Dear Xavier Family-
Happy Catholic Schools Week! We have the privilege of kicking off February in celebration mode – February 1 was actually our annual Catholic Schools Week Mass and the entire week is full of themes, fun and special treats. Catholic schools around the nation use this week to thank their parishes, acknowledge their benefactors, and celebrate with their families. Let’s take a few moments this month to count our blessings as a shining light in a galaxy of stars.
The first Catholic school in our country opened in 1783. At the time, and for the better part of the first two centuries of their existence, American Catholic schools were a response to a hostile public school system that derided Catholicism and espoused Protestant Christianity. As Catholics immigrated, they established close communities with fellow Catholics, frequently centering on the parish. Each neighborhood seemingly had its own parish, its own ethnic and cultural identity, and soon, its own school.
As Catholics gained stature and recognition in the United States, Catholic schools became increasingly mission focused – not only for the children of Catholic families, but for the poor and marginalized. Catholic religious orders opened schools in crime-ridden neighborhoods to give the young people hope of a better life. They brought exceptional education and an evangelist’s spirit to areas of the country that no other institution was willing to serve. Many of us have a clear memory of sitting in our Catholic school classroom, being taught by religious sisters, learning about what high standards truly look like. Even as lay teachers slowly became more the rule than the exception, that desire for excellence continued to drive the Catholic education system. We want to make students more fully human, more completely cognizant of the dignity of all, and more capable of affecting positive change. Some Catholic schools advertise their two goals – college and Heaven. I pray that here at Xavier, we can aim for a few more things – a more just world, lives of grace, fruitful careers, happy families, legacies of goodness, and eventually Heaven.
So for whom should we offer prayers of thanksgiving during this Catholic Schools Week?
First and foremost, let’s thank God for the gifts and blessings of our lives, but especially for the chance to come together around this sacred community at Xavier. Next, to our sponsoring parishes and the pastors who make Xavier a priority – in increasingly challenging times, they see the value in what we do and invest in the future leaders of the Church who roam the halls of Xavier each day. To the pastors and their parishes, thank you for believing in us and thank you for making Catholic education possible. Next, we thank our generous benefactors – every amount of support makes a difference. Our annual system gala, Celebrate, happens this week and it is a great reminder of how generous our friends, families and alumni are in order to keep Xavier strong and successful. We thank our teachers who answer the call to vocation by choosing Catholic schools at a time when they could certainly be better compensated by teaching elsewhere. They are the core of Xavier – their example as much as their expertise makes our students who they are. Finally, thank you to the families who entrust us with the task of cooperating in educating their young people. It is an honor to be a part of such a sacred task. We stand with our fellow Catholic schools this week to celebrate what makes us different and look ahead to what continues to make us great. Thank you for being part of our Xavier family and Happy Catholic Schools Week!
For God’s Greater Glory,
Mike Mauthe Principal

If you missed the Junior Parent Night on January 18th, please visit the Xavier school counseling website, where you'll find a recording of the event and handouts.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher Conferences for the third term will be held on Wednesday, February 15 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. They will be held in the commons and gathering space.
College Fair: March 8, 2022
The 2023 Xavier College Fair is just around the corner! With over 70 schools already committed to attending, we are sure it’s going to be a great event.
The Fair will take place on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Xavier High School from 6 PM to 8 PM. We hope to see you there!
Youth Risk Behavior Survey
Our school is taking part in the Youth Risk Behavior Survey sponsored by the Department of Public Instruction. The survey will ask about health behaviors that keep young people healthy, as well as behaviors that result in unintentional and intentional injuries, tobacco use, and alcohol and other drug use. It will also ask about bullying, sexual risk behaviors (mostly for high school students), online risk behaviors, stress and anxiety, self-harm, dietary behavior and physical activity. It also focuses on positive things like strong connections to the school and to other people.
The survey will be given during Term 3, generally in February or March. Students will be asked to fill out an anonymous, online questionnaire that takes about 25-35 minutes to complete. They will take the survey during X Period with their mentor groups.
The survey has been designed to protect your child’s privacy. Students will not put their names on the survey and it does not ask for student IDs or any other individual identifiers. The classroom setting will be set up like a test so that students’ answers remain private. The school will not have access to individual students’ answers and no class or student will ever be mentioned by name in a report of the results. Your child will get no benefit right away from taking part in the survey. However, the results of this survey do help students by providing schools and the community with information that is used to improve health and safety programs. We would like all students to take part in the survey, butthe survey is voluntary No action will be taken against you, or your child, if your child does not take part. Students can skip any question that they do not wish to answer. In addition, students may stop participating in the survey at any point without penalty. If you have questions about the survey or wish to opt-out your child, please contact Lori Schuh, School Counselor, at (920)882-6912 or lschuh@xaviercataholicschools.org.

World Language Honor Societies
French, German and Spanish students may be eligible for membership in one or more of our world language honor societies. To qualify academically, students must be sophomores or older and have completed three terms of their language at Xavier. Their grade point average in the language must be at least 3.5, with no grade lower than a B.
In addition to the academic requirements, new members must earn a minimum of six service/social/ cultural-activity points by the end of third term. Continuing members must continue to maintain the 3.5 grade point average in the language and earn eight points each year. The most popular ways to earn points have been by preparing and serving international meals for family and/or friends, hosting international students, viewing international films, and tutoring students who are struggling with language learning.
There are many other opportunities to earn points. The complete list is included on the application for membership, which may be obtained from any world language teacher. The deadline for applying for membership, either as a new or a continuing member, is Friday, March 24th.
If you have any questions or want more information, please contact your son or daughter’s world language teacher.
Xavier’s International Program
Did you know Xavier is hosting more than 40 international students this year from 15 different countries? Not only do these students bring a global feel to our campus, they help our students make connections around the world. The only way we can host so many International Students is because Xavier families so yes again and again to opening up their homes and providing these students a place to live. It is an amazing experience and we are always looking for more families to host!
Contact mparish@xaviercatholicschools.org for more information. Curious? Read the reflection below from one of our own Xavier students.
As I reflect on my past 2 years of hosting I can notice multiple things that I can rejoice about. One thing is the memories I make by interchanging what we are entertained about most: that may be for Americans favorite movies, traditions like thanksgiving meals or Christmas white elephants. Hosting someone from Spain has also allowed me to work on my second language better, and have someone there to help me along the way. This too I can share as I can help my student with his language here. My favorite experience hosting has been the long term friendship that I can make interacting with someone that I feel quite different from, but at the same time so connected to. Overall I have had a wonderful experience hosting and wish that everyone could try it to make memories and gain a new perspective. I thank Xavier for this opportunity to explore new cultures and grow overall as a person.
