AUTUMN 2015

Hi all, and welcome to the Autumn edition of the Spice newsletter. Firstly, like OMG where has this year gone (my feeble attempt at being young and hip!). With so much happening in the background with Spice it is a wonder how we get such a wide variety of events and holidays together and deliver them with such finesse. All credit to your dedicated Coordinators and their diligent teams including all of you volunteer coordinators! Our premier Spice holiday to America and the Grand Canyon for an 8 day rafting trip has just returned led by your East Midlands coordinator Steve who, in his own words said ‘8 days rafting were absolutely magical! Both places are very different really opposite extremes - Las Vegas is a real happening and buzzing work place and you will either love it or hate it! But the Grand Canyon is an experience that is out of this world!’. The 2016 trip has already filled one raft and only needs another 3 members to confirm a second one - if you are interested in coming on this ‘once in a lifetime’ trip please call us so that we can get your details onto the waitlist. In this edition we have past events we are talking about, skiing (the full ski programme is up and running), Christmas events, some great social media stories, and the usual attractions with gallery and member profiles. In the last newsletter we mentioned our social media programme and I am pleased to inform you that we are supporting #Zestember (this month) – if you haven’t already then why not check it out? We have so many posts from members on this already and it is great to know Spice members are supporting this initiative to build a healthy nation. So thank you for you selfies and posts. We have been filming some new testimonial videos which are just being edited ready for release very soon. Thank you for those who participated on the filming day at Center Parcs Sherwood and the Dragon Boat event. It is very humbling to hear some of the reasons why you may have found Spice and what it has done for you – an amazing legacy for almost 35 years!. And talking of 35 years…next year registers that very landmark and as with 25 and 30 years we will be holding a Spice National Ball towards the end of the year. We hope lots of you will come and join us – just ask around and get the stories of the two previous National Balls if you need any encouragement. This one will be released for you to book before Christmas so make sure you have your diaries ready as it does fill up very quickly! As always keep a look out for new events and the old favourites as well as your pages from your local groups that let you know what is happening in your area. Until next time what are you waiting for…Live your Dream. Ian Purvis, Spice UK

Name: Jayne Taylor Group: Yorkshire

Name: Michelle Picton Group: West Midlands

How long have you been a Spice member? 5 years Why did you join Spice? I joined for very common reasons, living in a city where I didn’t grow up and I didn’t even study at Uni – and it just got increasingly difficult to organise things with friends and actually get people together to go out and do things. What has been your favourite event? I would say that I’ve enjoyed most events that I’ve been on – I tend to only book things which I know I want to do, then you know you’ll have a good time with like-minded people. I do really enjoy the Center Parcs weekend at Sherwood Forest and loved doing the It’s a Knockout challenge a few years ago. What has been your most challenging event? This must be the Jousting in Warwickshire – though I loved the idea and had been a (very basic level) horse rider when I was younger – that was probably about 25 years previous – and when it began to canter around the jousting arena I thought I’d fall on my bum – but managed to stay on somehow! What is your funniest memory in Spice? Funniest memory in Spice is the School Sports Day at Center Parcs a couple of years ago – it’s hilarious to watch people running in the wrong direction after spinning around a post, but the funniest part for me was the 3 legged race when me and Jeanine fell over and just couldn’t get back up for laughing! I think we got a medal for that even though we were 5 mins after everyone else – I think they took pity on us. What would be your advice for a new member? Advice is to just book things which you know you want to do – then your guaranteed to enjoy it, even if it feels scary.

How long have you been a Spice member? 12 maybe 13 years I think Name: Maxine Caine Group: I live in County Durham, but have been adopted by Spice Yorkshire, as it is the nearest group to me How long have you been a Spice member? I joined around 3 and a half years ago to go on a Ski holiday, my initial plan was to join for three months. The rest as they say is history. What has been your favourite event? Oh, this tough, it’s not about the events it is about the people and I’ve met some amazing people, who make me smile on the inside and out. Center Parcs, ski holidays and dances are memorable, I love the way the dance floor fills up at a Spice event.

Why did you join Spice? I became too old to remain a member of Rotaract and too young (in my opinion) to follow on into Rotary. As I enjoy being part of a group/organisation Spice filled that void in my life. What has been your favourite event? My favourite events are the weekends away and recently enjoyed punting in Cambridge with a posh pimms picnic. What has been your most challenging event? I’ve not taken on a challenge as yet but I think abseiling would be top of the list. What is your funniest memory in Spice? I have had lots of happy times in Spice but really enjoyed a trip to Istanbul hosted by Richard drinking Turkish Raki shots and dancing on chairs with the locals.

What has been your most challenging event? My first ski holiday, it was my first Spice event and I was absolutely terrified! All my ‘normal’ (non-spice) friends, thought I was crazy and was joining a swingers group! I had the most amazing holiday.

What would be your advice for a new member? Book on a weekend away where you have time to build up a rapport and forge new friendships or something like rambles where you have a greater chance of meeting the same people on a regular basis. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I’ve been to Dubai and looking forward to Iceland in December.

What is your life philosophy in one sentence. My life philosophy is “It would be boring if we were all the same”

What is your funniest memory in Spice? Too many to mention, I’ve laughed until my sides hurt. I will never forget the baby pigeon conversation at Robin Hood Bay, you had to be there...

Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? On my list would be Oscar Wilde and Nelson Mandela and of course the gorgeous Robert Downey Junior, struggling with the fourth – probably someone calm because 2 of these people would be competing against each other I’m sure!

Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I’ve done two ski trips and Christmas in Morocco, all fabulous. I’m very excited about Thailand in October.

Your favourite movie? Difficult choice – the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka

What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Cherish every moment, memories last longer than dreams.

Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? My holiday to Finland. I had a wonderful time – standing on a frozen lake watching the Northern Lights dance across the sky. The Snow-mobiling, husky sledding and night in a glass igloo just added to the event. The small group allowed us to get to know each other. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? I try not to get embarrassed – but it’s usually the things I say which make people laugh at me…. Someone else would have to tell you what they think I should be embarrassed about.

Most treasured belonging? My diary as I am so busy I can’t keep track of my social life without it.

Most treasured belonging? Memories!

What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Life has no remote... get up and change it yourself Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Patrick Swayze, George Clooney, Miranda Hart and Tom Cruise Your favourite movie? Dirty Dancing Most treasured belonging? Charm Bracelet gifted to me by the folks for my 21st Birthday.

Coordinator’s Corner Well that’s the summer under our belts and we are now heading full pelt towards Christmas however we have managed to put on some super events before then and we have even been promised an Indian Summer again, here’s hoping! As the cooler weather progresses our programme does tend to become a little less outdoor centric however there are still plenty of outdoor events available with walking, abseiling, caving, foot golf, clay pigeon shooting, mountain biking and much more. And with the approach of Halloween, Christmas and New Year, there are also plenty of party and social opportunities available too. We also have plenty of fabulous UK breaks coming up too including the last of our bunk barn weekends for the year, our Christmas Break at the Doubletree by Hilton in Lincoln, which is on early bird until the 31st of October, several New Year breaks including Hogmanay in Edinburgh or a great Party and Cruise break in London. More locally we have a Halloween Party in Sheffield and a Zombie Fright Night in Leeds at the end of October. In November we visit the Oktoberfest in Leeds. As we move into December there’s our Christmas Party Cruise in Sheffield, our big Christmas Party in Leeds, and many Christmas meals and dinner shuffles. After Christmas we have New Year’s Eve party options in Sheffield and Leeds and looking into early 2016 we have details of our New Year Ball with a discount for the first 30 bookings so don’t snooze! As always we have lots of regular socialising opportunities throughout. In Sheffield Paul is now organising a monthly Saturday pub crawl with a different theme each month. We’ve also got various theatre trips (including the world premiere of The Girls in Leeds) and live music shows all over our region – do please book these early as we can’t hold on to tickets indefinitely. A couple of new events in our programme this time are the Coffee Culture day on 15th November where you can learn the skills of the barista, and for the more adventurous we have the Trapeze and Circus Skills on 29th November. Numbers are very limited on these so do book soon if you want to be sure of a place. The Ski season is looming too and we have over fifteen trips on offer nationally including a couple of trips to Andorra which are just great for beginners & social skiers. Whatever you get up to, we wish you plenty of fun.

Lauren

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. We know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 13 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time we are on an event, come up and say hello so we can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Contact us The Spice office is normally open from 10am until 6pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays. Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

York

Dates: Tuesday 10th November Tuesday 19th January Place: Brooklyn Bar, 50 Call Lane, Leeds (LS1 6DT)

Dates: Tuesday 6th October Tuesday 12th January Place: The Old Queens Head, 40 Pond Hill, Sheffield (S1 2BG)

Date:

Tuesday 27th October

Brooklyn Bar is on Call Lane, between the entrance to Queens Court and the railway bridge. Disabled access is through the side entrance from Queens Court. The nearest outdoor parking is opposite the Adelphi pub unless you get very lucky and get a space just outside the venue. Indoor car parking is in the Trinity Leeds Car Park behind Chaophraya or in the Q-Park Criterion Place upstairs from Bibis Italianissimo. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs and then join us upstairs?

The Old Queens Head is right alongside Sheffield Bus station and adjacent to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Pond Hill. The nearest tram stop is Fitzalan Square / Ponds Forge just a 5 minute walk away. The railway station is a 10 minute walk. There is some street parking on Pond Hill and more on Pond Street, or you can use the car park at Ponds Forge or the Castle Gate Q-Park next to the Travelodge. We meet in the area to the right as you enter through the main door from Pond Hill.

The Royal Oak is at the Monk Bar end of Goodramgate. There is no parking along Goodramgate so use one of the car parks just outside of the walled shopping centre. We meet in the upstairs function room which is through the inner door and then up the stairs on your right. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?

Place: The Royal Oak, 18 Goodramgate, York (YO1 7LG)

For all locations we meet from 7:45pm. Please try to be there by 8pm for the talk.

Can’t make it? Don’t worry … Don’t worry if you can’t make it to any of our preview nights – it’s not essential! You can always find out more about Spice on our website at www.spiceyorks.com. Or give us a call during office hours on 0161 864 2554 where we’ll be happy to answer any questions whether they are general ones about Spice or about a specific event. If you’re not already a member you can join either online or by phone and get started! Once you have your membership number you can login to the website to book events. The next page has lots of suggestions of great events to start you off, but there aren’t any set rules – just choose something that looks fun or interesting and get involved. Recommended New Members Events We understand it can be very daunting when you are a new member, or thinking about joining Spice. To help you, we have put together a New Members’ Pathway that guides you through the best route to getting out and about, experiencing new things and making lots of new friends. This is just a suggested pathway; you are of course welcome to dive into Spice on any event. Look out also for our Easy and Evening Rambles for a gentle introduction to walking – walks are a great way of meeting a few people.

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibility is to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on SatNav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time unless agreed with the walk leader after consultation with the other walkers.

Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

Ramble: Tegg's Nose

Date: Sunday 4th October at 10:30am Place: Edale, Derbyshire (S33 7ZA) Host: Mick Cornfield on 07710 192399

Date: Place: Cost: Host:

A classical Peak District walk from THE rambler's village of Edale and capturing panoramic views along the ridge of Rushop Edge. This walk begins and ends in the village of Edale popular with ramblers and famous as the starting point of the Pennine Way. Good walks and knobbly knees are in abundance around here. We'll be bound for a south west route that takes us up on to Rushop Edge which is a favourite Peak District ridges with many hikers for its well defined paths and its panoramic views across to the Kinder massif and to the White Peak in the south. Leaving the village and its cute train station we'll cross the Sheffield-Manchester railway and watch it disappear into Cowburn Tunnel as we ascend the track known as Chapel Gate. Do not fear ...!... the route is not straight up but is at an angle to the steep south hillside. As you walk you will soon start to enjoy fine views down the rural Vale of Edale surrounded by majestic high moorlands. After a mile we reach moorland plateau and the route flattens out as we reach Rushops Edge and head to Lords Seat with its ancient tumulus. As you walk along the Edge see what you can pick out to the south …. Black Edge and Buxton beyond, Eldon Hill marking the start of the White Peak District and the natural amphitheatre of Winnats Pass as it snakes down to Castelton. As we head eastwards along the Edge, Mam Tor comes into view and the mother mountain beckons us to follow the ridge .. so we do … after a (steady) pilgrimage up the shivering mountain we continue along the great ridge. When we've reached Hollins Cross we head downhill back to Edale. Distance: 7 miles

It is also Europe's largest working rare breeds farm with over 400 animals set within the original estate Home Farm. You can freely explore the cobbled yards to discover an interesting mixture of recreated workshops, exhibitions and rare breeds of livestock, all housed in the original buildings. The house itself is famous for its magnificent collections of furniture, ceramics, paintings, silver, textiles and wallpapers which are spread over 40 fully restored rooms. We are delighted to be linking up with The Knights of Middle England for this very special event. Based in the very heart of the Warwickshire countryside and in the shadows of the finest medieval castle in England, Warwick Castle. Go back in time and don the colours of your house as you train in 3 types of Medieval combat including Sword Fighting, Longbow Archery and Ballista Firing - to see if you could be victorious in battle and defend your castle from an attacking army! We’ll learn:

 

Longbow Archery: A great competitive activity - points are scored as you unleash an array of arrows – the trained archers/instructors will guide them to hit gold! Sword Fighting: We’ll pair up in teams and learn a professionally choreographed sword fight routine with medieval training broad swords. The routine will be straight out of a film they’ve worked on such as Merlin or A Knight’s Tale. Teams are scored on how well they perform and remember their routine – points will be awarded for the best death scene! Ballista Firing: Groups will fire “Peasants Heads” from a giant catapult or Ballista in order to hit the Knight statues or Shield targets in the distance, in a certain amount of time.

Your chance to discover your inner child and go exploring. Weaseling is sometimes called caving for claustrophobics and it involves wearing old clothes and getting dirty, some of the same skills as caving but in daylight and fresh air. Starting at the lower end of the Roaches the idea is to get through as many tight squeezes as you can, nothing too small, but great fun. The Roaches are tailor made for this activity being an area of large boulders in a jumble, some we have given names to the drop, the porthole and the chimney to name but a few, follow the leader in and out, under and over and up and down. 24

Brooms at the ready …

Saturday 24th October at 10am Millers Dale # (SK17 8SN) £35 Member, £39 Guest Mark Fenton for Spice West Midlands

Ever fancied the idea of a freefall abseil (like the SAS do out of a helicopter!) from a precipitous 80' viaduct to the river bank below…and then climbing back up using a metal caving ladder which swings and sways! (saves having to walk all the way back to the top anyway). We thought you might, so we arranged a great day for you. Once you've plucked up the courage to do it once, there will be no stopping you. It's a great confidence booster and gives a real sense of achievement. This day is run by Mark Fenton (who many have written in praising and requesting more of) so you can be sure that there will be lots of fun, a relaxed atmosphere where absolute beginners will find lots of nurturing and encouragement and a total commitment to your safety at all stages. This is a brilliant first or second abseil experience. It is also an ideal training for anyone wishing to do our more advanced caving trips as you will be able to learn some of the techniques above ground rather than under!

The Sheepdog Experience TLC - Thinking Like Canines!!

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Sunday 15th November from 11am to 1:30pm Mainline Collies, Baildon # (BD16 3AU) Golcar Farm, Spring Lane £69 Member, £75 Guest Vicki Sykes

A sheepdog is an intelligent thinking animal and is capable of making its own decisions when the line of duty calls for instant reaction to certain situations. Training a dog to work sheep requires not only skill and patience but also knowledge of the dog’s mind and of its basic instincts. Working a trained sheepdog requires a similar knowledge of the dog’s mind, for to work a pack dog the handler must first learn to think like a pack dog, TLC Think Like Canines. The Sheepdog Experience is not about rushing into a field and trying to move sheep from one area to another with a dog you hardly know and with no skill or feeling involved. It is about the skills involved, the history of the breed, the basic instincts, understanding the working mind of the collie and of learning to harmonise with it. The Sheepdog Experience gives you the opportunity to learn as much as possible about farming, sheep, Sheepdogs and trialling. You will also be surprised at how much you learn about communication and confidence and if you have a dog of your own you will pick up tips on training. Golcar farm is not a show farm, it is a working farm, our dogs are all working dogs and although they will try to make you work they will also make you laugh. Relax, learn and have fun with a bunch of cheeky happy collies. Please wear or bring with you clothes suitable for the weather conditions on the day. We do have all weather facilities but the nature of the activity dictates some exposure to the elements, free tea/coffee available on site.

Wednesday 25th November at 8pm Cavells, 31 High Street, Sheffield (S1 2GA) £12 Member, £14 Guest DI Paul Timewell on 07956 586851

It is 1889. Sir Charles Biskerville has been found dead in the garden of his ancestral home. There are no murder weapons and no footprints, only the paw prints of a gigantic hound some twenty yards away. Speculation is rife that there is canine involvement. Legend has it that the Biskerville family is cursed and that a terrifying dog haunts the moor. Has this luminous, ghastly and spectral beast struck again? The doctor that attended the scene believes that the baronet died of a heart attack brought on by shock but the question that everyone must answer is this. What did Sir Charles see on that dark, fateful night? We'll play in small teams and some of you will get to play the parts of the characters.

You will either end up saying how brave your fellow Spicer is or they will say "nothing - I'm a new member" in which case you can both go looking for someone with experience! You will find one thing all Spicers have in common, all over the country, is that they are friendly, positive people happy to talk freely to each other - there is no such thing as a stranger in Spice. Offer to share transport - meet people before you even arrive! Attend a preview night as soon as you can! Wear your best smile and GO FOR IT! LIVE YOUR DREAM!!!

We meet under the covered area by the tourist information at the entrance to the main long stay car park in the centre of Castleton at 5pm. Please do not be late as we need to then walk as a group the short distance to Peak Cavern for carols by candlelight in the cavern. This will be held in the Vast Cave with the Tintwistle Band. Peak Cavern is the largest cave system in the Peak District and is also known as the Devil's Arse for reasons you may discover when you visit! It's a fascinating place in itself and was home to Britain's last troglodytes until 1915, but tonight it will come alive to the traditional sound of Christmas. You will be welcomed on arrival with mulled wine and mince pies and then we will join the carol concert in this unique venue lit only by candles and the lights of the Christmas tree.

Both day's walks are quite extensive but the pace is leisurely so you don't need to be superfit to take part.

Welsh Cottage Walking Break with more challenging walks

Date: Place: Cost: Host:

Fri 13th Nov 2015 - Sun 15th Nov 2015 Lluest Fach Farm, Foel, Mid Wales # (SY21 0PB) £142 Member, £162 Guest (Deposit £25) Barry & Sonya of Breakaway Activities

Includes: Friday supper, full farmhouse breakfasts, picnic lunches and special five course evening meal with cheese and port In response to demands from our more serious walkers; who like the idea of a relaxing Country Cottage weekend but want more challenging walks, we’ve asked our friends at Breakaway Holidays to come up with this weekend break. With the challenge of exploring the lesser-known and exhilarating walking available in southern Snowdonia, followed by a leisurely evening sipping wine and roasting chestnuts, while a sumptuous five course feast is prepared for your special dinner party, we think this is a weekend you won’t want to miss. Over the weekend we plan to conquer one of the highest peaks in Southern Snowdonia, the spectacular Cadair Idris, using the picturesque Minffordd route. Cadair Idris derives its name meaning 'Chair of Idris' from the giant warrior poet of Welsh legend who was said to have used the mountain as an armchair to gaze at the stars and looms menacing and primeval over the surrounding landscape. On Sunday we’ll take in a shorter ridge over Pen Coed with possible sightings of the wild Cambrian Ponies and, of course, call in at a local hostelry en route. Both days on the hill will be full days out with most of the altitude gained in the early part of the walk. On these ridges you will be able to relax and enjoy long wonderful traverses with fantastic views as the ridges you will be crossing are wide, so you can enjoy the company while you soak up the scenery and fresh mountain air. Due to the shorter days we’ll be finishing the walks a little earlier giving us time to visit a local hostelry on the way back to our cottage. You will need a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy this weekend as the walks involve some steep scrambles.

Joining Spice has change my life, I have lots awesome caring friends ...I done so many Spice events ... Halloween parties, rambles, quizzes, weekend away in York, Christmas parties I could go on. And even better I made friends from Spice friends. Spice has helped me a lot as I have been though some tough times in life... Happy friendship to all

Yvonne Burton

Last quarter we celebrated National Friendship Day on 2 August and asked for members to post their stories about friendships that they have in the Spice family and I am pleased to mention that you responded with pages of content. We have looked through and selected the most touching ones but it seems the sentiment that runs through these words is mirrored by most.

Wow, broad subject! Turning point for me in Spice after two years of joining, was establishing U40 London with Sarah Cox after which our social group went CRAZY - in fact, the guys in the picture you have used to promote the post are all from that group, and we are still all good friends some 6 years later (after most of us are O40 now!). Another key point was arriving as a Swashbuckler for the S theme party at Center Parcs in 2010 and nicking water pistols off naughty schoolboys . This started my quest to get to know more people from the other regions outside London. The rest they say is history, and 300 friends (and growing) later!!! X

Jacquie Allix I’ll kick us off then. I made some wonderful friendships whilst rafting through the Grand Canyon with Spice. I’ll never forget Graham Marriott’s reaction when a snake slid through the camp, and Hayley Hillyard’s laughter will stay with me forever! #spicefriendship

Jon Tillyard

Got so many memories from friendships who I have met through Spice, I remember meeting many great friends through Spice many of which I’m still in contact with to this day. Always remember being really nervous on my 1st Center Parcs but by the end of it I was smiling from ear to ear as I had made friends for life there. #spicefriendship.

Ellen Davies Thank You Dave for having the foresight to start Spice. You have brought happiness and friendship to so many, along with all the challenges and excitement.

Jane Webster

I have had some great holidays and met some fantastic people. From hot air ballooning in Alberqueque, white water rafting down the Grand Canyon, the gullet cruises and finally Cuba last year. I am pleased to say that I am still in touch with many of my Spice friends xx

Racing the Dragon

Edinburgh Festival

There is always a fabulous “carnival” atmosphere at those big national Spice events where members of all the groups get together to have fun. One of our most famous and long running National events is our annual Dragon Boat Racing, held every Summer on the banks of the River Avon in Pershore.

Another Edinburgh Festival has come and gone for another year but what a brilliant time we had. It’s one thing to visit yourself and a totally different thing coming along with a Spice group.

It seems to have all the ingredients that make a great Spice event. Fun competition, mild adventure, lots of fun and laughter – and an excuse for a great party! Many people make a whole weekend of it. There is camping at Pershore Rugby Club on Friday and Saturday nights and a Spice party in the town on Saturday. But Sunday is when the event itself takes place and some members will just make it down for the day – either to take part or to support the teams from the banks. Dragon Boat Racing is the national sport of Hong Kong and is rapidly gaining popularity all over the world. It involves teams of 16 paddling furiously in long, colourful boats to the beat of an “on board” drummer. We try to put the teams together in a fairly random fashion, so you don’t have to know anyone beforehand. And anyone can do it. Yes, we like the fact that success is more about working together as a team than about having any athletic ability or experience – so there can be some surprise victories along the way. We are usually blessed by glorious sunshine. However, this year we had to contend with the rainiest day of August! However, the awnings went up and the magic continued regardless. We also had new winners for 2015, with Spice East Midlands taking the trophy for the first time. So don’t miss the opportunity to take part in one of the most famous dates in the Spice calendar. We are working towards a 2016 date of Sunday 10 July for the racing, with camping options on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 and our party on Saturday 9. Look out for it in the 2016 Summer programme!

As in previous years Jamie, the Spice Scotland Coordinator plans every detail to ensure a really great overview of Edinburgh during August. It’s always lovely to see members make great friends from different Spice groups - it’s a real social break. This year was no exception as we welcomed nearly 60 festival goers to the excellent Pollock Halls on the August Bank Holiday weekend. Over the course of the weekend members had a fully planned itinerary arranged with access to lots of different events throughout. As always we began with our Ceildh lively, energetic and always friendly - a great ice breaker for the Friday evening and the perfect way to get to know your fellow weekenders. Saturday we enjoyed the Royal Mile, Mervynn Stutters Pick of the Fringe Show followed by Cambridge Footlights sketch show. After a quick change it was off for dinner at the lovely Merchants restaurant before heading to the stunning Military Tattoo or vivacious Lili La Scala Cabaret Show. Sundays events came thick and fast with a free show at The 3 Sisters followed by the sunny picnic in Princes Street Gardens. Fosters Comedy Awards, Newsrevue and the excellent Patrick Keilty rounded off day 3 of the trip. Monday was soon upon us as some of us walked Arthurs Seat (Edinburgh’s volcano) and finished off with a lovely farewell lunch at Howies. It was all over too quickly this year - as it always is. One thing for sure - we’ll be doing it all again next year Friday 26 to Monday 29 August 2016. We hope you can join us too.

SKI WITH SPICE! Great company to ski with, fantastic après ski, crisp clean air, bright blue skies plus lots of laughs! That’s what you can expect from a Spice skiing holiday. Whether you are a total beginner or advanced racer, skiing is so much better in a group. Share your latest conquest with new friends whether it be moguls, off piste or just staying on your feet! Skiing is a very sociable sport and a perfect fit for everything Spice stands for. Enjoying new experiences, making new friends, exploring new places you can do it all on a Spice ski holiday. Last season over 500 of you joined us on the slopes and next season is already shaping up to be just as popular – will you be there? Skiing is not a cheap hobby – if any one tells you different they are lying (LOL)! If you have never skied before then a great way to start is to get along to one of the indoor slopes in the UK, that way you can see if it’s something you are going to enjoy before booking a ski holiday. Most of the Spice groups offer taster sessions at a local indoor slope and you’ll be in good company when you try it out as all the coordinators are experienced skiers. Once you have decided that skiing is right for you then it’s time to progress to outdoor skiing and an overseas holiday. This isn’t quite as straight forward as it might seem however; choosing the right resort both for your ability and pocket are very important to make sure that your first experience is one to remember for all the right reasons. At Spice UK we have a number of ski holidays every year each carefully chosen to offer something for all skiing abilities and the team are always happy to discuss the merits of resorts with members to help you make the best decision. The unfortunate thing is that once you have been on your first ski trip most people are hooked and then you will be planning just how many skiing holidays you can fit in one season or wishing the summer away so you can get out on the piste once again. Many of our skiers join us year after year, enjoying the unique organisation and camaraderie of a Spice ski trip. Of course in all this we have just talked about skiing but let us not forget our snowboarding friends…everything we have said for skiing goes for boarding so don’t feel left out – we would love to have you all enjoying a Spice holiday with us!

Highlighted Holidays SKI ANDORRA 1 – PAS DE LA CASA 8 days, Sunday 24 January 16 from £680 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester Our trips to Andorra have become so popular in recent years we decided we just had to put on two holidays this year and many of those who have been to Soldeu with us felt that a week in Pas de la Casa would give the chance to ski over there a bit more!

SKI CHRISTMAS - MERIBEL 8 days, Sunday 20 December 15 from £895 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester Spread your wings and explore the three Valleys. Our chalet is an ideal bases for skiers who enjoy plenty of variety. Intermediates especially will thrive on the 600kms of wellkept pistes; you can ski all week and still leave plenty of runs untouched. In the two villages and higher up, beginners can cut their teeth on a wealth of uncrowded nursery slopes. Experts can tackle the infamous Courchevel couloirs and the Chanrossa bumps. If the weather closes in, forest runs down the valley are the answer, while in sunny conditions Val Thorens, Europe’s highest resort, is the place to head for. Meribel is one of the more lively alpine resorts for après ski and Mottaret a little more reserved, but it has a good choice of bars and restaurants including Le Rastro which is always a good buzz. Meribel is easily reached from Mottaret by the free resort bus service.

SKI NEW YEAR -COURCHEVEL 8 days, Sunday 27 December 15 from £1095 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester The number one designer ski destination, this Three Valleys resort retains its premier position as the most stylish place to ski in France. With access to over 600km of perfect pistes shared with the Meribel and Val Thorens valleys, Courchevel is ideal for skiers of all standards. After skiing out on the easy, perfectly groomed pistes, leisurely skiers can potter into 1650 and enjoy lunch in style and sunshine. Stronger and more adventurous skiers may head for the infamous couloirs at the top of the Saulire cable car or the powder fields of Mont Vallon. In bad weather, there’s sheltered skiing in the forest above La Tania and Le Praz. Many will want to try the end to end the tour to the Maurienne Valley (beyond Val Thorens) and back, which, with the new efficient lift system, is perfectly possible in a day without rushing.

Known affectionately as ‘Pas’, the lively frontier town and mountain pass of Pas de la Casa (2100m) – with direct links to Grau Roig - is in north-eastern Andorra and close to the French border, with the airport at Toulouse less than 100 miles away. So there’s a distinctly French ambience. It’s not only the highest of the Andorran resorts, but the entire Pyrenees, with slopes as high as 2640m, and has a correspondingly good snow record – last year the resort claimed a 20-year high!

NICE CARNIVAL WEEKEND 4 days, Friday 19 February 16 from £469 Departs London Gatwick & Liverpool Why not discover the South Coast of France with Spice in February 2016 and forget the dull winter days. This is a short city break to Nice, including entry to its world-famous annual Carnival. Nice Carnival dates back to 1294, when the Count of Provence Charles d’Anjou spent the “the joyous days of Carnival” in Nice. Over the centuries, the city of Nice has celebrated the end of Lent with masked balls, fancy dress, egg- and confetti-throwing, and most recently, parades of floats through the streets. Floats are decorated with beautiful flowers and fun characters such as His Majesty “Triboulet”, the rag puppet mascot who leads the festivities.

SKI AUSTRIA – ST. CHRISTOPH 8 days, Saturday 20 February 16 from £864 Departs London Gatwick ,Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh St. Christoph, set in a spectacular open snow-bowl 500m above neighbouring St Anton, and just a short ski-bus ride from Lech & Zürs, share Austria’s No. 1 world-class ski area the Arlbeg with the other famous-name resorts. Without the distraction of many bars in resort (St. Christoph is very quiet!) this is a trip for anyone who wants serious skiing during the day and a relaxed chilled out evening – nearby St. Anton does however have plenty to offer if you do fancy the odd blow out! Skiing in St.Christoph offers a pretty, traditional village nestled in a picturesque setting, with a lovely blue run down from the Galzig peak running right back to our Chalet Hotel’s ski-room door!

WALKING LA GOMERA 8 days, Saturday 12 March 16 from £899 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow A week on the island which many people have described as a walker’s paradise. Indeed this small island is blessed with natural beauty, the kind of which ranges from lush valleys to awe inspiring cliffs and impressive rock formations formed by ancient volcanic activity. From the central mountain plateau where the mists swirl around the ancient laurel forests to the deep chasms of the many dramatic gorges that carve through from the mountains to the sea. Add to this the charming white walled villages and the terrific network of walking trails and we can’t go wrong. The excellent accommodation is ideally situated in the island’s main town of San Sebastián and is a superb base from which to explore the island. Even the journey there will be an enjoyable adventure as we take the ferry over from the honey pots of southern Tenerife to the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful and untamed island.

WONDERFUL COPENHAGEN 4 days, Thursday 26 May 16 from £499 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Edinburgh

CUBA – SUN & FUN 13 days, Tuesday 20 October 16 from £1599 Departs London Gatwick Join us on a wonderful Caribbean break to the historic island of Cuba! Get away from it all this autumn and enjoy some fun in the Caribbean sun with Spice! This 11-night break to the Caribbean’s largest island, famed for its rum, salsa, vibrant culture and stunning beaches will be amazing. Spend a few days in the happening capital Havana and immerse yourself in decades of history intertwined with a hot salsa beat and plenty of rum cocktails before transferring to quieter Varadero for 7 nights’ All Inclusive relaxation on the beach.

Denmark is known all over for it’s Vikings, but also the great story-writer H.C. Andersen has found his way into most people’s heart. So Spice would like to offer you the chance to discover Copenhagen, with its historical buildings and ancient streets, outstanding museums and galleries, the uniquely enchanting Tivoli Gardens and a resident monarchy that is the oldest in the world, the Danish capital has a host of attractions to suit all tastes. But this is no living museum; Copenhagen is a vibrant, modern city whose fascinating past coexists with the very latest trends in architecture, design and fashion. This is, after all, one of the world’s great design capitals, a status that is reflected in its dynamic new buildings and stunning shops making it a popular destination for tourists.

This is a trip with a real difference and something we have never come across before!

La “Costa Tropical” (the Tropical Coast) is situated to the west of Málaga and runs along the shoreline of the province of Granada for more than 100 kms. It’s filled with picturesque beaches, cosy coves and charming little towns and villages. The Costa Tropical is blessed with a subtropical microclimate and its average annual temperature is 20º and has around 320 days of sunshine per year. This privileged climate has helped the fertile plains and gentle slopes that rise up from the beach to grow all kinds of tropical fruit, which is the one the most important economic resources in the area. There is also some tourism and some foreigners have settled in the area, but it has not happened in the massive way as it has done in the “Costa del Sol” to the other side of Málaga. There is still a Spanish atmosphere about the Costa Tropical, and it’s only a short distance away from locations as special as the Alpujarras (Sierra Nevada), the last Moorish stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula or Granada with its world famous Alhambra. Far from being overcrowded, the Costa Tropical is still an ongoing discovery, and the locals are hospitable and generous with visitors.

Taking in India’s must see Golden Triangle – Dehli, Agra and Jaipur – to see the Taj Mahal, Amber City Fort and Agra Fort amongst other things we then head down to Mumbai for our insight into the world famous Bollywood phenomenon! And finally it’s down the coast to Goa for a well-deserved chillout! This is a trip we are sure won’t be available for long so don’t hang around.
