Today’s Visitors: Oldham Athletic
Athletic started life as Pine Villa FC 120 years ago in 1895. They changed to the familiar name of Oldham Athletic in 1899 when local rivals Oldham County folded and Pine Villa moved into their stadium. Oldham were football league runners-up in 1914-15 but were relegated to the First Division in 1923. The start of the 90’s brought success back to Oldham with Athletic reaching the league cup final in 1990 and winning the Second Division title in 1991, ending a 98 year exodus from English football’s top tier. In the early 2000’s Oldham were brought into financial trouble and have resided in League One for a number of seasons, and have been through a number of managers in a push for promotion to the Championship. Paul Dickov brought great FA Cup success beating Liverpool at Boundary Park. Lee Johnson has recently left his post as Oldham manager and Darren Kelly is now spearheading Oldham Athletic’s 2015/16 campaign. There are currently ground development works at Boundary Park with the club building a new North Stand, with a capacity of over 2,500
Pride of Wythenshawe
Wythenshawe Town History…. Formed in 1946, and playing at Hough End Fields on Princess Road, Withington, Wythenshawe Town were originally known as North Withington FC, but were eventually re-named in 1987; after a few seasons at their new ground in Wythenshawe. The ground was named Ericstan Park as a tribute to Eric Reynard and Stan Orme who were prime movers in the club's early days. After a long period in the Lancashire and Cheshire League the club joined the Manchester League in 1974. In 2014, Wythenshawe moved from the Manchester League to the Cheshire League 2, a league with representatives from Altrincham, Witton Albion and West Didsbury & Chorlton. Wythenshawe Town Football Club senior section now has two teams in the Cheshire League, one in the Cheshire U21 League and one in the Manchester Sunday League. Lee McGregor took charge of the squad in the pre-season preceding the 2014/15 season and led them to Quadruple glory in his first season picking up the League Title, League Cup, Altrincham FA Senior Cup and the Manchester FA Amateur Cup in the season. The first team now play in the Cheshire League 1.

LEE MCGREGOR ‘Pride Of Wythenshawe’
Welcome back to Ericstan Park for what is surely going to be another exciting season at Wythenshawe Town FC A lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes, and that work started straight after the final whistle against Moore United. On the pitch we have been preparing the players for another long season and we are making sure they are going to be fully ready for the season ahead. With regards to new signings, we have a number of new faces who have joined the team this season, Wythenshawe has become an attractive place to play football with a great team, facilities and fan base. These signings will help push the squad further with added strength in specific positions but will also provide competition and drive the current players to step up their excellent performances just that bit more.
Onto today’s game then. Facing an opponent of this calibre will be tough. This Oldham Athletic XI will be physically and technically superb and what more can you expect from a professional outfit. It’ll be tough but that is exactly what you do in pre-season, is test yourself and this is the perfect opportunity. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to face Oldham today, it’s great for the club’s exposure. Hopefully people in the community really are getting interested by the game. So my thanks go to Oldham Athletic for bringing a side down today. I’ve been made aware that there are a number of Oldham Athletic fans making the trip today, so I hope you enjoy not only the game, but the facilities on offer. It’ll be great to have a big crowd to kick-off another big season ahead for the club.
Off the pitch, the work never stops. The club has received so much publicity from the local media, recently I’ve had the privilege to speak to our new community partner, Wythenshawe FM which is our local radio station. Also we’ve been featured on BBC Radio Manchester, nonleaguedaily.com, and Manchester Evening News.
The season ahead will provide some difficult matches, as teams in Cheshire League 1 have new managers such as Grappenhall Sports and Middlewich Town and we are wary of the threats they’ll pose. The cup competitions will also be a great opportunity for the club to prove ourselves against teams outside of the Cheshire League.
It’s been great to announce WFM as our community partner, we are looking to support local projects which look to provide something to the community similar to ourselves.
It’s a season for the whole club to push on from the junior section to the 1st Team. We want a developing club at all levels and the club is in the right place for that to start happening
Sponsorship has also been very popular in recent weeks and the launch of our new website is all very positive news for the club.

WTFC SECURE THE ELUSIVE 100% RECORD The squad travelled to Warrington knowing that a win would secure the unimaginable feat of a 100% record. Things started well when Remmi Williams slotted home to open the scoring. Not long after Moore United equalised from the penalty spot and Wilson had Moore United level. Just before half-time Ben Brooks had put Wythenshawe back ahead with his 47th of the season. Then just less than a minute later, Wythenshawe had won a penalty, Jason Walley dispatched and Town held a two-goal advantage at the break. The second half can only be called the Ben Brooks show, with the striker putting 4 past the despondent Moore United keeper. Those 4 goals propelled Brooks past the 50 goal mark and he had scored 51 goals in the 2014/15 season, a remarkable feat. Moore United were reduced to ten men prior to Brooks’ 50th goal from the penalty spot for an abysmal challenge in the box. 100% Record. Secured.

Welcome back to Ericstan Park for another exciting season of Cheshire League football. It’s fair to say we had an incredible season last season on and off the pitch and we’re looking to consolidate that going into this season in Cheshire League 1. It’s been a particularly interesting off-season for the club. Everyone was very excited for the new season after last season’s success and many people were keen to help out to give Ericstan Park a make-over. Also we are delighted to welcome new sponsors onto our books, with Medicines Evaluation Unit, Eden Creative and Lighting Motions joining us. They will provide great support for the club, which we are grateful for. The ground work will not slow up though, stands are due to go up in the next few months, along with the building of our brand new club shop which will house various pieces of Wythenshawe Town merchandise. Away from the ground, all of our volunteers have been working tirelessly to promote the club for this game and the new season. In addition to that we are delighted to launch the new website and see the revamp of this programme. On the pitch we are looking very prepared for the upcoming season where we kick-off the season against Tarporley Victoria on August 8th, we truly need the support of everyone in Wythenshawe to make this season another hugely memorable one. Those prices are £2 for Adults, £1 for Concessions and free for Under 16’s to give great value football that everyone can support. Chairman Kenny Hope had his say on the admission prices: “What we’ve done is give affordable prices to everyone in the community offering a price that can’t be beaten. We offer great facilities, friendly atmosphere and exciting football on the pitch. We are trying to cater for everyone, so they can support a football club without being put off by the price. With the rising prices at the top end of the sport, it’s time people really got behind their local teams where their hard earned cash is truly appreciated.
Families won’t be forking out over £100 just to watch football. Here the whole family can watch 90 minutes of football, have a drink, pie, programme and they still won’t be approaching that ridiculous figure. We are a community club and that’s exactly who we’re making this club for. There have been new additions to the Cheshire League for the 2015/16 season. These come in the form of Unicorn Athletic, Halebank and FC St Helens. These teams will compete in Cheshire League 2 in the upcoming season. Unicorn Athletic join the league from the Altrincham and District League where they finished 3rd in division two behind Altrincham Hale and Broadheath JFC. They will be playing their home games at Valley Road in Flixton, a floodlit venue which used to be home to Northwich Victoria and the recently renamed Northwich Manchester Villa. Halebank move to the Cheshire League after winning the Warrington & District Premier Division comfortably by 13 points ahead of Windle Labour Club.

We also welcome FC St Helens to the Cheshire League two. FC played in the West Cheshire League 3rd Division last season finishing 6th, 20 points off the leaders Kirkby Town Railway. They play their home games at Windleshaw Sports Ground. Lastly we have Litherland REMYCA who ply their trade in the NWCFL Division 1, they’ll be fielding a development side which will play in Cheshire League 2 In addition to that Mersey Valley will be fielding a Reserve side in the Cheshire Reserves League 2 in which WTFC reserves currently play. We face Halebank and Unicorn Athletic in the J A Walton Challenge Cup Group stage. We are also playing Unicorn this pre-season, as on July 28th we have them in a friendly at Partington

Ben Brooks
Ben Brooks had an incredible season scoring 51 goals in the 2014/15 season. He reflected on the season just gone and looks at life in Cheshire League 1. “I was delighted to get over 50 goals in the season and was still confident prior to the Moore United game despite still being sat on 46 goals. We had some great performances last season, ripping apart some teams and we have the belief and the team that could do that again. We have a cracking team and every single player has contributed immensely to the season, and the team work and ethic was the main reason for the quadruple. Next season will be important for the club as we strive for promotion to the Cheshire Premier Division which would be a great test for the team. We do have a tough league to come up against next season.
I’m sure that Altrincham Reserves will be keen to push us more this season, and along with that, other teams have new managers and players so it could be an incredibly open season. What will be important for us as well next season will be the cup competitions. Everyone in the team is particularly keen to retain the J A Walton Challenge Cup and that will be no easy feat especially with a tough group stage including Cheshire League new boys Unicorn Athletic and Halebank. The pre-season preparation has gone well and we’re ready to approach this season again with the hard working mentality that won us many games last season. We’re confident of success and we need all the fans to get behind us this season home and away”. Ben Brooks

East play at the Wright Robinson College in Gorton. It’s a free admission match, so get down to Gorton to support the side in another important pre-season friendly as the 1st XI prepare for another season in the Cheshire league. It’s a 14:30 kick-off and the postcode for the ground is M18 8RL.
Lee McGregor has his say on the pre-season fixture, “This game will serve as important preparation trying different players and formations. Using opportunities like this is pivotal for the season as we want to be 100% ready for the coming season, and when it comes to Tarporley Victoria on August 8th, we won’t want to be trying out new players and tactics.
