All Whitsunday Electrical, a local business to Airlie Beach and surrounds, have been trying to start a conversation about mental health through wearing floral shirts on Fridays 0429035046
With Declan ONNDECK
“Give us a wave if you see us out there in the Whitsundays!” he said.
For me, this week’s been a bit tough. Lots of things conspiring to make me feel overwhelmed, to make me feel inadequate, I suppose. Those feelings feed off each other, and it’s a cycle that I know all too well. So, what have I done about it? I’ve told people. I spoke to good friends, to family, and I spoke to anyone who would listen. I got out and about, I went for walks and runs, and I practiced mindfulness –because not everything your brain tells you is true, nor is it So,helpful.that’s how I’m feeling. What about you?
Iexpress.think we’re very fortunate to live in a time when mental health awareness is becoming so de-stigmatised. I’m sure that a lot of people out there remember when it wasn’t –it hasn’t been the case in my lifetime – and I count myself so lucky for that.
When All Whitsunday Elec trical staff head out on the job on a ‘Fun Shirt Friday’, they’re decked out in their usual workman pants and boots, but topped with vibrant flowery shirts to spread the simple idea to be open about mental health and supporting your mates.

to send me an email to tell me how you’re going, too. Because we all struggle a little sometimes, and there’s power in telling each other that.
The company plan on wearing their floral shirts indefinitely for Friday fun shirts to main tain that culture of being an open book.

A yoga and Pilates teacher for 25 years, Manyia is originally from England but spent 14 years in Noosa where she owned and operated three yoga studios.
Looking for a new adventure, she moved to the Whitsundays two years ago and now feels a calling to open a dedicated studio which offers infrared heated yoga and Pilates classes, the first of its type in the region.

You may think of stretching as something performed only by runners or gymnasts. But we all need to stretch to protect our mobility and independence; in fact, that stretching has to happen on a regular basis. It should be daily.
Once you’ve given some of those a crack, you might even find you like it. Performing a daily stretching ritual, especially in the morning, can set you up for the day. It can centre you.

What happened? You’re a mess!
It might seem overwhelming to perform a daily stretching routine; with a body full of muscles, the idea is a bit daunting. But you don’t have to stretch every muscle you have.
In her youth, Manyia was a marathon and triathlon competitor, but after she sustained many injuries she was no longer able to run.
The infrared heat has powerful healing benefits. It releases stress and tension, sweats out the heavy metals and toxins, and reduces anxiety.
VIBE FUSION
Manyia Vale owner and operator of Vibe Yoga and Pilates
Here’s how it starts: your hamstrings are tight, your physio or chiro says, but to release that built up tension, you need to stretch your calves. Ok, you’ve stretched out your calves – but how flexible is the right kind of flexible? And now your hip flexor is the cause of that pesky hamstring trouble. Your whole lower body is a condensed mess of knotted dough.
It’s daunting and confusing, and it’s kind of a pain. You don’t do exercise so you can keep exercising after the exercise. I’ve just finished a run, I don’t have the energy to do a post-workout stretch!
INFERNO PILATES (HIIT)
Since then, she has felt passionate about helping others in the same way.
With five classes a day, running morning and afternoon, there are options for everyone in the community and everyone is welcome.
High intensity, low impact interval training with Pilates principals, weights and resistant bands are also added to classes. It is an effective way of recovering from sports injuries, it strengthens, leans and tones, burning fat for 72 hours after a 45-minute session.
Deciding to find alternative ways to heal her broken body, she discovered Bikram (26+2) hot yoga which not only calmed her mind but also aided her recovery.
The areas critical for mobility are in your lower extremities: your calves, your hamstrings, your hip flexors in the pelvis and quadriceps in the front of the thigh.
Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you call on the muscles for activity, they’re weak and unable to extend all the way. That puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage.
But hold on: what does stretching even do?
Introducing Vibe Yoga and Pilates, a brand-new studio opening in the heart of Airlie Beach this Saturday.
Owner Manyia Vale says she is excited to welcome a community of people looking to connect, stretch out and revive from the stress of everyday life.
When you’re young and fit, you might not see the benefits – but then one day it all comes crashing (maybe pinging) down. You’re tight, you’re sore, or – worst of all – you’re injured. You’ve torn your hamstring, you’ve got constant back pain, you can’t bend over without cramping up.
So this week of Movement Month, get down and stretch.

From humble beginnings as a slow rider, Kehres said it was persistence and personal motivation that led her to the big win
25 years – an eating disorder – where in my late 20s and early 30s I weighed no more than 30 kilos. Doctors would look at me and say, how are you still alive?” she said.
“As I crossed the finish line, I looked at this lady I was riding with and said, did I just do that, and I started crying. The only reason I sometimes believe it’s happened is looking at the jersey. It just goes to show you’re ca pable of doing whatever you put your mind to,” Kehres said.

“I was born and raised in Lebanon in the war, and my escape was going into the ol ive fields and the bush. Now, if life gets too much, I still go into the bush – just now on a mountain bike.
It’s another win in a long series of top spots the local rider has claimed, and another landmark in a journey that started over 20 years ago.

“That’s what I think people can get from mountain biking.”
For her, it was passion, discipline and un bridled commitment which helped her win, each born from a place of vulnerability matched by strength – as well as a photo graph taken years before.
“At the moment, all our mountain biking trails are black,” Kehres said.
“At a previous tournament in 2020, I sat on the number one podium as a joke. I’d come dead last and I told my husband to take a photo of me sitting there. I’ve had that pho to blown up and put on my wall as a goal,” Kehres said.
“We’ve got champion mountain bikers who live in the region who’ve got nowhere to train on. Imagine the tourism and what that could bring to the area if we hosted a national championship some day – a Com monwealth Games.
