AUTUMN 2014

Welcome! Hello and welcome to the Autumn edition of your Spice newsletter. Well doesn’t time fly?…I can’t believe summer is past and we are now hurtling towards Christmas and all the festivities it has in store – guaranteed as a Spice member you’ll have plenty to keep you fully occupied! The last 3 months have seen some wonderful events taking place including our Edinburgh Festival Weekend hosted as always by Jamie, Spice Scotland and Dragon Boat Racing with Richard from Spice West Midlands – well done Spice West Midlands our winners this year (although only after the Spice coordinators plus ringers boat was withdrawn from the running after it posted the best single time - that could have been a bit embarrassing!) Over the summer the Manchester, West Midlands and London groups helped out in three of the UK’s Colour Runs which are charitable events. Each group sent a group of around 20 members to act as ‘color chukkas’ and what great days they were – the most fun you can have with paint without being arrested! Have a look at some of the pictures from the days and keep an eye open for next years to join in. We’ve also recently seen Spice appear on Sky TV in a programme about solo holidays – a great bit of PR for us and educational too. If you haven’t seen the programme you can catch it on YouTube titled ‘SPICE UK - The Holiday & Cruise Clinic’ – why not check it out?

Jamie Morris Spice Scotland Steve Dell Spice East Midlands

Dominic Renshaw Spice Thames Valley & Solent

The following pages are full of wonderful events – local, national and international – providing lots of opportunities to meet people, make friends and have fun on a daily basis with a superb bunch of likeminded friends. Page 9 onwards relate to your local Spice group but remember it is a rolling programme and new events are constantly being added some of which can be at very short notice so don’t forget to keep an eye on the web for the most up to date information on everything available to you! We have also got a little feature on Skiing with Spice. Whether you are a novice or old hand, adrenaline junky or more interested in the après ski, this is a sport made for Spice because it is so much better in a group! Share your latest experiences (for better or worse), enjoy plenty of giggles and maybe the odd gluhwein along the way - why not join us? Whatever your interests the Spice programme just gets bigger and better and I’m sure you’ll have lots of adventures to talk about over the next few months – and don’t forget to take your camera’s, phones, etc. with you. We love seeing all your pictures on Facebook often making us all quite jealous of the fun you’re having! So, what are you waiting for…Live your Dream. Ian Purvis Spice UK

Member profiles Name: Christine Wise Spice Group: Spice Manchester How long have you been a Spice member? I joined January 2013, so a little over 18 months. Although I did join first time round about 3/4 years ago and I have come back!. What has been your favourite event? Too many to pick one out. I loved Zipworld, The Chef’s Table at Manchester House, African Drumming. The Turkey Chillout 2013 where I made so many new friends. Dragon Boat Racing, another day of non-stop laughter. Next year Manchester WILL win! What has been your most challenging event? Probably the microlighting. I wasn’t sure what to expect and when the instructor gave me the controls I was convinced we’d spiral down to the ground, even though logic told me he’d take control long before that happened. What is your funniest memory in Spice? Again there are lots of laughs; but I was in hysterics at the Easter U40 v O40s bowling and dodgems, you had to be there! What would be your advice for a new member? Book anything and everything you’d like to do and some you’d never have thought of. There’ll always be a friendly face who’ll talk to you. And be bold, talk to them too. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Yes I booked the Turkey Chillout 2013, not realising it was more party than chill out. Had an absolute ball, made dozens of new friends from all over the country. So much so someone asked me why I was on a Yorkshire event when I lived in West Midlands (I don’t). And I’m off to Calpe this year. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? If I have I’m not sharing it with you lot What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Feel the fear and do it anyway Your favourite movie? I’m an old romantic so it would have to be An Affair to Remember, and as my sister said, it’s far better than Sleepless in Seattle Most treasured belonging? Bella my staffie, who comes along on the odd Spice dog walk, tho she’s a mate not a belonging. Oh and my collection of odd earrings.

Name: Paul Timewell Group: Yorkshire Why did you join Spice? I joined Spice as I had a huge DVD, CD and book collection and no friends to speak of. Now, I’ve a huge collection of friends as well! What has been your favourite event? Favourite event(s!). Tank driving, Dragon Boat Racing weekend, driving a steams train, field archery and running the monthly quiz. Really, I enjoy everything i do. What has been your most challenging event? My most challenging event was walking through the door the first time. I know it’s corny but everyone made me welcome and I’ve not looked back since. What is your funniest memory in Spice? My funniest memory was reading the question ‘how many pieces are worth 8 points in scrabble?’ Feeling smart, I added ‘and I’ll give you bonus points if you can name both of them!’ from then on, I’ve stuck to the script. What would be your advice for a new member? My advice for a new member would be: a) Choose four events to do in your first month or so. Three are things you love doing and one which will take you out of you comfort zone. Do them! b) When you go on an event, ask people you like what they are doing next. c) Remember that everyone had to walk through the door on a first event sometime. We know what it’s like! What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Life philosophy: You don’t stop playing when you get old, you get old because you stop playing. Most treasured belonging? Most treasured belonging: My wallet bottle opener! Best Christmas present I’ve ever had!

Name: David Carson Group: Manchester but formerly London How long have you been a Spice member? About 7 years, 4 in London 3 in Manchester What has been your favourite event? The Manchester bar tours (and not just because I host them now) What has been your most challenging event? Sailing from the Channel Islands overnight back to Blighty across the shipping lanes doing a ninety minute watch. What is your funniest memory in Spice? Walking with wolves, when the female wolf took a fancy to me, possibly the one and only time I’ve pulled at a spice event :( What would be your advice for a new member? Arrange to go to a few events with other new joiners so you’ll know a few faces. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Making a drunken bet to play a spice Bristol member at table tennis who had never played the game before.... and losing... What is your life philosophy in one sentence? Be young be foolish but be happy Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Don’t do dinner parties but my granddad Andrew Flintoff and the Doritos mariachi band are always welcome on the bar tours What’s your favourite movie? The big Lebowski the dude abides Most treasured belonging? My Samsung tablet

Ski with Spice Great company to ski with, fantastic après ski, crisp clean air, bright blue skies plus lots of laughs! That’s what you can expect from a Spice skiing holiday.

Whether you are a total beginner or advanced racer, skiing is so much better in a group. Share your latest conquest with new friends whether it be moguls, off piste or just staying on your feet! Skiing is a very sociable sport and a perfect fit for everything Spice stands for. Enjoying new experiences, making new friends, exploring new places you can do it all on a Spice ski holiday. Skiing is not a cheap hobby – if any one tells you different they are lying (LOL)! :) If you have never skied before then a great way to start is to get along to one of the indoor slopes in the UK, that way you can see if it’s something you are going to enjoy before booking a ski holiday. Most of the Spice

groups offer taster sessions at a local indoor slope and you’ll be in good company when you try it out as all the coordinators are experienced skiers. Once you have decided that skiing is right for you then it’s time to progress to outdoor skiing and an overseas holiday. This isn’t quite as straight forward as it might seem however; choosing the right resort both for your ability and pocket are very important to make sure that your first experience is one to remember for all the right reasons. At Spice UK we have a number of ski holidays every year each carefully chosen to offer something for all skiing abilities

“Scared at first as I was only my 3rd spice event... Had a fab week in Austria.” Claire Bateman

“The party atmosphere!” “I did my first ski trip with Spice, then my second & third. All I can say is they are Awesome; with a great mix of Skiing & après Ski, both at all levels ”

Phyl Edmonds

Stephen Offield

“Skiing with Spice is perfect for beginners - great fun and always someone to share the laughter with” Katie Buckle

and the team are always happy to discuss the merits of resorts with members to help you make the best decision. Of course it’s not just Spice UK that have ski trips available exclusively for members to book, your local Spice group will also have a ski holiday available so you have the choice of skiing with your local Spice members or with members from across the UK on our national trips! The unfortunate thing is that once you have been on your first ski trip most people are hooked and then you will be planning just how many skiing holidays you can fit in one season or wishing the summer away so you can get out on the piste once again. Many of our skiers join us year after year, enjoying the unique organisation and camaraderie of a Spice ski trip. Of course in all this we have just talked about

“I love skiing with Spice because you have always got someone of your ability to ski with” Sarah Stroud

skiing but let us not forget our snowboarding friends…everything we have said for skiing goes for boarding so don’t feel left out – we would love to have you all enjoying a Spice holiday with us!

Coordinator’s Corner Well that’s the summer under our belts and we are now heading full pelt towards Christmas, however we have managed to put on some super events before then and we have even been promised an Indian Summer, here’s hoping! As the cooler weather progresses our programme does tend to become a little less outdoor centric however there are still plenty of outdoor events available with walking, abseiling, caving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, mountain biking, skydiving, quad biking, sheepdog experience, llama trekking and treetop adventures with Go Ape. For the first time in our programme we also have Footgolf (page 31) which is a combination of football and golf! And with the approach of Halloween, Christmas and New Year, there are also plenty of party and social opportunities available. Don’t miss our Ceilidh Night at Woodkirk Valley in October (page 25) as we’ve booked the larger room this time to make space for more people to do more dancing, and have included a pie and pea supper. In November we have our 70s and 80s party at The Garrison Hotel in Sheffield (page 31). Into December the party season really gets going with our Christmas Staxamotown party in Sheffield and our Christmas Party at Headingley Stadium (book before 17 November for discounted price). The feedback from last year’s New Year’s Eve Ceilidh was so good that we’re doing it all over again this year (page 39) – there’s a £5 discount on this one for the first 40 bookings so don’t delay! It may seem a long way off but we have the first details of our New Year’s Ball at The Hilton City in Leeds in January (page 39) – this is another one with an early booking discount so please book this one by the end of November. We also have plenty of fabulous U.K. breaks coming up too including our ever-popular December visit to Center Parcs Whinfell, where this time our fancy dress theme is Cartoon Characters. You can spend Christmas itself at the Doubletree by Hilton in Leeds in the company of Spice friends; there are several walking breaks between Christmas and New Year and more New Year options including Hogmanay in Edinburgh or a great Party and Cruise break in London. And of course our regular monthly events continue whatever the weather: ten pin bowling nights, badminton, quizzes, book club, music club, dinner shuffles, curry clubs, Friday night Spice Hits Town and our Saturday Night Spice in the City nights. Whatever you get up to, we wish you plenty of fun.

Lauren

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. I know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 13 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time I am on an event, come up and say hello so I can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Contact us The Spice office is open from 10am until 5pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays. Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Rambles - Grading System

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibilities are to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on SatNav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time.

Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! http://www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

Ramble: White Hill to Denshaw Windy Hill Walk ....spectacular views across towns and moorland

Date: Sunday 28th December 2014 at 10:30am Place: Saddleworth, Lancashire Host: Wade Murphy on 07807 031485 Grade: 4; Distance: approx.. 10 miles A fairly challenging walk due to many 'ups and downs', this walk is an ideal introduction to the South Pennines which are tucked away between the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales and often passed over in favour of the National Parks. A fairly typical Pennine Way crossing of White Hill peat moor leads the walker to Standedge and on to the Oldham Way - a local long distance footpath that climbs from Oldham up to the Pennine high ground and back.

Blow away the holiday excesses with the first walk of the new year, starting from Baslow we will first enjoy a warming cup of hot chocolate before setting off with a stroll through the grounds of Chatsworth House by the river before the climb to the Hunting Tower for the views over the house and estate, traversing round through the woods and along Dobb Edge to the gentle climb along Gardom's Edge, crossing to Wellington's Monument before the descent back down Baslow Bar into Baslow for a well-earned drink. Meet at 10:30am for hot choc; Walk starts at 11am Grade: 3; Distance: 7 miles

A slow steady ascent brings us on to Rowless Pastures for a better view of this quirky landscape. The moorland plateau is easily crossed using flag stone paths back to Lockerbrook for a descent back through the forest to Fairholmes. Grade: 2; Distance: 8 miles Please read the Rambles: Essential Information page. Directions: Fairholmes is betwixt Ladybower and Derwent Reservoirs and is reached off the A57 Sheffield to Glossop road; Follow signs towards Glossop and take a turn right at Brown Tourist sign to "Derwent Valley Dams"; this takes you up the left hand side of the reservoir and Fairholmes is "at the end". Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Sat 11th Oct 2014 - Sun 12th Oct 2014 Symonds Yat # 7:30pm meet for 8pm start £52 Member, £59 Guest

Anyone with a sense of adventure will love this brilliant multi activity hike after dark. Let’s hope it’s one of those eerie moonlit nights when the deer are out in force and stars that you can reach out and touch - but whatever happens you can be sure it’ll be one of those Spice experiences which you’ll remember for a long time. After meeting Den from outdoor specialists Forest Adventure, we start with a bracing hike, which includes some navigation tuition. Paths may be discarded as we bash through bush intent on a compass bearing despite any obstacles - so we can play at being Special Forces on manoeuvres in the jungle with a little imagination! If our compass work serves us, we should find a cave system at around 1am. Life inside is a little more 'normal' as darkness is permanent in these fascinating places, and we will light a fire inside to lift the spirits.

Another of Mark's brilliant events that are aimed at those who really want to conquer a challenging outdoor pursuit, but feel the need for some extra 'loving care' and patience to help them meet their ambition. This day is an ideal introduction in an interesting cave system, but one where you have the peace of mind of knowing that you could quickly be brought to the surface if the experience proves too much! So if you've always been a bit wary of taking your first trip underground then this is the event for you. Grade: Easy Directions will be sent out before the day. 26

Saturday 25th October from 9:15am to 5pm Warwick International, Guys Cliff # (CV34 5YD) £175 Member, £185 Guest Spice West Midlands

This is a unique opportunity to learn the ultimate medieval art, with The Knights of Middle England. Our day is run by Karl Ude-Martinez who has over 12 years of experience in performing live jousting shows all over Europe. For obvious safety reasons, we will not be allowed to actually hit each other with our jousts as death often results from that – and such bravery is not deemed culturally appropriate to the modern age! However, they use a quitaine (or dummy) to take the impact. On arrival you will be given a safety briefing and then your riding will be assessed. You will learn basic jousting skills such as hitting the quintaine and learn basic sword and staff fighting. Being a knight also involves being dressed in medieval costume. No real riding experience is needed, but would be an advantage. For safety reasons if the instructor on the day feels your riding is not strong enough for certain tasks, you will make it up in other activities. Reasonable fitness is required as you’ll be in the saddle for most of the day.

Spa 1877 Evening

Ladybower Mountain Bike Ride

Chill out - in the middle of Sheffield

Some of the most spectacular scenery the Peak District has to offer

Date: Place: Meet: Time: Cost:

Saturday 25th October 2014 67 Victoria Street, Sheffield (S3 7QD) In the Spa 6:45pm to 9:30pm £29 Member, £33 Guest

Spa 1877 is housed in one of Sheffield’s major Victorian landmark buildings - the former Glossop Road Swimming Baths. The original baths were built in 1836 for medicinal purposes and were the first public baths in the city. It wasn’t until 1877 that two swimming baths, a hairdresser’s shop and the nationally acclaimed Turkish Baths were opened and were observed as ‘the finest in the kingdom’. This is where Spa 1877 takes its name today. The luxury 21st century spa offering the latest health and beauty treatments in the elegant setting of a spectacularly restored Victorian Turkish Baths. The baths includes use of the following: Aromasteam - Literally clear your head in our aromasteam room where a range of essential oils, such as eucalyptus and peppermint, is used to improve breathing as well as refreshing the spirit and promoting clarity of mind. Hammam - A Hammam is a soft and relaxing heat, unlike the intensity of a sauna and celebrates the ritual of cleansing and relaxation. Many of the original Victorian design features including beautifully glazed brick walls and mosaic floors have been retained and restored. As you sit on heated granite benches, you can feel the stress and strain of everyday life disappear. Steam - Relax and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of steam. Steam baths ease stress, relieve muscle tensions and stiff joints, boost the immune system, stimulate circulation, increase body metabolism, remove toxins from the body and deep-cleanse the skin. Sauna - Fans of the dry heat bath report feelings of peace and contentment as well as physical rejuvenation. Exposure to high heat causes sweating, stimulating the body’s immune system to fight minor illness. It increases circulation to revive tired muscles, detoxify and cleanse the skin. Plunge Pool - There is nothing more invigorating and stimulating than a dip in the plunge pool. Bathing in cold water supercharges the system, improves breathing and muscle tone and reduces fatigue. In addition cold water is also known to stimulate the release of endorphins to give you that feel-good factor. Ice cave - Get that tingle factor as you chill out in the ice cave. Rub ice crystals onto your skin for an exfoliating experience that will really get the circulation going! For people with aching or injured muscles, holding ice on the affected area decreases blood flow to provide immediate pain relief and reduce swelling. Experience Shower - This amazing, multi-colour tropical rain shower is guaranteed to refresh and exhilarate after coming out of the steam rooms or sauna. Choose one of the three settings: a five-jet ‘needle’ shower, power jet or cold blast. As you are blasted by the water, the colours in the room change to give you an unforgettable shower experience. Our session starts at 7pm but you can arrive anytime between 6.45pm & 7pm as you’ll need to complete a medical questionnaire so we don’t clog up the changing rooms! Afterwards we can go for a drink in the nearby Swim Inn.

Thursday 13th November 2014 at 7:10pm Theatre Royal , Drury Lane, Wakefield(WF1 2TE) £12 Member, £13.50 Guest Jonathan Banks on 07969 349714

Join us for the retelling of four episodes from the classic TV series. It's 1917 and Blackadder is now a captain in the British Army at the Front, commanding gallant-but-dumb Lieutenant George St. Barleigh and the even dumber Private Baldrick. Waiting in fear of the dreaded order to go 'over the top' from the patently insane General Melchett, Blackadder devises serial attempts to escape the trenches such as joining the Royal Flying Corps or becoming army entertainers, always with the offer of one of Baldrick's cunning plans. Wakefield Little Theatre presents this poignant and timeless comedy in 2014, the centenary of the beginning of the first World War from the original scripts with paid royalties going to Comic Relief. An opportunity to see live 4 of the 6 episodes, culminating in the most humorous and dramatic end to the series. Please book early. We can only hold theatre tickets for a short time. We have stalls tickets for this performance.

During the tarot reading, Lorna will read your palm to assist in further interpreting your past and future. The reading will last for approximately 45 minutes. The tarot works through synchronicity – in other words, the random pattern in which the cards seem to fall are part of a greater pattern within the cosmic scheme of things. This may seem chaotic to some, but not to those who seek to understand the nature of the causes of things; to those who have learned to look for causes which in turn give rise to those effects. We will send out timeslots to everyone who books this event. If you have a preferred time then please let us know when booking, although we cannot guarantee this.

It could be a climb, a river crossing, an abseil or it could be all three. After seeing Mark Fenton's ability to gently coax even the most frightened, or physically disadvantaged people into achieving brilliant outdoor feats, I started these special sessions which have proved extremely popular! You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all. Mark will get you to overcome any fears by building up your confidence gradually. First we get used to the equipment and how to use it on a few very short descents, before tackling some bigger abseils if you feel able. You’ll not be forced to do anything you are uncomfortable with, or feel stupid if you back out of any stage. So go on…you’ve nothing to lose but your fears!

Highlighted Holidays SKI CHRISTMAS

8 days, Sat 20 Dec 2014 from £889 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh The neighboring resorts of Les Arcs and La Plagne are quintessential examples of the so called “third generation” of modern, high altitude French resorts which burst upon the skiing scene in the early 1960s. Les Arcs offers a wealth of skiing with some exceptional off-piste opportunities. It was considerably more difficult to link these iconic resorts to form ‘Paradiski’ that it was to link Val d’Isère and Tignes: a deep valley divides the neighbouring resorts. Ten years ago, having used enough steel and concrete to build a second Eiffel Tower, a pair of sleek and fast double-decker cable-cars, operating independently of each other, began ferrying skiers two kilometres across the Ponthurin valley between Plan-Peisey (on the Les Arcs side) and a point just above Montchavin in the La Plagne ski network.

SKI NEW YEAR

8 days, Sat 27 Dec 2014 from £999 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester Skiing holidays in Alpe d’Huez offer a high sunny plateau surrounded by an amazing snow bowl, with mile after mile of varied pisted and off piste opportunities. From challenging black runs to wide open blues and greens, the 249km of skiing is spread over a huge area, providing endless opportunities for all levels of skier and boarder. Alpe d’Huez boast excellent snow records due to the high altitude, the Sarenne Glacier and over 800 snow cannons. The Pique Blanc summit at 3300m affords breathtaking views across the whole of the Southern Alps and provides a wonderful starting point for the Sarenne descent - one of the longest black runs in the world at fully 16km from top to bottom! Alpe d’Huez is ideal for snowboarders too, providing 2 well maintained snow parks and plenty of boarder friendly cable-cars and chair lifts.

SKI CORMAYEUR – SOLO WEEK 8 days, Sun 11 Jan 15 from £669 Departs London Gatwick only Not quite a completely sole occupancy week but almost. We have exclusive use of this chalet for a group of just 29 and we have 23 sole occupancy/single rooms available!

MAGICAL MARRAKECH AT CHRISTMAS 5 days, Tue 23 Dec 2014 from £669

Departs London Gatwick & Manchester Get away for Christmas with Spice and join us in the magical, mystical city of Marrakech with accommodation in a luxury riad with pool and spa and including time to explore the Medina and the option to spend a day at the Ourika waterfalls. We visited this Riad in February this year and the feedback was so good we thought it would make an ideal destination for a short break over Christmas. The Riad Maison des Oliviers is a charming Riad set in landscaped gardens overlooking the Atlas Mountains and with an emphasis on tranquility, calm and well-being. An oasis and welcome antidote to the hustle and bustle of the Medina, des Oliviers is a stunning location for our holiday. Situated just 10 minutes from the centre of Marrakech, there is a regular shuttle service and we include our own private minibus for two shopping trips to the souks and two nights out.

Lovely and leisurely with great snow, varied terrain, fabulous scenery and plenty of time for lunch, Courmayeur takes a very Italian approach to skiing. It has an excellent snow record, backed up with a very impressive snow-making system and a very efficient lift system, including a new gondola and a fast four man chairlift. The ski area has a varied selection of easy and intermediate runs liberally sprinkled with welcoming huts, each with its own panoramic sundeck and spectacular view. At the top of the cable car is the nursery area for beginners. For stronger skiers the possibilities are endless, with famous off-piste runs such as the Vallee Blanche into Chamonix, the Toula Glacier in the shadow of Mont Blanc and access to some of the best value heli-skiing in Europe (with a mountain guide). The Vallee Blanche descent into Chamonix is outstanding and one that you’ll never forget.

SKI ITALY - CORTINA 8 days, Sat 31 Jan 15 from £669

Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Bristol Cortina is one of the most filmed, photographed, skied and visited resorts in the Italian Alps. Set to the east of the Sella Ronda circuit, it is called the ‘Queen of the Dolomites’ and is renowned for the excellent selection of skiing as well as superb accommodation, bars, restaurants and shopping. The main skiing areas are the Cortina Cube (Crystal, Faloria and Mietres), Tofana, and Lagazuoi-5 Torri, with plenty of challenging runs as well as some of the most amazing views. All the areas are either linked by the great network of lifts or local skis buses. The Tofanas Ski Area’s accolade is the famous women’s downhill world cup run. Cortina hosts this famous event in January and has done for the past 18 years.

RIO CARNIVAL & IGUASSU FALLS

ARCTIC DOG SLEDDING

5 days, Sun 8 Mar 15 & Sun 29 Mar 15 from £1,699 Departs London Heathrow & Manchester This is an amazing opportunity to get back to nature! We ran this holiday for the first time in March 2014 and the feedback was just superb! The trips are on very limited numbers (just 6 each departure) so not many of you got the chance to experience this holiday. We have two dates available once again and the second one falls in with the Easter break (for the teachers out there!) which does therefore carry a small supplement. Flying into one of Europe’s most Northerly airports you will be collected from the airport and transferred to a local hotel for your first night before taking to your Sled for 3 days of mushing! Our programme includes a welcome briefing and kit check on the evening of the first day, we then go out on the first activity morning for a quick taster ride to make sure that everyone is comfortable with the basics before setting off for three full-on days of mushing. Overnights are spent in comfortable but basic wilderness cabins (most don’t have electricity or running water!).

9 days, Thu 12 Feb 15 from £2,870 Departs London Heathrow only After 6 years we are once again offering Spice members to opportunity to visit Rio at Carnival time and experience the trip of a lifetime! With two options to visit Rio just for the Carnival or extend your stay and visit Iguassu Falls – one of the most aweinspiring sights in South America and a must see for many! The Rio Carnival is considered by many to be the greatest show on earth. What sets the Rio Carnival apart is the parade of the premier samba schools on the Sunday and Monday before lent; while the exuberance of the parade is what strikes most people, there is more to it than meets the eye, as Carnival is, in reality, an industry which employs thousands of people annually and which serves, for many, as a professional apprenticeship. Sandwiched between mountains and ocean, Rio de Janeiro is one of the most vibrant and exotic cities on earth. Carnival in Rio is spectacular. On the Friday before Shrove Tuesday, the mayor of Rio symbolically hands the keys of the city to King Momo, a sequined Lord of Misrule, signifying the start of a 5-day party. Imagination runs riot, social barriers are broken, the main avenues are colorfully lit, full of people, and children wear fancy dress. Special bandstands throughout the city are manned for public street-dancing and organized carnival groups, the “blocos carnavalescos”, are everywhere, dancing, drumming and singing.

Highlighted Holidays

We are exceptionally lucky to have Paul and his experience for this trip as his exceptional knowledge is what will really bring this trip alive! Castilla y Leon covers 20% of Spain and as such is the largest autonomous region in Europe (@95,000Km2). It is always referred to as “monumental”; on the one hand dotted with castles, monasteries, churches, cathedrals and ruins, whilst on the other due to its historical and geographical context, a land of age old history. In contrast our tour starts in Madrid, one of the newest capitals in Europe and also one of the highest. Located right in the centre of the Iberian Peninsular, with hardly a river to speak of, it is just south of the Guadarrama central mountain range 2000 feet up on the meseta, table top plain ideal for cold winters and bleaching summers.

VALENCIA & LA TOMATINA FESTIVAL 5 days, Mon 24 Aug 15 from £649 Departs London Gatwick, Liverpool & Edinburgh

GRANADA & THE FESTIVAL OF CROSSES 4 days, Fri 1 May 15 from £495 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester We ran this weekend for the first time this year and the feedback was so good we had to repeat it! Contrary to its title this is not a deeply religious based holiday; this weekend takes place during “Las Cruces de Mayo”, Granada’s biggest street festival. During “Cruces” the streets of Granada are awash with elaborate flower-adorned crosses, celebrated with dancing, street food and Sangria into the early hours. Las Cruces de Mayo celebrates the triumph of life over death. Each square has amplified music for dancing and every corner of the town is filled with ‘alegría’ well into the small hours in true inimitable Andalucian style. Las Cruces de Mayo finale takes place every year on the 3rd May! Our host for the weekend is Gayle, a who lives in Granada so can give us the benefit of her local knowledge to help get the most from this great weekend.

SPAIN’S HIDDEN TREASURES

La Tomatina also known as The Tomato Festival! Most of us have of it but how about being part of it… Every year in the small Spanish town of Buñol the streets are taken over with this amazing spectacle and run red (literally) with rivers of tomato juice! But what’s it all about - La Tomatina is basically a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. However, since the 2013 event official ticketing was put into place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people and you could be one! Our trip to the festival is a little more civilised however and we have included 4 nights’ accommodation in the historic city of Valencia to make this a truly wonderful breakaway with a difference.

GRAND CANYON RAFTING EXPERIENCE

8 days, Mon 18 May 15 from £769

14 days, Tue 1 Sep 15 from £2,899

Departs London Gatwick, Liverpool & Edinburgh

Departs London Heathrow

Led by our host, the wonderful Paul Richardson this trip promises to be one of discovery and exploration in an incredibly interesting and often overlooked part of Spain.

Possibly the Ultimate Spice Adventure! It has to be the most varied and enjoyable holiday you can imagine. There is the high excitement in running the frequent white water rapids as well as

plenty of time to enjoy the ‘off river’ attractions. The Grand Canyon of the Colorado contains the world’s grandest scenery, a fairy tale backdrop of natural wonders and experiences, thousand feet high gorge rims enclosing wide bands of deep blue sky; shadowed bays, isolated sandy beaches. Bright moon peering over black Canyon walls, tumbling springs and cascading waterfalls, smooth opaque waters and booming rapids - its all here.

Later on, the neighbouring village of Bitez offers a vibrant evening out with its traditional Turkish restaurant. Less than 20 minutes away to the east, Bodrum plays host to a fascinating mix of seafront restaurants and bars.

This 8 day, 288 mile expedition from Lees Ferry to Lake Mead provides one of the most spectacular and enchanting journeys on earth. Some 60 great rapids all of varying degrees of difficulty punctuate the route, although exciting - all easily tackled by the large motorised rafts. The two rafts hold all equipment, 20 Spicers and two guides and can tackle the largest rapids with a margin of passenger safety and comfort. At mile 179 we run Lava Falls - the fiercest rapid on the Colorado and another of the trips many highlights.

THAILAND CHILLOUT & RIVER KWAI 14 days, Mon 12 Oct 15 from £1,499 (£100 price increase on 31 Jan 15) Departs London Heathrow (regional flights may be an option later depending on bookings) Hot of the press - we have just finished confirming this one!

TURKEY CHILLOUT 8 days, Mon 14 Sep 15 from £665 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester

This is an amazing itinerary with a difference – not only will you enjoy exploring many of the capital cities greatest delights from the luxury of your 5 star hotel but then we’ve added a twist as we head to the famous River Kwai where we stay on jungle rafts right on the river! After a few days exploring here it’s back to the lap of luxury and our spa resort in Hua Hin for some rest and relaxation. Individually all exciting places to visit but combined they will quite simply take your breath away.

This trip has been a popular Autumn addition to our holiday programme and it always gets great feedback! Tamarisk Beach Hotel in Ortakent is the perfect holiday location and we should know as we’ve been there for the past 7 years! A relaxed and friendly atmosphere, plenty of activities to keep you busy and a beach shaded by Tamarisk trees on which to relax and watch the world go by.

Boasting one of the largest bays on the Bodrum peninsular, with fantastic wind conditions and a huge sailing area, Ortakent is a great spot to enjoy watersports in Turkey. The typically Turkish village sits inland, away from the coastline, but the idyllic beachfront setting of the Tamarisk Beach Hotel means you’re only a stone’s throw away from the clear warm waters of the Mediterranean. By day, take to the waves and indulge your active side, or kick back and relax along the beachfront.
