Mike Curuchet
Once again the Wyoming Wool Growers Association, our board, our sponsors, and I personally, would like to welcome you to what has always been, and promises to be this year, one of the elite ram sales to be held anywhere in this country.
When you look at the consignment list and see so many seed stock producers who have been here and bringing such a consistent set of rams for many years, you know the odds are in your favor to have a great sale. Newer consignors are also representing some outstanding programs and it’s always exciting to see new and different genetics and also some new faces. We thank you consignors. It’s fun to have ‘em here.
Equally crucial to this sale, we’d like to thank all of you people who come here to buy these rams. We welcome you and we appreciate your knowledge and discretion and sincerely hope that you leave here with exactly what you were looking for to improve or maintain the quality of so many great sheep herds.
As I’m writing this the lamb market is slipping some but as of now is still what we’d call “livable”. We’ll sure be hoping for everyone’s sake that it finds some footing and at least stays steady. I’ve seen some articles that say there are rumblings of China’s economy starting to get a little better so hopefully that will eventually be good news for our wool market. It seems such a shame that we have to depend on another country to maintain the market on such an extraordinary and versatile product.
As often as not, it seems like our greatest payment in this business is the ability to do what we love with a group of people we love.
As always, we wish you the very best of luck on your lamb and wool sales and we ask for God’s joys and blessings on all of you and your sheep operations.
Best Regards,
Mike Curuchet Wyoming Wool Growers President
Alison Crane, Ph.D.

The Wyoming Wool Growers Association (WWGA) was formed more than 100 years ago by wool growers who wanted to provide a voice for producers. Today, the WWGA is one of the foremost agricultural organizations in the state and garners respect and admiration at a national level.
We work to enhance and protect the lamb and wool industries in Wyoming while preserving Wyoming’s western lifestyle and our industries rich contribution to it.
Producers are busy, so we serve as the watchman for those livestock producers who may not have the time or resources to follow many of the issues facing the industry. We provide our members with information on:
• Education & Research Developments
• Legislative & Regulatory Issues
• Marketing & Promotion Opportunities
• Ways to Protect & Enhance the
• Environment and Wyoming’s Renewable Natural Resource Base
Our members are the foundation of the WWGA. Membership gives strength to the Association and to Wyoming’s sheep industry. Anyone engaged in the production of sheep, wool, goats, or livestock (directly or indirectly) is eligible for membership in the Association upon payment of the prescribed dues. Membership is also available to any person or entity committed to supporting the purposes and objectives of the Association. Our priority is good communication and interaction with our members. Members receive a monthly update containing news of the Association, industry activities, and state/federal issues of importance to sheep procuers. Visit the website, ww.wyowool.com, Facebook, and Instagram pages which are updated regularly and are great ways to keep up with what’s going on- don’t forget to follow us! Other member benefits include participation in WWGA activities, ability to consign to sales, advertise, access to archived meeting materials and newsletters on the website.

7.3 The minimum scrotal circumference for yearling rams must be 34 cm and for lambs, 31 cm.
7.4 ALL rams consigned to this sale shall have tested negative for B. Ovis by means of a ELISA BLOOD TEST WITHIN 30 DAYS OF THE SALE or originate from a currently enrolled B. Ovis CERTIFIED-FREE FLOCK.
a. All consignments must be accompanied by a copy of the B. Ovis lab test results form or, in the case of animals from a B. Ovis certified free herd, proof of current compliance and active participation in the B. Ovis certified free program.

c. We do not accept statements of B. Ovis status as simply noted on veterinary health certificates. The ELISA Blood Test is an accepted method of checking for epididymitis; however, it should not be considered to be a 100% guarantee of freedom from the disease.
7.5 All out-of-state sheep consigned to the sale must obtain an entry permit number (obtained from the Wyoming Livestock Board by calling 307-7777515). 7.7. It is RECOMMENDED that all rams receive a breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) of the semen for abnormalities.
7.8 The WWGA strongly believes that extreme docking (complete tail removal) is not an acceptable animal husbandry practice and should be eliminated. The WWGA has also stated its support for prohibitions against the allowance of animals which have been “short docked” at ALL exhibitions and sales throughout the country. It is strongly recommended that sheep be docked in such a manner that the tail is no shorter than one-half (1/2) inch in length, recognizing that most respected experts recommend a dock which results in at least a 1” tail.
7.9 THE STATE RAM SALE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS AND ENCOURAGES THAT ALL RAMS CONSIGNED TO THE SALE BE ACCOMPANIED WITH A GENETIC TEST WHICH DESCRIBES THEIR RAMS GENETIC CHARACTERISTICS AT CODON 171. GENETIC TESTING OF CODON 171 HAS BEEN POSITIVELY SHOWN TO BE AN EXTREMELY
7.10 THE SIFTING COMMITTEE WILL CHECK ALL SHEEP FOR SOUNDNESS AND FREEDOM FROM DISEASE AND WILL HAVE AUTHORITY TO REJECT ANY SHEEP THAT, IN THEIR ESTIMATION, ARE UNSOUND OR DISEASED OR DOES NOT MEET THE SHEARING QUALIFICATIONS. Selling or giving away sifted sheep during the sale or on the grounds will be prohibited and sifted sheep cannot be replaced for the sale. Standards of health and soundness are for the benefit of the seller and the buyer as well as the integrity of the sale.
7.11 Sifted rams must be removed from the barn immediately following the sifting.
Identification of superior genetics that are of economic importance to the U.S. sheep industry has long been cited as a goal of high importance. Most industry analysts and experts agree, there are two primary areas that should be further investigated. In general terms, these are: (1) feedlot efficiency and performance; and, (2) increased muscling & decreased fat cover of market animals.
The advent of value-based marketing and increased emphasis on carcass quality and tenderness have brought about a paradigm shift in genetic selection of most species of livestock.
In other livestock species, the use of “central performance tests” has become the norm for evaluating economic factors such as rate of gain, feed efficiency, and genetic growth characteristics of importance to the industry.
In 2001, the WWGA recognized the need for, and benefits derived from a Centralized Ram Performance Test (CRPT) focused on the specific needs of the value-added and retail segments of the lamb industry. After carefully evaluating the existing CRPTs, the WWGA collaborated with the UW Department of Animal Sciences to set about developing a new, industry driven, CRPT housed at the UW Animal Science Research facility in Laramie, WY.
