I have never had a good view of a wild polecat, but have seen a few dead on local roads. A long time ago I shared an old house with a couple who kept ferrets as pets. They were wonderfully quick and agile and funny when racing around the kitchen.

Ferrets are domesticated polecats and vary in appearance from the familiar yellow to something very like the wild form – near black with a strikingly masked face. For 2000 years people have kept them to bolt rabbits. Genuine wild polecats have their stronghold in Wales, and are thought to be spreading more into England. As well as rabbits they take small mammals, birds, amphibians and earthworms. In winter they may visit farm buildings and catch rats.
