The Midland Bull Test, located in Columbus, Mont., is home to the largest feed efficiency testing program in North America, offering producers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to develop and market high-quality, “total performance” seedstock.
At Midland, nearly 1,100 purebred bulls from over 200 consignors representing more than 32 states, are tested each year in the fall during a 112-day performance test.
The test collects data on average daily gain, weight per day of age, ultrasound, feed efficiency and breeding soundness, and the top 80 percent of bulls are sold in the Final Sort Sale April 4-5.
“Midland Bull Test consistently tops sales across the U.S. and boasts a large number of repeat sale buyers who assert loyalty to proven results year after year,” reads the website.
“Midland Bull Test consignors reap the ben-
efits of total performance bull development. There is no such thing as a gain race here at Midland. We set the bulls up on a level playing field and let them walk the walk,” it continues. “Our facilities and program are designed and built to emphasize the development of calves into sound, functional bulls, ready to go to work.”
History of the test
Midland Bull Test was started in 1962 by Leo McDonnell, Sr. and a small group of purebred breeders.
According to the website, the concept of weighing and measuring cattle, then publishing the data was not met favorably by most of the purebred industry.
“However, under this constant pressure from the opponents of performance, Midland Bull Test, the Montana Beef Performance Association and several staunch seedstock producers continued to define,
refine and promote performance as a primary tool in managing the profitability of a cow herd,” the website reads.
Current operations
Today, Midland Bull Test is one of the most trusted testing programs in the nation and a quality source of seedstock for cattle producers.
The test continues to place an emphasis on balanced performance and collect data with the utmost attention and care.
Over the last few decades, Midland has collected as much – if not more – ultrasound data than any other location in the country, according to the website. Ultrasound data is collected in accordance with guidelines developed by the Ultrasound Governance Committee, which oversees ultrasound matters for the U.S. Beef Breeds Council.
Ultrasound images are submitted to UltraInsights, a
centralized ultrasound processing lab, and data is submitted for all bulls enrolled in their respective breed association’s performance program.
Additionally, Midland Bull Test gathers efficiency data using a GrowSafe System known as Vytelle, which measures the feed efficiency of each individual bull.
An electronic identification tag tracks feed consumption, which is used to calculate residual feed intake – a correlation of the pounds of gain to pounds of intake, and therefore, the increment cost of gain.
Bulls at Midland are also required to pass a thorough breeding soundness exam, including extension, motility and morphology.
“Such a special bull comes out of Midland Bull Test because of all of the selection pressure,” shares Leo McDonnell, Jr. in an AngusTV YouTube video celebrating Midland’s 50th
anniversary. “There is nowhere else in the world where producers can find bulls through such a strict criteria process.”

EPD – Expected Progeny Difference: The prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database.
M – MILK: A predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is a part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Eff – Efficiency: Optimizes balance between performance and efficiency. It measures how efficiently the caloric content of feed is converted to pounds.

Dear Friends, There is a lot I don’t know and a lot I learn every day but one thing I am certain of nobody wants these bulls, these consignors and these buyers to succeed more than all of us at Midland Bull Test.
Receiving always brings a few sleepless nights, as many calves arrive bawling and missing their moms for the first few days. We do a lot of babysitting and comfort in those weeks.
Steve begins his assessments early, monitoring arrival condition, diving into vaccination history and prepping for illness prevention as he assembles the new mixed herd. After a few weeks to destress and stabilize, we begin pro-
What are the criteria for distinguishing animals held in high regard?
I remember the oldfashioned way. Recognition only came through progeny – consistent sons and daughters proving those genetics in production. These days, many operations are captivated by “fresh, cuttingedge” genetics from animals that haven’t had time to prove themselves.
In true American fashion, we have lost reliability in trying to do more with less time. In this rush, we seem to have skimmed past the fundamental basics such as structural soundness, maternal instinct and frame capability – phenotypic signs which must be present to support the suggested probability of the genomic data prediction.
This tool of predict-
cessing calves into groups of similar size and age, and by this time, we have already grown quite fond of the youngsters who have shown us a lot of individuality and personality in this short time together.
Steve knows the pen leaders. Matt knows the escape artists, and Lisa knows the curious lovers. Melissa has balanced our foundation by collecting the required documents to keep us legal and providing follow-up and education to our hopeful and hesitant consignors who have put in a great deal of trust to ship us some of their most prized breeding stock.
This is a task we value and protect with all of our being.
We spend the win-
ability is only useful and reliable when the actual, real evidence validates the prediction.
These basics, still seen by the keen eye of the experienced cattlemen and women through years of calculated observation, is the solution to the current dilemma – increased demand on a shrinking cow and herd size and soaring land and input costs with narrowing margins.
Why choose Midland? Proof.
We aren’t marketing a “possibility” here. We are proving through years of long-term selection one can keep structural soundness, frame size, weaning weight, mothering, milk and breed back, while having it all with efficiency and gaining as well, sometimes better than the average while eating less.
MBT honors junior consignor
Each year, the Junior Consignor Award is presented to the bull with the highest Midland Bull Test (MBT) Index, which has been consigned by a junior consignor.
A junior is defined as a consigner age 21 and under as of Jan. 1. The bull must be registered in the junior consignor’s name in the Midland Bull Test program.
As of March 11, pending semen results and registration documents, Isabella Gotto of Deppe Angus of Waverly, Iowa received the Junior Consignor High Indexing Bull Award with lot 253, reporting an MBT Index of 116.
This bull was sired by Musgrave Redemption and had an ADG of 3.78, a WDA of 3.87 and has EPDs of BW 2.6, WW 106, YW 177, M 29, RFI -1.76 and Eff 111.
The Reserve Junior Consignor High Indexing Bull Award went to Alec Gotto of Deppe Angus with lot 250, reporting an MBT Index of 111.
Sired by Crouch Congress, this bull had an ADG of 3.83, a WDA of 3.87and has EPDs of BW 3.3, WW 103, YW 173, M 36, RFI 2.03 and Eff 96.
ter – sometimes in record low temperatures – weekends holidays tending to your stock as if it were our own. We break ice, we treat bulls in a storm, we bed pens, we leave equipment running all night, we miss dinner and we leave the house before our family is up, all to ensure these bulls get the very best care we can provide.
We WANT every bull at this facility to have the very best chance at success.
Then come the hard times – lame bulls, sick bulls that aren’t going to recover in time, bulls that don’t pass a semen test and bulls at the bottom of the assembled herd they joined at Midland Bull Test. Competition always yields a loser, and it never gets eas-
The beauty of Residual Feed Intake (RFI) is it is independent of phenotypic traits. But, we MUST measure because even the most astute eye can’t spot efficiency. Without measuring, one is only assuming, and assumptions can take us down the wrong road.
Take into consideration two sons of the same sire with relatively the same initial body weight. One bull ended with an RFI of nearly negative 4.7 and gained an average of just over five pounds per day, while the half-brother bull had an RFI of over five while gaining an average of approximately four pounds per day.
The difference is almost 11 pounds of dry matter intake daily. Retaining daughters for longterm use would have a profound effect on input costs
ier to cut the bottom 20 to 30 percent of the bulls we have come to know and love.
We spend a lot of time feeling dreadful about those who don’t make it to the Final Sort Sale, but we must work right through it because the public has been watching and waiting, eager to see who rises to the top.
We are swimming in data and verifying numbers. We are assembling reports, advertisements, leader lists and catalogs. We all wake up in the middle of the night when we remember a task we missed or have a revelation about bulls, equipment, illness and data. We laugh about how consumed and invested we have become, and by the time the sale rolls around, we are tired.
dependent on bull choice. We aren’t going to find an expected progeny difference (EPD) or a dollar value on a mother cow which independently raises a calf year in and year out with no human intervention.
But, if we stack those mothers and efficiency in the pedigrees, we’re going to see validation as our profits grow and our inputs decline.
Midland offers validation of the projected expectations in the data we collect and publish to assist producers in finding the bulls that fit the criteria needed to advance their herd in the direction they want to go with confidence.
In closing, here is a thoughtful passage applying to all cattlemen, women and breeds of today, shared by an astute cattleman and a
We are spent from the highs and lows, long hours and constant stretching from improvements, but still, as those in agriculture know, we work through it.
Now it’s time for the winners to celebrate. Those who made the sale are beaming and eager to share their achievements. It’s sale time. We open our doors and finally get to serve our customers with hospitality and camaraderie. It’s one of our favorite things to do, but we still must work through the lows of the seasons and the load of a large sale.
Continuing to ensure safety and education for those who are new and those who have grown a little too accustomed. What a breeze blows through here,
great friend, TJ Gabriel:
Correct fundamentals
Some cattlemen either cannot or will not recognize correct fundamentals in an unfitted bull. We have found time-tested successful commercial breeders are among the shrewdest judges in selecting great breeding bulls. They can and will recognize correct fundamentals in a thin bull and are willing to pay good prices.
Why? Through his years of successful operations, he has lots of bull experience. He has bought fat bulls and watched them get thin. Sad and costly breeding experiences have been his best teacher. He has bought well-conditioned bulls and has been impressed with their development, liveability and breeding performance.
Yes, the practical cat-
as it comes and goes. We have top sellers, we have buyers who got their first pick and we have filled large orders. But we also have some who didn’t meet the floor, so the roller coaster continues.
As we deliver orders, we have finally settled with some peace.
The cycle quickly begins all over, and the only thing I’m certain of is nobody wants these bulls, consignors and buyers to succeed more than all of us at Midland Bull Test –for the ranchers, for the producers, for the breeds, for the consumers, for the world and success for us all.
Thank you,
Steve
and Amy Williams Midland Bull Test
tlemen are looking for and demanding the very fundamentals that have made the Angus breed the greatest beef breed in the world. They are looking for and demanding red meat, bully bulls, with lots of natural thickness throughout the barrel, great depth of body and good legs with plenty of the right kind of bone.
We believe he is entitled to these fundamentals. He is willing to sacrifice on some other fundamentals if necessary. He is cautious and hard to fool on the fads and extremes which creep in and out of the breed. We need this kind of cattlemen and many more to fully develop the great potential of the expansion of Angus cattle.

New research suggests a correlation between a bull's breeding condition and calf health
Recently, during the 2023 Montana Nutrition Conference and Livestock Forum held in Bozeman, Mont., co-hosted by the Montana State University College of Agriculture and Montana Feed Association, North Dakota State University (NDSU) Animal Science Professor Carl Dahlen discussed recent research findings exploring livestock epigenetics.
Dahlen and the NDSU research team are studying reproductive efficiency in livestock with a focus on implications of maternal nutritional management on offspring characteristics through multiple generations and addressing if paternal nutrition and management are implicit in offspring outcomes.
Dahlen’s epigenetics research suggests bulls may have a more substantial influence on herd

Pushing the boundaries
In a Jan. 7 AgUpdate article featuring Dahlen’s presentation at the conference, he states the condition of a bull nine months before the breeding season might significantly influence calf health, based on studies in humans and mice.
“We are all familiar with fetal programming or that maternal nutrition plays a role in the development of calves,” says Dahlen. “For instance, we all know we like a good, long cold streak in the winter when cows eat more because it generally results in bigger calves. But, we are also looking at the impact a bull’s condition can have immediately before breeding season.”

The research team has been trying to understand the effects of common management scenarios of nutrition and growth rates in bull mechanisms resulting in paternal programming and subsequent offspring outcomes.
“Understanding the implication of paternal programming is imperative as short-term feeding and management decisions have the potential to impact productivity and profitability of our herds for generations to come,” he states.

the lifetime of the bull,” Dahlen explains.
“A lot is happening in a bull calf during the time some of us don’t even consider him being a bull,” he adds. “He’s out there with mom, but his nutrition at the time will affect his performance later.”
Dahlen reiterates most research from the 1980s focused on the weight gain of a bull calf as it matured, stating the target gain should be 3.9 pounds per day.
However, recent research has revealed this could contribute to scrotal fat accumulation, foot problems and liver abscesses.
To be effective herd sires, bulls must develop properly after weaning, and if nutrient intake is below acceptable requirements, growth weights are reduced and puberty can be delayed, which can permanently impair sperm production.
“Right now, we don’t know anything about cat-
tle sire nutrition before the breeding season and how it relates to offspring, but it is interesting to consider,” he says. “As research continues, it will help determine the effects of bull nutrition on their offspring which is an important area to research.”
Nutrition alters hormones and metabolites
According to the 2021 North Dakota Livestock report, released by NDSU, the plane of nutrition in mature bulls fluctuates over the course of a year due to the demands of the
breeding season. Some bulls will lose weight only at the beginning of the breeding season and then manage to gain weight after, reaching the targeted optimal weight just before the subsequent breeding season.
The research further notes some bulls might begin losing weight before the breeding season, as they may have experienced a change in environment or diet after purchase or were being managed to gain weight over the winter and needed to be condi-
tioned to be back in breeding shape or placed on pastures to graze ahead of the breeding season.
In either instance, these bulls would be on a negative plane of nutrition leading up to the breeding season.
In the NDSU experiment, fluctuations in body weight and plane of nutrition of breeding bulls lead to changes in blood hormone and metabolite profiles.
Increased hormone and metabolite concentrations in bulls on a positive plane of nutrition were a prod-
KSU continues research on genetic prediction for male fertility
Genomic technologies have been widely adopted within the beef and dairy industries, and their popularity and utility continue to increase.
Kansas State University (KSU) Associate Professor of Animal Breeding Dr. Megan Rolf discussed genetic prediction for male fertility at the Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle Symposium held in Cheyenne on Sept. 6, 2023.
Rolf was raised on a cow/calf operation in eastcentral Kansas and has been involved with livestock her entire life. She joined KSU faculty in 2016, where she now teaches genetics courses and maintains an active research program in the use of genomics for genetic improvement in livestock.
The need for continued research
Fertility is a critically important factor in cattle production because it directly relates to the ability to produce offspring necessary to offset costs in
production systems.
KSU research has established female fertility has received greater attention and has been advanced through assisted reproductive technologies, as well as genetic selection. However, improving bull fertility has been largely ignored.
Rolf explained KSU is developing new tools in male fertility.
“We’ve got to go out and collect a lot of true data,” she said. “But, the cool thing about male fertility is the data actually already exists within the industry.”
The incorporation of genotypic data into genetic evaluations is crucial for genetic improvement in the livestock industry.
She noted selection and management to improve bull fertility not only have the potential to increase conception rates but also have the capacity to improve other economically-relevant production traits.
KSU research study
KSU researchers pub-
lished findings from a 2022 research study in the Journal of BMC Genomics, where the objective of the study was to perform a single-step, genomewide association study (ssGWAS) on beef bull semen attributes.
“Bull fertility is currently phenotypically evaluated with breeding soundness examinations and at artificial insemination (AI) centers, but measures of sire fertility are not currently included in genetic evaluation in the beef industry,” Rolf shared.
In the KSU study, a total of 1,819 Angus bulls with 50,624 collection records were used for ssGWAS. A five-generation pedigree was obtained from the American Angus Association, consisting of 6,521 sires and 17,136 dams. Genotypes on 1,163 bulls were also obtained from the American Angus Association and utilized in ssGWAS.
The study classified bull fertility phenotypes to include volume; concen-
tration; number of spermatozoa; initial motility; post-thaw motility; threehour, post-thaw motility; percentage of normal spermatozoa; primary abnormalities and secondary abnormalities, which were obtained from two AI centers.
Research identified beef bull fertility is known to be affected by a variety of environmental factors, and the KSU research team used a forward selection procedure to identify factors which significantly affect beef bull semen attributes.
“Factors included in the final model include variables such as fixed effects of bull age, season and year. Additional fixed effects include AI center, ejaculate number, day of the week and semen collector. The study validated bull fertility traits were controlled by genetic factors,” she stated.
Incorporating both traditional genetic evaluation approaches combined with genomic technologies
uct of the enhanced plane of nutrition. Elevated nonesterified fatty acids in bulls on a negative plane of nutrition were indicative of bulls mobilizing body reserves and a source of energy.
The research team observed alterations in blood profiles likely resulted in alterations of nutrients available for developing sperm.

has the opportunity to provide beef producers with genetic selection tools for male fertility.
Genetic evaluation
Published studies show bull fertility traits are low to moderately heritable, indicating improvements in bull fertility can be realized through selection.
Rolf noted, “In the past, research identified bull fertility traits were low to moderately heritable, indicating improvements in bull fertility can be realized through selection.”
However, according to a 2020 research study conducted by a KSU research team – including Rolf –which was published in The Translational Animal Science Journal, genomic selection is another useful tool which can increase genetic prediction capabilities and improve selection.
Genomic prediction has an even greater impact on the prediction of polygenic traits, such as fertility, because of the ability to incorporate biological information into genetic prediction.
While the dairy industry has been a leader in identifying genomic regions associated with male fertility traits, the beef industry has identified relatively few single nucleotide polymorphisms related to beef bull fertility.
“As genomic technology continues to advance, there is no doubt the livestock industry will benefit greatly from the genomic developments ahead,” she concluded.

Expert offers tips to minimize injuries in bulls during the breeding season
Breeding bulls are considered elite athletes, and to perform at their best, they must be in top physical condition.
Experts believe bulls represent the most significant investment in a cow/calf operation in actual dollars.
However, during the breeding season, bulls spend most of their time out on pasture and are vulnerable to numerous injuries and health risks.
“Most injuries seen in bulls happen during breeding season and fall into two categories – reproductive injuries and musculoskeletal injuries, usually to the feet and legs,” states Jennifer Pearson, assistant professor in the Department of Production Animal Health at the University of Calgary.
Unfortunately, when this happens, it usually means the breeding season –and possibly even the career
– for the injured bull is over.
Reproductive injuries
“A common reproductive injury is a penile hematoma, often called a broken penis. This occurs when the connective tissue surrounding the penis is bent too much, so it breaks or tears and the leakage of blood creates swelling,” Pearson explains.
These injuries are common in bulls breeding cows out on pasture, compared to bulls in a confined, controlled situation or bulls being collected for artificial insemination.
“Bulls can also develop what is called a penile or preputial laceration where the tissue covering the penis is injured due to a breeding injury. This can happen if the tissue gets caught between the bull and the cow’s hip bones or when traveling through shrubs,” she adds.
The prepuce only gets noticed when something goes wrong, but it can cause economic loss and negatively impact a producer’s breeding program.
Understanding the severity of an injury is critical to a bull’s health, as other issues can arise from these injuries, like scar tissue and adhesions.
Pearson notes both of these injuries result in soreness and swelling, but they usually heal and the bull will recover, depending on the severity.
Treatment for these injuries depends on the duration, severity and resulting damage to the prepuce.
According to South Dakota State University Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly, superficial lacerations may be treated with 30 days of rest from breeding and flushing the sheath with an antiseptic solution if there is no swelling and subsequent prolapse of the prepuce.
However, injuries at this early stage are seldom noticed out on pasture and are detected once the prepuce has been prolapsed for a reasonable length of time and the tissue is dry, swol-
len, dirty and infected, Daly points out.
“Treating injuries at this stage requires softening the prolapsed tissue and reducing the swelling enough so it can be replaced back into the sheath,” he explains. “The prognosis of a bull with severe preputial injuries is very guarded for future breeding purposes.”
He adds, “Preputial injuries are yet another reason to keep a close eye on bulls on summer pasture. If there’s hope of saving a bull’s breeding capacity for another breeding season, it will depend on prompt detection of the injury and prompt treatment.”

Musculoskeletal injuries
Musculoskeletal injuries include broken legs, torn ligaments and various lameness issues, which also include foot and claw lesions, impairing the bull’s ability to travel and breed cows.
A breeding season injury can be devastating to breeding efficiency, but if a bull receives an injury to the stifle, it can be career ending.
Pearson notes, “This form of an injury usually occurs as a result of fighting but can happen during breeding due to cow movement or poor footing.”
One challenge of bringing bulls together from different sources in a community pasture is they will spend a fair amount of time fighting to establish their social hierarchy.
To reduce injuries from fighting, bulls can be wintered together before the breeding season, allowing them to establish their social order prior to breeding.
It is also suggested to shorten the breeding season. Once breeding activity slows, bulls have the tendency to spar and increase the chance of injury.
Pearson says, “Foot and claw injuries can sometimes be prevented by ensuring a bull’s feet are not too long and overgrown.”
Trimming bulls’ feet before breeding season can be beneficial, especially if they have been confined or live on soft ground with no chance to wear their feet down naturally.
“Keeping feet at normal length can help prevent some of the issues associated with long toes or overgrown feet,” says Pearson. “If we are looking at trimming feet, we can find and deal with some of these issues before they become lame or prevent issues that might lead to lameness.”
Some bulls who suffer musculoskeletal injuries may become serviceable with pen rest and antiinflammatory drugs. Melissa Anderson is the editor of the Wyoming Livestock Roundup. Send comments on this article to roundup@wylr.net.

Top End of Elite Genetics!
It is critical for producers to manage bulls during the winter, considering they contribute one-half of the genetics to a cow herd.
Producers must consider several factors, including protection from winter weather and exercise to ensure semen quality.
Harsh winter weather can impact a bull’s ability to breed successfully, so providing appropriate shelter, bedding and feed is critical to its success.
Producers know winter can be challenging for cow herds, but Karla Wilke, Nebraska Extension specialist, reminds them to keep their bulls in mind during the winter and create a solid management plan.
“Bulls are one of the bigger investments in the cow herd, and 90 percent of cows are still impregnated through natural service with a bull rather than with artificial insemination,” Wilke states. “So, they also require year-round maintenance.”
Incorporating a bull management plan during winter months can enhance bull performance during the upcoming breeding season.
Frostbite
Winter weather can create a variety of scenarios in which bulls can become injured. Providing windbreaks and bedding can help protect bulls from the
Winter weather management plans ensure bull fertility success
frozen ground and wind chill.
“Lack of protection from the frozen ground or continual snow presence could lead to blisters or scabs on the testis from frostbite, which could permanently lower sperm-production capabilities,” Wilke says. “When a bull’s testicles are injured from frostbite, it could make it harder for them to pass their breeding soundness exams.”
She further notes evidence of frostbite to the scrotum is usually apparent a few days after freezing in the form of noticeable inflammation and swelling.
“When looking for evidence of frostbite, damaged tissue will appear as a scab, discoloration or sloughing of the lower portion of the scrotum,” Wilke explains.
Frostbite can be prevented by providing heavy bedding, a shelter or windbreak for bulls to escape the weather.
Bedding is essential to help mitigate the cold by providing insulation from the frozen ground or snow and keeping cattle clean.
In addition, providing protection from wind and cold temperatures can help bulls maintain their body condition, reducing additional supplementation support to help maintain their body temperature.
She adds, “Since sperm is produced over 60 days before breeding a cow, cold stress in late winter may negatively affect sperm production and fertility, resulting in low fertility early in the spring breeding season.”
What to watch for
South Dakota State University (SDSU) experts found severe and persistent cold weather can stress a bull’s system, so they will need more dietary energy for body maintenance.
SDSU’s research notes anytime there is a period of extreme temperature change, bulls can have a period of subfertility, especially if they lack good nutrition or protection.
Also, fast-changing weather can lead to illnesses affecting fertility.
For instance, a bull with a fever or pneumonia may not be able to recover sufficiently in time to breed, and when the bull’s body temperature elevates, it interferes with spermatogenesis.
SDSU Professor and Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly concludes, “It is important for bulls to go into winter months with a strong body condition score around a six and to schedule bulls for breeding soundness exams at least 60 days prior to the start of breeding season.”
He notes increased
lameness caused by harsh weather, including sprains, strains and dislocations, can affect an animal later on if they do not heal in a timely fashion or if the injury remains chronic. Movement on and through ice, snow and mud can put a strain on the bull’s feet and legs, affecting its ability to travel on pasture.
“In a similar manner, bulls standing in persistent mud can be prone to foot rot. If these cases go untreated or evade detection, the infection can extend into one of the coffin joints and wall off into
an abscess which creates long-term lameness,” he mentions.
Exercise
Many experts maintain bulls need adequate exercise in the winter to maintain their stamina during the spring breeding season. Therefore, producers should spread out water, feed and minerals to require bulls to walk around.
Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension regional livestock field specialist, says exercise before the breeding season is important to make sure bulls are physically ready
for breeding.
“Since many bulls service females in pastures, they are accustomed to walking long distances. The breeding process demands physical activity,” he says. “Therefore, producers should make exercise a part of winter management.”
Keeping a bull in proper condition requires producers to focus on body condition, reduce stress and allow for adequate exercise.

World Angus Evaluation works to improve
On Oct. 13, 2023, the American Angus Association (AAA), Canadian Angus Association (CAA) and Angus Australia launched the World Angus Evaluation (WAE), a globally-focused genetic analysis of Angus cattle with the goal of eliminating hurdles for cattlemen participating in international commerce of the breed’s genetics.
WAE combines data from the three participating entities to improve accuracies for 13 specific expected progeny differences (EPDs).
“Putting all of the data together leverages each association’s database really well,” says Kelli RetallickRiley, president of Angus Genetics, Inc. in an Oct. 11, 2023 press release. “We want to make sure when Angus producers – no matter what country they’re
in – go to sell a bull or go to purchase genetics, they have access to comparable EPDs.”
New EPDs
According to the AAA, WAE is an expansion of the foot score evaluation, which was released in 2020 by the three organizations.
Therefore, the claw set EPD and foot angle EPD are already available in the three-country evaluation.
Now, 11 additional traits are available through WAE, including calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, birthweight, weaning weight, yearling weight, maternal milk, scrotal circumference, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat thickness.
Benefits of WAE
Although the U.S., Canada and Australia have been engaged in the trade
of beef cattle genetics for many years, it hasn’t always been easy for Angus breeders to translate how an animal from one country scores under another country’s evaluation system.
The common currency created through WAE will make it much easier to compare EPD values across country lines.
“There’s a huge efficiency created by us being on the same evaluation,” says CAA Chief Executive Officer Myles Immerkear. “If we can do a better job in our evaluations to describe those animals, especially for countries doing a lot of trade, I think producers are going to be in much better shape.”
Additionally, information sharing between the three countries through WAE will help Angus asso-
EPDs across U.S., Australia and Canada
ciations gather data on traits which have been historically difficult and expensive to collect, especially carcass merit traits.
“Combining forces allows genetic evaluation for carcass traits to become more robust while avoiding additional costs for data collection,” the AAA notes.
WAE has also created a venue for valuable teamwork between international entities.
“It’s really fun to be able to work with partners you trust, you enjoy working with and who all have similar objectives when it comes to the success of Angus cattle around the world,” says Retallick-Riley.
Ongoing outreach
As with any new change, some producers have voiced their concerns about the launch of WAE.
However, the AAA assures Angus breeders across the U.S., Canada and Australia, WAE will not change members’ data collection or reporting procedures and their data submissions will be treated with the same care they would be for any other tool or research project. Additionally, the AAA notes member education and outreach will be ongoing.

Beef Cattle Research Council offers tips for raising heifer for reproductive success
The management and development of beef heifers prior to breeding and before, during and after their first calving will set the tone for a female’s entire productive lifetime.
During a beef production webinar hosted by the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) on Jan. 17, Veterinary Agri-Health Services Dr. Elizabeth Homerosky and Chinook Ranch Owner and Operator Stephen Hughes share key insights on what to look for when getting heifers started to ensure they remain productive and become valuable mothers in the herd for years to come.
Post-weaning
heifer development
“When making decisions related to herd devel-
opment, it is helpful to consider the cow value curve,” Homerosky states. “The cow value changes over the female’s lifetime, creating a value curve which is quite different than a straight line of declining value.”
Evidence shows heifers typically appreciate from weaning until three years old. They are about five years old when they begin to depreciate rapidly.
“How do we extend this curve outwards?” she asks. “Let’s look at the impacts to heifer development systems.”
Homerosky says the primary goal of heifer development systems is to maximize economic efficiency, reproductive performance and longevity.
“Traditionally, heifers
were targeted to achieve 60 to 65 percent of mature body weight prior to puberty and breeding,” she adds. “What would happen if they got to 55 percent of their body weight?”
Homerosky cites recent research from the University of Nebraska which utilized an alternative feeding strategy including three categories – early gain, even gain and late gain.
The research reveals those in the late-gain category consumed 12 percent less feed and had a 15 percent increase of first-cycle pregnancies compared to the even-gain group.
Extensive systems
Research studies have found correlations between post-weaning growth rate, age at puberty and pregnancy rates in heifers.
Homerosky notes extensive systems work because heifers are being challenged early and develop better grazing habits.
“The more we treat her like a cow, the better cow she will be,” she remarks. “I like to see heifers graze alongside their mother during their first snowstorm, as I believe them watching their mother graze underneath the snow is quite valuable to them.”
She adds, “We want to take advantage of the compensatory gain, it is better to have a thin heifer gaining weight rather than an overconditioned heifer losing weight.”
earlier in the breeding season calved earlier in the calving season and had a longer interval to rebreeding,” she says. “Calves born earlier in the calving season were older and heavier at weaning.”
LEGENDARY SINCE
In heifers, by altering the rate of gain and total percentage of mature body weight achieved prior to breeding, it is possible to influence the performance of their calves and subsequent pregnancy rate.
Pre-breeding management
Homerosky suggests producers evaluate heifers approximately six weeks prior to breeding, as it is a good time to assess what percentage of the herd is cycling and check on body conditions scores (BCS).
“If their BCS is little less than what we like to see, we still have time to correct it,” she says. “This is also an ideal time to visit with a local veterinarian, discuss vaccination options and administer vaccine.”
Modified-live vaccines with fetal protection claim to protect the fetus from becoming infected with bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), she points out.
Many vaccines often contain a combination of four viruses – infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBR), parainfluenza 3 virus, bovine respiratory syncytial virus and BVD.
U.S. MARC also reported heifers who calved during the first cycle, on average, stayed in the herd one year longer than heifers calving in their second or third cycle.
“By shortening up the breeding season and working with a veterinarian, the value of heifers calving in the first cycle are economically better for a herd program,” she continues.
Economists suggest it takes at least five calves for a heifer to pay for her original development costs and ongoing maintenance costs.
She mentions many producers utilize estrus synchronization to tighten up their calving interval, recommending shortening breeding down to 30 days.
Cows will calve within a few days of each other, lessening the time one needs to spend watching them. Tighter calving intervals create a more uniform calf group to market at weaning time.
Rising plane of nutrition
Hughes agrees with Homerosky.
“It’s good to give these vaccines in advance, as IBR fragments can cause a slight reduction in fertility because it causes temporary inflammation in ovaries,” she says.
“Cattle bred on an increasing plane of nutrition have shown higher pregnancy rates than cattle bred on a declining plane of nutrition,” Hughes states.
First-cycle calving and estrous synchronization
Longevity and lifetime productivity are important factors influencing profitability for the cow/calf producer.
“Heifers were grouped into 21-day calving periods, and longevity and weaning weight data was collected on 16,549 individual heifers at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) conceiving during their first breeding season,” Homerosky shares.
“Heifers who conceived
Since 50 to 70 percent of input costs are associated with feed, manipulating nutrition can make operations more profitable. However, manipulation must be done strategically in order to not affect future cattle performance, the two speakers conclude.
In essence, understanding the production cycle of the cow, the cow’s nutritional needs and how to manipulate the diet may save producers financially and can help prevent future reproductive failures.
