Straws and Containers Delaney teaches in an Early Head Start center-based classroom with a mixed-age group of infants and toddlers. To meet the learning needs of all of the children, Delaney frequently offers open-ended materials for their play. Observing the children’s interest in containers, Delaney provided a variety of straws and containers with different-size openings to encourage exploration. 27-month-old Jason was very interested in the straws and containers. As he explored, Delaney described what she saw him doing. "You opened the lid of the container. You dropped one straw in. Are you going to choose another straw the same color?" Notes:
