Time for fun and games – close to home

H

ere comes a long, sunny summer – we hope… And one thing is certain – this summer will see the biggest effort the town has witnessed for a long time to make it a place for fun and entertainment.

The long-gone carnival is back again and as Wymondham turns on a seasidestyle event the prospects are looking good for proving it can entertain both young and old. Read all about it on pages 10-13.

The Music Festival, too, may look high-brow in part - since there is a big audience for live performances presenting the works of great composers - but the festival offers much more than this. Just take a look at the vast variety of music detailed in our feature on pages 14-16.

These highlights of Wymondham’s summer will head a multitude of fetes, fairs and other fun – many events raising much-needed funds for charities. While the big city down the road may have bigger and bolder events it’s what we do closer to home that will enrich our local community most.

ith all the local high quality am-dram on tap close to home – not to mention the professional stuff down the road at the Theatre Royal I feel a bit of a traitor admitting to have enjoyed a West End trip to see One Man, Two Guvnors.

The least I can do is mention that the hit show is back in Norfolk this autumn (Nov 24-29) with the top-flight cast at the Theatre Royal. hat thorny business of pigeon poo cropped up again at Wymondham’s annual parish meeting. The bird menace at the entrance to the car park off Market Street seems beyond any solution but, truth be told, it does not give a good impression to visitors.

As big efforts are being made this summer to encourage more people into the town centre there’s a crying need for an innovative solution...

With both the music festival and, once again, a carnival in the offing we need to make sure everything is smartened up.

I

t’s a way of life in warmer climes - the pavement café offering from early morn to dead of night an array of alcoholic drinks. But in Wymondham the rules are a bit different….

But what vision does the idea conjure up… A peaceful scene of relaxed shoppers sipping a glass of wine in the sunshine or of drunken yobs running amok with lager cans to the fore…

Here there’s strict regulations restricting the serving of alcohol in the street and the Cross Keys, for one, has been battling in vain to get permission for tables outside its frontage.

Do we need to relax the long long arm of the licensing laws?

Or do we ere on the side of caution and maintain a Keep Wymondham Dry philosophy?

Good news about the meadow – at last

A

t last – some good news about Kings Head Meadow. The town council is going ahead with the redevelopment of the children’s play area. And Ketts Park children will be in the running for a play area next year.

After all the wrangling over the meadow’s future here’s a welcome move – but the struggle to improve the football club’s facilities there continues and needs all the support the town can muster.

We’re all off to the seaside next month – without leaving Wymondham!

The much heralded return of Wymondham Carnival after a long, long absence will see Middleton Street and Market Street posing as a traditional seaside pier, lined with stalls and attractions and leading to a large stage on the Market Place for the “End of the Pier show”.

This stage will play host to the final 10 acts of Wymondham's Got Talent which began with auditions through February and March leading to live show 'heats' in the final weeks up to Carnival Day on Saturday, July 26th.

After months of planning led by the Wymondham Business Group the town is set for a bumper event featuring all the classic seaside attractions… donkey rides…live music… buskers…Punch and Judy…ice cream…comedy… - not forgetting the hog roast, fireworks - and a grand parade through the town.

he question of resurrecting the Carnival came about at the very first meeting the Mayor, Cllr. Dianne Fernee called back in the early part of 2013 to discuss the problems that face retailers in the town centre.

When I asked the councillors present why there was no Carnival in a town like ours, I was told that the main problem was one of public liability insurance costs for the floats. Vehicles and processions do not mix I was told.

After the formation of the Wymondham Business Group,

we decided early on that bringing back events to the town centre was key to regenerating footfall and instrumental in engendering a sense of community amongst the local residents.

It was vital that we overcame the obstacles that at first view appeared to prevent many of our ideas from getting off the ground and so we put together a committee to see if there was enough of a will to get the Carnival up and running for the following year.

That committee of just a handful of people has met every week since December and our first few evenings were just sharing ideas and trying to outline the framework to which we

It is nearly two decades since the town witnessed a classic carnival which until then had been a high spot in the town’s calendar.

The walking carnival parade, which will include the winner of the town’s carnival queen competition, will start at 2pm from Back Lane and will make its way to the Market Place where fun and entertainment will be the order of the day.

Wymondham’ s first carnival was in 1936 and this is the first carnival queen, Lily Lee with her atten dants.

could then develop.

Very soon we decided that if people and vehicles don’t mix, then we needed to remove one or the other, and so logically our walking procession was suggested. We considered potential venues, and various themes, but each venue had its own set of issues and the main aim all along was to increase footfall to our town centre.

When we looked at the layout of the Market Place, Market Street and Middleton Street it was just a throwaway comment that it could be made to seem like a seaside pier with the Market Cross at the end.

A five-minute brainstorming session later Wymondham-on-sea had been

born! The idea of a walking procession from Back Lane to Town Green onward through Middleton St, Market St and on to the Market Place with an End of Pier Show and fireworks as a finale had been decided upon.

We are convinced that events such as the Carnival must be part of the town calendar, just as the Music Festival has become a firm favourite, so we’d like the Carnival to be an automatic inclusion. The Dickensian Steampunk Fayre has reinvented itself, and although some were at first concerned about the theme, it was a genuine success and the team who delivered it under the Lions banner are again building on their knowledge to make this year’s event bigger and better.

“A Day to Remember” which celebrates the community clubs and associations will again celebrate Wymondham’s increasingly important status as a Dementia Friendly community in September.

Yes it’s true that these events will undoubtedly help in swelling the coffers of a number of tills on the day, but they are also family events, and the whole community will benefit from coming together and just having a bit of fun, celebrating what we Brits do best.

Contest uncovers a whole wealth of local talent As the Wymondham’s Got Talent competition nears its finale - a highlight of this year’s carnival - Business Group chairman DAVID DISNEY describes how the idea has come to life…

T

he whole idea of Wymondham’s Got Talent came from the busking day at the music festival last year. I was struck by the amount of local artists I saw and thought what a great idea it would be to provide a platform to showcase and develop all this budding talent we have in our area.

Linking this to the Carnival and providing a contest that would engage support from the local community by way of live shows was the natural progression, and I'm pleased to say that the whole thing has snowballed from there.

When the Business Group committee were discussing the desire for events throughout the year, it was obvious that most were heavily dependent on the weather.

I thought that having a competition like a talent show that could be started early in the year, with auditions, live shows, semi-finals and finals and so on, would be a great way to engage people throughout the year irrespective of

the weather. Fortunately the other directors of the Group indulged me, and have given their support!

It’s not exactly re-inventing the wheel is it? The format for the whole thing has been so brilliantly developed by Simon Cowell that all we had to do was adapt it for our own purposes and get some key people in place.

We’ve been very lucky… We’ve got superb graphics and publicity material from KSD Associates, auditions and meetings hosted by the Green Dragon, and Wymondham High and lots of their staff have provided great support plus the venue for the live shows.

Tony from J.P.'s has provided the refreshments for the live shows and any profits are returned to the Carnival fund.

The closed auditions were in front of just four judges and allowed for a fair bit of constructive feedback in order to help and advise the contestants. The live shows are a bit different; here they are required to perform on stage to both the judges and a larger audience made up of the general public as well as friends and family, so there's a bit more pressure and this enables the judges to see not only who are the best performers, but who will ultimately have the presence and personality to make it through to the final.

ymondham’s public lavatories may get a modern make-over. Plans are being made to install hi-tech equipment for automatic cleaning that will include a mechanism to wash the floors and clear away rubbish.

Consultations with local residents will take place before any decision is made.

House prices still under 2007 levels

H

ouse prices in East Anglia has risen 9.5 per cent in the last year, according to the Nationwide house price index. But according to the report prices are still several percentage points below their 2007 high, Norwich – and Cambridge – lead the upward trend.

Development plans get formal approval

P

lans for housing over the next 12 years – following detailed public consultation procedures – now have the formal approval of South Norfolk District Council and details are available on the council’s website.

Wymondham’s allocation is 2200 homes – many of which are already accounted for.

…but its No to Suton Lane development

T

he planners have turned down a scheme for 385 homes and a two-form entry primary school on the outskirts of the town. The development was planned for land between Suton Lane and London Road. The town council had supported the plan.

What has surprised us all is just how good the standard of the contestants has been. There's going to be a lot of competition for those last few places and a chance to perform at the Carnival, so I can tell you the judges will have some very difficult decisions to make. We really hope that the public will get behind us and come out and support the shows, and also pay tribute to the bravery of these contestants, many of whom who are on stage for the first time.

he troubled Wymondham Football Club has appointed a new committee to turn round the club’s fortunes. Around 70 people attended a special general meeting and now efforts are in hand both to improve the club’s financial situation and improve facilities.

T

apas evenings are to be launched at the Lemon Tree as the town centre café endeavours to tempt people away from the evening attractions of Norwich to sample what’s on offer much closer to home. The café now has a drinks licence and plans to open several evenings each week.

Celebrating all things musical - the festival is here again Wymondham’s Music Festival Fortnight returns from Saturday, June 21 to Sunday, July 6, with more than 30 events, some organised by other groups, many of them free, in venues across town.

Here’s a glimpse of the treats in store…

njoy performances by national, regional and local musicians with everything from Schumann, Debussy, Beethoven and JS Bach to Americana, English folk, swing, jazz, flamenco, bluegrass, African, Balkan, Gypsy and Indian music and contemporary composers and singersongwriters.

Festival Fortnight kicks off at 10am on Saturday, June 21 with Around the World Through Music and Dance, a new free family event in Wymondham Abbey and churchyard. Enjoy Moxy Garbanzo playing Eastern European tunes and Sokoshumba performing colourful African music on mbira, hosho and djembe. There’ll be Bollywood and Indian classical dancing and Strictly Flamenco, along with Adrian Palka’s Sound Table.

Other Abbey events include the vibrant Bella Tromba – jazz, classical and early English music (June 21); Joy and James Lisney (June 26), cello and piano featuring Schumann, Debussy and Beethoven; Collegium (June 28), a new Baroque ensemble performing Telemann and Bach and The Goldman Ensemble (July 2) recreating their 2008 piano recital

at St Martin-in-the-Fields, which they presented without their pianist who was stuck in traffic. Enjoy an evening full of comedy, theatre and music from Bach to Joplin.

There’s also a programme of lunchtime recitals at the Abbey and a special performance by Matthew Schellhorn of Ian Wilson’s new piano masterpiece, ‘Stations’ (June 29), to celebrate the Abbey’s new icons of the Stations of the Cross.

And on July 3 at the Abbey, it’s ‘Of Night And Light And The Half Light’ with John Law piano and Iain Ballamy saxophone, exploring the ground hovering between classical and jazz using contemporary groove-based rhythms and contemplative music.

Effective and affordable platform for advertisers

Students lend weight to the ‘Shop in Wymondham’ campaign Students from Wymondham High have been joining in the efforts to promote town centre businesses as part of the district council’s Market Towns Initiative.

B

usiness Studies students brought a splash of colour to the Wymondham Market Place and to the farmers market with activities including music and dance, food sampling, a prize draw and promotional give-aways.

This was part of their project to encourage local residents to shop and support the stores in town as well as the farmers’ market.

The students were busy in the run up to the event researching why people do or do not shop in the town. They found some residents in the surrounding housing areas have never been into the town and use out

of town supermarkets and the nearby city. Others use the coffee shops and restaurants but do not step over the threshold of the other traders.

The students were tasked with creating a street fest to drive people into town and used a variety of media channels to get their messages out.

The students were surprised at the choice of retail therapy available locally and decided they would be using the shops themselves in the future.

isitors to the Wymondham High street fest were treated to music and a hamper prize draw which involved collecting names and addresses and messages of support from visitors to the town. Many of the visitors had picked up on the event from marketing activity the students delivered, including a radio interview on BBC Norfolk.

One of the students involved in the initiative to promote the town, Rebecca O’Callaghan, said it had been a great experience. “ Seeing everyone's hard work pay off was satisfying as the events were really successful due to the great turnout of people,” she said. “We had a great time and hope we have managed to help make people aware of Wymondham and all that it offers.”

The project is part of South Norfolk Council’s Market Towns Initiative which brings together resources and expertise to support the Market Towns of Diss, Harleston, Loddon and Wymondham. Martin Wilby, deputy leader of the council said: “South 20

Keeping pace with Wymondham’s growth

Remarkable war story revealed in Norfolk family’s new book

A

new book out this month tells of the dramatic exploits of a Polish youngster who after the war started a new life based in our part of Norfolk.

Joe Podolski was captured by the Russians when they invaded Poland in September 1939 with the stated aim of protecting Russian citizens living in the country. A familiar refrain!

Joe’s story is too involved and remarkable to recite here.

Suffice to say he survived 23 days on Death Row (hence the book’s title “23 Days”) and it includes amazing accounts of escape from prison, returning to Russia as an intelligence officer and eventually becoming a fighter pilot based at Coltishall.

Joe married a Norfolk girl and died in 1999 but his family have developed the roots he finally laid down here and the book is compiled from recollections he penned throughout his incredible life by his grandsons, Jeffrey and Jeremy.

Both followed Joe into flying by joining 1986 Squadron ATC, based in Pople Street in Wymondham in which they spent many happy years.

Joe became naturalised after the war and set up home in Norwich, running a business on Ipswich Road where he made garden fencing, fibreglass boats and repaired gliders.

In 1959 he was a founder member of the Norfolk Gliding Club based at Tibenham and was then their Chief Flying Instructor for 25 years. During this time he also set up a jewellers shop at St Andrew’s Hill in Norwich (The Little Shop) and ran it before handing it over to his elder son in the 1970’s.

Following a stroke he retired to a bungalow in Mulbarton and then to sheltered housing in the village, Hanover Gardens, where he lived until he died.

Drama students get glimpse of wartime traumas

They were told about the setting of the play before watching the production and learning something of drama techniques and ways of entering the acting profession.

The play tackles the issues facing soldiers who have suffered lifechanging injuries in Afghanistan.

It follows them from the battlefield through the hours and days after injury through to the physio rooms of Headley Court where military personnel start their physical rehabilitation, with each role played by a soldier who has actually experienced the same life-changing situation for real.

Here’s what three 14-year-old students thought of the experience: Megan Smith I think today’s visit showed me that people in the Army do get hurt and they can die. It is depressing but that is the reality for them. People can lose those they are close to.

I am glad they put humour into the talk as well.

I have learned a lot from today.

he scrapping of plans to merge Norfolk and Suffolk police control rooms will mean cuts in Norfolk’s front line force, according to police commissioner Stephen Bett. Mr Bett had backed the money-saving scheme but the Suffolk commissioner opposed plans to centralise the control room at Wymondham.

he new Mayor of Wymondham is county councillor Colin Foulger. He was elected to step up from the role of Deputy Mayor by the town council, who also voted for retiring Mayor Dianne Fernee to swap roles with him and become Deputy Mayor.

Library service to cut mobile visits

lans are going ahead to cut back on the county council’s mobile library service. In a costcutting exercise visits are likely to be limited to once a month.

The move would save over £100,000.

£175,000 budget to provide play equipment at two Wymondham sites has been approved by the town council.

Kings Head Meadow equipment will be installed later this year and more than half the money earmarked for Ketts Park equipment next year.

More housing plans in the pipeline

lans have been submitted for 300 new homes off Norwich Common and 90 off Tuttles Lane East, which will involve a move for the rugby club to farmland off Melton Road. A decision on the plans is expected by August.

hrough the Localism Act, the Government aims to give power back to people and communities – reducing bureaucracy and making it easier for local authorities to work with their communities and to make things better.

Over the last couple of years the Neighbourhood Boards at South Norfolk Council has been the catalyst to deliver the aims of the Act. We have strived through continually evolving the structures and membership of the Tiffey Valley Neighbourhood Board to best meet the needs of the residents and address local issues in and around Wymondham.

We continue to encourage local communities, individuals and relevant organisations to influence and improve services that more closely reflect their local needs.

Our plans for the coming year, to be ratified by Cabinet and Full Council at South Norfolk Council will see local Councillors taking even more of a lead in local delivery and enablement.

Members and residents of South Norfolk will now have access to three different funds to stimulate and promote development. This new way of working will ensure a swift and less bureaucratic response so that

nder the proposals each of the five Neighbourhood Board Chairmen will be responsible for the management of an annual budget of £25000, known as the Community Action Fund, it is there to stimulate economic growth, assist local partnerships and communities to improve and grow.

The second new fund is a Member's Ward Budget where £1000 will be devolved to each Councillor to allow flexible and timely funding of small initiatives at a very local level.

The criteria for this fund is very similar to the Community Action Fund but the minimum payment that can be made through this scheme will be £100, thus enabling assistance to very small projects and community events.

The third fund is not new and known to many as the Neighbourhood Fund, this funding stream is well recognised, understood and utilised.

In the last financial year 40 separate grants were awarded across South Norfolk from this fund totalling just short of £80000. It will remain unchanged and it allows groups to apply for up to £2000 to assist them to meet their needs or aspirations.

South Norfolk Council is one of the few council's nationally that still offers community grants and I hope you will agree with me that this process offers substantial help to all the volunteers, groups and charities who strive to make Wymondham and the surrounding parishes an even better place to live.
