫寓世間百態,其情入理。

相對於兩位前輩文人畫家,夏荊山 人物繪畫,上窺佛道義理,下綜民 間傳說,渾渾乎納萬象於筆端,恢 恢乎採百家之眾長,其壯偉堂皇聿 著、形象莊嚴萬象、內涵奧窈幽渺。

夏荊山兼容佛教出世與五行奇遁之 學,畢生致力於佛教繪畫,匯歷代 宗教繪畫之長,舉凡文人繪畫之飄 逸灑脫、傳統廟宇壁畫之宏構巨擘, 西藏造像藝術之嚴謹整飭,道釋水 路法會人物之精神風采,瑰奇幻化, 存乎一心。

「萬法心生:夏荊山藝術經典展」 集夏荊山歷年藝術精品,甚是少見。

夏荊山早年專擅工筆繪畫,山水、 人物率皆精通。1949年渡海來臺, 皈依南亭法師,專研佛學,並於嘉 義、雲林傳揚繪畫,弟子無數,往 後移居美國,1988年閉關十月,體 會佛法甚深妙處,發願以藝術弘揚 佛法,往後設書院於北京傳習佛教 繪畫,其藝術造詣變化莫測,下筆 成真。其繪畫皆由自悟中來,終能 妙體古今,諦觀世法之虛幻,因假 而立,萬法唯心得造,諸相由心而 生。

Amongst which, the following three are exalted as the most prominent Chinese Buddhist artists in modern times: Chang Dai-chien, Pu Xinyu (Puru), and Xia Jing Shan. The youngest of the three, Xia demonstrated vast and remarkable strengths and unique artistic abilities. In his middle adulthood, Chang Daichien studied and replicated wall paintings at the grottoes of Dunhuang, and he became a master of elegant and splendid Buddhist icons and created artworks that exude an essence similar to those from the Tang dynasty’s height of power. Pu Xinyu was renowned for his refined and ethereal figure paintings, especially those of Zhong Kui and spirits and monsters. He was a master of phantasmic, peculiar, satirical and witty images, and he used his paintings to serve as metaphors for mortal affairs and to convey reasons and sentiments. Compared to these two literati painters before him, Xia Jing Shan referenced Buddhist ethics in his figure paintings and also integrated elements of folklore, with the myriad phenomena of the universe gathered at the tip of his ink brush and the strengths from various schools of thought consolidated. He created paintings that are grand, majestic, reverend, and vast, with connotations that are profound and intricate.

Well versed in Buddhism and the traditional Chinese fivefold conceptual scheme of Wuxing (or “Five Phases or Five Agents”), Xia was devoted in making Buddhist paintings throughout his life and developed a style that merged the strengths of religious art from various eras, including the ethereal free-spiritedness of the literati painting, traditional temple mural’s grand and masterful composition, and Tibetan iconography’s rigorous control. The Taoist and Buddhist figures and beings of higher realms depicted by him are spiritedly transformed and ingeniously crafted.

On view in the exhibition at the Tainan Art Museum, “All The Dharmas Emanate from Within: Xia Jing Shan Art Exhibition” are rare exceptional artworks from Master Xia’s extensive oeuvre. He specialized in traditional Chinese realistic painting (gongbi) in the early stage of his art career and created exquisite landscape and figure paintings in this style. After relocating to Taiwan in 1949, he converted to Buddhism under the guidance of Venerable Master Nan Ting. Xia was devoted in the studies of Buddhism and created paintings in Chiayi and Yunlin to pass on Buddhist teachings, where many were under his tutelage. Xia later moved to the United States and lived as a recluse for 10 months in 1988, whereby he was enlightened by Buddhism’s wondrous profundity. He then made it his life’s mission to propagate Buddhist teachings and proceeded to establish a Buddhist art academy in Beijing. Xia’s artistic achievement was diverse and boundless, and he demonstrated the abilities to express truthfully with his ink and brush. His paintings were created through self-awakening, and he was able to marvelously understand the past and the present. He insightfully contemplated on the mundane phenomena’s superficial elusiveness and understood that all dharmas are created only by the mind, and all forms originate from the heart.

展覽分為兩大主題,一為「入世紅 塵」乃是鍾馗、天神等傳說題材,尤 以鍾馗嫁妹、出巡等作品,群象羅 列,前後雜沓,歡呼擁簇,動作奇特, 神情詼諧而怪誕,觀之令人驚駭不 已。另一主題為「超凡境界」,屬佛 教題材,舉凡佛陀、菩薩、羅漢、護 法皆能筆調灑脫,造像莊嚴而富麗。

2022年夏荊山藝術於臺南市美術館 展示,開啟現代佛教藝術於美術館展 示之先河,再者,南美館場域寬縱適 切,足以展現夏荊山巨幅畫作之宏大 構思與氣魄。

欣逢「萬法心生:夏荊山藝術經典 展」於臺灣歷史最悠久之府城且最現 代與嶄新之美術館舉行之際,吾人信 使夏荊山藝術得以彰顯,以藝術啟沃 人心,實為至所期盼。

潘襎 ABOUT PAN FAN

The exhibition is divided into the two themes, and the first is “The Secular World”, which explores the legends of Zhong Kui (the vanquisher of evil beings) and other deities. In particular, the artworks depicting the wedding of Zhong Kui’s sister and the demon hunter out on inspection show complex portrayals and exude an animated energy. The peculiar gestures and amusing and bizarre facial expressions depicted are quite incredible to see. The second theme is “The Transcendent Realm” and includes majestic and splendid portraits of Buddha, bodhisattvas, arhats, and dharma protectors painted with liberated brushwork.

Presented at the Tainan Art Museum, this exhibition of Xia Jing Shan’s art marks a ground-breaking example of showing modern Buddhist art in an art museum setting. Moreover, the Tainan Art Museum’s spacious venue is also exceptional for showing Master Xia’s grand and dynamic large-scale paintings.

For All The Dharmas Emanate From Within: Xia Jing Shan Art Exhibition to be presented in Taiwan’s most historical city and also in the city’s newest art museum, I trust that Master Xia’s artworks will be greatly appreciated, and people’s hearts will be nurtured and enlightened by art.

Director of the Asia Museum of Modern Art at Asia University

Pan Fan holds a Master of Advanced Study (diplôme d'études approfondies, DEA) from Paris Nanterre University and is a Doctor of Literature from Osaka University, Japan. An art history doctoral candidate at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne, he also holds a master's degree in art from Kobe University, Japan. He is the former director of the Tainan Art Museum. An associate professor and department director at the Department of Cultural Assets and Reinvention and Graduate Institute of Arts Studies at the Fo Guang University, Pan also teaches part-time at the National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei National University of the Arts, Chinese Culture University, and National Cheng Kung University.

Master Xia Jing Shan’s works perhaps draw us back to a guidance of how to live from the heart. The gentle spirit running through the works recalls a deep tradition of storytelling and belief via the Buddha and the wisdom of renouncing superficial values.

「萬法心生:夏荊山藝術經典展」以從自性中體悟真理為核 心,探討佛畫藝術大師夏荊山的作品。大師因為信仰而作畫 數十年,以畢生之功參悟佛法,創作內容豐富,表現多元, 透過細緻入微的藝術性與筆法,表現出山水人物等題材,色 彩的應用更是時而自然,時而具象徵性。

This exhibition “All the Dharmas Emanate from Within” takes a core Buddhist saying to explore the idea of universal truth. The works shown are by the Buddhist modern master Xia Jing Shan, whose oeuvre expresses a lifetime of devotion and philosophical thought through his religious paintings produced over several decades. The works range in subject from figures such as Zhong Kui to Avalokiteśvara, Arhats and Bodhidharma. Artistically, the brushwork is delicate and detailed, precisely executing figurative expression and character, elements of landscape as well as an exacting use of colour that is sometimes naturalistic, sometimes symbolic. Expression through the brush draws on traditions in Chinese ink painting over centuries, and Xia Jing Shan’s artistic voice is one of commitment to key Buddhist principles and a concerted exploration of and engagement with Buddhist themes throughout the course of his life.

疫情迫使我們必須對於人生的目的與社 會生活的意義進行哲學性的反思。面對 這場危機,良善、惻隱之心,以及普遍 人性觀也變得比過往更加重要。人們開

始更加珍惜信仰、文化傳承,以及生命 中所有微小但珍貴的事物。夏荊山大師 的作品能夠引導我們在生活中聆聽自己 的心,其作品溫柔的精神,呼應著佛陀 的信仰與說故事的深厚宗教傳統,並且 傳遞著擺脫虛浮的智慧。根源於東方的 靜坐冥想,如今在西方世界也成為了一 種普遍的心性鍛鍊法。透過持續的練習 與紀律,藉由內在的沉澱,使生命的內 在核心覺醒,達到證悟。

In the last two years, humanity has been tested as the world grappled with an unexpected virus, causing whole communities to be locked down in isolation. This situation forced a philosophical meditation on our purpose and the meaning of life within society. Kindness, compassion and common humanity have become even more pressing than before as we’ve confronted this crisis across the world. Belief, heritage, and the precious small things in life have emerged as what we hold dear and the importance of culture as a vehicle for spiritual repair and reflection clearly has a strong role to play in forging human interaction and dialogue. Master Xia Jing Shan’s works perhaps draw us back to a guidance of how to live from the heart. The gentle spirit running through the works recalls a deep tradition of storytelling and belief via the Buddha and the wisdom of renouncing superficial values. Meditation, now a common practice of mindfulness in the Western world, is nevertheless deeply embedded in Asian society. The inner core or heart of our beings, with practise and discipline, allows enlightenment to be drawn out through inward immersion from within.

To exhibit the works of Xia Jing Shan in Tainan, Taiwan’s oldest cultural city with centuries of historical development, is meaningful in other ways as well, as it allows audiences there to gain first-hand access to a broad range of works from the Foundation. This exhibition explores how core ethical and cultural themes that run deeply through cultural, religious and philosophical thought, are still present and hold value to contemporary audiences. Common to humanity yet central to East Asian culture, these works can be viewed as an impressive oeuvre produced over several decades. In showing the works, we hope to open up reflections and dialogues that resonate in society through the display of the singular artistic practice of the Buddhist master Xia Jing Shan.

What I love about his work is that it is so elegant. So many of the pieces have the feel of a poem, a quiet meditation that is simple and beautiful. He’s masterful at using an economy of line to express sensuous motifs, like the best Picasso drawings

此次回顧夏荊山大師經典名作的展覽 「萬法心生:夏荊山藝術經典展」,依 創作內容區分二大主題呈現,展出詮 釋佛教各種經典人物的特色與性格的作 品,包括專捉惡鬼的驅魔大神鍾馗、呈 現怒相的護持佛法之神、大慈大悲觀世 音菩薩,以及各尊菩薩像等。透過策展 的方式,讓一系列精彩豐富的角色能夠 在同一空間裡與彼此對話。

This elegant exhibition, All The Dharmas Emanate from Within: Xia Jing Shan Art Exhibition showcasing a retrospective of the exquisite work of Master Xia Jing Shan is divided into two themes, each comprising works that represent a particular aspect and/or character in the Buddhist pantheon of legendary figures. From Zhong Kui, a legendary vanquisher of ghosts and evil beings, and Dharmapala, a wrathful Buddhist defender of justice, to Avalokiteśvara, the embodiment of compassion, and other bodhisattvas, this approach to curation allows for a delightfully wide range of expressive characters to enter into dialogue with one another as they face off wall to wall.

夏荊山大師擅長使用形式的表現來呈現所描繪的主題的定位與特色,透過多層次的符號應用以及構圖 與觀眾產生互動,藉由深思熟慮的線條執行,喚起永恆與稍縱即逝的對比,表現出特殊的美感。作品 之一〈竹鶴觀音〉所呈現的披袍,表現出流暢寫意的圓滑線條,優雅地呼應著祥鶴弧形曲線的脖子, 同時也與點綴著金箔的尖銳岩石峭壁形成對比。位於上方的竹林形狀多刺卻有著柔和的色彩,巧妙地

串聯起整幅畫作裡豐富的紋理與質感。如同大師其它的作品,這幅畫作的色彩應用也同樣的散發出賞 心悅目與掌控得宜的和諧感。

相較於其筆下所詮釋的愉悅安謐場景,大師也創作出一系列充滿爆發力與能量的畫作,例如〈準提佛 母〉中有著八支手臂的大菩薩,身旁有眾脅侍相隨,包括天王、龍王、金剛力士等,服飾上均有著豐 富的細節與華麗的紋路,手持各類器物,周圍祥雲瀰漫。整幅以藍、赭色為基調,以對稱方式組織結構, 賦予此充滿生命力的作品穩定與祥和的秩序感。

Xia Jing Shan was masterly at using form to signify function and character, symbolism to work on many levels, and composition to engage the viewer. The contrasts he evokes between the eternal and ephemeral through his thoughtful use of line is of particular beauty. For example, in his Avalokiteśvara Amongst Cranes and Bamboos , the fluid curvilinear lyrical lines of the drapery are elegantly mimicked in the arching necks of the cranes and yet strongly contrasted in the sharp tight crags of the rocks (beautifully highlighted in gold leaf), and then the prickly shapes and yet soft delineations of color in the bamboo above bring a clever coherence to the textures of the image. This work as in all Master Xia’s works also uses color to bring his compositions into a pleasing and controlled harmony.

In contrast to the apparent ease of some scenes, others are full of a riotous explosive energy and dynamism as in his work Cundī in which the eight-armed Bodhisattva is surrounded by heavenly kings, dragon kings, gods, and generals all dressed in richly detailed and incredibly beautiful patterns, all holding different attributes with clouds waving expressively around them. And yet, the color themes of rich blue and ochre that run throughout the piece and use of exacting symmetry allow even a work of such vitality to have a centeredness and sense of peaceful order.

夏荊山是位名符其實的細節大師,欣賞大師的 作品時建議將步調放慢,細細品味。舉例來說, 〈紅衣達摩祖師〉這件作品中各種線條的表現, 便充份地展現出大師精湛的藝術技巧。此作中鬍 鬚與胸毛的精細筆觸,與通肩寬袖長袍所表現出 的自由開放筆法產生對比,形成視覺性豐富且引 人入勝的畫面。〈文殊菩薩〉中多元的圖紋、質 感、形狀與顏色,以及衣領、坐騎、華麗披袍、 珊瑚、頭飾、毛髮、祥雲等元素,讓作品成為了 一場視覺饗宴。

無庸置疑的夏荊山大師對於色彩的組合、對比與 融合的傑出掌握,讓他的創作與眾不同,加上對 於線條極其優雅的運用,以及詩意般的顏色處 理,更是將他的作品提升到另外一個境界。大師 同時也透過創新的手法表現傳統藝術主題,提出 全新的意象以及重新塑造後的詮釋,例如他對鍾 馗的形象的再詮釋就顯得細緻與更加平易近人。

大師對於收與放更是有著獨到的理解,能夠在該 淋漓盡致的表現時釋放出最豐富與華麗的一面, 同時也能夠掌握何時該克制,哪裡該留白,適 當的用金色點綴,以及對於色彩應用控制得宜。

大師天賦異稟的藝術本能在其創作中表露無遺, 在其漫長的創作生涯中,他也一直不斷的自我精 進。此次的展覽讓觀眾可以浸淫在夏大師所創造 的豐富且美好的世界裡,這個世界以佛教的理性 與感性為中心,透過大師之手昇華。

Ever a master of details, Master Xia’s work can truly be best appreciated by slowing down and looking closely. It is in the contrasting use of line and technique as in for example Bodhidharma in a Red Robe that we can best see his virtuosic mastery. In this work the intricacy of the minute brushstrokes used for the beard and chest hair in contrast to the loose free open immediacy of the brushstrokes in his robe create a visually exciting and engaging image. Or in Mañjuśrī it is in the diversity of patterns, textures, shapes, and colors, from the collar and saddle to the intricate robes, to the coral, headdresses, hair, and clouds, that create a feast for the eyes.

Without question Master Xia’s mastery of color combinations, contrasts and harmonies distinguish his work but it is also his extremely elegant use of line and poetic handling of paint that elevates his work. He also creates new approaches to old artistic types, allowing for fresh imagery and reimaged interpretation, such as in his much more approachable and refined images of Zhong Kui. Finally, it is his brilliant understanding of where to give excess, abundance and exuberance and where to hold back, where to allow for negative space, reserved use of gold, restrained use of color that remind us that he was born with a gifted artistic instinct that he continued to perfect throughout his long career. This exhibition allows the viewer to immerse themselves in the rich and beautiful world Master Xia created centered on Buddhist thought and sensibilities and elevated by his masterful hand.

An Art Pilgrimage –the Tzu Chi Jing Si Hall Exhibition Tour

朝聖藝術之旅慈濟靜思堂巡迴展

財 團法人夏荊山文化藝術基金會(以 下簡稱夏荊山基金會)秉持著「藝 術生活化」的信念,與臺灣佛教慈濟基金 會(以下簡稱慈濟基金會)合作舉辦「萬 法心生:夏荊山大師佛畫藝術經典展」, 首站在全臺灣第一座慈濟靜思堂於花蓮 從 2022 年 8 月 29 日至 10 月 11 日展出, 規劃 2023 年 2 月 ~4 月巡迴至臺北新店 與高雄。展覽以「萬法心生」為名,呈現 「慈、悲、喜、捨」的具象概念,表達慈 濟「慈悲為懷,濟世救人」的極簡初心, 與夏荊山藉佛法修持融匯而出的佛理睿 智與筆墨精華,慈濟慈善精神結合夏荊山 佛畫藝術,希望大眾透過修身養心,而能 萬事自在隨緣,終得善果。

The Xia Jing Shan Arts and Culture Foundation (hereinafter referred to as the Xia Jing Shan Foundation), upholding the ideal of bringing art into life, held the “All The Dharmas Emanate from Within—Xia Jing Shan Master Art Exhibition” in partnership with Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation (hereinafter referred to as Tzu Chi Foundation), and the exhibition’s first stop was in Hualien, at the first Jing Si Hall built by the Tzu Chi Foundation, from August 29 to October 11, 2022. The exhibition is expected to move to Xindian, Taipei and Kaohsiung during February to April of 2023. The exhibition is entitled “All The Dharmas Emanate from Within” , and are displayed in along 4 major axes of “maitrī, karuṇā, muditā, upeksā” (which is kindness, pity, joy and equanimity), to express Tzu Chi Foundation’s initial ideal of “with compassion and relief” and with Xia Jing Shan’s Buddhist practice that integrated Buddhist wisdom and the essence of the brush and ink. Through this combination of Tzu Chi's humanistic spirit with Xia Jing Shan's Buddhist painting and art, it is hoped that the public can, through self and spiritual cultivation, do everything freely and achieve good karma.

Dr. Ching Shiang Chen, professor of the Department of Graduate Institute of History at the Chinese Culture University, conducted an art tour on the opening ceremony, explaining the classics and origins of various series of Buddha statues incisively.

The first exhibition was jointly held by the Hualien County government, Tzu Chi Foundation and Xia Jing Shan Foundation, and was undertaken by Lissome Arts & Culture Co. Ltd, with the grand opening ceremony at 1pm on August 29, 2022. Invited guests including Hualien County mayor Chen-Wei Hsu, Tzu Chi Foundation CEO Po-Wen Yen, Xia Jing Shan Foundation CEO Dr. Chung-Chieh Chao represented by the organizers, while other VIPs including Rei-Chang Tsai representing the Legislator Kun-Chi Fu, Tzu Chi Foundation deputy CEO Rey-Sheng He, Tzu Chi Education Mission CEO Pen-Jung Wang, Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation CEO Chun-Lung Lin, Vice President of Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital Ping-An Wu, CNEWS Media Group CEO Shih-Chang Wu and President Yao-Shang Chiu, Dr. Ching Shiang Chen, professor of the Department of Graduate Institute of History at the Chinese Culture University, Head of Research and Administration Department at Hualien County Government Kun-Ru Wu, Head of Agriculture Department at Hualien County Government Shu-Wen Chen were all present to offer their well wishes to the event.
