Drop In With Daniel
Hello everyone.
I hope you all had a wonderful week.
Last weekend, I had the joy of covering one of the brightest highlights on our calendar - the Great Barrier Reef Festival. It all began on Friday evening with a truly memorable experience aboard the Camira, camera in hand and raincoat at the ready. Even with heavy rain draping the horizon, the fireworks lit up the sky in spectacular fashion. I also got to meet some great people on board and share some really nice conversations.
Saturday was a feast for the senses, with the main street closed to traffic for the Revvin’ the Reef event and the Street Parade. Strolling down the centre of town felt almost nostalgic, it transported me back to my Adelaide hometown during Fringe season, when the streets buzz, the air is warm, and the whole community comes alive to cele-
brate.
Sunday delivered another gem, the Recyclable Regatta. Having missed it last year, I can now see exactly why it’s such a crowd favourite. From the creative watercraft to the laughter of spectators, it was pure fun from start to finish. Right now, it feels like the Whitsundays is in full swing, with one incredible event rolling into the next. This weekend, it’s Airlie Beach Race Week, and I’m counting down the days until I’m out on the media boat, lens trained on the sails, capturing yet another slice of paradise in motion.

Red Cat Adventures has secured continued funding from the Australian Government’s Tourism Reef Protection Initiative, allowing the Whitsundays-based eco-tourism operator to expand its reef conservation efforts through to May 2026.
Since joining the program in late 2022, Red Cat Adventures has taken an active role in protecting the Great Barrier Reef by training its staff in reef health monitoring, predator control, and data collection. This important work is integrated into the visitor experience, turning tourists into informed ambassadors for reef protection.
Over the past year, the team has conducted more than 1,180 reef health surveys, removed over 9,200 coral predators including Crown-of-thorns starfish and Drupella snails, and uploaded more than 11,000 reef images to the ReefCloud platform to support real-time monitoring
and scientific research.
Red Cat Adventures also works closely with Traditional Owners, supporting 64 On Country visits that promote cultural reconnection and shared environmental stewardship. One of the key sites of focus is Cockatoo Point on Hook Island, where teams carry out predator removal, coral monitoring, and guest education.
General Manager Asher Telford said the funding extension reflects the organisation’s commitment to reef protection.
“Protecting the reef is part of who we are, and this funding allows us to build on the achievements of the past year while continuing to give our guests a deeper connection to this remarkable ecosystem.”
As part of the SeaLink Whitsundays family, Red Cat Adventures and its sister company, Whitsunday Jet Ski Tours, are helping ensure the reef’s future remains as vibrant and awe-inspiring as it is today.

Government Calling For Feedback For Our Waters Future
Amajor review of water planning is underway in the Whitsundays, with the Queensland Government launching public consultation to help shape a new regional water plan.
The review aims to strengthen water security across the region by incorporating updated science and regional feedback, particularly from the Don, northern Proserpine and southern O’Connell basins— areas not currently covered by an existing plan.
The Whitsunday water plan will address climate resilience, cultural values, regional growth, and unallocated water, ensuring it meets the future needs of agriculture, industry and communities.
The updated plan will align with broader regional efforts such as the Burdekin Regional Water Assessment, which supports long-term water security and economic development across North Queensland.
Member for Whitsunday Amanda Camm emphasised the importance of local en-
gagement and strong planning for the region’s future.
“Water is the lifeblood of our region’s agricultural sector and getting this plan right means we will give our growers the confidence they need to invest and grow,” Ms Camm said.
“Public input is essential to getting this right and we want to hear from local communities, industry and cane growers about how water is used, what’s working, and what could be improved.”
Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy said the Government was delivering on a key election promise by reviewing outdated water plans and expanding coverage across the Whitsundays.
“Labor left billions of litres of water tied up in bureaucracy, but the Crisafulli Government knows how important it is to unlock water to drive economic growth, more jobs, or stronger regional communities,” Minister Leahy said.

“Our Government knows the importance of water security across the Whitsunday region, and this is one of the steps we are taking to help deliver it long term.
“The proposal includes expanding the current plan area to create a new water plan, which would bring three coastal basins into Queensland’s water-planning framework for the first time.”
This review is part of the State’s wider Watertight initiative, which includes seven new or upgraded weirs and the overhaul of 23 existing water plans.
The goal is clear: deliver long-term water security to regions like the Whitsundays that are ready for growth.
VMR BOWEN BECOMES
MRQ BOWEN
The Bowen Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) has officially changed their names to the Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) Bowen after their celebration last weekend.
The event saw around 40 people in attendance, including Federal Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox MP and the Chief Officer of the Queensland Police Water Unit. All crew members were issued citations recognising their role as part of the inaugural MRQ Bowen team.

BMA CQ Rescue Winches Woman To Safety
An afternoon of kayaking near Whitsunday Island took a serious and unexpected turn on Monday 4 August, when a woman began suffering from severe chest pain, prompting an urgent call to BMA CQ Rescue.
The rescue helicopter was tasked just before 2.30pm and launched immediately to the woman’s last known location. The mission required precise coordination as time was critical and the woman’s location was remote.
Upon arrival, the rescue crew faced an additional challenge. The area was surrounded by dense bushland and had very limited
beach frontage, making it impossible for the helicopter to land. With no safe place to set down, the crew resorted to a winch rescue.
While the aircraft hovered above, a highly trained medical team was winched down through the trees to reach the patient on the ground.
With the helicopter hovering above, the medical team was able to treat the woman on the scene. Once they stabilised the woman, the patient and crew were winched back up to the BMA CQ Rescue Helicopter.
Federal Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox MP said the now MRQ Bowen has been helping keep people safe on our waters, attending to call-outs from breakdowns, to supplying fuel, to grounded vessels to search and rescues for the last 60 years.
“Congratulations to all members and volunteers, and a massive thank you, for everything you do for our community and keeping our boaties safe,” he added. Most rescues for MRQ Bowen involve breakdowns at sea, often in remote loca-

Ahuge congratulations and thank you to the Reef Festival committee and volunteers – the event creates a great vibe and family friendly atmosphere in Airlie Beach that 1000’s of people enjoyed.
Fantastic fireworks, stunning cars and parade in the main street created something special for the region – bigger and better than ever. Well done!
Have Your Say on the Airlie Beach Masterplan
Whitsunday Regional Council has released the draft Airlie Beach Masterplan, outlining a long-term vision for the precinct with proposed upgrades to public spaces, infrastructure, and catalyst projects in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympics.
The draft responds to earlier community feedback and aims to enhance pedestrian comfort, shade, parking, market and event infrastructure, foreshore activation, and the amenity of Airlie Creek.
Local businesses will play a vital role in shaping and ultimately benefiting from
these plans. Your input matters.
From the feedback the Whitsundays Chamber of Commerce and Industry has already received, there’s strong support for completing the Airlie Hill lookout and improving pedestrian links, alongside calls for practical parking solutions, a more central transport hub, improved taxi/ride share ranks, better accessibility for people with mobility challenges, and stronger safety measures for the night-time economy. Businesses have also highlighted the need for upgraded cruise ship facilities and shaded rest areas.
The Chamber will soon be seeking further member feedback to inform a unified submission on behalf of the Whitsundays business community.
We encourage all the community to review the draft and contribute to the consultation before Monday 17 August. Together, we can ensure the Masterplan delivers longterm benefits for businesses, residents, and visitors as we build toward a vibrant future for Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays.
AMighty Lift-Off for Bowen and Australia’s Space Future
Last week, history was made in Bowen, and I couldn’t be prouder of what it means for our Whitsunday region and for Australia.
Gilmour Space Technologies successfully launched its Eris rocket from the Bowen Orbital Spaceport and while the mission ended shortly after takeoff, make no mistake: this was a major milestone.
Getting that rocket off the ground was no small feat as it was Australia’s first attempt at an orbital launch in more than 50 years, and the very first from an Australian-designed and built rocket.
There’s been plenty of commentary since the launch with some of it supportive, some of it unfair. But as someone who has backed Gilmour Space from day one, let me be clear: this wasn’t a failure, it was a foundational success.
Every major advancement in space technology, from NASA to SpaceX, has been built on trial, error, and relentless perseverance. What Gilmour achieved is proof that world-class space innovation is happening right here in the Whitsundays.
WThis is about much more than a single rocket flight. It’s about laying the groundwork for a commercial space industry that could create jobs, attract investment, and put Bowen and the Whitsunday region on the map in a whole new way.
It’s about showing our young people, especially those growing up in country Queensland, that they don’t have to leave the regional areas to chase a career in advanced science, engineering, or aerospace. The opportunities are launching right here.
James, Adam, Michelle and the entire team at Gilmour Space have shown incredible grit, vision and courage in getting to this point.
Lifting off from the red dirt of Bowen was a symbolic and significant moment for all of us. It proves that the future of Australian space exploration doesn’t belong to the big cities alone but belongs to regional communities like ours that dare to dream big.
Let’s be the kind of region that gets behind bold ideas and backs pioneers who are doing what’s never been done before.
Because this is only the beginning and I, for one, can’t wait to see what comes next.
hitsunday Regional Council was proud to be a major sponsor for the Great Barrier Reef Festival last weekend, through our Community Sponsorship program.
Council provides support for residents and regional organisations through a range of grants and support packages such as Community Assistance Grants, Junior Athlete Financial Support and the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).
Residents can find out more information on the above programs by visiting the Grants and Community Assistance page on our website. Here, residents are also able to access Grant Finder, a free search tool for grants and funding available through the Queensland Government.

Jane Habib Now At Barefoot Medicine Whitsundays
Barefoot Medicine Whitsundays in Cannonvale welcomed a new GP on Monday, an experienced doctor with 21 years in the field and a strong passion for community care.
Originally from Melbourne, Dr Jane Habib has worked mostly in rural areas across New South Wales and Queensland. Before studying medicine, she raised her children, completed a naturopathy degree, and then returned to university.
“I became more interested in looking after people and the health sector.
I did a naturopathy degree, and then I felt like I didn’t know enough or have enough control over what you could do. So that’s why I went on and did medicine,” she said. Now, as a GP, she focuses on a wide range of care.
“I particularly see a lot of women but I also do a lot of mental health, children, aged care, preventative medicine, health checks, all the useful GP things,” said Jane.
A firm believer in working collaboratively with her patients, Jane finds that partnering with her patients through a shared decision-making model leads to the best outcomes.
“I don’t tell the patient, this is what you have to do,” Jane said.
ON THE BEAT
Road Safety –
Everyone’s Responsibility
Another week has passed with another terrible tragedy on our roads. From the outset of this article, I want to pass on my deepest condolences to the all the family of our most recent victim of road trauma in this District.
I also want to thank the exceptional work undertaken by our Whitsunday Emergency Services. The Police, the Ambulance, the Fire Department and every community member who stopped to help last Monday at the accident on Shute Harbour Road.
have completed 127,345 RBT’s. In that we have recorded a staggering 2,329 positive returns. There have also been a total 3,139 tickets issued this year.
Lastly, there is the responsibility of you, the drivers and road users. You have a responsibility to be safe. You have a responsibility to make a decision to not drink and drive. To not speed. To drive a vehicle that is mechanically sound and road worthy.
“We discuss the options, and the patient can think about things and decide what they want to do, and then we work out what’s best for them.”
She says what she loves most is connecting with her patients and getting to know people and their families. Additionally, she enjoys the long term care you get from being a GP.
Having raised children and now grandchildren, she brings real-life experience to her practice, which has made her the GP she is today.
Everybody has a part to play in the safety of us on our roads. The council and state governments play a part in the preparations and planning of the roads that we use. They work in conjunction with the Department of Transport and Main Roads along with other stakeholders to set appropriate speed limits. It’s then left to the Queensland Police to make sure road users abide by these limits. And we do that really well here in the Mackay Whitsunday District. This year alone we
I ask from the bottom of my heart to please consider the families and loved ones of people left behind if you do decide to take a risk. Please stop and consider the responsibility you have a road user. Consider the consequences of your actions if the worst was to occur. Driving is a privilege, not a right. I would hate to have one of my officers, knocking on your door, delivering the worst of news. Please be safe out there.

PProserpine Vet Celebrates 50 Years Of Community Care
roserpine Veterinary Surgery is marking a major milestone, 50 years of continuous service to the Whitsundays.
Dr Faye McPherson, who joined the practice in 2003, says the longevity is a testament to community support and the clinic’s commitment to care.
“I’ve seen businesses celebrate 15 years, but 50 years? That’s really worth celebrating,” she said.
Originally partnering with Dr Bill Bowman, Faye then has been dedicated to building and growing the clinic ever since.
Over two decades, Faye has grown the clinic significantly, driven partly by personal circumstances. Her daughter Karli was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a newborn, requiring unpredictable and lengthy hospital stays and a supportive team at the Vet Surgery.
With a strong team of vets including an equine specialist due in August, Faye says
the future is bright.
“We’re excited to offer a more extensive equine clinic in August with the arrival of a new member of the vet team,” said Faye.
“Having a strong team means we can offer a full range of services and keep supporting the community, whether it’s family pets or farm animals.”
Faye also said their newest vet Dr Nicole Frolich is highly qualified with eight years of experience in eterinary critical care and emergency work. Faye said Nicole will play an important role in Proserpine Vet Surgery’s future and that they are both excited to look forward to the next 50 years of serving this beautiful region.
Passionate about giving back, the clinic sponsors junior sport, golf, rodeos, and local events.
After 50 years, Proserpine Vet Surgery remains a vital part of the Whitsunday community.
Proserpine Op Shop Overwhelmed By Mattress Dumping
Volunteers of the St. Paul’s Op Shop are calling for people of the community to stop donating unsellable mattresses and furniture at the church’s furniture shed.
The Op Shop, run exclusively by volunteers, uses the profits from the store to fund the St Paul’s Anglican Church. However volunteer at the store, Chris Hinschen, believes that rising costs at the dump has led people to leave mattresses at the Op Shop’s furniture shed as a donation, but they do not accept mattresses.
The furniture shed, located directly behind St Paul’s Anglican Church, is unmanned — making it easy for the drop-offs.
The volunteer led op shop does not have the funds to take these mattresses to the dump and they are stuck.
“We’re just a little community op shop,” Chris explained. “
“We don’t pay anyone, and that’s how we survive. We’re all volunteers, and we can’t sustain this.”
The hygiene risk of second-hand mattresses means they cannot be resold.
Some furniture donations have also been
too large or too damaged to sell. “We had a lounge that dogs had slept in. We just can’t use that.”
The op shop is asking for only clean, saleable furniture and typical household donations like clothing.
“I am just appealing to people, please don’t dump this, because our only recourse will be to close down, ” said Chris.

Bowen’s Clubhouse Tackles Loneliness Head-On
Each August, Loneliness Awareness Week stands as a reminder of just how essential human connection is to the overall wellbeing of communities accross Australia. This year’s theme, ‘Moments Matter’, is one that truly resonates with the team at Selectability’s Bowen Clubhouse, where simple, everyday interactions are making a big difference in the lives of locals.
Whether it’s sharing a meal, creating a craft project, or just enjoying a cuppa and a chat, Clubhouse members are forming bonds and tackling the devastating effects of social isolation.
With studies revealing that one in six Australians experience severe loneliness, which can impact physical health as much as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, Selectability’s recovery-focused Clubhouse program is proving to be a lifeline for many Regional Coordinator Jenelle Maher said
the Bowen team works closely with participants to ensure activities are relevant and engaging.
“We switch up our activities quite often to ensure there’s something for everyone,” said Jenelle.
“Moments Matter being this year’s theme for Loneliness Awareness Week, resonates with the Clubhouse, as our activities empower our members to create positive social interactions.”
From BBQs at Horseshoe Bay to creative days at the Clubhouse, these simple moments are helping locals build confidence, connection, and community.
The Clubhouse is open to anyone over 18 seeking to improve their mental wellbeing.
Find the latest activity timetable at selectability.com.au or drop by and meet the team at 38 Herbert Street. NDIS and nonNDIS funding options are available.
Seagrass Theatre And Music Company Next Performance

The annual event allows students from Years 7-12 to showcase their singing and dancing talents on stage performing family-friendly classics from musicals such as ‘Chicago’, ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Annie’ to name a few.
Established in 2021, the students have run many theatre seasons including one act plays, previous musical theatre evenings and the rock opera, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”, which won the Whitsunday Australia Day Cultural Event of the Year Award earlier this year.
The students themselves perform all roles within a theatre experience from the directorial, creative, technical, design, con-
struction, business and promotion processes.
You may recognise some of the familiar faces on stage from the school’s musical production of ‘Newsies’ in May.

Backed by the virtuosic Jamie Rigg Band, Lloyds will take the audience on a nostalgic journey, spotlighting Bennett’s greatest hits—like I Left My Heart in San Francisco—while weaving in gems by fellow crooners that Bennett never recorded.
“I liked the idea of doing some of the songs that Tony didn’t do, that we felt he could have—just to mix it up a little,” Chris says.
Once described as “one of Australia’s most broadcast vocalists,” Chris has lent his voice to hit jingles, top session recordings, and major TV appearances, including a stint on Neighbours, all while nurturing a lifelong passion for music.
“I started singing as a choir boy,” he says. “My grandmother was a wonderful pianist and singer of the jazz standards and the Great American Songbook, and I used to sing with her. I sang Night and Day before I probably sang Baa Baa Black Sheep.” Lloyds delivers the show with sincerity rather than imitation. “We don’t do dress-ups,” he says.
“We have masterful musicians, and I sing the way I sing—but we’re doing the songs that were hits for Bennett and the crooners that everyone recognises.”
The show begins at 11:00 AM and tickets cost $10.

Fans of classic rock are in for a treat as Creedence Clearwater Survival, Australia’s premier tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival, returns to the Airlie Beach Hotel in just a few weeks.
“We play every Creedence song,” said frontman Paul Haynes, who performs under the name John Forgery.
The Melbourne-based band is known for its faithful renditions of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s most beloved hits, and this performance will be no different.
“The songs will be Bad Moon Rising, Fortunate Son, Looking Out My Back Door, Cotton Fields, Green River, Jambalaya, Lodi, The Old Man Down the Road, Have You Ever Seen the Rain, Up Around the Bend, Centerfield, Sweet Hitch-Hiker, As Long as I Can See the Light, Heard It Through the Grapevine... it just goes on.”
Paul embraces the role completely, from the voice to the costume.
“I dress up in the Creedence gear with the wig and the cowboy shirt. I go by the name of John Forgery instead of John Fogerty,” he said.
“I have the voice too, I don’t know why that is. I just do.”
The band was originally called The Fortunate Sons, and Paul joined as a singer before taking up guitar duties. “They said, ‘Well, can you play guitar?’ And I said, ‘Oh, can I!’ And then there was a few Fortunate Sons around, so we changed our name to Creedence Clearwater Survival, which sounded more recognisable as a band.”
Paul and the band are no strangers to the Airlie Beach stage. They visited in March and said they had an amazing time. Paul’s only complaint... was the heat!
This time the band travels to the Airlie Beach Hotel in winter, and Paul is looking forward to the milder temperatures and break from the usual heat and humidity.
is a key part of the show. At one point, they lead the audience in a classic baseball clap before launching into the next song.
The band has been performing for over a decade and travels regularly.
“Most weekends, we play somewhere and we mainly do it because we love it.
Paul’s passion for music begun early. He said music has always been something that touched him deeply.
“Some people like cars, some people like art. I like music... it touches my soul.”
Catch Creedence Clearwater Survival live at the Airlie Beach Hotel later this month for a night of nostalgia, energy, and rock ‘n’ roll classics.

Another Success For Great Barrier Reef Festival
The Cruise Whitsundays Great Barrier Reef Festival wrapped its activity-packed three-day program on August 3, leaving attendees with a renewed appreciation for the Whitsundays’ natural wonders.
From August 1–3, Airlie Beach came alive with thousands of locals and visitors embracing a program that continues to cement the festival as a cornerstone event for the region.
Despite a cold and soggy start on Friday night, fireworks lit up the sky just moments before rain set in. But the weather couldn’t dampen spirits, with thousands gathering on the Airlie Beach Foreshore to celebrate.
A major focus of the festival is community inclusivity, with involvement from arts organisations, environmental groups, schools, and local businesses. Reef education also featured strongly, with tourism operators and Master Reef Guides sharing their knowledge.
The Immerse art installation transformed the foreshore into an underwater wonderland, featuring recycled artworks from local and visiting artists. Indigenous language and marine life stories added further depth to the display.
Saturday’s Revvin’ the Reef Car Show lined
the Main Street with vintage and modern vehicles, while the Rotary Street Parade brought the community out in full force, all celebrating this year’s theme, Coral Kingdom.
The Ark Energy Family Fun Day provided hands-on reef education and entertainment for families, reinforcing the importance of protecting the reef.
Festival Chair Margie Murphy said the 2025 event marked a welcome revival after a tough 2024.
“The energy from both our community and visitors was amazing,” she said. “This festival truly embodies the spirit of our region.”

MEET TERRY ARCHER
AIRLIE BEACH RACE WEEK CHAIRMAN
As Chairman of Airlie Beach Race Week, Terry Archer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the annual sailing event runs smoothly both on and off the water. But come Thursday afternoon, he switches hats, trading the coordination clipboard for the helm of his multihull racer.
“I have a dual role,” Terry explained.
“I’m effectively the connection between the club’s management, the volunteers, and ensuring the onshore and offshore events. Then, from Thursday afternoon, I became a competitor.”
From Thursday afternoon onwards, Terry rolls into Race Mode.
Terry works closely with Regatta Di-
rector Jenni Birdsall, who oversees all sailing-related logistics. Together with volunteers coordinated by Heather, and with input from world-renowned race officers Kevin and Ross Wilson, the regatta comes to life across 11 classes and numerous divisions, including the highly subscribed Performance Cruising class.
Terry will race in the Racing Multihull Division alongside a crew of three fellow club members.
After the busy lead-up, Terry is looking forward to his time on the water. Despite being the Chairman, he is treated like a competitor, and he’s looking forward to representing the Whitsunday Sailing Club in the competition.
MEET JENNI BIRDSALL
AIRLIE BEACH RACE WEEK REGATTA DIRECTOR
As Regatta Director of Airlie Beach Race Week, Jenni Birdsall’s job spans the entire year, not just the week of racing in Airlie Beach.
“I’m basically in charge of coordinating as much as I possibly can to bring everyone together and direct whatever their role entails,” Jenni said.
Her responsibilities cover everything from official race documentation and safety management to results and coordination across teams.
She describes her role as a helicopter role, viewing all roles from above.
“I’m the overall coordinator of any safety issues that happen on or off the water within the regatta precinct,” she explained. “
I’m also managing the results, and I’m responsible for making sure everything flows the way it should.”
Airlie Beach is the only regatta where Jenni officially takes on the Regatta Director title, but she works across several major Australian events, including Hamilton Island, Magnetic Island, Geelong, and Townsville.
“I work with a good group of people and we rely on each other, we trust each other.”
With many race officials in their 60s, 70s or 80s, Jenni is helping train new recruits.
“We’re trying to bring on a younger group of people so we can pass this on to others.”
MEET HEATHER
SUTTON
WHITSUNDAY SAILING CLUB COMMODORE
Whitsunday Sailing Club
Commodore Heather Sutton plays a vital role in Airlie Beach Race Week, focusing on the volunteer crew who keep the event going.
“My role within Race Week is to organise volunteers,” Heather said.
Race Week is run by volunteers and we are very lucky that a lot of our volunteers have been coming back year after year, and they come from Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, we also have our local volunteers.”
From race directors to mark layers and prize organisers, volunteers handle most aspects of the event.
“Our volunteers start from the top, the Race Director, he’s a volunteer, and our
Principal Race Officer is a volunteer, it’s all done by volunteers,” she said.
“We have about 50 volunteers.”
Heather, who has sailed around the world, said sailing has been her life since age 12.
“You don’t think about anything that’s happening on shore, all your worries go away because you’re concentrating on getting that boat going faster.”
With Airlie Beach Race Week fast approaching, Heather’s still calling for more help.
“We are still looking for volunteers and they don’t have to have a sailing boat or boat license, they can be on the water helping.”

"Establishing an office in Airlie Beach was a passion of mine, as I felt there was demand on the ground here for premium boat sales," Dan Howcroft explains.
"I've spent my life on these waters and understand what Australian boaties need. With four offices across the east coast, having that local presence means we can offer truly top-notch service."
Dan's extensive background provides unparalleled knowledge across everything boating.
"We're not just about sales; Jenny and I have run a superyacht service business for nearly a decade, so we also understand the importance of providing com-
prehensive support to our clients long after the transaction," he added.

Busy Week Of Success For Airlie Beach Bowls Club
Can you believe there are only three weeks until spring? As the weather warms up in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales, our seasonal visitors will begin to head home. But what a week it has been for Airlie Beach Bowls Club—full of milestones, tight matches, and well-earned victories.
The week began with the Ladies A Grade Singles Final on Tuesday morning, with Betty Whitehorn and Vicki Spann going head-to-head in a thrilling contest. Despite a late comeback from Vicki, Betty held on to claim the title 25–22 in a closely fought battle. Betty has now achieved an impressive record—winning the B Grade title in 2017, the A Grade in 2018, and again in 2025. A huge congratulations to her.
In Tuesday afternoon social bowls, visiting bowler Mick Humphries from Moama Bowls Club (on the NSW/Victoria border) joined locals Tony Kelly (skip) and Pip Heddles to deliver a dominant performance against a strong field of 18 bowlers.
Also during the week, the Champion of Champions Ladies Fours was held at West Tigers and Northern Beaches Bowls Clubs. Representing ABBC, the team of Joan McGrath (skip), Ladda Purdie, Jill Spencer and Lyn Graham claimed the title. Their win was met with
well-deserved pride and applause from the club.
Saturday morning’s Scroungers competition saw first-round wins to Mark Mawson, John Askew and Andy McDougall. Askew went on to take the overall win, while Andrew Butler claimed the B Grade title.
On Sunday, 26 players took part in a competitive social bowls afternoon. The winning team— Tony Kelly (skip), Cathie Harris (lead) and Mel Fennell (second)—held their nerve in a close finish.
BOWLS
Meanwhile, at Sarina, the Champion of Champions Men’s Fours saw our team— Manny Isgro (skip), Bob McMahon, Luke Kinnear and Russell Jackson—defeat Proserpine in the semi-final before sealing a 20–18 victory over South Suburban with a thrilling last-bowl finish by Manny.
Looking ahead, Dan Dowell will represent the club in Monday’s Ladies B Grade
Champion of Champions final, and Betty Whitehorn returns Tuesday for the A Grade Champion of Champions. Best of luck to both.
Well done to all involved in a standout week for ABBC. Safe travels to our visiting bowlers—we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Whitsunday United Football Club Weekly Fixtures Results
After an extended period on the road, Whitsunday United’s senior men returned to home turf over the weekend, hosting Country in two competitive matches.
Division 2 opened strongly, converting early pressure into a 1–0 lead. However, two quickfire goals from Country just before halftime turned the momentum. The second half followed a similar pattern, with Whitsunday equalising to draw level, only for Country to find a late winner. The match ended in a narrow 3–2 loss for WUFC, despite a spirited performance.
Division 1 entered the match eager to reverse the result from their previous encounter with Country. Whitsunday took a 1–0 lead in the first half and dominated possession throughout, but Country’s defensive setup made it difficult to add to the scoreline. Despite creating numerous opportunities, WUFC couldn’t break through again, settling for a 1–0 win. While the result was positive, the team will be working on strategies to overcome deep defensive lines.
In youth fixtures, the Under 13 Prems claimed a thrilling 4–3 victory over Dolphins at Mackay Football Park. After conceding early, WUFC responded with goals to Alex D, Bailey B, and Mayson M to lead 3–1 at halftime. Sam C added a fourth before Dolphins scored twice to set up a tense finish, but Whitsunday held on for the win.
The Under 14s put on a commanding display against Lions in Mackay, winning 5–2. Austin opened the scoring with a brilliant strike from left-back, followed by goals to Shannon, Charlie, and a well-placed header from Shannon off Nick M’s corner. Despite a strong Lions start to the second half and two quick goals, Charlie’s second sealed the match for WUFC.
The Under 16s faced a tough away clash against ladder leaders Lions Green. Lions took advantage of the wind in the first half to go up 5–0. Despite the eventual 8–0 scoreline, which included a controversial penalty and an own goal, Whitsunday maintained their spirits, created chances, and found positives to take into their next match.
The Women’s Premier League side travelled to face a strong Magpies outfit, going down 0–5. Whitsunday spent long periods defending against Magpies’ dominant midfield. Defenders Claire and Loz stood strong under pressure, while Michelle and Karlee battled hard in midfield. Despite the score, the squad’s resilience remained evident, and they’ll aim to bounce back against league leaders Lions next week.
Reserve Grade impressed with a commanding 6–1 win, featuring goals from Euan van den Bergh, Kobi Miller, Aaron Kinsella (2), Pepe Perea, and Cialan Dollard.
In Premier League, WUFC started confidently, with Cillian Crowe opening the scoring. Despite a promising start and several chances, Wanderers capitalised on set pieces to take a 2–1 lead into halftime. They added three more in the second half, with Sean McCarthy netting a late penalty to finish 5–2. The result marks a moment to regroup and refocus heading into the next round.

Proserpine Vets Shine In Home Hill
It was an early start for the Proserpine Veterans Golfers who travelled by bus to Home Hill for the latest round of the Whitsunday Veterans competition.
The Home Hill volunteers provided a warm welcome, with a well-prepared course and delicious morning tea and lunch. The greens, as always, proved tricky for some, but spirits remained high throughout the day.
A total of 69 players took part, including 22 ladies and 47 men. Proserpine was strongly represented with eight ladies and ten men. The Proserpine women performed particularly well, with Robyn Whitham taking out the win on 38 points—an excellent result that some attributed to her recent lesson with Nathan. Four other Proserpine women featured in the ball run-down, including Jenny Hounsell (31),
Beryl Nosworthy (30), Leanne Alexander (30), and Paula McQuat (29).
In the men’s division, Les Gordon of Bowen took the win with 34 points, just ahead of Proserpine’s Barry Mortimer, who was runner-up on countback. Proserpine men also featured in the ball run-down with Peter Fox (32), Laurie Dakin (30), Ken Granger (30), John Roser (30), and Gary Scotford (28).
Pin shots were won by Robyn Whitham and Jenny Hounsell (in the hole) for the ladies, and by Neale Mahoney, Rob Byles (in the hole), Guy LeBlowitz (in the hole), and Doug Boss for the men.
Thanks to Ken, our bus driver, for a safe and smooth trip. Good luck to all heading to Wintersun next week!

Island Golf Day Raises $110,000 For HeartKids
GOLF
Close to 100 people attended the Heart Kids Charity Golf on Dent Island on Saturday 19 July.
An impressive $110,000 was raised for HeartKids, a national organisation supporting children with congenital and acquired heart conditions.
Now in its 11th year, the annual event is organised by Kerri and Troy Martin and has grown significantly since its beginnings.
“Last year we raised $80,000, and this year we have certainly surpassed that,” said Kerry.
The event has now become the biggest community event in Queensland.
“We never expected it to become the biggest community fundraiser for HeartKids in Queensland, but it’s thanks to the generosity and support of the community that it has.”
This year’s event featured a four-ball Ambrose golf tournament with 25 teams teeing off at 9.30am. The day included games on selected holes, barbecues, raffles, and both silent and live auctions.
The fun continued into the afternoon with presentations and prize announcements, recognising the winning teams and raffle draws.
Though not officially affiliated with HeartKids, the Martins began supporting the
after
daughter was born with a heart condition.
“Our first fundraiser years ago was for the McGrath Foundation, and then we moved to supporting HeartKids and have continued ever since,” Kerri said.
“HeartKids is the only national not-forprofit organisation solely focused on supporting and advocating for all people impacted by Congenital/Childhood Heart Disease, one of the largest causes of infant death in Australia. Every day in Australia eight babies are born with Congenital Heart Disease.
“They seek to give every child, teenager and adult in Australia with congenital or
childhood acquired heart disease a fighting chance to live a long, healthy and fulfilling life.
“Their support is a commitment for life because there is no known cure. People with congenital heart disease face unique challenges for their entire life.”
With limited golf buggies available on Dent Island, expansion is tricky but the couple hopes to continue growing the event in coming years.
“It’s mind-blowing to think how far it’s come,” Kerri said.
“But we couldn’t do it without the incredible support from the community. That’s what really makes it special.”
