www.spiceuk.com Spice is the UK’s leading adventure, social and leisure group. Enjoy a jam-packed social life with over 100 events every month to choose from. All events are arranged for you, all you have to do is book and turn up. Spice membership is equivalent to a glass of wine or a ‘designer’ coffee a week.

Be part of it and join today to make friends, meet people, have fun

welcome! Welcome to our Spring newsletter, and a special big warm friendly welcome to each and every one of you especially the new members that have joined us in the last three months, we have had record recruitment quarter and we are going from strength to strength my best advice - just jump in the deep end and make the most of your Spice life! As we are growing we need to make some changes and this is my last ‘editorial’ as I am taking a little step back from the front line of Spice. I turn 60 this year and I always promised myself I would not want to lead the organisation as I get my Bus Pass and dementia looms  (lol), so am very happy to hand the reigns over to my colleague and friend, Ian Purvis, who moves up from Holiday Manager to General Manager and I become Chairman of Spice UK. Ian will take over this piece from the Summer issue and I will be involved from a much more strategic view so watch this space! We have another batch of wonderful events and opportunities to meet people, make friends and have fun with a ready made bunch of like minded people, who joined Spice for all the same reasons you did! If you are new to Spice, the front and back coloured sections relate to the wider world of Spice groups, while the black and white middle section from page 7 onwards relate to your local branch, and finally the back pages feature some of our many wonderful group holidays. However as ever we are adding new events to the Events Programme every day, so do keep looking at the website! We also keep you up to date with weekly email updates from your group coordinators which will feature the coming weeks events, so make sure you are receiving those.

This edition features two of our biggest events, Centre Parcs in June – acting as our National Weekend, packed with fun and games, sports, parties – including a ‘Carnival themed its a knockout on the Sunday, which will be more laughs than you can imagine. We also feature National Dragon Boat Racing another firm favourite with Spicers and Edinburgh Festival Weekend which has grown in numbers over the last few years. Please take a look on page 3. I believe our local programme is better than its ever been, with a rich array of diverse, unusual, funky and fun events, sitting alongside all the standard socials, like Badminton, Rambles, Theatre and Dining, so we do hope to see you on something very soon, be in Walking with Wolves or Dragon Boat Racing. There are some wonderful new holidays announced too – Cuba Sun and Fun , a fab two centre chill out, our Highlights of China makes its regular bi-annual appearance, and is a not to be missed travel adventure, our popular Lake Garda Chill-out (the one with the free bar!) and the first of our 2015 Ski Trips have started to appear, with more to follow. Still a couple of slots available on our awesome Grand Canyon Rafting Trip in September if you fancy an adventure that you will remember forever. So enjoy the Spring, take a good look at all the fun times ahead, get booking and I will still be attending events so I hope to see you on soon.

Why did you join Spice I found myself absent of friends and having zero social life for a very long time. Life is not a solo adventure so I thought I would give Spice a chance before doing something drastic and relocating to Canada or New Zealand for a fresh start. These plans are long since obsolete.

Why did you join Spice? I realised that my spare time consisted mostly of sitting at home watching telly and decided where’s the fun in that? A friend told me about Spice and I signed up straight away.

Why did you join Spice? I joined Spice when looking for a local book club. It turned out to be the best move I ever made. Book club is ace and I have had so many more adventures alongside making some amazing friends.

What has been your favourite event? Is it to cheesy to say all of them? It’s rare for me to not have a good time. If I had to give an answer I suppose it would have to be seeing the Reduced Shakespeare company, you know something is funny when you jaw still hurts days after from laughing so much.

What has been your favourite event? Archery as I got a bull’s-eye. Only one but at least I got that.

What has been your favourite event? My favourite event is Dragon Boat Racing. It is a great weekend out on the water after a party night.

What has been your most challenging event? I don’t tend to do challenging events but to say the least a recent ramble around Pendle Hill was quite a challenge given my relatively low level of fitness. I learnt something valuable that day, Rod lies! Do not believe him when he says it’s all downhill from here, it won’t be! What is your funniest memory in Spice? Not sure if it was the delirium of so little sleep but the entire Winter Centre Parcs weekend getaway was one big laugh. What would be your advice for a new member? Don’t worry! An impossible task I am aware but there is no need. It takes a special kind of crazy to be in Spice and it makes everyone friendly in what is an unfriendly world. Have you been on a spice holiday? I took what is quite a risk for me and went on the Winter Center Parcs, and did not regret it one bit. From being up till 5 in the morning at a relaxed not-an-after-party party, to chilling out during the day reading a good book or an oddly hilarious game of crazy golf while waiting for brunch on a Monday (my new Center Parcs tradition I think) the entire weekend was simply awesome-sauce. Already booked on the summer weekend and I think people are getting tired of me publicising it so much, but can you blame me! Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? I don’t know how embarrassing it Is, but I have certainly fallen onto my backside a couple of times while out hiking in rather water soaked hills. But I think the fact that everyone was sliding all over the place makes it less embarrassing. What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Thanks to denial, I’m going to live forever! Four people (Dead or Alive) you’d invite to your dream party? Female Celebrity party – Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Alison Brie, Rachael McAdams. Male Celebrity Party – Gordon Joseph Levitt, Christopher Nolan, Ejiofor Chiwetel, Peter Jackson. Intellectual Party – Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Peter Higgs, Leonardo Da Vinci. Your favourite movie? Never ask a movie fan such a question! Which Genre? What mood are you in? What mood do you want to be in? The list would be to long! The best film I saw most recently would have to me the Lego Movie, “Everything is awesome” Most treasured belonging? Life itself! Actually, probably my car, it’s Awesome Sauce

What has been your most challenging event? Recently completed a Ramble, Scramble and Dangle. Hard work (I’m not as young as I once was) but felt a real sense of achievement, especially pulling myself up a very narrow climbing ladder on a vertical rock face. On an adventure/fun scale 11/10. What is your funniest memory in Spice? Loosing my footing on abseiling and swinging in the air is funny now I think about it - wasn’t at the time! What would be your advice for a new member? Jump right in and book as many events as you can before you change your mind. You won’t regret it. Have you been on a Spice UK holiday? Not yet, but I’m definitely looking for something in 2014. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Some people might say my ten-pin bowling skills are embarrassing! What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Don’t wait for your life to happen to you - go out and find it. Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? My 3 grandparents who died when I was young as I never got a chance to know them, and Russell Crowe - in my opinion, the best actor in the world. Your favourite movie? Gladiator - seen it so many times I can recite the script backwards. Most treasured belonging? My Lego sets I’ve had since childhood. Real Lego, not like now where half of its built already!

What has been your most challenging event? My most challenging event has probably been fire eating. It was a great day and something I always wanted to try. Once was enough though. What is your funniest memory in Spice? There are way too many funny memories to just remember one. I laugh every time I am out with the Spice crew. If I have to choose one it woulda probably be sports day at Center Parks last year. What would be your advice for a new member? My advice to new members is to do loads of events in the first few months. Anyone you enjoyed talking to get their number or add them in Facebook. Talk about what events you are doing next and build up a bank of familiar faces. Also set yourself a challenge and do something you have never done before. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Embarrassing ?? - what happens on a Spice event stays on a Spice event, goes all over Facebook and follows you for the rest of your life. There are plenty of embarrassing stories but people will need to find them out for themselves :) What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body. But rather, to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up,totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming .... WOW what a ride. Four people (Dead or Alive) you’d invite to your dream party? I couldn’t just have four people to a dinner party but if I had to I would include Oscar Wilde, Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson and Heath Ledger. Your favourite movie? My favourite movie is The Usual Suspects. The last sequence is out if this world! Most treasured belonging? my most treasured belonging is a stuffed deer called Hamish that my gran made me as a baby. It is still safe despite being much loved.

Spice weekends Here is a small selection of our up and coming breaks – three very different weekends with options, but there are many more so do check your local website.

Center Parcs Sherwood Weekend WHEN: WHERE: COST: OPTIONAL:

Our unmissable summer Center Parcs Weekend is now a Spice institution- a brilliant weekend break with TWO great exclusive parties and as much sport or relaxation as you can cope with! Special this year is the return of It’s A Knockout on the Sunday, adding a brilliant fun event into the weekend which will be another hi-lite. The sub tropical paradise is the centre of attraction with giant waves, water chutes, Jacuzzi’s, flumes, a thrilling wild water rapids ride, and much more. You can spend all day in the tropically heated ‘dome’, or move outdoors- tennis, squash, sailing, bikes, canoeing, gym, badminton, bowls, archery,- the list is endless...(you pay extra for these). There a few extra Spice Events organised by your local Spice Group like our Welcome Drinks Reception, BBQs, Badminton and Volleyball group sessions, ten pin bowling games, etc, to provide some great group focal points during the weekend. Or you can just choose to chill! The Saturday has free Dance Classes – great for mixing and meeting people –this year we are running with 2 sessions each learning the dance steps for the Flash Mob at the disco this year – this is limited to max 100 per session and will be on a first come basis. On Sunday we have a very special optional event with our own Carnival themed It’s a Knockout see below. Our accommodation is in beautifully located villas surrounded by woodland alive with cheeky not so ‘wild’ life. Fully fitted bathroom and kitchens, lounge, TV (with video channels), central heating and even an open log fire. The Villas are 3 & 4 bed-roomed (6 or 8 people), each villa has a double room for couples (or can be booked for single occupancy), twin rooms and some have a smaller bunk room! We will arrange members into Villas- grouping people together- don’t worry if you’re on your own, so are many others booking, and with Spice you won’t be on your own for long, as soon as you meet your Villa mates! All bedding is provided, as is household equipment. Food is not included, so you can self cater or eat out at a variety of on-site restaurants. Friday Night sees our Welcome Disco and Saturday night a Spice Disco with a late bar. Both Parties are included in the price and a Spice wrist band will be included with your weekend joining pack, giving you entry to the parties and our events. The Saturday night party theme this visit ties in with this year’s football World Cup host country Brazil and is ‘Carnival!’ which couldn’t be easier and adds a bit of Spice to the weekend! Think Rio, Mardi Gras, Venice, Notting Hill and much more – please remember when creating your costume however that Center Parcs is a family resort so WHEN: Sun 22 Jun 2014 please be appropriate with your design; nothing WHERE: Sherwood Forest, Nottingham to risky or racy! You can also wear your costume COST: £25 Member, £27 Guest for the It’s A Knockout on Sunday if it isn’t going to damage either you or the equipment On Sunday at Center Parcs we have a very special optional (Knockout Challenge will have the final say on event with our own Olympics themed It’s a Knockout – this on the day)! starting at 11am at the Golf Driving Range. Center Parcs - It’s A Knock Out

National Dragon Boat Racing WHEN: WHERE: COST:

Sun 13 Jul 2014 Pershore, Worcestershire WR10 1AF £29 Member, £32 Guest

Please Remember that you need to book for the camping and the party separately. These are great days out - Enter the Dragon! Up to twenty people sitting side by side in a forty foot long boat, with a carved dragon’s head and tail attached. A drummer in the prow beating time, a steerer in the stern keeping the boat on course with a giant paddle, the crew, ten each side speeding the boat down the river to the finish line! The atmosphere is brilliant, which is why this is one of the essential events in the Spice calendar! This is The Big One! A huge national Spice event organised for Spice by a great group of specialists. As it’s the Official Spice UK National Finals, all groups will be sending a team to compete. We have our own trophies and medals to go for, and the races will be run on a timed basis over the day. Don’t worry if you’ve never been in a Dragon Boat before, we’ll have plenty of time to practice before the racing begins in earnest (and as this is Spice, it’s all just for fun anyway!). For colour, spectacle and excitement Dragon Boat Racing has it all and is also rapidly becoming the mass participation sport on water. If you want to know what a great day out this is ask any of the members who’ve attended previous events. Dragon Boat Racing caters for all ages, male and female, in one crew and requires no experience. It’s great fun and totally unlike any other kind of canoeing with team work being the key, not strength. Get the start right and you can feel the boat lift out of the water and start to plane to give you a fast racing start, it’s amazing how fast a 22 person canoe can travel! Each boat is provided with an expert helmsman to keep you on the right track, and with the help of your drummer beating out the time of the strokes you are sure to get the rhythm right...well that’s the theory anyway! The venue for this year’s events is the river Avon at Pershore, on the northern edge of the Cotswolds. This is a beautiful setting in one of England’s most picturesque areas so you may want to make a weekend of it. Changing facilities are available and there will also be food for sale during the day. Parking is available on site and a transport list with directions will be sent out to all those who book. No experience is necessary to participate but you must be able to swim at least 50 metres in light clothing.

No Spicer should miss a Dragon Boat Day. It really sums up what Spice is all about – fun, friendship, excitement & the chance to try an activity that anyone can enjoy!

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. I know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 11 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time I am on an event, come up and say hello so I can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest – you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Rambles - Grading System

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibilities are to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on SatNav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time.

Walk more for less - our 5 for the price of 4 offer We are very keen to reward those who make our planning easier by booking events well in advance, so our great offer saves you money on your ramble bookings. Just book five rambles at one go and we will only charge you for four of them. When booking online, book four of the rambles and then in the notes box for the fourth one type the name and date of the fifth one and we will add that to your booking for free.

Join Roy and Linda for this Grade 3, moderately easy, infamous, 8 mile Wharfedale ramble. This popular walk starts from Barden Bridge on the river Wharfe upstream from Bolton Priory and heads westward on good tracks over the moorland to the reservoirs of Barden Moor. The final part of the walk is a riverside ramble up the Wharfe. Please dress appropriately, stout shoes or boots are recommended, warm, windproof and waterproof clothing is essential. Bring food and drink for the half way lunch stop. Lost? Late? Can’t make it? Text or ring Roy on 0780-1070526 (texts have the better chance of getting through in areas of poor reception.) If you have missed the walk start it may be worth looking for Roy’s vehicle. Instructions to possible meet points, lunch stop locations etc. are usually left on its dashboard along with a fluorescent ‘SPICE ARE HERE’ sign. Dogs are not allowed on this walk because of the grouse moor regulations. Grade: 3; Distance: 8 miles Directions: Bolton Abbey is well signposted from all directions. Welcome to another of my ‘Doorstep’ walks! Join me, Steve Sutcliffe, for a lovely day out not too far from Leeds or York. From the ‘Mex’ we shall follow the Leeds Country Way over to Bardsey. Where, believe it or not, is the oldest pub in the country! We then head out into the open farmland and some very easy walking over Rigton Moor to Wike. More mansions, nurseries, stables to admire as we make our way around Scarcroft Grange and the ‘back door’ into Thorner. Grade: 3, Bridleways, lanes, farm tracks; Distance: 9 miles easy Directions: From the A64 (Leeds) look for sign on your Left about a mile after the Red Lion. Follow road into Thorner, roadside parking. The Mexborough is pub nearest the church. From York, take A64 look for sign to Scholes, you want the next Right turn after that. Ramble: Spring alongside the River Derwent A circular walk between Hathersage and Bamford

Date: Sunday 13th April 2014 at 10:30am Place: Oddfellows Rd, off Station Rd Hathersage (S32 1DU) Meet: Hathersage public car park Pay & Display Cost: £5 Member, £7 Guest Host: Paul Hunt on 07973 139084 A circular walk between Hathersage and Bamford alongside the River Derwent and circling back along the south facing slope of the Hope Valley during Spring time. Trees should be starting to put on their seasonal canopies and new lambs will be making the most of the lush grass... or playing king of the castle more likely! We leave the village across grassland meadows to Leadmill Bridge and cross Derbyshire's main river, the River Derwent. This starts us on gently upstream stroll and it is well worth scanning the river for dippers and grey wagtails. Once we have passed through Goose Nest Woods the walk is mainly through grassland fields with the riverside lined by trees which should have a Spring appearance about them. You are now walking along a section of the long distance Derwent Valley Heritage Way … a 55 Mile (88.5K) walk that explores the beauty and heritage of the River Derwent from Shardlow (south of Derby) to Ladybower Reservoir … so no fear of the longer section we'll be heading in the shorter direction! We resist the temptation of the Stepping Stones and keep to the river bank to find the stone structure of Kentney Barn. As we walk along you can peer up to a skyline of millstone edges and higher moorland. We'll soon reach the confluence of the Rivers Derwent and Noe. The craggy Bamford Edge comes into view as we head over the valley to the village of Bamford. We go up through the village which is famous for its Sheep Dog Trials and we stick to typical sheep farming country of grass heaths on the south facing slope of the Hope Valley.... and hopefully it will be bathed in sun shine as we return to Hathersage. Hathersage has a variety of places where we can refresh ourselves .. from traditional tea rooms, walker's cafes to pubs. Meet: Hathersage public car park (Pay and Display) on Oddfellows Road, off Station Road. The car park tends to get full quite early. More parking is available “on-street” towards the railway station further along Station Road and along Station Approach. OS Grid Reference: SK2310 8138 Nearest Post Code: S32 1DU Distance: 6 miles Meet in the car park from 10am for a 10:30am start.

Walk Barnsley – the town’s new initiative to get more people fit - has teamed up with the UK’s leading social group to host a new friendship walk. Walk Barnsley and Spice adventure, sports and social group have organised the Friends in a Flash walk to encourage more people to get some exercise while meeting new people at the same time. It will be an ideal way to make friends as everyone will walk with a partner, before switching to a new person at certain points along the route. The six-mile ramble will follow a route along Wombwell woods and back. It should take no more than three hours and will finish at The Ash Inn so people can continue their new friendships over a drink. He said: “This is the first in a series of walks we are launching and one which has a nice twist as along with getting some fresh air and exercise, it’s a great away to meet like-minded people. “A lot of people join a gym in January then find their enthusiasm wanes after a few weeks but walking is ideal exercise as it can be fitted in at all times of day and doesn’t need any special equipment or training.” Lauren Fawkes, co-ordinator of the Yorkshire Spice group, said: “We hold a lot of walks for members and they are one of our most popular activities. “We loved the idea of having a walk where you were also encouraged to meet new people. Spice is all about making new friends and the idea of switching partners along the way means it’s a really inclusive activity.” Team Activ is a not-for-profit organisation which aims to get people of all ages in Barnsley active. Sunday 15th June 2014 at 10:30am Kettlewell, North Yorkshire (BD23 5QZ) The main car park £5 Member, £7 Guest Roy Layton on 07801 070526

Join Roy and Linda for this moderate Grade 2, eight mile Yorkshire Dales walk which starts and finishes in the beautiful village of Kettlewell. This popular walk climbs the mountain called Great Whernside (not to be confused with Whernside which is 20 miles away). The route starts with a stream side walk to the entrance of Providence Pot which is a notoriously awkward cave (one bloke's had to be rescued from it 3 times!) A short trip to Hag Dyke (the highest house in the old West Riding) follows before the final few hundred meters to the summit cairn and lunch. We then follow the ridge northwards before returning to Kettlewell along good paths and roads. This walk is rated as requiring moderate/high exertion levels but as Roy does not push the pace too much is well within most people's reach. Please dress appropriately, stout shoes or boots are recommended, warm, windproof and waterproof clothing is essential. Bring food and drink for the halfway lunch stop. Lost? Late? Can't make it? Ring or text Roy on 0780-1070526. Texts have a better chance of getting through in country areas. If you miss the walk start, Roy usually leaves advice on joining up with the group on the dashboard of his vehicle next to a fluorescent 'Spice Are Here' sign. Why not get there a little early and join Roy and Linda at the cafe over the road from the main car park? (buy your own though). Grade: 2; Distance: 8 miles Directions: Take the A65 westwards past Skipton then turn right onto the B6265. Near Grassington this road joins the B6160, this road leads to Kettlewell. The man who put his foot down

Saturday 21st June 2014 at 10:30am Ripponden, West Yorkshire Booth Wood reservoir car park £5 Member, £9 Guest Roy Layton 07801 070526

Join Roy and Linda for this 9 mile grade 3 ’the Farmer who put his foot down’ walk. Stott Hall Farm has stood perched 1100 feet up on the bleak Pennines since 1737. For over 200 years there was nothing else there but the birds, the sheep, the wind and the rain. But, after two centuries of splendid isolation, the M62 arrived - literally on the farm's doorstep. When the M62 motorway was being built in the 1970s a local farmer refused to sell his farm and as his farm house was bang in the middle of the proposed motorway route, he kind of figured that he had them over a barrel, Doh! The powers that be decided they’d had enough and split the motorway to pass both sides of the farm house. We pass the well double glazed farmhouse on this walk. This 8 mile moderate walk manages to capture the flavour of the moors before and after the incursion of the M62. After a short climb to the ridge the mechanical madness suddenly disappears and we enter a more tranquil world for the rest of the walk. We follow the Colne Valley Circular to Scammonden Water and the reservoir side walk before returning over the highest motorway bridge in the country. Please dress appropriately, stout shoes or boots are recommended, warm, windproof and waterproof clothing is essential. Bring food and drink for the half way lunch stop. If you have missed the walk start it may be worth looking for Roy’s 4 x 4 vehicle reg no ROI 2532. Instructions to possible meet points, lunch stop locations etc are usually left on its dashboard along with a fluorescent ‘SPICE ARE HERE’ sign. Well behaved dogs are welcome on this walk but must be controlled on a leash less than 2m in length at all times. Grade: 3; Distance: 9 miles Directions: Leave the M62 at J22 and turn right onto the A672 Ripponden road, the reservoir is 2 miles down on your right. Or, take the A58 from Halifax then the A672 through Ripponden the reservoir is then on your left. If you are using a Satnav system the postcode of the nearby Turn Pike Inn pub is HX6 4RH. There are no toilet facilities at the meet point.

The long days of summer offer us a chance to reach the little known waterfalls of Derbyshire from Fairholmes. A steep initial walk up to Lockerbrook and levelling out (a bit !) takes us over Rowlee Pastures. Passing the top of the geological feature known as Alport Castles we head over Alport Moors where we'll probably disturb a grouse or two as we trek through the heather. We then need to carefully picking our way down off the moor to find the almost secret waterfalls. The path down stream is not well defined and may involve agility skills to cross the stream or paddling if you are so inclined! After enjoying a lazy Summers-day lunch stop alongside a waterfall we head down to the Snake Pass and then up and over Lockerbrook Heights to get back to Fairholmes. Wednesday 25th June 2014 at 7pm Hangingstone Road, Ilkley (LS29 8BT) Cow & Calf car park £3 Member, £5 Guest Roy Layton on 07801 070526

Why not split the week up and join Roy for this evening walk? The walk starts at the famous Cow and Calf rocks above Ilkley. Please dress appropriately, stout shoes or boots are recommended, warm, windproof and waterproof clothing is essential. A torch may be a good idea on an evening walk but is not essential. Lost? Late? Can’t make it? Text or ring Roy on 07801070526 (texts have the better chance of getting through in areas of poor reception.) Usually if you have missed the walk start it would be worth looking for Roy’s 4 x 4 vehicle reg no ROI 2532. Instructions to possible meet points, lunch stop locations etc are usually left on its dashboard along with a fluorescent ‘SPICE ARE HERE’ sign. Unfortunately as this walk is fast and remote this service cannot be offered on this particular walk. Please read the Rambles: Essential Information page. Grade: 4 Directions: The Cow and Calf Rocks can be seen above Ilkley from the A65. If you are coming from the Leeds direction turn left at the main town traffic lights. Keep going up the hill and the car park is on the right before the Cow and Calf Hotel. Parking is free. 22

A classic Yorkshire walk

Saturday 28th June 2014 at 10:30am The Village Green, Burnsall (BD23 6BU) £5 Member, £7 Guest Roy Layton on 07801 070526

Join Roy and Linda for this grade three moderate rated, eight mile walk, which has only a few hilly bits (none too steep) and is one of the classic Yorkshire walks. The beautiful village of Burnsall, where the walk starts and finishes, boasts a Maypoled village green, one of the best river bridges in the Dales and, oh yes, a pub! The walk starts by following the river Wharfe down to How Gill before climbing gently to Trollers Gill. The ‘Gill of the Trolls’ with its overhanging limestone walls is said to be haunted by ‘a huge cat like creature with shiny red eyes’, but don’t worry it will probably be scared of Spicers. Other points of interest on the walk are a broached dam wall and ancient lead mines. Lost/Late / Can’t make it? Text or ring Roy on 07801070526 (texts have the better chance of getting through in areas of poor reception). If you have missed the walk start, it may be worth looking for Roy’s 4 x 4 vehicle reg no ROI 2532. Instructions to possible meet points, lunch stop locations etc are usually left on its dashboard along with a fluorescent ‘SPICE ARE HERE’ sign. Please read the Rambles: Essential Information page. Grade: 3; Distance: 8 miles Directions: Get onto the A65. Between Ilkley and Skipton turn right onto the B6160 (Grassington road). After passing Barden Bridge you will soon see the five arched bridge of Burnsall. The car park has a kiosk and is on the right just before the bridge. The parking toll is about £2 although free parking may be fought for immediately after the car park alongside the village green. Toilet facilities available at the meet point. If you are using a Sat Nav system the pub near the meet point's postcode is BD23 6BU.

Ramble: Ingleborough Yorkshire's most famous peak

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Sunday 13th July 2014 at 10:30am Clapham, North Yorkshire (LA2 8ED) Main Car Park £5 Member, £7 Guest Roy Layton on 07801 070526

Join Roy for this new to Spice, Grade 3, moderate 9 mile walk which starts and finishes in the village of Clapham. This walk takes us to lunch on the flat top of Ingleborough, Yorkshire’s most famous peak. The home of Brigantine guerrillas during the Roman occupation with views of all the other major Yorkshire mountains. This route is unusual because the return to Clapham follows a minor, little known path from the shoulder of Little Ingleborough for the descent. Other points of interest on the route are Gaping Gill (a huge pot hole which could contain St Paul's cathedral), Trow Gill and Ingleborough cave. Please dress appropriately, stout shoes or boots are recommended, warm, windproof and waterproof clothing is essential. Bring food and drink for the half way lunch stop. Lost? Late? Can’t make it? Text or ring Roy on 0780-1070526 (texts have the better chance of getting through in areas of poor reception.) If you have missed the walk start it may be worth looking for Roy’s 4 x 4 vehicle reg no ROI 2532. Grade: 3; Distance: 9 miles Directions: Clapham is just off the A65 between Skipton and Ingleton. The car park is well signed and is on the right of the main street, toilet facilities are available. Ten Pin Pyramid Leeds Recommended new members night

Dates: Thursday 3rd April 2014 Thursday 1st May 2014 Thursday 5th June 2014 Thursday 3rd July 2014 Place: Kirkstall Road Leisure Park (LS4 2DG) Meet: Bar Original at Hollywood Bowl Time: 7:30pm to 10:30pm Cost: £11 Member, £12.50 Guest Host: Jonathan Banks on 07969 349714

A favourite amongst all Spicers, our regular monthly 10 Pin Bowling night at hollywood bowl is action packed from the word go. More than just a bowling night, this is the night when friends old and new come together for a fun packed evening. A very popular evening that offers great value for money, and the chance of a good “chin wag” to catch up on the latest gossip over a beer. We bowl for three whole games giving you plenty chance to complete that pyramid! hollywood bowl has a fully computerised scoring system, housed in superb surroundings to help create a great atmosphere. Our bowling night is one of the special new members’ events as it's a great setting to meet a few people. New members are welcome to arrive at 7:30pm so that they can grab a drink, meet other new members and we can explain the pyramid game to them before we start. Regular players can arrive at 7:45pm so that they are ready to start bowling at 8pm. Lanes will be mixed up on the night so beware if you come with a buddy you may not be playing with them. We’ll decide how beforehand; it may be we match people from similar geographical areas, we may match people who do similar events or we may just pick lanes out of a hat. Bowling Spice style – not highest score wins but all will be explained on the night. We play up to six to a lane (we sort you out into groups of twos). Please note if you are very late you may not be able to play as we have to hand back lanes after 8pm if we’re not using them. It would also help us enormously if you can’t make it if you could let us know so that we don’t end up with odd numbers on lanes. The price you pay includes admission, shoe hire and three games of non-stop bowling! It is important that you arrive before 8pm and report to the event co-ordinator at the entrance to Bar Original (on your left as you enter through the main doors). Directions: From the M62 Junction 27, take the M621 (signposted Leeds). Exit the M621 at Junction 2, then at the roundabout take the A643 (signposted Wetherby) entering Leeds. Continue forward onto the A58 and at the roundabout take the A58 Wellington Road exit (signposted City Centre). Branch left, then keep in left hand lanes (signposted Ilkley) and continue forward onto the A65 - Kirkstall Road. After around a mile and after passing under the high railway bridge, turn left into the Cardigan Fields Leisure Complex (small black and white sign) where the Vue cinema is. There are plenty of parking spaces outside hollywood bowl, but it does get busy. 24

There is a snack bar at the start and finish of the ride serving hot drinks sandwiches and cakes. Please bring snacks and a drink to keep you going whilst riding. Regarding clothing, please bring waterproofs in case of foul weather and wear tracksuit bottoms (not too baggy) or cycling shorts plus a fleece type top and gloves to protect your hands and a rucksack to carry them. This is one of those experiences of a lifetime! You'll never have an experience like ballooning. You arrive at the launch site...nothing is happening. A van arrives, towing a large 'shopping' basket. People gather in groups, look skywards muttering about clouds and met reports. Then suddenly it’s all action with people running everywhere as our balloonists decide we're going for it! Final checks are made, you hop in and are away, rising majestically, taking an eagles view of the fields and hills spread in a tapestry below. In experienced hands you'll enjoy a memorable flight, lasting 30-60 minutes before they bring you gently earthward. Please note: flights are weather dependent, so dates cannot be guaranteed. If you’re unable to fly on the date chosen, our supplier Wickers World will offer another date that is mutually convenient. Their special terms & conditions will be sent

The lovely people at Sale Water Ski Club which is a member’s only group have very kindly offered to give a limited number of Spicer’s the opportunity to try out water skiing.

Tonight we meet at The Green Room for a Spice exclusive buffet. The buffet will consist of chilli & rice, an assortment of Sandwiches/Wraps, Pasta or Cous Cous Salad, Greek Salad, Tortilla Chips with dips, and Indian snacks. After the buffet, we will stay to enjoy The Green Room's popular open mic night - take part or simply watch and listen! Location: The Green Room is on the corner of Devonshire Street and Westhill Lane.

The two hour session will give you some dry land training before seeing you join club members on the boat where you will all be given a chance on the training bar by the side of the boat. This means that the ski instructors on the boat can give you help to hopefully get you up on the skis! For those of you have already have some experience of water skiing or those that show they have the capability, there is the opportunity to ski behind the boat. In between Spicer’s giving it a go you will also get the opportunity to watch SWS club members showing you how it should be done so you can pick up tips from them too. The price includes the hire of the wetsuits from Trafford Water Sports Centre, your tow of 8 minutes and a spice admin fee – the club are giving their time for free to try to attract new people to the sport. You may want to pop in to the café or the nearby Jackson’s Boat pub afterwards to discuss the most spectacular ski tales of the day. Cameras are a must for this event and obviously you need to bring your swimming cossie, a towel, non-slip shoes such as old trainers that you are prepared to get wet and any toiletries you may need for utilising the showers afterwards. You may want to bring some munchies and a drink although there are refreshment opportunities nearby.

Tank Battle Experience .. challenge your fellow teams to a tank paintball battle!

Date: Place: Time: Cost: Host:

Sunday 20th April 2014 Lutterworth, Leicestershire # (LE17 6NW) 9:45am to 12pm £95 Member, £99 Guest Spice West Midlands

This event has had great feedback. We have booked 4 tanks, each of which take a crew of 3 Spice members who will be with their tank throughout (so no waiting around on this one!) We start with a practice session, where we put the tank through its paces on the 1 mile track and firing range. We will alternate the 3 positions in the tank so that each person gets a chance to drive, a chance to load the gun and a chance to fire. The gun is adapted to fire paintball ammunition, and can be fired with the hatch up or down. In battle, of course the hatch has to be down and aimed by periscope. After the practice, the four tanks will do battle, with each tank attempting to out manoeuvre and “knock out” the others with their huge, paintball firing guns. For this part, teams will not be able to switch positions, so you will need to decide between you or toss a coin to decide who will drive, who will load and who will fire.

The ride starts with a short section of the Sett Valley trail but after that it’s all up and down, taking in Chinley Churn, Mount Famine and Roych Cough and that is just on the way out. To get back we have to get up Jacobs Ladder! This is a great ride taking in some Peak district classics. Lunch will be at a pub or cafe en route but as always please bring plenty of snacks and drinks to keep you going whilst riding. Regarding clothing, bring waterproofs in case of foul weather and wear tracksuit bottoms (not too baggy) or cycling shorts plus a fleece type top and gloves to protect your hands. Footwear – cycling shoes, lightweight walking boots or good trainers are best. We recommend that you bring a change of clothes in the car and take extra clothing with you on the ride. Helmets MUST be worn at all times during the ride. This ride is not for beginners to mountain biking and we very strongly recommend at least attendance on a Spice “Improvers” Mountain Bike BEFORE attempting this one.

Lindy Hop Dance Workshop The original form of jive

Date: Saturday 26th April 2014 Place: Wadsley Bridge WMC, Halifax Road, Sheffield (S6 1LB) Meet: Wadsley Bridge Working Mens Club Time: 12:45pm to 4pm Cost: £18 Member, £20 Guest Host: Sheena Brabazon 07966 737215 Lindyhop is the original form of jive. Born in the black ghettos of 1920s America, and imported to Britain via the GIs during World War II, this is a high-energy, joyful dance that will make you buzz. There's so much to squeeze into this workshop that we've had to make it three hours long! For the first hour we'll be learning the most iconic solo Lindy routine with the wonderfully whimsical name of The Shim Sham. It's danced all over the world wherever Lindy Hop is found, and is a great introduction to the timing, rhythms and style of this amazing dance. After a well-deserved break we'll jump back in with some basic partner moves, making up a short routine that you can dance to a full track. But be careful - Lindy is addictive! Note: Smooth-soled shoes are best for this kind of dance if you have them (they don't have to be dance shoes, just ones without much traction). Flats or low heels are the norm - you'll struggle to dance it in high heels. Location: Wadsley Bridge Working Mens Club is on the A61 Halifax Road north of Sheffield. From Sheffield take the A61 north. After passing Hillsborough Stadium go over a roundabout and then the road curves to the right. You will find the entrance on the left just opposite Lidl. There is a large car park.

After taking the UK and West End by storm in 2013 the hit musical Miss Nightingale comes home to Yorkshire! Northern songbird Maggie and her Jewish composer, George, are struggling to find their big break. She longs for stardom and the high life. He wants to bring a bit of his beloved Berlin to Blighty. Everything changes when they are picked up by wealthy man about town Sir Frank Worthington-Blythe who needs an act to launch his new nightclub. Maggie is transformed into Music Hall star 'Miss Nightingale' and her outrageous outfits, satirical songs and scandalous love life make her the toast of London. But away from the showbiz glamour, heartache and secrets threaten to change their lives forever. Miss Nightingale is a glorious show, where saucy humour spotlights a moving tale of love, loss and hope – when every day needs to be lived as your last, and the best you can do is stand up and be counted. The original songs, from hilarious tongue-in-cheek numbers to tender ballads, perfectly capture the style and spirit of the Forties. 'The songs are terrific' - THE TIMES 'Fabulous, flirty and outstanding - Go and see it' - YORKSHIRE EVENING POST 'A gorgeous love letter to 1940s London' - CLICK 'Deeply touching and raucously funny' - THE NEW CURRENT Location: City Varieties Music Hall is situated in the heart of Leeds City Centre on Swan Street which links Briggate with Lands Lane, close to the Victoria Quarter. It is within a pedestrianised area with heavily restricted vehicle access and the closest drop-off point would be on The Headrow. The theatre is easily accessible by public transport. It is approximately 10 minutes walk from the main bus station and 15 minutes walk from the train station with many buses stopping in the immediate vicinity. Secure public parking is available at various nearby car parks, including The Light (via Great George Street) and the St John's and Merrion Centre shopping malls. Sunday 27th April 2014 at 10am Edwinstowe, Sherwood Forest, Notts (NG21 9JL) Sherwood Pines cycles & cafe £15 Member, £17 Guest Jeremy Sainter on 07974 967209

A long day out in amongst the forests in Nottinghamshire - nearly all the biking is off road on a combination forest tracks, bridleways and winding singletrack. 50 kilometres in total! Starting and finishing at the well known mountain bike venue of Sherwood Pines Visitor Centre near Edwinstowe/Mansfield, our ride uses the miles of off-road tracks in this area in and around the Nottinghamshire forest including the former ducal estates of Clumber & Birklands to the north and Sherwood Pines to the south with its ever increasing number of purpose built mtb tracks and trails. The terrain is not too hilly, what we would call ‘gently rolling’ but as the majority of the ride is off road, you will know you’ve done it afterwards! There is some lovely forest singletrack close to the Pines Visitor Centre so we’ll incorporate as mush of this in the ride as we can. The start/finish point has good facilities including cafe, bike wash, bike shop, toilets and parking. As the ride is not too hilly or technical it will suit intermediates (or improvers who feel they are up to the distance). You must have mountain biking experience though and not mind a bit of pain now and again along with some mud and dirt. This ride is a challenge even in in summer! Lunch will be at either a pub or cafe en route, but to keep you going whilst riding you need to bring some of your own food and drink. Regarding clothing, bring waterproofs in case of foul weather and wear tracksuit bottoms (not too baggy) or cycling shorts plus a fleece type top and gloves to protect your hands. SPD’s, lightweight walking boots or good trainers are best on the feet. Helmets MUST be worn at all times during the ride. Bike hire: Don’t have a bike, no problem hire a bike for the day from Sherwood Pines cycles. Contact them directly http://www.sherwoodpinescycles.co.uk/hirebikes.html or call 01623 822 855 Grade: 3; Distance: 50km (31miles). The grade could be harder if the weather is inclement.

Date: Place: Time: Cost:

Thursday 1st May 2014 at 7:15pm Eckington Road, Coal Aston, Dronfield (S18 3AX) Coal Aston Village Hall £7 Member, £8 Guest Dawn Spier

A great Am Dram production by Norton Players. Derek Benfield's hilarious farce: Panic Stations! Chester Dreadnought has bought a lovely country cottage, dreaming of idyllic peace, but is he able to enjoy it? Not with Abel Bounty, the local unhandy man, always around, and not with Carol, an attractive girl who seems to have mysteriously moved in. Those who have met Chester already in Wild Goose Chase and Post Horn Gallop know his aptitude for social and anti-social blunders, and Lord and Lady Elrood and scatty Miss Partridge also make a reappearance." Come and see this great play, bring your friends, some refreshments and have a lovely night. This performance is Cafe style so please feel free to bring your own alcoholic or soft drinks and a glass. Abseiling for the Terrified ..a great way to get started

Dates: Saturday 3rd May 2014 Sunday 15th June 2014 Saturday 12th July 2014 Place: Black Rocks, Matlock # Time: 10am Cost: £29 Member, £32 Guest Host: Spice West Midlands Many members would love to do an abseil, but are too petrified to book the ones we normally offer. After seeing Mark Fenton's ability to gently coax even the most frightened, or physically disadvantaged people into achieving brilliant outdoor feats, I started these special sessions which have proved extremely popular! You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all. Mark will get you to overcome any fears by building up your confidence gradually. First we get used to the equipment and how to use it on a few very short descents, before tackling some bigger abseils if you feel able. You’ll not be forced to do anything you are uncomfortable with, or feel stupid if you back out of any stage. So go on…you’ve nothing to lose but your fears! Medical Note: If you have any medical conditions that could prevent you taking part in this adventure activity, please contact your doctor in advance to check. If you are unsure, please contact the instructor, Mark Fenton directly on 07798 790766 or your Spice office.

Saturday 3rd May 2014 from 1pm to 3pm Carr Farm, Carr Lane, Thorner, Leeds (LS14 3HE) £35 Member, £39 Guest Jonathan Banks on 07969 349714

Set on the outskirts of this beautiful Leeds village, our new Segway venue is ideal for getting the most out the Segways. There is a 150m learning track where riders will be introduced to the Segways and be taught how to ride them safely. Once confident, riders can move onto the intermediate track which is much larger, incorporates many more twists and turns and introduces some obstacles. Finally, we have our largest section which incorporates a variety of different terrains including sand, mud, bark along with humps, logs, obstacles and a see-saw. Our two hour session will begin with a brief explanation and demonstration on how to control the Segways. All guests will then have a chance to climb on board one of the machines and be taught exactly how to ride the Segway safely. Time will be spent in the beginner area until riders feel completely comfortable in starting, stopping and manoeuvring the Segway. We then move onto our intermediate track which is a little more challenging and offers more twists and turns as well as a selection of obstacles for riders to encounter. Depending on how confident riders feel on the machines, we will then either move onto the largest track which incorporates a variety of terrains, including mud, sand, bark, humps and bumps, obstacles and a see-saw. Alternatively, we may wish to finish off with some Segway games which can include (time allowing) Seg and Spoon, Segway Slalom, Time Trials, Water games (weather permitting). Please be aware that time on the Segways will be shared. Location: Meet at Carr Farm on Carr Lane Thorner.

The hugely successful Bombay film industry - known universally as Bollywood - is one of the most prolific in the world. And a Bollywood movie is not a Bollywood movie without a generous helping of song and dance. In this workshop you'll get a taste of this dance style which, although mainly Indian in flavour, incorporates a fusion of hip-hop, Arabic, Latin, and a host of other dance styles. It's one of our most popular workshops and will probably hook you on Bollywood for life! You can wear any clothing that doesn't restrict movement, and footwear shouldn't have high heels, because it's nigh on impossible to dance Bollywood in high heels! Bring a bottle of water with you, too. It's thirsty work! Directions: The main entrance is on Macaulay Street next to where the road meets Lincoln Green Road. Access to the complex is down a ramp and into the car park. We are on the left hand side as you drive in. ...a fascinating insight in to the origins of South Indian Cooking

Dates: Sunday 11th May 2014 at 11am Sunday 15th June 2014 at 11am Place: Lauren's Home, Sale, Cheshire # (M33 4RN) Meet: 10.45am for a cuppa! Cost: £15 Member, £16.50 Guest Includes: a vegetarian South Indian Meal and Light Refreshments Host: Lauren Fawkes on 07852 366055 We discovered Peter serving up lovely vegetarian food on Altrincham Market and although described as Indian food, it was far from what we had become used to being served up. None of that oily, high calorie food we buy from the local take-away; its food produced from the soul as it has been over centuries in the Tamil region of India. We were intrigued so invited him along to show us and a few guinea pigs (friends) how it’s done and we had a great evening – so much so, we figured it would make a fab Spice event. Peter gives a fascinating insight in to the Spices, Vegetables and Pulses he uses and their health benefits as well as explaining their origins before going on to prepare a typical Tamil lunch for us to enjoy.

If you see an event on another Spice Group’s website that you would like to do, we can list it for you. If it’s not already listed on the Spice Yorkshire website, just give us a call or drop us an email and we will add the event to our website so you can book it.

Local legend and author Howard Marks takes an active role in Azucar by drawing on his vast travel and writing experiences to add a creative edge to the bar. Howard, famous for a number of books including Mr Nice, has chosen Leeds as his home and lives one minute away from Azucar. He’ll use the bar as a base for when he’s writing or simply enjoying a monitor. In his own words, “You have to live life to write about it.” The decor is dark and richly colourful. The walls are adorned with Howards travel memorabilia, while the furniture is an eclectic mix of old church benches and pews (with a pulpit functioning as a DJ booth) and comfortable sofas.

Sunday 18th May 2014 at 10am Millers Dale # (SK17 8SN) £35 Member, £39 Guest Mark Fenton for Spice West Midlands

Ever fancied the idea of a freefall abseil (like the SAS do out of a helicopter!) from a precipitous 80' viaduct to the river bank below…and then climbing back up using a metal caving ladder which swings and sways! (saves having to walk all the way back to the top anyway). We thought you might, so we arranged a great day for you. Once you've plucked up the courage to do it once, there will be no stopping you. It's a great confidence booster and gives a real sense of achievement. This day is run by Mark Fenton (who many have written in praising and requesting more of) so you can be sure that there will be lots of fun, a relaxed atmosphere where absolute beginners will find lots of nurturing and encouragement and a totally commitment to your safety at all stages. This is a brilliant first or second abseil experience. It is also an ideal training for anyone wishing to do our more advanced caving trips as you will be able to learn some of the techniques above ground rather than under!

A gem of a ride with spectacular moorland views around Langsett

Date: Sunday 25th May 2014 at 1:15pm Place: 8 Regent Street, Chapel Allerton, Leeds (LS7 4PE) Meet: 1:15pm in the bar for table at 1:30pm Cost: £16 Member, £18 Guest Includes: all you can eat buffet Extras: drinks payable on the day

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Sunday 25th May 2014 at 10:30am Penistone, South Yorkshire # (S36 6DY) Car Park, Shrewsbury Road, Penistone £16 Member, £18 Guest Jeremy Sainter on 07974 967209

Grade: 2; Distance: 26 miles. Varied Intermediate ride taking in open moorland and rolling open countryside; grade 2 because of the distance. Bike hire: Sorry there is no bike hire on this ride. A gem of a ride with spectacular moorland views around Langsett reservoir, followed by the rolling countryside lanes and trails around Penistone & Silkstone. We will be starting from the car park in the centre of Penistone but we will soon be out in the countryside and heading towards Langsett. We get a cracking view of the reservoir and surrounding moorland before we dive into the valley and circumnavigate the reservoir itself. We then climb up to join the Trans Pennine Trail. After an easy section along the Trans Pennine Trail, it is an old railway line; we head off into the rolling countryside around Silkstone. We pick our way along some cracking little bridleways and quiet country lanes as we make our way to Cannon Hall and a cafe lunch stop. We then continue to explore the beautiful countryside as we head to Upper Denby before heading back down to Penistone and return to the car. All in all a great ride in a rarely explored area which is less than 10 miles off the M1 at junction 37. To undertake this ride you must have recent mountain biking experience and not mind a bit of pain now and again, along with some mud and dirt. This is a challenging ride and should not be attempted by beginners to mountain biking. Lunch will be at either a pub or cafe en route, but to keep you going whilst riding you need to bring some food and drink. Regarding clothing, bring waterproofs in case of foul weather and wear tracksuit bottoms (not too baggy) or cycling shorts plus a fleece type top and gloves to protect your hands. SPD’s, lightweight walking boots or good trainers are best on the feet. Helmets MUST be worn at all times during the ride and as already mentioned we highly recommend cycling gloves to protect your hands. Also bring a change of clothes and a towel to leave in the car just in case. Any questions or problems on the day call Jez on 07974967209. Please read the Mountain Biking Information page.

Tandem Skydive It's no good thinking about it - you have to live the dream and do it!

Date: Sunday 1st June 2014 at 1pm Place: Hibaldstow # (DN20 9NN) Cost: £240 Member, £250 Guest (Deposit £40 Member, £50 Guest) Extras: Balance of £200 due on day. DVD of skydive is £95. IT'S NO GOOD THINKING ABOUT IT - YOU HAVE TO LIVE THE DREAM AND DO IT! THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING EVENTS SPICE OFFERS ITS MEMBERS! We now have over five hundred members nationally in the '10,000ft Club' who have tasted the heady heights of this special unique

freedom. The members that have done it (just ask myself or Jackie Hill) rate it as one of their best events ever! Target Skysports operates from the Drop Zone at Hibaldstow Airfield, nr Brigg in North Lincolnshire. There is a café & bar on site as well as toilets & showers and camping is available at the airfield for free. To Tandem Skydive you are attached to one of the country's top parachute instructors (in keeping with SPICE policy) who then leaps from an aircraft at up to 15,000ft. You fall through the air with the greatest of ease at a mere 120 miles an hour in free fall - for approximately 35 seconds - before the instructor eventually pulls the ripcord and the parachute safely carries you back to earth for a gentle ride down of about 4 minutes to a tip toe landing in the pit. Tandem Skydiving offers the easiest and quickest way to experience your first jump without the need for a lengthy training session. A short 20-25 minute briefing session will guide you through what is required to exit the aircraft, freefall from up to 15,000ft and land a modern high-performance square canopy after a lengthy canopy ride. After your training, you will be fully kitted up with all necessary equipment before boarding the aircraft for the 20-30 minute climb to altitude, giving you plenty of time to admire the scenery – or come to terms with your nerves or fear of heights! The exit from the aircraft is from up to 15,000ft, allowing a freefall for around 1 minute at speeds of approximately 120mph until the parachute is deployed at 5,000ft. The exhilaration of freefalling is absolutely breathtaking with sensations which just have to be experienced to be believed. Canopy deployment is controlled by your Instructor at the end of the freefall and is just the start of a slow, peaceful ride down to landing lasting around 5 minutes. Tandem canopies are fitted with dual controls allowing both student and Instructor to steer and control the canopy. Landing is controlled by the Instructor, allowing a comfortable touch down for the safest way to land on your first jump! The prejump briefing by the Instructor covers landing techniques and procedures in detail. An experienced aerial photographer will be available to take photos and a DVD of you in flight for £95 sounds a lot on top of your jump fee but worth every penny, and comes highly recommended. In for a penny - in for a pound I guess. Everyone is welcome but please note those aged 40 or over or with any medical conditions require a British Parachute Association medical form completing, which must be signed by a doctor, and your doctor may charge for this service. If you are 40+ please state this when booking and we'll send it to you, or it’s available online. Allow time to arrange to get this signed before the day. This event is weather dependent, however you will be trained whatever the weather on the day you book for, and jumped if possible, so there is no weather check to do. If you cannot be jumped on your booked day, Target Skysports will arrange a new date for you. There is a weight limit of 16 stone to participate in this event. The total cost of the event is £240. You need to pay a deposit of £40 to secure your slot & then pay £200 on the day at the beginning of your training. Payment on the day can be made by credit card (3% surcharge), debit card or cash. Spectators are welcome and there is a spectator’s area 75m from the landing area and a cafe inside too. Pets are not allowed. Please state your age (on the event date), weight and height when booking.

Beginners Kayaking

Rounders In The Park

Paddle around Pugneys

another great summer sport

Dates: Sunday 8th June 2014 Saturday 9th August 2014 Place: Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (WF2 7EQ) Meet: Reception area Time: 1:45pm to 3:30pm Cost: £22 Member, £24.50 Guest

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

What is a canoe? So what is a Kayak then? If these questions give an indication of your ability in this type of craft then this is the event for you. To me the big difference seems to be – If you tip over in a canoe (like the red Indians use) you fall out! If you tip over in a kayak you do an Eskimo roll and pop back up again (if you are very good, most normal people still fall out!) This is not part of the plan for our absolute beginners intro session to kayaks. The idea of this one and a half hour session is to encourage anyone who has never been in one of these “fun boats” to come along and have a go. The group will be limited to 8 people so that the instructor (in a kayak) can let you do as much or as little as you individually want on the day. We have chosen Pugneys with its flat water, to make your introduction to kayaking as trouble free as possible. You will not even be asked to capsize (the bit everyone always seems to remember!). You will require a change of clothing (the water runs down the paddle and up your sleeves!), a windproof top, old cagoule or the like and a pair of old trainers and towel. Showers are available on site. Please ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home. Directions: Pugneys water park is 2 minutes from junction 39 of the M1, take the A636 towards Wakefield. At the first roundabout, take the second exit to continue on the A636. At the next roundabout take the third exit into the park. Meet at reception desk. Parking is free for those using the watersports facilities.
