AN AUSSIE FIRST TOUCHES DOWN IN WHITSUNDAYS

The Whitsundays helped to make aviation history this week when the first ever Bonza aircraft landed its inaugural flight at the Whitsunday Cost Airport on Tuesday morning.

With flights starting from just $49, Bonza aims to be here for ‘Allstralia’ and will open the Whitsundays up to new markets that would not have previously been able to access or afford a holiday to the region.

The new low-cost airline will also allow Whitsunday residents to fly directly to Sunshine Coast, Toowomba and Newcastle, opening up more opportunity to visit family and friends in previously unconnected areas.

LOST LADY SEEKS KIND DRIVER

Editor’s Note

Hi Everyone,

It was a great privilege to be nominated for an Australia Day Award this year and I was deeply honoured to walk alongside the other nominees at last week’s ceremony.

When I was made aware of my nomination for Citizen of the Year, however, I have to admit to you that I felt like a complete fraud.

What had I actually ‘done’ for my community this year?

Who had I served? What exceptional impact had I made?

Citizen of the Year is usually reserved for someone who has achieved something amazing, contributed in some incredible way or volunteered hours of their own free time for the greater good.

I had done none of this and, as a result, when I received my nomination, I felt like a fraud.

I was so embarrassed about others seeing me as a fraud as well that I barely told anyone, not even my workmates.

As the ceremony loomed, I

hoped that I’d be forgotten, and I even tried to wriggle out of attending the presentations stating that I would prefer to take photos for the paper instead.

On the day I felt like a complete imposter, but then I was welcomed by the Council staff and assured that I did have a place there and that I was deserving of the nomination. When I went up on stage with the other nominees, no-one was surprised to see me, in fact, the Mayor even smiled like she was glad I’d been nominated.

I now realise that even if it is just one person who sees the light in you, whose life you touch in such a meaningful way that they think to nominate you for an award – well that is plenty enough.

“Be the light you wish to see in the world” adapted from Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote

When Harry Russell was returning home from work earlier this week, he spotted an elderly lady walking around at the end of his road looking lost.

Deciding to pull over and ask if she was ok, he was informed that she needed to get back up the hill, so he offered her a lift.

The lady gladly accepted, and the pair drove up the hill.

When Harry asked where she lived, however, the lady suddenly looked confused.

“She started giving me addresses for streets in England,” said Harry.

“And that’s when I realised, she must be living with dementia.”

With Harry’s own nan also living with dementia, he could recognise the signs and so he gently offered to help her look for her home instead.

“I was driving her around for about an hour and a half!” said

Harry.

“By the end I think we’d driven down every street in Airlie Beach and then we came round a corner, and it was like a fog cleared and she said – ‘that’s my house!’”

Fortunately, a neighbour was home at the time and was able to look after the elderly woman until her daughter came home.

“We ended up having a really good talk when we were driving around and had a few giggles together,” said Harry.

“Any decent person would have made sure she got home safe and if it was my nan then I hope someone would have done the same for her.”

Harry is the proud owner of WhitCool Air Conditioning –a local company that services and supplies air-conditioning, both domestic and commercial.

He is also a really good person.

TAFE’s Agriculture Centre Of Excellence Opens In Bowen

For the first time in Bowen TAFE’s history, a range of specialist courses in agriculture will be available thanks to its brand-new $3.4 million upgrade which was celebrated with the opening of its Agriculture Centre Of Excellence on Tuesday.

The facility will offer advanced technology which includes a Farmbot for robotics, nutrition, soil science, biology and coding; and there’s a Growpod for monitoring stable growing environments and producing horticultural and agricultural products in all climates.

There will also be a virtual reality room providing advanced technology for emerging industry needs and a science lab.

The facility also has remotely monitored and controlled technology and devices, so that Bowen students can connect to the Rural Centre of Excellence on the Toowoomba TAFE campus.

Councillor Michelle Wright attended the opening and was excited to receive a full

tour of the facilities, allowing her an insight into the high-tech modern working spaces that students can now enjoy.

“It will be a fantastic place for growing new skills and I don’t think kids today are necessarily aware of the different careers you can have in agriculture,” she said.

“Being the salad bowl of the state, we are in a really good place to help and assist our local growers.

“This facility will be a game-changer for Bowen and the agriculture industry as a whole.”

Jobs Queensland predicts agriculture industry jobs in the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday and Townsville regions will increase by more than 10 per cent from 2020-21 to 2024-25 employing more than 10,300 workers.

The new facility in Bowen will be able to cater for this substantial growth and will be able to upskill and educate a thriving local workforce.

Mother Resuscitates Four-Year-Old After Near

Drowning On Hamilton Island

RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter transported a four-year-old boy to hospital after he was found unresponsive at the bottom of a pool on Hamilton Island at 1.06pm on Tuesday, January 25.

The child – who was swimming in the main resort pool – reportedly gave his goggles to his mother on the side of the pool before disappearing once she turned her back.

He was then found unresponsive at the bottom of the pool’s shallow end.

The mother, a midwife, was able to pull him from the water and commence resuscitation, according to a CQ Rescue Helicopter spokesperson.

“[RACQ Rescue] happened to be in the right place at the right time, having already landed at the airport on the island to transport another patient to medical care on the mainland,” the spokesperson said.

“The chopper medical team were alerted to the near drowning and rushed to the pool immediately to recover the child, who was by now conscious, and transfer him and his mother to hospital in Mackay.”

Queensland Ambulance Service reported the boy arrived at Mackay Hospital in stable condition and underwent further treatment post immersion treatment.

A Bonza Day For The Whitsundays

Continued from page 1.

The Whitsunday Coast Airport was buzzing with excitement on Tuesday morning when the highly anticipated Bonza flight touched down on schedule, bringing with it 160 passengers from its home base in the Sunshine Coast.

Chief Operating Officer of Whitsunday Coast Airport, Craig Turner, said this flight represented the beginning of a new era for local travel which will open our region up to 2.5 million people that would not otherwise be able to get here conveniently or cost-effectively.

“This is 15 months’ worth of negotiation, communication and organisation,” he said.

“We’ve built a magnificent relationship with Bonza and to see the first aircraft land and know that they are going to bring 134,000 seats to the Whitsundays is incredible.”

“It places us very well to exceed over 500,000 passengers this year which will be the first time in the 70-year history of the airport.”

Bonza Airlines will service 27 different routes across Australia, 17 of which went on sale last week.

93 per cent of these flight paths are not currently served by any other airline and 96 per cent currently have no low-cost carrier. Within two days of opening ticket sales, Bonza sold 10,000 seats, many of them booked for the Whitsundays.

Chief Commercial Officer of Bonza, Carly Hovey, said they chose to make their inaugural flight to the Whitsundays because of the warm welcome they were given when scouting locations the previous year.

“When we made the largest network announcement in Australia aviation history a year ago, we travelled to all our destinations,” said Carly.

“And when we came to the Whitsundays there were around 200 people that had come along to meet us, to thank us, and to explain what a difference it would make.”

“They all chanted Bonza for five minutes – the support has been phenomenal!”

Bonza airline is the only low-cost airline to launch in Australia in the last 15 years and its presence will make the market a much more competitive place.

All interactions, from ticket sales to in-flight meals, are only able to be made through the Bonza app and many other services are streamlined, sustainable and modern.

“This is a chance to fly like you’ve never been able to before,” said Carly.

“There are now choices that have never before been available, we thank you for your support, and we are delighted that we are here today to deliver on our commitment.”

Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Whitsundays, Rick Hamilton, said that a whole new market will now be able to visit the Whitsundays.

“When fares are maintained at such a low price it actually means there is a whole new customer coming into the region that wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to come here,” he explained.

“It’s a big injection for the region and we will see countless long-term benefits.”

Craig Turner said he has big plans for the future and that he is looking forward to opening even more routes with a variety of aircraft carriers over the coming year.

He hopes this will include a seasonal 10-week period of direct flights to Canberra.

“This will bring people up out of their winter, but it would also mean the Whitsundays could be the gateway to the snow!” he said.

Craft Brewer With Whitsunday Brewery Enters Administration

An independent Queensland-based craft beer company with a brewery in the Whitsundays has gone into voluntary administration, leaving locals wondering what’s next for its Cannonvale venue.

Ballistic Beer Co - which began its local operations in March 2021 after acquiring Whitsunday Island Brewing Company –announced the decision on Monday, stating it had suffered financially during the Covid pandemic and through a product recall late last year.

Speaking with an industry publication, The Crafty Pint, company co-founder David Kitchen said Ballistic hoped to remain trading after “a massive restructure”.

“The present intention is to continue trading,” Mr Kitchen told the publication.

“The aim of that VA [voluntary administration] is just to reorganise and restore the balance sheet. And we expect to be out of it in five weeks’ time, and onwards and upwards.

The company is a local favourite and national award winner, recently making it into the top 10 of GABS Hottest 100 Craft Beer countdown – one of the largest beer festivals in the world.

As well, it has garnered popularity locally for its Reef-themed beers and philanthropic donations to local charity Eco Barge Clean Seas.

Administrators at PKF Melbourne have been appointed for the company and in a statement said their present intention is to carry on Ballistic Beer Co’s activities and to continue trading.

“We are reviewing the company’s operations, activities and financial position to enable us to provide an opinion on the company’s future. It is expected that a proposal will be received and that, if accepted, will see the company continue into the future,” the PKF statement reads.

It has been confirmed that the administration will not be felt by its related companies, Ballistic Whitsundays included -- only Ballistic Beer Company and Ballistic Springfield will be impacted.

Mr Kitchen said in five weeks’ time, they expect “the company will be in a much better shape.”

“In the meantime, Ballistic will continue trading and our product is still available in venues and in bottle shops, national chains, and for wholesale. So that doesn’t change,” he said.

Local workers were contacted for comment.

New Docs On The Block

Two new doctors have just arrived at Bowen Hospital and the young couple say they are excited to embark on a career that not only brought them both from Singapore to Australia but also brought them together in love.

Ruo Han Ngian and Maxswen Gozali met as students at the University of Queensland (UQ) where they studied medicine.

“We met in our first semester in our tutorial group, and it was very easy to tell we were both Singaporean. We became friends and later in medical school we got together,” Ruo Han said. Following graduation, they decided to embark on a career in regional medicine after they graduated.

They are both excited about the opportunity to have their first rotation at Bowen Hospital and are looking forward to getting to know the staff, patients and the community.

“Everyone is so lovely and willing to help you, we think this will be a safe place to start our careers and that we will enjoy ourselves here,” Maxswen said.

For both Ruo Han and Maxswen, their

path to medicine began later in life.

Ruo Han was volunteering in a low-income estate where a lot of elderly people weren’t going to doctors because they were afraid of expensive healthcare or didn’t read English.

“I thought if I had the skill set to be a doctor, I could come to them and solve a small part of the problem. That’s the training that I wanted to equip myself with and it’s why I chose medicine,” she said.

Maxswen was working for his father when he realised he wanted to pursue a career that was more meaningful for him.

When he tried medicine, he realised he loved interacting with patients and learning from other doctors.

When they came to Australia, they fell in love with the country and decided to stay.

Ruo Han is now planning to follow either a career in a medical speciality or anaesthetics and Maxswen is interested in surgery or emergency medicine as long-term career options.

New Faces At The Boathouse Apartments

1 DOWN 1 TO GO

Making Your Region Yours With Councillor Clay Bauman

The Boathouse Apartments on the Port of Airlie is now under new management. Lea and Ross Andrews, from Victoria say that their family are thrilled to be managing the popular coastal-inspired holiday apartments.

Lea, who is an ex-school principal, and Ross, a registered builder by trade, decided to make a career and territory change to the sunny Whitsundays after pondering the idea for many years.

Having taken over the property from Mantra in June 2022, Ross and Lea manage the 32 holiday apartments at The Boathouse Apartments, which are now proudly independent, family-owned, and operated. “We are really hands-on people and are dedicated to ensuring every guest experience is the best that it can possibly be,” said Lea.

My commitment is to encourage and support a long-term vision for a vibrant and livable Whitsundays whilst keeping our unique visitor experience. I want to see more of the successful types of low-rise development that we had under our old town plan, and it is evident, with over ten times the number of people commenting on our planning scheme compared to the last consultation that the far majority of the public agree.

They are also working with a local interior designer to infuse a streamlined coastal theme across all rooms, with signature photography showcasing the local area.

“We are so close to the water, but you don’t need to walk up the hill to see it as all of our apartments have water facing balconies,” said Lea.

* (1707 accepted)

For the past few months, they have been steadily renovating the rooms together with brand-new beds, a new key system, free WIFI, and updated air-conditioning.

“The Boathouse Apartments is in an ideal location that is a few minutes’ walk from Airlie Beach town centre and the ferry terminal, almost everything you need is on our doorstep.”

Port of Airlie also boasts two cafes, two restaurants, a small selection of boutique shops, and a day spa.

It is no secret that the current lack of housing is having a negative effect on residents, rent affordability, our available work force and hindering us on taking full benefit of the recent regional boom. Not one major accommodation development has begun since our new town plan took effect.

Whilst COVID may have put us behind on delivery of some of our planned works, major projects such as Proserpine Entertainment Centre, Flagstaff Hill and Shute Harbour Terminal are open for business. While I’ve been enjoying interacting with Council Officers, I am also working on opening channels of communication with the State Government to lobby for the Whitsundays, especially concerning the Shute Harbour Road works, Shute Harbour boat ramp and Hamilton Plains upgrade.

Building affordable housing and more purpose-built accommodation for tourists is a must to keep our economy thriving, and employment within the region growing. Many low-rise developments require less funding to begin, could be finished quicker and be more likely to employ local contractors than the high-rise developments which seem to be supported by very few.

My place in Council is to do my best to make your region yours, and to help deliver the projects and plans which matter most to you. With budgeting for 23/24 underway, the one thing I need most, to do my job better, is feedback from you. So please feel free to get in touch with me.

I believe a better outcome would be facilitated by a clear, concise plan supported by the majority of our residents and visitors. As Councillors we must focus on the longterm objectives for our region, but our job isn’t just working together to set a strategic direction, it is to also serve and provide for your day to day lives, from footpaths to parkland and the Council core of roads, rubbish and rates.

Do you have scraps of metal left over from jobs? How about old electronic goods and metal household items cluttering up the garage? Or are you embarking on a new project and need off-cuts and inspiration to get you started?

Whether you are looking to sell, buy or simply ensure your metal is recycled and reused – Whitsunday Recyclers in Proserpine is the place to go for all local residents, tradies, and business owners in the Whitsunday Region.

You can either request a free scrap metal bin to be dropped off and picked up at your business premises or you can simply come down to the yard at 19 Anzac Road, Proserpine, and talk to the friendly team. The site is a treasure trove of metal goodies, and anyone is welcome to explore, search for items and make an offer.

Whitsunday Recyclers is a family-run business that was purchased by brother and sister team, Luke Purvis and Clare James, in December last year.

These long-term Proserpine locals are passionate about redirecting scrap metal from landfill and they have spent the last two months clearing the old cluttered yard so that customers will now experience an orderly and revived site with friendly and personal service.

“We are dedicated to diverting waste and providing an opportunity for everyone to recycle metal products so they don’t end up in landfill,” said Luke.

“We are helping to create change and are proud to provide the local community with a good local trader here in the Whitsundays.”

Brass, copper, aluminium, and any other type of metal can be processed through the site.

The products are then sold to larger companies, where they are further processed and re-manufactured into reusable materials.

At the Proserpine site, Luke, Clare and the team can receive a wide range of metal goods -from washing machines to air-conditioning units, electronic motors to old drainage piping – they will give you a fair price for every item and then process them down into raw metals before on-selling.

“You can find everything, and anything here – stainless steel benchtops, aluminium off-cuts, or even mesh for your chook pens!” said Clare

Simply browse the on-site shop or ask the friendly team for some advice, they will be sure to greet you with a smile and help you with anything you need.

How

can Whitsunday Recyclers help you?

• Free bins for trades and businesses –regular drop-off and pick-up of scrap metal

• Bring in your old metal household items and receive a fair price in exchange

• Complete a home project by shopping for scrap metal at their on-site store

• Free bins for farmers so they can complete post crush shed clean-outs

Perfect Score For SeaLink

Celebrating its first year in business on a high note, SeaLink Whitsundays has just announced that they have received 100 per cent five-star customer reviews on TripAdvisor and Google Business Listings over the past 12 months. The company’s Big Island Day Tour has proven popular with tourists who are looking to explore the islands in comfort on a vessel that is spacious and deliberately booked at less than capacity so that guests can enjoy a leisurely day without the crowds.

“What makes our cruise different is our passenger numbers are capped for maximum comfort with space to roam around each of the three levels to get the best vantage point,” said General Manager for SeaLink Whitsundays, Mr Rob Mitchell.

“Our vessel is also airconditioned for ex-

tra comfort and guests enjoy a premium lunch, morning and afternoon tea on board as part of the package.”

SeaLink has also recently added a half-day tour experience, Purely Whitehaven, with the choice of a morning or afternoon departure where guests get to spend more time enjoying Whitehaven Beach.

Mr Mitchell says that the team are thrilled to achieve the perfect customer experience scorecard from passengers and that it is a testament to the premium service provided by the entire SeaLink Whitsundays team.

“It is always great to read such positive feedback from our guests,” he said.

“The positive comments and ratings further fuel our drive and passion to continue delivering and growing our brilliant customer service and experience offerings.”

COUNCIL CAUGHT UP IN THE GREEN SPACE DEBATE

The recent sale of Council owned ‘green space’ has caused concern among a local environmental organisation that believes our small patches of grassland should be protected from development for the benefit of the community.

Tony Fontes, from the Whitsunday Conservation Council, said that he was shocked to see so many pieces of natural land sold to developers without public consultation.

“Is our Council so out of step with the importance of urban green space that selling our urban parks to developers is on the cards? Unbelievably, the answer is yes,” he said.

“It seems that the Council is so focused on development at all costs, they have forgotten the community.”

Mr Fontes points out that green spaces make urban environments more liveable by regulating temperatures, reducing runoff, increasing biodiversity, and decreasing flood risks.

He also states that parkland stimulates social cohesion and supports physical fitness and activities.

A Council spokesperson said that Whitsunday Regional Council also values green spaces within the community and currently has an urban green space network composed of over 129 hectares of recreation parks, 370 hectares of sporting facilities, and 278 hectares of nature reserves.

The spokesperson confirmed, however, that several vacant lots zoned residential and commercial had been identified for sale in November.

“These sites do not have a role in the greenspace network to help meet desired standards of service or the lifestyle and environmental needs of our community,” said the spokesperson.

“The identified blocks don’t have a role due to their small size, location in proximity to more suitable parkland, lack of biodiversity, and lack of recreational infrastructure.

“No existing parklands currently utilised by the community are part of the sale.”

Council states that it would prefer to spend money on further invigorating or increasing the services of recreational assets in larger regional and district parks, as studies have shown they have a greater attraction value that encourages people to get outdoors.

With these factors in mind, Council de-

cided to shed surplus land assets that don’t have a role in promoting lifestyle or environmental benefits in the greenspace network.

They believe this will allow for more funds to re-investment in parks that will benefit the community further.

The land parcels that Council is selling, include:

• 2 Sinclair Street, Bowen

• 82-92 Santa Barbara Parade, Bowen

• 9D Dalrymple Street, Bowen

• 27-29 Queens Street, Bowen

• 31-33 Queens Street, Bowen

• Lot 5 King Street, Bowen

• 1 Industrial Road, Collinsville

• 42 Carlo Drive, Cannonvale

Reef Experts Assemble To Share Knowledge

More than 100 experts and leaders within the environmental management space converged in Cairns for the annual Reef Synthesis workshop to discuss the ongoing protection of the Great Barrier Reef.

Covering an immense area, over 1.3 times the size of New Zealand, ensuring the health and protection of the Reef is no small task and requires engagement and input from a diverse range of stakeholders, including government agencies, research organisations, natural resource management bodies, traditional owners, landholders and peak industry bodies.

The Reef Synthesis provided stakeholders with the opportunity to present findings, create partnerships and learn from each other to ensure best management of the Reef.

Held over three days in November last year, the workshop’s focus was ‘Connecting people, programs and landscapes’ and covered a range of topics such as enabling environments for improving practice, understanding Traditional Owner priorities and creating a vision for success, accountability and legacy. A number of representatives from the Whitsunday and Mackay region attended, including Bernie Cock-

ayne, Program Manager for Reef Catchments in Mackay -

‘The workshop was a great opportunity to learn about work being conducted across the Reef. What I found most interesting was the work that many of our farmers, Traditional Owners and community organisations are doing to improve our Reef’s health. This included Jason Bradford, a farmer between Mackay and Sarina, who

we’ve been working with to improve the health of wetlands on his property and the water quality entering the Reef. It was fantastic to see his hard work being acknowledged by receiving the Reef Conservation Champion Award’.

With such a prized and valued asset for Australia and the world, bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders is essential to learn from each other and build part-

nerships for the protection of the Great Barrier Reef.

One of seven natural wonders of the world, the World Heritage Listed area of the Great Barrier Reef covers a staggering 348,000kms2 starting from north of Bundaberg in the south to the tip of Cape York in the north, a distance of approximately 2,300kms. The world heritage area includes 980 islands, 3000 coral reefs and extends from depths of over 2,000m to the intertidal zone and seagrass meadows found along the coastline, including our own Whitsunday Coast.

For more information on the work being undertaken locally to manage the Reef, please visit Reef Catchments www.reefcatchments.com.au

ABSOLUTE TRUTH Your User Manual Of Life For Life

Bringing together three years of careful research, two years of dedicated writing and a lifetime of curiosity, local author Joab Russo, is proud to present his book Absolute Truth to audiences across the world.

Originally from Israel, Joab moved to Australia in 2006 with his young family in order to escape the political unrest and fear of terrorism in his home country.

As an Information Technology Specialist, he was granted a Skilled Migration Visa and was able to enjoy a successful career using his expertise in the field.

A calling to help others and a desire to explore the meaning of existence, however, led Joab on a path of discovery that culminated in the completion of his first book, Absolute Truth, in 2018.

“Finding issues and solving them is a passion of mine and I really wanted to do that on a personal level as well - I really wanted to do that with people - to connect with people and to help them,” he said. “This book is a culmination of insights

and understanding of spiritual and existential information that I have discovered and tested and verified throughout the years.”

Joab researched his book for three years and spent a further two years writing it to ensure it displayed the information efficiently and with quality in mind.

“I believe it provides the most undistorted, accurate and correct existential information available,” he explained.

“It is independent of any bias, any thought, any perception, any emotion, any belief – it is absolutely correct and accurate information about who, when, why and how you are at any present moment – it explains how only you choose and create your own reality.”

The book is divided into three sections and uncovers the mechanics of existence through theory, questioning mass beliefs and then applying the ideas to your own life.

Joab has sold over 1000 copies so far and he is currently working on

translating the text into 12 different languages.

He is also writing a fictional fantasy novel which uses the information he collected and the insights he imparted in his first book to present the evidence in a different way through a story.

You can purchase Absolute Truth online in English, Italian and French.

POTHOLE PARADE

On Monday Dad drove off to work, Zig-zagging down the street, Avoiding potholes in the road, Believe me, quite a feat!

He darted left, he darted right, While others did the same, Missing just by inches, In the blinding, pouring rain.

When Shakespeare asked the question, “What’s in a name?”

(“Romeo and Juliet’) he was referring to the idea that names themselves are a convention to distinguish things or people, but themselves do not have any worth or meaning. But pioneering families of Proserpine, after whom the vast majority of early streets are named, might just beg to differ.

But while, most of the older street names in our district have a strong connection to the early movers and shakers in the area, the origin of name “Main Street” is a somewhat different story.

The first settlers in the Proserpine district were graziers. Soon the area now known as Proserpine town was encircled by cattle stations. Inside the circle of cattle properties was rich agricultural land through which the river flowed. Dense scrub covered the land between the river and what is now known as Faust Street, with giant blue gums and Moreton Bay ash extending all the way to Glen Isla and Breadalbane. The township developed rapidly after the establishment of the sugar mill, the opening of the railway between Bowen and Proserpine in 1910 and the completion of the Mackay/Proserpine rail link in 1923.

When it came time to map the town, for surveyors F Walker (a master of bushcraft who had traversed a great part of Qld in his capacity as first commander of native police and was friendly with the aboriginal people who respected and trusted him), J Chapman, W Crompton, O’Con-

nell and others, it was a marathon job. They camped out in all kinds of weather, walked through long grass, swamps, gullies scrub, uphill and down. The first land selected and surveyed was Portion 193 which comprised all land between the river and Main Street and extended from Faust’s corner (where the Reject Shop is now located) to Glen Isla.

Main Street was the centre of the business area. By 1901, there were three hotels, a butcher, baker, two blacksmiths, a post and telegraph office, police station, one church and an assembly hall for entertainment purposes. In wet weather, the constant traffic of horse and sulky and horse and bullock teams with huge loads turned the street into a quagmire. In 1908, it was felt that the street needed to be improved to make it more weather proof and that it was also time for a name for the thoroughfare because Main Street was considered too vague. For the time being, however, the name remained.

It wasn’t until 1922 that the idea for a name for Main Street was once again raised at the suggestion of the manager of the Australian Bank of Commerce, Mr Spencer Briggs. Not all agreed but Robert Shepherd, Chairman of the Proserpine Shire Council, donated one guinea for a competition among the school children

to submit a name for the street and head teacher, Mr Walke, arranged the competition.

At a council meeting in May 1922, however, the council decided not change the name of Main Street but Mr Shepherd still wished to honour his offer of a guinea to the competition’s winner.

And so, the story goes … One child, who was apparently confused as to what the competition was all about, got no further than writing “Main Street” at the top of her sheet of paper when the entries were collected by the teacher. Needless to say, this young pupil was very surprised to be the winner of the competition and to receive the one guinea!

“What’s in a name?”

Story and photo courtesy Proserpine Historical Museum.

Dad saw the shadow on the road, He thought it was just water. Unknown to him, the biggest hole, It really was a snorter.

Too late, the wheels had reached the edge, Dad yelled out, “Bloody Hell!” The car sank slowly out of sight, Creating quite a swell.

Dad fought his way out of the car Till, standing on the top, He reared up from the roadway Giving others quite a shock.

Swerving cars and screeching tyres Flashed by Dad’s popping eyes, He said more prayers that moment Than he’d said in all his life!

On shaking legs he tottered home To wash off all the mud. He thought he’d take the day of work To recover down the pub.

“But where’s the car?” the family said, “You didn’t bring it home.” Dad snorted, “Well I’d say by now, The Pope’s driving it in Rome!”

Steven Spielberg has crafted his newest and most personal film, the Fabelmans, with the grace of his cumulative decades earnt in a lifetime of filmmaking.

The highest-grossing director in cinematic history can now, perhaps, claim his final mastery of the medium -- no director has ploughed more creative ground. A staggering 33 feature films are behind him in his career (and hundreds of producing credits, too), the only place left to create from was his experience; looking back across the field of years to find where his sense of self came from.

In The Fabelmans, Spielberg creates a memoir of his upbringing in the 1950s in New Jersey – close to truth yet maudlinly toned. Here, Sammy Fabelman, a thinly veiled Spielberg stand-in, finds his early, burgeoning love for cinema after watching Cecil B Demille’s The Greatest Show on Earth. His passion for filmmaking erupts and we continue to follow Sammy through his life, through family drama, and until his inevitable success.

It is a coming-of-age story through and through and allows Spielberg to show off his best asset: the playing up of childhood’s

saccharin nature, its naivety and glowing perspective of the world, of new things –something he has done more deftly than any director before or since. Spielberg has mastered the so sweet it hurts your teeth, somehow it is never cloying. It is an ode to childhood, to loss of innocence, to passion and art, and the complexity of familial dynamics and love.

“Most of my movies have been a reflection of things that have happened to me,” Spielberg said. “But in the sense of The Fabelmans, it wasn’t about metaphor, it was

about memory.”

Here is presented what we all fall in love with on the big screen: exceptional cinema that shows us ourselves. It stands on its own on two fronts; as an autobiographical, self-critical insight into a cultural figure, and as a piece of movie magic that is true to the human spirit.

THE SPORTS BAR ATMOSPHERE At the Pub

It’s game day and The Pub is packed: the fever pitch rises at every kick, every crunching tackle, every catch. And a silence descends; only a few huddled gasps and whispered encouragements -- “Go, you good thing!”

Then the roar of the crowd.

Every day and every night at the Airlie Beach Hotel’s Sports Bar, the big screen is filled with football, with fights, with bat and ball sports. And its atmosphere is always unmatched, it’s like being in the stadium.

And what’s on the menu? The full sporting scope.

The picks of the bunch from the early parts of this year have been the Australian Open (Djokovic’s win producing a groan from the Australian crowd), the A-League and Premier League, ODI Cricket and T20, and the NBA, NBL, and UFC.

Airlie Beach Hotel Sports Bar manager, Mathew Rowley, said it’s been a sporting start to the year – and they’re looking forward to more variety courtesy of their patrons.

“Any sport you can think of, we’ll put it on,” Rowley said.

“We don’t care if it’s hopscotch! If we can find a channel, it’s up on the big screen, ready to go. The atmosphere in here is incredible when there’s sport going.”

Rowley said the biggest event so far is the upcoming 2023 Super Bowl on Monday, February 13, one of the world’s largest sporting events which he said is ready to take over Airlie Beach’s largest sports screen – a nine by two metre mammoth that covers the length of an entire wall.

It’s certainly going to be a game to remember for football fans, too, with The Philadelphia Eagles taking on the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl LVII – the second time in six seasons for the Philadelphia team.

They come into the game as slight favourites –and it’s easy to see why, any American Football Fan will have witnessed the dominating NFC title game where the Philly side ran riot against the 49ers.

At The Pub, the day will kick off early at 9am with the Sports Bar operating in the morning hours thanks to a special license, so there’s plenty of time to grab a few drinks before the 9.30am start.

And you won’t want to miss this: Rowley will be hosting and dishing out Free Hot Chicken Wings all morning – his shout!

There’s no better atmosphere in town to experience one of the world’s biggest sporting events and the feel of prime-time football.

Grab yourself a freshly poured beer Stein of your choice and settle in for the Super Bowl –and plenty of other sports coming up this year.

Ash Smith Performing In Paradise

Here is a story as old as music: the travelling artist - guitar strapped to their back - arrives in a beachside town with song on their lips. And they never leave.

Airlie Beach has become a rest home for more musicians and maestros, more bards and bands than it may have any right to –it is a place polished in creativity, in which artists have scraped at the sheen, hoping to keep a piece for themselves.

It is breezy. Here is the sound of it: water lapping with low sounds at the beachside, the acoustic guitar playing alongside it, as easy as the wind. Airlie Beach connects to the soft sensibility of some artistic core. Yet, Airlie offers another side to its cruisy village aesthetic: -- it has a raucous, party-boy heart found in places like KCs, Magnums, Boaty’s. It is manifold, like life. At one time serene and another rowdy. And it also has a community.

Ash Smith is one of Airlie Beach’s musicians - part of a long tradition - who has found a home here far from his own.

Most people in Airlie Beach are from somewhere else. Ash is no different: he is a native son of Lisburn in Northern Ireland, having arrived in Airlie Beach six years ago, bringing with him his music from across the globe.

And he is Airlie Beach to a tee, part of its musical fabric: he embraces the swelling sounds of the seaside but can rock it out with the best.

Like all the Beach’s musicians, he has a story:

“I’ve been in a few different bands in my life: one called Whanau, which means family in Maori, and a grunge band, ‘Smoking Tongue’. I’ve always been a big fan of Pearl Jam, Allice in Chains, Soundgarden, and chilled out music like Pink Floyd and Ben

Howard. I started gigging around in my early-20s and ended up going to the United States, to New Zealand, and eventually here,” Ash said.

“I was just travelling and if you’re a travelling muso, what’re you going to do? You’re going to play music. And when I came to Airlie Beach to watch another band, and I was gigging around and I couldn’t say anything but yes to living here.

“I was luckily offered a sponsorship from Total Entertainment, and it was a yes, straight away – no hesitation. I still work closely with them today. They’re fantastic. At the time, I was working down in Mackay hauling cane for the visa and then coming up here to play on the weekends. It was an amazing life. I think most of the musicians that come here are the same; they end up loving the place and then finding a community.”

With a repertoire of covers and his origi-

nals, Ash has become one of Airlie’s longstanding artists in the music scene. He’s performed everywhere and says it allows him to enjoy both sides of his music –which are also both sides of Airlie.

“Playing music makes me feel good. If anything bad is s happening in your life, you can get lost in it; it clears everything up,” he said.

“On some nights, you’re feeling the slow, intimate stuff and others you’re ready to go hard. I play everywhere – it’s a nice mix of vibes from one to the next. It’s a sevennight-a-week kind of place for musicians. It’s awesome.

“The music scene in Airlie Beach is great, and the original scene is picking up. It’s a great place to write music – it’s a great place to do anything.”

Sourced from an ancient inland ocean that is estimated to be 100 million years old, each individually cut and collected opal is completely unique and it is their swirling sparkles and transient shades of turquoise that make them so special.

Over 95 per cent of the world’s opals are from Australia and we are lucky enough to have one of the most prestigious suppliers based right here in Airlie Beach.

Having uncovered a $1.2 million treasure trove of opals on a hunt that was documented in a reality TV series on the Discovery Channel, owner of Opal Earth Sofia Andreou, looks forward to welcoming you to her local store.

For the past 62 years, the Andeou family has been a prominent name in the opal industry and each custom-made, award-winning ready-made piece of jewelry is hand-crafted by experts that the family has a long-standing relationship with.

Shop Manager, Joseph King, said that an opal is one of the most magical gems to give a loved one for any special occasion, especially Valentine’s Day.

“Of all the stones in all the world, the only thing more beautiful than the opal is the ladies that wear it,” he said.

“While a diamond might be a girl’s best, an opal is a lady’s best friend.”

Every customer at Opal Earth will be welcomed into the store and treated to personal service that can assist everyone from an opal connoisseur to a novice looking for something special.

From necklaces to pendants, earrings to rings, bracelets, and almost anything your heart desires - whatever your taste, passion, or persuasion, you can find it at Opal Earth.

How to pick the perfect piece:

• Find out what style she likes – you can choose between a light or a dark gem and each piece holds every colour of the rainbow

Would she prefer a gold or silver setting, perhaps check other pieces of jewellery she owns

If purchasing a ring, quietly find out your loved one’s ring size, you can bring another ring in if you like

Again, that day sneaks up on us. What to do this year? Picnic in the park? Candlelit dinner for two? A bed of red rose petals spilling across the floor? No – no, not all that again. That’s a lot of picking up roses later.

If you’re bereft of ideas for Valentine’s Day – oh, that sweet, sweet, sneaky day – you’re lucky you live in a picture-perfect paradise; a postcard place, brimming with choices for the romantic.

Take your lover for a dip in turquoise waters that sparkle like diamonds, perhaps? Walk by a tropical forest while swaying lines of palm trees are a rhythmic serenade of your love song.

There are few places that can rival the Whitsundays in romantic regard. So, on Valentine’s Day in the Whitsundays, sing your own symphony of love in a dream destination.

These are some of the best things to do on Valentine’s Day in the Whitsundays:

1. Whitehaven Beach: One of the best beaches in the world is the perfect place for couples to relax, swim and soak up the sun. Pack a picnic and take it beachside for the day.

2. Enjoy a spa day: For couples seeking a more relaxed pace, head to the spa to unwind and rejuvenate. The Whitsundays offers a range of luxurious spa experiences, ensuring that you leave feeling refreshed and reinvigorated.

No Better Time Than The Present To Kick Some Goals

The Whitsunday Sports Expo kicks off this weekend at Whitsunday PCYC, inviting locals to come along and find out about junior and adult sporting opportunities in the region. With over 30 team and individual sports on show at the Whitsunday Sportspark, there’s no better opportunity to find your passion, keep fit, or meet a community of likeminded people.

Sport can be a support system for life, providing friendship, competition, exercise, and drive. For kids, it presents them with a gamified version of skills development, of teamwork, and with the opportunity to make lifelong friends – or even potentially make a career of it!

For adults, sport holds the same opportunities: camaraderie, keying into your ambition, and the all-important exercise – which we might not always find the time for.

Australia, and Queensland in particular, are sport mad – and for good reason. Whether your sport of choice be one of individual development (karate, weightlifting, swimming), where your goal is to be the best you every day, or team oriented (football, rugby, netball, and more). There’s plenty to pick from and to start kicking goals.

Chairman of the Whitsunday Sportspark,

Justin Butler, said that its time to get active and get healthy – “get amongst your community”.

“Find out more about the amazing local sports we have available here in this area. Joining a club is a positive step for any family and a great way to start the new year,” Justin said.

Sports from across the entire spectrum will be on display at the Whitsunday Sports Expo this weekend – come and have a kick, ride a trail bike, explore a sailing bit, or tee off!

It is stated that 3.5 billion people are football fans.

Fans of The World Game, The Beautiful Game, what in Australia we call soccer -- the largest sport on the globe; in fact, we are floating on an enormous football itself. It is the “sport of sports”, the most popular pastime, our most enduring as a species.

It has everything: displays of tactical brilliance, astounding athleticism, and suspense. More than one could ask for in a viewing experience, and even greater from a playing perspective.

The Whitsundays is home to its own football team: the “Tangerines”, better known as Whitsunday United Football Club. A club going from strength to strength, fielding several senior men, women, and youth teams from under 13 to under 16. The favourite sport for kids across the world for its ease that belies its depth, like an iceberg – “Football is simple, but it’s difficult to play simply” - the only objective is to score more than the opposition. It is not a strange thing to say that most people, once they’ve tried football, fall in love with it.

At the local team, that is no different. You will find devotees of the sport that have fallen in love with both the team and the

sport – whether they be new to it or returning.

And even better, Whitsunday United are the reigning Champions of the Region in their men’s division and is already on the recruitment drive for this year.

The men’s team training has already begun, as well as some of its junior teams, and they’ll be soon joined by the Senior Women.

Home games are played at the Whitsunday Sports Park on Saturdays throughout the day, with away matches in Mackay.

The men’s and women’s squads work over two teams, with one premier division team and reserve grade. For players of all levels, there’s a place at Whitsunday United, with coaches more than accommodating for those new or returning to the game.

Aside from the fitness, the competitive nature, and the fun of the sport, Whitsunday United have an exceptionally welcoming culture – one that encompasses each of their teams and the administration of the club.

There’s nothing like football, and there’s nothing like Whitsunday United.

Follow the Whitsunday United Instagram and Facebook pages for updates on training schedules, gamedays, and more.

What better time is there to dip your toes in the water than when you’re a kid?

When you’re young, it is easier to learn something new – an irrefutable fact. When they’re little, human beings are like sponges; there’s no better time than that of flowering youth to get in the water and soak it in.

The award-winning Airlie Beach Swim School by Danielle is the place by the pool for bubs and kids to dive in and have their first experience with water.

The Whitsundays’ premier swimming school is host to a team of professionalswho provide some of the finest swimming classes in the region – to ensure anyone can enjoy the waters that the Whitsundays offers.

Owner and founder Danielle Shea leads the team with her ethos that every child and adult should know how to swim: “Not only is it an important skill, but it allows them to experience the region to its fullest.”

“Not every family has a pool, but every family will visit the lagoon or the beach and spend birthday parties in the water. And living in Australia, it’s surrounded

by it – every child should learn to swim,” Danielle said.

But, The Swim Australia Teacher of the Year for 2020 said that it’s never too late to learn or to even just enjoy the benefits of swimming.

“It’s the number one survival skill that anyone should learn, especially living here in the Whitsundays when you’re surrounded by water,” she said.

“We have everything from mums and bub classes where we guide them through the journey of learning how to swim, as well as juniors and adults, including Aqua Fit and Hydrotherapy.”

The school takes the development of its students – no matter their age – seriously, giving them the confidence to spread their flippers and swim, especially when it comes to introducing first-timers to the wonders of the water.

The team of experts at Airlie Beach Swim School is there to guide you to becoming your best swimmer, with safety at the heart of all their training.

If you would like to learn how to swim, or join up for Aqua Fit or Hydrotherapy, check out https://airliebeachswimschool. com.au/

Cannonvale Cannons’ Big Week

Canecutters Close Finish Against Warriors, Valley Lose Out To Colts

CRICKET

The region’s T20 Premiers Colts took on Valleys while Canecutters faced off against Warriors in the cricket season’s 40-over A Side competition last weekend.

Valleys were off to a slow start having opted to bat first after winning the toss. Roy Blain (1/17) made the early breakthrough with Ricky Parslow (13) gloving legside delivery through to the keeper.

mann (1/0) combined to mop up the lower order to see Valleys bowled out for 140.

The Colts struggled in their run chase as Machlin Turner (4/20), despite having 5 dropped catches off his bowling, combined with Ricky Parslow (3/20) to wreak havoc with Ricky at one stage having every fielder on the ground in the slips cordon.

cession. Josh Large (41) was the only player to show any form with the bat as Warriors were bundled out for 99 runs.

The Cannonvale Cannons had 42 swimmers participate in last week’s Club Night, and a further 19 competing across the state at the Mirani LC Transition Meet and three others at Townsville Brothers’ carnival.

Congratulations to swimmers who set 19 new Club Records, including Jacob Bell, Jy Parkinson, Remy Hedges, Eloise Chegwidden, Jax Clayworth, and Don Algie.

Tora Delac was presented with the Swim Star Award and congratulations are extended to Sophie Fletcher and Charlie Doherty for winning the Chocolate Awards.

Upgrade certificates were presented to Andie Reynolds, Dylan Reynolds, Zach Trefz, Alex Trefz, Alessa Penglase-Fortunato, Billie Jamieson, and Murphy Jamieson.

The three Harland sisters swam extremely well in Townsville over the weekend. Indigo Harland, aged six, performed excellently in her 25-metre Backstroke and 25-metre Freestyle.

Eight-year-old Koa was very excited with her three blue rib-

bons, claiming them for a first in her 50-metre Butterfly, 50-metre Breaststroke, and 50-metre Backstroke.

Ruby, aged 10, was impressive, too, swimming personal bests in all her races and finishing second in her 50-metre Breaststroke.

Club Coaches Ken Crittenden and Mark Erickson would like to commend all the swimmers who competed at Mirani on Saturday: “Birthday Boy” Don Algie, Eloise Chegwidden, Harry Chegwidden, Jax Clayworth, Zane Clayworth, Harris Delac, Tora Delac, Declan Dichiera, Maeve Dichiera, Jack Ganter, Thomas Ganter, Nelson Malady, Celeste Orenshaw, Isaac Pisaniello, Isabella Pisaniello, Adelaide Sanders, Indianna Smith, and Alex and Zach Trefz.

A further congratulations to Jax Clayworth, Nelson Malady, Isaac Pisaniello, Don Algie, Thomas Ganter, and Tora Delac for swimming so well in their Skins event. The club extends its thanks to the wonderful parents and volunteers who assisted with officiating and managing the team.

Airlie Beach Parkrun

This week 49 committed people ran, jogged, and walked the five-kilometre waterfront course in the rain at Airlie Beach parkrun.

Special mentions from this week go to Michala and Angela, who completed their first parkruns. As well, Josh, Chris, and Isla recorded new personal bests.

The event was made possible by run director Dan and his team of 17 dedicated volunteers: Peter, Nick, Kara, Suzi, Wade, Paige (photographer), Charlie (photographer), Wendy, Ron, Susanne, Shane, Laura, Louise, Jarrod, Lynne, and Dennis.

Next week at Airlie Beach parkrun, the kids will be taking over. Under adult supervision youngsters will be the volunteers that make parkrun happen.

Jackson Riley (1/25) added his name to the wicket column shortly after to see Valleys looking somewhat shaky at 2/35 after 8 overs. Brad Wilkinson (30) steadied the ship with hard hitting Machlin Turner (46) to put Valleys back on the front foot.

The pair combined for a 57-run partnership before Michael Pettiford (4/48) caused all sorts of problems for Valleys middle order.

Mace Bennett (29) added some later order hitting before Nathaniel Kleinert (1/22), Ben Altmann (1/7) and Lachy Alt-

Michael Pettiford (48) and Ben Valmadre (37) tried their best to see Colts over the line, however it wasn’t to be as Tony Hinschen (3/8) quickly ran through the tail to see Colts all out for 115. In the other match, Warriors won the toss and elected to bat and never managed to get their innings going. Youngsters Darcy Milne (2/23) and Donny Pettiford (0/21) more than matched it with their older counterparts to start the bowling onslaught. Not to be outshone by his son, Scott Milne (3/9) combined with fellow old timer Craig Brown (4/16) to send Warriors players back to the shed in quick suc-

Liam Davies (39) and Darcy Milne (28) were out to make light work of the total, with the pair putting on 60 runs in the opening partnership before Craig Valmadre (2/14), rolling the arm over for the first time in a number of years, sent both opening batsman on their way. Dan Leschke (1/6) managed to add his name to the wicket column before Canecutters got over the line with a comfortable seven wicket win.

This Saturday will see Warriors taking on The Colts and Valleys to meet Canecutters.

Games are set to get underway at 12.30pm. Any new or returning players can contact Dale Mengel (0410 895 191) or Craig Brown (4945 1983) for further information.

The Whitsundays Newest Organised Sport

Anew sport has arrived in the Whitsundays as a group of local enthusiasts hosted an open day on Sunday, inviting sailors and land lubbers alike to come and try their hand at racing a “blokart”.

A contingent of small, one-design carts scooting around the sands of Conway beach last weekend were the subject of raised eyebrows, as the Whitsunday Blokart Club held an open day.

So, what is Blokarting? The newest official Whitsunday sport is a form of cart racing where riders take a compact land yacht –or better explained, like a tiny boat with wheels – and race them on the beach. These three-wheeled land yachts have a range of sails which are selected on the day to match the wind conditions and the weight and experience of the sailor.

It is a sport suitable for all ages – particularly for recreation - and twelve attendees were out in force for the club’s open day on Sunday. Plenty of whom were experienced sailors.

These high-performance machines are built to a strict one design format in production form, with additional items allowed on the performance models.

Justyn Durbin, Jimmy Millar, Dave Thomas, and Brad Low. Third group on 46 points went to Andy Farrow, Dave Dodds, Jordan DeMamiel, and Jackson. Nearest to the pin were Deeray Fo’ou, Danny York, Jake Day, and Tim Harris.

Our Sunday Monthly medal was a terrific turn out. Taking First place was Deeray Fo’ou on a 47 nett c/b, second place was Jake Day on another 47 nett and taking third place was Perri Simpson on a 50 nett. Nearest the pin was Danny York and Tim Harris.

This Sunday will be our Stableford 18-hole competition tee of anytime. Contributed with thanks to Whitsunday Green

A short course was set up along the beach, ensuring that everyone kept a safe distance, and with the guidance of long term blokarter, David Moore, there were smiles all around.

Whitsunday Blokart Club is the latest club to register with the Australian Blokarting Association, joining other Queensland clubs at Mackay, Yeppoon, Bundaberg, and Brisbane. There are several local beaches suitable for blokarts, including Conway, Bowen, and Cape Hillsborough, providing locals plenty of opportunity to play on the sand.

“The weather on Sunday made Conway Beach a perfect setting for the club’s open day,” Darren Archibald, president of the Whitsunday Blokart Club, said.

The club plans to run another open day

soon at a venue to be decided, but members can usually be found at Cape Hillsborough or Conway Beach most weekends when the tide is low.

A full program will be listed on the whitsundayblokarts.com.au website.

Sailing Report

Twilight Race: A south easterly greeted the 85 sailors in last week’s Wednesday twilight race conducted by Whitsunday Sailing Club.

10 knots of breeze and flat waters made for a lovely experience on the water after a week’s break.

Bobby’s Girl (Mark Beale) was first to cross the starting line, some 10 seconds late, and they were still well clear of the rest of the fleet.

It was the usual suspects at the front, with Bobby’s Girl leading QMS Ponyo (John Galloway), while Smooth Criminal (Leo Rodriguez) battled against Reignition (Charles Wallis) for the minor placings. Further back, Houdini (Rob Meizer) were delayed when a crew member missed his trapeze wire and ended up in the water.

Bobby’s Girl held on to score another line honours win, and on corrected time, QMS Ponyo took the honours from Reignition and Wide Load (Shannan Hart).

Wobbly Boot (Craig Piccinelli) led the fleet away in Division 3, with Seventh Heaven (Charlie Preen) and Aquatarius (Tom Parker) in pursuit. A near collision between Masquerade (Tom Vujasinovic) and Lama (James Hayes) was averted at the last moment, while Shiraz (John Cable) suffered a torn sail, delaying their progress until a replacement was set. Once underway, Wobbly Boot built a com-

fortable lead, while Aquatarius closed in on Seventh Heaven, getting within 30 seconds by the time they reached the finish. On corrected time, Seventh Heaven took the honours by 2 seconds from Norbert G (Ghigo Casalini), with Rossgo (Greg Hammon) a distant third.

Races continue every Wednesday from 4:30pm, with limited crewing positions available. Those wishing to participate as crew need to be at the club by 2:30 pm (limited spots available).
