Picnic Power!

Be it a can of Irn-Bru and a packet of crisps or a wicker hamper full of delights, food always tastes better eaten out of doors Never underestimate the power of a picnic; they are great fun no matter how old you are.

There is something special about a picnic which is ageless. Don’t believe us? Then suggest one to your kids and watch the reaction, or think back to the picnics of your youth.

Where to eat your picnic For a teddy bear’s picnic look no further than taking your toddler into the garden and spreading out a rug but for the rest of us the West End is a treasure trove.

They were brilliant weren’t they?

The secret is simplicity: have everything ready to eat from the minute it is unwrapped or opened and go for smaller portions. Cut sandwiches and traybake cakes into fingers or two-bite-sized; likewise pick mini sausage rolls, pasties and pork pies, hard-boiled eggs already peeled, samosas and bhajis. Think buffet finger-food but more robust to reduce waste from spills, greedy family dogs and over-excited kids grabbing one of everything but only taking a single bite; no one frowns at second, seventh or ninth helpings on a picnic.

The cool-bag from the weekly shop and old ice cream tubs are fine.

Don’t bother with paper plates or napkins – a new J-cloth will double for both and can be rinsed out and put to work once home again.

When it comes to picnics for grown-ups, don’t try too hard! It should re-visit our childhood; so think comfort or nursery food with a twist. How about gourmet mustard or chutney on the sarnies, flasks of tomato soup but with a slug of Worcestershire sauce or even vodka if not driving; oxtail or Bovril with sherry? Make sandwiches with sourdough or artisan bread, but stick to the smaller-but-lots portions rule.

Complete the treats by tracking down a bag of pandrops, soor plooms or flying saucers and watch people smile. If you were bereft at the demise of Callard & Bowser hunt down Champion and Reeves’ nougat and butterscotch.

At posh events - think outdoor opera and drama - just go for it! You can cheat by hiding said supermarket cool bag and tubs in a wicker hamper or basket and score some shabby chic-style points by replacing the J-cloths with matching checked tea towels and drinking out of jamjars or mason jars. Go for a more sophisticated mix of the finger food rule because who wants to be bothered with plates and cutlery.

Glasgow Botanic Gardens and Kelvingrove Park were made for picnics. Take the time to re-explore them; we are all guilty of ignoring what’s on our doorsteps.

The Kelvin Walkway is another great place; and with so many fantastic food shops in the area all you need is the basics in your rucksack and a cool bag to fill with food to go.

Did you know that Kelvingrove is a hub for the Giving Nature a Home in Glasgow Project run by the RSPB and family events are held every weekend with crafts and trails?

Go along, then give your young ornithologists a picnic afterwards.

Mini champagne and wine bottles, premixed cans or individual Perrier bottles with (non-plastic) straws look far cooler than plastic glasses.

And remember that these are all Scottish picnics and there should always be Irn-Bru.

Separation and Child Contact Separation from a spouse or partner can be one of the most life changing events for any person and it can be difficult to maintain a relationship with your ex partner for the benefit of the children when there has been a breakdown of the personal relationship. Following separation there are several factors that may prevent agreement, and this is often when parties seek legal advice in relation to their rights and responsibilities.

I often find the most difficult cases are the ones where children are involved and if agreement cannot be reached it is crucial at an early stage to take advice with a view to agreeing arrangements for the children and there are several ways this can be done.

One of the biggest tasks for a solicitor is assessing the client’s current circumstances with a view to advising them on proposed contact arrangements that will work in the long-term in child’s best interests.

Contact can be regulated in a number of ways with the most common being a consensual agreement between the parties and this is framed in a document known as a Minute of Agreement. This document is drafted by a solicitor and then the terms are agreed after negotiation. It is signed by both parties agreeing the provisions for contact. This document can also include where and with whom the child resides and any other matters agreed between the parents.

Following signature, the Minute of Agreement is then registered. If the contact terms can’t be agreed parties can attend mediation with a view to agreeing matters with the assistance of an experienced Mediator. This step can be taken at any stage and often clients find it useful to mediate in order to address the underlying issues preventing them moving forward. Finally, if there is no agreement in relation to contact an action will require to be raised and the court will determine this.

Solicitors practicing in this area view this stage as a last resort after all other avenues have been explored as contact arrangements tend to succeed when the parties are involved in the decision-making process.

In the event the Sheriff requires to make the decision in a particular case, the only test the court will apply is the welfare of the child. The Sheriff determining the case shall regard the welfare of the child concerned as the paramount consideration. It is also important to note that the court shall not make any order in relation to the child unless it considers that it would be better West End Life Magazine

for the child that the order be made than that none should be made at all.

When discussing contact arrangements, it is also important that the child’s views are sought as this will assist in achieving contact arrangements that will work in the long term. It is worth noting that at the age of 12 and over in terms of the Legislation the child’s views are significant and considered by the court. Although the official age is 12 years, in my experience the court is more frequently ascertaining the views of children at an earlier age and there a number of methods for this to be done.

The Independent Mortgage Store reaches a milestone this year by celebrating its 20th anniversary in the west end.

Paul McGowan, the company director and owner, has now been working in the west end for over 30 years and is probably the longest standing I n d e p e n d e n t mortgage broker in the area. In fact he is known as one of the grandfathers of the mortgage industry in Glasgow.

Paul started as an independent financial adviser in 1987 after leaving Glasgow University, however 1989 he chose to specialise his career and focus on the mortgage market. In 1998 he took the big step to start his own company and opened up the Independent Mortgage Store on Byres Road proving to be busy from day one. Paul purposely kept the company small to give a boutique experience and ensure that clients always had the personal touch with great customer service. Laura Carson his office manager has been with the company right from the beginning and had an encyclopaedic memory for clients. She remembers everyone. Now 20 years on and after placing literally thousands of mortgages the company is busy assisting the children of their original clients.

Paul stated ‘’It proved a wise business model to keep the company small so we could focus on our clients.

In the 20 years I’ve been on Byres Road I’ve seen many changes with a huge turnover of companies accelerated in particular by the credit crunch 2007.

the years. Paul recalls when he started working in the west end you could buy a flat in Partick for £5,000 and specifically recalls the first flat in Hyndland selling for £30,000 with people being stunned that someone was willing to pay that much for a 1 bedroom property.

Mortgage interest rates have of course peaked and troughed over those years. On the 2nd November 2017 the Bank of England raised the base rate from 0.25% to 0.5% - the first rate rise in over a decade. It is likely to rise twice more over the next three years, according to Bank of England governor Mark Carney.

Key pieces for Spring Here’s what you really need to know about the key trends for Spring 2018 - they are super wearable!

This season, the quickest and easiest way to upgrade your look is to incorporate at least one of the following items into your wardrobe. Easy!

Pencil Skirts - again, like the trench, the pencil skirt is a clothes classic. Hailing from the 1950’s when femininity was at its peak, the modern pencil skirt is still sexy, but it has a slightly different cut this time round.

Spring must be around the corner!

If you read my column in the last edition of West End Life, you may recall the opening paragraphs were about how cold the winter had been and how unusual it was to see 4”/10cm of snow here at Cardwell Garden Centre in Gourock.

were exacerbated by us simply not being accustomed to this extreme weather. Personally, I have never seen snow that deep here, and certainly not the relentless blizzards we experienced.

Much like the rest of us, the plants in our garden are not used to the cold, eastern winds and the sheer weight of the snow lying on branches and foliage.

Even some of the mature trees around Gourock have been damaged.

There is not a lot we gardeners can do during this weather and the advice is to leave things alone until a thaw. Only then can you assess your plants and trees for damage.

Most mature trees and shrubs will have suffered only minor damage and will recover naturally once the spring and summer growing season gets underway. It is the same for lawns, they are quite weather resistant and can quickly recover under the right conditions, but avoid walking on the lawn when the soil is drenched.

Just a few weeks after that article was published, the aptly named ‘Beast from the East’ arrived in Scotland and promptly dumped 12”/30cm of snow on Cardwell!

Drifts of well over 2 feet saw both my 8 year old nephew, Sam, and my dog have great fun for a few days. If I am honest, I quite enjoy the snow as well.

what to do about spring flowering bulbs which they have planted prior to the ice and snow. Most bulbs, or corms, will be absolutely fine and will grow as normal once the soil warms up. The soil, and even the snow itself, acts as insulation for the bulb. If they do not flower this year, they should return to normal next year.

Daffodils at Cardwell that started to grow just before the cold snap have mostly recovered and many have even flowered. Snowdrops, as well, have flowered generously and provided a much needed burst of colour to an otherwise bleak landscape.

As I write this article in mid March, the next cold snap is due to strike over the coming weekend. The Met Office is predicting less disruptive weather this time, with more cold weather and wind than snow. By the time you read this you will know if they are right, or not.

I hope they are right and spring comes soon.

In the garden centre itself, we have an abundance of colourful plants that are able to withstand the cold nights and winds. Potted spring flowering bulbs and the old favourite primula are proving very popular.

Seeds, seed potatoes and onion sets are best bought now in preparation for planting and there is plenty of preparation of borders, planters and greenhouses that should be tackled soon.

As for spring and summer bedding plants, any you purchase now should be kept frost free and protected from cold winds.

Remember, April can still be a frosty month and even May can have cold nights.

SNP MP welcomes new talent to ‘Local Artists Project’ Mhairi Muir Patrick Grady MP is pleased to welcome Mhairi Muir as the latest artist to take part in his project to promote local creative talent in his constituency office.

Mhairi graduated with a BA in Art & Design in 2015 and has had a steady stream of exhibitions since, including the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute and Gallery Of Modern Art. She is also a member of Glasgow based art collective The Locale. Her work tends to focus on developing lens based art within her practice, going between photography techniques and video installation.

I am hugely influenced by the natural world.

Growing up in rural towns and villages across Scotland and beyond, I spent a lot of my time working with animals and exploring the outdoors.

From sea caves on pebble beaches to thick forests and woodland tracks, I still keep finding new places to venture to.

“The social constructs that surround and influence our daily life and how they are readily accepted by people also interest me and so I have found myself gravitating towards subjects like community and society.

“The form my work takes is typically that of video installation and photography. I have been utilising stop motion as an integral part of this, bringing the traditional paper animation technique together with a digital means of recording videos. I have also been exploring photography in both film and digital formats, and have been using old film camera lenses to create a dreamy, ethereal feel to my images.”

Patrick Grady said: “Mhairi illuminates the natural world, nature and form with a truly unique creative spirit, and I know that her art work will be enjoyed by anyone who passes by the constituency office. It’s a real pleasure to have Mhairi’s work on display, and I hope that her photographs and video installations will gain more notoriety from this exhibition.”

SRC University Tours The Students Representative Council run tours of the University from Tuesdays to Sundays at 2pm from the Visitor Centre. From 3rd of April an 11am tour will be available Tuesday through Sunday.

The Tour Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world.

Originally located on High Street in the city centre near Glasgow Cathedral, in 1870 it moved to the stunning collection of buildings perched upon Gilmorehill today, where it continues to watch over the bustling city and picturesque tenements of Glasgow’s West End. This walking tour will take you on a fascinating journey around some of the University’s most significant spots - from the atmospheric cloisters to the very same staircase Lord Kelvin would take from his house to his laboratory - whilst discovering the connections of James Watt, Adam Smith and Isabella Elder whose names are inscribed on the University’s Memorial Gates.
