The 2016 Summer Olympics begins August 5th and in anticipation of the games, WXXI dedicates an evening of historical Olympic programming. The evening kicks off at 8pm with The Nazi Games – Berlin 1936, which looks at how the Nazis and the IOC turned, to their mutual advantage, a relatively small, elitist sports event into an epic global and mass media spectacle that, despite the IOC’s determined attempts to forget, continues to this day. The Boys of ’36 follows at 9pm. The film explores the thrilling story of the American rowing team that triumphed at the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. The Gold Medal evening concludes with T-Rex: Her Fight for Gold at 10pm This Independent Lens program tells the story of Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, who rose from the streets of Flint, Michigan, and at 17 won the first Olympic gold medal for women’s boxing in 2012.

DEAR FRIENDS, As we approach the 50th anniversary of WXXI-TV (our official sign-on was September 6, 1966), I am pleased to share some good news about the future of public media in Norm Silverstein Rochester. Thanks to a capstone gift of $2 million from philanthropist Tom Golisano, WXXI has announced the successful completion of our “Go Public” Comprehensive Campaign! With the Golisano gift, the “Go Public” campaign topped $18.4 million, surpassing its original goal of $17 million. The funds raised over the past five years have already paid dividends to the community with investments in new transmitters for AM 1370 and Classical 91.5 FM, improvements in the WXXI television signal, new cameras and editing systems, and support for news programming and documentaries. The campaign also benefited Rochester’s historic Little Theatre with the installation of digital projectors, sound systems, and new screens for all five theaters. Since acquiring The Little more than three years ago, WXXI has raised and invested more than $1 million to restore and preserve this historic gem. Fundraising (and renovations) will continue at The Little, as we work to restore Theatre 1 and make it more accessible and more comfortable for everyone. As for our 50th anniversary, we’re proud of the way WXXI has become an essential part of the Rochester community. We hope that the “founding fathers” and “founding mothers” of the station would share our pride in the way WXXI works to make this a better place for all of us. I still marvel at the original Television Program Log on the wall outside Studio A (see photo to left). The first night included Julia Child making chocolate mousse, a performance of “The Mikado,” and a membership message. Some things never change! We’ll be sharing more news about our significant anniversary in the weeks and months to come. In the meantime, watch and listen for election coverage from PBS, NPR and WXXI. And if you haven’t heard yet, Great Performances will bring us Hamilton’s America in October. The feature film documentary brings history to life through the contemporary perspective of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary hip-hop musical, Hamilton. So, mark your calendars for Friday, October 21, 9-10:30 p.m. There’s a lot to celebrate at WXXI, from a very special anniversary to the inside story of one of the most popular musicals of our time. Thanks for helping to make it happen, through your support for WXXI! Best regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Park Ave Bike Shop owner, Andy August, and his team work hard to ensure

their customers are comfortable and efficient on the bikes they buy. The shop’s knowledgeable staff, selection of bicycles, and array of accessories make them a resource for cyclists of all levels. With locations at Monroe and Clover, as well as in Henrietta, here is more from our local bicycling specialist!

Q. How can new cyclists improve their cycling experience? New cyclists should make sure their bikes are properly set up in terms of fit and function. Also, finding good routes and people to ride with will make cycling a lot more fun. This is best done by joining a club like the RBC (Rochester Bicycling Club) for road riding, the GVCC (Genesee Valley Cycling Club) for road racing, or GROC (Genesee Regional Off-Road Cyclists) for off-road riding. Doing a charity ride is also a great way to provide a goal for the season, plus you will get to ride a great route and meet like-minded people. Q. What other equipment and accessories do you carry? We carry just about any accessory that can be imagined for cycling. We even sell safety lights that use radar to tell the rider when a car is approaching -- the light will also get brighter as the car gets closer. In the winter we keep it going by selling cross country skis, backcountry skis, and snowshoes. Q. Most bike-friendly city you’ve visited? Madison, Wisconsin. Q. What safety advice can you offer? When road riding, ride as if you are invisible. Be aware of traffic in front of you and, most importantly, of what’s behind you. parkavebike.com ANDY AUGUST, OWNER

SOAR

FRIDAY, AUGUST 5 AT 10PM ON WXXI-TV

This documentary explores the inspiring relationship between two sisters—both dancers: Kiera Brinkley, a quadruple amputee who lost her limbs at age two, and Uriah Boyd, who was born a month before her sister contracted pneumococcal sepsis. Featuring beautiful and moving dance sequences, the documentary celebrates the extraordinary ways that Kiera has learned to adapt—as a dancer, choreographer and medical assistant. It also reveals the deeply loving relationship between the sisters and how Uriah dedicated her life to helping Kiera adjust. Over the course of three and a half years, SOAR follows the lives of these two remarkable young women, capturing moments of revelation about themselves, and their frustrations with each other as they mature as individuals, dancers, and sisters. This program is part of MOVE TO INCLUDE, a project funded by the Golisano Foundation to build a more inclusive community by inspiring and motivating people to embrace different abilities and include all people in every aspect of community life. APM REPORTS STUCK AT SQUARE ONE:

THE REMEDIAL EDUCATION TRAP SUNDAY, AUGUST 21 AT 9PM ON AM 1370

When students go to college, they expect to be in college classes. But in fact, four in 10 students end up in basic math and English, relearning what they were supposed to learn in high school. The vast majority of them never get a college degree. What’s going on? Most people point to failures in the nation’s K–12 education system, but this documentary probes deeper, exploring how students are placed into these classes, what skills people really need to be successful in college, and how best to learn those skills.

APM REPORTS: SPARE THE ROD: REFORMING SCHOOL DISCIPLINE

SUNDAY, AUGUST 14 AT 9PM AM 1370

SUNDAY, AUGUST 28 AT 9PM ON AM 1370

American Abroad discusses the current state of human intelligence gathering and its future. They explore how encryption affects the nature of spying, how the challenge of recruiting has changed, and what techniques do agencies at home and abroad feel will give them the edge for the future.

APM visit St. Paul, where parents and teachers complain that kids who should be disciplined are disrupting classrooms and causing chaos. It also travels to Denver, where a grassroots group pushed the schools to stop suspending their kids and try using a restorative justice approach to discipline instead.

ROOTABAGA BOOGIE SUNDAYS FROM 10 AM-NOON ON WRUR-FM Host Tracey Craig plays music old and new, from blues to bluegrass, traditional to contemporary, cajun, celtic, klezmer and other music rooted in faraway traditions right alongside Ithaca’s own homegrown variety. In her second hour she features live music and conversation with some of the bohemian characters who live in or happen to be passing through Ithaca: primarily musicians, but also artists, writers and other interesting folks whose creative output involves music.

In keeping with its commitment to providing quality opera programming year-round, Classical 91.5 brings you 10 operas from the San Francisco Opera, performed at the War Memorial Opera House. The season features Wagner’s comic masterpiece Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, two operas by Giuseppe Verdi, and an archival recording of Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites.

The second largest opera company in North America, San Francisco Opera has been a leader among international opera companies for nine decades. The radio series brings these worldclass performances to the airwaves, along with the occasional historic performance, with hosts Elaine Warner and Dianne Nicolini.

ROCMUSIC COLLABORATIVE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 AT 1 P.M. ON CLASSICAL 91.5

Alexander Peña, ROCmusic Collaborative director and member of the teaching faculty at the Eastman Community Music School, along with ROCmusic teaching artists and students join host Julia Figueras for a special Backstage Pass. Her guests will perform and talk more about ROCmusic, an El Sistema-inspired afterschool and summer music education program that provides tuition-free classical music and instrument instruction to urban youth in the neighborhoods in which they live. Backstage Pass is a monthly live performance program that gives listeners the backstage experience of meeting local and visiting artists “up close and personal.” This episode will repeat Sunday, August 28 at 1pm on Classical 91.5.

SUNDAYS AT 2 P.M., BEGINNING AUGUST 28 ON CLASSICAL 91.5

This series, recorded in the acoustically superb Barns at Wolf Trap – just outside of Washington D.C., showcases live performances from some of today’s finest chamber musicians. Hosts Rich Kleinfeldt and Lee Anne Myslewski (pictured) will pull you into the world of chamber music, sharing backstage stories, and stories from the stage with the radio audience. You’ll also hear from the artists, who might share why chamber music is a quintessential part of their life, or why the rigors of touring occasionally lead to difficult or embarrassing situations.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 AT 9:30 P.M.

It doesn’t get much more iconic than Indiana Jones’ first cinematic adventure. Our 35mm Saturday Night Rewind series continues with Indy’s search for The Ark of the Covenant. We promise this will be a snake-free screening. 35MM SCREENING CO-SPONSORED BY FRIGHT-RAGS

ONE TAKE DOC:

NUTS! 7 P.M. TUESDAY, AUGUST 9 ENCORE SCREENING: SATURDAY, AUGUST 13

NUTS! is a feature length documentary — directed by Penny Lane — about Dr. John Romulus Brinkley, an eccentric genius who built an empire with a goat testicle impotence cure and a million watt radio station. Using animated reenactments, interviews, archival footage, and a hilariously unreliable narrator, NUTS! traces Brinkley’s rise from poverty and obscurity to the heights of celebrity, wealth and influence in Depression-era America.
