Ready for Summer?

Victorian England’s modesty and decency laws dictated that women had to wear bathing garments made of heavy wool and these cumbersome clothes, as if not heavy enough were, quite unbelievably, weighted at the skirt hemline. Adding to the misery, women also had to wear leather shoes laced up to the knee - just to go for a swim at the beach! Needless to say - drowning was a pretty common occurrence.

Over in America, restrictions on swimwear eased somewhat, however, ‘Patrolmen’ would quite literally patrol beaches armed with a measuring tape and could fine or even arrest women who exposed too much of their calf.

Thankfully, things have moved on and we now only need to choose wisely with regard to what swimwear actually suits us. When choosing flattering swimwear, every body is unique, it’s important to be honest with ourselves - most people have areas that we would rather not have on full show. If that’s the case then get creative, there are now so many styles of bathing suits and bikinis that finding one that ticks all, or nearly all the boxes shouldn’t be too difficult.

If the tummy area is your weak spot then bold swimsuits with a reinforced tummy panel could be the answer, alternatively, supportive high waisted pants are another option. If you have a large bust, then opt for under wired support for the best look. You can create the illusion of longer legs by choosing swimwear that’s high cut and if you plan on doing

some actual swimming or beach sports when you are away then make sure you choose something more functional that can withstand the rigours of activity rather than something designed purely for sunbathing.

Incidentally, sports inspired swimwear is one of the top trends for this summer, along with belted styles, feminine frills and bold floral prints.

Perhaps the most important piece of beachwear clothing is the cover up.

This multi functional item is a wonderful addition to your holiday wardrobe.

Whether it’s a little lightweight, easy to wear dress, a sarong or an oversized scarf, the cover up really is invaluable. For the body conscious, a sarong is so versatile, tie it around your waist for a stylish way to camouflage your midriff, alternatively, tie it around your bust or neck for full body coverage. Some other uses include - a makeshift bag, as sun protection, a handy blanket or an emergency sling (hopefully never required, but good to be prepared)... The creative list goes on - just ask Google!

We go behind the scenes and interview Tom McD Luxuries, about one of the company’s latest projec Clyde Life: They really have extended their home.

How have they used the extra space?

Tom: They have used it to create more space for the kitchen layout and a comfortable, relaxing area with a sofa and television which sits nicely between the kitchen area and a separate dining area - all of which created an amazingly spacious, bright and airy open plan living space.

The kitchen design also catered for Neil and Marion’s young family. The design has incorporated two different heights of seating within the kitchen area. We have the breakfast bar with high stools at one end of the island and a lower table area with chairs at the other end cleverly integrated into the island.

THE Affordable Luxuries team have completed a stunning kitchen at the heart of a family home in Gourock and we asked Tom McDonald about the job.

Clyde Life: What was this client looking for in their new kitchen?

Tom: Neil and Marion asked us to design a modern, contemporary kitchen space along with a utility room, providing practical storage solutions along with modern functional appliances and accessories with various seating options. At the same time we had to pay attention to how the space functioned in relation to the other rooms off the kitchen. As you can see from the end result, it all works a treat.

The sofa also adds to this as the kids can play and watch TV while Mum and Dad can use the kitchen.

This neat solution provides seating options for both adults and kids allowing the entire family to use this wonderful space.

Clyde Life: How did your design help to maximise that feeling of light and space?

Tom: The main kitchen area opens out into a beautiful garden space via aluminium sliding doors which in turn flood the kitchen with light. The extension part of the kitchen also had a vaulted ceiling design which just added to the overall look of the finished

Clyde Life: This was not just a kitchen make-over, was it?

Tom: No, They were looking to extend their home and make this into a space not just for a kitchen but for the whole family to use. The customer had added an extension, removed some additional walls and relocated a cloakroom.

Tom: The cabinet colours are LK gloss stone grey and LK gloss crystal, with wall panels in white glass with a light grey timber. The wall panels and furniture really bring out the best in each other with this combination and the choice of the polished Blanco Norte coloured worktop brings it all together. This is a 20mm Quartzstone worktop from the Silestone range by Consentino.

The worktop looks off-white in tone, but if you look closer you see the most subtle speck running through it. Over all, the palette of colours used is very subtle whilst maintaining a sharp contemporary look with orange being the accent colour used by the client.

The rich light oak planked Karndean flooring also helps keep everything feeling light and airy and contrasts beautifully with the furniture. The original colour being considered by the client was quite a plain flat cream colour. I arranged for them to visit another customer of ours who had just installed the same floor. I knew it would be perfect for their colour scheme and when Neil and Marion saw it they both agreed and loved it.

It has given the client a thoughtful and elegant look to the finished project. They say they spend most of their time in this part of the house now Clyde Life: Please tell us about the choice of furniture.

Tom: The furniture chosen is from our German partner Pronorm, a range which is consistently popular with our customers. We like working with this brand, as the build quality is excellent and customers love the value for money it provides along with the wide range of cabinet options, colours and textures it has to offer.

The furniture chosen for this project was from our ProLine range.

Let’s Go Gardening!

It will be around the start of June when you read this article and it is time to go.

Go gardening.

The threat of frost is very small now and the warm weather during May has the garden coming to life at some pace.

In short, it’s growing season. It is time to get the bedding plants in, vegetable plants and summer salad greens underway and hanging baskets planted.

There are a few simple rules to successfully grow bedding plants.

Firstly, buy good quality plants. Poor quality plants may be cheaper, but be prepared to spend a few weeks nursing them to full strength. Bear in mind how short our season can be.

Cheaper plants are also more likely to have been grown outside Scotland. The problem with this is that they may not be able to withstand the colder nights we have here. At Cardwell almost all the bedding we sell is grown by ourselves or by our partners in Scottish nurseries. Because we have this control over the propagation and growing, we know they are strong, healthy plants and we stand by that quality.

Always plant bedding in new compost and make sure there is appropriate drainage.

Composts often come with fertiliser already added and some even have water retaining gel. The gel composts are ideal for containers and baskets and hold moisture in and around the roots.

Once the added fertiliser has been used up, you must add your own. Liquid or soluble feeds that are high in potash are best for bedding plants as they will act faster and promote flower growth over foliage. Granular fertilisers are best added when planting, mixed through the compost.

Please use the right fertiliser for the job and, despite what some TV shopping channels may say, there is not a fertiliser that is a ‘one stop’ solution for all round the garden.

If you are unsure, your garden centre must have a trained assistant available to help you choose the right one. They are there to help and there are no wrong or daft questions - most casual gardeners need help with this, so don’t be embarrassed.

Watering with a can or hose will make sure the soil gets drenched. If your plants are in flower try and water directly into the soil, not over the plants. If you have to water over the plants then it is best to use a rose or spray attachment for the hose, just to reduce the force of the water on the plants.

Be prepared for the odd plant to die. Bedding plants are young and fragile so they can get ‘shocked’ when first planted. This can happen with even the best quality plants, it is just natural that some will not make it. Predators, particularly slugs and snails, will do their best to eat your beautiful plants as well.

Finally, do not ignore your lawn. It is probably the largest planted area in your garden and will almost certainly take the most abuse. Feed it, kill any weeds or moss and trim it regularly. Watering the lawn will also have benefits and buying a lawn sprayer for the hose is a good investment.

Whatever the next two months bring, please take the time to enjoy your garden.

Which compost you choose is up to you, there is plenty of choice and it is not expensive.

Many of our customers take advantage of our cheap home delivery, bulk buying their compost and allowing our strong and healthy delivery driver to take the strain.

Don’t worry, he can handle it.

Most composts will still contain a high amount of peat. There should be details of how much peat they contain on the packaging, so if you want to use peat free compost make sure to check this.

Peat free compost has come a long way recently, the manufacturers being forced to improve their recipes as our industry moves towards phasing out peat use completely. However, peat free compost still cannot match their peat based competitors for growing performance.

By all means use peat free compost, but remember that in general peat free compost will not hold moisture as well or contain the nutrients found in peat itself. So you must water more frequently and add food as required.

Watering bedding plants daily is best, even when it rains. Rainwater will often sit on the top of the soil, but not reaching the roots where it is needed.

Power up for a powered down summer

This school holidays, make sunscreen the only screen your kids want as you teach them to get smart with smartphones I’m writing this very quietly, so don’t go reading it out loud because we don’t want them to panic but how about this plan for your kids: less screen-time this summer.

Strange isn’t it? We get all foodie about free-range, organic, sustainable, locally-sourced stuff we can put on their plates while they sit staring, dead-eyed into phones, tablets, i-Pads and games consoles. Maybe it is time to get some more natural stuff back into their heads as well as their bellies.

We have magnificent countryside on our doorsteps; fascinating historic towns and a truly great city with world-class exhibits. We are selling our kids short if they never get to sample them.

Reports are emerging of mobile phone separation anxiety disorders and ‘nomophobia’, described as: ‘a state of stress

caused by having no access to, or being unable, to use one’s mobile phone’. A study showed 58 per cent of smartphone users can’t go one hour without checking them. Do we really want our kids enslaved? It is time to unlearn some bad habits this summer.

These can be just basic, like a waterproof container with a logbook and pen to record your visit, or large container where you leave take a small token or item and leave one in return.

Star Gazing Download a map of the heavens. Wait for a dry, clear, night and pack groundsheets, torches and a midnight picnic with flasks of hot chocolate with a big bag of mini marshmallows on the side. Drive away from the street lights until you can see the stars. Park up, look up, be amazed.

GET ON YOUR BIKE! Inverclyde and the surrounding area is home to a wealth of cycle and walking tracks, ready to be explored by bike or on foot. All too often, many of us opt to travel by car, cancelling out the positives effects of cycling or walking for the body as well as the environment.

Last year, ‘Community Tracks Inverclyde’ was set up to raise awareness and encourage people to try the alternatives to driving the car, with support from the Climate Challenge Fund (part of Keep Scotland Beautiful), Smarter Choices, Inverclyde Community Development Trust and Inverclyde Council. Various activities and events such as group cycling tours, bike maintenance classes and pop up bike doctor events took place to help raise awareness of the project and get involvement from the local community.

RECIPE A quick and simple summery recipe perfect for Al Fresco dinner parties!

You will need: • 500g Custard – (We make our own but a little ‘Birds’ tells us that you can get really great stuff at your local supermarket!)

• Strawberry Jam • Strawberry or raspberry liqueur • 350g Madeira cake (Again, we make our own but in this weather the only baking you should be doing is to yourself out in the sun! pick one up when you are getting your custard) • 300ml Double cream • 1 punnet fresh strawberries • And five glasses to serve – we use whisky glasses but you choose!

Step 1 - ‘How does Bob Marley like his Madeira cake?’

Make sandwiches with the cake and the jam then cut into cubes.

Divide the cubes between your 5 glasses and drizzle over a little of your liqueur.

Step 2 - ‘Boozy berries’ Slice your strawberries and mix with a dash of your chosen booze! (Leave a few to the side for your garnish) Add them evenly to your glasses.

Step 3 – ‘Whip it good!’

Whip your cream in a good size bowl to minimise splashing Set aside for step 4 Step 4 – ‘Custards last step’ Spoon a generous layer of your beautiful home-made custard (wink wink) into your glasses then top with your whipped cream Plonk a whole strawberry on top et voila.
