QUESTO PICCOLO GRANDE AMORE “Questo piccolo grande amore” (lit. This little big love)

by Italian pop singer and songwriter Claudio Baglioni 1970s hit, that was awarded the title of Italian song of the century – and teenagers today still know every word of it. Fifty years later IES magazine could play it as the soundtrack of this issue, focusing on the “little” and “big” facets of Trieste. A city that is neither little, nor big – although she came close to being quite great once, almost as great as a capital city, back in the 19th century, when Trieste’s port was the only sea access of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The dream was shortlived, and the city ended up accepting her true size and place. However, she never forgot the little things that still make her proud today – and rightly so.

The imposing buildings of the city centre, standing tall and proud like their counterparts in Vienna, Budapest, and Prague, may appear constrained, even stifled – gasping for air through the narrow streets of a city that can be visited on foot in a couple of hours. Only upon reaching the seafront does one have the impression that their façades can finally stretch, taking deep and regular breaths that follow the rhythm of the waves... they are truly a sight worth seeing (not long ago they would have appeared on what we used to call postcards), one that visitors cannot easily forget.

IES invites you to visit Italy’s “smallest” province and admire the numerous facets of her greatness: Italy’s most important port; the headquarters of historic insurance companies, long-time leaders of the financial world; and all the reasons why Trieste is considered a capital city, starting from coffee production and brewing. Trieste’s greatness may also be expressed in numbers: her annual regatta recently became a Guinness World Record holder as the sailing race with the highest number of participants in the world; while the Karst Plateau is famous for its Grotta Gigante (lit. Giant Cave). Il Piccolo (lit. the little one) is the name of Trieste’s newspaper – a name meant to distinguish it from other, larger newspapers at the time of its establishment in 1881. Little are also the city’s countless artisanal workshops and bookshops, bravely standing their ground despite the overwhelming power of the digital market. Finally, IES would like to offer its readers a small culinary treat, as we are convinced that true delights for the palate are not measured in terms of size, and that a “little big” mouthful is enough to appreciate fine quality…

È stata una hit degli anni ’70, ma la canzone che lanciò l’interminabile carriera di Claudio Baglioni la cantano ancor oggi teenager nati molti, ma molti anni dopo. E cinquant’anni più tardi IES potrebbe allora sceglierla come colonna sonora di questo numero, che si gioca sul “piccolo” e “grande” di Trieste. Una città che alla fin fine non è però né piccola né grande, anche se ha accarezzato l’idea di essere una quasi capitale nel diciannovesimo secolo, quando era l’unico importante sbocco al mare del regno Austro-Ungarico. Ma si è poi adattata alle sue reali dimensioni, esaltando però le tante piccole cose di cui è oggi giustamente orgogliosa.

Ecco allora che i grandi ed austeri palazzi del centro storico, così simili a quelli che puoi ammirare in importanti capitali come Vienna, Budapest o Praga paiono stretti, quasi soffocati nel cuore di una città che visiti comodamente a piedi con una passeggiata di un paio d’ore. Edifici che trovano uno spazio d’ampio respiro solo quando si affacciano sul mare che li lambisce, lungo un fronte d’acqua che è la vera fotografia (una volta le chiamavamo… cartoline) che il visitatore si porterà poi con sé.

IES vi invita allora a scoprire nella più “piccola” provincia italiana, le tante grandezze che la città di Trieste gelosamente fa sue: dal porto più importante d’Italia, alle storiche sedi delle Assicurazioni, leader planetarie nel mondo economico-finanziario, per non scordare che capitale questa città lo è davvero, quando si parla di caffè e della sua produzione. Una città da “guinness dei primati” anche nella vela con la regata più affollata al mondo, senza scordare quanto nasconde il sottosuolo carsico con una grotta che non si limita ad essere “grande”, ma si deve chiamare per forza ”gigante”.

Il Piccolo a Trieste è anche il nome del quotidiano della città, chiamato così nell’anno della sua fondazione (1881) per le dimensioni ridotte rispetto agli altri giornali. E piccole sono anche le tante botteghe artigiane sorte negli ultimi anni, piuttosto che certe particolari librerie, coraggiose nel vedere la luce quasi a voler ribellarsi allo strapotere del digitale rispetto alla carta stampata. E per finire, IES vuole regalarvi in queste pagine qualcosa di piccolo anche nello spazio dedicato ai piaceri della tavola, dove certe eccellenze non debbono per forza giocare sulla quantità, ma possono donare piacevoli sensazioni con un unico e semplice piccolo grande boccone…

Il Fondo di Gio ONLUS è un’associazione organizzata per promuovere la ricerca sui tumori cerebrali, con particolare riguardo a quelli infantili.

L’obiettivo è quello di vincere la guerra contro questo maledetto male per il bene di tutti coloro che, grandi e piccini, ogni giorno affrontano battaglie durissime.

Gio è Giovanni Scropetta, il bimbo di 8 anni che è volato via a causa di un tumore cerebrale contro il quale ha combattuto con grande coraggio e fierezza per un quarto della sua vita.

Il logo dell’Associazione, un arcobaleno, è nato proprio dalla fantasia di Gio. Questo disegno esprime serenità e racchiude nella sua colorata e luminosa semplicità tutta la forza della speranza nella vittoria contro i tumori cerebrali. IES vi invita a sostenere questa realtà, con un’elargizione al Fondo di Gio ONLUS, a favore del lavoro dei ricercatori o anche con la semplice condivisione della foto di un arcobaleno su Instagram @ilfondodigio #arcobaleniperlaricerca Un piccolo, grande messaggio di speranza.

el 1856 il New York Daily Tribune inviava a Trieste un proprio valente collaboratore della redazione economica per comprendere le ragioni di uno sviluppo tanto veloce quanto consistente del commercio marittimo dell’allora Impero austro-ungarico.

Questo corrispondente era Karl Marx, il quale visitando lo scalo adriatico, offriva una lettura molto interessante della fortuna mercantile della città: secondo il giornalista-filosofo Trieste, al pari di New York e degli Stati Uniti d’America, non aveva un passato e il suo sviluppo era determinato dal fatto di non dover sottostare ai vincoli delle tradizioni. Trieste insomma nell’Ottocento è completamente proiettata al futuro.

Il porto, che oggi è il più importante d’Italia e uno tra i primi d’Europa, era ed è tuttora il motore della città ed è intorno ad esso che nascono alcune delle società che hanno fatto la storia economica. A Trieste viene fondato nel 1836 il Lloyd Austriaco, la più importante società armatoriale della città, poi chiamata Lloyd Triestino, che nel 1880 decide di costruire la sua sede principale nell’allora Piazza Grande, oggi Piazza Unità d’Italia.

Ruota sempre intorno ai commerci la costituzione di alcune delle più grandi compagnie assicurative – Generali nel 1831, RAS nel 1838 e Lloyd Adriatico nel 1936 (queste ultime due acquisite da Allianz nel 2007) – che hanno costituito l’ossatura economica di questo piccolo angolo di Adriatico con una forte vocazione da capitale. A testimoniarlo, ancora una volta, le sedi di

Generali sulle Rive e di RAS in Piazza della Repubblica.

Oggi dove può essere osservata ancora questa grandeur? Certamente l’architettura pubblica e privata del centro ha un ruolo fondamentale nel raccontare un passato non troppo lontano nel quale Trieste dialogava sullo stesso piano di Vienna, Praga e Budapest.

Chi passeggia nell’ampia zona pedonale rimane di solito impressionato dalle dimensioni dei palazzi che si affacciano sul Canale di Ponterosso, spesso detto Canal grande, che oggi sembrano quasi esagerati rispetto a una città che conta duecentomila abitanti. E di certo anche la più grande piazza d’Europa affacciata sul mare –Piazza Unità d’Italia– dà un respiro notevole a un centro che si potrebbe considerare di provincia.

Trieste tuttavia non ha una grandezza esclusivamente “dimensionale”.

Coloro che raggiungono la città in auto spesso sorridono davanti ai cartelli posizionati all’ingresso urbano: capitale del caffè, capitale della scienza, capitale della Barcolana. Tutto vero.

Trieste ospita la Borsa del Caffè, istituita a inizi Novecento. Qui transita quasi il 30% del caffè crudo che raggiunge l’Italia, andando a creare il distretto industriale “Trieste Coffee Cluster” costituito da operatori specializzati come broker, crudisti, spedizionieri, torrefattori, decafeinizzatori. Se Illy è un brand riconosciuto a livello globale, pochi sanno che viene prodotto esclusivamente nella zona industriale di Trieste e solo poi viene distribuito su scala planetaria.

nel Guinness World of Record, spetta all’edizione del 2018 con 2689 barche tutte sulla medesima linea di partenza, posizionata tra il Faro della Vittoria e il Castello di Miramare.

Ma se finora abbiamo citato le grandezze della città per raggiungere l’enormità si deve nuovamente salire sull’altopiano carsico dove si trova la Grotta Gigante. La visita a questa caverna è emozionante per le proporzioni monumentali che la natura è riuscita a creare nel sottosuolo, un vero scrigno di inestimabili tesori non solo speleologici, ma anche fossili. Dal sito paleontologico del Villaggio del Pescatore arrivano Antonio e Bruno, unici dinosauri rinvenuti in Italia ed esposti al Museo di Storia Naturale.

1959 quando presso il porto di Trieste fu costituito il deposito dell’Istituto Brasilero do Cafè, creato dal governo brasiliano come garanzia di pagamento su un finanziamento concesso per la fornitura al Brasile di una grossa quantità di mezzi Alfa Romeo, azienda allora di proprietà statale. Il deposito era costituito da un milione di sacchi di caffè brasiliano immagazzinati presso il porto nuovo di Trieste e venduti ad un prezzo politico.

Sul fronte della scienza Trieste vanta la presenza di istituti di ricerca d’eccellenza e secondo i dati Istat più aggiornati è la città con il più alto rapporto tra abitanti e ricercatori scientifici. Sull’altipiano carsico ha sede Elettra, la più potente macchina di luce in Italia, ovvero un sincrotrone a disposizione della comunità scientifica internazionale per analisi fisiche, chimiche, ingegneristiche e biomedicali.

Alle spalle di Miramare è invece ubicato il Centro Internazionale di Fisica Teorica, fondato nel 1964 e intitolato ad Abdus Salam primo premio Nobel mussulmano per la fisica nel 1979, che lo diresse dalla nascita al 1993 con l’obiettivo di far convergere in una città allora posizionata sul limite della cortina di ferro scienziati da tutto il mondo per alimentare il dialogo e la cooperazione.

Se la scienza è materia da addetti ai lavori la Barcolana, ossia la più affollata regata velica al mondo, è ormai l’immagine di Trieste. Una grandissima festa che dal 1969 si tiene ogni seconda domenica di ottobre e fa diventare campioni anche i neofiti del bordeggio. Il record di partecipazione, iscritto

I

n 1856 the New York Daily Tribune sent one of its most valid correspondents for economic and financial affairs to Trieste, with the task of reporting on the city’s sudden, yet solid maritime trade development within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. That correspondent’s name was Karl Marx.

He provided an interesting viewpoint on the Adriatic free port and its fortune: according to Marx, Trieste, not unlike New York, or the rest of the United States, for that matter, was unencumbered by a past of her own, and her rapid development was made possible by the absence of the shackles of tradition.

In other words, 19th-century Trieste had her gazed fixed to the future.

Today Trieste’s port is the most important one in Italy and ranks among the first in Europe. It has always been, and still is, the beating heart of the city, as witnessed by the economy giants that built their head offices around it. Österreichischer Lloyd (or “Austrian Lloyd”), one of the world’s biggest shipping companies, was founded in Trieste in 1836. After changing its name to Lloyd Triestino in 1880, the company built its head office at a corner of Piazza Unità d’Italia, known at

the time as Piazza Grande. Trieste’s booming maritime trade was also the spark that ignited the insurance sector, with some of the most important Italian insurance companies of the time establishing their headquarters in this city – e.g., Generali in 1831, and RAS and Lloyd Adriatico (both acquired by Allianz in 2007) in 1838 and in 1936, respectively. Their presence served as the framework, on which Trieste, with her capital-city vocation, developed her economic success. Their buildings are still here: Generali’s overlooking the Rive; and RAS’ on Piazza della Repubblica.

What is left of that grandeur today?

The city centre and its historical buildings, both public and private, preserve in their architectural style the traces of a not-so-distant past, when Trieste’s status was equal to that of Vienna, Prague, and Budapest.

A stroll through the pedestrian area of Ponterosso is enough to imagine what the city must have looked like a century ago, with the awe-inspiring façades of the buildings that still overlook what was then known as Canal Grande – their imposing outline and size almost out of place today, in a city with a population of 200,000. Piazza Unità d’Italia itself, Europe’s largest city square on the sea, may seem ill-fitting the waterfront of a city that could now be considered no more than a large town.

Trieste’s greatness, however, cannot be measured in size alone. Driving into town, you may notice a few (perhaps odd sounding) signs: capital city of coffee, capital city of science, capital city of Barcolana. All true.

Physics (ICTP) is an international research institute founded in 1964 and named after 1979 Pakistani Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam. Salam was the first Pakistani and the first Muslim from an Islamic country to receive a Nobel Prize in science. He served as director of ICTP from its start until 1993. In establishing ICTP in Trieste, then almost adjacent to the iron curtain, he intended to foster dialogue and cooperation among scientists from all over the world.

Science may be an “insiders only” field, but Barcolana is not: the regatta with the highest number of participants in the world is now a symbol of Trieste. This huge celebration has been taking place on the second Sunday of October since 1969 – here even absolute beginners can feel like champions.

Barcolana 2018 became a Guinness World Records holder as the largest sailing race in history, with 2,689 watercrafts on the starting line, between the lighthouse Faro della Vittoria and the Castle of Miramare.

So far Trieste’s greatness has been described in terms of relevance, but size does matter, as witnessed by the Grotta Gigante (lit. Giant Cave) on the Karst Plateau. Visitors cannot help but stand in awe of this monumental underground wonder of nature, which is also a treasure chest of speleological and fossilised finds. The paleontological site of nearby Villaggio del Pescatore is where Antonio and Bruno were found: the only two dinosaurs whose remains were excavated on Italian soil are now displayed in the city’s Museum of Natural History.

The first Borsa del Caffè (i.e., Coffee Exchange) was established in Trieste in the early 20th century. Today, more than 30% of Italy’s green coffee imports pass through the “Trieste Coffee Cluster” industrial district, a fundamental hub for coffee brokers, importers, carriers, as well as roasting and decaffeination businesses. Illy is a globally renowned brand, yet only few know that Illy coffee production is limited exclusively to the company’s industrial site located in Trieste, which then distributes Illy products all over the world. Interesting fact: in 1959 the Brazilian government established the Istituto Brasilero do Café depot in the port of Trieste, as a collateral for the funds received by Brazil for the supply of vehicles by Alfa Romeo, then a state-owned company. The depot was set up in the form of one million bags of Brazilian coffee, which were stored in Trieste’s Porto Nuovo and sold at a fixed price.

As regards science, Trieste is home to a significant number of international research institutes of repute. According to the latest official statistics released

by Istat (i.e., Italian National Institute of Statistics), Trieste is the city with the highest rate of scientific researchers per capita. Italy’s most powerful “light machine” is located on the Karst Plateau: Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, specialising in the generation of high-quality synchrotron and free-electron laser light, is a research centre open to the international scientific community for material and life science analyses.

e piccole storie che si incontrano nella nostra città si nascondono dietro la grandezza del suo passato. È lì, in quella dimensione dimenticata e visibile solo agli occhi attenti di chi viaggia, che si manifesta la curiosità innescata dagli aneddoti. Vale a livello geografico e storico, ma anche quando si ripensa al legame che Trieste possiede con il mondo che la circonda.

Nella narrazione di questi luoghi uno spazio centrale è quello occupato da Il Piccolo, quotidiano in lingua italiana fondato da Teodoro Mayer nel lontano 1881 e chiamato così in ragione del formato in cui veniva stampato all’inizio.

Una delle storie di giornalismo più longeve in Italia, al pari delle grandi testate nazionali, che, proprio in ragione della posizione geografica della città, ha offerto e continua ad offrire, uno sguardo privilegiato sul confine orientale d’Italia.

Ma questo aggettivo così affascinante viene incollato ad uno dei teatri simbolo di Milano, ovvero il Piccolo.

Siamo in Lombardia, eppure quel tempio teatrale viene pensato e fondato da Giorgio Strehler, regista triestino che dà il la al progetto nel secondo dopoguerra. Le piccole storie che spingono la città oltre i suoi confini naturali vengono prodotte dalla sua stessa capacità di recitare un ruolo di rilievo nella società tra l’Ottocento e il secolo breve. Così, il viaggiatore che conosce la città di Anversa e la bocca del suo porto, saprà riconoscere la stessa statua di Minerva –realizzata dallo scultore triestino Marcello Mascherini–, in cima alla scalinata dell’università giuliana; lo stesso vale per l’apertura di uffici

delle assicurazioni Generali al Cairo, oppure di una grande scritta “Trieste” che campeggia sulla facciata della stazione centrale di Milano. Sono piccoli esempi che raccontano piccole storie triestine, capaci di emergere con decisione e di viaggiare lungo i bordi della storia.

Ma Trieste, sulle dimensioni ridotte, vanta anche altri record. La provincia triestina è la provincia più piccola d’Italia. Le ragioni che spiegano questo guinness sono ascrivibili alle vicende successive al secondo conflitto mondiale. La provincia di Trieste, infatti, inglobava al suo interno anche tutta la penisola istriana, territorio che negli anni post 1945 di fatto passò sotto il controllo jugoslavo, privando così la città del suo retroterra naturale.

Nell’approccio che gli escursionisti triestini hanno maturato nel corso della storia c’è quello di prendere in prestito i nomi delle bellezze naturali italiane e inserirli nei contesti locali: è il caso dei piccoli Cervino e Montasio, due formazioni calcaree dalle dimensioni ridotte rispetto alle sorelle maggiori e che si stagliano in val Rosandra.

Questa valle, scavata dall’omonimo torrente, è la palestra di roccia dove fingere di essere su cime alpine, certamente piccole, eppure capaci di regalare allenamenti di tutto rispetto.

Piccoli e quasi introvabili sono anche i fori che in Carso, in prossimità del corso sotterraneo del fiume Timavo e in occasione delle sue piene autunnali, si aprono nella Terra e fanno riemergere l’urlo ventoso dalle sue viscere.

Riprendendo a camminare in centro città, se da un lato esiste canal Grande,

dall’altro lato si può percorrere una via chiamata canal Piccolo. È un relitto di una lingua di mare che, a fianco del caffè Tommaseo, si incuneava in direzione di piazza della Borsa. Di quel canale, una volta interrato, oggi rimane solamente il nome. Piccoli però sono anche i pezzettini di carta che Ettore Fenderl, un ragazzino che abitava proprio in piazza della Borsa, nel 1876 decise di lanciare dalla sua finestra.

Leggenda vuole che quei rettangolini strappati abbiano dato vita all’invenzione dei coriandoli, gioco senza tempo, di grandi e piccini.

Una storia a sé è quella delle dimensioni ridotte dei campi da calcio.

A Trieste, nella sua quasi ossessiva ed infinita propensione al particolarismo, non esiste il calciotto (calcio otto contro otto), bensì sette contro sette. I campi sono disseminati praticamente dappertutto, ogni rione e quartiere ne possiede uno, e i tornei che vengono organizzati non si contano. Il lato sportivo della città, in attesa che le principali società di basket e calcio approdino a palcoscenici più importanti, si misura anche e soprattutto nelle cose piccole, portate avanti dai triestini ogni giorno.

Tutto ciò fa di Trieste una sorta di vortice, dove cerchi concentrici producono sottoinsiemi complessi. Le storie che dentro ad esso trovano ragion d’essere sono spesso piccole –e per questo difficilmente individuabili–, ma non per questo meno significative della sua grandeur. In un mondo che corre veloce, saper rallentare e mettersi alla ricerca delle storie dimenticate, può fare ancora la differenza.

he little anecdotes dotting Trieste today are concealed by the greatness of the city’s past.

There, in that distant and forgotten dimension, visible only to the keen eyes of true travellers, anecdotes reveal their hidden stories. They concern the city’s geographic and historic profile, but also Trieste’s connection to her surroundings. Witness Il Piccolo (lit. The little one), the city’s Italianlanguage newspaper, founded in 1881 by Teodoro Mayer, and so named because of its original print format. Il Piccolo is still Trieste’s daily today, its endurance matching that of Italy’s most important national newspaper; thanks to the city’s geographical position, it has always been and continuous to be a prime observation point on Italy’s eastern border.

The same intriguing adjective is attached to one of Milan’s symbols: il Piccolo theatre. True, Milan is in a completely different region, but it was a Trieste-born director, Giorgio Strehler, who initiated the project that led to the creation of this temple of performing arts in the aftermath of World War II. The little anecdotes stretching Trieste’s boundaries beyond her geographical limits result from the city’s relevance between the late 19th and early 20th century. For instance, if you are familiar with Antwerp and the access to the city’s port, you may recognise a familiar silhouette at the top of the staircase leading to the main campus of the University of Trieste: it is the statue of Minerva by Triestine sculptor Marcello Mascherini. Generali headquarters in Cairo were located in a building that is still a landmark of the Egyptian capital. And it is no coincidence that the writing “Trieste” on the lower part of the façade of Milan Central Station was introduced in the original project. These are just few examples of little Triestine anecdotes that withstood the passage of time, moving along the margins of history.

Being “little” in so many ways has become a matter of pride for Trieste – and it earned her a record title or two.

For instance, Trieste is the smallest Italian province in terms of size, which is mainly due to the events that followed the end of World War II: before the conflict, the province’s territory included the entire Istrian peninsula, which became part of Yugoslavia after 1945, thus depriving Trieste of her natural inland.

Triestine hikers and climbers are known for their curious habit of naming local spots after famous natural beauties from the rest of Italy: witness little Cervino and little Montasio (i.e., little Matterhorn and little Jôf di Montasio, N/T), two limestone formations in Val Rosandra and ideal “sisters” of the two famous peaks of the same name, albeit in a (much) smaller scale. Val Rosandra itself, carved into the rocks by the stream of the same name, is a natural rock-climbing gym, where trainees can pretend to be conquering the top of the Alps. So small that they are almost invisible: the tiny holes in the Karst Plateau following the course of the underground river Timav wait for the autumn floods to open like monstruous mouths, releasing the

windy cry of the Earth’s viscera.

Back to the city centre, the famous Canal Grande (lit. Grand Canal) runs parallel to a tiny alley called Canal Piccolo (lit. Little Canal): it is the only reminder of a sea strip that used to reach into the city towards Piazza della Borsa, alongside Tommaseo café, and today is completely filled in. Smaller still are the tiny pieces of paper that Ettore Fenderl, a boy living above Piazza Borsa, decided to toss from his window one day in 1876. Legend has it that those very squares of ripped paper led to the invention of confetti, a beloved game at any age.

Football fields belong to a category of their own. Trieste has always been fond of her particularistic, even bizarre identity, which is why there never was any eight-a-side football here, as Triestini prefer their own 7x7 version. Seven-a-side football fields are everywhere, almost every city district and neighbourhood has its own – each with its series of tournaments. As she waits for her basket and football clubs to land the highest tiers in their respective leagues, Trieste measures her competitive spirit on a small scale, in the deeds of regular Triestini.

As a result, Trieste may be compared to a gyre, spiralling its coils into multiple complex sub-systems. The stories enveloped in those coils are often mere little anecdotes, and therefore difficult to make out, but they all point clearly to the city’s grandeur. In today’s fast-paced world, being able to slow down and look for seemingly forgotten stories can still make a difference.

L

a piccola Vienna sul mare, la capitale, la città di provincia, la città delle navi bianche, la città del caffè, la città del vento, la città multiculturale, la città di carta, la città per tutti, una città che è tante città.

Un bel posto dove vivere…

Nel verbo vivere si esprimono i concetti che rendono la nostra vita interessante, alla scoperta delle particolarità, delle eccellenze, delle emozioni, delle cose che ci fanno stare bene.

Quando ho scoperto Trieste, circa 40 anni fa, sono rimasto incantato dagli estremi che la contraddistinguevano (che tutto sommato sopravvivono ancora).

Se penso all’aspetto commerciale, posso spaziare dal ricordo della piccola, semplice latteria d’altri tempi della signora Maria, proprio in Cavana, fino al negozio di attrezzature sportive all’avanguardia che all’epoca era un punto di riferimento in Italia per determinare i prezzi delle attrezzature da sci.

Nella piccola, grande città c’era e

c’è posto per le esigenze di ogni tipo di clientela.

Con tante e variegate possibilità per chi fa impresa. Questo è successo e succede anche nel nostro settore. Trieste è tante città diverse anche architettonicamente. Basti pensare al suo successo come città del cinema, con le sue infinite location.

Dall’eleganza del centro città alla splendida natura del Carso, per chi si occupa di arredo e design come noi, progettare a Trieste è un invito a nozze. È un luogo dell’ispirazione, un invito alla creatività, da declinare per le più diverse sensibilità di gusto e di stile.

Come tutti i porti di mare, Trieste ha la sua parte interna storica, antica, la città vecchia, caratterizzata da piccole abitazioni con piante complicate, contorte, composte da ambienti che talvolta venivano accoppiati o aggiunti successivamente. Luoghi dove si respira ancora la vitalità di un tempo. Il centro è caratterizzato da palazzi anche maestosi con caratteristiche architettoniche importanti.

A ognuna di queste parti distintive della città viene incontro un’architettura fatta di tecnologia e modernità, con la possibilità di sperimentare e creare soluzioni in linea con i nostri tempi. In tutte le sue sfaccettature Trieste ha dato e dà carta bianca ai progetti di architettura di qualità. Le risposte devono essere all’altezza dell’identità della città, quella che guarda al passato, quella che guarda al futuro.

Gli estremi di cui sopra esistono ancora. Il cliente chiede, il professionista del progetto risponde. Contano il buon gusto, la specializzazione, la tensione all’innovazione, l’aggiornamento continuo. Tutto questo valore nel nostro mestiere ci ha sempre dato delle belle soddisfazioni. Anche nella nostra piccola città con le sue grandi opportunità.

Each of these distinctive parts of the city is met with an architecture of technology and modernity, with the possibility of experimenting and creating solutions in line with our times. In all its facets, Trieste has given and continues to give carte blanche to quality architectural projects. The answers must live up to the city’s identity, the one that looks to the past, the one that looks to the future.

The above extremes still exist. The client asks, the design professional responds. Good taste, specialisation, the drive for innovation, continuous updating count. All these values in our profession have always given us great satisfaction. Even in our small town with its great opportunities.

ittle Vienna by the sea, the capital, the provincial city, the city of white ships, the city of coffee, the city of wind, the multicultural city, the city of paper, the city for all, a city that is many cities. A beautiful place to live... In the verb ‘to live’ we express the concepts that make our lives interesting, discovering the special features, the excellence, the emotions, the things that make us feel good.

When I discovered Trieste some 40 years ago, I was enchanted by its extremes (which, all things considered, still survive).

If I think of the commercial aspect, I can range from the memory of Signora Maria’s small, simple, old-fashioned dairy shop, right on Cavana, to the state-of-the-art sports equipment shop that at the time was a point of reference in Italy for pricing ski equipment.

In the small, big city there was and is room for the needs of all kinds of customers. With many and varied possibilities for those who do business. This has happened in our sector too. Trieste is many different cities, also architecturally. Just think of its success as a city of cinema, with its endless locations.

From the elegance of the city centre to the splendid nature of the Karst, for those who deal in furniture and design as we do, designing in Trieste is a source of pleasure. It is a place of inspiration, an invitation to creativity, to be declined for the most diverse sensibilities of taste and style.

Like all seaports, Trieste has its historic, ancient inner city, the old town, characterised by small dwellings with complicated, convoluted layouts, made up of rooms that were sometimes coupled or added on later. Places where you can still breathe the vitality of the past. The centre is characterised by

In Cavana, in via Felice Venezian 16/E si cela un luogo non convenzionale: l’Angolo del cuoio, un laboratorio artigianale di pelletteria dove le creazioni di Anna e Valerio prendono vita sotto gli occhi curiosi dei visitatori. Lo spazio è infatti dominato da un ampio tavolo, spesso in disordine creativo, dove strumenti di ogni sorta regalano un’esperienza di shopping che va oltre il semplice acquisto. All’Angolo del cuoio potrete vedere come si crea un portafoglio o una borsa, dal primo taglio all’ultima cucitura, imparando a riconoscere il valore del lavoro manuale e l’importanza di ogni singolo gesto che contribuisce alla nascita di un prodotto unico.

Infine, via Punta del Forno 5 ospita un angolo di storia e creatività dove l’antico e il moderno si fondono: il laboratorio orafo di Renato Chicco, punto di riferimento dell’arte orafa che vanta quasi cinquant’anni di tradizione. Qui, i gioielli non sono semplici ornamenti, ma vere e proprie sculture indossabili, realizzate principalmente in oro e argento.

Le sue creazioni attingono dall’immaginario dei gioielli greci, etruschi ed egizi, e si estendono fino all’arte della gioielleria contemporanea. “Se non fossi stato un orafo, sarei stato un archeologo”, confessa Chicco. Uno dei suoi gioielli più rappresentativi sono le “Stelle”, presentate alla Barcolana del ‘95. Questa serie di orecchini, disponibili in cinque formati e placcati in oro giallo, bianco e rosso, è ormai un simbolo che rappresenta l’orafo da oltre trent’anni. [LS]

Their “Cabinet des curiosités” at no. 10 Via Luigi Cadorna is a treasure chest of unique pieces, either vintage or new, that tell tales of faraway lands and times past.

“Wear your personality”: this is the slogan of ModoLabo, atelier of modern-style handmade costume jewellery at no.8 Via San Michele (visits by appointment only). ModoLabo brand is the brainchild of Antonella’s creative mind and Massimiliano’s skilled hands, able to turn his partner’s ideas into reality. “We make necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, and brooches. We like to experiment with various materials and their properties: anodized aluminium wire and its pliancy; wood or resin and their unique texture; cotton and its softness” Massimiliano explains. Their iconic flagship is the Nuvola necklace: a pendant of black-dyed, nickel-free aluminium wire, hanging from a cord of black waxed cotton. ModoLabo costume jewellery will be on display until 31st December in the temporary store at no. 5 of Via delle Beccherie.

In the city neighbourhood known as Cavana, at no. 16/E Via Felice Venezian, an unconventional workshop catches the eye of curious passersby: Anna and Valerio’s Angolo del cuoio is a leather workshop, whose centre piece is a large wooden table overrun by the tools of their trade − a classic display of creative chaos. Here, Anna and Valerio, tools in hand, provide their customers with a unique shopping experience: you will be able to witness the entire manufacturing

process of a handmade bag or purse, from the first cut to the last stitch. It is their way of celebrating the value of human labour, as well as the importance of each single step in the creation of a unique piece.

Our tour ends at no.5 of Via Punta del Forno, in front of Renato Chicco’s goldsmithing workshop: with a tradition dating back almost fifty years, Chicco’s workshop is a veritable reference point in the world of gold working, as well as a historic bulwark of creativity, where past and present meet. Chicco’s jewels are not mere accessories: rather, they could be described as wearable sculptures, made of gold and silver. Their sophisticated design draws inspiration from Ancient Greek, Egyptian, and Etruscan jewellery tradition, as well as modern trends. “Were I not a goldsmith, I would probably be an archaeologist” Renato admits. One of his most representative creations, his Stelle earrings, were presented at the Barcolana regatta in 1995.

n gioiello di dimensioni contenute, un testimone particolare di importanti eventi storici, sarà esposto al Castello di Miramare dal 2024. È lo scettro dell’Imperatrice Carlotta, moglie di Massimiliano d’Asburgo – sfortunato fratello dell’Imperatore d’Austria Francesco Giuseppe. Il gioiello è arrivato di recente a Trieste, grazie all’intervento solerte ed essenziale della Fondazione CRTrieste che se l’è aggiudicato nel corso di un’asta e che lo renderà fruibile al pubblico dalla prossima primavera nella dimora della coppia imperiale, prima della loro partenza per il Messico.

Un manufatto di straordinaria eleganza, frutto della maestria degli orefici messicani: un raffinato intreccio di filigrana, racemi, foglie e fiori, con diamanti, rubini e smeraldi, che custodiscono l’elegante monogramma imperiale, disegnato da Massimiliano stesso. La corona, invece, è collocata su un cuscino d’oro filigranato con pietre preziose e diamanti. Lo scettro, dopo la fucilazione di Massimiliano, è arrivato, assieme al corredo ed a parte della dote di Carlotta, in Belgio dove il sovrano Leopoldo II lo ha donato, quale segno di gratitudine, ad Adrien Goffinet segretario del sovrano, cui era stato affidato il compito di ricondurre Carlotta, affetta da un grave squilibrio mentale –probabilmente causato delle vicende messicane– nella sua patria natale. Da allora è sempre stato parte integrante dei beni della famiglia del barone Goffinet.

Il manufatto ha conservato, per oltre 150 anni, al suo interno un inedito documento manoscritto, datato maggio 1864, che dichiarava “gratitudine, adesione e lealtà, …amore, riconoscenza… e rispetto” nei confronti della futura imperatrice, figura di cui ancora si sa poco, ma già preceduta dalla fama della sua filantropia.

I

n 2024 Castello di Miramare will host one of the most important displays in history: a one-item exhibit featuring the extraordinary sceptre of Empress Charlotte of Mexico, better known as Carlota, wife to Maximilian I of Mexico – ill-fated brother of Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria.

Fondazione CRTrieste’s intervention was crucial in ensuring the return of this exceptional jewel to Trieste, as it promptly outbid its counterparts when the sceptre was auctioned a few months ago. Fondazione wishes to present the Empress’ sceptre to the public next spring, when it will be displayed in the home that the imperial couple shared before moving to Mexico.

The unparalleled beauty of this invaluable artifact testifies to the virtuosity of Mexican goldsmiths: an openwork in gold filigree, rubies, emeralds, diamonds, and finely chiselled friezes of flowers and foliage frames the imperial monogram designed by Maximilian I himself. The crown is placed on an openwork cushion in gold trimmings, embellished with rubies, emeralds, and bezel set diamonds. After the execution of Maximilian I, Charlotte’s trousseau and remaining dowry, including the sceptre, were sent back to Belgium, and donated as a sign of gratitude by King Leopold II to the crown’s secretary, Baron Adrien Goffinet. Goffinet had been appointed with the delicate task of bringing the empress dowager Charlotte back to Belgium, after the sudden deterioration of her mental health – possibly a result of recent events taking place in Mexico. From that moment onwards, the sceptre remained in possession of the Goffinet family.

For over 150 years a handwritten secret has been hiding inside the sceptre: a document carrying the date of May 1864 and declaring “gratitude, devotion, and loyalty, …, love, appreciation, … and respect” to the future Empress, whose whole story is still unclear today, but whose philanthropic reputation was known across the two continents.

I luoghi dell’arte

S

ono custodi della bellezza e luoghi di incontro e di scambio.

Spesso nascoste tra le vie del centro o nelle periferie, le piccole gallerie d’arte sono posti perfetti dove prendersi una pausa dalla routine quotidiana. Ecco quelle da non perdere a Trieste.

Partendo da viale XX Settembre, al primo piano del civico 33, troverete lo spazio Trart guidato dalla storica dell’arte Federica Luser. Trart è un contenitore di esperienze culturali e ponte tra diverse culture. Nato per colmare le lacune nella storia dell’arte tra il XIX e il XX secolo, trart guarda anche al futuro, supportando giovani artisti e diffondendo la conoscenza delle arti attraverso studi, mostre e una linea editoriale dedicata. Nelle vicinanze, in via Crispi 28, ha invece sede la Galleria EContemporary.

Fondata da Elena Cantori, è un punto di riferimento per gli amanti dell’arte contemporanea. Oltre a collaborare con artisti affermati, la galleria dà spazio anche a talenti emergenti. Attraverso mostre ed eventi, connette artisti, collezionisti e appassionati, rendendo l’arte accessibile anche a chi ha limitata esperienza nel campo. Poco più distante, situato in una ex rivendita di alcolici in via Canova 9, troviamo DoubleRoom arti visive, uno spazio di dibattito culturale all’avanguardia con un focus sulla videoarte, la performance e la sperimentazione. Dal 2012 è la sede del Gruppo78 e ne conserva l’archivio. La mission del curatore Massimo Premuda è “innescare un pensiero critico e costruttivo”, proprio attraverso l’arte contemporanea.

Con sede in via del Monte 2/1, Trieste Contemporanea è un vero e proprio hub dedicato all’arte contemporanea. Un luogo dove potete trovare mostre, incontri, workshop e persino “videospritz”, momenti informali per discutere d’arte sorseggiando un aperitivo. Trieste Contemporanea ha anche una biblioteca di arte contemporanea, che fa parte del Sistema Bibliotecario Nazionale.

E, a proposito di aperitivi, se volete fare una sosta senza rinunciare all’arte, il bar libreria Knulp è il posto che fa per voi. Il locale in via della Madonna del Mare 7a è infatti la sede espositiva permanente dell’associazione DayDreaming Project, fondata da Giovanni Spano. Dal 2007 l’associazione organizza esposizioni, coinvolgendo artisti locali e internazionali. Da quest’anno cura le mostre anche alla Sala di Pietra di Hangar Teatri in via Pecenco 8. In Cavana, in via San Rocco, sorge Spazio Cavò. Storica sede di Alpe Adria Cinema, oggi è uno spazio indipendente dedicato all’arte e alle culture

del contemporaneo, la cui programmazione, curata da Cizerouno, è diretta da Massimiliano Schiozzi. Ospitando mostre, incontri e laboratori, Spazio Cavò crea sinergie con altre realtà artistiche e culturali a livello regionale, nazionale e internazionale. È anche uno dei luoghi del progetto Cavana Stories, che mira a recuperare le memorie del quartiere di Cavana attraverso l’arte.

Se vi trovate nei pressi della stazione ferroviaria, non potete perdervi la Tivarnella Art Consulting di Enea Chersicola. Oltre ad essere uno studio di consulenza artistica per artisti, collezionisti e appassionati, con sedi anche a Venezia e New York, lo spazio in via Tivarnella 5 propone ricercate mostre d’arte contemporanea di artisti emergenti, con un focus sui giovani. Il Palazzo Panfili in via della Geppa ospita invece l’Atelier Home Gallery, una meta imperdibile per gli art lovers in cerca di posti non convenzionali. Fondato dagli artisti Roberto del Frate e Roberta de Jorio, l’atelier organizza esposizioni, corsi di pittura e conversazioni legate alla psicanalisi e all’arte all’interno di una dimora d’epoca. L’eclettico appartamento ospita inoltre l’atelier di Roberto del Frate e l’esposizione permanente dei lavori dei due artisti fondatori. Tra i luoghi particolari da visitare, non può mancare il LeoLab, un laboratorio di architettura, arte e design fondato nel 2011 in via dei Leo 6/a e che originariamente era l’atelier dello scultore muggesano Ugo Carà. Lo spazio al secondo piano ospita mostre ed eventi ed uno showroom in cui il proprietario, l’architetto Giovanni Andrea Panizon, espone le sue opere artistiche, come sculture in terracotta e oggetti di design.

Posti perfetti dove prendervi una pausa dalla routine quotidiana.

hey are the keepers of beauty, but also places of exchange and dialogue: the small art galleries of Trieste, concealed in the maze of alleys of the old town or unexpectedly waiting behind a corner in the suburbs, are perfect places to enjoy a break from everyday life and its routine.

In the following paragraphs our readers will find a list of our personal favourites.

At no. 33 of Viale XX Settembre, the building’s staircase to the first floor leads into Trart space: art historian Federica Luser is at the helm of this project, which serves as a repository of cultural experiences, as well as a bridge between cultures. Trart initially focused mainly on the lesser-known aspects of art history of the 19th and the 20th century, but soon extended its reach to the promotion of young artists and the dissemination of art knowledge through studies, exhibitions, and a dedicated publication series. In nearby Via Crispi, at no. 28, EContemporary Gallery is a favourite spot for contemporary art enthusiasts. Founder Elena Cantori not only cooperates with prominent artists, but is also happy to feature the works of promising young talents. EContemporary events and activities foster connections between artists, collectors, and enthusiasts, making the world of contemporary art more accessible to a wider audience. A couple of streets away, at no.9 Via Canova, a former wine shop is now the seat of DoubleRoom, the home of cutting-edge cultural debate with specific focus on visual art, performance, and experimentation. The headquarters of Gruppo78 since 2012, DoubleRoom hosts the group’s valuable archive.

Contemporanea’s library of contemporary art is part of the National Library System. If the idea of art in a convivial setting appeals to you, you may want to pop into Knulp book café, at no. 7a of Via della Madonna del Mare: it has a permanent exhibition space dedicated to Giovanni Spano’s DayDreaming Project. Since 2007 Knulp association has organised countless events, involving both local and international artists, and earlier this year it started curating the exhibitions of Sala di Pietra at Hangar Teatri (Via Pecenco no.8). Moving ahead towards the seafront, in the neighbourhood of Cavana, the historic space of Alpe Adria Cinema in Via San Rocco is now the seat of Spazio Cavò: an independent art space

focusing on contemporary culture directed by Massimiliano Schiozzi and curated by Cizerouno cultural association. Through exhibitions, workshops, and events, Spazio Cavò promotes synergies between regional, national, and international artistic organisations. It is also involved in the project Cavana Stories, aimed at preserving the history of Cavana through art.

If you find yourself near Trieste’s railway station, you cannot forego a visit to Enea Chersicola’s Tivarnella Art Consulting: this art consulting agency addresses mainly artists, collectors, and enthusiasts, and has two further seats in Venice and New York, respectively. In Trieste, the space of Via Tivarnella no.5 also hosts contemporary art exhibitions featuring young up-and-coming artists.

Heading back towards the city centre, in Via della Geppa, Atelier Home Gallery is a real treat for art lovers in search of the unconventional: within the walls of this historic residence, founders and artists Roberto del Frate and Roberta de Jorio organise exhibitions, painting classes, and discussion meetings on psychoanalysis and art. This eclectic studio also hosts Roberto del Frate’s atelier and a permanent exhibition of the artworks signed by the two founders.

Established in 2011 at no. 6/a of Via dei Leo, LeoLab is an architecture, art, and design workshop in what was formerly the atelier of Muggia-born sculptor Ugo Carà. The current owner, architect Giovanni Andrea Panizon, has divided the second floor into an exhibition and event space, on one side, and a showroom for his clay sculptures and design items, on the other.

Questo itinerario non può che cominciare dalla Libreria Antiquaria Umberto Saba [1]di via San Nicolò, sacro tempio della letteratura, ormai aperta solo in forma di… poesia. “Una strana bottega d’antiquario s’apre, a Trieste, in una via secreta. D’antiche legature un oro vario l’occhio per gli scaffali errante allieta. Vive in quell’aria tranquillo un poeta. Dei morti in quel vivente lapidario la sua opera compie, onesta e lieta, d’Amor pensoso, ignoto e solitario.” Oggigiorno Umberto Saba, ormai presente solo in forma di… scultura, potrebbe prolungare il suo cammino verso la Libreria Minerva [2], poco più in là,

nella stessa via, un punto di riferimento per ogni lettore, grazie all’accurato lavoro dei soci Tommaso, Andrea e Alessandro. Altrimenti, il poeta potrebbe dirigersi nella zona dell’antico ghetto, a caccia di vecchi libri, dal Rigattiere [3] o da Achille [4].

O forse potrebbe curiosare nel negozio di fumetti Neopolis [5] magari per scoprire di più sul nuovo titolo di Zerocalcare? Sulla via del ritorno potrebbe passare in Tergesteo, alla Ubik [6], non prima di aver salutato, in versetti, Gabriele d’Annunzio, in modalità molto-preso-dalla-lettura.

In piazza Hortis, Italo Svevo, altro monumento della letteratura, non vede l’ora di entrare nel nuovo museo LETS [7], dove sarà in compagnia degli altri grandi autori triestini. Nell’attesa potrebbe fare tappa alla Drogheria 28 [8], lì vicino, sulla salita. Ma niente vernici, solo bei volumi d’ogni formato in questa straordinaria libreria antiquaria che, come dice il suo titolare Simone Volpato: “Accoglie libri, antichi, moderni, unici, che raccontano le storie di scrittori, poeti, collezionisti”.

Ma Ettore Schmitz da quelle parti, in via del Lazzaretto, via cara a Umberto Saba, avrebbe una nuova libreria da visitare. Si chiama Zeno Bandini [9], in omaggio al più celebre personaggio sveviano (però questo Zeno di cognome non fa Cosini), ed è dedicata ai libri in prima edizione, copie rare, spesso autografate. Magari incontrerà John Fante, in forma di… firma?

con Svevo è nata lì, a Ponterosso, sopra il caffè dedicato al vecchio James.

Prima era stato a sbirciare tra i tomi della Libreria Dedalus [10] (che onore!) e adesso farà un salto all’ex Libreria Borsatti (ora Mondadori Bookstore [11]) che hanno entrambe un bel settore di libri a metà prezzo: roba per le sue tasche. In via Oriani, c’è addirittura un hotel, il Victoria, aperto in uno dei tanti palazzi dove lo scrittore irlandese abitò. Proprio lì di fianco, oggi Joyce troverebbe una libreria molto ben fornita, chiamata NeroSuBianco [12]. Se poi non volesse spendere nemmeno un euro, allora dovrebbe salire in via Madonnina verso San Giusto, e arrivare da Libribelli [13], l’idea geniale e generosa di Giorgio Cescutti: un posto dove i libri non si comprano né si vendono, si prendono gratis! Tornando giù verso il centro città c’è un altro tempio delle parole, l’Antico Caffè San Marco [14], caffè letterario, dove sono passati tutti i grandi scrittori triestini di ieri di oggi.

Ursich, libraia appassionata nonché animatrice del Trieste Bookfest, popolare festival letterario locale. Nel reparto libreria ora collabora anche la scrittrice Nadia Dalle Vedove: più letterari di così…

Sempre in via Battisti, ma dall’altra parte, nello stabile che ospita l’Oviesse, c’è la Libreria Lovat [15], la più grande della città, molto ben assortita con scelte di qualità, uno spazio molto ampio dedicato ai lettori più piccoli e un caffè con splendida vista sui libri e sugli alberi del viale XX settembre.

A questo punto può essere una buona idea deviare verso il giardino pubblico che ospita le statue che ricordano tutti ma proprio tutti i grandi scrittori triestini. Quattro passi nel verde e poi una visita da Zuckerman [16], giovane libreria di cose antiche dove trovare volumi del passato e svariate curiosità.

E per curiosare nell’anima culturale della città vale la pena di entrare nella Libreria TS360 [21], la libreria slovena di Trieste, per completare il giro!

very book is a journey, every bookshop is a world, and Trieste is full of bookshops! Our journey necessarily starts from Libreria Antiquaria Umberto Saba [1] in Via San Nicolò, a modern-day sacred temple of literature, now surviving only in its sublimated poetry form. “A strange shop of an antiquarian beckons, in Trieste, in an obscure street.

Eyes, scanning shelves, are cheered as they light on old bindings chased in all shades of gold sheet. In that atmosphere quietly lives a poet. In that live monument to the dead and gone his honest, joyful labour is completed as he thinks of love, solitary, unknown.” (from U. Saba Autobiography (15), translation by Patrick Worsnip, 2022). Today, Umberto Saba, whose presence lingers in the form of a statue, would probably continue on this street to Libreria Minerva [2], just a few steps ahead: thanks to the relentless efforts of business partners Tommaso, Andrea, and Alessandro, Minerva is now a beacon for Trieste’s readers. Heading in the opposite direction, Saba would probably wander into the old ghetto on the hunt for antique volumes on the shelves of Rigattiere’s [3] or Achille’s [4].

He may even stop to leaf through a comic book or two at Neopolis [5], perhaps captured by one of Zerocalcare’s latest titles… On his way back, in the Tergesteo passage, he may pop into Ubik [6], after greeting Gabriele d’Annunzio, so immersed in his reading that he hardly notices him.

forward to visiting the newly opened LETS Museum [7], where he can meet his fellow authors and brilliant minds of Trieste. He may while away the time at Drogheria 28 [8], right around the corner: not for paints or brushes (despite the name of this place, which means “general store”), but books − beautiful and precious volumes of every possible size and shape, filling every corner of this extraordinary antique bookshop. According to the owner Simone Volpato “there are both antique and modern books, all unique, all telling the tales of writers, poets, and collectors”.

places, to visit a new bookshop named after his most famous character: at Zeno Bandini’s [9] (which sounds a little like Cosini) connoisseurs rejoice in front of the impressive selection of first editions, rarities, and autographed copies. Who knows, even John Fante’s signature may be hiding somewhere among these pages…

Next stop, next writer, next statue. James Joyce, brisk pace and empty pockets, is headed towards Berlitz School in Ponterosso. That is where he met Svevo and where the two became friends, right above the café that is now named after Joyce himself. A while ago he was probably looking through the half-price section of Libreria Dedalus [10] (such an honour), and he is now ready for a visit to former Libreria Borsatti (now Mondadori Bookstore [11]), another bookshop with a fine selection of paperbacks for avid readers of modest means. Hotel Victoria, on nearby Via Oriani, was once an apartment building where Joyce used to live. Right next to it NeroSuBianco [12] bookshop is another must stop. And if times were so dire, that he could not even afford to spend a single coin, he would probably climb the hill of San Giusto along Via della Madonnina, all the way to Libribelli [13]: conceived by the brilliant and generous mind of Giorgio Cescutti, this is a place where books are neither bought nor sold, but taken home for free! On the way back to the city centre lies another one of Trieste’s temples of words: Antico Caffé San Marco [14] is the literary café, whose seats have accommodated every great writer who has

ever lived in Trieste. In his Microcosmi – Microcosms Claudio Magris celebrated the “vital and visceral variety” characterising this place.

San Marco has been doubling as full-fledged bookshop for ten years now, under the leadership of Loriana Ursich, passionate librarian and host of Trieste Bookfest, the city’s popular literary festival. Writer Nadia Dalle Vedove is the latest addition to the bookshop team – it does not get more literary than that …

On the other side of the same street, namely Via Battisti, the top floors of Oviesse shopping centre are the realm of Libreria Lovat [15], the largest bookshop in the city: a vast assortment of fine quality, a spacious area for young readers, and a café with a stunning view of the books, on one side, and the treetops of Viale XX Settembre, on the other. From here the public park is just a stone’s throw away: a stroll through its gravel paths will bring you face to face with the statues of possibly all great Triesteborn writers. Nearby Zuckerman [16] is a new bookshop devoted to the antique, with a great selection of books from the past, as well as a few curiosities. Our journey would not be complete without a visit to the shrine of the city’s cultural soul: Libreria TS360 [21], Trieste’s Slovenian bookshop.

Every bookstore is full of temptations for book lovers. We are sure that the right temptation is waiting for you in one of the establishments mentioned in these paragraphs, or one from the additional list marked on our map.

Zuckerman La libreria di Martina propone tutto ciò che è cartaceo e antico. È molto apprezzata dai collezionisti, che in città abbondano e che possono scegliere tra 40.000 titoli, dai libri illustrati per bambini a quelli su Trieste, oltre che a foto e cartoline del passato.

Agnese Divo, triestina, fotografa professionista, dopo il diploma al Nordio di Trieste ha proseguito gli studi in fotogra fia all’ISFAV di Padova (Istituto di fotogra fia e arti visive) dove si è specializzata in reportage. Ha iniziato il suo lavoro con la Fratelli Alinari nel 1995 e ha collaborato con diversi teatri di prosa tra Gorizia e Trieste, tra cui il Teatro Stabile Sloveno di Trieste con cui ha avuto un lungo rapporto di lavoro.

Da diversi anni concentra i suoi interessi sul reportage di viaggio, approfondendo in particolare l’ambito geografico mitteleuropeo in cui vive, collaborando con alcune case editrici italiane, come il Touring e riviste di viaggio tra cui Bell’Italia e Bell’Europa.

After graduating at the Nordio high school in Trieste, she continued her studies in photography at the ISFAV in Padua (Institute of Photography and Visual Arts) where she specialised in photojournalism. She began her work with Fratelli Alinari in 1995 and has collaborated with various theatres between Gorizia and Trieste, including the Slovene Theatre in Trieste, with which she has had a long working relationship.

For several years now, she has been focussing on travel photography, in particular the Central European geographical area where she lives. She collaborates with a number of Italian publishers such as Touring and travel magazines including Bell’Italia and Bell’Europa.

La vicinanza del Magazzino 26 che ospiterà il polo museale triestino rende l’intera area un comprensorio culturale e congressuale di primo livello. E la collocazione di confine, con quattro aeroporti internazionali raggiungibili entro novanta minuti (Trieste, Venezia, Treviso, Lubiana) e cinque Paesi alla massima distanza di cinque ore di automobile (Slovenia, Croazia, Ungheria, Austria e Germania), gli conferisce una centralità mitteleuropea che negli anni a venire potrà apportare ulteriore sviluppo.

Sul tavolo vi sono infatti già nuovi progetti, anche grazie alla solidità di un socio di maggioranza come Generali: l’ampliamento della struttura (in concessione dal Comune) con l’acquisizione e la ristrutturazione di un altro Magazzino adiacente, il 27 bis; e l’estensione del comprensorio all’affaccio a mare prospiciente il Magazzino 28, la cui risistemazione arricchirebbe il centro di un’ampia area verde e di spazi di riunione all’aperto, rendendolo un sito congressuale sul mare versatile e unico in Europa.

here a few decades ago two port warehouses overflowed with metals on behalf of the London Metal Exchange, today stands the largest convention centre in the Northeast. With ten thousand square metres of meeting space, six independent halls, a two-thousand-seat auditorium and a terrace overlooking the sea, the Trieste Convention Center (TCC) has already become, in the first year of its opening after the pandemic, a landmark in the sector and a model of urban regeneration. It was inaugurated in 2020, at the height of the Covid lockdown, and actually kicked off in May 2022 at the end of the restrictions. The year 2023, the first effective year of management, ended with 375 days/events

distributed among the six halls, more than 60,000 visitors and a space occupancy rate of 67%, rising to 85% in November and December. And for 2024, the bookings already confirmed ensure further significant growth in all indicators.

Its location in the renovated Warehouses 27 and 28 in the area of Trieste’s old port, sixty hectares of valuable land at the top of the Adriatic, places the TCC chaired by Roberto Morelli at the centre of one of the largest urban regeneration projects of the last twenty years. The proximity of Warehouse 26, which will house Trieste’s museum centre, makes the entire area a firstclass cultural and conference district.

And its border location, with four international airports that can be reached within ninety minutes (Trieste, Venice, Treviso, Ljubljana) and five countries at a maximum distance of five hours by car (Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Austria and Germany), gives it a MittelEuropean centrality that can bring further development in the years to come.

In fact, new projects are already on the table, thanks in part to the solidity of a majority shareholder such as Generali: the expansion of the facility (under concession from the Municipality) with the acquisition and renovation of another adjacent Warehouse, the 27 bis; and the extension of the complex to the sea facing Warehouse 28, whose redevelopment would provide the centre with a large green area and open-air meeting spaces, thus turning it into a versatile seaside conference site, a unique venue in Europe.

zzardando una traduzione maccheronica utile solo per capirsi, il finger food è il “cibo a portata di dita”, nato per essere pratico (si mangia in un sol boccone, senza posate), l’ideale per ricevimenti informali dove non c’è la necessità di far sedere le persone. Da questo punto di partenza, in realtà, ha fatto salti quantici stimolando –come spesso accade con le novità– la fantasia e la creatività di generazioni di chef.

E diventando non più un cibo piccolo, semmai un piccolo tesoro di gusto, quando si usano grandi ingredienti.

Less is more? È davvero il caso di dirlo e chi ha assaggiato del finger food di alta qualità sa perfettamente a cosa ci riferiamo.

Insomma, siamo pronti a presentarvi ricette invernali –essendo periodo di festività– per convincervi che si può imbastire un menù sontuoso a base di piccole delizie da gustare in piedi. Ma sarà come sempre fondamentale comprare ingredienti di stagione da botteghe indipendenti e da piccoli agricoltori locali, altrimenti sarà come sparare a salve. Partendo da questa semplice regola scoprirete la genialità del finger food, come ad esempio la possibilità di sbizzarrirvi con gli impiattamenti utilizzando vassoi, ciotole, taglieri e piatti da portata eclettici. Apparecchierete senza lo stress di dover lavare le stoviglie o contarle per verificare se ne avete per tutti.

A guardar bene, storicamente, il finger food viene da lontano. Mangiare con le mani è in realtà una tradizione che fa parte della storia del cibo e della convivialità, ancor oggi vivissima in molte

ery simply put, the concept behind finger food is “food one can hold between their fingers” – practical, easy to handle (no cutlery needed, it is gone in one bite), and simply ideal for informal, lap-service or standing gatherings.

At least, this is how it started: it has significantly evolved since then, inspiring generations of chefs and their subsequent original creations – as innovations usually do. No longer synonymous with “small-sized food”, therefore: rather, the recipe of little treasures of taste, when the quality of ingredients is great. Less is more, is it not? Yes, this time it really is: those who have tasted high-quality finger food know it well.

IES is ready to present this issue’s set of recipes: they have been specifically selected for the cold season and, most importantly, for the imminent festivities, to convince our readers that a sumptuous menu can also be served as a standing buffet of little delicacies. As usual, high-quality in-season ingredients are fundamental – better, yet, if they come from independent delis and small local businesses and producers – otherwise, it would be like firing blanks. This very simple rule will disclose the true brilliance of finger food, starting from the various plating options, like trays, bowls, and every possible kind of platter.

You can set the table without worrying about the dishes you will have to wash, or counting and recounting your service sets to make sure you have enough dinnerware for all your guests.

Truth be told, finger food has long been part of our culinary history: fingers were the only option long before cutlery was invented, and eating with your hands is still an integral part of conviviality in numerous cultures, with their specific set of rules and etiquette (how to hold food, which hand to use, etc.). After all, most street food is a kind of finger food: Trieste’s traditional rebechin (i.e., snack), like rodoleto (i.e., ham sandwich) or polpetta, has always been meant to be eaten as finger food.

Mangiare con le mani è in realtà una tradizione che fa parte della storia del cibo e della convivialità, ancor oggi vivissima in molte culture.

culture, con un suo specifico galateo su come prendere il cibo e quale mano utilizzare. E lo street food, del resto, non è spesso semplicemente finger food? Il rebechin alla triestina, come il “rodoleto” o la polpetta, non sono del resto pensati per essere gustati con le mani?

Volendo dare una qualche sorta di origine storica al fenomeno, si potrebbe farlo partire dai “canapés” francesi di fine Settecento… Etimologicamente “canapé” indicava il sofà: visto che gli ingredienti spesso venivano fatti “sedere” adagiati su un crostino di pane, il termine divenne perfetto per questa nuova tipologia di consumo del cibo.

C’è poi un’ultima qualità funzionale non da poco (e dopo promettiamo di non tediarvi più e di passare alle ricette…): è pensato anche per poter tenere in una mano un bicchiere, lasciando l’altra libera di scegliere delizie e mangiarle. Brindisi, aperitivi, rinfreschi e cocktail party (la lista non finisce qua) vanno a braccetto con il finger food.

Vi proponiamo delle ricette fuori dagli schemi, contaminando un po’ la tradizione triestina (fatta del resto di contaminazioni…) e introducendo qualche spezia e un po’ d’Oriente. Per accompagnarvi in questo universo di possibilità dove davvero si può osare, per stupire ospiti e palati.

A subsequent evolution of finger food could be identified in late-18th-century French canapés… the word “canapé” means “sofa”, and it is particularly fitting, considering the way ingredients were usually “seated” on a slice of bread or a crouton.

Last, but not least (and then straight to the recipes, it is a promise): finger food only requires one hand, leaving the other free to hold a glass. Toasts, aperitifs, small receptions, cocktail parties (just to name a few) and finger food are a match made in heaven.

The following recipes are slightly bolder than usual: they are contaminations of Trieste’s traditional cuisine (a result of contamination itself…), with the addition of a few spices and a scent of the East. Because finger food is a whole universe waiting to be discovered, where you can dare, amaze your guests, and delight their palates.

1 Cavolo nero Olio extravergine d’oliva Sale di Pirano

1 bunch Cavolo nero kale Extra-virgin olive oil Piran flaked salt

Tagliare le foglie di cavolo a pezzettini, togliendo la parte più dura del gambo.

In una ciotola, mescolarlo con qualche cucchiaio di olio evo. Disporre le foglie su una teglia da forno ben sparpagliate ed infornare a 170° per 15 minuti.

Lasciare raffreddare, cospargere con del sale di Pirano.

Tear kale leaves into bitesized pieces and remove the toughest parts of the stem. In a bowl mix kale chunks with a few table spoons of EVO oil. Spread out in an even layer on the baking sheet (no overlapping). Preheat oven to 170° C (ca. 340° F) and bake for about 15 minutes. Let the chips cool, sprinkle with Piran salt, and serve.

Puff pastry: combine cold butter cubes with whisked flour, the egg, and a pinch of salt. Gently knead the dough until it clumps together. Wrap in plastic wrap and let chill for 30 minutes in the fridge.

On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out with a rolling pin, and then cut into disks.

Transfer disks to a muffin tin and bake in pre-heated oven (180°C / 350°F) for about 15 minutes. Use a pie weight to keep the borders in shape (blind baking). Let cool.

If you are pressed for time, you may consider using chilled uncooked puff pastry dough sheets or buying uncooked puff pastry cups from your baker’s.

Peel and slice pears. Place in a pan with butter, cook and season with salt and pepper.

In a different pan melt jamar cheese, then add yoghurt and gently stir to form a cream.

Fill each puff pastry cup with a few chunks of pear and jamar cream. Bake in preheated oven (180°C / 350°F) for another 15 minutes until gold. Let cool and sprinkle with satoreja before serving.

Preparare la pasta frolla: sul piano di lavoro impastare farina, uova, burro freddo a tocchetti ed un pizzico di sale.

Lavorare fino ad ottenere un impasto omogeneo. Avvolgere nella pellicola e far riposare per 30 minuti nel frigo.

Stendere con il mattarello, fare dei dischetti, adagiarli in una teglia da muffin e cuocere a 180°C per circa 15 minuti.

Aiutarsi con un peso per non far scendere i bordi. Fare raffreddare.

Se si ha poco tempo si può usare la pasta pronta, o comprare i cestini pronti presso una panetteria.

Tagliare le pere a fette, cuocere in padella con burro, e condire con sale e pepe.

In una padella sciogliere lo jamar ed aggiungere lo yogurt formando una crema.

In ogni cestino di pasta frolla mettere qualche pezzo di pera e ricoprire con la crema allo jamar. Infornare a 180°C per altri 15 minuti, o finché iniziano a prendere un bel colore. Aspettare che si raffreddino prima di servire con qualche foglia di santoreggia.

1 homemade baguette (our tip: try Pagna baker’s) 200g/0.5 lb Zobec’s smoked salmon of Bagnoli della Rosandra or Friulana smoked trout 300g (2 1/3 cups) fresh chard 100ml (2/5 cup) crème fraiche 1 tbsp freshly grated kren (horseradish) Peppercorn Marine salt Dill leaves

Cuocere in acqua bollente la barbabietola per 45 minuti o finché cotta. Pelare e frullare assieme alla panna, il cren ed un pizzico di sale. Affettare la baguette e tostare i crostini in forno, spalmare un cucchiaino di salsa alla barbabietola, adagiare sopra una fetta di salmone o trota, guarnire con qualche foglia di aneto, e una macinata di pepe.

– Cook chard in boiling water for about 45 minutes. Peel and pour chard in a mixer with crème fraiche, kren, and a pinch of salt. Mix until you obtain a uniform spread-like paste. Slice your baguette and toast slices in the oven.

Spread a teaspoon of chard paste on top of each slice, lay a slice of salmon or trout on top, garnish with dill and a pinch of peppercorn.

Less is more? È davvero il caso di dirlo e chi ha assaggiato del finger food di alta qualità sa perfettamente a cosa ci riferiamo.

— Less is more, is it not?

Yes, this time it really is: those who have tasted high-quality finger food know it well.

Chiedere al macellaio di tagliare le costine in pezzi piccoli (lunghezza circa 5cm). Tritare aglio, cipolla e zenzero e aggiungere le spezie, che consigliamo di acquistare intere e macinare sul momento. Aggiungere il miele e la salsa di soia creando una salsa da marinatura.

Cospargere le costine con la marinatura e mettete in frigo per 24 ore, idealmente mescolando almeno una volta. Cuocerle in forno per 30-40 minuti (dipende dalla grandezza) a 200°C. In alternativa sono buonissime anche cotte alla griglia!

– Ask your butcher to cut your pork ribs short (about 5cm / 2in long). Finely mince garlic, onion, and ginger, and mix them with the rest of your spices (preferably freshly ground). Add honey and soy sauce and stir to obtain a marinade. Rub marinade on the ribs and then chill in the fridge for 24 hours, stirring them halfway through the marination process. Slow cook at 200°C / 390°F in the oven for about 30 to 40 minutes (depending on the ribs’ size).

They also taste great when grilled!

Coarsely chop chocolate. In a small saucepan boil cream, then remove from the stove and add chopped chocolate.

Stir until chocolate melts, to obtain a smooth paste known as ganache. Pour ganache into three bowls of the same size.

Pour cinnamon and orange zest into the first bowl; coffee into the second; and salt into the third one. Mix carefully and then place in the fridge to chill for a couple of hours.

Work the content of each bowl separately: shape into little spheres and roll the cinnamon ones into pistachio powder, the coffee ones into dark cocoa, and the salt ones into the hazelnut grind. Keep in the fridge until serving time.

Tagliare grossolanamente il cioccolato.

In un pentolino, portare la panna ad ebollizione, poi togliere dal fuoco ed aggiungere il cioccolato tagliato, mescolare bene finché si sia sciolto tutto e fino ad ottenere una crema vellutata, ovvero la ganache.

Dividerla in tre ciotole distinte.

Nella prima aggiungere la cannella e la scorza d’arancio, nella seconda il caffè e nella terza il sale. Mescolare bene e poi riporre in frigorifero per un paio d’ore.

Poi con le mani o con l’aiuto di un cucchiaio formare le palline e rotolare le prime nella granella di pistacchio, quelle al caffè nel cacao amaro e quelle al sale nella granella di nocciole. Conservare in frigo.

he kitchen is without a doubt the veritable shrine, within which a land’s tradition and culture are preserved. The kitchen is also the perfect workshop for innovation. In other words, everything seems to lead back to the realm of the palate and its numerous joys.

There are two types of public enterprises that cater to the palate of even the most demanding customer: traditional and creative. Each one of these categories has its own sub-types, harmoniously mixing different degrees of past and future. The good (great) thing is that Federazione Italiana Pubblici Esercizi – FIPE (i.e., Italian Federation of Public Establishments) welcomes them all. In the past 70 years FIPE has been working tirelessly to support those who devote every day of their working life to the long-standing Italian traditions of cuisine and hospitality. Restaurant owners, baristas, and every other professional in this business − they are the ones that provide us with a home away from home. Their establishments are crucial society’s meeting points throughout the entire country, and Trieste is no exception.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving”: these words of advice ascribed to Albert Einstein are particularly fitting to

illustrate the role of FIPE and its associates, who get up every day, roll up their shutter and “keep moving”.

Trieste, capital city of coffee

L

a città di Trieste, seppur piccola e contenuta, è un vero e proprio scrigno di tesori. Uno di questi è il fatto di essere riconosciuta come capitale del caffè in Italia e all’estero.

La storia del caffè a Trieste inizia agli inizi del Settecento, quando la città accolse le prime navi con carichi pieni di caffè e, grazie all’istituzione del Porto Franco nel 1719, la città divenne il principale porto dell’Impero Austroungarico e uno dei maggiori porti commerciali d’Europa. Grazie a questa sua posizione strategica, divenne presto un centro di commercio internazionale, attirando importatori e torrefattori da tutto il mondo. In quegli anni, le strade della città pullulavano di mercanti di ogni nazionalità, che si ritrovavano nei caffè per scambiare notizie e impressioni.

L’aroma del caffè si riversava nelle strade, creando un’atmosfera unica, fatta di cosmopolitismo e di fermento culturale.

In un’epoca in cui il mondo era ancora un luogo misterioso e affascinante, Trieste era un punto di incontro tra culture diverse. Qui, mercanti provenienti da tutto il mondo si incontravano per scambiare merci e idee. Il caffè era una bevanda esotica, che veniva importata da luoghi remoti. Era un simbolo di ricchezza e di cosmopolitismo.

Nel corso dei secoli, la città ha sviluppato una vera e propria cultura del caffè, che si riflette nella sua ricca tradizione di bar e caffè storici. Già nella prima metà dell’Ottocento si vide, in città, un forte aumento delle “Botteghe di caffè”: nel 1815 si potevano infatti contare già 38 caffetterie su 33.000 abitanti. Da lì seguirono le aperture del Caffè Tommaseo

nel 1830, il Caffè degli Specchi, risalente al 1839, e il Caffè Stella polare, inaugurato nel 1865. Questi locali, oltre a offrire una vasta scelta di preparazione, sono anche luoghi di ritrovo e di cultura, ospitando negli anni grandi letterati come Svevo, Saba e Joyce. In essi ancora oggi si respira un’atmosfera unica, che combina il fascino del passato con la modernità. Il caffè per Trieste è quindi anche un’espressione della sua identità. È una bevanda che racconta la storia della città, la sua apertura al mondo e la sua passione per la cultura.

Passeggiando per le strade del centro, è possibile immaginare le antiche glorie della città. L’odore del caffè che si sprigiona dai bar, i vicoli stretti e tortuosi, le facciate dei palazzi storici, tutto contribuisce a creare un’atmosfera magica. Il caffè qui è più di una semplice bevanda, è un’esperienza sensoriale che coinvolge tutti i sensi. È l’aroma intenso che si sprigiona dai chicchi appena macinati, il gusto ricco e corposo, la sensazione di calore che avvolge il corpo.

La passione per il caffè a Trieste è evidente anche nei suoi abitanti. Per i triestini, il caffè è più di una semplice bevanda, è un rito sociale, un momento di relax e di condivisione. Ne sono una prova i numeri relativi al consumo di questa bevanda, il doppio rispetto alla media nazionale.

Coffee itself is far from a mere beverage: it is an all-encompassing sensory experience. It starts with the intense aroma of freshly ground beans, followed by a rich, full-bodied flavour, all the way to the warmth that permeates one’s entire body.

Triestini fully embrace their city’s passion for coffee: indeed, locals regard their coffee break as a social ritual, during which participants share a moment of relaxation. Figures clearly reflect this tendency, as coffee consumption here is twice the national average.

Trieste is still a beloved destination for coffee enthusiasts, who can enjoy a truly unique experience in the history, culture, and taste of one of the world’s most popular beverages. A sip of coffee in Trieste tastes of past and present, and is the key to access one of the city’s most ancient traditions.

In the first half of the 19th century the number of “Botteghe del caffè” (lit. coffee workshops) increased exponentially: in 1815 Trieste had a record number of 38 coffee houses for a population of 33,000. Soon came the inauguration of some of the city’s historical cafés that are still open today: Caffè Tommaseo in 1830; Caffè degli Specchi in 1839; and Caffè Stella Polare in 1865. Temples of coffee, offering an ample choice of brews and preparations, but also cultural hotspots, where great minds used to meet – Svevo, Saba, Joyce, just to name a few. Today Trieste’s historic cafés appear almost unaltered: their unique atmosphere remains intact, like a suspended place where past splendour and modern days come to meet. Coffee has become an expression of Trieste’s identity: each sip tells a little bit of the city’s history, her arms open to the world, her heart open to culture.

A stroll through the pedestrian centre often turns into a walk through time, along an imaginary memory lane winding into the city’s glorious past. The scent of coffee emanating from the bustling cafés, the narrow alleys, the imposing façades of historic

rieste is certainly no big city. Her limited size resembles that of a little jewellery box full of sparkly treasures. Suffice it to mention her status as capital city of coffee, at both national and international level.

The city’s bond with coffee dates back to the early 18th century, and more specifically to the year 1719, when Trieste became the Free Port of the AustroHungarian Empire and one of the most important trade ports in Europe. As the first cargo ships with their freight of coffee started to reach these shores, Trieste’s strategic geographical position became increasingly evident, and soon the port area turned into a veritable hub of international commerce and a catalyser for coffee importers and roasters from all over the world.

In those days the city’s streets used to brim with foreign merchants, flocking into local cafés to trade news and exchange opinions. The scent of coffee used to overflow into the surrounding alleys, adding a unique note to the cosmopolitan atmosphere of cultural effervescence of those years.

At a time when the world was still a mysterious and fascinating place, Trieste stood at a crossroad between cultures: merchant ships seemed to unload new goods and new ideas almost every day; coffee was considered an exotic delicacy, imported from faraway lands – a symbol of wealth and cosmopolitanism.

el Porto Vecchio di Trieste, un tempo brulicante del via vai di merci dai luoghi più diversi e oggi centro di un progetto di riqualificazione urbana si trova il Magazzino 26, uno degli edifici più rappresentativi di un’architettura civile in cui si sposano felicemente estetica e funzionalità. Qui il Museo del Mare trova la giusta ambientazione di un racconto che si snoda tra navi, strumenti di navigazione, tecniche di pesca e storia della città.

Le collezioni sono organizzate in sezioni tematiche suddivise tra il terzo piano e il piano rialzato con una scelta espositiva che rielabora l’originaria funzione di stoccaggio delle merci e che fa della cassa il modulo estetico dell’esposizione: al posto di caffè, grano e stoffe, il visitatore troverà storie, vite e sguardi.

Si parte dalla città ottocentesca e dal suo porto, i cui destini corrono paralleli, entrambi dettagliati in un grande diorama. Alcuni filmati presentano

un mondo modellato sull’economia del mare e introducono i grandi temi del lavoro, dell’evoluzione delle imbarcazioni, dell’ingegneria e del design, dell’arte di andar per mare su un transatlantico piuttosto che su una barca a vela o un “topo” da pesca.

Il mare è un’opportunità e Trieste non è solo un luogo, ma anche tutte le rotte che conducono ai molteplici altrove possibili. Il navigare prende così diverse forme a seconda serva per commerciare, lavorare, esplorare il mondo, viaggiare per diletto o emigrare per necessità.

La navigazione richiede però specifiche competenze e nel percorso di visita si possono apprezzare i reperti provenienti dall’Accademia di Commercio e Nautica di Trieste, fondata dall’imperatrice d’Austria Maria Teresa nel 1754. sea used to dominate the city’s economic life, and documenting the evolution of maritime trade and watercrafts, engineering, design, and seafaring – be it on an ocean liner, a sailing boat, or a fishing “topo” (lit. “mouse”, used to refer to small fishing luggers that served as the traditional working crafts in this area of the Adriatic sea, N/T).

The sea is synonymous with opportunity, and Trieste is not just a place, but also a network of sea lanes leading to countless possible elsewheres.

Accordingly, seafaring may serve multiple purposes: trade, work, world exploration, recreation, migration …

There is a specific set of skills connected to the world of navigation, as witnessed by the items displayed in the Museum’s section dedicated to the Commercial and Nautical Academy of Trieste, established in 1754 by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. This collection features celestial navigation instruments employed by officers in training to determine their position and chart their course by using stars and other celestial bodies. The Nuremberg-made ancient terrestrial and celestial globes displayed in this section date back to 1728: their meticulously hand-painted

nce a lively milling of goods from various corners of the world, Porto Vecchio is now at the core of an ambitious project of urban redevelopment, starting from Magazzino 26, one of Trieste’s most peculiar historic buildings and a prime example of civil architecture successfully combining aesthetics and efficiency. Magazzino 26 hosts Museo del Mare (lit. Museum of the Sea), the perfect location for a unique itinerary through the city’s history amidst watercrafts, sailing instruments, and fishing techniques.

The Museum’s collections are displayed on two floors, namely third and mezzanine floor, and arranged in separate thematic sections reproducing the layout of the former warehouse: lines of crates that used to contain stocks of coffee, wheat, or textiles, have been turned into display cases for the various exhibition modules, offering visitors an unprecedented insight into past lives, stories, and views.

The exhibition opens with a diorama of Trieste and her port as they would have appeared in the 19th century. Their intertwined destinies are illustrated in a series of video clips showing how the

l’osservazione dei corpi celesti. Il mappamondo e il globo celeste esposti sono tra i reperti più antichi della collezione, realizzati a Norimberga nel 1728 mostrano, nei raffinati tratti dipinti a mano sulla carta, l’accuratezza cui era giunta la conoscenza geografica dell’epoca. Questi strumenti la cui precisione era fondamentale richiedevano di essere realizzati a regola d’arte, come la sfera armillare, atta a determinare la posizione degli astri e la bussola solare, che permetteva di determinare il nord tramite l’ombra dello gnomone di una meridiana.

Tanti sono gli attori della vita sul mare, le famiglie di armatori, come i Cosulich, le società di navigazione, in particolare il Lloyd: con loro si scoprono le navi qui progettate, sempre guardando all’innovazione nella costruzione degli scafi, nell’evoluzione dei motori, nel continuo miglioramento del comfort di bordo.

Fra i protagonisti di queste vicende non si può dimenticare Josef Ressel, poliedrico inventore a cui si deve il primo prototipo di elica applicato alla navigazione a vapore, contributo fondamentale all’evoluzione del trasporto marittimo. La sperimentazione avvenne proprio a Trieste e culminò nel test in mare del 1829 sulla nave a vapore Civetta che dimostrò l’efficacia dell’elica, ma che per un malfunzionamento si risolse in un fallimento. Ressel non vide riconosciuti i propri meriti, ma nel giro di breve tempo l’elica sarebbe diventata la norma su tutte le navi a vapore.

Le singole storie del golfo di Trieste raccontano un mare che è parte della quotidianità, della cultura, della storia e dell’economia della città. Episodi di una storia locale che si inseriscono nei più ampi percorsi degli eventi internazionali e tratteggiano un panorama globale in cui siamo tutti coinvolti.

Precision was key in celestial navigation, which is why each instrument had to be made by the book, including the armillary sphere, used to determine the exact position of stars and planets, and Burt’s solar compass, also known as sun compass, a surveying instrument used to locate true north through the shadow cast by its gnomon, similar to that of a sundial.

The numerous facets of sea life are reflected in the various business fields connected to it: suffice it to mention Cosulich, Trieste’s own ship-owning family, and Lloyd, the city’s most important shipping company: their historic vessels and respective designs chronicle the evolution of ship building through innovations of hulls and engines, as well as an increasing attention to the level of comfort on board.

A further name that connects Trieste to her sea is Josef Ressel, Czech forester and eclectic inventor, who designed one of the first working ship propellers for steam-powered vessels, thus opening the way to future innovations in

C’

è un piccolo parco dove le sculture in pietra “recitano” i versi di Dante, Pasolini e Igo Gruden. Si chiama “Piccolo Parco Sculture” ed è visitabile nell’esclusivo borgo marinaro di Portopiccolo, incastonato nella baia di Sistiana.

Quello di Portopiccolo è uno degli itinerari di KAMEN – Museo Diffuso delle Cave e della Pietra di Aurisina / Muzej nabrežinskega kamna in kamnolomov che nasce dell’amministrazione comunale di Duino Aurisina - Devin Nabrežina per raccontare e valorizzare il patrimonio storico, culturale, geologico legato alle cave e alla pietra di Aurisina, vero cuore pulsante del territorio.

artististiche transfrontaliere d’arte contemporanea, promosso dalla Rassegna Energia dei Luoghi/ Festival del Vento e della Pietra, ideato dalla giornalista Maddalena Giuffrida e dall’artista visiva e Presidente dell’Associazione Casa C.A.V.E. Fabiola Faidiga, con la curatela della critica d’arte Eva Comuzzi.

Per ogni edizione del Festival, che ha coinvolto negli ultimi quattro anni giovani studenti d’arte e maestri scultori, diverso è stato il motivo ispiratore delle opere: dai versi di Dante, di Pasolini e del poeta sloveno Igo Gruden, studenti e tutor hanno saputo ricavare dei veri e propri gioielli artistici, lavorando sugli scarti della lavorazione della pietra, in collaborazione con le aziende marmifere locali.

here is a park where stone sculptures “recite” verses by Dante, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Igo Gruden: it is “Piccolo Parco Sculture” (lit. Little Park of Sculptures), cradled within the tiny sea town of Portopiccolo, in the bay of Sistiana. It is one of the itineraries of KAMEN Diffused Museum of Quarries and Stone / Muzej nabrežinskega kamna in kamnolomov, a project led by the Municipality of Duino Aurisina – Devin Nabrežina with the aim of promoting the historic, cultural, and geological heritage of this territory through its identifying symbols, namely its quarries and marble.

The pure white of Karst limestone takes up multiple shapes in the artworks of Portopiccolo, thanks to cross-border art residencies for contemporary art: this initiative, in turn, originates from Energia dei Luoghi/ Festival del Vento e della Pietra (lit.

The Energy of Places/Festival of Wind and Stone), a festival conceived by journalist Maddalena Giuffrida and visual artist and president of CASA C.A.V.E. cultural Association Fabiola Faidiga, with the help of curator and art critic Eva Comuzzi.

In the past four years, every edition of the Festival saw the participation of young art students alongside master sculptors. Each year participants were presented with a different theme: verses by Dante, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Slovenian poet Igo Gruden suddenly materialised in the form of veritable artworks carved from marble scraps, thanks to the cooperation of local quarries.

The hamlet of Portopiccolo, once a limestone quarry itself, is the perfect venue for the display of these sculptures, which perfectly integrate within the town alleys and the “Tunnel della Pietra” (lit. Stone Tunnel), located next to Portopiccolo Art Gallery. Signature masterpieces by contemporary artists Edi Carrer and Alberto Fiorin are displayed alongside creations submitted by a number of young pupils from the Accademie di Belle Arti of Venice, Carrara, Ljubljana, and Vienna, as well as the “Srečko Kosovel” Higher Vocational College in Sežana.

Five new sculptures were recently added to this open-air museum in the making: visitors may now spot fantastic beasts inspired by Dante’s Divina Commedia, thorns of roses that look like capes, miniature cliffs with water running through the stone’s wrinkles and folds.

Guests can visit Piccolo Parco Sculture free of charge, as they stroll through the stone-paved alleys on a peculiar treasure hunt. Guided tours are available all year round but need to be booked in advance at Estplore: the perfect way to turn every stone of Portopiccolo’s history.

Recentemente altre cinque sculture si sono aggiunte a questo museo diffuso in continuo divenire: il visitatore potrà così imbattersi in animali fantastici ispirati alla Commedia dantesca, in spine di rose che sembrano un mantello o scogliere in miniatura dove può scorrere l’acqua tra le pieghe della pietra.

Il Piccolo Parco Sculture si può visitare liberamente, passeggiando tra i vicoli di pietra del borgo, quasi come una singolare caccia al tesoro artistica. Visite guidate ad hoc, progettate e curate dalle guide di Estplore, sono prenotabili tutto l’anno, per scoprire Portopiccolo anche attraverso la sua storia così intimamente legata alla pietra.

Il Carnevale come componente fondamentale della storia della città, come motivo di orgoglio, appuntamento

immancabile per tutti gli abitanti e attrattiva per i turisti.

Il Carnevale come fotografia dei tempi che cambiano, del passaggio generazionale, dei mutamenti avvenuti nel corso degli anni.

LOCAL GUIDES resta il tradizionale corso mascherato, la grande sfilata che andrà in scena domenica 11 febbraio.

A unire le varie compagini coinvolte e a lavorare incessantemente per tutto l’anno è il presidente delle compagnie carnevalesche, Mario Vascotto, sempre in prima linea per il funzionamento della maxi macchina organizzativa. È un veterano del Carnevale, con ben 53 edizioni alle spalle.

Chi ha vissuto in prima persona per decenni l’evento, e ha scritto pure diversi libri sull’argomento, è anche Diego Crevatin. La sua prima partecipazione risale al 1969; “per spiegare cos’è il Carnevale a Muggia bisogna esserci –spiega– a parole è difficile capire le emozioni e le sensazioni. Ed è stato anche un simbolo dell’evoluzione della città. Nel corso degli anni qualcosa si è perso, forse in termini di presenze, ma resta l’appartenenza alle varie compagnie, qualcosa di molto simile al palio di Siena. E poi c’è la festa della sfilata, il gran finale del Carnevale. È proprio quello che ricordo della mia prima volta, il divertimento della giornata, con amici e cugini, tutti insieme nelle vie di Muggia”.

Crevatin negli anni ha raccolto aneddoti, curiosità, storie e vicende legate all’evento. Tutto messo nero su bianco in cinque volumi. “Il corso mascherato si è svolto quasi sempre, anche con condizioni meteo proibitive.

Cito un episodio in particolare, forse l’annata più fredda di sempre, che mi è stata ricordata da chi l’ha vissuta negli anni ’50. Carri e maschere hanno sfilato con sei o sette gradi sotto zero.

Gli strumenti musicali non si potevano suonare, perché la condensa formata dalla saliva si ghiacciava. Ma nonostante tutto si è svolto regolarmente. Il gelo non ha frenato la voglia di allegria e di esibire le creazioni frutto di un lavoro lungo, accurato. Di cui essere fieri”.

uggia’s Carnevale is a time when friends come together, working tirelessly, month after month, to sew their costumes, build the precise mechanism of their parade floats, rehearse their comedy sketches, and carefully select their accessories.

Muggia’s Carnevale is a pillar of the town’s history, a source of pride, and a fixed appointment for locals and visitors alike.

Muggia’s Carnevale is a photo album chronicling the passing of time,

the alternation of generations, and the changes they bring year after year.

In 2024 Carnevale di Muggia will celebrate its 70th anniversary.

Countless initiatives will lead to the Carnival’s highpoint, namely the traditional parade of masks and floats taking place on 11th February.

The numerous actors involved in the upcoming celebration are coordinated by Mario Vascotto, president of the carnival companies: his relentless, year-long work ensures the smooth organisation of this festival. His 53-yearlong experience has earned him the title of Carnevale veteran.

Diego Crevatin’s first time at the Carnevale was in 1969. He has been participating in the festivities ever since and is the author of numerous published works on it: “The only way to effectively describe Muggia’s Carnevale is to be there in person. Words can hardly express the emotions it sparks. It is a symbol of Muggia’s evolution. Despite a slight decrease in terms of participation, today the Carnevale companies are as active as ever, attesting to a sense of belonging equal only to that of the contrade (city wards) of the Palio di Siena. It all culminates in the grand finale: the parade. My first memory of the Carnevale is, indeed, the parade day and my excitement as I walked with friends and family through the alleys of Muggia”.

Crevatin has spent decades collecting anecdotes, fun facts, stories, and traditions revolving around the Carnevale. His research was published in five volumes: “The parade of masks and floats must take place, come rain or shine. I was told about one time, back in the 1950s, when the temperature dropped to -7 degrees: in below-zero weather the brass section of the marching band could not play, because the moisture inside their instruments would freeze almost immediately. Nevertheless, the parade went on, ice and all: nothing could ever stop the Carnevale’s spirit and the urge to show the result of months of hard work.

on occorre essere allenati per fare una bella ciaspolata!

Ci sono, infatti, molti percorsi a fondovalle, privi di particolari difficoltà o dislivelli, da esplorare. Camminare sulla coltre imbiancata con le racchette da neve permette di immergersi nella profondità dei silenzi invernali, ammirando di volta in volta panorami diversi e scoprendo angoli incontaminati. Spesso questi percorsi seguono i tracciati praticabili in estate. Si pensi al Saisera Wild Track, un percorso ad anello lungo 11 chilometri che si sviluppa ai piedi delle imponenti pareti del Montasio e dello Jôf Fuârt da percorrere in sicurezza e senza alcuna particolare difficoltà tecnica.

I più allenati potranno imboccare a Sauris, il borgo montano nominato nel 2022 “Best Tourism Village” dall’Organizzazione Mondiale del Turismo delle Nazioni Unite (UNWTO), il sentiero lungo la dorsale del Monte Ruke che prosegue fino agli stavoli Beinte per poi rinfrancarsi dalla fatica - 3 ore di camminata circa - ammirando la spettacolare vista sul lago di Sauris e gustando deliziosi piatti tipici all’Agriturismo Monte Ruke. A Forni di Sopra, località dominata dalle Dolomiti Friulane, ci si può perdere tra i boschi di larice e abete sino a raggiungere le malghe Tartoi e Tragonia, magari in compagnia di caprioli e camosci.

A Piancavallo, nella provincia pordenonese, il versante del Collalto si adatta perfettamente per passeggiare con le ciaspole o, per chi non rinuncia alle due ruote nemmeno in inverno, per pedalare in fat-bike. Anche a MalborghettoValbruna si può salire in sella a una

fat-bike lungo il Puanina Tour, un sentiero tematico che conduce nell’Alpe di Ugovizza, nel cuore della Valcanale, dove il bestiame si alleva ancora con metodi tradizionali. Qui è ancora forte la testimonianza della vita contadina di un tempo e si respirano le radici di una cultura secolare. “Puanina” in lingua locale indica l’alpeggio ed è il nome con cui ancora oggi gli ugovizzani identificano la “loro montagna” dove si odono canti in lingua slovena e tedesca.

Nel territorio che ha visto nascere e crescere molti campioni olimpici, c’è una vastissima offerta di tracciati dedicati allo sci di fondo. A Paluzza, nei luoghi dei fratelli Giorgio e Manuela Di Centa, c’è il “Centro fondo Laghetti”.

A Sappada, lungo i 13 chilometri della Pista dei Campioni tra i boschi e il fiume Piave, si possono incontrare Silvio Fauner e Pietro Piller Cottrer. Forni Avoltri ospita un centro specializzato per la pratica del Biathlon: la Carnia Arena di Piani di Luzza unisce la pratica dello sci di fondo al tiro a segno con la carabina.

Nel Tarvisiano, terra della fuoriclasse olimpica Gabriella Paruzzi, l’Arena Paruzzi si estende sulla soleggiata piana del Priesnig offrendo 10 chilometri di percorsi omologati FISI; mentre nella vicina Valbruna, in Val Saisera, regina indiscussa del fondo in Valcanale, ci sono i tracciati della “Bassa Saisera” (7,5km) e “Alta Saisera” (7,5km/12 km).

One only needs to choose from the numerous itineraries of the valley floor, where there is no discernible drop, and the level of difficulty is at its lowest. A ciaspolata (i.e., snowshoe walk) surrounded by the pure-white silence of winter offers a unique outlook on various familiar landscapes and untouched corners of nature. Most itineraries overlap with summer hiking tracks: witness Saisera Wild Track, an 11km-long ring-shaped route at the foot of Jôf di Montasio and Jôf Fuârt, which offers a risk-free, beginner-friendly snowshoeing experience.

Expert snowshoe hikers may want to head towards Sauris, tiny mountain hamlet and winner of UN World Tourism Organisation’s “Best Tourism Village” 2022 award. Sauris’ snowshoe trail follows the ridge of Mount Ruke to Beinte’s stavoli (i.e., upland cowsheds, N/T): a three-hour walk to farmstead Agriturismo Monte Ruke. Here snowshoers can sit back, relax, and regain their strength with an invigorating dish from the farmstead’s mouthwatering menu, while enjoying the view

on Sauris’ lake. After exploring the fir and larch woods of Forni di Sopra, surrounded by the charm of Friulian Dolomites, snowshoers may even spot a chamois or a roe deer on the way to Tartoi’s and Tragonia’s farmsteads.

In the area of Piancavallo, in the municipality of Pordenone, the mountain side of Collalto is the perfect destination for snowshoers and relentless off-road cyclists on their snow-proof fatbikes. Another beautiful fatbike trail is the Puanina Tour in the area of Malborghetto-Valbruna: a themed itinerary leading to Alpe di Ugovizza, in the heart of Val Canale, where animal farming is still practiced according to tradition. Rural life here remains true to its roots and has hardly changed over the past century. “Puanina”, local term for alpine pasture, is still how Ugovizza’s citizens call “their mountain”, whose slopes echo of Slovenian and German folk songs.

Home to numerous Italian cross-country-skiing Olympic champions, this territory offers a whole network of ski-touring tracks and groomed trails: “Centro fondo Laghetti” in Paluzza (hometown of siblings Giorgio and Manuela Di Centa); Pista dei Campioni in Sappada (a 13-km-long trail through the woods that grow along the Piave river, where Silvio Fauner and Pietro Piller Cottrer usually train); and Carnia Arena of Piani di Luzza: a specialised biathlon training centre in Forni Avoltri, with groomed trails and a carbine target-shooting gallery.

Museo Storico Antiquarium History Museum Antiquarium Il Museo Storico Antiquarium di Camporosso è un piccolo scrigno, dove compiere un viaggio nel tempo, fino all’epoca romana. I reperti esposti, are, sculture, iscrizioni marmoree, testimoniano l’origine antica della funzione doganale del luogo e rivelano la presenza di un mitreo e la diffusione del culto misterico legato al dio Mitra, presso il personale addetto alla dogana; i servitori dello stato associavano sovente gli aspetti cosmici e astrali con i valori loro vicini, quali disciplina e solidarietà di gruppo.

È questo l’obiettivo del “Sentiero delle tradizioni” che verrà inaugurato nel paese di Camporosso a fine dicembre.

L’iniziativa, organizzata dall’associazione “abe”, dal Consorzio Vicinia e da “L’era dell’acquario”, fa parte del progetto “Tarvisio e dintorni”, promosso dal Comune di Tarvisio e finanziato dalla Regione FVG, con l’obiettivo di valorizzare la comunità germanofona della Val Canale e Canal del Ferro per tutto il corso del 2024.

This joint initiative by “abe” association, Consorzio Vicinia, and “L’era dell’acquario” is part of a larger project named “Tarvisio e dintorni”, promoted by the municipality of Tarvisio and sponsored by Regione FVG, aimed at bringing the public closer to the Germanspeaking community of Val Canale and Canal del Ferro throughout 2024.

La fiaccolata più lunga delle Alpi Giulie The longest torchlight procession of the Julian Alps Una tradizione iniziata 50 anni fa, quando un gruppo di amici decide di scendere lungo la pista Di Prampero, vestiti con gli abiti della tradizione portando una fiaccola in mano.

Ora sono 250 gli sciatori che ogni primo gennaio, portano la luce beneaugurante dalla sommità del monte nella fiaccolata più lunga delle Alpi Giulie.

– A tradition dating back 50 years, when a group of friends decided to ski down the Di Prampero slope wearing local traditional outfits and carrying a torch in one hand. Today, on 1st January of every year, 250 skiers start at the mountain top and carry the light of hope downhill, in the longest torchlight procession of the Julian Alps.

La poesia di un territorio si nasconde anche in luoghi nascosti che, una volta scoperti, regalano emozioni che rimangono nel cuore.

Casa Oberrichter, edificio storico di Malborghetto ne è un esempio. Quando il paese diventa parte dell’Impero Austrungarico, è impiegata per quasi un secolo come Tribunale (Oberrichter): la cantina è la prigione, il salone l’aula per le udienze, mentre al piano nobile è conservata la cassaforte con le multe pagate. Elegante dimore privata, nell’Ottocento, agli inizi del secolo scorso, vive un momento di profonda decadenza fin quando la famiglia Nicolaucich la fa rifiorire. I suoi spazi oggi sono destinati in parte a laboratorio, ristorante e albergo diffuso. Ovunque si respira un’atmosfera di seducente accoglienza; un connubio di arte –la casa custodisce preziose collezioni di oltre 2000 giocattoli di legno, porcellane, cristalli antichi e opere di artigianato–, natura e storia.

Luogo ideale per vivere l’atmosfera invernale accanto ai camini scoppiettanti o alle stufe, ascoltando buona musica, sorseggiando una tisana o una cioccolata, assaggiando piatti fantasiosi, leggendo ai propri bimbi uno dei racconti illustrati in un clima surreale, quasi fiabesco.

Witness Casa Oberrichter, historic residence of Malborghetto: when this area became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the building became a high court of justice (the German term “Oberrichter” means “chief justice”, N/T). The great hall was where hearings took place, while the piano nobile still displays the ancient vault where collected sanctions were kept. The residence preserved its prestige throughout the 19th century but entered a phase of decline in the early 1900s.

Thanks to the efforts of the Nicolaucich family Casa Oberrichter saw its lustre restored and is now part of the town’s accommodation complex albergo diffuso, in addition to hosting an artistic workshop and a restaurant.

Every room emanates a cozy sense of hospitality − a mixture of history, nature, and art, with its valuable

display of over 2,000 wooden toys, antique crystals, and handmade artworks. Casa Oberrichter’s charm reaches its peak in winter, with its crackling fireplaces and its traditional wood stoves, where guests can listen to fine music while sipping herbal tea or hot chocolate, tasting creative recipes, or reading to their children from one of the illustrated books offered by the hotel, in a surreal, almost fairy-tale-like atmosphere.

CamporossoRacconta La passione per la lettura e per il territorio del Tarvisiano di due giornaliste, Ilaria Romanzin triestina ed Emily Menguzzato, che vive da anni a Trieste, ma è camporossiana d’origine, sono gli elementi cardine da cui nasce CamporossoRacconta.

Una serie di incontri, suddivisi in due appuntamenti, invernale ed estivo, con autori di livello nazionale e locale, che presentano, nel corso di conversazioni aperte, i propri lavori. Un’occasione per conoscere meglio, in un contesto particolare immerso nella natura delle Alpi Giulie, sia gli scrittori stessi sia le piccole curiosità e gli aneddoti che spesso si nascondono dietro la realizzazione di un libro.

Un fil rouge caratterizza la rassegna, il tema, diverso per ogni edizione e declinato secondo generi letterari diversi per incontrare le inclinazioni delle fasce di pubblico che, sia in estate sia nella stagione invernale, frequentano la zona.

Nel corso delle conversazioni elementi classici si coniugano a tante novità che, grazie alla pronta collaborazione dei partner locali, interessano molteplici aspetti del territorio.

Un’attenzione particolare è rivolta poi ai più giovani. A loro sono dedicati appuntamenti, letture, laboratori e… delle sorprese! Un piccolo rinfresco, durante il quale degustare vini e prodotti del territorio, accompagna gli incontri; non mancano poi i momenti musicali ad animare quella che vuole essere anche una festa. CamporossoRacconta è ospitato nella sede della

Vicinia. Associazione che affonda le proprie radici nella storia, nelle tradizioni, nelle peculiarità della zona dal 1871 quando, su patente di Maria Teresa d’Austria, gestiva, come oggi accade, il patrimonio di proprietà nella Foresta di Tarvisio, una delle più grandi d’Italia. Donata nel 1007 dall’Imperatore di Germania Enrico II il Santo al Vescovado di Bamberga, è stata sottoposta a stretti vincoli di salvaguardia e sfruttamento da parte delle popolazioni residenti.

Al piano inferiore della sede, realizzato nella ex latteria, restano ancora alcuni interessanti manufatti e le caldaie tuttora ben conservate, quale tangibile testimonianza del recente passato.

by Trieste. Two passionate readers, whose love for Tarvisio and its territory gave birth to the project CamporossoRacconta (i.e., Camporosso narrates).

A series of meetings divided into two sessions, a winterand summer one, involving prominent authors at local and national level, who will present their work to the public in the form of open-conversation events. A perfect chance to learn more about these writers, their books, and the fun facts and anecdotes connected to their creation, in the unique environment of the Julian Alps.

This series of events follows an overarching theme (one for every edition), whose

every facet is explored and interpreted through different literary genres to better fit the various audiences it addresses, either in summer or in winter.

CamporossoRacconta’s open conversations bring together classic elements and latest innovations involving multiple aspects of this territory, thanks to the cooperation of the festival’s local partners.

Young guests are particularly welcome to take part in dedicated activities, readings, workshops… and surprises!

Events usually include refreshments featuring local wines and products, as well as music to provide the right festive mood for the festival, which is first and foremost a celebration.

CamporossoRacconta’s venue is the seat of Vicinia farmers’ consortium – a historic institution and a shrine of local traditions since its foundation in 1871, when Empress Maria Theresa entrusted it with the management of Foresta di

Tarvisio, one of the largest forests in Italy, and its heritage.

The Forest was donated in 1007 by Holy Roman Emperor Henry II –also known as Saint Henry the Exuberant– to the newly established Archdiocese of Bamberg. Today, the safeguard of Foresta di Tarvisio is ensured by a set of heavy regulations in terms of land exploitation by the locals.

On the first floor of the Consortium building, once a dairy farm, the old boilers and ancient artifacts are vestiges of a not-so-distant past.

POST-IT Correre sul Carso in inverno tra le meraviglie del territorio: torna la Corsa della Bora

Running on the Karst in winter amidst the wonders of the area: the Bora Race is back

La città e il mare incontrano il Carso in un viaggio tra i sapori, la cultura e le bellezze naturali del territorio, che poco ha dell’evento podistico inteso come tale, ma diventa un modo attivo per fare turismo culturale ed enogastronomico.

Questo e altro è la Corsa della Bora, l’evento di punta del Trail Running invernale in Italia organizzato dall’Asd SentieroUno, in programma dal 2 al 6 gennaio 2024. Un’esaltante corsa transfrontaliera aperta a chiunque voglia provare l’ebbrezza della corsa in pieno inverno in un tracciato spettacolare, con continue variazioni di panorama e di fondo.

Sette gare che coinvolgeranno il Carso, il centro di Trieste e la vicina Slovenia, dalla passeggiata inclusiva per tutta la famiglia, in una discesa dolce da Prosecco a Duino, alla corsa Ipertrail in cinque

The city and the sea meet the Karst in a journey through the flavours, culture and natural beauty of the area, which has little to do with a running event as such, but becomes an active way of cultural and food and wine tourism. This and more is the Corsa della Bora, the flagship event of winter Trail Running in Italy organised by the Asd SentieroUno, scheduled from 2 to 6 January 2024.

An exhilarating cross-border race open to anyone who wants to experience the thrill of running in the middle of winter on a spectacular route, with constant changes in panorama and terrain.

Seven races involving the Karst, the centre of Trieste and neighbouring Slovenia, from the inclusive walk for the whole family, in a gentle descent from Prosecco to Duino, to the Ipertrail race in five 164-kilometre stages,

La gara “regina” parte dal Castello di Lubiana e arriva sulle falesie di Duino, in riva al mare passando dal Castello di Duino, in un percorso sulle tracce dei romani, dei mercanti e dei popoli che, dai porti di Trieste e Venezia, sceglievano questa via per raggiungere i paesi dell’Europa continentale.

Anche quest’anno non mancheranno la corsa notturna da 82k e la Beer Run, la goliardica Corsa della Birra in cui gli atleti potranno bere un bicchiere per ogni chilometro percorso. Novità del 2024: la Terran Trail, che unisce il centro di Trieste con le Vigne e le grotte del carso, terminando in riva al mare.

La Corsa della Bora coinvolge il territorio nel senso più ampio, in collaborazione con le comunelle, le comunità e le associazioni del carso.

from Ljubljana Castle to Duino The ‘queen’ race starts from Ljubljana Castle and finishes on the cliffs of Duino, along the seashore passing by Duino Castle, in a route following in the footsteps of the Romans, merchants and peoples who, from the ports of Trieste and Venice, chose this route to reach the countries of continental Europe.

Also this year there will be the 82k night run and the goliardic Beer Run, in which athletes will be allowed to drink a glass of beer for every kilometre run. New for 2024: the Terran Trail, which links the centre of Trieste with the Vineyards and caves of the Karst, with finishline along the coast. The Race of the Bora involves the territory in the broadest sense, in cooperation with the municipalities, communities and associations of the Karst.
