Hello and welcome to our Winter newsletter, and now we have the madness which is Christmas behind us, we can concentrate on making sure 2013 gets off to a great start, and focusing on those New Year resolutions to get out more, meet more people, and have more fun! We always have a huge intake of new members joining us at the start of the year, so a big friendly WELCOME from all of us in Spice, take a deep breath and get on that first event fast, and prepare for possibly the most exciting year of your life! It’s also Ski season, and with over 15 Ski Trips running, we wish all skiers a snowtastic time. Most trips are full but cancellations come in and we still have some spaces on our Beginners trips, the snows looking great across Europe this year, so if you are on the last minute, better get ringing!

Presented within is another huge batch of wonderful opportunities to experience more ‘life’ with a ready-made bunch of people who by their decision to belong to Spice, want to share in life’s rich and varied experiences, with a fun loving gang. If you’re new to Spice, the front and back coloured sections relate to the wider world of the Spice network of Groups, while the middle section from Page 7 onwards, relate to your local Branch of Spice. Bear in mind the printed word is so very quickly out of date, as our rolling Programme of events is added to on a daily basis, some with short notice, so do use this newsletter in conjunction with the website, so as not to miss anything. We also like to keep you updated with our weekly email featuring next week’s events, so make sure you are getting that and if not, speak to your local Spice Office. Its amazing how often people change their email address and not tell us, and this is our prime way of communicating with the vast majority of members. Facebook is also a great staying in touch with us, particularly for photo-sharing. Plus we have set up more local ‘groups’,

for example – around events like weekends away (Center Parcs, Murder Mystery, Dragon Boating), and also specialised interest groups, like Book Clubs, Sports Groups, etc – check out your local Group. Our National Facebook Page is at www. fb.com/spiceuk, and there are links from there to all the local groups pages. If you are big on Twitter, follow us (Spice_UK) and your local group, and use the hash tag #spiceuk on your tweets, to make sure we don’t miss all your tweets! And we are always very grateful for all your social networking support by liking, comments, sharing, retweeting, subscribing, thumbs up, google plus-ing, pinning and who knows what else! And if this paragraph is making no sense whatsoever, just know that there is a social networking revolution, and its changing the world rapidly! Scary and exciting all at the same time. Across the page you will see we feature a couple of members from around the groups, and we like to cover a broad spectrum of people, from newbies to oldies, the social types and the adrenaline junkies, singles and couples, as it helps show the world the type of people who join our happy band and what they get out of it. I have often said the answer to the Question – ‘What is Spice all about’ has 10,000 different answers, as it means something different and personal to each and every member. We are always looking for volunteers for this section, so if you are up for it, please drop me a note (dave@spiceuk.com) and I can send you the list of questions. I will also try not to accidentally invite 10,000 members to drop in at your house – something I did last newsletter, by leaving a personal note from our Profile Volunteer (Caroline Keightly) to me, in the write up! Ooops sorry Caroline, hope you weren’t swamped! So enjoy the Winter months, and look forward to seeing you on an event soon! Dave National co-ordinator

Which Group are you a member of?

Birmingham

How long have you been a Spice member? About 5 years

Why did you join Spice?

To do something more exciting with my life than just the usual work/gym/telly regime and make new friends who’d want to come out to play with me.

What has been your favourite event?

I can’t pick just one! For doing something completely different, the fire eating was incredible. How many people can say they’ve perfected the art of spitting white spirits? For the adrenaline rush, jumping out of an aeroplane. For happy memories, the holidays & weekends away, particularly Centre Parcs. Spice does the best fancy dress parties!

What has been your most challenging event?

The arachnophobia workshop without a doubt. I did my parachute jump 2 weeks before this and loved every second of that but spiders!? There were a few tears and a bit of snot but I am so proud of myself for holding that tarantula!

What is your funniest memory in Spice?

Oh crikey, I should have kept a diary! Amongst the highlights that I can remember has to be: Getting in some pre-dragon boat racing practice in a blow up dinghy on the river the day before the big event & almost sinking; singing rude versions of ‘old macdonald had a (use your imagination here)’ around the campfire; winning a trophy for the best handbrake turns of the day because my team all gave me 10/10 despite the instructor having to pull the handbrake because I didn’t have enough muscle; working the theme by having a food fight at the school disco party; starting out a little shy at pole dancing & burlesque dancing and then strutting my stuff like a diva by the end of the session; being sprayed with champagne after winning It’s a Knockout; etc etc I could go on!

What would be your advice for a new member?

To echo the Nike advert, just do it! After that, get yourself on Facebook. Lots of members are on there and it’s a great way of making lasting connections and sharing photo’s once you’ve met people on an event.

Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday?

As well as loads of weekends away i’ve been skiing twice with Spice & loved every second! It’s been fab to meet so many lovely people who will pick me up when I inevitably fall off my ski’s, lure me into bad behaviour with bailey’s & hot chocolate before i’ve even got to the bottom of the mountain & party the night away with. They’re holidays that you can make what you want of & for me it’s a non-stop exhausting and exhilarating action & laughs week. Bring on the next one!

Have you an embarrassing Spice moment?

I’m not convinced there’s such a thing as embarrassing in Spice, the daft stuff is just another excuse for a giggle! Although I was a bit sheepish accidentally gatecrashing the men’s only shower time on the Dragon Boating campsite, oops, sorry guys.

What is your life philosophy in one sentence.

Love every day. And I can’t resist nicking a line from Rocky Horror... Don’t dream it, be it!

Most treasured belonging?

My kitty cats. I love being out & making the most of every day but it’s also lovely going home and having two purring fluffballs curl up next to me.

Michelle & Robin

Which Group are you both members of? Manchester

How long have you been a Spice member?

Michelle: I have been in spice for around two years Robin: Just over eighteen months now

Why did you join Spice

We both joined Spice because we individually found ourselves with little or no social circle. Friends with boyfriends/girlfriends or friends that had started having families or lived far away etc. We had both decided that we wanted to join some kind of social group where we could participate in all sorts of weird and wonderful events, and make new friends in the process. Spice seemed like a good place to start.

What has been your favourite event?

We both really enjoyed the Party Cruise along the canal, and Centre Parcs is a must!! Oh and of course, on the original Printworks bar tour where we both met!

What has been your most challenging event?

Michelle: Going on a really long walk with spice when I had pneumonia which I thought was just a chest infection. Not the best idea I have ever had but I didn’t want to miss my walk!! Robin: The kind of events I’ve done I wouldn’t really call challenging (not like the way in which running a marathon would be challenging!) but perhaps the first ever one I went on – just having the confidence to do it.

What is your funniest memory in Spice?

‘It’s a knockout’ at Centre Parcs – we both had such a great time, even though our team didn’t win!

What would be your advice for a new member?

Book as many events as possible and speak to people. Don’t be shy - everyone is in the same boat, but people in Spice are really approachable. It will be the best thing you have ever done. We have met so many great people and made new friends and also found each in the process, which is obviously a bonus!!

Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday?

We haven’t been on any Spice holidays (yet!) but have been on some of the Centre Parcs weekends and are looking forward to the one this December. They’re really good fun and you get to meet loads of new people and make new friends. There are loads of events on too, from badminton to dance classes and then the parties are great fun. We would definitely consider going on a Spice UK holiday in future, as we’ve heard lots of good things about them.

Have you an embarrassing Spice moment?

Michelle: No! Robin: I went on the wild camping weekend in April 2011 and failed miserably to ‘pack light’ having to carry all my gear about a mile to the camp location from the car park. One of the instructors helped me carry some of it the whole way, but on arrival noticed the 4-pint bottle of milk that had been stashed in my bag (for one night only I might add!). Needless to say, I was given some deserved verbal abuse for the rest of the weekend!

What is your life philosophy in one sentence.

Live life to the full, do what makes you happy, and don’t stress over the little things!

Most treasured belonging?

Michelle: I have two necklaces which I always wear and hardly ever take off and a necklace that my Gran gave me with her and my Grandad’s picture in it that I don’t wear as I would not want to lose it. Robin: I’m not a big hoarder of stuff so don’t have any particular belongings that I wouldn’t want to let go of. Good memories are far more valuable to me.

Adrenaline Addiction?! Spice has a long history of being at the forefront of new and exciting adventure sports, did you know we were the first people to Bungee Jump in the UK, and also imported a Zorb from New Zealand in 1999, and first to roll people down hills! Its not often new sports come along these days, but when we heard about these two, we were quick off the mark to

FLYBOARDING

secure the ‘launch days’ for Spice! So if you fancy yourself as a pioneer, and love having ‘been there, done that’ , come and join our Flyboarding and Jetovator Days and be in there at the beginning. The Press will be present, so this is not for those who want a low profile! As ever, contact your local Spice Office to book these events.

WHEN: Sun 17 Mar 2013 Northampton Sun 3rd Mar 2013 Victoria Dock London Meet At 8.00am COST: £155 Member, £165 Guest

We have managed to secure the first official date for the general public for this event - so another amazing Spice scoop! We have organised a whole day that will give you two flights of 25 mins each. After the first 25 mins you should have just about got the hang of it, and the second 25 mins you are up up and away and can really start to enjoy the Flyboarding Experience. The Flyboard attaches to a Jet Ski for power, using a water jet for precision flying through the air or underwater. The Flyboard consists of a thirty foot power hose, foot bindings on a board with two thrust nozzles, a stabilization thrust nozzle on each wrist, and an optional electronic management kit so that the person on the Flyboard can control the throttle and the on/ off switch. With practice, you can hover over thirty feet in the air for the best view of the water possible! You will also be able to learn precision flying, diving, flying underwater, and aerobatics like back flips, spins, twists, and dolphin swimming if you stick at it. The Flyboard is the ultimate water toy that will get the attention of anybody serious about adrenalin!

Introducing the ONLY Jetovator in the UK! A revolutionary new watersports accessory that uses an existing jet ski to elevate you to heights you never thought possible. Combining the sleek body of a racing motorcycle with the aerial capabilities of a fighter aircraft, the Jetovator allows the rider to experience the thrill of flying with the ease of riding a bike. The intuitive controls allow first time riders to fly like professional pilots. Climb to heights of up to 30ft, dive down to 10ft below the water, and rocket above the surface at speeds of up to 25 mph. The experts can amaze onlookers with awesome stunts like barrel rolls and back flips. Engage in close contact formation flying with multiple Jetovators. It’s time to turn off the video games...Saddle up...and Ride the Hose! So what happens on the day? On arrival you’ll be required to sign a disclaimer confirming that you’re in a reasonable state of health and fitness. The instructors then run through all the fundamental training required before you can fly, after you will kit-up into your wet suit, helmet and buoyancy jacket – it’s then on to the lake where you will experience your flights. After your flights, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase a DVD of your flight as well as be given your free flight certificate signed by your instructor. Don’t worry if it’s raining, you are going to get wet anyway

CO-ORDINATORS Corner Welcome to the winter edition and my first ever Spice newsletter! : Spice Yorkshire has had the most amazing year and with over 10,000 bookings taken, around 500 new members and a complete change of ownership. I have spent the last 6 weeks manically learning databases, payment and booking systems and planning the next exciting programme which takes us towards the end of March. Thankfully there is a great team in the Spice office to help. I am now personally coordinating and attending as many events as possible and I am involved in a Spice event nearly every other day in the new programme whilst I struggle to find my bearings and settle in to such a busy, challenging and unique role whilst working out what an earth I’ve let myself in for. It’s a complete career as well as total life change for me.

January and February for Spice are the busiest times of the year for new members joining, ensuring they are welcomed in to the Spice family and making them feel comfortable will of course be our main priority and I know I can rely on you all to help assist in this and if you are one of our recent joiners a big welcome to you and be ready to try some new things and let your hair down for 2013! Our group couldn’t support the number of events that we do without the help of our volunteer coordinators who are members who give their time back to host events in return for a free place on the event. We currently have a limited number of vacancies for volunteer coordinators including coordinators for Bradford, York, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Hull, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and Chesterfield. If you are interested in any of these roles please email me at the office on neal@spiceyorks.com & I will forward details including an assessment to complete. Please note we will be running a training & motivational day for all coordinators in February (TBA) and it will be essential for new coordinators to attend this. Nearly all our great value popular barn weekends are available now for 2013 in this newsletter or online and there is a low deposit (£10) and we have added a few new locations so be sure to secure your place early and pay the balance later. Amongst our regular New Year events including our Ski Trip and New Year’s Ball we have several new events to highlight which include a number of new restaurants to try, some with live music. A new venue for the regular Sheffield bowing, a Sixties themed live music and buffet evening and some incredible adrenaline days including Fire and Glass walking and another Spice members first, the debut of Flyboarding on the UK’s first ever Jetovator which we have helped open to Spice and the public. As usual we will continue to update the events programme on a daily basis so be sure to check the Yorkshire web site for new items frequently, which just leaves me looking forward to meeting many more of you soon and wishing you all a Happy New Year and a fantastic Spice packed 2013.

The Flyboard consists of a thirty foot power hose, foot bindings on a board with two thrust nozzles, a stabilization thrust nozzle on each wrist, and an optional electronic management kit so that the person on the Flyboard can control the throttle and the on/off switch. With practice, you can hover over thirty feet in the air for the best view of the water possible!

When the Krypton Factor returned to ITV1 they wanted an assault course even tougher than the one used in the original series, so they came up with this one at Richmond in North Yorkshire. Our challenge is to navigate the official Krypton Factor course in pairs, as on the TV show. Skid Pan Session how to control your car if you hit a patch of ice, snow or mud

Date: Place: Time: Cost:

Sunday 13th January 2013 Tockwith, near Wetherby # Time slots from 10am to be posted £65 Member, £70 Guest

Do you know how to control your car if you hit a patch of ice, snow or slippery mud, or if your brakes lock and your car starts to skid when you have to brake very suddenly to avoid an obstacle? I know that I don't, that I simply panic and scream and breathe a huge sigh of relief when I manage to stop without harm! A session on the skid pan - in someone else’s car - will teach the skills you need to control your car in these difficult situations. It's fun, fast and totally exhilarating! The morning will start with full briefing, then two cars at a time, you will each take a 30 minute turn on the skid pan 'in control' of a car. Don't forget your camera for this one. You should also wear old shoes & clothes on the day because you do need to walk across the oily skid pan. Time slots from 10am will be posted out to you. The aim is to get out of a skid, but by the end of a session, you may be an expert in 360° spins. There is a café on site.

Robin Hoods Bay Weekend Away A barn type weekend in one of our favourite locations.

Date: Fri 16th Aug 2013 - Sun 18th Aug 2013 Place: Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby # (YO22 4ST) Cost: £59 Member, £79 Guest (Deposit £10) Another one of the now famous (maybe infamous?) Spice Yorkshire weekend breaks. These days most of its income comes from tourism & the village offers a broad range of activities & has a variety of shops, cafes, restaurants & hostelries. The Old School House is an ideal location to explore not only Robin Hoods Bay but also the adjacent National Park & some of the best attractions in North Yorks. It’s less than 5 minutes to walk to the beach & village centre. We are a short drive from Whitby, Scarborough, the heart of the moors & Dalby Forest.

The Cowan family farmed in Halton Gill for nearly 150 years, and converted the traditional stone barn to provide high quality, low cost, group accommodation. Local craftsmen have retained the original charm and features of the buildings while providing very comfortable accommodation to the highest standards. The Bunkbarn is just outside the village so is safe, quiet and private. It is warm, welcoming and spacious, with oil-fired central heating, a pay phone, no meters, ample parking and a wellmaintained one acre playfield. Plus major bonus - There is a genuine 10 seat Finnish Sauna which everyone seems to enjoy using after a strenuous day on the hills - also free of charge! Bring your cossie.
