Summer 2013

Spice is the UK’s leading adventure, social and leisure group. Enjoy a jam-packed social life with over 100 events every month to choose from. All events are arranged for you, all you have to do is book and turn up. Spice membership is equivalent to a glass of wine or a ‘designer’ coffee a week.

Be part of it and join today to make friends, meet people, have fun

welcome! Hello and welcome to our Summer Newsletter, and another batch of funky and fun events for you to get out there and have some fun, meeting people and expanding your horizons! As usual, the front and back coloured sections relate to the wider world of Spice Groups around the UK, with all the holidays listed at the back, and the black and white middle section relate to your local Spice Group. As ever, the Programme is already out of date by the time you get this, with new events being added every day online, so do keep checking your website to keep up to date – we’d hate you to miss that wonderful opportunity you have always promised yourself you will do! Our Front Cover features Dominic, our Thames Valley & Solent Co-ordinator, on the summit of North Americas Highest Mountain Denali at 6190M (20,300ft) just proving that Spice – We Are Here, gets everywhere! Congratulations to Dominic on an such amazing achievement! As you read this we should have just returned from our annual summer ‘conference’ (well that’s what Center Parcs treat us as). This year we have sold out early with over 500 attending, and that’s more than the past few years, so with reports around the regions that more events are selling out in quick time, we get the feeling things are on the ‘up’ out there. That means our Spice motto of “You Snooze – you lose, you rest - you rust” has never been truer! I think we are all fed up with doom and gloom and bad weather, so

now the summer sunshine is here, it’s a great time to take advantage of the warm and lighter nights, get out on some brilliant outdoor events. There are some real gems amongst the programme, so do take a good look and see what takes your fancy, from The Worlds Wackiest Races where you drive a bed and office desk, Llama and Wolf walks, Be a Spy Days, Ghost Walks and Blacksmith Days. We challenge you to blow those cobwebs away and do soothing unusal, funky, different - , after all, isn’t that why we all got together! Its also Summer Ball season, a great opportunity to get out your glad rags, DJs, and celebrate in style, so we hope to see you at one of those. Some good news is that our fee’s remain the same this year with no increase, as we have worked hard to keep to tight budgets and make savings where we can. We are always looking for members to feature on our member Profiles, so if you are up for sharing your story, please drop an email to me at dave@spiceuk.com and I will send you the link to our on line form. So have a great time on the events you choose, and remember to let us have your feedback – especially if you think we can do something better, we thrive on it and it is the backbone of Spice. Upcoming Events Butlins 70s Weekend When : Fri 11th October – Mon 14th October 2013 Where: Butlins Skegness, Lincolnshire Cost: £99pp

Dragon Boat Racing ..because nothing beats the atmosphere of when Spice race the dragon! Date: Sun 21 Jul 2013 where: Pershore, Worcestershire WR10 1AF Cost: £29 Member These are great days out - Enter the Dragon! Up to 16 people sitting side by side in a forty foot long boat, with a carved dragon’s head and tail attached. A drummer in the prow beating time, a helmsman in the stern keeping the boat on course with a giant paddle, the crew, 8 each side speeding the boat down the river to the finish line! The atmosphere is brilliant, which is why this is one of the essential events in the Spice calendar! Today we’ll be racing for fun with other Spice groups from all over the UK. We have our own trophies and medals to go for, and the races will be run on a timed basis over the day. Don’t worry if you’ve never been in a Dragon Boat or anything similar before, as we’ll have plenty of time to practice before the racing begins in earnest (and as this is Spice, it’s all just for fun anyway!).

A new National Spice Weekend especially for the party animals in Spice. Experience a weekend of great music from 10 live bands from the 70’s including The Three Degrees, Slade, Mud, Brotherhood of Man, Alvin Stardust, Jimmy James and the vagabonds, and tribute bands for Blondie, The Stylistics and T Rex! A three night 70’s music themed weekend for adults only (no kids!), a public event with over 5000 attending, so book early please as it usually sells out. For three nights, the headliners entertain in various venues around the resort, along with discos to the early hours. 70’s Fancy Dress is encouraged for the Saturday night, and you know how us Spicers love dressing up. During the day plenty of activities to keep you busy, including Splash waterworld. A walk on the ‘Skegness is so Bracing’ beach, flying kites and having a paddle! We stay in comfortable silver self catering apartments. Plenty of places to eat on the resort, and/or you can self cater using thje Spa supermarket on site. We have 100 beds reserved, as usually first come first served. Please book via your local Spice Group.

For colour, spectacle and excitement Dragon Boat Racing has it all and is also rapidly becoming the mass participation sport on water. If you want to know what a great day out this is ask any of the members who’ve attended previous events. Dragon Boat Racing caters for all ages, male and female, in one crew and requires no experience. It’s great fun and totally unlike any other kind of canoeing with team work being the key, not strength. Get the start right and you can feel the boat lift out of the water and start to plane to give you a fast racing start, it’s amazing how fast a 16 person canoe can travel! Each boat is provided with an expert helmsman to keep you on the right track, and with the help of your drummer beating out the time of the strokes you are sure to get the rhythm right...well that’s the theory anyway! The venue for this year’s event is the river Avon at Pershore, on the northern edge of the Cotswolds. This is a beautiful setting in one ofEnglands’ most picturesque areas so you may want to make a weekend of it. Changing facilities are available and there will also be food for sale during the day.

No Spicer should miss a Dragon Boat Day. It really sums up what Spice is all about – fun, friendship, excitement & the chance to try an activity that anyone can enjoy!

CO-ORDINATORS Corner Hello and Welcome Welcome to the Yorkshire newsletter and a special warm welcome to all including the many new members who’ve joined us in the last three months or so. As this edition goes to press we will all be partying hard at Center Parcs, one of Spice’s biggest gatherings of the year and no sooner do we return as we have our Yorkshire Summer ball on the 6 th July which will be yet another great excuse to let our hair down for a night of partying, laughing and fun - so don’t miss it. Listening to what members like and experience is the priority for me on their events and at the Spice fun factory we are always hard at work. There’s now a regular salsa class in York and Wetherby to try, a fun ladies dance workshop run by our very own professional dance instructor Sheena and we have a variety of different social meals and evenings out across the whole region as well as new regular Saturday meals in and around Sheffield. Summer Events …...but back to the summer and exciting outdoorsy stuff, it’s all too easy to just get into a habit of attending a regular event, but look at what you will be missing! Put away your pipe and slippers and check this out. We have the Outdoor theatre, Royal opera, evening rambles, day rambles, water sports (cable waterski, kayaking, windsurfing, surfing, paddle boarding, Thundercats), Nordic walking, Rounders, Cricket, Flamingo Land, Horse Riding, Target Archery, Narrowboat Day, Canal tunnel trip, Whitby Regatta, Sculpture Park Tour, Batley treasure hunt, Bike rides (and Tandem weekend). I know I’m up for a good share of this so come and make the time and join me, which reminds me I must rebook that Spice Balloon flight! Remember to check our website regularly as the many events listed in this edition will quickly fly by and we do add items frequently as well as update existing events as changes as they happen. New Coordinators Lastly I’m pleased to introduce our latest Leeds dedicated coordinator the lovely Dawn Cavendish who will be coordinating her first event on 28th June, and presently Julia Frater who’s currently looking after Ripon, and helping out around the Northerly regions including Harrogate and York. See you soon, Neal, Jonathan and the team.

A free social evening open to all existing, old, new and prospective Spice members We now have a pub social evening monthly in Sheffield, Leeds and York with a good turn-out of members and non-members. This evening is a social for any members or would be Spice members in the surrounding area. Why not come along and join us? It’s a relaxed social evening where you can meet up with members and gives us a chance to catch up with some friends you’ve met on events and also some new members. Have a chat over a drink, a general chin wag and discuss which other events to go on or you’ve been on, swap photos or even arrange transport to an event. The evening is open to anyone. These are popular evenings and usually very well attended and so it is definitely worth coming along! For this evening we are also running a preview night so if you are new to Spice then why not come along and meet our Spice Co-ordinator Neal who will be there to welcome you and give a short talk on the basics of Spice and how the it works. Neal will be wearing a blue T-Shirt with the Spice logo on it. If you decide to join the Club on the night there will be application forms available and normally some sort of special offer on either membership or events. You are more than welcome to stay for the rest of the evening where you will soon be chatting to some of the regular Club Members. It’s all very friendly and relaxed, and you’re welcome to simply turn up on the night. The Spice Co-ordinator will be there between 7.45pm and 9.30pm so you need to try and arrive between these times. Why not bring a friend or two?

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Wednesday 24th July 2013at 7:30pm The Royal Oak, 18 Goodramgate, York(YO1 7LG) The function room upstairs in The Royal Oak £7.50 Member, £8.50 Guest Julia Frater on 07772 616530

Have you ever fancied having a go at singing, but have never got round to joining a group? Have the recent choir/singing programmes on television inspired you to give it a go? Then why not come along to the 'Singing for Fun workshop? It will be a great way of learning basic singing techniques and experiencing singing as part of a group. We will have a look at a variety of different styles of song. You do not need to be able to read music- the only requirement is enthusiasm! The two-hour workshop will be led by Liz Linfoot. After studying music in Liverpool, Liz taught in two secondary schools as Head of Music and became director of the Liverpool Philharmonic training choirs for a number of years. Since returning to York, she spent a year in the role of Head of Music before deciding to focus on Choral Education. Liz now teaches part-time at Queen Ethelburgas College, has worked with the York Minster/Minster School's choral outreach programme and currently directs two adult community choirs: the Boroughbridge Community Choir and the Skelldale Singers.

Our most popular and famous workshop on this fun (and very useful!) skill of flirting. Kate, who runs a number of workshops for us with an emphasis on humour (so you know this one is going to be great fun!), has put together this day exclusively for Spice and has had great reviews from members all over the UK. So what is Flirting? ... well... Flirting isn’t just about pulling or getting lucky, it’s a lot more than that. Flirting is a way of interacting with people that makes it fun and easy to connect and makes them want to be with YOU. Yes, you can flirt to find a mate (or keep the one you’ve got) but you can also flirt to get a seat in a restaurant, jump a queue, bargain down a price, get that sale, or just to make someone feel good. Over 65% of us find communicating with new people in social or business situations difficult. Flirting can make it easier. Remember that we only have room for a sample of our events in the newsletter. Our website at www.spiceyorks.com/events has the full list of nearly 400 as we go to print.

Sunday 28th July 2013 from 1pm to 3pm 3 Edgedale Road, Sheffield (S7 2BQ) £20 Member, £24 Guest Sheena Brabazon on 07966 737215

Give me an "F", give me a "U", give me an "N"! and grab a couple of ludicrously oversized pom-poms (provided in class) to join Sheena for this Cheerleading workshop! You don't have to be able to form a pyramid, cartwheel, or do the splits to still look brilliant (but she'll give you the opportunity to do them if you like). Two left feet, lots of enthusiasm, and a dazed look will do just fine! So form a disorderly queue and shake those pom-poms!

Beginners Kayaking Paddle around Pugneys

Date: Sunday 28th July from 1:45pm to 3:30pm Place: Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (WF2 7EQ) Cost: £21 Member, £23 Guest What is a canoe? So what is a Kayak then? If these questions give an indication of your ability in this type of craft then this is the event for you. To me the big difference seems to be – If you tip over in a canoe (like the red Indians use) you fall out! If you tip over in a kayak you do an Eskimo roll and pop back up again (if you are very good, most normal people still fall out!) This is not part of the plan for our absolute beginners intro session to kayaks. The idea of this one and a half hour session is to encourage anyone who has never been in one of these “fun boats” to come along and have a go. The group will be limited to 8 people so that the instructor (in a kayak) can let you do as much or as little as you individually want on the day. We have chosen Pugneys with its flat water, to make your introduction to kayaking as trouble free as possible. You will not even be asked to capsize (the bit everyone always seems to remember!). You will require a change of clothing (the water runs down the paddle and up your sleeves!), a windproof top, old cagoule or the like and a pair of old trainers and towel. Showers are available on site. Please ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home.

Dinghy Sailing Intro Come and try your hand at sailing

Date: Sunday 18th August 2013 from 2:15pm to 4pm Place: Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (WF2 7EQ) Cost: £29.50 Member, £32.50 Guest If you’ve never tried sailing, here’s your chance. This session is aimed at total beginners and offers a chance for even the most dedicated landlubber to enjoy the exhilaration and satisfaction of utilising the natural power of the elements to propel yourself across water. Our one and a half hour session will commence with a short safety talk, and a general not-too-technical overview of dingy sailing. The ‘chat’ will be kept to an absolute minimum; the emphasis will be on getting 6

out there and having a go. Forget all those horror stories about having to jump out and capsizing the boat, this is a fun session not a frightener! It really is close supervision; the instructor will be in the boat with three students. Come on and give it a try! Please bring a change of clothing (just in case) and a waterproof jacket, footwear should be pumps or light trainers that you do not mind getting wet. Please ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home. Remember that this event is wind dependent!

Windsurfing Intro Come and try your hand at windsurfing

Date: Saturday 3rd Aug 2013 from 1:45pm to 3:30pm Place: Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (WF2 7EQ) Cost: £25 Member, £27.50 Guest Extras: Includes wetsuit - please state size when booking. This fantastic value for money session on the water will transform your next holiday in the sun. No need to fry on the beach when you can glide in the bay! No need for previous experience, as full instruction will be given. Feel the wind in your sails as you glide across the water using only the power of nature and in absolute silence! Please bring with you: shampoo, shower gel, towel etc, swimming clothes to go under wetsuit, old plimsolls or trainers to wear on feet. All other equipment and wetsuit is provided, please state your size when booking. Ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home. Remember that this event is wind dependent!

Beginners Paddleboard Lesson Catch some waves dude!!

Date: Place: Meet: Time: Cost: Host:

Saturday 20th July 2013 Scarborough # (YO11 2HD) Spa Complex 1pm to 3:30pm £42 Member, £46 Guest Steve Crawford on 07891 094976

Today we are guest of Fluid Concept. Fluid Concept Surfboards has been around since 1998. They began as 2 shapers designing & creating boards out of a pure love of surfing, and have evolved the business into what exists today adding the website, then the surf shop and with that came the surf hire & also BSA registered surf lessons. This lesson is aimed at first timers. In case you hadn't heard stand up paddleboarding is the latest (and one of the oldest) things to hit surfing. Essentially it's a long extra buoyant board which you stand on using a paddle to propel it. Great fun and fantastic for flat days and catching waves super far out past all the paddleless fools. We'll teach you basic water and beach safety, how to carry and use your board safely, paddling your board and catching a wave, and a good warm up routine. The lessons we offer at the surf school are all 2 hours long but we ask you to arrive about 30 minutes before your lesson starts so you have time to change and pick up your equipment. After the lesson we set aside some time for a chat and feedback or on any surf related subject you like. We have changing facilities at the shop and a nice hot kettle for the essential post surf cuppa. Lessons are 2 hours long so a good degree of fitness is required and confidence in the water is essential.

Spice Rambles All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers (not jeans). Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time. Please bring a packed lunch on day walks. Full details are on our website at www.spiceyorks.com/membersinfo/ramblesinfo All our rambles are graded as below. 1: Strenuous 2: Hard 3: Moderate 4: Easy 5: Easy peasy! Day rambles initially priced at £5 will increase in price to £8 for bookings received within one week of the event so please book early!
