A Chill in the air!

I suppose we all knew that our excellent mild autumn so far would soon become a memory and now winter is almost upon us. Some of us are wondering what it may bring this year, it certainly can’t bring a winter like last year, or can it? I am of course writing this a few weeks before this copy is distributed, but what we all know is that whether it be mild or freezing it’s going to be expensive. Like most of us I derive no warm feeling from knowing that the energy suppliers will once again make extraordinary profits from our wallets and purses. However, there it is and little that we can do except consider how we can save a few bob and yet still stay warm. Personally and not intending to be political, I think all energy should be re-nationalised. After a 30 year career in the UK gas industry I both resented and was appalled by the wholesale disposal of our energy utilities. However, what’s done is done and there’s little point in thinking that can change, despite the fragility of our UK supplies.

The biggest problem we have in our village is our dependence on either oil and/or electricity or LPG for keeping us warm. The best we can do is ensure where possible we are energy efficient. There are lots of useful web based resources and at the foot of this piece there are some useful links and telephone numbers.

So, some suggestions to consider. For those who heat their homes with oil it’s very important to preserve the oil in our tanks for as long as possible as the winter sees prices rise. Fill early and shop around to get the best price. I recommend using our local oil retailers, but it’s essential that one keeps an eye on rising prices. One way of doing this is to access www.boilerjuice.com and check prices on the day. There is no commitment to buy, but it is a useful guide which also helps with budgeting.

One suggestion to reduce energy costs is to set the thermostat to a comfortable setting, 9-12º C (48-54ºf) is too cold and may lead to hyperthermia. 15ºC (60ºf) is still too cold and the thermostat should be turned up. The Safe Zone is 18 - 21ºC (65-70ºf) and 24-27ºC (75-80ºf) is too hot. Wearing extra layers can enable a reduction in the room temperature setting. Most importantly if you know of, or have an elderly neighbour who may not have central heating or even is unsure on how to maintain a suitable temperature if they do, pop in and just check they’re ok. Those who haven’t got central heating and are limited to single source heating such as an electric fire or a wood fire may appreciate a friendly call to ensure they are keeping warm.

Dyserth Community Hall—Friends and Events.

In 1998 National Lottery funding was used to rebuild and refurbish the old Urdd Hall on Cwm Road. The new building renamed “Dyserth Community Hall” was designed to improve the lives of all the community by providing a facility where educational, vocational and recreational activities could take place.

Today the Hall is still going strong, a testimony to the hard work of a relatively small group of volunteers who have run the Hall on behalf of the community for over 15 years. To ensure the smooth running of the Hall regular meetings are held by the Community Hall Committee. It was one of these meetings, in the Spring of this year, which brought together the Hall Committee, hall users and a number of representatives of local sports, children’s and social groups (including Dyserth Times !!!). The result of this meeting was a mandate to showcase the Community Hall, promote groups and classes using the hall and to bring together the vast number of groups already active within the village. The rest, as they say is history, as 3 months later on Saturday September 14th Dyserth had its first Community Day. Throughout the process of organising the Community Day many people recognised the hard work of the Hall Committee and offered their support in the future. A subcommittee or as we prefer to call ourselves “Friends and Events” was subsequently formed to assist the Community Hall Committee. At the last meeting Dyserth Community Councillor Glenn Jones was elected as Chair. The primary aims of this group are: “Friends” – to assist in the general maintenance of the Hall where possible e.g. grass cutting, general repairs, painting etc.

“Events” – to organise events, such as the Community Day, designed for enjoyment and participation of the whole community.

Where possible, to raise funds for the long term maintenance of the Hall e.g. roof repairs, new utensils, wi-fi etc. which the Hall hire costs do not cover.

Working in the Hall for the last few months, “Friends and Events” have recognised the need to replace the Community Hall kitchen. Our aim between now and the end of 2014 is to raise funds to support this objective. A number of events have been arranged: February 14th 2014 Children’s Valentine’s disco.

February 15th 2014 Valentine’s meal and Quiz.

July 19th 2014 Community Day 2 (including results of Scarecrow competition - you read it here first !!)

October 19th 2014 Dyserth Run. November 29th 2014 Christmas Community Extravaganza.

HOREB UNITED REFORMED CHURCH, DYSERTH. David Salsbury – Minister of Horeb For further information about events and services taking place at Horeb and details of other activities in Patterson Hall, please visit our website www.dyserthchapel.org.uk For about eight years Horeb has supported the Night Shelter in Rhyl with gifts of food from our Harvest Services as well as throughout the year. When we held our Harvest Supper at the end of September we invited Liz and Pam from the shelter to tell us more about the work they do and the challenges they face in continuing to provide this vital service to some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

They told us that the picture is bleak, with Rhyl being the only night shelter left along the North Wales coast. It too is struggling after an £80,000 funding cut, due to the cessation of Housing Benefit income because of the recent benefit changes.

They described the plight of men, and a few women, some as young as eighteen, with multiple problems of drugs, alcohol, mental illness, relationship breakdown and many who had lost their homes. With the coldest weather almost upon us the needs of these people will be at their greatest so we promised to continue with our support and prayers and to try and raise awareness in our community of the challenges they face.

As we enter December we begin a busy time in the life of the church. We have our Lunchtime Fair on the 7th with cakes, gifts, refreshments and other goods on sale.

The day after, on the 8th there will be a Christingle Service at 3pm to get you into the Christmas spirit. Then beginning on Sunday 22nd we have a few days of services as we celebrate Christmas together. Everyone is welcome to all of these events and services – hope you might be able to join us for some of them.

Horeb United Reformed Church Regular Sunday Morning Worship takes place each week at 9.30am.

The Community Food Coop is open weekly on Wednesday mornings, 10am 1pm.

POLICING DYSERTH. PCSO 3329 Rebecca Evans Mobile – 07880156899 Rebecca.Evans@nthwales.pnn.police.uk This winter I was successful in gaining £200 of funding under operation BANG which encourages young people to take part in activities in their communities around the Halloween and Bonfire night period in a safe and fun environment . The funding was made available from the Arson Reduction Team, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and North Wales Police in partnership with the Police and Community Trust.

The funding, which was given to Dyserth Youth Club allowed them to conduct an arts and crafts session which included pumpkin carving and a poster competition along with a Halloween party. A great time was had by all!!

As the winter months are now here could I please remind fuel tank owners to protect themselves against oil thieves by checking the amount of oil in the tank regularly. It is possible to place an alarm on the tank and also purchase a device which is kept inside the home which shows the level of oil in the tank. If possible site the tank so that it is visible from the house and not visible from the road. Be vigilant of any unusual vehicles parked close to homes or gardens and always report any evidence of theft or attempted theft to the police.

Now that the clocks have gone back and it is getting dark earlier why not think about increasing your home security. Is the area surrounding your home covered by security lighting? If not why not think about installing dusk until dawn lights or sensor lights which are immediately activated. Shut and lock all windows and doors when you leave the house or go to bed. In addition to this please ensure shed doors and any outbuildings are secured with chains or padlocks. Ensure valuable items such as tools, ladders and bikes are not left on view.

Throughout December I will be holding a number of police surgeries where I will be on hand to offer crime prevention advice and information and answer any queries you may have. Details of which will be published on the North Wales Police website and at various locations in the village.

A cup of coffee and a chat with a wonderful Lady!

I was lucky enough to receive a phone call from Mrs Glenys Hudson Barker who is believed to be the oldest living resident of Dyserth, being born in the village and lived in the same house from birth until today. We found ourselves in her beautiful home sharing her memories of Dyserth and what memories they are. At 91 Glenys is almost totally self sufficient and talked to us about how life has changed in the village since the early part of the 20th Century.

Glenys is 92 in January. Her Grandparents lived next door, they had 14 children and she had two sisters. Glenys was a dressmaker and spent much time unpicking tweed for Lady Mainwaring of St Asaph. We learned about walking to school via the old Penisa bridge to the Old School House (now a private dwelling). Glenys told us “the area surrounding Waterfall Road was always flooding”. Also, about the 3 thatched cottages and we believe they must have been where we now live in Rhodfa Gofer, then known as Gofer Lane. Glenys’s parents met in Llandudno in the First World War, A funny story she told was about how she used to repair shirts for the Admiral who lived at Dyserth Hall. He used to wear Viyella shirts and wear the collars out, but Glenys could fix this! She cut a section out of the shirt tail and made a new collar.

Some weeks later when visiting Bodrhyddan Hall the Admiral was having tea in the garden with others and as she passed she asked “were you pleased with the collar”, he replied, “delighted, but now my backside is cold”!

The Prestatyn Weekly.

Saturday, March 28th 1908.

Imprisoned for theft.

At Prestatyn Magistrates on Wednesday, before Mr Thos, Jones (in the chair), Mr Scott and Mr T Williams, Richard Taylor a travelling gipsy, was charged by P.C. Roberts with the larceny of a horses girth band from the stables of the Crown Inn, Newmarket on Friday afternoon, the property of Mr R Davies. The prisoner made a rambling statement that the donkey had followed him to the Crown Inn Stables and he knew nothing of the girth band until he found it around the donkey's neck at the camp the next morning. The chairman of the bench humorously suggested that the wrong prisoner had been brought to court and the Magistrates Clerk (Mr Gamlin) remarked that the donkey ought to be in a circus, for they were asked to believe that the animal had got into the stable and twisted the girth around its neck. Taylor was sent to prison for 14 days.

So, thank you Glenys for sharing your memories and of course for the coffee and biscuits. Hilary and I can only hope to have the same power of memory in our old age!

The other Macmillan coffee morning.

The friends and neighbours who kindly contributed to our home coffee morning on Friday 27th September raised £80 for Macmillan. Raffle prizes were won by Gary, Sue W, Karen, Jean, Sian and Sian’s friend.

We were able to give (most of!) half a dozen cakes towards the Paterson Hall coffee morning on the Saturday.

NATURE CORNER. As I mentioned earlier in “Chill in the air” the weather is turning colder as autumn grips and the nights lengthen. This is a doubled edged sword as far as birds are concerned and certainly from my point of view.

On one hand, immigrant birds are arriving giving us an opportunity to see many species that we don’t see in our summer. Those geese that don’t summer here have been flying over and I counted 122 in one “Skein” (collective name for geese in flight as opposed to a “flock” when on the ground). Whether they were Greylag, Canada, Pink Footed etc. I don’t know as they were silhouetted in the dawn sky. Also, I spotted many Swans (called either a “Wedge” or “Flock “when in flight), either Whooper, Mute or Bewick, once again I don’t know. Many will be arriving later as until now the winds are too mild, but when the Arctic and Siberian winter hits they will arrive. Plenty of berries, so early December should see the Waxwing’s arrive again. Last year at the Rhuddlan reserve they were feeding in rows on the berries. One of my favourite birds.

On the other hand as the ground becomes harder the small birds such as Great and Blue Tits, Starlings (arriving now from warmer climes), Sparrows, Chaffinch, etc. etc. will have a hard time finding food. If there is any spare cash, after struggling to pay the inflated energy bills, Finches love Nyger seeds, peanuts for the Woodpeckers, Siskin’s, Nuthatch and Coal Tits. Sunflower Seeds are a favourite of nearly all the species, but the big winner are fat balls. However, the fat balls are often bought in plastic netting. Please remove it if putting in a feeder as they can get caught up and sometimes can’t escape. The birds need our help to survive the winter, especially if it’s going to be as hard as the last one. Give it a try and enjoy the vast range that will come to your garden.

DYSERTH AND DISTRICT FIELD CLUB The club’s summer programme came to an end with a very enjoyable walk at Rhewl in excellent weather, first through fields and woods and then returning alongside the river Clywedog. This should have been followed two weeks later by an excursion by coach to Portmeirion but, sadly, this had to be cancelled because insufficient numbers had booked to make the event viable. To help to avoid such cancellations in future please note that members’ guests and friends are welcome to join all our events.

The winter programme got under way in mid-October with a fascinating talk about the Pensychnant Conservation Centre and Nature Reserve by the warden who detailed its history and the great range of its wildlife, some of which is rare and indeed some only found there. The Club will be visiting the reserve for a guided walk some time in 2014.

The next event was a walk in an unfamiliar location in the Afon Cwm Penamnen valley near Dolwyddelan. Despite indifferent weather members enjoyed views of Snowdonia, archaeological sites, waterfalls and of course the flora and fauna.

This year is the 50th Anniversary the North Wales Wildlife Trust and some members of the Field Club were instrumental in its founding so it was very appropriate that an excellent lecture describing its history and present activities was given on the 9 th November by one of the staff. From small beginnings it now owns 33 wildlife reserves in the area, with several paid staff and many volunteers from among its over 5000 members.

It cooperates with numerous organisations and is now very influential in wildlife matters including conservation, education and campaigning as well as a lot of practical work.

By the time this report appears the Club will have had a guided visit to the new Pont y Draig bridge at Rhyl and an exploration of the rearranged Horton’s Nose area. This will be followed by a lecture about the Roman Baths at Prestatyn by Fiona Gale, County Archaeologist supported by Fred Hobbs who was involved in the excavations many years ago. Please note that this will be in the Hall of the Church of The Holy Spirit, Prestatyn.

After Christmas a stroll along the banks of the Clwyd will end the year and then in January there will be an afternoon of talks by members. The AGM and Social Afternoon will take place on 25th January in Trinity Church Hall, Prestatyn.

All are welcome at these events, sometimes with a small charge for non- members.

Too much for any one person.

It’s wet and windy and becoming increasingly cold, yet a lone figure is seen walking the old railway busy collecting other folks rubbish. This is no mean feat as it seems Dyserth is fast becoming a dirty place to live with the detritus of everyday life which appears in ever increasing quantities in our village.

Pat, does not grumble or moan, but if I were her I'd become understandably disheartened with a situation which is wholly avoidable. For example, everyday new acts of wanton selfishness and a total lack of consideration appear, which seem to beggar believe. Recently, dog faeces were found on a bench on the railway line, see the picture and although I fought to prevent myself from clearly showing the offending mess, I did not succumb and make no apologies for those of a tender disposition. We can't do more than we already do apart from continuing to appeal to the minority to tidy up their mess, but we can do something about litter.

There are others who we should thank for keeping the village itself tidy and I am asking for the help of all like minded folks who enjoy walking the Dyserth to Prestatyn walk as far as the Dyserth Falls Resort.

Perhaps this is a good time to raise this issue as a new year approaches and perhaps we are all a bit weak at maintaining our new year resolutions, however this is one that would benefit everybody. I am proposing that hopefully every few months volunteers meet at Anglia Car Park and we all spend a few hours removing the litter.

We will provide litter picking tools, gloves and bin bags for those who can join in. We can walk the railway path to the Dyserth Falls Resort and include the Hiraddug Nature Reserve, which as you all know is an SSSI site. (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and the new woodland paths specially created for our pleasure.

Here is another picture that shows what we are trying to prevent. This picture shows the rubbish collected by Pat on a single pick from Ghost Canyon alone!

This is not the first time that such an initiative has been tried and the Dyserth Environmental Group led the way but for various reasons, mostly due to a lack of volunteers, it needs a boost to get things happening again. I am hoping, with the support of The Dyserth Environmental Group, the North Wales Wildlife Trust, Keep Wales Tidy and Denbighshire County Council, to make a difference and with your support we can all make this possible. Watch this space for more information in the next edition, but in the meantime please take your litter home.

Dyserth Junior Football Club - Press Release No.35 – 11th November 2013 David Griffith Good tidings to all of you and all the best for Christmas and The New Year.

It’s been a busy period for us at Dyserth JFC in the first few weeks of the season. We reported in the last edition of the Times that we had 6 teams kicking off the season. Well that has now increased. We had been trying to put together an u12s team for this season but

unfortunately we only had about 7 players from Dyserth and with a minimum of 14 required for a squad it didn’t look good. The boys wanted to stay and play in Dyserth rather than go elsewhere so we tried hard to recruit some additional players. After 2 or 3 attempts and after the season had kicked off we had some good news for the boys.

Not only had we found the players but a manager and an assistant who were prepared to coach and look after them. A late application was made to the Rhyl and District League and they were formally accepted and the fixtures adjusted accordingly.

They kicked off their season on 19th October at Coronation Gardens, Rhyl and gave a very creditable performance against a wellestablished Hearts Milan team, scoring 3 goals in the process. We wish the boys all the best for the rest of the season and beyond.

Dyserth Devils u12s sponsored by UC Beds Since our inception in 2007 we have only been able to cater for age groups starting at u10s. We are asked every year by parents whether their children can play football for Dyserth but due to a shortage of volunteers we have had to turn them away when we find out that they are 8 years old or younger. This season we took the decision ‘to take the plunge’ and try and provide football for these younger age groups and asked any that were interested to come along to a training night. We were surprised by the numbers that came. More than enough for an u8s and an u7s team! Fortunately, along with the children came some willing parents to help out with the club. Without such people we could not provide football for the children and a big ‘thank you’ goes out to all that help. They now attend our weekly training session and some practice matches. We will be organising matches against other clubs for these younger teams in the near future.

Ysgol Hiraddug A wide range of activities have been taking place at Ysgol Hiraddug: Over a hundred children were presented with medals by Prestatyn Library for taking part in the summer reading project “The Spooky House” .

The Infants held a harvest service in the school hall for their parents and the juniors attended the United Reformed Church for their service.

Dyfed house won the first inter-house competitions of the year, the cross country.

There has also been an extensive programme of inter school sports competitions this term including football and netball. In the area cross country team championships our school team were first in three of the four sections. The lower junior girls were particularly successful with Kerry Morris finishing first, Maddie Devlin second, Lora Devlin third, Maddie Cunnah fifth and Abbi Lloyd nineth. Several of our Year 6 children have applied to be sports ambassadors. They were interviewed by a panel of local sports officers and four children were appointed: Elijah Beattie, Annabel Morgan Platt, Benj Ellis and Leah Hobson.

We have just held a poetry writing competition and medals were presented for the winning entries for boys and girls in each class. Congratulations to the following children: Year 1-Lilley Gregory and Rhys Vincent, Year 2 - Iwan Eames and Heidi Morris, Year 3 - Kaan Colagolu and Kayli Fraser, Year 4 -Daniel Davies and Kerry Morris, Year 5 - Daniel Gorton and Nell Davies, Year 6 -Ben Shepherd and Annabel Morgan Platt.

Our Energy Green programme has now been completed. We are very grateful to British Gas for providing a range of energy-saving measures such as modifications to our school boilers, insulation and installation of solar panels.

Year 6 have attended a three day residential visit to Snowdonia National Park, where they went on a mountain walk, explored Harlech Castle, travelled on the Festiniog railway and visited Beddgelert.

Our charity work this term included: collecting 88 Operation Christmas Child Boxes, raising over £300 for children’s cancer charities and Race for Life, collecting food for Action for Children, holding a cake sale for Children in Need and continuing to support the education of our sponsor child in Ethiopia, Bizuayehu.

The Eco committee have taken part in tree planting around the school grounds.

Year 2 took part in a Welsh Jambori.

THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. BRIDGET. St Bridget’s Parish Church.  It seems scarcely credible that Christmas is coming round again. Perhaps there is some truth in the saying that as you get older the time goes more quickly but be that as it may the main content of this article is the list of Christmas activities. After a very successful Bring and Buy in October and an equally successful Christmas Fair in November we are into one of the busiest times of the Church Calendar. The services for this period are as follows: Sunday 8th December at 3.oo pm there is the Christingle Service in Horeb.

Friday 22nd December at 7.00 pm we have Carols, Readings and Christmas refreshments at St. Michael’s Parish Church in Trelawnyd.

Sunday 22nd December at 10.30 am there is a Nativity Family Service at Cwm Parish Church – children and families are especially welcome! At 6.00 pm there is a Service of Nine lessons and Carols followed by seasonal refreshments in the Old School.

Tuesday 24th December – Christmas Eve at 6.00 pm: Vigil Eucharist at Trelawnyd Parish Church.

Tuesday 24th December at 11.30 pm Midnight Mass in St. Bridget’s Parish Church, Dyserth (Carols will be sung from 11.15 pm).

Wednesday 25th December – Christmas Day at 10.30 am Eucharist at Cwm Parish Church.

Dyserth WI The Dyserth WI members are supporting the Not in my Name campaign during November. The 25th November is the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women. The Women's Institute has been campaigning for this since 2008 and are happy to encourage men and male organisations to sign up to the Not in my Name campaign.

One in four women in Wales will experience domestic violence at the hands of a partner during their lives and 150,000 women in Wales will suffer some form of gender-based violence. We are asking men to take responsibility for reducing violence against women. One way they can do this is to sign a 'white ribbon' poster or wear a white ribbon on the 25th November as a personal pledge never to condone or remain silent about violence against women.

We are contacting male organisations in the area, but if you or your organisation would like to support this campaign, please contact Megan on dyserthwi@gmail.com for further information.

Members of the WI enjoy many other activities apart from campaigning. Last month was the traditional Harvest Supper and as usual members provided and then feasted on a delicious buffet . Many members have recently participated in three excellent craft workshops, learning how to make Christmas decorations. These were ably led by Elaine Jones and we thank her for her time and effort.

We go on theatre and concert trips, visit places of interest and enjoy restaurant meals together. Our next trip is to the Chester Music Society carol service at Chester Cathedral. We have a very interesting variety of speakers at our monthly meetings. We meet on the second Wednesday evening of every month, except August, in Paterson Hall (behind the chapel) on Dyserth High Street at 7.30 pm. New members will be made very welcome.

Macmillan Coffee Morning Hi just like to tell everybody how well we did at our Macmillan Coffee Morning at Patterson Hall Dyserth on Sat 28th Sep 2013 we raised £897 but have to pay expenses of £35 out of that. I would like to thank everybody who helped on the day and for all donations we received and thank you to all the people who came to support us on the day. People can be truly amazing with their kindness.

Louise Schrempft — Ceramic Potter Located in Lower Voel road, Louise’s Pottery is a hive of activity and she’s busy preparing another of her ceramic art. Commissions. Louise’s mother produced ceramics and she used to watch her crafting at home.

This was the spark that ignited the interest in art. The early years were taken up training as an illustrator and then gaining a Masters degree at Wolverhampton. The first journey into ceramics happened in the late 1980’s making large scale ceramic murals. After living in various areas of the UK Louise has settled back in her home village of Dyserth where she creates her art, and it’s diverse! From ceramic buttons and jewellery to large scale commissions, all the work is hand crafted, fired and glazed in the workshop at home. Some commissions have been sold at Bonhams! Murder in Cwm! We were treated to an excellent evening of piracy, murder and jolly japes with a Murder Mystery Night at Cwm Parish Hall on the 25th October. Accompanied by an excellent meal and friendly company, so well done everyone who participated. We certainly look forward to the next Mystery and another fun evening out.

Breathing and Back Pain One of the most important parts of yoga is proper breathing. The effectiveness of yoga on back pain has been researched and published in Spine and, according to the study, there was a significant improvement in terms of pain intensity, depression, and amount of medication use in patients after yoga therapy.

Another study emphasised the potential benefits of breathing exercises in relieving back pain. In this study, they used chronic low back pain patients. These patients were grouped in two; one group received a six- to eight-week breath therapy exercise lessons, and the other received traditional physical therapy. It was found that both groups reported improvement in their pain. Dr. Andrew Weil, an integrative medicine expert, believes that breathing exercises can indeed benefit back pain. According to him: “I’m impressed by the power of breath and its ability to correct specific health problems and promote our general wellness. Proper breathing is a master key to good health.”

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to do basic breathing exercises properly.

ABDOMINAL BREATHING TECHNIQUE: Breathing exercises such as this one should be done twice a day or whenever you find your mind dwelling on upsetting thoughts or when you are experiencing pain.

Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. When you take a deep breath in, the hand on the abdomen should rise higher than the one on the chest. This helps to reinforce that goal of having the diaphragm pulling air into the base of the lungs.

After exhaling through the mouth, take a slow deep breath in through your nose imagining that you are sucking in all the air in the room and hold it for a count of 7 or as long as you are able. Slowly exhale through your mouth for a count of 8. As all the air is released with relaxation, gently contract your abdominal muscles to completely evacuate the remaining air from the lungs. It is important to remember that we deepen respiration not by inhaling more air but through completely exhaling it.

Repeat the cycle four more times for a total of 5 deep breaths and try to breathe at a rate of one breath every 10 seconds (or 6 breaths per minute). At this rate our heart rate variability increases which has a positive effect on cardiac health.

Improper breathing is one of the first things that chiropractors notice in patients with chronic back pain. At our clinic we teach patients the proper way to breathe, and help them to understand the connection between poor breathing and chronic back pain.

The People of Dyserth.

A continuation of a “Geographical Survey� written by Alun E Williams in 1953.

The Supply of Water to Dyserth.

Up to this century (20th), the old village of Dyserth had a ready source of water in the stream and four springs at Penisa, on Waterfall Hill, at Pentre Bach and on the Upper Voel Road. It is interesting to note that the majority of the population lived near these springs. The remains of two of these springs may be seen today. At one time the village of Dyserth was a small cluster of cottages near the church which drew its water from the stream and the steps from the road to the church can be seen today. The remainder of the village received its water from the springs. The people carried their water in buckets either from the springs or from the stream. It is stated that some women carried the water on their heads in special buckets, which had one handle near the brim of the bucket and another near the base. These great grandmothers had special padded caps to wear on their heads to relieve the pressure of weight of water which they carried. During severe drought some of these women carried water in this manner for more than half a mile.

Lord Aberconwy then began a scheme for the parts of Dyserth which had no springs, especially Tan-y-Foel and Ochr-y-Foel. The water scheme was a series of standpipes at certain distances connected to a pipe from Marian Mills. The cottages bought the right to draw water from the standpipes by purchasing a key from the estate for one shilling and sixpence. The more fortunate villagers carried on with their water supply from the springs and streams.

The spring on Waterfall Hill was reached by a descending series of steps to a trough into which flowed the water. This spring is now bricked up and the water is diverted into a pipe and to a tap a few feet away. The Penisa spring was set into the high bank on the roadside, one walked into this small compartment and filled one's bucket from a trough into which the water poured. These springs were locked at sundown each night and opened in the morning.

Since 1914 the whole of Dyserth has been supplied with water mains which runs from the Water Filter House in Trecastell. The water originally comes from Ffynnon Asaph, Marian Mills. This water is supplied by the Prestatyn Urban District Council who bought the water rights from Cwm Parish Council. This water supply is piped to Prestatyn, Meliden and Dyserth. An interesting note is that Cwm, the next village to Dyserth, has its water supply by tapping the Birkenhead supply pipe which passes through the village. During a very dry summer day water becomes scarce, owing to the influx of holiday makers. Thousands of gallons of water must be consumed each day by the Holiday Camp at Prestatyn each summer. Most of the water from Fynnon Asaph now flows along pipes, which makes the streams and waterfall very insignificant and as the population of Prestatyn grows, the supply of water is going to be a serious headache for someone. Dyserth is gradually loosing its name as a beauty spot now that the falls are so depleted and the future looks even worse if all the water is diverted to the supply pipe.

So there we are, from grand mothers carrying water on their heads to almost loosing the waterfalls, we now have a reliable and safe water supply. Unlike Energy, this is a wholly UK controlled resource and whether managed by the public or private sector, it continues to be mostly very plentiful and in regular supply.

DYSERTH BOWLING CLUB - NOVEMBER 2013.

Dyserth 'A' in the North Wales League Division successfully avoided relegation with some positive end of season results. In their last game against Craig-yDon they won by 10-4 and finished in eighth position. Overall the season proved to be most successful and Dyserth bowlers are already looking forward to the 2014 season with confidence.

Members experienced a successful day on Saturday 2nd November. Following the Club's Annual General Meeting, the Annual Dinner was held at the Bod Erw, St. Asaph. The meal was up to its usual high standard and the evening proved to be a most enjoyable social event.

At the end of the season a number of volunteers, under the stewardship of Ewan Davies, helped to prepare the green for 2014. Much of the activity has borne fruit and the green looks in extremely good condition for its Winter break.

The publicity provided by the Dyserth Community Day function at the Community Hall resulted in a good response from members of the public. A number of people of various ages turned up to the Club's Open Day the following Saturday. They were welcomed by various team members and were invited to have a game on the bowling green. Sympathetic advice and encouragement were offered and positive results were obtained in that a number showed a desire to take up the game in the coming season.

Should anyone else be interested, they can get in touch with the Secretary, Allan Jones at 01745 853557 or any club member.

Members have been concerned with a number of cases of vandalism in and around the green. The Police have been informed and it is hoped that C.C.T.V. cameras will soon be installed in order to identify the perpetrators.

The Blue Lion Inn, Cwm – Under New Attitude!

One of the most common comments I hear as the new landlord of the Blue Lion Inn at Cwm is “I haven’t been here for years”. That’s a shame, as it has all the atmosphere you would expect of a pub reputed to be the second oldest in Wales. Various nooks and crannies give it a character and charm all of its own and it is well worth the drive out. From a baronial style restaurant to tables for two in the snug, from settees round a roaring open fire to a bar specialising in real ales and ciders, the Blue Lion Inn offers something for everyone. We even have a ghost!

The Blue Lion Inn has gained a reputation of the last few years for being the pub that was never open. Since July 15th, when we took over, the pub has never been shut – a practice we intend to continue – and we are one of very few that are open on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Part of our ethos has been to focus on the local area for our supplies. Most of our kitchen ingredients come from within 30 miles, and where we need to go further afield, we still buy from Welsh companies. Our real ales are brewed locally, as is our cider, although we do go to national brands for some of our guest ales. As I stand today, I can count three draught lagers, two draught bitters, one draught cider, six cask ales, and three real ciders on the bar. Quite a range, we believe, and a goldmine for local real ale drinkers!

Our restaurant menu is based on the best ingredients available. We do not cut corners by buying in ready-made food, nor do we accept anything less than the best quality. It would be very easy for us to reflect this in our prices, but, again, we have a very simple ethos - providing our local community with the best possible food at the best value we can achieve. Sometimes I feel that this works against us, as people do not believe that we can deliver the quality that we claim at the price that we charge.

NSPCC 'Tis The Season To Be Jolly As you read this you will be beginning to gear up for the Christmas festivities. I don't know about you, but I steadfastly refuse to contemplate anything Christmas until at least December 1st - that's despite the more commercially minded bombarding us with gift suggestions and Christmas “music” since about Easter. We romantics still treasure the magic of Yuletide, the extra kindnesses, the thoughtfulness, the generosity of spirit ( quite partial to the generosity of spirits too!), and of course, the fun and feasting. Better then to have a few weeks of frantic, exciting preparation than a tedious 3 month marathon.

Our shop has done fantastically well this year, so it is timely to thank all of you, for bringing us your unwanted treasures, your unwanted “tat”, and for indulging yourselves in buying generously from our lavish stocks. I'm sure you will be clearing the decks in preparation for anticipated new gifts, so the more you bring in the more we can sell – and while you're there, how about a stocking filler or two, or some books for respite over the holidays, or even a lovingly cared-for designer outfit for your other half (who said “that's a fair swap”!) The total collected for the NSPCC was an outstanding £34,136.43p, now that’s something to really celebrate.

I must especially thank all our shop volunteers working so hard, and giving so freely of their time and energy. We could not do it without you. Lastly, a special thank you for the “Cake Fairy” who magically appears with tempting goodies.

Sadly Christmas isn't so good for everyone, perhaps not for the 1.4 million callers to Childline, or the 280,000 who contacted online, or the 91,000 children under Child Protection, or the victims of Savile and his like (Operation Yewtree), or the children abused in Care Homes (Pallial). All of this consumes vast resources at the NSPCC, and through everyone locally, we are making a significant contribution. Good for you!

Now then, what do you want for Christmas? How would it be if on Christmas Day the phones at Childline did not ring at all, and that all children, everywhere, were safe and well. It doesn't seem much to ask.

Based in the Paterson Hall at Dyserth Chapel and is open every Wednesday between 10.00am and 1.00pm .

Anyone can become a member of the co-op, which supplies vegetables, fruit and salad items at a very reasonable cost - just £4.00 per bag of veg, fruit or salad, or £2.00 for a smaller bag of fruit or veg. We also supply a mixed bag of veg, fruit and salad for £4.00. Extra large bags are also available for £6.00. Also for sale each week are loose bananas, baking potatoes and other occasional produce such as grapefruit or Satsuma's.
