Information on walking grades
To help you decide which is the walk for you. Wherever possible an approximate time and terrain guide has been given for each walk.
Terrain guide
Please note our Health Walks are graded from All to Moderate, most being Easy. Other walks vary. * All – relatively flat, surfaced paths, no stiles, suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, may include road crossings. * Easy – relatively level ground, fields, lanes and tracks, possibly with some gentle slopes, stiles or livestock. * Moderate – uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some moderate slopes, expect stiles/ livestock. * Hard – uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some steeper climbs, expect stiles/livestock. * Very Hard - limited paths, rough walking, steeper climbs, expect stiles/livestock. * T - Tramper - suitable for people using trampers (see below for hire details).
Poor weather
Please note a Ranger/Leader will be available at the start of an activity whatever the weather. In extreme conditions a decision will be taken on the day by the leader and the group whether or not to cancel.
Important information * * * * * * * * * * *
When attending an activity please take the advice of the leader. We reserve the right to refuse to take people on activities if we feel they are unsuitably equipped for the activity. If you intend to leave the event early inform your leader for your own safety. Please come dressed to match the type of activity and be prepared for all weather conditions even if the sun is shining with appropriate footwear and waterproof clothing. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of all walks to allow for registration, putting boots on, etc. The finish times of the events/activities are approximate, please let the leader know if you need to return for a certain time at the start of the activity. If you cannot attend an activity that you are booked on, if possible, let the leader or Visit Garstang staff know in good time so if there are reserves on the list they can be given the chance to attend the walk. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on guided walks unless stated. This is because some of the activities cross farmland containing livestock or nature reserves with nesting birds. Dogs are allowed on the health walks and legstretchers, but dogs must be kept under close control at all times and on a lead on request by the leader, and you must clean up after them. Please bring a drink particularly on the longer walks Bring any medication you may need during the activity (eg. inhaler). For some activities there may be things, such as binoculars, camera, etc. to bring with you. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. If you have any medical conditions that the activity leader should know about, please mention this at the start of the activity. Check with your GP or health practitioner before you take part. Make sure you bring any medication you are taking with you on any walk or activity. Our health walks are a good starting point for people recovering from ill health.
Walking Wyre is a health walk programme run by the Wyre Coast and Countryside Service of Wyre Council. All health walks are free, usually one hour walks (approximately two miles), and everyone is welcome no matter what their age or ability. You don’t need to book. We have a variety of walks graded from easy to moderate on the coastal promenades and along countryside paths, they run throughout the year with an average of three walks a week led by our trained volunteer walk leaders. If one hour is a bit too long for you, our health walk leaders can help by starting you off at a gentle amble at 30 minutes. Please let the leader know if you would find this helpful when you join the group. 30 minute walks will be available from Fleetwood, Cleveleys and the Wyre Estuary Country Park, these will start the same time as the one hour health walks – please see * adjacent to the listing. All walk times are approximate, dependent upon the pace of walkers. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the walk for a prompt departure, as it will be necessary for each new customer to complete a health questionnaire. On some of the routes we can book a Tramper (off-road motorised wheelchair) for you to use, but we will need a week’s notice to book a tramper onto a health walk. Each month we offer a 2 hour Legstretcher which are charged at £3.50 for adults and £2.50 for concessions – please see the £ adjacent to the listing. May
