Fisherman’s Friend
Fisherman’s Friend lozenges were created in 1865 by James Lofthouse, a pharmacist from Fleetwood. He originally made a menthol and eucalyptus liquid to help local fishermen soothe their throats while working in the harsh North Atlantic. However, the liquid was difficult to use at sea, so Lofthouse developed it into small lozenges, which became known as “Fisherman’s Friends”.
For years, the lozenges remained a local remedy, but by the 1960s, they gained international recognition due to their strong, effective relief from coughs and sore throats. Global demand grew, and Fisherman’s Friend began exporting to countries around the world.
Despite its global success, Fisherman’s Friend remains family-owned and is still produced in Fleetwood, where it provides jobs and maintains a strong connection to its origins. Today, the brand offers various flavours and sells in over 120 countries, while still being recognised for its powerful menthol formula.
