SPRING 2015

Hi there and welcome to your Spring Newsletter. Where does time go? It only seems just last week that we were welcoming in the New Year and bracing ourselves for the winter weather to come. Now Spring is here (hopefully) and our thoughts turn to sunny days, longer evenings and all those lovely Spice events we can join in with! Have you made your plans for weekends away or a holiday with Spice friends?

500 members travelled with us this Ski season and the coming pages have you’ll find interesting articles including a look back at the ski season which after a pretty difficult start due to an absence of snow has turned into another great season. And as always you will find a selection of next year’s trips available to book both from Spice UK and your local group trips! This edition should be with you by 1st April so did anyone fall for our April Fools events and actually book? Over the years the Spice groups have invented some wonderful events to entice members to book and this year’s no

featured but there a sample of some of the other national weekends too – Dragon Boating, Edinburgh Festival, Murder Mystery, Sailing, etc. There are also many, many more weekends available around to country (to many to list here) so never be without something to look forwards to! Whatever your interests the Spice programme keeps delivering and I hope to see as many of you are possible in June at Center Parcs. So get booking and give yourself something’s to look forward to over the next few months.

different…so, did you fall for it?

Until next time what are you waiting for…Live your Dream.

Another big set of events for us are the weekend breaks and not only is our national Center Parcs weekend in Sherwood

Name: Tanya Froggatt Group: Manchester How long have you been a Spice member? 9 years Why did you join Spice? Needed to find myself again – I was lost. What has been your favourite event? Center Parcs Sherwood Forest – think it’s my favourite event what I can remember much about it but hey ho I keep returning every year so that’s positive. What has been your most challenging event? Not one specific event but the fact that I can do events by myself – even now after 9 years I still get butterflies in the pit of my stomach when going somewhere I haven’t been before.

Name: Jennifer Thomson Group: Scotland How long have you been a Spice member? 1 year. Why did you join Spice? I wanted to see more of Scotland and meet new people in the process. I have achieved my goals with weekend breaks, walks and visits to many places of interest. Most importantly, I have had many laughs and enjoyed myself at every event.

What is your funniest memory in Spice? After a difficult period in my life I went on a ghost walk round Manchester with Spice – my sides ached with laughing – yes it was a ghost walk honest. Don’t need a tonic when Spice offer these kind of events!

What has been your favourite event? It’s hard to pick one so my favourite is a canal boat trip in Linlithgow.

What would be your advice for a new member? Life is for living, live it.

I loved driving the boat and being captain of the ship.

Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Not telling – it’s too embarrassing!

What has been your most challenging event? The Ukulele Workshop was fun but my playing will test the patience of a saint!

What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Don’t put off what you can do today until tomorrow. I know it’s a cliché but I have never looked backed over my 9 years with Spice and regretted anything that I have done. Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Sean Connery cos he’s got the sexiest voice alive; Roger Moore because Bond, James Bond, 007 licence to kill – gets me every time; Johnny Depp but would have to be in his Jack Sparrow costume – fantasy of mine and finally Elvis Presley – could never understand why women could swoon over a man until I saw him. Your favourite movie? Jason and the Argonauts – even name my son after it (and it wasn’t Argonaut haha). Most treasured belonging? Health!

I went on the event twice.

What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Fortune favours the bold. Your favourite movie? The Quiet Man Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Tom Weir (from Weirs Way) and Adam Smith (Scottish Economist) Most treasured belonging? A photograph of my Gran at a wedding. She looked beautiful.

Name: Abigail Newit Group: West Midlands How long have you been on the Spice staff? Just over a year Why did you join Spice? I joined because after university all my friends disappeared all over the country and I found it difficult having a social life while working shifts. What has been your favourite event? By far the shootout in a soft play area, fantastic event and always brilliant atmosphere. What has been your most challenging event? My first event! Walking through that door and saying hello to people for the first time. What is your funniest memory in Spice? Every Spice party! What would be your advice for a new member? If your nervous speak to the office. The staff can help you pick a good first event and introduce you to some other members. Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Oscar Wilde, Heath Ledger, Walt Disney and Marilyn Monroe

Summer Center Parcs Racing the Dragon! One of the highlights of the Spice programme of National Events is our annual Dragon Boat Weekend hosted by Spice West Midlands in the market town of Pershore in Worcestershire. Perhaps this is always so popular because it contains all the necessary Spice ingredients of fun, friendship and friendly competition.

to work together as part of the team you are put with, keeping time with your drummer. This makes for some surprising successes. It’s a great leveller!

We hope you’ll take part, but don’t worry if racing boats really isn’t your thing. Our unmissable summer Center Parcs Weekend is now a Spice institution - a brilliant weekend break with TWO great exclusive parties and as much sport or relaxation as you can cope with! Special this year is a Sunday Spice Triple Challenge event, adding a brilliant fun event into the weekend which will be another highlight....The Saturday has free Dance Classes– great for mixing and meeting people –this year we are running with 2 sessions each learning the dance steps of a different dance ready for your group ‘performance’ at the Disco in the evening. On Sunday we have a very special optional event with our own Spice Triple Challenge – starting at 12.00am at The Venue. This is a fun mix from Treasure Hunt, Photo Challenge and Scavenger Hunt with a couple of twists. Teams of five. We will put teams together if you don’t have 5.

All the events mentioned on in these pages are available to book on your local sites

Sailing Weekends

National Murder Mystery Weekend

Masham Beer & BBQ Weekend A strong favourite with the Northern Groups (and a few hardened Southern travellers) with around 60 members camping just outside the lovely village of Masham. Again cooked breakfasts on both days, a fabulous BBQ cooked by the hardworking Spice Yorkshire team and a Spice exclusive tour of the wonderful Theakston Brewery with a free beer bar where you can pull your own pints and the favourite beer is usually ‘Old Peculiar’

Walking Weekends Our walking weekends are a big feature of the Spice offerings and many of these are run for us by the boys at Walkwise who have been working alongside Spice for almost 20 years. These fabulously sociable weekends are a mainstay of our calendar and take place all over the UK. Dependent on numbers there can be up to a choice of 3 different walks per day to choose from suiting the more sedate walkers through to those looking for a real challenge.

Our murder mystery weekends are a Spice classic. It’s your chance to become Hercule Poirot or Agatha Christie, can you solve the clues with your team and find out who dunnit! Everyone has a role to play and you may dress up to get into character. Our theme this year is “A Spa Day… To Die For”. A grizzly murder has been committed at a new spa hotel, one of you is the murderer and with your team you need to follow the clues and name the culprit, in true Poirot fashion.

Bunkbarn Weekends Our Bunkbarn weekends are renowned for their value for money and of course the sociable aspect. The general format is 2 nights in hostel type accommodation with cooked breakfasts and sometimes an evening meal and often come with a guided walk/ ramble each day. They are great fun with everyone mucking in to help clean up after breakfasts or even cooking sausages or bacon for 30 to 50 people! Traditionally these weekends have taken place in and around the Yorkshire Dales & the Lakes but look out in 2015 for more further South including Bury, Littlehampton, Milton Keynes and South Wales.

EnCompass Sailing have been providing sailing events for Spice members for the past 12 years. We have introduced over 1200 Spice members to sailing many of whom return year after year. Some have also caught the bug sufficiently to become boat owners, or to sail the oceans in some of the more challenging races such as the Clipper. Our aim on every weekend is for our crew to have amazing weekends whatever their level of experience. Details are available on website and you can also sail the Inner Hebrides out of Oban - there’s nothing like a night moored at Tobermory.

Edinburgh Festival For one month each year the city of Edinburgh plays host to one of the biggest arts events in the world - The Edinburgh Festivals. When seeking the best experience there’s nothing like local knowledge to guide you through the tricky process of selecting the best things to do. Spice Scotland organise an August Bank Holiday break like no other - over the weekend you have the opportunity to attend many shows and extras including the Military Tattoo, Walk Arthurs Seat, Picnic in Princes St. Gardens, Dance at a real Scottish Ceilidh, enjoy fine dining and see some of the best shows the Fringe Festival has to offer. Over the 12 years Spice Scotland have been running these trips over 1300 members have come along - many come back too, time and time again - it’s an experience like no other.

Coordinator’s Corner Welcome to our Spring 2015 newsletter which gives you an overview of the Spice events coming up in the next few months and as always, full information is on the website and we always recommend checking out the web write ups to get the full picture. The Spice office’s favourite time of the year is fast approaching, with the nights getting lighter and the weather seeming to be full of promise of balmy summer nights & days ahead (well we only hope so). And of course with the better weather our sights turn to lots more outdoor activities with water-skiing, dragon boating, sailing, kayak paddling, windsurfing, foot golf, camping, evening rambles, outdoor theatre, music festivals and much more to whet our appetites. The approaching Summer months also brings our annual Summer Ball which is at the Met in Leeds this year and takes place on Yorkshire Day! Save Saturday 1st August in your diary – we’d love to see you there. Please book before 1st June for the special early bird price. We have recently added several National summer events to the events listing namely the fabulous Center Parcs weekend, the brilliant Dragon Boat Racing Weekend and the tantalising Murder Mystery Weekend and bookings are coming in fast. Our theme for Center Parcs this year (which was unanimously voted in by Spice facebookers) is ‘The Letter P’ which gives you great scope. We also have one of our Spice signature events coming up early in April - Fire-eating and Fire-breathing. Over 2000 Spicers have learnt this skill over the years proving it is amazing what a knowledgeable instructor and a bit of mind over matter can do! April and May are also our most prolific months for Bank Holidays too with no less than three bank holiday weekends – we have plenty of weekends away if you feel like getting away from it all but you need to be quick if you want to book something for Easter as they are filling fast. You can quickly take a look at all our forthcoming weekend breaks by going to the events page on the website and selecting Weekend Breaks on the drop down list of categories. Our almost complete listing of the popular bunk barn weekends is now available to book online including the popular Robin Hoods Bay & Beverley Friary offerings and of course we have our annual Masham Beer & BBQ weekend coming up too which is already two-thirds full - don’t miss out!

Lauren

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. We know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 13 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time we are on an event, come up and say hello so we can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

York

Dates: Tuesday 12th May Tuesday 14th July Place: Brooklyn Bar, 50 Call Lane, Leeds (LS1 6DT)

Dates: Tuesday 14th April Tuesday 2nd June Place: The Old Queens Head, 40 Pond Hill, Sheffield (S1 2BG)

Dates: Tuesday 28th April Tuesday 28th July Place: The Royal Oak, 18 Goodramgate, York (YO1 7LG)

Brooklyn Bar is on Call Lane, between the entrance to Queens Court and the railway bridge. Disabled access is through the side entrance from Queens Court. The nearest outdoor parking is opposite the Adelphi pub unless you get very lucky and get a space just outside the venue. Indoor car parking is along behind Chaophraya or upstairs from Bibis Italian. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs and then join us upstairs?

The Old Queens Head is right alongside Sheffield Bus station and adjacent to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Pond Hill. The nearest tram stop is Fitzalan Square / Ponds Forge just a 5 minute walk away. The railway station is a 10 minute walk. There is some street parking on Pond Hill and more on Pond Street, or you can use the car park at Ponds Forge or the Castle Gate Q Park next to the Travelodge. We meet in the area to the right as you enter through the main door from Pond Hill.

The Royal Oak is at the Monk Bar end of Goodramgate. There is no parking along Goodramgate so use one of the car parks just outside of the walled shopping centre. We meet in the upstairs function room which is through the inner door and then up the stairs on your right. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?

For all locations we meet from 7:45pm. Please try to be there by 8pm for the talk.

Can’t make it? Don’t worry … Don’t worry if you can’t make it to any of our preview nights – it’s not essential! You can always find out more about Spice on our website at www.spiceyorks.com. Rambles - Grading System

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibility is to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on SatNav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time.

Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! http://www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

Spice coordinator on hand throughout Extras: Bring: a full size bottle of white spirit or turps substitute; a large old towel, a bottle of full fat milk (or flavoured milk), headbands if you have long hair & a camera to record our achievements! This has got to be one of the Spice Classic Events. Go on, It Must Be On Your List of "Got to do's". If you are not sure about doing it then ask around and find out what a great day it is! Over 2000 Spice members have faced the challenge and swallowed fire - and the feedback forms tell us it's crazy - thrilling - adrenaline pumping and more - fire eating is one of our Classic Events that sets Spice and its members far above the mundane and gives you the chance to leave mediocrity behind and become extra-ordinary. The morning session comprises a thorough programme of games and exercises done as a group, designed to boost confidence and team spirit and to prepare members for the challenge of safely learning this dangerous and esoteric skill. It's lots of fun but never the less taken seriously as danger is ever present, so no messing about on this one. The day culminates in the incredible sight of all the team swallowing firebrands and for the grand finale - a team photo of everyone flame throwing! Are we mad - not when you know how!

The lovely people at Sale Water Ski Club which is a member’s only group have very kindly offered to give a limited number of Spicer’s the opportunity to try out water skiing. The two hour session will give you some dry land training before seeing you join club members on the boat where you will all be given a chance on the training bar by the side of the boat. This means that the ski instructors on the boat can give you help to hopefully get you up on the skis! For those of you have already have some experience of water skiing or those that show they have the capability, there is the opportunity to ski behind the boat. In between Spicer’s giving it a go you will also get the opportunity to watch SWS club members showing you how it should be done so you can pick up tips from them too. The price includes the hire of the wetsuits from Trafford Water Sports Centre, your tow of 8 minutes and a spice admin fee – the club are giving their time for free to try to attract new people to the sport.

Bridge Abseil and Ladder Climb ..it'll scare you to death - but you'll love it!!

Ever fancied the idea of a freefall abseil (like the SAS do out of a helicopter!) from a precipitous 80' viaduct to the river bank below…and then climbing back up using a metal caving ladder which swings and sways! (saves having to walk all the way back to the top anyway). We thought you might, so we arranged a great day for you. Once you've plucked up the courage to do it once, there will be no stopping you. It's a great confidence booster and gives a real sense of achievement. This day is run by Mark Fenton (who many have written in praising and requesting more of) so you can be sure that there will be lots of fun, a relaxed atmosphere where absolute beginners will find lots of nurturing and encouragement and a total commitment to your safety at all stages. This is a brilliant first or second abseil experience. It is also an ideal training for anyone wishing to do our more advanced caving trips as you will be able to learn some of the techniques above ground rather than under!

Come and join us for Sunday lunch at Sheffield's premier gastropub. Today's lunch is two courses - main and pudding.

Emmerdale Beginners Bike Ride

Date: Saturday 9th May 2015 at 10:30am Place: Parsley Hay, Derbyshire# (SK17 0DG) Meet: P&D car park at High Peak Trail Parsley Cost: £16 Member, £18 Guest Grade: 4; Distance: Approx. 12 miles.

Date: Sunday 10th May 2015 from 9:30am to 3:30pm Place: Saltaire Brewery, Shipley # (BD17 7BA) Cost: £19 Member, £21 Guest, £37 Member + Bike, £39 Guest + Bike Host: Iain Johnson of Cycle Yorkshire on 07958 130712

The High Peak Trail has been superbly converted from a railway line into a cycling/walking track and passes through some spectacular Peakland scenery. The route is totally flat from our starting point at Parsley Hay (nr Buxton) for approx 10 miles then there is a slight descent as the old railway line heads down towards Middleton Top which is approx 12 miles from the start point; here there is a great picnic spot plus small visitor/centre shop (where you can get coffee/tea etc) and toilets. As we head back towards Parsley Hay in the same direction we have to ascend the incline we came down earlier and then it’s flat all the way back to the finish. If you do the whole route therefore it’s a very easy 24 miles; if you don’t fancy the whole route you can choose to stop along the way and enjoy the views/eat your lunch and wait for the rest of the group to come back. Any questions give Jez a ring on 07974967209.

Abseiling for the Terrified Dates: Sunday 10th May 2015 Saturday 20th June 2015 Sunday 12th July 2015 Place: Black Rocks, Matlock # Time: 10am Cost: £29 Member, £32 Guest After seeing Mark Fenton's ability to gently coax even the most frightened, or physically disadvantaged people into achieving brilliant outdoor feats, I started these special sessions which have proved extremely popular! You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all. Mark will get you to overcome any fears by building up your confidence gradually. First we get used to the equipment and how to use it on a few very short descents, before tackling some bigger abseils if you feel able. You’ll not be forced to do anything you are uncomfortable with, or feel stupid if you back out of any stage. So go on…you’ve nothing to lose but your fears! 26

Ramble, Scramble and Dangle!! ..a great day out with Mark

Date: Place: Cost: Host:

Saturday 6th June 2015 at 10am White Peak area of Derbyshire # (DE4 5AA) £29 Member, £35 Guest Mark Fenton for Spice West Midlands

We get the most brilliant feedback from these days out with Mark Fenton! So why not go along and find out what they’re getting up to in the Peak Park? Meeting in the White Peak, we embark on a 7 mile hike but along the way we encounter and overcome (hopefully!) various obstacles! It could be a climb, a river crossing, an abseil or it could be all three. You might be asked to disarm a bomb, climb a tree or ascend a steep embankment using jumars (fixed rope ascenders) you could even be asked to find your own way back to the cars using “Mark’s special maps”.

There’s more online We always have more events than we can fit into the newsletter and we are adding to the list all the time. For the most up to date event list and current availability, check our website at www.spiceyorks.com.

Pie Meal at The Hop Date: Saturday 6th June 2015 at 7:15pm Place: Dark Neville Street, Granary Wharf, Leeds (LS1 4BR) Cost: £6 Member, £8 Guest Includes: Your choice of pie, mash potato, peas or baked beans and gravy The Pie Hole at The Hop serves only the best quality and finest tasting pies around. All pies are served with a dollop of mash potato, boozy beer infused peas or baked beans and gravy.

Another of Mark's brilliant events that are aimed at those who really want to conquer a challenging outdoor pursuit, but feel the need for some extra 'loving care' and patience to help them meet their ambition. This day is an ideal introduction in an interesting cave system, but one where you have the peace of mind of knowing that you could quickly be brought to the surface if the experience proves too much! So if you've always been a bit wary of taking your first trip underground then this is the event for you. Grade: Easy

The group will be limited to 8 people so that the instructor (in a kayak) can let you do as much or as little as you individually want on the day. We have chosen Pugneys with its flat water, to make your introduction to kayaking as trouble free as possible. You will not even be asked to capsize (the bit everyone always seems to remember!). You will require a change of clothing (the water runs down the paddle and up your sleeves!), a windproof top, old cagoule or the like and a pair of old trainers and towel. Showers are available on site. Please ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home.

All other equipment and wetsuit is provided, please state your size when booking. Ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home. Remember that this event is wind dependent!

This event has had great feedback. We have booked 4 tanks, each of which take a crew of 3 Spice members who will be with their tank throughout (so no waiting around on this one!) We start with a practice session, where we put the tank through its paces on the 1 mile track and firing range. We will alternate the 3 positions in the tank so that each person gets a chance to drive, a chance to load the gun and a chance to fire. The gun is adapted to fire paintball ammunition, and can be fired with the hatch up or down. In battle, of course the hatch has to be down and aimed by periscope. After the practice, the four tanks will do battle, with each tank attempting to out manoeuvre and “knock out” the others with their huge, paintball firing guns. For this part, teams will not be able to switch positions, so you will need to decide between you or toss a coin to decide who will drive, who will load and who will fire.

The wall stretches 73 miles from coast to coast and was begun in AD122 under the command of Emperor Hadrian to mark the northern limit of the mighty Roman Empire. It may come as a surprise to some to know that it is not just a wall, there are numerous forts, mile castles, bridges, roads, towns, dwellings and temples. Today nearly 2000 years later, much of it still remains, so much so that it is now designated a World Heritage site. The best preserved sections of the wall lie between Lanercost Priory in the West and Chesters Cavalry Fort in the East and it is no coincidence that this also happens to encompass the wildest, most inaccessible and arguably the most beautiful landscape with dramatic ridges, open moors, long escarpments, lochs and deep river valleys. The bank holiday walking programme of 6 walks over the three days concentrates on the very finest sections of the wall and the surrounding area. Our hotel for the trip is the comfortable Gilsland Spa which with ensuite rooms, well stocked bar and hearty food is ideally located just a mile from the wall itself.

Your guide for these walks is Barry Smith, a qualified mountain leader who has been living in the area and walking these hills for over twenty five years. All the ridges involved are wide and far from scary so you can concentrate on the views rather than the drops. On Saturday, after a traditional cooked breakfast, we plan to tackle two of the highest peaks in Southern Snowdonia, Aran Fawddwy and its sister summit Aran Benllyn. We’ll be approaching the peaks from a little used route to the east which will take us by the impressive waterfall, Pystyll Gwyn. The walk is about 10 miles in length with spectacular views.

The Spice winter holidays always kick off with our Arctic Adventure trip in early December, and last year once again we took over a lovely Chalet in Levi, Arctic Finland and arrived to a stunning landscape of winter wonderland, with plenty of snow to play in. Although there is a hill with easy skiing, it is the array of other winter activities that make this trip different, including an optional night in a luxury igloo with a glass roof. The group were fortunate enough to have a glorious showing of the Northern Lights that night, and in fact they made three appearances this trip so we were really lucky. Add this to the other fun activities – snow shoeing, husky mushing, reindeer farm, snow tubing, gentle walks through the forest, the ice hotel and log fires (not log fires in the ice Hotel – nooooo that wouldn’t work…) - all this nicely lubed with plenty of ‘glogi’, and no wonder its already almost sold out for this year. Check current availability online.

So there it went – 504 skiers been and gone, and as another Ski season melts away (groan) and we have just our memories and pictures to look back on, and our thoughts will inevitably turn to next years offerings...

but when it did The snow for European ski resorts was late arriving, come – unfortunately it delivered a massive dump in 24 hours on the seasons busiest transfer day – the Christmas/New Year change over weekend, causing complete chaos on the roads and airports. With the French authorities declaring it a National Emergency, we had groups coming from and going out to the resorts, all delayed or stranded, put up in Church Halls and airport floors, while the chaos was sorted out over the following 24 hours. It was a once in a lifetime event, so my money is on it not happening next year – touch wood ice! So our Christmas and New Year skiers enjoyed and endured an unusual ski trip with a few challenges along the way – the main thing is that everyone was safe and we all lived to tell the tale for another season! Our Ski Solo Week (all single rooms) was next to go in early January, ) where this was our fastest selling week last year (be warned we took over the whole Chalet in Courmayur, and with great feedback again, we have rebooked for March 2016. We have tried to book more single rooms on all our trips for next season as the demand for singles is increasing, despite the hefty ‘single supplements’. The ever popular Ski Andorra in late January also had 42 Spicers on, and the easy skiing, great English speaking ski school and fun (tax free) nightlife always delivers – so we liked it that much this year, we are going twice next season – we have just confirmed Pas de la Casa in January, Soldeu in March. At the time of writing (end of Feb) we still have our March trips to go, so looking forward to hearing all your feedback and seeing all the photos. We have a very active Spice Facebook group for Skiers (Search on “Spice Ski UK Group”) which is a fun way to break the ice and keep in touch with your ski pals. And if you are thinking of joining us next year – watch out for those early booking discounts, and to secure the trip you want – most of the trips fill up and we end up with wait lists, so the early bird catches the chairlift, if you get my snow drift!

April is been a time when Spice groups take the opportunity to play up their members! The Spice “April Fool Event” has become a popular Spice tradition. So beware before booking a Spice event that looks at all suspicious if the date is April 1st! And it’s not only the members who get caught out by spoof events (and yes, the bookings do come in, however obvious the joke!). One of my favourites was a “Sewer Treasure Hunt” which promised “clues daubed on the walls”, “a finger buffet underground for which rubber gloves would be provided” and the necessity for “all your clothing to be incinerated on your return through the manhole”. Pretty obvious clues to a hoax you may think, yet they didn’t deter an irate manager from The Severn Trent Water Company calling Spice to threaten legal action if we insisted upon entering their sewage pipes!

Playing the Fool

Another year, the local paper called to ask if they could send a reporter and photographer to cover our “Siege Catapult” event where we were promising to fire Spice Members to a great height over Edgbaston Reservoir to almost certain death! Hilarious! A more recent caller was the General Secretary of British Naturism. They had picked up on our announcement that a Nudist Beach was being established on Birmingham’s newly renovated canal-side area. As you might expect from hardy British naturists, they didn’t see it as at all unusual that we were planning to swim naked through the locks and basins of Birmingham’s waterways, and parade in the buff amongst the commuters in the April sunshine! Other notable spoof events from the Spice archives include: Ejector Seat Testing; Thai Activities for Women; Human Crash Test Dummies; Rambling with Elephants; Image and Style Workshop for Pets; Roadkill Restaurant Experience; Surgery for Beginners and many more besides. Spice is all about fun. And we have no problem laughing at ourselves – particularly on that one day of the year!

Nudist Beach

It is 30 years since Brighton opened its nudist beach and it has been a great success for locals and tourists alike, so it is surprising that Edinburgh has taken quite so long to catch up! Granted, Portobello does not want the venture, so the Union Canal Society has gifted us with fabulous waterways that are ideal for swimming.

Spice Office Garden Party Clearance - who knows what we will uncover Extras: please bring boiler suits, heavy duty gloves and a face mask . Those that have been to our garden parties at Spice Towers know that there is a huge expanse of unused ground behind the property. What you may not know is why it is unused? For the last 40 years the land has been a local dumping ground for old tyres, empt y oil and chemical drums, in fact you name it and you will probably spot it down there. That coupled with the crum bling asbestos garages has made it a no go area – that is until now! Please Note: this event is not covered under our standard insurance policy.

Highlighted Holidays

GRANADA & THE FESTIVAL OF CROSSES 4 days, Friday 1 May 15 from £495 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester We ran this weekend for the first time this year and the feedback was so good we had to repeat it! Contrary to its title this is not a deeply religious based holiday; this weekeBnd takes place during “Las Cruces de Mayo”, Granada’s biggest street festival. During “Cruces” the streets of Granada are awash with elaborate flower-adorned crosses, celebrated with dancing, street food and Sangria into the early hours. Las Cruces de Mayo celebrates the triumph of life over death. Each square has amplified music for dancing and every corner of the town is filled with ‘alegría’ well into the small hours in true inimitable Andalucian style. Las Cruces de Mayo finale takes place every year on the 3rd May!

MARK WARNER 5* WATERSPORTS 8 days, Wed 10/Sat 13 June 2015 from £789 8 days, Wed 17/Sat 20 June 2014 from £789 15 days, Wed 10/Sat 13 June 2014 from £1195 Flights from London Heathrow & Manchester After superb feedback for the last 2 years we are delighted to revisit Mark Warners’ new Levante Beach Resort as our watersports destination for 2015. This 5* resort is located on one of the longest sandy beaches on the eastern coast of Rhodes, in the resort of Afandou, 20kms from Rhodes Town. Rhodes is an island steeped in history, dotted with picturesque little villages, heavenly scented pine and cypress forests and miles upon miles of golden sandy beaches.

TURKEY COAST CRUISE 8 days, Mon 15 June 2015 from £775 8 days, Mon 14 September 2015 from £775 Flights from London Gatwick & Manchester Sailing from Marmaris in the clear turquoise waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas you will discover the delights of the Turkish Coast. The Captain and crew expertly handle the traditional sailing gulet, East Meets West leaving you free to explore the secluded coves and bays. You’ll have no worries about cooking meals, sailing or dropping anchor.

Our host for the weekend is Gayle, a who lives in Granada so can give us the benefit of her local knowledge to help get the most from this great weekend.

VALENCIA & LA TOMATINA FESTIVAL 5 days, Mon 24 Aug 15 from £649 Departs London Gatwick, Liverpool & Edinburgh La Tomatina also known as The Tomato Festival! Most of us have of it but how about being part of it… Every year in the small Spanish town of Buñol the streets are taken over with this amazing spectacle and run red (literally) with rivers of tomato juice! But what’s it all about - La Tomatina is basically a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. However, since the 2013 event official ticketing was put into place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people and you could be one! Our trip to the festival is a little more civilised however and we have included 4 nights’ accommodation in the historic city of Valencia to make this a truly wonderful breakaway with a difference.

COSTA BLANCA CHILLOUT 8 days, Sun 20 September 2015 from £599 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol & Glasgow Repeated after great feedback last year! Spain’s Costa Blanca, located on the central Eastern coastline, is a popular destination for tourists who arrive every summer to take advantage of the warm climate, sun-drenched beaches, laid-back lifestyle and lively evening culture. Calpe’s two main beaches, the Cantal Roig and the Playa Arenal, are renowned for their long stretches of fine sand and clear waters, perfect for swimming and also popular with surfers. The port comes alive in the afternoon as the daily catch makes

its way inland and diners are invited to sample the fresh local seafood for dinner in one of the many restaurants surrounding the harbour.

CUBA – SUN & FUN 12 days, Thu 22 October 2015 from £1699 Departs London Gatwick direct Join us on a wonderful Caribbean break to the historic island of Cuba! Get away from it all this autumn and enjoy some fun in the Caribbean sun with Spice! This 11-night break to the Caribbean’s largest island, famed for its rum, salsa, vibrant culture and stunning beaches will be amazing. Spend a few days in the happening capital Havana and immerse yourself in decades of history intertwined with a hot salsa beat and plenty of rum cocktails before transferring to quieter Varadero for 7 nights’ All Inclusive relaxation on the beach.

LAKE GARDA AUTUMN SPEICAL 6 days, Sun 11 Oct 2015 from £499 Departs London Stansted & Manchester

INDIA: BOLLYWOOD, PALACES AND BEACHES 15 days, Tue 10 November 15 from £1999 Departs London Heathrow only This is a trip with a real difference and something we have never come across before! Taking in India’s must see Golden Triangle – Dehli, Agra and Jaipur – to see the Taj Mahal, Amber City Fort and Agra Fort amongst other things we then head down to Mumbai for our insight into the world famous Bollywood phenomenon! And finally it’s down the coast to Goa for a well-deserved chillout! This is a trip we are sure won’t be available for long so don’t hang around.

Repeated after huge success over the last few years! The sheer splendour of Italy’s largest lake is legendary. Charming waterside resorts and villages lie sheltered by a stunning backdrop of mountain scenery. Enjoying a mild climate, Lake Garda has a unique charm that has captivated visitors for centuries, offering something for everyone.

CAIRO & NILE CRUISE AT CHRISTMAS 9 days, Sat 19 December 15 from £1079 Departs London Heathrow only

ICELAND DISCOVERY 5 days, Sun 02 November 15 from £699 Departs Luton & Manchester RIceland truly is an amazing and unique destination and we would say it should be on everyone’s to do list at least once in their life! This 4 night break is designed to give a wonderful introduction to this stunning island and includes 2 excursions, a visit to the excellent Blue Lagoon plus enough free time for you to explore on your own. This amazing island near the Arctic Circle is still being dramatically crafted by nature – it’s a world of fire and ice that will enchant you like no other.

Egypt has an enthralling history and a wealth of well-preserved monuments and treasures. Cruising the Nile allows you to visit all the sites and attractions in a comfortable fashion: from the last remaining wonder of the ancient world, the Great Pyramids at Giza, to the vibrant Nubian culture at Aswan, we incorporate all the significant places of interest and what could be better than doing all this at Christmas!
