Leggere un libro. Visitare una mostra. Ascoltare un concerto. Raramente si pensa che si tratta di autentici “privilegi”: oggi condivisi da molti, ma ancora (anche se può apparire strano) preclusi ai più.

La cultura, per progredire, richiede continue “chiavi di accesso”. Dalle più elementari (come il saper leggere) ad altre più sofisticate, che la cultura stessa, quasi per “geminazione”, crea di continuo.

Chiavi che ci consentono di scrutare orizzonti sempre più affascinanti e impegnativi (percepire l’enigma di una statua greca, di un quadro astratto o di un brano musicale, al di là della mera contemplazione).

Chiavi che durano per sempre. Che affinano gusto e capacità di giudizio. Che non possiamo smarrire e che nessuno ci potrà mai rubare. Che potremo condividere e scambiare con altri.

La cultura, innegabile segno di benessere sociale. Ma anche matrice di autentica felicità individuale.

Ci sono infiniti buoni motivi per incoraggiare e sostenere la cultura in tutte le sue migliori espressioni.

Everyone on the boat

“Mi faccio la barca” è il titolo di un vecchio film italiano degli anni ’80, diventato nel tempo qualcosa di più che un modo di dire. E c’è poi un posto dove per molti “farsi la barca” non è né moda né status symbol, non è ostentazione e nemmeno hobby. È quasi una fisiologica necessità che va oltre la passione. È voler vivere il mare, sfiorandolo, bagnandosi, fiutandone gli odori e la salsedine.

C’è un posto dove per toccare il mare che entra nella città e nel cuore di chi la abita, non basta un tuffo o qualche bracciata. Per condividerlo e conoscerlo meglio devi starci dentro, accarezzandolo e dondolando sulla sua superficie in una complicità che si trasforma col tempo prima in amore e poi in passione.

C’è un posto dove la barca, piccola o grande, a vela o a motore, non è un lusso, ma quasi una necessità. È una compagna di vita, quasi un membro di famiglia, col quale condividere magari un viaggio avventuroso, piuttosto che una gita di piccolo cabotaggio o solamente un pranzo senza levare gli ormeggi, innaffiato in compagnia di un buon bicchiere di vino.

C’è un posto dove per chi abita nel centro città basta solo attraversare la strada per salire a bordo della tua barca. La controlla, la sistema, la ripulisce: è un gesto d’amore, una coccola per farle capire quanto è importante per la tua vita. Ecco perché in questo posto, in questo golfo, nell’ultimo lembo di un mare che finisce proprio qui, fai fatica a contare i circoli nautici, gli yacht club, le società sportive, le canottiere, che sulla linea di costa e senza soluzione di continuità danno rifugio ad imbarcazioni di ogni tipo e grandezza.

Perché in questo posto la barca la puoi ereditare da nonni e genitori che ti hanno insegnato l’amore per il mare, ma puoi decidere di comprartela con i risparmi di una vita, magari il giorno della pensione, quando la tua terza età hai deciso di viverla in mezzo al blu. Ed è in questo posto che si nasce e si cresce, ma più spesso si diventa… marinai!

Questo posto è Trieste e solo qui puoi pensare di mettere sulla linea di partenza duemila scafi così diversi tra loro.

“La Barcolana può esistere solo a Trieste” raccontava il suo padre più rappresentativo, Fulvio Molinari. Perché in questa città “farsi la barca” è semplicemente un grande atto d’amore. Che il mare ricambia!

“Mi faccio la barca” [lit. I’m getting myself a boat] is the title of an old Italian film from the ‘80s, which over time has become more than just a saying. And there is a place where, for many, “getting a boat” is neither fashion nor a status symbol, it is neither ostentation nor a hobby. It is almost a physiological necessity that goes beyond passion. It is the desire to live the sea, touching it, getting wet, smelling its scents and saltiness.

There is a place where touching the sea that enters the city and the hearts of its inhabitants takes more than a dip or a few strokes. To share it and get to know it better, you have to be inside it, caressing it and rocking on its surface in a complicity that over time transforms first into love and then into passion. There is a place where the boat, small or large, sailing or motor, is not a luxury, but almost a necessity. It is a life companion, almost a family member, with whom to share perhaps an adventurous journey, a small coastal trip, or simply a lunch without leaving the berth, accompanied by a good glass of wine. There is a place where for those living in the city centre, it is enough to cross the street to get on board their boat. They check it, tidy it, clean it: it is a gesture of love, a caress to make it understand how important it is to their life. That is why in this place, in this gulf, at the last stretch of a sea that ends right here, you can hardly count the number of nautical clubs, yacht clubs, sports associations, and rowing clubs that on the coastline and seamlessly shelter to boats of all kinds and sizes.

Because in this place, you can inherit the boat from grandparents and parents who taught you the love for the sea, or you can decide to buy it with the savings of a lifetime, maybe on the day of your retirement, when you have decided to live your third age in the middle of the blue. And it is in this place that you are born and grow up, but more often you become... sailors! This place is Trieste, and one of the inventors of what is now the most crowded and well-known sea festival in the world left us years ago, stating that “only in this city” could a regatta like the one that has been taking place on the second Sunday of October for almost sixty years be born and grow. Because only in Trieste can you think of putting two thousand hulls so different from each other on the same starting line. Because only a city where the sea is such a protagonist can be the unparalleled stage for such a spectacle. “The Barcolana can only exist in Trieste,” said its most representative father, Fulvio Molinari. In this city “getting a boat” is simply a great act of love. Which the sea reciprocates!

Carlo è un bambino speciale che durante l’estate 2022 ha partecipato a un corso di vela estivo organizzato dalla Società Nautica Pietas Julia nella baia di Sistiana accompagnato da professionisti, assieme a un gruppo di coetanei. Dalla bella esperienza di Carlo è nato “Vento Inclusivo”, un progetto che ha l’obiettivo di estendere il corso ad altri piccoli atleti con disabilità, grazie al supporto della Pietas Julia e dall’associazione di promozione sociale “Al Centro di Sé”. L’iniziativa è stata ideata da Sara Iugovaz, istruttrice di vela e madre di Carlo, e da Noemi Di Nardo psicologa, responsabile del progetto e presidente di “Al centro di sé”. “Molti bambini con diagnosi di disturbo dello spettro autistico nel periodo estivo subiscono una riduzione dei servizi a loro dedicati, a causa della pausa scolastica. Le famiglie necessitano di riorganizzare i loro impegni inserendo i figli nei centri estivi, ma spesso per loro le possibilità esperienziali sono poche”, racconta Diego Cenetiempo, padre di Carlo.

“I muri che rendono la diversità emarginazione crescono sulle radici della paura, dell’ignoranza, della non conoscenza. Un modo per abbattere questi muri è dare ai nostri ragazzi l’opportunità di abbattere gli stereotipi”, aggiunge Luca Ambrosio, membro del direttivo della Società Nautica Pietas Julia e responsabile del progetto per la parte sportiva. “Vento inclusivo”, che partirà a fine giugno, è nella fase di raccolta dei finanziamenti. È possibile contribuire alla realizzazione del progetto scrivendo a segreteria@pietasjulia.it.

Carlo is a special child who, during the summer of 2022, participated in a summer sailing course organized by the Pietas Julia Yacht Club in the bay of Sistiana, accompanied by professionals and together with a group of peers. From Carlo’s positive experience, “Inclusive Wind” was born, a project aimed at extending the course to other young athletes with disabilities, thanks to the support of Pietas Julia Club and the social promotion association “Al Centro di Sé.” The initiative was conceived by Sara Iugovaz, a sailing instructor and Carlo’s mother, and Noemi Di Nardo, a psychologist, project manager, and president of “Al Centro di Sé.”

“Many children with autism spectrum disorder experience a reduction in services dedicated to them during the summer period due to the school break. Families need to reorganize their commitments by enrolling their children in summer camps, but often the experiential opportunities for them are limited,” says Diego Cenetiempo, Carlo’s father.

“The walls that turn diversity into marginalization grow on the roots of fear, ignorance, and lack of knowledge. One way to break down these walls is to give our kids the opportunity to shatter stereotypes,” adds Luca Ambrosio, a board member of the Pietas Julia Yacht Club and responsible for the sports section of the project.

“Inclusive Wind” will start at the end of June and is currently in the funding phase. It is possible to contribute to the project by writing to segreteria@pietasjulia.it.

Se ai triestini si menziona la Sacchetta i primi due elementi che verranno in mente a chi vive in questa città sono tra loro molto distanti, sia nel tempo che nello spazio. Nel primo caso ci troviamo di fronte ad un episodio legato alla storia della Tergeste romana e al martirio di San Giusto, patrono della città, mentre nel secondo l’epoca è quella della contemporaneità e ha a che vedere con la passione per il mare e, in particolare, per il mondo della vela.

La leggenda vuole che San Giusto (tra i primi martiri all’epoca in cui i cristiani, durante l’impero romano, non godevano della libertà religiosa) venne giustiziato nelle acque della Sacchetta. La condanna a morte venne praticata in modo particolarmente brutale e disumano. Al

collo dell’uomo che nei secoli a venire venne beatificato dalla Chiesa i romani legarono una pesante pietra e lo gettarono a mare. Di tutto ciò rimane, nel dialetto triestino, un’affermazione a metà strada tra una dissacrante iconografia e un realismo tipico delle genti di confine. “Giusto iera uno solo e anche quel i lo ga copà” recita il detto che da un lato pone l’interlocutore di fronte ad una sorta di apologia della buona fede, mentre dall’altro rimarca, come solo la vox populi sa esprimere, le ingiustizie dei potenti ai danni dei più deboli.

Facendo scorrere la linea del tempo in avanti di un paio di millenni, ecco che la Sacchetta è diventata uno dei luoghi dove è maggiormente evidente l’amore per il mare –e per le barche a vela–dei triestini. Qui, a due passi da piazza Unità, insiste una delle darsene più antiche del lungomare cittadino. Cercare un posto barca qui equivale ad un’impresa particolarmente complessa, visto il numero di attracchi disponibili, ma anche e soprattutto in virtù del desiderio dei triestini di entrare in possesso di un luogo facilmente raggiungibile in centro città, da dove poi salpare per le “scorribande” estive. Durante la regata velica più affollata al mondo, la Barcolana, tra questi moli e banchine si trova un po’ di tutto. Oltre ai velisti locali, ormeggiano in Sacchetta anche diverse imbarcazioni provenienti da fuori. La darsena, in quei giorni, si trasforma in una grande festa, dove equipaggi da tutte le parti dell’Adriatico condividono i momenti

precedenti alla competizione velica. Riuscire a farsi invitare a bordo di una barca a vela non è semplice, ma se il tentativo va a buon fine, ecco che al turista viene restituita una delle immagini più sincere di quella settimana d’ottobre. Tra le centinaia di vele della Sacchetta, in un angolo di questo specchio di mare, è ormeggiata una imbarcazione che di diritto ha scritto la storia della Barcolana: si chiama Betelgeuse e nell’albo d’oro della manifestazione figura, oltre che una delle imbarcazioni con il più alto numero di partecipazioni, come la prima vincitrice assoluta della regata. L’anno è il 1969, ovvero quella storica prima edizione che vede “gareggiare” (lo spirito è ancora quello di una domenica tra appassionati di riti conviviali dal sapore romantico) una cinquantina di imbarcazioni. All’epoca al timone della Betelgeuse c’è il comandante Piero Napp. L’equipaggio è composto da Marisa, moglie di Napp, Umberto Rizzi e Aldo Vidulich. Come ricordano le cronache del tempo, Betelgeuse vince “anche perché si è fatto prestare lo spinnaker di un terza classe, il Samurai, che quasi tocca l’acqua, ma offre una spinta eccezionale e fuori dalle regole in altre regate”. Ma al di là della vela e di episodi dell’antichità, la Sacchetta è un luogo del cuore anche per scrittori e professionisti. Qui è ambientato il romanzo di Pier Antonio Quarantotti Gambini “L’onda dell’incrociatore”, opera che risiede di diritto nel pantheon della letteratura alto adriatica del Novecento. Non sono

molte le persone –e più in generale gli appassionati– a sapere che da quel libro venne tratto un film. Fu il regista Claude Autant-Lara a ricostruire, in maniera libera, la storia narrata da Quarantotti Gambini. La pellicola venne intitolata “Les Régates de San Francisco” e l’ambientazione scelta fu quella della Costa azzurra, più precisamente nella baia di Villefranche. In Italia il film uscì con il titolo “Il risveglio dell’istinto”, ma in realtà la critica mostrò tutto il suo livore nei confronti dell’opera cinematografica. “Un disastro”, questo fu il commento di Quarantotti Gambini, dopo averlo visto. La Sacchetta non ha recitato il ruolo esclusivo di darsena o di martirii adriatici. Qui, alla fine del diciannovesimo secolo venne costruito uno dei primi stabilimenti balneari triestini. Si chiamava

bagno Fontana e, a differenza degli altri, non era un bagno galleggiante, bensì una struttura ben posizionata a terra, proprio di fronte alla Sacchetta. Tra gli ospiti illustri del periodo immediatamente successivo alla sua realizzazione si trova il nome di James Joyce, frequentatore dello stabilimento. Secondo la storiografia cittadina la sua demolizione venne decisa in virtù della necessità di edificare la stazione ferroviaria di Sant’Andrea, poi rinominata dal fascismo in Campo Marzio. La Sacchetta porta con sé storie tra le più diverse e che sopravvivono alla frenesia dei tempi moderni. Passeggiare lungo i suoi moli, in una giornata estiva, può regalare al visitatore quegli sprazzi di triestinità tanto nascosti, quanto autentici. Tutto, nel nome della vela.

If you mention the Sacchetta to the people of Trieste, the first two elements that come to mind for those who live in this city are very distant from each other, both in time and space. In the first case, we are faced with an episode linked to the history of Roman Tergeste and the martyrdom of San Giusto, the patron saint of the city, while in the second, the era is contemporary and has to do with the passion for the sea and, in particular, for the world of sailing.

Legend has it that San Giusto (one of the first martyrs at a time when Christians did not enjoy religious freedom under the Roman Empire) was executed in the waters of the Sacchetta. The death sentence was carried out in a particularly brutal and inhumane manner. The Romans tied a heavy stone around the neck of the man who would be beatified by the Church in the centuries to come and threw him into the sea. This is remembered in the Triestine dialect with a saying that is halfway between irreverent iconography and a realism typical of border people: “ Giusto iera uno solo e anche quel i lo ga copà” (“There was only one Justus, and even he was killed”). This phrase, on one hand, presents the listener with a sort of apologia for good faith, while on the other, it highlights, as only the voice of the people can, the injustices of the powerful against the weak.

Moving forward a couple of millennia, the Sacchetta has become one of the places where Triestines’ love for the sea and for sailing boats is most evident. Here, just steps away

Finding a boat mooring here is a particularly complex task, given the number of available berths, but also and especially because of the Triestines’ desire to secure a spot easily accessible in the city centre, from which to set sail for summer “raids.” During the world’s most crowded sailing regatta, the Barcolana, you can find a bit of everything between these piers and docks. In addition to local sailors, various boats from outside also dock in Sacchetta. During those days, the dock transforms into a great festival, where crews from all over the Adriatic share moments before the sailing competition. fifty boats “compete” (the spirit was still that of a Sunday among lovers of romantic convivial rituals). At the helm of Betelgeuse was Commander Piero Napp. The crew consisted of Marisa, Napp’s wife, Umberto Rizzi, and Aldo Vidulich. As the chronicles of the time recall, Betelgeuse won “also because it borrowed the spinnaker of a third-class boat, the Samurai, which almost touched the water but provided exceptional and out-of-regulation thrust in other regattas.”

But beyond sailing and episodes of antiquity, the Sacchetta is also a place dear to writers and professionals. Here is set Pier Antonio Quarantotti Gambini’s novel “L’onda dell’incrociatore” (“The Cruiser’s Wave”), a work that rightfully resides in the pantheon of twentieth-century Upper Adriatic literature. Not many people—let alone enthusiasts— know that a film was made from that book. Director Claude Autant-Lara freely reconstructed the story narrated by Quarantotti Gambini. The film was titled “Les Régates de San Francisco” and the setting was the French Riviera, more precisely in the bay of Villefranche. In Italy, the film

was released under the title “Il risveglio dell’istinto” (“The Awakening of the Instinct”), but critics were scathing towards the film. “A disaster,” was Quarantotti Gambini’s comment after seeing it.

The Sacchetta has not played the exclusive role of a dock or Adriatic martyrdom site. Here, at the end of the nineteenth century, one of the first bathing establishments in Trieste was built. It was called Bagno Fontana and, unlike others, was not a floating bathing establishment but a facility built on land, right in front of the Sacchetta. Among the illustrious guests of the period immediately following its construction was James Joyce, a frequent visitor to the establishment. According to local historiography, its demolition was decided due to the need to build the Sant’Andrea railway station, later renamed Campo Marzio by the fascists. The Sacchetta carries with it stories among the most diverse, surviving the frenzy of modern times. Walking along its piers on a summer day can give visitors glimpses of Triestine life that are as hidden as they are authentic. All in the name of sailing.

ATrieste la vela è un affare serio. Un’attività che accompagna l’intera vita: da piccoli o giovani come sport, per qualche fortunato adulto come professione, fino ad arrivare alla passione da portare avanti finché i capelli diventano grigi e oltre.

Quando si comincia? Per tanti i primi ricordi sono legati alla famiglia, a una domenica in Golfo, alle crociere in Dalmazia, alla prima regata che può essere l’immancabile Barcolana, la goliardica Marinaresca di fine agosto con partenza legati alla banchina di Piazza Unità o al week-end di giugno della Muggia-Portorose-Muggia. Prima dei dieci anni è quasi obbligatorio il passaggio alla scuola vela estiva dove si comincia a prendere dimestichezza

con l’Optimist, la prima deriva per eccellenza.

Alla scuola vela possono accedere tutti dai sette anni in su, non c’è alcun bisogno di esperienza pregressa e l’unico requisito è il fatto di saper nuotare. Tutte le società nautiche che costeggiano il Golfo da Muggia a Monfalcone offrono corsi da giugno ad agosto di durata variabile da una a due settimane. Sono gli stessi club a mettere a disposizione l’attrezzatura e i ragazzi cominciano a prendere dimestichezza con oggetti e un vocabolario molto specifico. Dal mattino al tardo pomeriggio i genitori lasciano i figli fare le loro esperienze per domare il vento, per superare la noia della pachea o per aiutarsi tutti insieme ad armare e disarmare le barche. da tanti fattori che spaziano dai legami familiari (e se i nonni o i genitori appartengono a club diversi sono dolori…), dal fatto di essere compagni tra i banchi durante l’inverno e si abbia voglia di diventare equipaggio in estate oppure servizi offerti dalla società, ubicazione, moda, blasone.

Ma questo è solo l’entry level. Il passo successivo è l’ingresso nella squadra agonistica. Sta qui il vero vivaio di campioni, perché se da Trieste arrivano alcuni dei velisti attualmente più quotati del panorama internazionale molto è dovuto all’ampia platea che accede a questo sport e alla bravura degli allenatori. Lo sloveno Dragan Gasic in forze da qualche decennio alla Barcola Grignano è un coach riconosciuto a livello internazionale che ha saputo allevare generazioni di giovanissimi fino ad arrivare a Lisa Vucetti, campionessa mondiale, e Mattia Di Martino, vincitore del titolo italiano Optimist nel 2023.

I vari Benussi, Bressani, Paoletti, Pelaschier, Vascotto – in rigoroso ordine alfabetico –, affiancati oggi da giovani talenti che si stanno facendo largo nel mondo della vela d’altura, sono quindi la punta di diamante di un diffuso movimento che a Trieste è capace di sfornare fior fiore di professionisti.

Lo squadrone giuliano presente nel Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team che parteciperà alla prossima America’s Cup conta una decina di nomi impegnati nei ruoli più disparati. Andrea Tesei e Nicholas Brezzi Villi fanno parte del sailing team, ma alle loro spalle ci sono progettisti, rigger, addetti alla logistica che rendono possibile il funzionamento di una macchina decisamente complessa nella quale per la prima volta hanno una parte da protagoniste anche le donne.

La 37a edizione della Coppa America vedrà infatti sfidarsi per la prima volta equipaggi interamente femminili che saliranno a bordo dei performanti AC40, barche super tecnologiche che riescono a volare sull’acqua. E tra le sette ragazze chiamate dal team per affrontare la vibrante esperienza dalla Puig Women’s America’s Cup di questo autunno a Barcellona ben tre arrivano da Trieste.

Maria Vittoria Marchesini e Alice Linussi seguono tutte le classiche tappe della carriera velica –dall’Optimist alle derive, dove vincono titoli nazionali, europei e mondiali– fino ad arrivare a confrontarsi con il mondo dei wingfoil e dell’altura.

La storia più emblematica è tuttavia quella di Giovanna Micol, due volte olimpionica a Pechino e Londra, un palmares invidiabile di medaglie, concluse le campagne a cinque cerchi ha iniziato a dividersi tra la vela, la professione di architetto e quella di mamma. Una vicenda quella di Giovanna che ben rappresenta la fortissima passione per il mare dei triestini e la storica volitività delle donne di questo angolo di Adriatico che hanno sempre voluto e saputo conciliare sport, lavoro e famiglia.

A Barcellona però le locals non saranno sole, ma avranno come avversaria un’amica di vecchia data come Francesca Clapcich, reclutata dal team statunitense di American Magic. Francesca è attualmente una delle veliste più complete del panorama internazionale, anche lei vanta due edizioni dei Giochi e brilla nel suo curriculum il fatto di essere la prima italiana a vincere nel 2023 la The Ocean Race, regata a tappe intorno al mondo.

Qualche anno fa Clapcich ha deciso di trasferirsi negli Stati Uniti mettendo su famiglia e dedicandosi anima e corpo ai temi dell’ecologia e dei diritti, oltre alla sua crescita personale come atleta. Il 11th Hour Racing Team di cui fa parte ha infatti una fortissima attenzione all’ambiente e le ha permesso di intraprendere una lunga strada di avvicinamento al suo obiettivo principale: la partecipazione nel 2028 al Vendée Globe, regata in solitario senza scalo che circumnaviga il mondo, soprannominata “l’Everest dei mari”. Il 2024 è anche l’anno delle Olimpiadi e a luglio a Marsiglia (sede della vela per Parigi 2024) sarà Jana Germani a tenere alta la tradizione dei triestini presenti ai Giochi. A bordo della deriva acrobatica 49erFX Jana vuole continuare sull’onda dei successi degli ultimi anni che l’hanno vista conquistare l’argento agli Europei e il bronzo ai Mondiali.

Alla scuola vela possono accedere tutti dai sette anni in su, non c’è alcun bisogno di esperienza pregressa.

Anyone aged seven and up can enroll in the sailing school, with no prior experience required.

In Trieste, sailing is serious business. It is an activity that accompanies one’s entire life: from childhood or youth as a sport, for some fortunate adults as a profession, and continuing as a passion into grey hair and beyond.

When does it start? For many, the first memories are linked to family, a Sunday in the Gulf, cruises in Dalmatia, the first regatta, which could be the inevitable Barcolana, the playful Marinaresca at the end of August starting tied to the dock in Piazza Unità, or the June weekend of the Muggia-Portorose-Muggia. Before the age of ten, it is almost obligatory to attend summer sailing school, where you start to get familiar with the Optimist, the first dinghy par excellence. Sailing school is open to everyone from the age of seven upwards, with no

prior experience needed, and the only requirement is the ability to swim. All the nautical clubs lining the Gulf from Muggia to Monfalcone offer courses from June to August, lasting from one to two weeks. These clubs provide the equipment, and the children begin to familiarize themselves with specific objects and vocabulary. From morning until late afternoon, parents leave their children to their own experiences to tame the wind, overcome the boredom of calm seas, or help each other rig and unrig the boats.

The choice of sailing club for school is determined by many factors, ranging from family ties (and if grandparents or parents belong to different clubs, it can be problematic...), being classmates during the winter and wanting to become a

crew in the summer, to the services offered by the club, location, fashion, and prestige.

But this is only the entry level. The next step is joining the competitive team. This is where the real breeding ground for champions lies because if Trieste produces some of the most highly regarded sailors on the international scene, much is due to the large number of participants in this sport and the skill of the coaches. Slovenian Dragan Gasic, who has been with Barcola Grignano for several decades, is an internationally recognized coach who has nurtured generations of young sailors, including world champion Lisa Vucetti and 2023 Italian Optimist champion Mattia Di Martino.

The various Benussi, Bressani, Paoletti, Pelaschier, Vascotto –listed in alphabetical order– are joined today by young talents making their mark in the world of offshore sailing. They represent the pinnacle of a widespread movement that in Trieste is capable of producing top-notch professionals.

The team from Trieste present in the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team for the next America’s Cup includes about ten names in various roles. Andrea Tesei and Nicholas Brezzi Villi are part of the

sailing team, but behind them are designers, riggers, and logistics staff who make the complex machine work, with women playing a prominent role for the first time.

The 37th edition of the America’s Cup will, in fact, see entirely female crews compete for the first time on the high-performance AC40s, boats that can fly on the water. Among the seven girls selected by the team to face the vibrant experience of the Puig Women’s America’s Cup this autumn in Barcelona, three are from Trieste. Maria Vittoria Marchesini and Alice Linussi have followed all the classic steps of a sailing career—from the Optimist to dinghies, winning national, European, and world titles—culminating in competing with wingfoils and offshore sailing.

The most emblematic story, however, is that of Giovanna Micol, a two-time Olympian in Beijing and London, with an enviable medal record. After concluding her Olympic campaigns, she began to divide her time between sailing, her profession as an architect, and being a mother. Giovanna’s story well represents the strong passion for the sea of the people of Trieste and the historic determination of the women in this corner of the Adriatic, who have always wanted and known how to balance sport, work, and family.

In Barcelona, however, the locals will not be alone but will face an old friend as an adversary: Francesca Clapcich, recruited by the American team of American Magic. Francesca is currently one of the most complete sailors on the international scene, with two editions of the Games under her belt, and the distinction of being the first Italian to win The Ocean Race in 2023, a round-theworld stage race.

A few years ago, Clapcich decided to move to the United States, starting a family and dedicating herself entirely to environmental and rights issues, in addition to her personal growth as an athlete. The 11th Hour Racing Team, of which she is part, has a strong environmental

focus and has allowed her to embark on a long journey towards her main goal: participating in the 2028 Vendée Globe, a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the world, dubbed “the Everest of the seas.”

The year 2024 is also an Olympic year, and in July in Marseille (the sailing venue for Paris 2024), Jana Germani will uphold the tradition of Triestines at the Games. Aboard the acrobatic 49erFX dinghy, Jana aims to continue the wave of successes of recent years, which have seen her win silver at the Europeans and bronze at the World Championships.

Dici marinaio e pensi a Paolo Rizzi e Stefano Spangaro. Tante le miglia percorse alle loro spalle, innumerevoli traversate atlantiche, sono entrambi accomunati dalla buona sorte di essere scampati alla furia dell’oceano: Paolo insieme ad Andrea Pribaz affondò nell’Atlantico con il suo Vento Fresco. Vennero tratti in salvo in maniera rocambolesca dopo una settimana a bordo della zattera alla deriva. Stefano faceva parte dell’equipaggio di Brooksfield che alla Whitbread del 1993-1994 perse il timone nella tappa da Punta del Este a Fremantle; la barca venne ritrovata 12 ore dopo l’ultimo SOS lanciato.

Oggi Stefano è il nuovo solido acquisto del maxi Prosecco Doc Shockwave 3 di Claudio Demartis per l’autunno denso di appuntamenti velici dell’alto Adriatico. A dare tuttavia filo da torcere ci penserà Arca Sgr di Furio Benussi, imbarcazione lunga oltre 30 metri, che da diversi anni è l’asso pigliatutto del Golfo e non solo.

Dai campioni di lunga data ai volti nuovi. Se Mattia Di Martino, classe 2009, già campione italiano Optimist nel 2023, ha staccato da poco il pass per partecipare ai Mondiali 2024 che si correrà a fine anno in Argentina, c’è chi come Andrea Neri ha appena colto con il suo sedici metri Nessun Dorma il titolo di Barca dell’Anno dopo aver vinto l’Atlantic Rally for Cruisers 2023.

When you think of sailors, you think of Paolo Rizzi and Stefano Spangaro. With countless miles sailed and numerous Atlantic crossings behind them, both share the good fortune of having survived the ocean’s fury: Paolo, together with Andrea Pribaz, sank in the Atlantic with his Vento Fresco. They were dramatically rescued after a week adrift on a raft. Stefano was part of the Brooksfield crew that lost its rudder during the 1993-1994 Whitbread race on the leg from Punta del Este to Fremantle; the boat was found 12 hours after the last SOS was sent.

Today, Stefano is the new solid addition to Claudio Demartis’s maxi Prosecco Doc Shockwave 3 for the busy autumn sailing season in the upper Adriatic. However, Arca Sgr, owned by Furio Benussi, a boat over 30 meters long, and the reigning champion of the Gulf and beyond for several years, will surely pose a challenge.

From long-time champions to new faces. While Mattia Di Martino, born in 2009 and already the Italian Optimist champion in 2023, has recently secured his spot for the 2024 World Championships to be held at the end of the year in Argentina, Andrea Neri has just claimed the title of Boat of the Year with his 16-meter Nessun Dorma after winning the 2023 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers.

Se è vero –com’è vero– che la Barcolana è il migliore e più riconosciuto biglietto da visita della città, IES aveva l’obbligo di spiegarne il perché ai suoi lettori e soprattutto a chi Trieste sta appena iniziando a conoscerla. Se quindi la festa del mare, che quest’anno soffia su 56 candeline, nasconde un segreto questo può svelarcelo solamente Mitja Gialuz, il presidente della Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano che la organizza da sempre.

Professore ordinario di Diritto processuale penale all’Università di Genova ma triestino doc, Mitja Gialuz alla soglia dei 50 anni può già vantarne dieci come presidente della SVBG, il sodalizio che nel 1968 inventò la più unica delle regate al mondo. Dieci da presidente e almeno una trentina passate prima in mare, seguendo una passione che sin da ragazzino lo aveva portato sul gradino più alto del podio col titolo iridato nei 470 jr.

Allora, da dove vogliamo iniziare a svelare il segreto di questa Barcolana?

“Proprio dall’affermazione del suo padre più famoso, Fulvio Molinari. Sono d’accordo con lui. Una regata del genere può esistere solo in questa città. E me ne

sono convinto da quando la mia professione mi ha portato a vivere a Genova, altra storica città di mare. Molti hanno cercato di imitare la Barcolana. Nessuno ci è riuscito. Se vogliamo trovarci un segreto, questo è tutto dentro la sua genuinità popolare. Negli anni del boom economico, quando la vela da yachting si è trasformata in sailing, ecco quello che mi piace definire il miracolo laico della Barcolana. La più democratica e popolare delle regate”.

E se c’è un’immagine che lo testimonia è quell’incredibile linea di partenza sotto il Faro della Vittoria “Dopo quasi 60 anni è quello che continua ad emozionare tutti, con in testa il sottoscritto. La partenza della Barcolana è un simbolo, un’icona di eguaglianza in un mondo sempre più diseguale. Essere tutti sulla stessa linea di partenza (quasi 2000 barche) significa condividere una passione. Anche se poi i percorsi di regata finiscono con l’essere diversi a seconda delle possibilità e capacità di ognuno: ci sono gli equipaggi dei super professionisti a fianco di una barca con a bordo un gruppo di amici. Dove trovate una cosa del genere in ambito sportivo? Con il dovuto rispetto, per partecipazione e legame col territorio,

vedo solo due possibili paragoni: la maratona di New York ed il Palio di Siena. Mescolateli assieme e scoprirete lo spirito della Barcolana”.

E c’è poi forse un altro valore aggiunto: in quei dieci giorni di festa Barcolana non è solo sport…

“È anche arte e cultura, teatro e scrittura, fondendo le più diverse realtà del territorio. Anche oltre i confini cittadini, Barcolana ha unito. Siamo stati capaci di fare squadra. Il manifesto di questo progetto lo abbiamo scritto a chiare lettere nel poster che ha accompagnato la cinquantesima edizione: quel… siamo tutti sulla stessa barca voleva dire molte cose”.

Una Barcolana antesignana nell’andare anche oltre confini veri e propri, per definirsi internazionale nel più stretto significato…

“E anche qui devo tirare nuovamente in ballo quel Fulvio Molinari che per primo volle allargare il campo di regata al mare della vicina Slovenia, anticipando quei confini aperti che solo qualche anno dopo vennero cancellati tra queste due nazioni. Un messaggio che resta di eccezionale attualità proprio alla vigilia di GO 2025, capitale della cultura. Barcolana è stata sempre fortemente europea e continueremo ad esserlo. A tale proposito proprio quest’anno proporremo un’interessante novità, rivolta specialmente agli appassionati stranieri: un progetto innovativo denominato Ticket to Race che consentirà ad esempio anche ad un velista di un altro continente di prendersi un biglietto per vivere la regata su un’imbarcazione che gli sarà fornita dalla nostra organizzazione”.

Altri progetti e se vogliamo qualche sogno, per crescere ancora in futuro?

“L’ambizioso progetto della Barcolana è quello di ripartire con progetti innovativi per la città che partano dal mare. Trieste è una città carsica che ha energie sotterranee, poi destinate ad uscire allo scoperto nel mare. Il sogno è poi quello di approdare con il nostro villaggio, sempre più stretto tra la piazza e le rive, nella nuova Trieste destinata a sorgere in quello che si chiama ancora Porto Vecchio, ma che dovrà per forza diventare un Porto vivo. E a Barcolana piacerebbe molto poter contribuire a trasformare questo sogno in realtà”.

If it’s true—and it is—that the Barcolana is the best and most recognized calling card of the city, IES had the duty to explain why to its readers and especially to those who are just beginning to get to know Trieste. So, if this sea festival, which this year celebrates its 56th edition, hides a secret, only Mitja Gialuz, the president of the sailing society that has always organized it, can reveal it.

A full professor of Criminal Procedure at the University of Genoa but a true Triestine, Mitja Gialuz, on the verge of turning 50, can already boast ten years as president of the SVBG, the association that invented the most unique regatta in the world in 1968. Ten years as president and at least thirty spent before that at sea, driven by passion that since he was a boy had led him to the top of the podium with the world title in the 470 class.

So, where do we want to start to unveil the secret of this Barcolana?

realities of the territory. Even beyond the city limits, Barcolana has united. We managed to build a team. We clearly wrote the manifesto of this project in the poster that accompanied the fiftieth edition: that... ‘we are all in the same boat’ meant many things.”

The Barcolana has always pushed boundaries, defining itself as truly international...

I agree with him. A regatta like this can only exist in this city. I became convinced of this when my profession led me to live in Genoa, another historic maritime city. Many have tried to imitate the Barcolana. None have succeeded. The secret lies in its genuine popular appeal. During the economic boom, when yachting transformed into sailing, the Barcolana emerged as the most democratic and popular of regattas—a secular miracle.”

If one image captures this, it’s the incredible starting line under the Victory Lighthouse.

“After almost 60 years, it’s still thrilling for everyone, including myself. The start of the Barcolana is a symbol, an icon of equality in an increasingly unequal world. Being all on the same starting line (almost 2000 boats) means sharing a passion. Even if the race courses end up being different depending on each person’s abilities and possibilities: there are the crews of super professionals next to a boat with a group of friends on board. Where else can you find something like this in sports? With due respect, for participation and connection to the territory, I see only two possible comparisons: the New York Marathon and the Palio of Siena. Mix them together, and you will discover the spirit of the Barcolana.”

And there may be another added value: in those ten days of celebration, the Barcolana is not just about sports...

Any other projects or dreams for future growth?

“The ambitious plan for the Barcolana to launch innovative projects for the city that stem from the sea. Trieste is a Karst city with hidden energies, destined to emerge in the sea. Our dream is to establish our village, now squeezed between the square and the waterfront, in the new Trieste that will rise in what is still called the Old Port but must become a vibrant port. Barcolana would love to help make this dream come true.”

Mollare tutto e andare a vivere su un’isola deserta, in libertà, nella natura, circondati dal mare. Per molti è il più classico dei sogni ad occhi aperti.

Peccato che le isole deserte non siano così a portata di mano. Così il modo più facile di realizzare questo sogno è prendere il largo con una barca, l’idea più vicina a un’isola tutta per sé, “un’isola mobile” con vista mare a 360°. Le barche d’ogni tipo e dimensione ormai si sono adeguate a stili e forme di comfort molto simili a quelle delle abitazioni. Gli spazi comuni delle navi da crociera ormai sono praticamente identici a quelli dei grandi alberghi o dei villaggi turistici.

imbarcazioni prevedendo l’ottimizzazione di spazi anche angusti. Al giorno d’oggi invece tutto è rivolto alla comodità, alla valorizzazione degli ambienti, ma soprattutto alla creazione dello stesso stile e delle stesse proporzioni delle case di terraferma.

È ovvio che questo stato di fatto è legato alle dimensioni della barca.

Dato che la progettazione delle barche è rivolta alla comodità e ai servizi, le dimensioni si adeguano agli stili. Eppure notiamo barche sempre più comode, dove gli spazi vengono sfruttati in modo più funzionale.

Gli arredi un tempo erano prodotti su misura seguendo le forme arrotondate della barca. Adesso, se le dimensioni lo permettono, abbiamo cucine, tavoli, divani, talvolta letti di serie.

In effetti anche lo stile decorativo si rifà molto di più ai gusti residenziali. Non a caso le maggiori aziende del design hanno integrato nel loro organico figure e reparti interamente dedicati alla nautica. Poi esiste anche un’altra possibilità. Vivere il mare a casa propria, con un progetto ispirato dal grande blu. Immaginare di trasformare la propria casa in un’isola meravigliosa. Ma questa è un’altra storia. A ciascuno il suo orizzonte.

Dropping everything and going to live on a deserted island, in freedom, in nature, surrounded by the sea. For many, it is the classic daydream. Too bad deserted islands are not so readily available. So the easiest way to make this dream come true is to set sail in a boat, the closest idea to having an island all to oneself, a “mobile island” with a 360° sea view. Boats of all types and sizes have now adapted to styles and forms of comfort very similar to those of homes. The common areas of cruise ships are now practically identical to those of large hotels or tourist resorts. There was once a way of designing the interior architecture of boats that involved optimizing even cramped spaces. Nowadays, everything is geared towards comfort, enhancing the spaces,

but above all creating the same style and proportions as land-based homes. It is obvious that this state of affairs is linked to the size of the boat. As boat design is focused on comfort and services, the dimensions adapt to the styles. Yet we notice increasingly comfortable boats, where the spaces are used in a more functional way. Furnishings were once custom-made following the rounded shapes of the boat. Now, if the dimensions allow, we have kitchens, tables, sofas, and sometimes even standard beds. Indeed, the decorative style also refers much more to residential tastes. It is no coincidence that the major design companies have integrated into their workforce figures and departments entirely dedicated to boating. Then there is also another possibility. Living the sea at home, with a project inspired by the deep blue. Imagining transforming one’s home into a wonderful island. But that is another story. To each their own horizon.

Franco Pace come Sigmund Freud, un parallelo indubbiamente azzardato, ma con diversi punti di contatto. Freud arriva a Trieste da Vienna, mentre Pace nasce a Tunisi e approda sulle coste dell’Adriatico quando ha solo un anno. Entrambi si dedicano agli studi scientifici, Freud verrà a Trieste per sezionare anguille e poi sarà il padre della psicanalisi; Pace incontrerà la fotografia per documentare le sue ricerche al microscopio su alcune specie ittiche e poi “inventerà” la fotografia di vela nel capoluogo giuliano.

Attento alla ricerca estetica e artistica, ma non per questo meno scientifico, preciso e metodico, Franco Pace è il decano dei fotografi nautici che hanno immortalato le barche a vela nella loro eleganza. Non è un caso infatti che Pace si sia sempre molto dedicato agli scafi in legno, sebbene la sua carriera cominci con le regate internazionali. È lui che firma il mitico reportage dell’edizione del 1979 del Fastnet, quando in condizioni estreme – affondarono quindici imbarcazioni e morirono diciotto persone – riuscì a testimoniare i momenti salienti della competizione. Nel suo archivio non mancano la Coppa America e mondiali Maxi, anche se la sua passione lo ha portato soprattutto verso le barche classiche.

Oltre che degli apprezzatissimi calendari, Pace è autore di una collana di sublimi monografie sui progettisti di inizio Novecento. Tra queste quella sul progettista scozzese William Fife III che lo ha

portato a diventare presenza abituale al raduno che ogni quattro anni si tiene in Scozia ed è dedicato in maniera esclusiva ai progetti della famiglia Fife. Tra le loro realizzazioni barche per committenti reali di varie casate europee, magnati e uomini d’affari, ma anche per i grandi appassionati dell’arte marinara come Eric Tabarly che Franco Pace immortalò alla Nioulargue del 1993 a bordo del Tuiga, spettacolare “legno” dei Casiraghi. Nonostante abbia girato il mondo Pace è sempre ha sempre mantenuto Trieste come sua base e la città nel 2009 lo ha omaggiato con una grande mostra al Salone degli Incanti, l’ex mercato centrale del pesce. Memorabile era il cuore dell’esposizione con una nitidissima

immagine aerea di Trieste vista dal mare lunga diciassette metri e alta tre. Una vita dedicata alla professione che a Franco Pace piace raccontare così:”Recentemente l’amico Frans Heesen, costruttore di grandi yachts, mi ha chiesto quante foto avessi scattato nel corso degli anni e come riuscivo ad ottenerle ferme e nitide. Gli ho spiegato che, se la luce lo permette, è meglio usare un tempo di scatto molto breve, almeno 1/1000 di secondo. Quanto al numero delle foto, non le avevo contate, potevo solo stimare a grandi linee, forse 5.000.000? Lui ci ha pensato un po’ su, poi con il suo umorismo tipicamente olandese: ‘Ma allora tu… in tutta la vita hai lavorato più o meno un’ora e mezza!’”.

Franco Pace è il decano dei fotografi nautici che hanno immortalato le barche a vela nella loro eleganza.

Franco Pace like Sigmund Freud, an undoubtedly daring parallel, but with several points of contact. Freud arrived in Trieste from Vienna, while Pace was born in Tunis and landed on the Adriatic coast when he was only one year old. Both dedicated themselves to scientific studies: Freud came to Trieste to dissect eels and later became the father of psychoanalysis; Pace encountered photography to document his microscopic research on some fish species and then “invented” sailboat photography in the Julian capital.

Attentive to aesthetic and artistic research, but no less scientific, precise, and methodical, Franco Pace is the dean of nautical photographers who have immortalized sailboats in their elegance. It is no coincidence that Pace has always dedicated himself to wooden hulls, although his career began with international regattas. He is the author of the legendary reportage of the 1979 edition of the Fastnet, when, under extreme conditions—fifteen boats sank, and eighteen people died—he managed to capture the key moments of the competition. His archive includes

the America’s Cup and Maxi World Championships, although his passion has mainly led him to classic boats. In addition to his highly appreciated calendars, Pace is the author of a series of sublime monographs on early 20th-century designers. Among these is one on the Scottish designer William Fife III, which led him to become a regular presence at the gathering held in Scotland every four years, dedicated exclusively to the projects of the Fife family. Among their creations are boats for royal clients from various European dynasties, magnates, and businessmen, as well as great enthusiasts of maritime art like Eric Tabarly, whom Franco Pace immortalized at the 1993 Nioulargue aboard the Tuiga, a spectacular wooden boat of the Casiraghis.

Despite having travelled the world, Pace has always kept Trieste as his base, and in 2009 the city honoured him with a major exhibition at the Salone degli Incanti, the former central fish market. The highlight of the exhibition was a memorable 17-meter-long, 3-meter-high aerial image of Trieste seen from the sea.

A life dedicated to the profession, which Franco Pace likes to describe as follows: “Recently, my friend Frans Heesen, builder of large yachts, asked me how many photos I had taken over the years and how I managed to get them sharp and clear. I explained that, if the light allows, it’s better to use a very short exposure time, at least 1/1000th of a second. As for the number of photos, I hadn’t counted them; I could only roughly estimate, maybe 5,000,000? He thought about it for a while, then with his typically Dutch humour: ‘So you... in your entire life, have worked more or less an hour and a half!’”

LE STORIE DEL MARE IN UN MUSEO

Sea stories in a museum

Che la storia di Trieste sia da sempre legata al mare è cosa nota; porto dell’Impero Austro Ungarico, è qui che il 17 maggio 1754 nacque l’Imperiale Regia Accademia di Commercio e Nautica che serviva da fucina di marinai che avrebbero solcato i mari di tutto il mondo. È qui che si sviluppò la Compagnia di navigazione Lloyd Austriaco, poi Triestino. Buona parte di questo viaggio nella storia può essere scoperto visitando il Museo del Mare ubicato negli spazi di quei magazzini in Porto Vecchio che un tempo servivano proprio come stoccaggio delle tante merci che arrivavano da Oriente, facilitati dal Canale di Suez, arteria di fondamentale importanza per il commercio triestino e realizzata grazie al contributo determinante del barone Revoltella, imprenditore e finanziere di origine veneziana.

Ma la storia di Trieste è legata pure alla nautica di diporto: è qui che si svolge la regata più affollata al mondo, la Barcolana che, dal 1969 riempie di vele il golfo di Trieste ogni seconda domenica d’ottobre. Da decenni il sabato antecedente la regata è dedicato alle Signore del mare, le barche in legno dal fascino intramontabile che hanno fatto la storia della vela grazie allo studio e all’inventiva di grandi progettisti navali. E uno di essi, Riccardo Pergolis, sarà il protagonista della prossima mostra curata dal Museo del Mare, esposizione che vuole dare inizio a un ciclo di approfondimenti dedicati al disegno dello yacht in Alto Adriatico, tema importante per Trieste e quindi per il suo Museo del Mare.

È lo stesso figlio Damiano che racconta come alla morte del padre si sia

ritrovato a chiedersi cosa fare dell’enorme quantità di libri, carte, disegni, studi e attrezzi che il padre aveva accumulato nel corso di tutta la vita. “Ho pensato che perlomeno quello che riguarda il mare e le barche in tutti i loro aspetti debba rimanere unito, per memoria storica e culturale, e che possa essere accessibile a studiosi e appassionati. Una biblioteca che non ha mai smesso di crescere e che, oltre a svariati altri argomenti, ha via via completato diversi aspetti del mare, della navigazione e della progettazione e costruzione di barche, nella tecnica, nell’arte e nella storia.”

Così, grazie alla mediazione di Ugo Pizzarello, curatore della mostra assieme a Damiano, questo tesoro della memoria diventa un patrimonio da custodire e da trasmettere.

Ripercorrendo il percorso biografico e professionale di Pergolis si metteranno in mostra progetti, studi e restauri che fino ad ora sono stati apprezzati solo da pochi appassionati e addetti ai lavori, inserendo questi materiali in un contesto storico e culturale che era al suo tramonto già nel momento in cui il percorso di Riccardo cominciava.

Tra le barche progettate e restaurate da Riccardo, che testimoniano conoscenze che hanno influenzato progettisti di maggior fama, c’è Flora, sloop bermudiano costruito dal cantiere triestino Arrigo Petronio su progetto di Riccardo Pergolis e presente alle edizioni di Barcolana Classic; o ancora il Nibbio, tipico caicio o lancia da lavoro caratteristica del golfo triestino; nel 1946 passò per le mani di Carlo Sciarrelli che modificò il piano di deriva mentre Riccardo Pergolis la dotò di un nuovo impianto velico che la fece diventare una portentosa barca da regata.

L’esposizione in programma da inizio settembre all’8 novembre 2024 sarà un viaggio tra la storia della progettazione di yacht tra Trieste e Venezia, con un significativo periodo di attività presso prestigiosi costruttori inglesi, soggiorni che hanno permesso a Riccardo Pergolis di collezionare un gran numero di volumi in lingua inglese.

Disegni, modelli, fotografie, estratti dai quaderni di appunti permetteranno di esporre l’avanzamento delle fasi progettuali e costruttive di alcuni yacht realizzati dall’architetto e che ancora oggi solcano i mari dell’Adriatico.

Riccardo Pergolis

Nato a Trieste da una famiglia di marinai e piloti, docente di traduzione alla Scuola Interpreti presso l’Università della città natale, si è dedicato allo studio dell’architettura navale dal Cinquecento all’Ottocento, e del naviglio minore a vela e a remi fino ai nostri giorni. Progettista e skipper di yacht da crociera e da competizione, ha partecipato sin da ragazzo a numerosissime regate. Durante il servizio quale ufficiale di complemento nella Marina Militare è stato imbarcato sulla nave “Vespucci” e sullo yacht “Corsaro II” (Regata Transatlantica 1962).

Born in Trieste to a family of sailors and pilots, Riccardo Pergolis was a professor of translation at the School of Interpreters at the University of his hometown. He dedicated himself to the study of naval architecture from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries and of small sailing and rowing vessels up to the present day. As a designer and skipper of cruising and racing yachts, he participated in numerous regattas from a young age. During his service as a reserve officer in the Navy, he was stationed on the ship “Vespucci” and the yacht “Corsaro II” (Transatlantic Regatta 1962).

It is well known that Trieste’s history has always been tied to the sea.

As the port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was here that the Imperial Royal Academy of Commerce and Nautical Studies was founded on May 17, 1754. This institution served as a training ground for sailors who would navigate the seas worldwide. It was also here that the Austrian Lloyd, later Triestino, Shipping Company developed. Much of this journey through history can be discovered by visiting the Museum of the Sea, located in the warehouses of the Old Port, which once stored the many goods arriving from the East, facilitated by the Suez Canal. This crucial artery for Trieste’s trade was realized thanks to the significant contribution of Baron Revoltella, a Venetian-born entrepreneur and financier.

But Trieste’s history is also linked to recreational boating: it hosts the world’s most crowded regatta, the Barcolana, which has filled the Gulf of Trieste with sails every second Sunday of October since 1969. For decades, the Saturday before the regatta has been dedicated to the Ladies of the Sea, the timeless wooden boats that have made sailing history thanks to the study and ingenuity of great naval designers. One of these designers, Riccardo Pergolis, will be the focus of the upcoming exhibition curated by the Museum of the Sea. This exhibition aims to kick off a series of indepth explorations of yacht design in the Upper Adriatic, an important topic for Trieste and its Museum of the Sea.

Damiano, Riccardo’s son, recounts how, after his father’s death, he found himself wondering what to do with the enormous amount of books, papers, drawings, studies, and tools his father had accumulated over his lifetime. “I thought that at least what concerns the sea and boats in all their aspects should remain together for historical and cultural memory and be accessible to scholars and enthusiasts. A library that has never stopped growing and that, besides various other subjects, has gradually completed different aspects of the sea,

navigation, and boat design and construction, in technique, art, and history.”

Thus, thanks to the mediation of Ugo Pizzarello, who curated the exhibition along with Damiano, this treasure of memory becomes a heritage to be preserved and shared.

By retracing Pergolis’s biographical and professional journey, the exhibition will showcase projects, studies, and restorations that until now have been appreciated only by a few enthusiasts and experts, placing these materials in a historical and cultural context that was already fading when Riccardo’s career began.

Among the boats designed and restored by Riccardo, which demonstrate knowledge that has influenced more famous designers, are Flora, a Bermuda sloop built by the Trieste shipyard Arrigo Petronio based on Pergolis’s design, present at the editions of Barcolana Classic; and Nibbio, a typical caicio or workboat characteristic of the Gulf of Trieste. In 1946, it passed through the hands of Carlo Sciarrelli, who modified the keel plan, while Riccardo Pergolis equipped it with a new sailing system, turning it into a powerful racing boat.

The exhibition, scheduled from early September to November 8, 2024, will be a journey through the history of yacht design between Trieste and Venice, including a significant period of activity with prestigious English builders. These stays allowed Riccardo Pergolis to collect a large number of books in English.

Drawings, models, photographs, and excerpts from notebooks will display the progress of the design and construction phases of some yachts created by the architect, which still sail the Adriatic Sea today.

Degustazioni in mezzo al golfo, gite su yacht d’epoca, snorkelling alla scoperta delle meraviglie dei fondali, e ancora canoa, sup ed escursioni in barca per raggiungere diverse località del territorio comodamente seduti, pronti a godersi il paesaggio in totale relax. Vivere il mare, dal mare, è un’esperienza irrinunciabile in estate a Trieste. Negli ultimi anni le proposte sono aumentate, per un ventaglio di idee ampio e variegato. Partendo dai collegamenti marittimi, la tratta Trieste-Barcola-GrignanoSistiana, servita dal Delfino Verde Navigazione, sarà attiva fino al 12 ottobre 2024, con gli attracchi fissati a Trieste sul molo Bersaglieri e a Sistiana sul molo centrale. Ferma anche a Barcola sul lato interno della diga foranea, e a Grignano sul molo centrale. Consente di raggiungere agevolmente, dal centro cittadino, alcune delle località più popolari del litorale, dedicate a sole, mare e tintarella. Sempre attivo tutto l’anno poi il collegamento marittimo tra Trieste e Muggia, realizzato dal Delfino Verde Navigazione, il tragitto dura 30 minuti. Si parte da Trieste sul Molo Bersaglieri e si arriva a Muggia all’interno della diga foranea. Da qui, con diverse partenze giornaliere, è possibile usufruire anche

del collegamento via mare per la zona balneare attrezzata di Boa Beach. I biglietti si comprano a bordo.

La linea Trieste - Grado è servita invece dalla Vidali Group/Apt Gorizia, operativa fino al 29 settembre 2024, con partenza a Trieste dal molo Audace e a Grado dal molo Torpediniere. Il viaggio dura circa 1 ora e mezza, e in caso in cui non ci siano le condizioni idonee per la navigazione, viene attivato un servizio sostitutivo di bus con carrello portabici. A Grado, al Molo Torpediniere, c’è poi la possibilità di proseguire il viaggio anche via mare con le linee dirette ad Aquileia o a Lignano. I biglietti si possono acquistare a bordo, in tutte le biglietterie Core TPL FVG e dalla app TPL FVG.

Sulle diverse imbarcazioni è possibile portare anche la bicicletta, in base alla disponibilità di posti stabilita da ogni compagnia e con specifiche tariffe applicate.

Nell’estate triestina 2024 ci sarà anche un supporto importante per triestini e turisti proprio sul fronte del mare, fornito dalla guida “Trieste mare e sapori”, realizzata dal Trieste Convention & Visitors Bureau, in italiano, inglese e tedesco, con una parte riservata ai riferimenti utili su spiagge, lungomare e stabilimenti pubblici.

Passando alle esperienze sul campo, da inizio a giugno al 13 ottobre sul sito Trieste.Green, sui canali di PromoTurismoFvg e su quelli di Slow Food Italia, saranno promossi oltre 100 eventi basati sulle 10 esperienze selezionate dal GAL. Quelle che riguardano il mare sono diverse, adatte a tutti. Come l’uscita in barca elettrica alla scoperta dell’Area Marina Protetta di Miramare e delle mitilicolture tra Grignano e Santa Croce che consente di scoprire un’area del golfo con il racconto a cura dello staff WWF per conoscere la ricca biodiversità presente sotto il livello dell’acqua. Dall’imbarcazione si potrà osservare anche la bellezza del Castello di Miramare e della costa, fino a Grignano e Santa Croce.

Tte, nell’esplorazione dei fondali marini dell’Area Marina Protetta di Miramare, un’altra proposta, particolarmente adatta anche ai bambini, è il seawatching, che fa parte dell’offerta di Slow Food Travel ed è un’attività che si realizza semplicemente nuotando in superficie, con maschera e boccaglio, in una zona sicura, dove poter ammirare l’ambiente marino in modo speciale. Per chi preferisce restare all’asciutto, senza rinunciare alla bellezza del mare tutto attorno, c’è la veleggiata d’epoca con aperitivo nel golfo di Trieste, un giro su un antico yacht, accompagnato dai vini slow e dai prodotti del Carso, in un mix speciale di enogastronomia, cultura e natura.

Per i più sportivi infine ci sono tante altre attività legate all’acqua, come

canoa, kitesurf o sup, declinate in diverse iniziative, tra corsi per principianti, lezioni per migliorare la tecnica per chi già pratica la disciplina o uscite di gruppo. Le scuole e le società che presentano servizi di questo tipo offrono anche l’attrezzatura. Non serve quindi portare nulla con sé, tranne il desiderio di avventura, tra divertimento e adrenalina.

Experiencing the sea from the sea is an unmissable experience in summer in Trieste. In recent years, the proposals have increased, offering a wide and varied range of ideas.

Starting with maritime connections, the Trieste-Barcola-GrignanoSistiana route, served by Delfino Verde Navigazione, will be active until October 12, 2024, with stops in Trieste at the Bersaglieri pier and in Sistiana at the central pier. It also stops at Barcola on the inner side of the breakwater and at Grignano on the central pier. This route allows easy access from the city centre to some of the most popular seaside destinations dedicated to sun, sea, and tanning.

The year-round maritime connection between Trieste and Muggia is also operated by Delfino Verde Navigazione, with a journey lasting 30 minutes. Departures are from Trieste at Molo Bersaglieri and arrivals in Muggia inside the breakwater. From here, with several daily departures, it is also possible to use the sea connection to the equipped beach area of Boa Beach. Tickets can be purchased on board.

The Trieste - Grado line is served by Vidali Group/Apt Gorizia, operating until September 29, 2024, with departures from Trieste at Molo Audace and from Grado at Molo Torpediniere. The journey lasts about 1.5 hours, and if navigation conditions are not suitable, a substitute bus service with a bicycle trailer is activated. In Grado, at Molo Torpediniere, there is the possibility to continue the journey by sea with direct lines to Aquileia or Lignano. Tickets can be purchased on board, at all Core TPL FVG ticket offices, and via the TPL FVG app.

Bicycles can also be brought on

board the various boats, depending on the availability of seats established by each company and with specific tariffs applied.

In the summer of Trieste 2024, an important support for Triestines and tourists on the sea front will be provided by the guide “Trieste mare e sapori” (Trieste sea and flavours), created by the Trieste Convention & Visitors Bureau, in Italian, English, and German, with a section dedicated to useful references on beaches, waterfronts, and public establishments.

From early June to October 13, over 100 events based on the 10 experiences selected by the GAL will be promoted on the Trieste.Green website (www. trieste.green), on PromoTurismoFvg channels, and on Slow Food Italia channels. Several of these experiences are related to the sea and are suitable for everyone. For example, the electric boat trip to discover the Miramare Marine Protected Area and the mussel farms between Grignano and Santa Croce, which allows you to explore an area of the gulf with a narration by the WWF staff to learn about the rich biodiversity below the water’s surface. From the boat, you can also admire the beauty of Miramare Castle and the coast, up to Grignano and Santa Croce.

For those who want to dive into exploring the seabed of the Miramare Marine Protected Area, another proposal, particularly suitable for children, is seawatching, which is part of the Slow Food Travel offer. This activity is done simply by swimming on the surface with a mask and snorkel in a safe area where you can admire the marine environment in a special way.

For those who prefer to stay dry, without giving up the beauty of the sea all around, there is the vintage sailing trip with aperitif in the Gulf of Trieste, a ride on an old yacht accompanied by slow wines and products from the Karst, in a special mix of food, culture, and nature.

Finally, for the more sporty, there are many other water-related activities, such as canoeing, kitesurfing, or SUP, offered in various initiatives, from beginner courses to lessons to improve techniques for those who already practice the discipline or group outings. The schools and companies offering these services also provide the equipment, so there is no need to bring anything with you, except the desire for adventure, fun, and adrenaline.

Il consorzio Lignano Sabbiadoro Gestioni propone durante tutta l’estate un ventaglio di escursioni gratuite sulle due ruote per conoscere più approfonditamente la località e i dintorni.

Animazione e miniclub in spiaggia, aree vip per una vacanza esclusiva, spiagge dog-friendly e accessibili anche con le carrozzine attraverso un ampio sistema di pedane.

Chi è alla ricerca di una camminata più sportiva, può optare per le uscite di Nordic Walking: armati di bastoncini si parte per lunghe passeggiate a piedi in spiaggia, lungo la laguna o all’ombra dei pini marittimi. Un’attività accessibile a tutti, anche ai più sedentari. Curiosa la variante Water Nordic Walking a Pineta, per proseguire la sessione di allenamento in acqua.

Un’esperienza unica e suggestiva è sicuramente la passeggiata a cavallo; una nuova avventura in una vicina tenuta nella laguna di Marano, adatta a tutti, che offre l’opportunità di vivere una giornata indimenticabile immersi nella natura, cavalcando lungo l’argine della laguna e avvicinandosi al magico mondo dei cavalli.

E il mare è sempre stato e sempre sarà polo di attrazione per il suo fascino.” Un luogo dunque dove compiere il proprio amore per l’orizzonte attraverso la navigazione marittima, sia essa connessa allo scambio commerciale o al turismo, partendo da una volontà di conoscenza. Proprio come quei cantastorie che prendevano il largo e trascrivevano la loro esperienza, accompagnati sempre da chi il mare lo sapeva leggere, anche per i futuri professionisti delle navi è necessario tessere una trama che permetta loro di conoscere sempre più in profondità le possibilità della navigazione, facendo del mare il proprio terreno di vita.

Translating the love for the sea is often thought to be the task of poets, writers, and storytellers, perhaps those who have lived by the sea, carried by the currents of the gulfs, by ancient tales that still vibrate today among sailors hoping to meet Ulysses’ sirens or Calypso’s cave.

But the sea is also a matter of love for those who have made it a place of exchange, commerce, logistics, and industry. It may sound less poetic compared to a storyteller’s tale, but only until you discover the Nautical Academy of Trieste at 32 Karl Ludwig Von Bruck Street, the ultimate meeting and exchange space for great lovers of navigation.

Envied by all of Italy and beyond, the Academy has been welcoming young students at the regional, national, and international levels since 2015. Some are recent high school graduates, while others are newly graduated in various disciplines ranging from engineering to architecture, from mathematics to computer science. These are young people who choose the Nautical Academy to put their learning into practice in the world of navigation. It is a high-level educational institution aimed at training future deck officers, high-grade naval designers, railway machinists, and much more. There is room for everyone, from those who wish to work in logistics to those who want to delve into cybersecurity in the maritime and port cluster.

Motivation and willpower are the main aspects evaluated for student selection, as they are considered fundamental elements to withstand the rhythms required by the sea, the discipline of temperament to learn the rhythms of ingenuity as well as those of waiting.

The Yacht Club Adriaco is the oldest sailing club in the Adriatic. Founded in 1903, it is housed in the old health building of the port. Its showcases display trophies and historic models, and the mosaic floor features the compass rose, but its heart is in the so-called “Canton of the Grisons.” No Swiss people here, but plenty of grey hair!

Active since 1896, the Rosenfeld sponge factory has been using traditional methods for washing and purifying sponges for four generations. The process ends with trimming, done strictly by hand to give each product a unique shape. You can choose your favourite at the company’s outlet (Strada per i Laghetti 5 - Muggia) and in selected stores like Drogheria Toso, which features a magical showcase set up with the sponge factory’s products. Specializing in custom-made wetsuits, L’Isola di Lara, run by free diver and artisan Lara Furlanich, is a small enterprise born from a love for the sea. Each wetsuit is meticulously crafted

Piazza Unità d’Italia, con la sua maestosa pianta rettangolare, si apre sul Golfo di Trieste conferendole l’aspetto di un salotto sul mare. Spiccano il palazzo della Luogotenenza austriaca con i caratteristici mosaici e il palazzo del Municipio con gli imponenti sottoportici, sotto i quali si affaccia l’elegante Laboratorio Ottico Dambrosi.

“Abbiamo due punti vendita –spiegano Roberta e Lorenzo Dambrosi–. Questo, “più frivolo” e maggiormente turistico, è centrato sull’occhiale e sugli accessori, mentre quello di Largo Santorio è storico ed è dedicato a servizi professionali come controlli della vista e applicazione di lenti a contatto”. Era il 1962 quando Narciso Dambrosi aprì il negozio in Largo Santorio, allora chiamato “Ottica Vedo”. Narciso, profugo istriano appena ventiduenne, fu costretto a riempirsi di cambiali per iniziare la sua avventura da quello che allora era ancora un piccolo bugigattolo.

“Erano tempi diversi, c’era più ottimismo di oggi ed ero convinto che ce l’avrei fatta”, ripeteva spesso, raccontano. Nel 1966 conobbe Annamaria: la futura moglie diede un contributo fondamentale allo sviluppo del negozio che presto cambiò nome in “Laboratorio Ottico Dambrosi”. Nel 1995 l’azienda passò in mano al figlio Lorenzo che avendo appena concluso il suo percorso formativo presso il College di Optometria di Verona, frequentato quasi esclusivamente da docenti d’eccellenza americani, portò in azienda le competenze acquisite nel campo dell’optometria e della contattologia professionale. Nel 2016, alla sede principale di Largo Santorio si affiancò il negozio di Piazza Unità che oggi offre una vasta scelta tra marche e collezioni: dalla udinese “Pugnale” a “Snob” di Varese e “Res Rei” di Treviso, da “Portrait” di Bassano del Grappa alla francese “Caroline Abram”. “Siamo ottici indipendenti e la scelta di prodotti di nicchia è dettata dal fatto che la globalizzazione sta uccidendo le piccole aziende con cui noi ci confrontiamo a livello umano”, concludono.

Piazza Unità d’Italia, with its majestic rectangular shape, opens onto the Gulf of Trieste, giving it the appearance of a living room by the sea. Notable landmarks include the palace of the Austrian Lieutenancy, with its characteristic mosaics, and the City Hall with its imposing arcades, under which the elegant Dambrosi Optician is located.

“We have two shops,” explain Roberta and Lorenzo Dambrosi. “This one, which is more ‘frivolous’ and tourist-oriented, focuses on eyewear and accessories, while the one in Largo Santorio is historic and dedicated to professional services like eye exams and contact lens fittings.”

It was in 1962 that Narciso Dambrosi opened the shop in Largo Santorio, then

called “Ottica Vedo.” Narciso, a 22-yearold Istrian refugee, had to rely heavily on promissory notes to start his venture and transform what was then a small cubbyhole. “Times were different back then, there was more optimism, and I was convinced I would succeed,” he often said, according to family stories.

In 1966, he met his future wife Annamaria, who played a crucial role in the development of the business which changed its name to “Laboratorio Ottico Dambrosi,” In 1995, the company was handed over to his son Lorenzo, who, having just completed his training at the College of Optometry in Verona, attended almost exclusively by excellent American professors, brought the skills acquired in the field of optometry and professional contact lens fitting to the company. In 2016, the main location in Largo Santorio was joined by the store in Piazza Unità, which today offers a wide selection of brands and collections: from the Udine-based ‘Pugnale’ to ‘Snob’ from Varese and ‘Res Rei’ from Treviso, from ‘Portrait’ of Bassano del Grappa to the French ‘Caroline Abram’. ‘We are independent opticians and the choice of niche products is driven by the fact that globalization is killing the small companies with which we interact on a human level,’ they conclude.

Come trasformare il marketing in un’attrazione turistica? A Trieste, la risposta è scritta sulle vetrine delle pescherie dove ogni giorno, freschi di giornata come i peschi sul bancone, vengono proposte frasi come “Mia nona ogni sabato la fa in forno un bel ribon, per quel a 80 ani la xe come Sciaron Ston!” o come “Dai fioi ai pensionati, dai portuai ai avocati, xe tuti come mati pei sardoni alabardati”. E ci spiace per il pubblico internazionale del nostro magazine e pure per i nostri zelanti traduttori. Si tratta di locuzioni che mettono insieme humor, sarcasmo, triestinissima ironia dialettale e saggezza popolare, come tali, intraducibili. Eppure è una delle più apprezzate forme di street art della nostra magnifica città, tutta affacciata sul mare e con una lunga tradizione gastronomica legata al pesce; scritte che si trovano dipinte con un evidente tratto bianco sulle vetrine di molte pescherie. Le più famose e attese, grazie ai social network, quelle del pescivendolo Davide Scala in via Conti e piazza Garibaldi, quest’ultima nata nel 1922 e insignita della targa d’oro come locale adibito a pescheria più antica di Trieste. A frequentarle sono soprattutto i triestini perché, a differenza di molti colleghi, qui si trova solo pesce intero o a filetti, pulito su richiesta e, al massimo, gustosi carpacci e tartare a scelta. Non una gastronomia, quindi, ma una eccellente pescheria dove la fanno da padroni i rinomati pesci del Golfo triestino.

Molte pescherie tuttavia, soprattutto negli ultimi anni, non si sono lasciate sfuggire l’opportunità di inserire tra un plateau di branzini e uno di orate, uno scomparto dedicato a prodotti già pronti, pensati per chi non ha molto tempo per cucinare e comunque ama nutrirsi con gusto e attenzione. Una delle più frequentate è la La Barcaccia Fish Academy, che si trova all’interno di Eataly sulle Rive triestine. Con molta professionalità e dedizione, da due generazioni e con un’esperienza di più di trent’anni la Barcaccia è una pescheria dove trovare il pesce più pregiato ma

anche varietà locali come i mitici sardoni (alici a pasta bianca). Da tempo è anche una gastronomia di mare dove si trovano una gran varietà di crudi, di marinati, di insalate di mare, e anche piatti caldi da gustare seduti con un buon calice di vino o da portarsi via. Anche tutti i punti vendita de “Il Gambero” (Strada di Fiume, via Battisti, piazza Goldoni) sono un’apprezzata gastronomia. Dario e Ela, acquistano al mercato ittico pesce fresco dando la precedenza al prodotto nostrano e rifornendosi da piccoli pescatori locali, dell’Istria e della Dalmazia. Oltre al classico banco pescheria, offrono una vasta scelta di antipasti e piatti pronti e confezionati nella loro cucina, abbinati a verdure di stagione. Interessante il servizio da asporto in sottovuoto, nel caso qualche visitatore volesse esportare un po’ di sapori triestini.

Uno dei primi a proporre pranzi e cene di pesce “chiavi in mano” è stata la pescheria “Vecchia Lussino” in via Giulia. La parte gastronomia offre una gran scelta di sughi come gamberi al curry e brodetto di seppie, fish burger, marinati agli agrumi tra cui sardoni , branzino e pesce spada . Le alici del Golfo di Trieste sono proposte anche in savor, ma si trovano anche primi piatti come pasticcio, zuppa di pesce e insalata di piovra.

Portarsi a casa i sapori del Golfo, insomma, a Trieste è facile. Di certo, molto più semplice che interpretare la verve umoristica che accompagna il duro lavoro dei pescivendoli e che, con l’aiuto del dialetto triestino, regala sorrisi e pillole di folklore.

In Trieste, the answer is written on the windows of the fishmongers, where every day, as fresh as the fish on the counter, phrases like “My grandmother bakes a nice ribbon fish every Saturday, at 80 years old she’s like Sharon Stone!” or “From kids to retirees, from dockworkers to lawyers, everyone goes crazy for Triestine sardines.” And we apologize to the international audience of our magazine and also to our diligent translators. These are expressions that combine humour, sarcasm, the unique irony of the Triestine dialect, and popular wisdom, and as such, are untranslatable. Yet it is one of the most appreciated forms of street art in our magnificent city, which is entirely facing the sea and has a long gastronomic

tradition linked to fish; writings that are painted with a noticeable white stroke on the windows of many fishmongers. The most famous and awaited ones, thanks to social networks, are those of fishmonger Davide Scala in Via Conti and Piazza Garibaldi, the latter born in 1922 and awarded the gold plaque as the oldest fishmonger in Trieste. They

are frequented mainly by the Triestines because, unlike many colleagues, here you will find only whole fish or fillets, cleaned on request, and at most, tasty carpaccios and tartares to choose from. Not a delicatessen, therefore, but an excellent fishmonger where the renowned fish of the Trieste Gulf reign supreme. However, many fishmongers, especially in recent years, have not missed the opportunity to include among the seabass and gilthead seabream platters, a section dedicated to ready-made products, designed for those who do not have much time to cook but still love to eat with taste and care. One of the most frequented is La Barcaccia Fish Academy, located inside Eataly on the Trieste Rive. With much professionalism and dedication, for two generations and with over thirty years of experience, La Barcaccia is a fishmonger where you can find the most prized fish but also local varieties like the legendary sardoni (anchovies). For some time, it has also been a seafood delicatessen where you can find a wide variety of raw, marinated, seafood salads, and even hot dishes to enjoy sitting with a good glass of wine or to take away.

All the “Il Gambero” stores (Strada di Fiume, Via Battisti, Piazza Goldoni) are also a well-appreciated delicatessen. Dario and Ela buy fresh fish at the fish market, giving priority to local products and sourcing from small local fishermen, from Istria and Dalmatia. In addition to the classic fishmonger counter, they offer a wide selection of appetizers and ready-made dishes prepared in their kitchen, combined with seasonal vegetables. The vacuum-sealed takeaway service is interesting, in case some visitors want to take a bit of Triestine flavours with them.

One of the first to propose turnkey fish lunches and dinners was the “Vecchia Lussino” fishmonger in Via Giulia. The delicatessen section offers a great choice of sauces like curry prawns and cuttlefish broth, fish burgers, citrus marinated sardines, seabass, and swordfish. The anchovies of the Trieste Gulf are also offered in ‘savor’, but you can also find first courses like lasagna, fish soup, and octopus salad.

Bringing home the flavours of the Gulf, in short, is easy in Trieste. Certainly, much simpler than interpreting the humorous verve that accompanies the hard work of the fishmongers and that, with the help of the Triestine dialect, brings smiles and pieces of folklore.

Ci troviamo lungo la Costiera Triestina, dove Pasquale Sorrentino gestisce da quasi due anni “Sorrentino”, un’incantevole trattoria di mare dal sapore casalingo che ha donato nuova vita allo storico ristorante “Tenda Rossa”.

“Non proponiamo una cucina gourmet –spiega–, ma piatti freschi e semplici alla portata di tutti, con materie prime di qualità e prezzi contenuti. Il nostro menu cambia ogni tre mesi in base alla stagionalità. Come piatto forte abbiamo gli antipasti misti di pesce e le crudités, ma non mancano i classici spaghetti con le vongole e i paccheri scampi e pomodorini. Molto richieste sono anche la frittura mista e i pescati del giorno”. Per concludere, non si può rinunciare al cannolo scomposto e al limoncello di casa.

Pasquale è originario dell’entroterra vesuviano, del paese di Somma Vesuviana, territorio di contadini che offre prodotti molto tipici.

“Da ragazzino scelsi l’alberghiero per la mia grande passione per la cucina –racconta–. Credo che anche tramite il cibo si possa donare l’amore che si sente dentro. Arrivato a Trieste ho collaborato con diversi chef locali che mi hanno trasmesso la cultura e la bellezza dei prodotti del Carso e del mare, fonte di ispirazione continua. E così, ho unito i gusti, i sapori, i profumi delle mie

origini partenopee alla storia e ai piatti storici triestini”. L’avventura di Pasquale a Trieste è iniziata con l’apertura del locale Joia, nel 2014, che si trova in Riva T. Gulli, di fronte a Eataly, con un carattere più sofisticato.

“La trattoria di mare Sorrentino” può diventare il luogo ideale anche per un aperitivo rinforzato in compagnia e offre la possibilità di organizzare eventi come compleanni e matrimoni.

“Anche il direttore di sala Luigi è sempre pronto ad accogliervi con un sorriso!”, conclude Pasquale.

The terraces perched over the sea and the romantic atmosphere provide tranquillity from the very first moments. We are along the Trieste Coastline, where Pasquale Sorrentino has been managing “Sorrentino,” a charming, homely seafood trattoria, for nearly two years, breathing new life into the historic “Tenda Rossa” restaurant.

“We don’t offer gourmet cuisine,” he explains, “but fresh and simple dishes accessible to everyone, using quality ingredients at reasonable prices. Our menu changes every three months based on seasonal availability. Our specialties include mixed seafood appetizers and crudités, but we also serve classic spaghetti with clams and paccheri with scampi and cherry tomatoes. Our mixed fried seafood and daily catches are also highly requested.” To finish off, you can’t miss the deconstructed cannolo and homemade Limoncello.

Pasquale hails from Somma Vesuviana in the Vesuvian hinterland, a region known for its distinctive agricultural products.

“As a young boy, I chose culinary school because of my deep passion for cooking,” he recounts. “I believe that through food, you can share the love you feel inside. When I arrived in Trieste, I worked with several local chefs who taught me about the culture and beauty of the Karst and sea products, which are a constant source of inspiration. I’ve combined the tastes, flavours, and aromas of my Neapolitan origins with the history and traditional dishes of Trieste.” Pasquale’s adventure in Trieste began with the opening of Joia in 2014, located on Riva T. Gulli, opposite Eataly, which has a more sophisticated character.

“The Sorrentino seafood trattoria” is also an ideal spot for a hearty aperitif with friends and offers the possibility to organize events like birthdays and weddings.

Ormai l’avrete capito. Se vi parliamo di pesce vi parliamo di quello più stagionale e sostenibile del golfo di Trieste. Specie meno predilette, meno gettonate, a volte dimenticate, eppure deliziose, che ancora abbondano nei nostri mari e sono pescate da imbarcazioni di piccola taglia con metodologie meno impattanti. Nel loro sapore sono racchiuse storie e racconti del nostro territorio.

Anche il pesce povero però oggi non è più regalato. Sintomo che, seppur ancora abbondante, anche qui ci troviamo di fronte a scarsità di pescato rispetto a un tempo. Non possiamo e non dobbiamo stancarci di ripeterlo, per capirlo bene: i nostri mari vivono un periodo di grandissima fragilità, anche dire con certezza cos’è sostenibile è sempre più complesso perché le implicazioni sono molteplici, all’interno di ecosistemi che cambiano velocemente. Ma il concetto è chiaro, smettiamola di scegliere i soliti pesci e informiamoci su quelli meno a rischio. È con questo spirito che vi proponiamo le nostre ricette garantendovi sapori autentici e nostrani, soprattutto affidandosi a pescherie e pescivendoli che supportano i piccoli pescatori artigianali del territorio. I pochissimi rimasti…

Nobiltà povera

Iniziamo, dunque, elencando le specie estive da prediligere. Seppie, innanzitutto, che a inizio estate abbondano. Mentre i calamari, che nella testa di molti fa tanto estate, andrebbero consumati a inizio autunno. Tra i pesci, andate a caccia di riboni (detti anche pagelli fragolini), suri (o sugarelli), papaline (la saraghina o spratto) e sgombri, che da noi sono più delicati e molto ambiti. E non dimenticate i cefali, di cui esistono molte specie.

Va sfatato un mito sui cefali (che noi triestini chiamiamo “zievoli”). Una brutta nomea legata al passato, alla loro capacità di adattarsi ad ambienti diversi trattenendo nelle loro carni gli odori dei luoghi che attraversano. Nella Trieste degli anni 70 e 80 si diceva puzzassero di petrolio, molto probabilmente perché venivano pescati nell’area del porto nuovo e del canale navigabile… zone industriali non propriamente conosciute per le acque cristalline.

Ma i cefali che oggi troviamo in pescheria provengono da acque salubri, e nulla hanno a che spartire con i loro colleghi “industriali”. E comunque, c’è un’altra nota storica da tenere presente. Dalle nostre parti si faceva la tratta dei cefali, una pesca tradizionale a carattere collettivo, soprattutto sulle coste istriane. Si chiudeva la baia con una rete che poi veniva tirata a forza di braccia fino ad intrappolare in massa i cefali. Ovviamente, non è soltanto importante scegliere il pesce, ma anche capire la qualità del mare in cui vive.

Nel nord adriatico vivono 5 diverse specie, il cefalo bosega (labron), il cefalo dorato (lotregno, lotregan), il calamita ( cavastello , caustelo , botolo), il verzelata (cefalo musino) e il cefalo volpina (muggine, mecia). La volpina, lo stesso da cui in Sardegna si ricava la deliziosa bottarga, e il lotregano, che è molto simile al branzino, sono considerati i più pregiati. Cotti al forno, al vapore, in padella o alla griglia non si può davvero sbagliare.

E allora via di ricette! Inauguriamo l’estate con una griglia di zievoli , accompagnati da una salsa allo yogurt ed erbe e da un’insalata di pomodori. E dopo un piatto così sano, estivo e leggero vi facciamo chiudere con un dolce sfiziosissimo che celebra le pesche mature e le mandorle. Una crostata frangipane alle pesche.

Raccomandazione canonica: scegliendo con cura gli ingredienti come tornaconto avrete sapore, delizia, poesia.

Zievoli alla griglia (ricetta per 2 persone)

2 cefali da 300g l’uno circa 2 rametti di rosmarino

2 fette di limone

Olio extravergine d’oliva

500g pomodori di diversi colori e varietà

Qualche foglia di basilico

Sale e pepe

Olio extravergine d’oliva

300g yogurt greco

1 spicchio d’aglio

Sale e pepe

Olio extravergine d’oliva

Un mazzo di erbe miste (prezzemolo, erba cipollina, menta, timo, maggiorana, basilico, origano)

Squamare ed eviscerare i pesci eliminando bene le interiora. Spennellare i pesci con rosmarino imbevuto di olio evo, riempirne le pance con il rosmarino utilizzato ed il limone. Scaldare bene la griglia, deve essere ben calda. Grigliare per circa 8-10 minuti per lato, girando una volta sola.

Preparare a parte un’insalata di pomodori, idealmente di diverse varietà e colori, e condire a piacere con sale, pepe e olio evo.

Per la salsa da abbinare al pesce, unite allo yogurt l’aglio sminuzzato e le erbe tritate, con sale, pepe, olio evo, e mescolare bene.

Grilled Zievoli (recipe for 2)

2 mullets, about 300g each 2 sprigs of rosemary 2 slices of lemon

Extra virgin olive oil

500g tomatoes of various colours and varieties

A few basil leaves

Salt and pepper

Extra virgin olive oil

300g Greek yogurt

1 garlic clove

Salt and pepper

Extra virgin olive oil

A bunch of mixed herbs (parsley, chives, mint, thyme, marjoram, basil, oregano)

Scale and gut the fish, thoroughly removing the entrails. Brush the fish with rosemary soaked in extra virgin olive oil, fill their bellies with the used rosemary and lemon. Heat the grill well, it must be very hot. Grill for about 8-10 minutes per side, turning only once. Separately, prepare a tomato salad, ideally of various varieties and colours, and season to taste with salt, pepper, and extra virgin olive oil. For the sauce to accompany the fish, combine the minced garlic and chopped herbs with the yogurt, with salt, pepper, extra virgin olive oil, and mix well.

By now, you will have understood. When we talk to you about fish, we talk about the most seasonal and sustainable fish from the Gulf of Trieste. Lesser-preferred, less popular, sometimes forgotten, yet delicious species that still abound in our seas and are caught by small boats using less impactful methods. Their flavour encapsulates stories and tales of our territory.

Even the so-called “poor fish” today is no longer given away. This indicates that, although still abundant, we also face a scarcity of fish compared to the past. We cannot and must not tire of repeating it to understand it well: our seas are experiencing a period of great fragility, and even saying with certainty what is sustainable is increasingly complex because the implications are numerous within rapidly changing ecosystems. But the concept is clear, let’s stop choosing the usual fish and inform ourselves about those less at risk. With this spirit, we offer you our recipes, guaranteeing authentic and local flavours, especially by relying on fishmongers and vendors who support the small artisanal fishermen of the territory. The very few that are left...

So, let’s start by listing the summer species to prefer. Cuttlefish, first of all, which are abundant at the beginning of summer. While squids, which many associate with summer, should be consumed at the beginning of autumn. Among fish, look for red mullets (also known as goatfish), horse mackerels (or jacks), sprats (sardines or sprats), and mackerels, which are more delicate and highly sought after here. And don’t forget mullets, of which there are many species.

debunked. A bad reputation linked to the past, to their ability to adapt to different environments, retaining the smells of the places they pass through. In the Trieste of the 70s and 80s, it was said they smelled of oil, most likely because they were caught in the area of the new port and the navigable canal... industrial zones not exactly known for their crystal-clear waters. But the mullets we find in fishmongers today come from healthy waters and have nothing to do with their “industrial” colleagues. Moreover, there’s another historical note to keep in mind. In our area, mullet fishing was a traditional collective activity, especially on the Istrian coasts. The bay was closed off with a net that was then pulled by hand until the mullets were mass-trapped. Obviously, it’s not only important to choose the fish but also to understand the quality of the sea in which it lives.

In the northern Adriatic, there are 5 different species: the thicklip grey mullet, the golden grey mullet, the leaping mullet, the flathead grey mullet, and the thinlip mullet. The thinlip mullet, the same from which the delicious bottarga is made in Sardinia, and the golden grey, which is very similar to sea bass, are considered the most prized. Baked, steamed, pan-fried, or grilled, you really can’t go wrong.

So let’s get to the recipes! We kick off the summer with grilled zievoli, accompanied by a yogurt and herb sauce and a tomato salad. And after such a healthy, summery, and light dish, we finish with a delicious dessert that celebrates ripe peaches and almonds: a peach frangipane tart.

Standard recommendation: carefully choosing the ingredients will reward you with flavour, delight, and poetry.

Crostata frangipane e pesche

8 fette

Per la frolla:

175g farina 00

85g burro freddo a tocchetti

20g zucchero 2 tuorli

Per il ripieno:

100g zucchero

140g burro 2 uova

140g farina di mandorle

50g farina 00 3 pesche mature

Per la pasta frolla, strofinare insieme la farina e il burro fino a ottenere un composto sabbioso, quindi incorporare lo zucchero. Aggiungere 1 tuorlo d’uovo e 1 cucchiaino d’acqua, seguito dall’altro tuorlo e da un altro 1 cucchiaino d’acqua. Maneggiare il minimo indispensabile per ottenere un impasto amalgamato. Avvolgere nella pellicola trasparente e far riposare in frigorifero per 30 minuti. Preriscaldare il forno a 180°C ventilato. Stendere la pasta su una superficie leggermente infarinata fino a ottenere una dimensione sufficiente per rivestire una teglia per crostate da 23 cm. Se l’impasto si rompe, basta ripararlo chiudendo eventuali fori o crepe a mano. Adagiare nello stampo imburrato, tagliare l’eccesso di pasta per avere i bordi uniformi e fare dei buchini alla base con una forchetta. Coprire con un foglio di carta forno e riempire con un peso, quindi infornare per 20 minuti fino a quando non diventa dorata e biscottata. Mentre la pasta cuoce, preparare il ripieno. Montare lo zucchero e il burro insieme fino a ottenere una pasta chiara. Aggiungere le uova, poi le mandorle e la farina. Versare nella teglia di pasta frolla, disporre a motivo (esempio: a raggiera) le fette di pesca sulla parte superiore, e infornare per 30-40 minuti fino a quando non diventa dorata. Servire tiepida, buonissima anche fredda.

For the pastry:

175g all-purpose flour

85g cold butter, cubed 20g sugar

2 egg yolks

For the filling:

100g sugar

140g butter

2 eggs

140g almond flour

50g all-purpose flour

3 ripe peaches

For the pastry, rub the flour and butter together until you get a sandy mixture, then incorporate the sugar. Add 1 egg yolk and 1 teaspoon of water, followed by the other yolk and another teaspoon of water. Handle the mixture as little as possible to get a cohesive dough. Wrap in plastic wrap and let rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a size sufficient to line a 23cm tart tin. If the dough breaks, just repair it by closing any holes or cracks by hand. Place in the greased tin, trim the excess dough to get even edges, and prick the base with a fork. Cover with a sheet of parchment paper and fill with a weight, then bake for 20 minutes until golden and biscuity. While the pastry is baking, prepare the filling. Beat the sugar and butter together until you get a light paste. Add the eggs, then the almonds and flour. Pour into the pastry shell, arrange the peach slices on top in a pattern (e.g., in a fan), and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden. Serve warm, delicious even cold.

Il mondo degli specialty coffee rappresenta una nicchia raffinata all’interno dell’universo del caffè. Ma cos’è esattamente uno specialty coffee? Questa espressione si riferisce a caffè di altissima qualità, coltivati in condizioni ideali e trattati con meticolosa cura in ogni fase del processo produttivo, dalla piantagione fino alla tazza. Gli specialty coffee si distinguono per le loro caratteristiche organolettiche uniche, frutto di una combinazione di fattori quali il terroir, la varietà botanica e le tecniche di lavorazione. A differenza dei caffè commerciali, che spesso sono miscele di chicchi provenienti da diverse regioni venduti in base a una descrizione, gli specialty coffee sono singole origini di specie Arabica con una carta d’identità ben precisa e selezionati per esprimere il meglio le loro caratteristiche. Navigare nel mondo degli specialty coffee può sembrare complesso a causa di una terminologia molto specifica che usa termini inglesi o comunque stranieri. Un glossario delle parole più comuni utilizzate in questo ambito sarà quindi uno strumento prezioso per chiunque desideri esplorare e godere al meglio di questo mondo. Una sorta di bussola per navigare in questo oceano e apprezzare le sfumature che rendono ogni specialty coffee un’esperienza unica e indimenticabile.

A come Arabica, ma anche Aeropress

Quando si parla di specialty si intendono solo di specie Arabica, che è quella più diffusa a livello globale. Per evitare confusione per la Robusta (la seconda più diffusa) si usa il termine Fine. Lo specialty coffee si distingue anche però per i metodi alternativi all’espresso. Uno di questi è l’Aeropress, uno stantuffo di plastica per prepararsi un ottimo caffè in movimento. È infatti pensato per chi viaggia ma non sono poche le caffetterie che lo propongono. Esiste anche un famosissimo campionato mondiale per questo metodo di preparazione.

B come blend (e non miscela)

Quando si parla di specialty ci si distingue dai caffè commerciali anche dal nome, quindi non si dice Monorigine ma Singola origine e per il termine miscela si usa spesso l’inglese blend.

C come Cortado (ma non era Capo in B?)

È a tutti gli effetti quello che a Trieste è famosissimo come Capo in B, ma che nel resto del mondo viene chiamato “cortado”. Un espresso macchiato servito in un bicchiere sfaccettato.

D come drip

Ovvero i metodi alternativi all’espresso, che sono molto spesso dei percolatori e hanno vari nomi, spesso stranieri. Nel caso l’estrazione si faccia con acqua fredda si parla di “cold drip”. Volete essere veramente alternativi? Usate una cuccuma (caffettiera napoletana) che è uno dei più antichi metodi drip!

E come espresso

Perché spesso si pensa che il settore degli specialty sia contro l’espresso, ma non è così. Come per qualsiasi preparazione un’ottima materia prima sarà adatta a qualsiasi stile di preparazione.

F come Filter coffee

Non chimatelo “caffè Americano”!

Perché si chiama filter coffee o caffè filtro, ed è tra i sistemi di estrazione più utilizzati per gli specialty coffee! Potete variare tra Chemex, V60, Cafec, Melitta e molti altri ancora. Qual è il migliore? Quello che più vi somiglia.

G come Gesha (o Geisha) No, non c’entra col giappone. È una delle singole varietà più conosciute e costose al momento nel settore degli specialty. Perché sì, di un caffè di alta qualità si conosce anche la varietà botanica.

A for Arabica and Aeropress

Specialty coffee exclusively refers to Arabica species, the most globally prevalent type. To avoid confusion with Robusta (the second most common species), the term “Fine” is used. Specialty coffee also stands out for its alternative brewing methods to espresso. One of these is the Aeropress, a plastic plunger used to make excellent coffee on the go. It’s designed for travellers, but many cafes offer it. There’s even a famous world championship for this brewing method.

B for Blend

In the specialty coffee world, terms differ from commercial coffee. Instead of “Monorigine” (mono-origin), we use “ Singola origine ” (single origin), and for “miscela” (blend), the English term “blend” is often used.

C for Cortado

C’è un alimento che più di altri ci fa tornare bambini. Lo chiamiamo alimento, per darci un tono, ma in realtà è un divertimento. Il gelato accompagna i nostri piccoli, grandi momenti di festa. Quelli in compagnia, ma anche quelli personalissimi, le nostre piccole gratificazioni, le nostre piccole consolazioni. Del resto una pallina non è che lo sviluppo tridimensionale di un sorriso, proprio come il marchio di una celebre marca di gelati. Un gelato mette sempre di buon umore.

Un classico a Trieste è la berlina, una pallina di gelato o due, tanta panna e una guarnizione a scelta, cioccolato, menta, frutta fresca, etc. etc. , secondo la fantasia del gelataio. Tutto in un bicchiere, da gustare sul posto o passeggiando in città.

Un po’ più in là, dopo piazza Libertà, in via Ghega, si incontra Zampolli [2] con il suo “Buon gelato artigianale”. Il posto è facile da trovare, anche senza di

l’ausilio del navigatore dello smartphone: è proprio là dove c’è tutta quella gente sul marciapiede! L’interno è elegante, la scelta è infinita. Originalissimi i gusti “Senza nome”. Raccomandatissime le granite! All’ingresso fa bella mostra di sé l’articolo di un vecchio giornale americano che definiva il gelato di Zampolli “the best in the world”!

Altrettanto folto è il pubblico che gusta coni e coppette da Marco [3], gelateria che ha coniato un aggettivo tutto suo: il gelato più spazzziale di Trieste!

La fila di persone è una garanzia di bontà e qualità anche da Jazzin [4], “la pasticceria del gelato”, con il mastro gelataio Luigi, il papà di una vera e propria new wave delle gelaterie in città, capace di unire tradizione e sperimentazione. Ai curiosi del gusto suggeriamo i Dopocena, con le loro intriganti connessioni di sapori di creme e frutti. Il nome Jazzin viene pronunciato all’italiana. Ma la musica jazz non c’entra, c’entra il ghiaccio, che in dialetto triestino diventa iazo, che a sua volta dà il nome agli iazini, cioè i ghiaccini da mettere sotto le scarpe in caso di bora e ghiaccio, come l’esemplare che fa bella mostra di sé sul banco.

In via Diaz, esattamente di fronte al Museo Revoltella, e in via Trento, in una zona di grande passaggio, ha aperto Nicola [5, 6, 7], la gelateria famosa per la bontà del tiramisù prodotto nella sede centrale di via Baiamonti.

A due passi da piazza Unità (e anche in viale XX Settembre [8]) c’è la Dolceria Gangemi [9], portabandiera di una tradizione della gelateria e della pasticceria più tipicamente mediterranea. A proposito, “il Viale”, come lo chiamano

i triestini, è l’area con la più alta concentrazione di gelaterie in città. Le presenze storiche sono Madison [10] e Pipolo [11] (da ritrovare anche a Barcola [12]), mentre in tempi più recenti è arrivata la gelateria De Lorenzi [13]. Perché non provarle tutte e stilare la propria classifica personale?

In via Battisti Oggi - Officina Gelato Gusto Italiano [14] è una gelateria contemporanea che con il laboratorio a vista mette bene in evidenza la qualità delle sue scelte.

Nella zona delle rive il molo Pescheria è presidiato dal Pinguino [15], il cui nome deriva dal pinguino Marco, che abitava qualche tempo fa nel vicino Aquario (ebbene sì, a Trieste lo scriviamo senza la “c”) e che i triestini ricordano sempre con un sorriso.

Tra piazza Hortis e Cavana, Natura Gelato [16] è una certezza per chi cerca dolci delizie gelate biologiche, mentre la spettacolare cioccolateria Chocolat [17] d’estate diventa gelateria, altrettanto golosa!

Dall’altra parte della città, si trova Udevalla [18], la gelateria più nascosta, ma il viaggio ripaga pienamente la curiosità. Ancora un po’ più in là, l’Oasi del gelato [19] offre piacere e refrigerio nelle calde serate d’estate… E ancora più in là, più su, a Opicina, c’è Arnoldo [20], per finire in bellezza, proprio come abbiamo cominciato!

There is one food more than others that takes us back to our childhood. We call it food to give ourselves a tone, but in reality, it is pure fun. Ice cream accompanies our small and big festive moments. Those in company, but also those very personal ones, our little rewards, our little consolations. After all, a scoop is nothing but the three-dimensional development of a smile, just like the logo of a famous ice cream brand. Ice cream always puts you in a good mood.

A classic in Trieste is the “ berlina,” a scoop or two of ice cream, lots of whipped cream, and a topping of choice–chocolate, mint, fresh fruit, etc., depending on the ice cream maker’s creativity. All in a glass, to be enjoyed onsite or while strolling through the city.

To the traveller who has just gotten off the train, Trieste welcomes you with two of its historic gelaterias. On Viale Miramare, there’s the closest and the oldest, Gelateria Arnoldo [1], which has just celebrated its first century of life. The interiors are carefully maintained as they were in the past. The flavours are classic, without forgetting novelties like the Veronica flavour (cake base, caramel, and crunchy peanuts) in honour of Omar Arnoldo’s daughter, the heir to the family tradition, or the Centennial Ice Cream, with a vanilla base, baked apples, cinnamon, and puff pastry, a reinterpretation of typical mountain flavours like strudel.

A bit further on, after Piazza Libertà, on Via Ghega, you find Zampolli [2] with its “Good Artisan Gelato.” The place is easy to find, even without a smartphone navigator: it’s right where all those people are on the sidewalk! The interior is elegant, the selection is endless. The “Nameless” flavours are very original. The granitas are highly recommended! At the entrance, there’s an article from an old American newspaper that describes Zampolli’s ice cream as “the best in the world”!

Equally crowded is the public enjoying cones and cups at Marco [3], a gelateria that has coined its own adjective: Trieste’s most space-like ice cream! The

line of people is a guarantee of goodness and quality also at Jazzin [4], “the ice cream patisserie,” with master ice cream maker Luigi, the father of a true new wave of gelaterias in the city, capable of combining tradition and experimentation. For the curious taste buds, we suggest the After Dinner flavours, with their intriguing combinations of creams and fruits. The name Jazzin is pronounced the Italian way. But jazz music has nothing to do with it, it’s about ice, which in the Triestine dialect becomes “ iazo,” which in turn gives the name to “iazini,” the little ice spikes to put under shoes in case of bora wind and ice, like the sample proudly displayed on the counter.

On Via Diaz, directly opposite the Revoltella Museum, and on Via Trento, in a busy area, Nicola [5, 6, 7] has opened, a gelateria famous for the goodness of its tiramisu produced at the main location on Via Baiamonti.

A stone’s throw from Piazza Unità (and also on Viale XX Settembre [8]) there’s Dolceria Gangemi [9] , the standard-bearer of a tradition of gelateria and pastry making that’s typically Mediterranean. By the way, “Il Viale,” as the locals call it, is the area with the highest concentration of gelaterias in the city. The historic presences are Madison [10] and Pipolo [11] (also found in Barcola [12]), while more recently Gelateria De Lorenzi [13] has arrived. On Via Battisti, Oggi - Officina Gelato Gusto Italiano [14] is a contemporary gelateria that with its open-view laboratory highlights the quality of its choices.

guarded by Pinguino [15], whose name derives from Marco the penguin, who lived some time ago in the nearby aquarium (yes, in Trieste we write it without the “c”), and who the Triestini always remember with a smile.

On the other side of the city, there’s Udevalla [18], the most hidden gelateria, but the journey fully rewards the curiosity. Even further, L’Oasi del Gelato [19] offers pleasure and refreshment on hot summer evenings... And even further up, in Opicina, there’s Arnoldo [20], to end in beauty, just as we began!

Per quest’anno non cambiare, stessa spiaggia stesso mare’ cantava Piero Focaccia negli anni Sessanta, anni del boom economico e anni in cui Grado era già una destinazione turistica di riferimento sul litorale Adriatico. La sua storia turistica inizia, infatti, nel 1892 quando, ai tempi dell’Impero austro-ungarico l’allora imperatore Francesco Giuseppe proclamò la cittadina “stazione di cura e soggiorno”.

Grado ha compiuto da poco 130 anni, ma ha saputo nel tempo coniugare tradizione e innovazione che ancora oggi la rendono una meta ambita, inserita nel 2024 tra le 15 migliori spiagge d’Europa secondo una classifica di European Best Destinations.

Graisani de Palù, “Escursione al casone di Mota Safon”, un itinerario che cinefili e appassionati di natura non possono perdersi. I buongustai, invece, segneranno in agenda l’escursione esclusiva Laguna segreta, un pic nic su un’isola, raggiungibile attraverso canali poco conosciuti e nascosti. Imperdibile, poi, l’isola di Barbana, uno dei punti iconici della località, dove tutt’oggi risiede

l’omonimo santuario mariano; ancora abitata da una comunità di monaci benedettini è collegata tutto l’anno via mare grazie a un servizio marittimo in partenza dall’Isola della Schiusa.

Chi volesse approfondire la storia dei casoni e le tradizioni lagunari potrà far visita al Museo della Pesca e della Civiltà Lagunare che custodisce e tramanda la memoria e la cultura della civiltà casonera. Aperto da quest’anno, è visitabile liberamente o tramite visita guidata.

Un altro modo per conoscere il borgo marinaro e i suoi dintorni è sicuramente in sella ad una bici. Qui termina la ciclovia Alpe Adria (FVG1), la più conosciuta via cicloturistica del Friuli Venezia Giulia che parte da Salisburgo, in Austria, e dopo 425 chilometri raggiunge Grado. Da qui passa anche la ciclovia del Mar Adriatico (FVG2) che collega la località con due riserve naturali regionali costeggiando il mare. Da giugno a settembre, la riserva naturale Foce dell’Isonzo è raggiungibile anche grazie all’escursione Bus Natura, ogni martedì pomeriggio.

Se invece si vuole pedalare fuori porta, le due linee marittime LignanoGrado e Aquileia-Grado sono la

combinazione perfetta per attraversare la laguna, navigare lungo la costa, scoprire i borghi marinari portando con sé la propria bici. Chi volesse spingersi un po’ più nel cuore del Friuli Venezia Giulia può utilizzare il servizio bici+bus e raggiungere, così, Udine, Gorizia e il Collio.

La bici, però, è solo uno dei tanti modi per vivere una vacanza attiva all’aria aperta: Grado offre infatti la possibilità di praticare svariate attività sportive sia a terra che in acqua: tennis, padel, skateboard, basket e golf, ma anche attività sportive acquatiche a cominciare dal kitesurf. Grazie ai venti che la attraversano e grazie a un lunghissimo banco di sabbia che ne protegge un’ampia zona dalle onde, l’Isola del sole è uno spazio ideale per imparare oltre al kitesurf, il windsurf e l’e-foil. Non mancano le attività in spiaggia (beach volley, acqua-gym, vela, windsurf, kayak, yoga, SUP e nuoto) per divertirsi e mantenersi in forma. Non serve essere già degli esperti perché a Grado ci sono diverse associazioni sportive che insegnano ai neofiti direttamente sull’arenile. Fiore all’occhiello di questa destinazione è il suo centro storico caratterizzato da calli, vicoli e campielli in stile veneziano dove perdersi curiosando tra le vetrine delle botteghe artigiane –da scoprire anche attraverso il “Wine&Craft tour”, con alcune tappe nelle osterie per assaggiare alcuni dei migliori vini del territorio– o seguendo i profumi che fuoriescono dai ristoranti. When Piero Focaccia sang in the Sixties, years of the economic boom, “For this year, don’t change, same beach, same sea”, Grado was already a key tourist destination on the Adriatic coast. Another must-see is the island of Barbana, one of the iconic points of the resort, where the Marian Sanctuary stands; still inhabited by a community of Benedictine monks, it is connected year-round by a maritime service departing from the Isola della Schiusa.

Those wishing to delve deeper into the history of the casoni and lagoon traditions can visit the Museum of Fishing and Lagoon Civilization, which preserves and passes down the memory and culture of the casonera civilization. Opened this year, it can be visited freely or through guided tours.

Another way to explore this maritime village and its surroundings is by bike. The Alpe Adria Cycle Path (FVG1), the most well-known cycle route in Friuli Venezia Giulia, starts from Salzburg, Austria, and after 425 kilometres reaches Grado. The Adriatic Cycle Route (FVG2), which connects the town with two regional nature reserves along the coast, also passes through here. From June to September, the Isonzo River Mouth Nature Reserve can also be reached thanks to the Nature Bus excursion every Tuesday afternoon.

For those who prefer cycling out of town, the two maritime lines LignanoGrado and Aquileia-Grado are the perfect combination to cross the lagoon, cycle along the coast, and discover the maritime villages on your bike. Those wishing to venture further into the heart of Friuli Venezia Giulia can use the bike+bus service to reach Udine, Gorizia, and the Collio.

However, cycling is just one of the many ways to enjoy an active holiday in the open air: Grado also offers various sports activities both on land and in water: tennis, padel, skateboarding, basketball, and golf, as well as water sports such as kitesurfing. Thanks to the winds that sweep across it and a long sandbank that protects a wide area from the waves, the ‘Island of the Sun’ is an ideal space

for learning kitesurfing, windsurfing, and e-foiling. Beach activities (beach volleyball, aqua-gym, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, yoga, SUP, and swimming) are also available for fun and fitness. No prior expertise is needed, as there are several sports associations in Grado that teach beginners directly on the beach.

A jewel of this destination is its historic centre, characterised by Venetianstyle alleys, narrow streets, and small squares where one can lose themselves while browsing the shop windows of artisan boutiques— you can also discover through the Wine&Craft tour, with stops at osterias to taste some of the best local wines—or following the scents wafting from the restaurants. Among the culinary specialities to savour are boreto a la graisana, a humble dish originating from the need of fishermen living in the lagoon to use up leftover fish, which is still accompanied by white polenta, less refined and less expensive than yellow polenta. Or sepe sofegae, an exclusive variant of stewed cuttlefish, and el bisato in speo (spit-roasted eel). After dinner, enjoy a Santonego, an uplifting and meditative elixir made from sea wormwood, or a Gintonego, an excellent distillate from the heart of Grado.

Nella settimana di ferragosto il paese si veste letteralmente a festa; è il momento di “Alpenfest”, la ricorrenza in cui musiche, sapori e tradizioni dell’area dei tre Confini si uniscono. Via Roma, la strada principale della città ospita stand e bancarelle che propongono, tra l’altro, prodotti particolari di artigianato, delle piccole opere d’arte, mentre clou della manifestazione è la sfilata molto partecipata e sentita dei gruppi folkloristici della Valcanale e delle vicine Slovenia e Austria, testimonianza della convivenza culturale del territorio.

Quando agosto volge al termine è tempo di “Baite Aperte”: nell’ultimo fine settimana agostano due giornate sono dedicate alla natura, alla scoperta di antichi sapori, alla musica, all’allegria secondo la tradizione con l’ospitalità della gente di montagna. [IR]

Exhibitions, concerts, shows, festivals, and film screenings (dedicated to Julius Kugy on the 80th anniversary of his death) connect visitors to the rich history of this far north-eastern corner of Italy. Tours exploring Tarvisio’s past are held in historically significant locations, such as the Medieval Tower. This octagonal structure, part of the old fortifications built to defend against Ottoman raids, now overlooks the square and hosts prestigious exhibitions. Among the hosted exhibitions is “Maria Theresa, Majesty of a European Sovereign,” featuring paintings and period portraits from private European collections. This exhibition guides visitors through the connections between one of the most important rulers of the 18th century and the Valcanale region, considering how in 1759 the Empress became the owner of the entire Tarvisio Forest. Complementing the exhibition are discussions and insights into the public and private life of the sovereign. Piazza Unità serves as the stage for a variety of musical performances, ranging from rock to pop, jazz to blues, revival to classical music.

Le acque del tarvisiano hanno una curiosa caratteristica, in corrispondenza di Camporosso, trasversalmente alla valle, si colloca lo spartiacque tra Mare Adriatico e Mar Nero. Il fiume Fella ed i suoi affluenti sfociano nel mare Adriatico, le acque dello Slizza, invece, (attraverso Drava e Danubio) arrivano al Mar Nero. Ed è proprio il passaggio di questo torrente nella forra a Tarvisio Bassa attraverso anse simili ad un piccolo canyon che forma l’Orrido dello Slizza. La discesa al fiume è agevole: il percorso naturalistico ad anello ben segnalato, si snoda in mezzo al bosco tra scorci panoramici che meritano di essere fotografati. Scendendo gradino dopo gradino si percepisce il refrigerio del fiume, specialmente nelle calde giornate estive; una serie di scale, passerelle conducono alle pozze d’acqua smeraldine dove, i bambini –e non solo– possono mettere i piedi in acqua o godersi sole e relax facendo un pic nic sul greto del torrente, La risalita è altrettanto agevole, lungo passerelle e passaggi in galleria che costeggiano il torrente roboante conducendo al Monumento del Soldato Asburgico, imperiosa raffigurazione che commemora i soldati austriaci caduti per difendere il territorio da Napoleone.

The waters of the Tarvisio area have an interesting characteristic: at Camporosso, there is a watershed between the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea. The Fella River and its tributaries flow into the Adriatic, while the Slizza River (through the Drava and Danube) reaches the Black Sea. It is this river’s passage through the gorge in lower Tarvisio, resembling a small canyon, that forms the Slizza Gorge.

The descent to the river is easy: the well-marked loop trail winds through the forest with picturesque views worth photographing. Step by step, you feel the refreshing coolness of the river, especially on hot summer days; a series of stairs and walkways lead to emerald pools where children –and adults – can dip their feet in the water or enjoy a picnic on the riverbank. The ascent is equally easy, along walkways and tunnels that follow the roaring river, leading to the Monument to the Habsburg Soldier, an imposing sculpture commemorating the Austrian soldiers who fell defending the territory from Napoleon. Piccoli tesori custoditi in una frazione di Tarvisio, quella di Cave del Predil (Raibl) la cui storia è indissolubilmente legata alla Miniera, dai tempi di Roma antica. Sono i Musei di Tarvisio che comprendono il Parco geominerario, il Museo della tradizione mineraria e il Museo Storico Militare “Alpi Giulie”. La miniera, una delle più importanti d’Europa, è stata attiva fino al 1990 ed ha influenzato la storia del luogo. La miniera è visitabile facilmente da tutti; si entra nel cuore della montagna a bordo di uno sferragliante trenino per proseguire a piedi accompagnati dalla guida attraverso le gallerie lungo le quali si vede dove e come venivano estratti zinco e piombo. La miniera però, si trasforma e ospita, diventando scenario d’eccezione per suggestivi concerti e aperitivi con degustazione. È veramente piacevole sorseggiare un calice di vino fresco con il formaggio stagionato, secondo la tradizione, proprio in miniera.

Hidden treasures can be found in a fraction of Tarvisio, Cave del Predil (Raibl), whose history is inextricably linked to its mine, dating back to ancient Roman times. The Museums of Tarvisio include the Geomineral Park, the Mining Tradition Museum, and the Military Historical Museum “Alpi Giulie.” The mine, one of the most important in Europe, was active until 1990 and has profoundly influenced the area’s history. It’s easily accessible to visitors; you enter the heart of the mountain on a rattling train and continue on foot with a guide through tunnels where you can see how zinc and lead were extracted. The mine also serves as a unique venue for concerts and tasting events, making it truly enjoyable to sip a glass of cool wine with aged cheese, as per tradition, right inside the mine.

“Giriamo in media dieci spot all’anno sui laghi di Fusine che sembrano creati da uno sceneggiatore”, raccontano Michele Sardina, Alessandro Coleschi e Stephan Paterniti, tre location manager indipendenti che lavorano in Friuli Venezia Giulia e collaborano con la Film Commission della nostra regione.

“Si è girato tanto nel corso degli ultimi anni in diverse location del Tarvisiano –continuano–, ma i due laghi sono un set privilegiato, quasi naturale e poco antropizzato, con sfondi magnifici in tutte le stagioni. A volte capita di aggiungere alcuni elementi di supporto, come la neve

o aghi di pino, ma stando sempre attenti a non alterare il paesaggio e ripristinando il tutto una volta terminate le riprese”. Tra i film girati a Fusine, con produzioni come Paramount, RAI Ficton e Netflix, –anche solo in parte– ci sono “La porta rossa”, diretta da Carmine Elia, “Piccolo corpo” di Laura Samani, “Robbing Mussolini” di Renato De Maria, “Halo 2” di Otto Bathurst e “The Witcher” diretto da Marc Jobst.

“Nel Tarvisiano siamo stati accolti con favore, abbiamo creato un network di relazioni importanti con il Comune di Tarvisio, la Cooperativa Pluriservizi e i gestori di alcuni locali come I Sette Nani e il rifugio Zacchi, quasi sempre coinvolti in qualche modo” aggiungono. The beauty of the lakes of Tarvisiano increasingly attracts film productions that thus also promote the territory of Alto Friuli beyond the borders. “We shoot an average of ten commercials a year at the Fusine lakes, which seem to be created by a screenwriter,” say Michele Sardina, Alessandro Coleschi, and Stephan Paterniti, three independent location managers who work in Friuli Venezia Giulia and collaborate with the Film Commission of our region. “A lot has been filmed over the last few years in various locations in Tarvisiano,” they continue, “but the two lakes are a privileged set, almost natural and little anthropized, with magnificent backgrounds in all seasons. Sometimes we add some supporting elements, such as snow or pine needles, but always being careful not to alter the landscape and restoring everything once the shooting is finished.” Among the films shot in Fusine, with productions like Paramount, RAI Fiction, and Netflix, even if only in part, are “La porta rossa,” directed by Carmine Elia, “Piccolo corpo” by Laura Samani, “Robbing Mussolini” by Renato De Maria, “Halo 2” by Otto Bathurst, and “The Witcher” directed by Marc Jobst. “In Tarvisiano, we have been welcomed warmly, we have created a network of important relationships with the Municipality of Tarvisio, the Pluriservizi Cooperative, and the managers of some places like I Sette Nani and the Zacchi refuge, almost always involved in some way,” they add. Se si vuole intraprendere un itinerario montano spiccatamente identitario, che valorizza i legami profondi degli abitanti della Valle di Ugovizza con il territorio, non ci si può perdere il Puanina Tour. Il nome “Puanina”, in lingua locale “alpeggio”, indica un percorso lungo 16,5 km, della durata di circa 7 ore che può essere imboccato partendo direttamente dal paese di Ugovizza attraverso due vie, con un dislivello complessivo di circa 1000 metri. Il tour è un trekking semplice e piacevole in cui ognuno può scegliere il proprio itinerario senza necessariamente percorrere l’intero anello. Il Puanina Tour porta il visitatore a percorrere un viaggio nel gusto, collegando sette strutture ricettive: quattro agriturismi, una locanda e due rifugi, con possibilità di pernottamento.

If you want to undertake a mountain itinerary that is deeply rooted in identity, highlighting the profound connections of the inhabitants of the Ugovizza Valley with their territory, you cannot miss the Puanina Tour. The name “Puanina,” meaning “pasture” in the local language, refers to a 16.5 km route, taking about 7 hours to complete. It can be started directly from the village of Ugovizza via two paths, with a total elevation gain of about 1000 meters. The tour is a simple and pleasant trek where everyone can choose their itinerary without necessarily completing the entire loop.

Dal 23 al 25 agosto Tarvisio ospita la seconda edizione di CamporossoRacconta, una rassegna letteraria che avrà quest’anno come tema il viaggio. Un viaggio, ma tanti itinerari da percorrere nel corso delle conversazioni nel bucolico giardino del Consorzio Agrario Vicinia di Camporosso. Un programma caleidoscopico che porterà il pubblico alle mete più disparate con guide esperte e coinvolgenti, scoprendo mondi poco noti. Il giornalista Paolo Aleotti, ex corrispondente RAI da New York, aprirà le porte di un carcere, i giornalisti Fausto Biloslavo e Maria Cuffaro racconteranno come si vive nelle zone nei paesi in guerra. Anche il mare, con le sue storie, sarà protagonista, sarà presentato infatti l’ultimo “capitolo” della collana “Storie di Mare”, a cura della Guardia Costiera in collaborazione

con edizioni “all Around”. Il viaggio però è anche immaginazione, suggestione. Camporosso diventerà allora punto di partenza per… l’Oriente, seguendo con i disegni di Marco Tabilio le orme di Marco Polo, uno dei più famosi e fantasiosi viaggiatori di tutti i tempi. E di viaggi fantastici si parlerà negli spazi dedicati a bambini e ragazzi: momenti saranno loro i protagonisti, liberando la fantasia e soddisfacendo curiosità. I diversi panel saranno l’occasione anche per intraprendere un viaggio nel mondo fantastico degli animali con Giulia Corsini, veterinaria della notte presso un grande ospedale vicino a Cambridge e Stefania Del Rizzo o dentro se stessi, come quello tracciato dalla penna di Corrado Premuda, lasciandosi suggestionare dai racconti dei relatori. Ma si sa che viaggiando si scoprono anche

le caratteristiche culinarie e musicali di un territorio. Ed ecco che tornati alla partenza il viaggio terminerà con una festa: degustazioni di prodotti caratteristici del territorio e musica concluderanno le serate.

From August 23 to 25, Tarvisio hosts the second edition of CamporossoRacconta, a literary festival that will have travel as its theme this year. One journey, but many itineraries to explore during the conversations in the bucolic garden of the Consorzio Agrario Vicinia in Camporosso. A kaleidoscopic program will take the public to the most diverse destinations with expert and engaging guides, discovering littleknown worlds. Journalist Paolo Aleotti, former RAI correspondent in New York, will open the doors of a prison; journalists Fausto Biloslavo and Maria Cuffaro will recount what it’s like to live in war-torn countries. The sea, with its stories, will also be a protagonist; in fact, the latest “chapter” of the “Storie di Mare” (Stories of the Sea) series, edited by General Command of the

Coast Guard in collaboration with All Around, will be presented.

Travel is also about imagination and suggestion. Camporosso will then become a starting point for the Orient, following Marco Tabilio’s drawings in the footsteps of Marco Polo, one of the most famous and imaginative travellers of all time. And there will be discussions about fantastic journeys in the spaces dedicated to children and teenagers: there will be moments when they are the protagonists, freeing their imagination and satisfying their curiosity.

The various panels will also be an opportunity to embark on a journey within oneself, like the one traced by Corrado Premuda’s pen: you’ll feel spellbound by the speakers’ stories. Giulia Corsini, nighttime vet in a large hospital near Cambridge, and Stefania Del Rizzo will lead us through the fantastic world of animals.

But we know that traveling also reveals the culinary and musical characteristics of a territory. And so, back to the starting point, the journey will end with a party: tastings of characteristic local products and music will conclude the evenings.
