BECOME A LIFEGUARD

Bronze Star (Optional) Ages 10-12 The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Medallion (Required) Ages 13+ Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for Assistant Lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. Includes: Lifesaving manual, pocket mask and Whistle, Can be 12 years old if successfully completed Bronze star. 20 Hours

Bronze Cross (Required) Ages 13+ The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as Assistant Lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for National Lifeguard (NL) Required: Lifesaving manual, Pocket mask and Whistle. Can be purchased if needed. 20 hours

National Lifeguard (Required) Ages 15+ The National Lifeguard Pool certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. The National Lifeguard course emphasizes the lifeguarding skills, principles and practices, and the decision-making processes which will assist the lifeguard to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments. 44 hours. EARN HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS

British Columbia and Yukon high school students can use Lifesaving Society certifications for credit toward high school graduation as follows: • Bronze Cross is worth 2 credits for Grade 11. • Bronze Cross and Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) are worth 3 credits for Grade 11. • National Lifeguard Pool option (NL) is worth 2 credits for Grade 12.
