Perhaps to know Coronel personally helps me read his paintings in a better way. For me his work not only reflects a generation, but It’s also a mirror on himself. His recent paintings show us his love for the cinema, which he studied in Buenos Aires, his interests in pop culture and the banal, in videogames and the virtual worlds, a nostalgia for his childhood and the places he inhabited, but most of all they reveal his fast-paced personality and his love for painting and it’s plastic possibilities.

For me Xavier Coronel is essentially a millennial painter above all, because he appropriates images and information that he consumes in fast ways every day, and lets himself be contaminated by what he saw, read, or heard, and incorporates that into his work almost as something lived by himself, like an extension of himself and his personality.

His recent paintings are constructed in a way like an Instagram feed, showing the diversity of consumed information and the wide range of images and genres that attract him. That’s why is so normal to find Justin Bieber’s foot and gold club next to a still from a videogame, or an almost abstract excerpt of a film poster, this, without a doubt reflects the mind of a generation that is plagued with information, where in his work the hierarchy is broken and they are all flattened in the same relation between the other images.

La muestra ha sido pensada desde hace más de un año solamente para el CAC, utilizando dos pabellones según la museografía planeada, el gran formato de las obras, mega polípticos algunos y construyendo la muestra con los espacios en tensión desde el apilamiento y el vacío.

Un ovni estrellado, un edificio en una roca, torres petroleras, un fantasma, una mascara de animal, una mujer y un yate flotan uno encima del otro en una composición de adición que no respeta escalas ni perspectiva, se conglomeran como un meteorito o planeta en donde existen solos, el eco de un film que nunca se rodara se hace presente en ellos, la historia de una cuidad de petróleo, un musical de terror y ciencia ficción ambientado en una cuidad frente al mar en donde un grupo de burgueses se someten al rodaje de una película maldita. El extraño musical quedara suspendido como sus elementos en el afiche. El petróleo como supuesta metáfora de poder.

Apropiándome del lenguaje de afiche clásico de cine mi interés reside mas allá de lo narrativo, mas allá de las anécdotas ambiguas de sus elementos y la historia fílmica que esconden, pretendo volver plástico, material, algo que no lo ha sido completamente, hacer evidente el carácter de mancha, de suspensión y de abstracción barroca que residen en este tipo de composiciones que hemos estado acostumbradas a consumir como espectadores, hoy la devuelvo de una manera extraña, hecha materia, inacabada y no muy definida, como el musical maldito que nunca llegaremos a ver.

Remake ausente del Angel exterminador de Buñuel, en donde yo hago una super-elipsis sonora con la banda sonora original del film mientras recreo plásticamente ciertos espacios físicos claves del interior de la casa de donde sus personajes nunca van a salir. Lo que queda es entonces una experiencia casi estructural poética sobre el sonido y el espacio, el interior de una casa burguesa mejicana. Los sonidos activan todo un ecosistema fantasma que hace reconocible o no los acontecimientos de dicho film emblemático.

La muestra SONOPO fue curada por Jorge Aycart en donde cada propuesta debía girar en torno a la figura de un futbolista de Lesotho, un país Africano en donde hablan Lesotho, cada artista debía armar M U político E S T R Asociales P L O Ty culturales / M A A C de / un 2 0país 1 5 del dialécticas entre su obra y las líneas entre ficción y realidades cual sabíamos muy poco, mi obra giro en torno a la idea de icono nacional haciendo una instalación pictórica que pretendía ser un espacio recreado en la sala del rey del país, un retrato del futbolista con los trajes típicos del país, la altura y emplazamiento y el marco dorado de los dibujos de las dos piezas pretendían elevar como un altar en una pared de doble altura la imagen de un icono nacional adorado por el mismo rey que lo domina.

Nightshift Pt.I fue una video-instalacion in situ en donde yo proyecto de noche sobre un hueco en la estructura de un edificio abandonado algo que pasa de dia a travez de ese mismo gran segmento. La idea era generar una especie de portal o quiebre en el continuo espaciotiempo a manera de una ficción de terror en donde unos objetos rocosos ovalados van descendiendo desde los cielos lentamente.

Nightshift Pt.I was a site specific video video-installation where I projected in the night over a big hole in the structure of an abandoned building something that was happening during the day trough that same segment and our POV. The idea was to generate a sort off portal or break in the space-time continuum creating an eerie science fiction narrative of oval shaped objects descending from the skies slowly.

El paisaje de la costa como protagonista de un evento fantasma, un extraño objeto se ha estrellado hace muchos años atrás sobre las casas frente al mar, ahora una extraña figura rocosa que no se termina de definir como los Ku Klux Komics de Guston, hoy en una pesadilla, ese mundo es habitado por extraños seres que no se dejan ver, o no han llegado aun. Lo que nos es dado es el escenario para un evento del cual no sabemos nada mas que un nombre, un encuentro-ritual en un antiguo monolito negro en donde la civilización pasada ha sido opacada. Un show para los muertos vivientes.

Me interesan los micro relatos que se disparan al desestabilizar con elementos de ficción, fantasía que al abstraerlos del paisaje como un una lluvia de platillos voladores, la vegetación tropical, las rocas o la línea entre el mar y el rio se genera una nueva masa. Objetos de recreación vacacional, ahora completamente aplastados por una nueva realidad atemporal en donde el freak show, la ciencia ficción y el terror son invitados a bailar en la cena de los caníbales. El legado de la abstracción trato de invocar al dejar que el paisaje se construya a partir de la materia pictórica y que su tratamiento sea permeable con lo representado.

El inicio de la invasión extraterrestre de Fox Bay se gesta en esta obra que siendo la primera de la serie podría ser al mismo tiempo el episodio o viñeta final, por su excesiva decadencia.

Creo que es un error buscar tener una estética personal, es un poco confuso responder eso porque por lo menos yo trato de alejarme siempre de esa idea superficial de estilo, marca o sello. Si entiendo que hay cosas que me identifican, decisiones plásticas que inconscientemente marcan identidades, pero no me gusta pensar en esos términos, son solo una parte de la obra y uno debería estar constantemente cuestionando y experimentando. Últimamente estoy trabajando formatos un poco grandes, porque para mi son de tamaños medianos pero para cuestiones prácticas son dimensiones difíciles de coleccionar, cosa que me divierte un poco (podrá ser una forma de resistencia al mercado bidimensional) Uno siempre debe luchar por lo que cree y hacer eso en lo que uno cree, no hay otra forma adecuada de hacerlo para mi. Y bueno son usualmente o últimamente espacios de recreación de privilegio que son visitados en una realidad alterada en donde el horror de lo desconocido (me gusta demasiado el cine de terror por su pureza, es la madre de todos los géneros) viene a acechar como un fuera de campo a esa representación, en mi última muestra la excusa era una invasión extraterrestre en donde los extraterrestres eran replicas de Kanye West disfrazados de conejos, go figure. Son como pequeñas viñetas/postales post apocalípticas basadas en fotografías de lugares en donde yo crecí y vacacionaba.

Siempre hay una fuerza narrativa que domina un momento creativo y de ahí surgen las puestas en escena, luego soy cero ortodoxo para trabajar, mezclo desde óleo o acrílico hasta pluma y liquid paper, me enorgullece ser cero dandy para la pintura. _ Frafmento de entrevista

En esta obra, Proto Stoner Wall, la última de la serie Fox Bay, nos encontramos con un detalle de una especie de muralla destruida que se pierde en el mar como dividiendo dos playas o dos espacios, una frontera. Al fondo, a través de un tramo vacío vemos una de los platillos voladores estrellado en aguas poco profundas cerca de la arena. El titulo me ayuda a construir estos relatos entre la música la ciencia ficción, el miedo y la nostalgia, un piloto de otro mundo se ha estrellado en un lugar al cual el no pertenece.

You will love each other es una instalación de 7 bocetos (hechos después de las obras anulando su función de boceto) de algunas de las pinturas de gran dimensión, acá a modo de collage pop y en serie, las obras son impresiones de fotografías de las obras terminadas intervenidas con pintura y capas de otros materiales desechados del proceso inicial. En aquellos bocetos se pueden ver en repetición el ovni del film Mars Attacks el cual me apropio para utilizarlo en varias de mis obras.
