Dyserth Community Day 2015 Dyserth Community day was greeted by warm sunshine and the good folks of Dyserth (and beyond) arrived from when the day started, right to the close late in the evening. It would be an understatement to say that it was anything other than a resounding success. Building on the two previous events and with a helping hand from the weather we couldn’t have asked for more. The hard work of erecting the new marquee, laying out the hall etc. and then taking it all apart on Sunday was all worth the effort of the superb volunteers.

The Dyserth Times Scarecrow competition once again demonstrated how willing folks are to have some fun and add another ingredient into the day. This year our congratulations go to the following entries;

On behalf of The Dyserth Community Hall committee we send you all a massive thank you for making the event such a success. Next years competition will be a “character” from a book or film.

I am conscious that this edition of the magazine does not contain many of the favourites you tell me you like, such as crosswords, Sudoku, historical references etc. I am working hard to try and return to a more balanced magazine, however extra pages cost money and there is much going on which may affect the community. I have to give that the necessary space. Next month I hope to return to what will be a normal service  Richard

www.dyserthchapel.org.uk David Salsbury – Minister of Horeb The highlight of the summer so far was our Garden Party – A Day at the Races, held in the wonderful surroundings of Glan Rafon. The rain held off (just!!) and those who came enjoyed canapés, scones with strawberries and cream, elderflower cordial and of course cups of tea by the dozen! It wasn’t quite Chester Races, but some folk did enjoy a flutter on the horses. Thanks to Dave and Pauline for letting us loose in their garden and to everyone who came and had a good afternoon.

The church had an active presence at the community day on 4 th July, with a display for the Food Coop, Lunch Club and all the other activities that take place in the church. The main activity is, of course, our weekly morning service which takes place at 9.30 on Sundays to which all are welcome. We have a busy Autumn to look forward to with Harvest, Remembrance, and then Advent and Christmas which will come quickly as ever!

Just a reminder that the Community Food Coop, which celebrated its 8 th Birthday in June, continues throughout the summer but the Community Lunch is taking a break in August but will be back on the 9th September.

DYSERTH AND DISTRICT FIELD CLUB First of all apologies for there being no report from the Field Club in the last issue – my fault entirely!. The Summer programme started somewhat unusually with four walks in Rhoscolyn, Dyserth, Plas Power Woods near Wrexham and at Loggerheads. All these were blessed with fine weather and thoroughly enjoyed, particularly that at Plas Power which was new to the Club and included a visit to the most unusual church built for the Fitzhugh family at Bersham.

The first excursion was to Trentham Gardens and Park where the formal gardens were at their best and members completed a guided walk around the mile long lake enlivened with fifteen modern wire sculptures of various fairies. Again the weather was fine except for a very heavy ten minute shower just as we were about to leave, This was followed a fortnight later on 4th July by a visit to Moore Nature Reserve near Warrington where members enjoyed walking to the five lakes along the lanes and in the woods while observing a wide range of wild flowers and birds, once more in perfect weather.

By the time this appears the next excursion to Amlwch will have taken place on 18 th July.

The first stop will be at the Sail Loft café which incorporates a museum dealing with the maritime history. Refreshed in body and mind the party will have moved to the newly built Heritage Centre of the Copper Kingdom nearby where there is a comprehensive display of the industrial history of the area including particularly the copper mining activity on Parys Mountain and its associated works. After a brief tour of the port area guided by a local expert the coach will have taken members back to Parys Mountain for a two hour walk guided by the Club leaders. This will be around the surface remains of what was the largest copper mine in the world in the latter part of the eighteenth century.

The remaining summer events will consist of a walk in the Conway area, an excursion to Macclesfield with its silk industry, a riverside walk in St Asaph, an excursion to the Ellesmere Port Waterways museum and the Anderton Lift and finally a walk along part of the Sandstone Trail at Beeston and Peckforton.

Everyone will be welcome at these events and full details can be seen by clicking ‘Organisations’ on the Dyserth website. New members will be very welcome - come along for a trial visit - the walks are free and the excursion good value!.

Pots of Money Now you thought I was joking about our greenhouse! Well I'm happy to report that management raised ÂŁ388 for her plants (at 3 for ÂŁ1 you work it out). Add to that the few trays we passed on to other worthy causes and the total number of pots (most with multiple plants) exceeded 1200 - that's an awful lot of dibbing. I am pleased to pass on an official "Thank You" to my lady wife for all her hard work - oh and an unofficial one from me for clearing the greenhouse ...............ready for next year?

Talking of record numbers, I hear the shop is hoping to exceed last year's record which is all down to all of you who generously spend your money and, of course, our wonderful volunteers without whom the shop could not exist.

Sadly, a few weeks back someone stole a coffee table from outside the shop. Just how low can you stoop? Anyway the thief has now been identified, so before the police are officially involved, can I ask the "perp" to simply return it to the shop - no questions asked. We're less interested in your criminal record than in helping our children.

Rebecca.Evans@nthwales.pnn.police.uk Following recent incidents reported in the village I have visited a number of addresses to offer crime prevention advice such as how you can register and mark your property.

Immobilise is an initiative which is aimed at helping to reunite owners with lost or stolen property and is the world’s largest free register of possession ownership details. These details are searchable by all UK police forces and form an extremely powerful tool in helping to identify and return recovered, lost or stolen property to its rightful owner.

You can also register bicycles and jewellery alongside other valuable items such as IPads, laptops and other electrical items on the database and upload a picture to help distinguish it from any other property. Property can be registered for free at www.immobilise.com I am also aware residents are concerned following recent circulation on social media relating to chalk marks found on properties with dogs. If you do find any marks please photograph them and contact police on 101 who are collating information in relation to the marks before wiping the mark off.

Dyserth Women's Institute At our May meeting (13th) we debated the Centenary resolution. This year’s resolution is: Failing to care – assessment of need in long-term care. The W.I. calls on HM government to remove the distinction between nursing care and personal care in the assessment of the needs of individuals, in order to advance health and wellbeing. A show of hands demonstrated that Dyserth was overwhelmingly in favour of the resolution although concerns were raised regarding the robustness of funding for both health and social care services.

After the serious debate the mood was lightened by the President [Mrs Anne Sanderson] regaling us with tales of her varied successful careers as shop assistant, model, housekeeper and cook and area manager for Weight Watchers. All of this information was imparted in a light-hearted style that had members in peals of laughter.

The Offa Group Annual General Meeting was held on the 20th May where, along with Gronant, Bagillt, Llanasa and Oakenholt/Flint institutes enjoyed the entertainment for the evening, the award winning Dee-Sign Choir. The Director of the choir, Ms Anne Hesketh, outlined the aims of the choir. Dee-Sign Choir is a choir that performs music in British Sign Language [BSL]. BSL is the official language of Deaf people in the U.K. The choir translates the words of many popular songs into BSL and then performs them. The name of the choir is a combination of the river Dee and what they do best, sign! The aims of Dee-Sign are to promote Deaf Awareness and the beauty of BSL, to fund raise for Deaf people in Chester and district and to increase the vocabulary of BSL students; helping them to further their studies.

The choir is made up of people from lots of different backgrounds. Some members have just started to learn BSL, some have been using it all their lives. The choir is open to everyone; Deaf, hearing and hard of hearing. In addition to being entertained with a wide range of music, Offa Group members were enabled to join in the chorus of ‘Kiss Me Honey, Honey – Kiss Me’ after being given the opportunity to practice some basic BSL signs. Members were given a round of applause by the choir!

What a great day 6 members had on the 4th June at Theatr Clwyd joining other Clwyd/ Flint members to watch the live stream of the Centenary Annual General Meeting from the Royal Albert Hall. With the lights turned down low it was almost possible to pretend that we were actually in the Hall singing Jerusalem along with the thousands of women lucky enough to attend in person.

We heard inspirational speakers like para olympian, Dame Tanni Grey- Thompson, historian and television presenter Lucy Worsley and CEO of Newton Investment Management, founder of the 30% Club [founded to increase the number of women board members] and mother of 9 [yes 9] Helena Morrisey.

The royalists amongst us were able to see and hear the Queen formally open the meeting and the Princess Royal and the Countess of Wessex joining in with our rendition of Jerusalem. All the royal visitors were presented with beautiful posies by W.I. granddaughters [containing blooms form the Centenary Rosebush] and their own personal editions of the W.I. Centenary CookBook. Dyserth Christmas Lights Dyserth Community Council would like to have the residents’ opinion on the Christmas lights. There has been mixed opinions for a long time and we would like to inform the community about the current costs in place and the cost of replacing the lights on the lamp post known as “Pole Mounts”.

As a Community Council each year we install and remove the pole mounts and install four Christmas trees with lights and the cost of this along with the electricity comes to £2,073.00 (this does not include the cost of purchasing the Christmas trees)

We currently have 14 Pole mounted Christmas lights along the High Street from the Crossroads to Hiraddug Road as some are now broken and too costly to repair. To update the lights to a new style and more energy efficient LED systems is a costly process and listed below are a few examples of how we could implement them into Dyserth.

Option 1 Buy 14 New LED Pole Mounts at a total cost of £4,262.00 + vat Option 2 Lease New LED Pole Mounts from a specialist lighting company for a period of 3 years at a cost of £1,545.60 + vat per year.

Option 3 Replace current Pole Mounts with New LED Pole Mounts on an as and when basis creating a mixed theme at a cost of £294.00 + vat per Pole Mount.

Option 4 Continue with current Pole Mounts with no change. **Please note that installation cost of £2,073.00 will need to be added to each option** If you would be so kind as to have a think about the options listed above and please make your comments and preferred option known cut-out sheet below.

St Bridget's Parish Church.

On July 19th we had a parish lunch at Faenol Fawr to celebrate the 40 th year of the ordination of Robert, our parish priest. This followed his preaching in the cathedral at which a goodly number of our parishioners attended.

On Monday, August 3rd to Friday, August 7th there will be a Bric a Brac sale in the Church Hall in the Waterfall Gardens. This will be repeated on three days at the end of August (Saturday, 29th to Monday, 31st ). On the latter occasion teas will Teas be served.

It is hoped to arrange a Safari Supper in early September and the ever-popular Christmas Fair will be on the 14th of November (early notice for present hunters).

Four Easy Back Pain Remedies Many people are looking for easy back pain remedies, but it is hard for some patients to find what works for them, as both management and treatment depend on their history as well as the type and severity of their pain.

If you are suffering from backaches, here are four tips that will help relieve your symptoms and make your daily activities less troublesome and more enjoyable.

Back Pain Remedies 1. Avoid being sedentary Wanting to stay in bed when you’re having back pain is understandable but prolonged inactivity can delay or even worsen your symptoms. Staying active is often the best way to manage back pain. Simple exercises like walking and doing low-impact exercises can help a great deal as it helps bring oxygen to the soft tissues, which can help in reducing the symptoms. Stretching can also help. However, you should know your limits and avoid strenuous activities. Over-exercising can exacerbate back pain.

You can also try different movement therapies such as yoga, Pilates, or tai chi.

2. Release endorphins Other than exercising, there are other ways to release endorphins. Acupuncture, deep breathing, eating dark chocolate, getting a massage, laughing (or even smiling), listening to your favourite music, and meditation are among them.

3. Cold and/or heat therapy Putting a cold and/or hot pack on the affected area can help a great deal in relieving your pain.

Cold packs reduce inflammation. They also prevent spasms by slowing down the nerve impulses, so it acts like a local anaesthetic. Remember not to put ice directly on the skin (wrap it in a towel) to avoid ice burns. A cold pack should not be applied for more than 20 minutes at a time.

Hot packs stimulates the blood flow and help to stretch the soft tissues around the spine, which can increase flexibility and reduce stiffness.

4. Get chiropractic care Chiropractic treatment is one of the most effective ways to treat back pain using hands-on spinal adjustments. It is important to have yourself checked by a chiropractor as they can recommend a back pain programme that is right for your symptoms.

Councillor David Parry has been re-elected as Chairman of Dyserth Community Council for a second year term of office. Councillor James Williams has been elected as Vice Chair of the Council. Councillor Parry thanked his colleague Councillors for the privilege in being elected for a second occasion, and congratulated James upon his appointment as Vice Chair. Councillor Parry also thanked Councillor Glenn Jones for his year as Vice Chair.

Pat Johnson - thank you: The Community Council Councillors’ were saddened to receive the resignation from Pat Johnson - the lady who collected the litter and generally kept the streets, play areas and playing field free from litter and other substances ! The Councillors’ wish to take this opportunity, to thank Pat for her service to the Community of Dyserth which has been appreciated, not only by the Councillors, but the residents as well.

Flower Planters: The Community Council allocate funding of just over £1,000.00, each year to provide the flower planters. The money is spent on collection & returning the planters from Aberwheeler Nurseries, filling with compost, together with the planting scheme of flowers. Unfortunately, from this summer Denbighshire County Council, will not be supplying the larger flower planters in Dyserth or elsewhere throughout the County.

In fact, the County has deleted their budget completely from this year. Dyserth Community Council intend to continue with a larger display of flower planters. To achieve this the Chairman Councillor David Parry, together with Councillor Mrs. Margaret Williams, have approached the various local businesses - seeking financial assistance / sponsorship toward the planters. The Community Council have been overwhelmed with the generosity of financial assistance received from the following businesses, which will ensure that Dyserth is enhanced with a cascade of flowers throughout this summer: Mr. Anthony Mark Collins, Dyserth Butchers / Mr. Peter Morgan, The Pharmacy / Mr. Derek Coulton, The Bodunig Inn / Dyserth Waterfall Committee / Mrs. Michelle Higginson, Voel Coaches / Mr. Abdul H. Did you know - both the Red Dog Bins and the Black Waste Bins can be used for Dog Waste: .

The Councils contractor who empties the dog waste bins for the Community Council, has advised that a number of red dog bins are extremely full on occasions. A number of the red bins are sited near to a black general waste bin. The black bins can also be used for the deposit of dog waste. So please, if you pass the black bin first, or notice the red bin full - please use the black bin - thank you.

Installation on Disabled Swing:

Readers will re-call that in a previous report in the Dyserth Times, it was reported that the Community Council were installing a suitable swing, which can be used by disabled children, together with their parents, carers - and also be used by children in general. Unfortunately, due to not one, but a number of ‘glitches’ which has resulted in the delay in the completion of the installation. However, and hopefully, by the time the Dyserth Times is published, the swing with be available for the children.

Complaints: During the course of the last few months, the Community Council have received numerous complaints from residents. The complaints cover an abundance of issues from overgrown tree branches, footpaths that require attention, speeding traffic and lorries not complying with the weight limit, street lighting concerns, fly tipping, road name plates, grit bins, and others.

The Community Council are working with the Denbighshire County Council and the North Wales Police to address the issues.

The food and company were as usual, top flight, thanks to Sally Evans and Jane who did us proud.

Our next event is our annual Afternoon Tea, which will have been held by the time this is published, in fact it is coming ever closer, 18 July to be precise. I hope we will have had the pleasure of your company again.

The month of August is a time of holidays, so we will take a break and resume in September/October.I wish you all a very happy and hopefully sunny summer and many thanks for all your support.

DYSERTH BOWLING CLUB JULY 2015.

Strengthened by a number of new members our results have, so far, been very pleasing. In the North Wales Coast Bowling League Dyserth ’A’, under the captaincy of Hefin Cunnah, is in eighth position with fifty five points. Christopher Jones heads the team averages having won eight of the eleven games he has played so far this season.

The Ladies Team, playing in the mid-week Bowling League, under the captaincy of Carol Barrodale is in seventh position having won seven of the thirteen games played. In the League averages Gaynor White is lying in sixth place overall.

The Clwydian League Senior Citizens ‘A’ Team under the captaincy of Ann Hindle, has had a particularly good start having won nine of the twelve games played so far and are lying in second position. In the League averages Mike Barrodale is in eighth place with Clive Petty in thirteenth position.

Senior Citizens ‘B’ team has also been successful so far. Under the leadership of Alan Jones, it is in top position in their League having won nine of the ten games played. In the League averages Tommy Williams is in ninth place.

In the Vale of Clwyd League Dyserth’s ‘A’ team, with Nick Evans as captain, is lying in third position having won seven of their ten games. Chris. Jones leads the division averages in eighth place with Nick Evans lying in thirteenth place. Dyserth’s ‘B’ team with Dave Jagger as captain, are lying in fifth position. Tommy Williams and John Bass leading the team averages.

In addition Dyserth have achieved some success in the Pairs competition. Tommy Williams and John Bass winning the Clwydian Senior Citizens League C and D Pairs.

In June, Dyserth hosted two Open Competitions. The first, on Sunday 14 th June, being the Gethin Cunnah Pairs, with 28 pairs taking part. Once again Ian Pimlott partnered by Barry Twamley ended runners-up losing 21-15 to Nick Hughes and Craig Richardson in what proved to be an exciting and entertaining game.

The following Sunday, the 21st June, the Emrys Cunnah Singles took place. There were 28 entries. The final resulted in a win by Paul Welburn (Abergele) who beat Chris Jones (Highbury) again by 21 points to 15 in an extremely competitive game.

On Friday 10th July, in the Senior Citizens’ B Division Cup, Dyserth ‘A’ beat Old Colwyn ‘A’ and will play Vardre ‘A’ in the final on August 14 th ; and in the Senior Citizens’ D Division Cup, Dyserth ‘B’ beat Llysfaen ‘B’ and will now play either Abergele ‘C’ or East Parade ‘C’ in the final on July 24th.

Dyserth Junior Football Committee has applied for an extension to be added to the Sports Pavilion so that changing facilities can be provided for the various Junior Teams. The Bowling Club wishes the Junior Soccer Committee every success in this venture and hopes that their application is successful. D.J.

Dyserth Junior Football Club Since the last issue of the Times we have seen the sun set on one season and we are now seeing the dawn break on a new one. Although, it will not be until the children are back in school in September that the main season will start.

For our ‘Funday & Presentation Day’ on Sunday 14th June, which was held on the football field and Ysgol Hiraddug school field, we had to divide our teams into 4 age groups. Each age group had 4 or 5 small sided teams arranged and all played against each other for a winner’s medal. The matches were numerous with some entertaining football being played with great sportsmanship. The weather was ideal and allowed the presentations for the small tournaments and those for the overall season to be done outdoors on the field. Each player was presented with a memento for the season and there were are also some individual awards of trophies for players in each team and this season’s winners were; Dyserth u7s

The Ti a Fi Playgroup The Ti a Fi playgroup is based at the Dyserth Community Centre, Cwm Road, and is a great service for all pre-school children from birth onwards. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday between 9.15am and 11.15am. Parents and Carers are invited to come along and relax in an informal atmosphere, where their little ones are free to play with any of the toys on offer, as well as indulging in creative craft wherever possible.

Proposed Development of 99 Houses - Public Meeting.

An open meeting took place at the Community Hall on Friday, 10th July to discuss the impact of the possible building of 99 houses, chaired by Ann Jones AM. Repre-

sentatives present were David Parry (Chair of Community Council), Barbara Smith (Councillor for Cwm, Tremeirchion and Bodfari), Wes Price (Spokesperson for Don't Destroy Dyserth), Peter Owen (Councillor for Dyserth).

Ann Jones AM will represented the village at a meeting scheduled on Wednesday

15th July. This meeting is not to discuss a planning proposal, but for the Council to move along the planning consultation period. That period is usually 8 weeks, it would be helpful if it could be extended. As Denbighshire County Council does not meet in August, this would give residents valuable extra time to have input and not just rely on the DCC website. Much more on this issue in the coming months.

Dyserth Women’s Institute….continued from page 9 Our June meeting (10th) saw the return of Chester tour guide Mr Tom Jones who took us on a Chester Ghost Trail. We also heard from our President, Mrs Anne Sanderson, of her day at Buckingham Palace at the W.I. Centenary Tea Party.

In July members enjoyed Tales from Wales [and other places] from our guest speaker, Mellt the Story Teller and our trip to Venue Cymru to see Anne, The Musical. This year’s educational trip will take place in July we are visiting Saltaire in West Yorkshire.

We were pleased to take part in the Dyserth Community Day on the 4 th.We had a colourful stall highlighting the benefits of joining the W.I. and also sharing photographs of some of our past activities. As this is our centenary year we were honoured to be asked to open the event. Sadly, Wendy W.I.–Fi, our scarecrow did not win the competition despite braving the wind and the rain – we loved her anyway!

We are now on our summer break and so there is no August meeting but we are not relaxing too much with a Coffee Morning at the Nant Hall Presbyterian Church on Friday, 24th July. Our next meeting will take place on 9th September when Mrs Joan Williams will address us on the life and times of Emmeline Pankhurst.

If you would like to join us, you are welcome to attend any of our meetings on the second Wednesday of every month [except August] in Paterson Hall, behind the chapel in the High Street. Meetings begin at 7.30 pm.

This is based in the Paterson Hall at Dyserth Chapel. Anyone can become a member, free. Fruit, vegetables and salad are supplied in £6, £4 and £2 bags; and a mixed bag is available at £6 or £4, a good value stew pack at £1.50. Everything is very fresh and very good value. Also available every week are loose bananas, jacket potatoes and other occasional items such as large mushrooms, oranges, grapefruit etc. Tea and coffee are always available too.

We support unpaid Carers in Denbighshire, we provide services such as; support groups, access to grants, First aid and manual handling training, social events, carer needs assessments and much more. Don’t Destroy Dyserth from Heather Prydderth & Michelle Higginson We have made a claim for additional Rights of Way over the fields to be developed with the assistance of The Ramblers Association. The footpaths are shown on the attached map (Page 28). We would like to request a phone call to Heather on 570214 or e mail if anyone can confirm that they, or anyone else they know, have walked across these fields. As the paths run from the old playground behind Maes Glas to the lower playing field and stream, and footballers used the paths to get to the football pitch by the sewage works, people have told us already that they used them but we need more people to confirm this, the longer ago the better.

We also want to know if anyone has, or knows anyone who has, used the fields for community activities such as ; children playing, dog walking, people walking, team games, picking blackberries or anything else, football, cricket, bird watching, picnicking, kite flying, sledging in winter, metal detecting, bike riding, hunting for rabbits, drawing and painting, camping and anything else over the past 20 years without anybody stopping the activity.

As this maybe the last year the fields can be accessed by the public to enjoy the views and wildlife and any of the above activities we hope people do take the ty to walk the paths and enjoy it. "There will be a second public meeting about housing developments in Dyserth on Friday 11th September. DDD will also be organising a Rambling Day - please watch for posters in the village."
