SANTORINI ISLAND Explore the island’s towns Holidays in Santorini is the dream of a lifetime for many people. As this is the top tourist destination in Greece, the island is famous for the impressive caldera, the volcano and the romantic sunset. In fact, it is frequently included among the best destinations in the world. Over the last years, tourist season has extended in Santorini, from early April until early November due to the many cruise ships that dock there. Due to the good ferry connection with other Greek islands, holidays in Santorini can easily be combined with holidays in other islands. There are also many charter flights to Santorini from abroad, making it easy to come to this small paradise on Earth.
Explore the island’s beaches Firá is the picturesque capital of the island; perched high up on the edge of the Caldera, it looks like a marvellous painting. Firá, together with Oia, Imerovígli and Firostefáni located high above on a cliff, make up the so-called “Caldera’s eyebrow”, the balcony of Santorini, which offers an amazing view of the volcano. Other famous smaller villages are Akrotíri and Méssa Vounó, with their famous archaeological sites, Pýrgos, Karterádes, Emporió, Ammoúdi, Finikiá, Períssa, Perívolos, Megalohóri, Kamári, Messariá and Monólithos: some of the villages are cosmopolitan some more peaceful; they are surrounded by vast vineyards; whitewashed cliff-top towns with castles affording amazing views out over the Aegean. Soaking up the villages’ distinctive traditional atmosphere is a very rewarding experience.
The beaches in Santorini are much different than other beaches in Greece due to their special geographical features. Red and black volcanic pebbles lay the shores of Santorini beaches and steep cliffs provide a picturesque ambience. The most famous of Santorini beaches is the Red beach, while particularly popular are Perissa, Kamari and Perivolos. Source: www.greeka.com
Where is Santorini Santorini is a gifted island that has become the ultimate travel destination over the years and is among the most romantic getaways worldwide, not unreasonably, since it has distinct dramatic landscapes, a captivating wild natural beauty and offers aweinspiring images and intriguing sensations to all visitors. Being an island and a particularly awesome place it is ideal for unparalleled summer vacation as it provides precious shores, an open sea, attention-grabbing views and the famed warm Greek hospitality and way of life. Santorini, or Thera as it is officially called, is a small Greek island, with an area of 96 km2, in the southern Aegean Sea. It belongs to a group of islands, called Cyclades, which consists of numerous islands that share the same characteristics and architecture. Santorini is a real gem and succeeds in enchanting every single person that sets foot on its magical land. It is actually the southernmost Cycladic island and lies between the Greek islands Ios and Anafi. It is at a distance of 130 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus in Athens, the capital of Greece, and 70 nautical miles from Crete, the largest Greek island. It is located about 200 km southeast of the mainland and is accessible by ferryboat or plane
Architecture The traditional architecture of Santorini is similar to that of the other Cyclades, with low-lying cubical houses, made of local stone and whitewashed or limewashed with various volcanic ashes used as colours. The unique characteristic is the common utilisation of the hypรณskapha: extensions of houses dug sideways or downwards into the surrounding pumice. These rooms are prized because of the high insulation provided by the air-filled pumice, and are used as living quarters of unique coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter. These are premium storage space for produce, especially for wine cellaring: the Kรกnava wineries of Santorini. When strong earthquakes struck the island in 1956, half the buildings were completely destroyed and a large number suffered repairable damage. The underground dwellings along the ridge overlooking the caldera, where the instability of the soil was responsible for the great extent of the damage, needed to be evacuated. Most of the population of Santorini had to emigrate to Piraeus and Athens
Santorini’s buses (KTEL) Transportation in Santorini Island Buses Public bus transportation (KTEL) on Santorini Island is efficient and affordable. It is used by locals and tourists alike. Fira or Thira is Santorini’s main city, and home to the central bus station. Buses run to/from Fira to popular tourist destinations including: Perissa (Black Beach), Kamari Beach, Akrotiri (Red Beach), Oia, as well as Athenios port, and the airport. All journeys are under an hour. There are no buses that run directly from one side of Santorini to the other. Visitors who hope to travel to both sides of the island will become very familiar with the station in Fira where transfers occur Buses run from approximately 7 A.M. to 10 P.M., though in the high season they run later. In winter most routes run every 90 minutes while in summer they run as often as every half hour. Schedules are pinned or glued to boards at bus stops but they change frequently. Check with your hotel for the most current schedule
Since 1988 we connect all the villages of Santorini to eachother. Being in possession of 23 buses, we always try to serve our island’s visitors and residents. In all theese years we make our best for the public service, we update our equipment and services. New and modern buses and new ideas in order to serve the best way every visitor of Santorini.
SANTORINI MAIN BUS STATION (FIRA) Fira’s bus station does not look like a bus station. It is an open air terrace with buses packed in a tiny space and people all around. Crazy, but it works! The station is just south of the main square on a one-way side street. Buses may be unlabeled and empty when you get there. Know what time your bus is supposed to leave and be patient. Your driver will most likely appear out of nowhere just before departure.
KTEL buses carry out daily bus routes to almost all destinations. The KTEL terminal is located in the square of Fira next to the taxis. Transportation around Santorini Island is made easy by an efficient, affordable bus system. Schedules change, buses get crowded, and the island is hilly ‌ so pay attention and hold on.
