Proserpine Café owner Joanne Klose has returned from a sensational trip to Uganda and she cannot wait to tell the Whitsunday community about the trip.

Joanne travelled to Uganda with 29 others with Mission Abundance to support two charities in

Uganda, Kyampisi Childcare Ministries (KCM) and Bridge Christian Ministries (BCM).

Mission Abundance is helping these charities by building a new rehabilitation centre, giving over a thousand people access to free health care, and supplying clean drinking water.

Joanne also asked the Whitsunday community if they could donate bathing suits to give to Ugandan children and was thrilled by the response enabling her to make some very special in-person deliveries.

Editor’s Note

Hi Everyone, By the time you are reading this I will be on my honeymoon in Melbourne!

As many of you will know, I got married in August, but with family visiting from all over the country and the world, we decided to spend time with them after the wedding, electing to have our honeymoon now instead.

We have two nights in the city, followed by three nights at Hepburn Springs where we will enjoy six and a half hours of spa treatments! Indulgent? Absolutely!

A big thank you to my mum for looking after my son and my dog – both of whom are young and energetic – but a lot of fun and hopefully not too much of a handful!

Here in the region the campaign race ahead of the imminent State Election is certainly heating up and we are getting calls daily to attend a range of photo opportunities with politicians racing around trying to maximise votes.

It’s certainly an exciting time and also a time of substantial election promises where all parties pledge funding for key projects in the region, each candidate illustrating what they can do if elected.

If you have a great cause or serious issue you wish to be resolved in the community, now is an excellent time to speak out – chat to a local candidate and see if they would be willing to get behind it.

One election promise this week is that the Bowen Jetty will go ahead no matter which of the two main parties are elected at the end of the month - this is a huge win for our region!

This iconic local landmark deserves to have a vibrant future, one where it can become a hub for tourism and a recreation honeypot for the community.

I am so pleased to hear that its next stage of life, following years working with the tugboats, is now going to be spent in such a joyful way.

Well done North Queensland Bulk Ports and other community groups for driving the project forward.

Enjoy your retirement Bowen Jetty, you deserve it!

DON’T BE LONELY THIS CHRISTMAS

Understanding that nobody should be alone for Christmas, Whitsunday local and retiree Michael Thomas recently posted on Whitsundays Noticeboard inviting fellow locals to an ‘orphans’ Christmas party.

He expected a group of people to be interested, but you can imagine his surprise when the post garnered 440 reactions and 151 comments.

“It blew way past my imagination!” laughed Michael.

“I don’t want to go to the pub for Christmas, I would like to at the end of the day go, yeah everybody enjoy themselves, that’s what I want to see.”

Michael is asking for a contribution of $40 a head, but said this Christmas party is not for money, he just wants to “make it happen”.

Due to the response Michael said he is going to start monthly meets.

Naturally Michael cannot host over 400 people in his back-

A Journey Of Compassion And Change

Joanne Klose, owner of Little Vintage Café in Proserpine has recently returned from her trip to Uganda, and what a journey!

Joanne is a member of Mission Abundance and they support two charities in UgandaKyampisi Childcare Ministries (KCM) and Bridge Christian Ministries (BCM).

Of the hundreds of members, 30 of them were able to visit Uganda and volunteer their time to make a difference in the remote communities of Kyampisi and Nateete.

Before her departure Joanne reached out to the local community and invited people to donate bathers so she could bring them over for Kyampisi children to wear.

Hoping for 50 sets of togs, the Whitsunday community more than delivered – the donations over double what she had anticipated – enabling her to take 108 bathers over to Uganda.

Joanne had previously visited the Ugandan children’s rehabilitation centre in 2023 and witnessed first-hand how they care for children who have had traumatic experiences.

As part of their rehabilitation the children swim and enjoy time in the on-site pool.

“The kids would go in the pool in groups,

they would get out and have to hand their bathers over to the next group and so on,” explained Joanne.

“This inspired me to want to give them some more bathing suits so they could all go in the pool together!”

Joanne and the other volunteers also worked on the rehabilitation centre while she was there, once complete it will be the largest children’s rehabilitation centre in East Africa.

On both visits to Kyampisi, Joanne has worked on the build team but this visit, constructing the rehab centre is not all she did.

While in Uganda, she was also proud to be part of the community medical camp day.

This is the third medical camp that has been set up over the years and this year, incredibly, they were able to treat 1305 people in 11 hours.

The medical camp day is kindly funded by the 30 members that are selected to go.

The new rehab centre and medical day is all a part of the same project and since the charity organisations have started supporting them, they have built a medical clinic, church, boarding rooms and schoolrooms.

Joanne has been lucky enough to go to Uganda for two years in a row and before the charity arrived the community of Nateete were drinking sewerage water. This meant there was lots of sickness and some children sadly died.

In 2023 they supplied Nateete with clean drinking water and Joanne says seeing the Nateete community welcome them back has been unbelievable.

“When we went there in 2023 we walked down Nateete and they did not want us there, you could see it,” Joanne said.

“We had armed guards with us as we walked down, and it felt really eerie. You could tell that to them, we were just the group of white people taking photos.

“This year, just from having that clean water, they were waving at us and giving us massive hugs.

“The hugs and the love they give you, it is so heartwarming. It really is, I don’t know another way to explain, it’s amazing.”

You can get involved and help children in need at missionabundance.org, sponsorship of a child is $100 a month and Joanne has plans to place a child sponsorship wall in her Proserpine Café.

LNP Reveal Bright Future for Bowen Jetty

The Bowen community’s long-await ed dream of ensuring the future of the Bowen Jetty has come true fol lowing a prolonged bout of advocacy by Member for Burdekin Dale Last MP.

Mr Last said he was proud to have worked with Bowen’s community leaders on be half of the community and condemned the Labor state government’s delays.

“For several years the Labor state govern ment has made promises about the future of the jetty but, frankly, had failed to deliver,” Mr Last said.

Mr Last said that once the project featured in the budget the community should have had certainty but that, sadly, that wasn’t the case.

“I have made it very clear that the LNP would not stand in the way of the government’s budget commitment to this project,” Mr Last said. “That commitment was made based on feedback from the community.”

“Across recent years we have welcomed the Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads to hear from community leaders about their wishes for the Bowen foreshore precinct and as the Member for Burdekin I have consistently fought to ensure this community receives the money it was promised for works to commence on the jetty.

“Now that the government has finally honoured their promise, North Queensland Bulk Ports has the certainty to move forward. The plans for the jetty will not only honour the 150-year history of the jetty but ensure it is more accessible than ever for visitors and locals in the Bowen area.

“I look forward to working with the NQBP and the Bowen community to see this project delivered for future generations of the Bowen community and visitors to the area to enjoy.”

Labor Announce Bright Future For Bowen Jetty

Plans for the new $68 million Bowen Jetty have been revealed.

The project will see a new jetty construction that will revitalise the asset and the precinct for the community.

The project will see the construction of a modern jetty that has been designed in line with extensive community consultation, and that will feature a host of public amenities while honouring the rich, 150-year-old history of the structure.

Anne Baker, Labor candidate for Burdekin expressed excitement about the announcement:

“This is a fantastic announcement for North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) and our broader community and shows Labor’s commitment in delivering on, and maintaining the rich heritage of our community.”

“This project, that will see the construction of a modern jetty, will help transform the Bowen coastline for future generations to enjoy, and attract tourists to this beautiful part of Queensland.

“By investing in local infrastructure, we are investing in our local communities and with the Bowen

Jetty project, we are protecting our local ecosystems.”

Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Bart Mellish stated:

“The Miles Labor Government under stands the importance of this historical asset for the Bowen community.”

“This investment will ensure its future for many generations to come.”

NQBP CEO Brendan Webb also added:

“This has been a collaborative effort be tween NQBP, the Queensland Govern ment, Whitsunday Regional Council and the Bowen community.”

Police Remembrance Day Service

Honours Officers

Over 30 people gathered at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Proserpine last Friday for National Police Remembrance Day.

The service paid respect and recognised Australian Police Officers nationwide and international police officers.

The Remembrance Day paid tribute to officers that died both in service and out of service.

Queensland Police Proserpine Station Sergeant Mark Flynn spoke on the matter.

“The Queensland Police Service acknowledges the years of service, commitment and integrity of retired police officers,” he said.

“Their valuable contribution over many years of dedicated service has provided safety and justice for the Queensland community. We observe a time of silence to remember and honour those who have died in this past year.”

He also addressed active serving officers that had past since the last National Police Remembrance.

“The Queensland Police Service acknowledges the contribution of

serving police officers who have passed away since National Police Remembrance Day 2023. In doing this we remember them and honour the service, courage and integrity with which they served,” he said.

“We observe a time of silence to remember and honour those who have died in the past year.”

Sergeant Mark Flynn said the day is important to all officers, past, present and international officers too.

“It’s important to remember those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice and that’s their lives, not only within Queensland, but throughout the nation and Pacific Nations countries as well,” he said.

“I have been a police officer for 26, years now, and I have been delivering police service remands so it’s definitely important. It’s important to all of us.”

On National Police Remembrance Day Queensland Police Service remember and honour Queensland police officers who were killed in the line of duty. Queensland Police Service also remember and honour those whose deaths did not occur as a consequence of their duty.

Workforce Accommodation Issues Workshopped

Ameeting at Bowen Neighbourhood Centre last week attempted to find solutions for the workforce accommodation crisis, which is claimed to be crippling the town and surrounding region.

Hosted by Greater Whitsunday Communities and Regional Development Australia, the meeting was attended by representatives of some of Bowen’s major employers and sought to find ways to kickstart more workforce accommodation at a time when the shortage of such lodgings is harming the town’s economic progress.

Among the attendees were representatives from Bowen Rail, Whitsunday Regional Council, Gilmour Space, Muroona Gardens aged care facility, Bowen Chamber of Commerce, Abbott Point coal handling facility and associated industries, homestay providers, marine services providers, police, schools and tourism operators. Other attendees who joined in via a videolink represented energy hub projects, Greater Whitsunday Communities and an accommodation provider.

Rob Cocco, CEO of Regional Development Australia (Greater Whitsundays) co-facilitated the meeting with Tonia Wilson, of Greater Whitsunday Communities, and they told the audience of about 20 that about 3000 additional workers’ quarters

were needed by 2031 in Mackay/Whitsunday regions.

While that was happening, the costs of building were increasing and development proposals were not leading to starts, and rental stocks were “falling through the floor”, Ms Wilson said. Part of the problem, she said, was that temporary accommodation was not particularly profitable for builders.

While she urged more liaison with government, she also said many developers “didn’t know” what the most pressing concerns over accommodation were.

“We need to demonstrate demand for accommodation. We need to secure commitment from employers to enter long-term agreements for their staff - preferably at a premium - for security of revenue stream to investors.”

Mark Hinman, CEO of Accommodation Services Australia, said that while time to market and trades access made prefabricated accommodations an acceptable alternative, they were best suited for workcamp style settings and, because they were often temporary, there were big costs in set-up and probably later dismantling.

“We need workers to stay for three to four years,” he said. “We can pick this up with timing,” perhaps with a developer on-sell-

ing to another.

As well, Ms Wilson said, there was a need to reach the best mix of accommodations for single, or family, requirements.

While seasonal work and temporary postings posed their own challenges for accommodation provision, those seeking employment in essential services such as police, teachers, hospital and aged care staff had declined accepting job offers because rentals in the Bowen area were virtually non-existent and more expensive than rentals in the major cities. This was a major problem that affected their ability to recruit and retain new staff.

Often, the audience heard, employers provided temporary accommodation, after which employees were stranded with nowhere to live. “We have people living in the Burdekin because they can’t find accommodation here (in Bowen), one attendee said. “Temporary visa holders are another group that find it hard.”

Access to land affected the dynamics of developer investment, but a Muroona Gardens representative said the aged care facility had plenty of spare land to build on. However, as this was in a flood area, they were required to raise the level of the land by two metres, which made such in-

vestment unfeasible.

Such investment also reached critical level when it came to provision of line infrastructure such as sewerage, water and other necessities, Mr Cocco said.

“To attract investment we need to demonstrate demand and secure commitment from employers to address accommodation for staff,” Ms Wilson said.

Bowen Chamber of Commerce chairman Bruce Hedditch said engagement with the council was essential.

“We have got to confront the issues facing housing in Bowen. We need a meeting with the Mayor at the earliest possible opportunity.”

NEWS IN BRIEF

Temporary Stinger Net Installation

Council will be installing a temporary stinger net at Dingo Beach in early October to ensure residents and visitors have a safe place to swim during stinger season.

The stinger net will be located between the existing enclosure and the boat ramp, near picnic settings and car parking.

Alternate locations on the other side of the enclosure are constrained as a sandbar has formed that reduces swimming area and depth, on average, across tides.

Stinger nets will also be installed in Cannonvale Foreshore and Boathaven Beach. Exact installation timing of the region’s stinger nets is subject to scientific advice from James Cook University.

Following consultation on repairing the Dingo Beach enclosure, Council have received State Government approval to undertake the works and are currently assessing the projects scope and materials to inform a budget for delivery.

The Proserpine Entertainment Centre came alive on 21 September, hosting the elegant and vibrant 2024 Mayor’s Charity Ball.

The night was filled with laughter of over 200 guests enjoying delicious food and generous fundraising efforts, creating a truly memorable occasion.

Mayor Ry Collins chose two essential local charities as beneficiaries this year: BMA CQ Rescue and the Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network (WSPN). Thanks to the community’s generosity, over $60,000 was raised through ticket sales, raffles, and a lively auction.

“This event is more than just a great evening,” Mayor Collins said. “It’s an opportunity for our community to come together and support the incredible work these charities do in saving lives across our region.”

The evening began with the traditional Gala Experience, featuring a gourmet three-

course meal and an exciting charity auction.

This was followed by the new After Dark Experience, which invited guests to join the festivities from 8 p.m. and dance to the lively sounds of the 1RAR band and DJ Cue.

“We are grateful for the support of our platinum sponsors and event partners: Hillery Group, Abbot Point Operations, and Airlie Beach Hotel,” Mayor Collins noted.

“Their contributions, along with those of our many gold, silver, and in-kind sponsors, made this event possible.”

“It was a night to remember,” he added. “Seeing so many people come out in support of these charities truly showcases the heart of our community.”

The 2024 Mayor’s Charity Ball was a remarkable success, bringing glamour, entertainment, and crucial funds to organisations that serve the Whitsunday region in vital ways.

North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) has unveiled a community-led concept design for a new jetty that will help transform the Bowen coastline.

The release of the final Bowen Jetty concept design comes as the Queensland Government has provided funding approval for the $68 million project.

The project is made possible thanks to a $50 million commitment from the Queensland Government and a $18 million contribution from the government owned port authority North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP).

NQBP CEO Brendan Webb acknowledged reaching the milestone, which was possi-

ble thanks to a collaborative effort between NQBP, the Queensland Government, and the Bowen community.

“Community input has been integral to the Jetty concept, which reflects a vibrant and valued public asset for generations to come,” Mr Webb said.

“The design highlights the existing wharf’s history while incorporating cultural themes that emerged from project consultation with the Traditional Owners, the Juru people.

“The project will see the construction of a modern jetty that will feature a host of public amenities while honouring the rich, 150-year-old history of the structure.”

The final concept design has prioritised enhanced accessibility and recreational opportunities, reflecting community feedback.

“More than 770 people gave feedback through a consultation process that commenced in March 2024,” Mr Webb said.

“They want seating, shade and the ability to fish. They value the past and want to share stories of the history of the jetty. We have incorporated all these themes in the design response.”

Key features of the final concept include:

• Ample shade and seating for relaxing and socialising

• Toilets and drinking fountains

• Dedicated fishing areas equipped with modern amenities

• Accessibility provisions to ensure inclusivity for all members of the community

• Environmental consideration to preserve local ecosystems

• Integration of Juru people artwork and cultural elements to celebrate the region’s rich heritage.

Details about the final concept and renders are available on the project website at nqbp.com.au.

The next stage of the project will be the detailed design phase through 2025.

Bright future for Bowen Jetty

The $68 million Bowen Jetty project is made possible thanks to a $50 million commitment from the Queensland Government and a $18 million contribution from North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP).

We’ve heard from the community during the June engagement on two draft jetty options and now have a final concept design for the jetty.

The project will see the construction of a modern jetty designed after extensive community consultation. It will feature a host of public amenities while honouring the structure’s rich, 150-year-old history.

It reflects the things the community told us are important like better accessibility, ample shade and seating, toilets, historical and cultural education, fishing facilities and integration of Juru people artwork.

The next stage of the project will be the detailed design phase and gaining the necessary approvals throughout 2025. We’ll keep you updated as the project progresses.

QUESTIONS POSED FOR EACH CANDIDATE TO ANSWER:

1: Who are you and what do you think qualifies you for the role?

2: If you could initiate a project or address one issue in the region – what would it be and how you would go about it?

AMANDA CAMM WHITSUNDAY CANDIDATE FOR LNP

1: The last four years has been a privilege to serve as the Member for Whitsunday; I’m asking for the community to give me the opportunity to continue to serve them. I have worked hard and believe I have stood up on the issues that matter to our community.

2: Our road projects – we need Hamilton Plains to commence – its ready to go, and congestion on Mackay Bucasia Road - we just need a government who is committed to regional Queensland to ensure our region gets its fair share

instead of stalling or reprioritising projects in South East Queensland.

3:I have tried to be visible and connect with community groups and individuals and schools across the electorate. It doesn’t matter where you live – your concerns and issues have equal priority. I haven’t been able to solve every issue; I’ve tried to be accessible; been available to constituents and prioritised local matters.

4:Our fair share particularly in road

and health funding and policy to address the cost of living and youth crime crisis. We have a plan and, as a senior member of the LNP, I believe we can deliver if we are elected to Government.

5. Very busy… I will hit the ground running to deliver for our region with energy and a smile. As the local member and a Shadow Minister in the Opposition I have demonstrated I have the capacity and commitment to work hard. I will continue to do this.

BAUKE HOVINGA WHITSUNDAY CANDIDATE FOR LABOR

1: As a health professional, now working as an Emergency Physician, I have seen firsthand how the community’s health and wellbeing thrives when Governments invest in healthcare and health infrastructure. As a local dad of five kids aged between 10-21, cost of living relief is vital to our family. I want to continue on Labor’s commitment to doing what matters to Whitsunday families by providing free Kindy, free TAFE as well as $1000 energy rebate, and 20% off car rego.

2: My health background allows me to know how important the satellite hospital in Mackay’s Northern

Beaches will be to the region. And I know this is all at risk under the LNP. I am committed to new Premier Steven Miles’ plan to train more doctors, nurses and health professionals and to attract and retain them in our beautiful region.

3: It is so important to listen to the community and meet them where they are. Our local Whitsunday community is diverse and filled with so many wonderful people, the only way I could ensure their needs were met by their local representative is to do what Labor MPs do best – listen and act.

4: Cost of living relief is what local families want now. We have seen the pressure interstate migration has put on our community, so the new Premier Steven Miles’ cost of living measures have really had a positive impact on our community.

5: My focus right now is to talk to as many people in my community as possible from now and until election night. I want to talk to the people of Whitsunday about Labor’s plan in doing what matters for Whitsunday. And talk about the risks the LNP pose to our community. This election is a choice between a Miles Labor Government taking Queensland

forwards or the Crisafulli LNP who will cut what matters and take us backwards.

JULIE HALL WHITSUNDAY CANDIDATE FOR ONE NATION

become a career politician, I did it to give my community a real voice. I have the guts to say what most people are thinking, and I can have a much stronger voice in State Government.

1: Previously the people’s Mayor of the Whitsunday Regional Council, I am a mother and a grandmother with a passion for representing my community to ensure the world we are creating for our children is one worth living in. I didn’t go into politics to

2: I can’t pick one issue, there are so many that are affecting the lives of our community, the cost of living, the Bruce highway, youth crime and no one is listening. There is too much talk and no action and I intend to bring action. I will do what it takes until something is done, even if it takes blocking the roads to parliament to give the politicians a taste of what it’s like when the Bruce Highway is closed.

3: By listening to them. I am sick to

death of the bureaucracy and topdown leadership that continually tell our communities what’s good for them and how we should run our businesses and lives. Community consultation is mainly undertaken by stakeholder groups chosen by the government to give the government the answers they want to hear. It’s an honour and a privilege to represent your community and the role of your local Member is to represent you first.

4: They want a politician that actually stands up for them, who has the guts to say what they are thinking. They want government accountability and for more debate and community say in legislation that is being pushed through with little opposition. LNP

and Labor will tell you a minor party vote is a wasted vote, it’s not it is actually a vote for the people and from the cross bench we can start holding whoever is in government to account.

5: My 100-day plan is to go into every community large and small and hold a town meeting to listen and workshop the needs of that community. I want to ensure we are setting our priorities together. This will also include touching base with all the major stakeholder groups like schools, police, community groups, emergency services and Councils. I want to start with a fresh slate and at the end of 100 days know my electorate and its real needs personally.

INTRODUCING THE WHITSUNDAY & BURDEKIN CANDIDATES FOR STATE ELECTION

3: There are many diverse communities within your electorate, how would you ensure each was served fairly?

4: What do you think the people most want now and how would you give it to them?

5: Tell us what your first 100 days would look like if you were successful in your election bid?

DALE LAST BURDEKIN CANDIDATE FOR LNP

1: Prior to becoming the Member for Burdekin, I spent more than 25 years as a Police Officer in regional Queensland as well as serving as a Local Government Councillor and

running my own business. That means I bring wide ranging experience and knowledge to this role. My track record in advocating on behalf of rural and regional Queensland and the Burdekin Electorate speaks for itself and my ability to deliver results is evidence of my passion for representing our community.

2: The Burdekin Electorate is a powerhouse of the state’s economy thanks to our agriculture, mining and tourism industries as well as the local small businesses. Despite this, across the electorate, we are not seeing a return for our hard work. Ensuring that we see our fair share of the funding pie would mean that our roads were safe, our services re-

ceived the resources they need and the critical infrastructure that we rely on would be funded accordingly.

3: To properly engage with people across such a large electorate means a lot of time behind the wheel and very little time at home but I am fortunate to have my family’s full support.

As the Member for Burdekin I have been, and continue to be, committed to visiting and meeting the needs of all residents and communities in my electorate, especially schools, hospitals, police stations and community organisations.

4: No matter where you live in Queensland, everyone is feel-

ANNE BAKER BURDEKIN CANDIDATE FOR LABOR

1: I am an authentic person who has a demonstrated platform of putting people over politics, I come with 17 years’ experience in local government - the last 12 as Mayor of the Isaac Regional Council. I am capable, confident, and committed to the electorate of Burdekin.

2: Equitable Government funding to the regions/electorates is a major concern for me, it was when I was the Mayor of Isaac, which I made progress on however there is more to do, and it

remains a priority of mine. The model of distribution currently is not fit for purpose. I can and will do better.

3: Based on my local government experience of over 17 years, I have found that good planning and prioritising of time is what will ensure delivery of effective representation of the whole electorate.

4: I believe people are yearning for genuine representation in their elected MP. They are telling me they are looking for an authentic personality with

ANDREW

people skills that represent in a genuine sense and can communicate to get the regional issues on the table with the intent of getting outcomes.

5: Getting Busy straight up. Closely assessing what policies, projects, and priories are already in progress. Assessing and ensuring all are a good fit for the electorate generally are things fit for purpose. Ensuring we are seeing consistency and commitment to our electorate and all the communities in it.

ing the effects of the cost of living crisis as well as issues like youth crime and an overloaded health system. Along with my LNP colleagues I have pledged real action on those issues from day one because Queenslanders, and the people of the Burdekin electorate in particular, deserve to have their concerns heard and addressed as a priority.

5: As I always have in my first 100 days, I plan to hit the ground running. If the LNP secures government, that means rolling the sleeves up and delivering on our commitments to address the issues Queenslanders face. My top priority is, and always has been, delivering for the people of the Burdekin electorate.

ELBORNE BURDEKIN CANDIDATE FOR ONE NATION

there is major room for improvement in the power generation base load field area. I have been a proud foster parents to 63 children over the years, I have also been part of peer support programs and men’s mental health groups.

2: Today’s education system does not cater to youth wanting to do trades and not university. Also, putting into law adult time for youth is not fixing the problem it makes them harder criminals. I consider it a privilege to serve in the community and no issue will be too big or small to address. The issues the Burdekin faces are big indeed but to address them I would set up a community forum to discuss the issues.

3: Diversity in our community is generally viewed as a good outcome, but in terms of fair access to government services it’s important we treat all Queenslanders the same. Government assistance and services must be based on what is needed by the individual. An example of diversity in our community is the growth of elderly Australians as a proportion of the population. One Nation will be prioritising health care for senior Australians with the establishment of dedicated hospitals catering to older people’s needs.

4: What many people are telling me they want is relief from the rising cost of living. I think it’s important to tackle the causes rather than spend

taxpayers’ money funding handouts. One Nation will move immediately to eliminate stamp duty from rising insurance premiums. We’ll implement an independent energy policy that prioritises affordability over climate change and reduce energy costs for Queensland households.

5: If I did have the support of Burdekin voters to be their MP, I’d first establish an electorate office with good staff who understand that we will put our community first. I will aim to be an accessible MP who is accountable and listens to his community. And also take in what legislation no longer serves the community and remove it - the one thing no other party has done.

1: My name is Andrew Elborne, age 59, born in Brisbane. I attended a catholic school until grade 10 left to pursue a trade as an electrician. I have worked in construction and believe

Bowen Rocket Launch

One Step Closer To First Flight

Gilmour Space has successfully completed a major wet dress rehearsal at the Bowen Orbital Spaceport in North Queensland, marking a key milestone towards the launch of the country’s first Australian-made orbital rocket later this year.

During the test, the Eris rocket was safely loaded with propellant and all launch procedures were executed up to T-10 seconds before lift-off.

The full rehearsal confirmed the performance of critical systems and only minor issues were identified.

These issues included two faulty valves and some minor software reconfigurations.

They are expected to be resolved before the first flight.

Director of Launch Vehicles and Satellites at Gilmour Space David Doyle said this rehearsal was a success.

“I cannot overstate the significance of what we’ve accomplished, with only minimal issues detected,” he said.

“This was the final major test to validate the readiness of our rocket, ground systems and crew, while allowing us to address any concerns ahead of launch day.

“At this stage, we expect to resolve all identified issues in the coming weeks. Pending approvals and other unforeseen events, Eris should be ready for launch as soon as we get the green light.”

Gilmour Space are currently pending launch permit approval and airspace management clearances from the relevant agencies.

A Minute With The Mayor Ry Collins

It was a positive step forward for our region when Councillors unanimously voted to establish an Economic Development Advisory Group (EDAG) at last week’s monthly Council meeting in Bowen.

As a first term Mayor I am committed to building a prosperous future for our region and the new Advisory Group will bring together Council, community leaders, and business representatives to ensure our economic plans are aligned with the needs and opportunities of the Whitsundays.

help navigate the region through current economic challenges and set a strong foundation for the future.

The EDAG will act as a forum for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and the development of innovative strategies to enhance economic development in the region.

As Mayor I will chair the group, and we have elected Cr John Finlay as a Councillor representative on the group.

To ensure representation from diverse industries and stakeholders within the Whitsunday region industry members will be selected through nomination by our Economic Development Team in consultation with the myself and CEO Warren Bunker.

Having key stakeholders on board ensures their voices are heard to ensure it is a collaborative approach that will deliver the best outcomes.

EDAG will focus on key areas such as tourism, infrastructure, job creation, and innovation, ensuring the region’s economic growth aligns with community values and environmental sustainability.

This renewed focus on economic development is part of my broader strategy to bolster the local economy, create employment opportunities, and further establish the Whitsundays as a premier destination for both businesses and tourists.

We are one of the fastest growing regions in Queensland and this new initiative will

Given the Whitsundays’ strong reliance on tourism, proactive economic strategies ensure the region remains competitive. By attracting investment in tourism-related infrastructure and facilities, the Whitsundays can increase visitor numbers and enhance the overall visitor experience.

It is also vital that we diversify the economy beyond tourism to ensure the region withstands economic shocks (like natural disasters or pandemics) by creating a more resilient local economy.

Sustainability is also key so it is important that our region’s rapid economic growth can be guided to balance progress with environmental stewardship to encourage sustainable tourism and development practices, protecting the natural beauty and ecosystems that are central to the region’s identity.

Proactive development fosters a business-friendly environment, attracting domestic and international investors. It also encourages local innovation, supporting start-ups and creative ventures that can adapt to changing economic conditions.

By focusing on proactive economic development, the Whitsunday region can secure a prosperous future, providing economic stability, environmental sustainability, and improved social cohesion for generations to come.

Mayor Ry Collins’ first Charity Ball raised over $60,000 for BMA CQ Rescue and the Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network, making it a great success! The event, held at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre, combined glamour and entertainment with a strong sense of

community support. A big thank you to our Event Partners and Platinum Sponsors, Hillery Group, Abbot Point Operations, and Airlie Beach Hotel, for helping to make the night possible. To see the full list of sponsors, visit https:// bit.ly/41NilmN.

Smooth Sailing For finance And Mortgage Broking

This month’s Member Spotlight from Whitsunday Chamber of Commerce and Industry showcases our diverse businesses community.

After 22 years in the finance industry, Fiona Erquiaga established Smooth Sailing Finance Consulting in 2020.

As a finance and mortgage broker, she assists clients to achieve their goals by offering strategic, tailored and competitive options for first and new homes, investments, business and equipment purchases, and self-managed super funds.

Having worked with the big banks for many years, Fiona wanted to do something more rewarding, something that allowed her to prioritise and spend time with clients.

With 70% of all home loans in Australia now written through brokers, more and more consumers are taking advantage of better service and the introduction of Best Interests Duty requiring brokers to act in the best interests of their clients.

Like many industries, new technologies and AI is changing finance, giving even more lending options and making it easier to do business.

Fiona also established Smooth Sailing to work for herself. Like most small businesses, she is enjoying the benefits of self-employed flexibility and faced the usual

challenge of keeping up with demand while trying to find reliable and efficient support staff.

As an active Chamber member, Fiona enjoys the range of opportunities to network with other like-minded business owners which has been invaluable in expanding her business; as well as receiving resources and information on local and state developments, changing regulations, grants and opportunities that may otherwise be overlooked.

Her top tips for other business owners are:

• Outsource the tasks that you can. Stick to the tasks you are good at that generate your income. Focus your time on those things and let others do the rest.

• Keep a close eye on your cashflows and ensure you always have a buffer for large and/or unexpected costs, particularly ATO liabilities.

Final Addition Announced For Whitsundays Songwriter Festival

The Whitsundays Arts Festival is thrilled to reveal the final addition to this year’s Whitsundays Songwriter Festival.

Airlie Beach will be graced with the presence of Mark Sholtez, the first Australian artist to be signed to Verve Records in New York.

Joining him is 7 time ARIA award winner Wendy Matthews, Queensland Music Award winner Jude York and America’s Got Talent and The Voice Australia’s sensation Johnny Manuel who were announced last month.

Mark will take part in the Whitsundays Songwriter Festival as part of the Songwriter Retreat (October 10 - 15) at Elementa Whitsundays completing the line up alongside Wendy Matthews, Jude York, Johnny Manuel, Francesca de Valence and Karen Jacobsen.

The professional residency offers the opportunity for collaboration across genres, co-writing, and the creation of new works. These new compositions will then be performed in an intimate performance on the Airlie Beach foreshore on Saturday 12 October.

Set in a private event space at the Whitsunday Sailing Club, this evening event, ‘Concert & Conversation,’ promises a rare occasion to listen to the stories of these songwriters.

Music lovers and fans of these accomplished artists will have the unique chance to get up close and personal.

For Mark Sholtez, this is the story of a regional Queensland singer and songwriter who has worked with some of the most successful producers, musicians and artists in the industry in both Australia and the United States.

An ARIA nominated and APRA award winning songwriter, Mark has written, recorded and produced music for Universal Music, Sony Music, EMI Music and Warner Music and collaborated with music industry icon Tommy LiPuma (Barbra Streisand, George Benson, Miles Davis) and multiple Grammy award winning Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Tracy Chapman).

Mark’s music has been in numerous international film and television productions including Private Practice, Packed to the Rafters, Grim Pretty Little Liars and Teen

Mark also joins the professional faculty as mentor for the Emerging Songwriter Workshop on Saturday 12 October at Whitsunday Sailing Club, and as an educator for the prestigious Berklee College of Music it is very exciting he will be working with local songwriters.

Returning for the fourth time to Airlie Beach is Louie Lee Feltrin, a legendary performer who is bringing us the high energy Robbie Williams Experience.

Louie has been performing as Robbie Williams for almost 20 years and still loves it. He loves getting up on stage and giving people what they want from an authentic Robbie Williams tribute show.

“We don’t take it too seriously; we tend to make it a lot of fun,” said Louie.

“We know it’s all pretend, so we enjoy that aspect of it, and we give everyone what they want to see, which is Robbie when he’s at his best.

“It is really engaging for the audience, we try to make sure that it’s an interactive, high-energy show, that is lots of fun, and includes all of Robbie’s hits.”

Louie said they will play all of the wellknown Robbie Williams hits like, ‘Let Me Entertain You’, ‘Rock DJ’, and of course

‘Angels’ but the Robbie Williams Experience will be an authentic show, mirroring the covers that Robbie performs in Australia.

“He plays covers when he comes to Australia to make the sets more of a show, a bit more personal and interactive, so we will be doing a lot of that stuff this time in Airlie Beach,” said Louie.

“I will also play the stuff he performed at the Grand Final a couple of years ago in Melbourne.”

Robbie is a big John Farnham fan, so Louie and the band will be performing ‘You’re the Voice’, and they may also throw in some other Australian classics like ‘Down Under’.

Louie is returning to Airlie Beach shortly and he is already excited.

“I can’t wait to get back to Airlie Beach it’s one of my favourite places to play,” expressed Louie.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everybody

enjoying themselves, it’s going to be a ripper show.

“We are doing a couple of new and different Robbie songs this time, to make everyone a bit more engaged, I can’t wait for it!”

Louie has performed in front of thousands of people before, the most being 20,000 people at a festival but he actually prefers the smaller performances, in particular Airlie Beach.

“I prefer doing the smaller shows they are always a lot more into it, and at Airlie Beach Hotel you’re right in there with the crowd because they are sitting right in front of you so I can have a lot of fun with everyone and you get that reaction right away.

Get ready to cast your line and reel in the prize of a lifetime with the Barra Cash Dash! The all-new community event is set to be fin-tastic.

The initiative is to help drive more tourism to the region, as well as get budding anglers off the couch and onto the lure.

Craig Turner, Director of Commercial Business at the Whitsunday Regional Council, shared exciting news about the fishing competition.

Participants have the chance to win incredible cash prizes, including a staggering $20,000 for catching a released Golden Barra. Additionally, there’s a chance to snag one of the two elusive Platinum Barras, each worth a remarkable $7,500.

“The Golden Barramundi is 1% of all Barramundi’s, it’s orange, yellow and all these amazing colours.” Craig enthused.

The fish, which will be released by the Mayor of the Whitsundays Ry Collins, will all be tagged, and the competition runs until someone catches the prized fish.

“What we want is for people to have access to fishing in Lake Proserpine, so you could go down there, camp with a $10 tent and with a cheap fishing rod and lure you

could potentially catch a $20,000 Golden Barra,” Craig explained.

Launching on 5th October, this competition is open to all anglers, get your rods at the ready and reel in $20,000.

Top Tip for catching Barramundis: They get hungry in the warmer water, so the hotter months from October to February are your best chance to catch the hungry Barras!

The organisation currently has 18 active volunteers.

The current chair of BTB is Jenn Honnery, who is encouraging members to join the committee to help set the future strategic direction of the organisation.

“We have more than 200 members and many of those have past experience in a good cross-section of industries,” she said.

The not-for-profit organisation operates the Bowen Visitor Information Centre next to the Big Mango and the information booth at Bowen’s Front Beach.

The Local Tourism Organisation has a mission to drive tourism, promote destination awareness, provide excellence in visitor experience and membership support through effective marketing and exceptional customer service.

Busy day ahead?

Feeling hungry at lunch and looking for a healthy and locally sourced poke bowl? Lokahi at the Whitsunday Shopping Centre has you covered!

Inspired to explore healthy alternatives beyond traditional salads and vegetables, owner Erina Miyake discovered the vibrant world of poke bowls.

Originally from Hawaii, poke bowls blend Asian and Western flavours, offering a delicious and nutritious alternative. Erina is excited to share this culinary gem with the Whitsunday community, hoping locals will embrace the unique flavours and healthy benefits just as she has.

Erina’s ingredients are all from local suppliers where possible, but if not available locally she sources them from larger cities such as Brisbane.

“Our poke bowls are not pre-made.”

“Customers can customise them according to their preferences and dietary needs, from the base to mix-ins and protein, people can create their own DIY poke bowls,” Erina explained.

Erina highlights that every signature bowl is a “must-try,” crafted with the perfect blend of base, mix-ins, protein, and dressings. She particularly emphasises that the combination of rice, mix-ins, sashimi, and

homemade sauce called “classic sauce” is “particularly exceptional.”

To address the issues of vegetable deficiency and lack of nutritional balance within the region, Lokahi focuses on using a variety of vegetables while carefully seasoning them with proteins such as tofu, fish, and meat to ensure they are delicious.

Lokahi has also introduced online ordering to help busy office workers, tradies, and others with limited time access healthy meals, making every effort to provide them as quickly as possible.

Erina claims their best seller is the “Build Your Own Poke Bowl.” This is a DIY poke bowl that allows customers to create their own unique combinations, with their top three sellers being Grilled Teriyaki Salmon, Karaage Chicken, and Teriyaki Chicken.

Additionally, an exciting new addition has made its way on to the Lokahi menu. “CUP-BAP” (Cup-Rice), starting at just $9.90 is the perfect option for those looking for a smaller portion or fewer vegetables while still enjoying the same tasty meat at a lower price.

Lokahi is open for brunch, lunch, and dinner from 10am to 3pm and 5pm to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, head on down and poke your head in!

Eco Barge Set To Transform Marine Debris Into Valuable Resources

Eco Barge has excitedly announced their selection as one of six successful applicants for a grant under the Queensland Circular Economy (Industry-Research) program.

This initiative is supported by the Resources Centre of Excellence and the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation.

The Circular Economy program aims to drive industry-led research and innovation to transition from the traditional take-make-waste model to a sustainable circular economy.

This approach focuses on designing out waste and pollution, circulating products and materials at their highest value, and regenerating natural systems.

Eco Barge is dedicated to transforming marine debris collected by their passionate volunteers into valuable and saleable products.

Whitsunday Automotive And Restoration Club Anniversary

The Whitsunday Automotive and Restoration Club celebrated its 40th Anniversary in September.

50 members of the club plus guests attended and reminisced about the early years of the club.

There was also a display of memorabilia, old photos and newsletters for everyone to enjoy.

The highlight of the anniversary cele-

bration was that members of the club showcased their cars and were eager to chat about the history of them, they also marked the occasion with each member of the club receiving a commemorative mug.

There were 42 cars at the anniversary, including a 1924 Model T Ford, 1934 Wolseley, 1928 Dodge Standard 6, 1953 Morris Minor 1000, 1933 Diamond T,

1964 Austin Healey Sprite, 1978 Falcon Fairmont Wagon XC, and some of these iconic cars even featured in the 2008 movie ‘Australia’.

The club started back in July 1984, known then as the Proserpine Restorers Club, by Phillip Taylor and Alan Horsford and they are still active club members today.

The Club is not just about restoring cars, but revitalising anything old, from sew-

ing machines to sulkys and stationary engines and everything in between.

One member has a collection of old tractors which he happily fires up when the club has visitors and several members have old stationary engines which get started up on display day.

Anyone interested in joining the club can contact President Jim Rossetti on 0481 152 716.

Whitsunday Game Fish Club Junior Anglers Steal the Show

FISHING

The Whitsunday Game Fish Club’s Billfish and Tuna Rally, held last Sunday, saw junior anglers taking centre stage and proving their prowess on the water, much to the surprise of their seasoned competitors. In perfect conditions, ten teams took to the seas, but it was the young guns who outshined the veterans.

Junior angler Jasmin Smith, fishing aboard her dad’s boat Lay Low, made headlines by tagging and releasing a Sailfish on an 8kg line, earning her the top-scoring Billfish

of the day. Not to be outdone, her younger brother Benson also had an impressive showing, tagging and releasing a Long Tail Tuna on a 10kg line to win the Tuna section. Benson capped off the day by landing a stunning Mahi Mahi, solidifying the siblings’ dominance in the competition.

Despite the challenging Sailfish conditions, all teams enjoyed a day of fishing and camaraderie. With the rally wrapped up, the club is now turning its attention to the highly anticipated Ben Doolan Light Tackle Tournament, set for October 10-

13. This year’s tournament is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever, thanks to a dedicated committee and the support of both long-standing and new sponsors. The event kicks off with a compulsory briefing on Thursday, October 10 at 6 p.m followed by a fun Calcutta auction of teams at 8 p.m. All tournament nominations must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Monday, October 7. The action begins on Friday, October 11 with a sailpast of all competing boats at 7 a.m., and fishing will commence at 8 a.m. The tournament runs

through the weekend, with the presentation dinner scheduled for Sunday evening at 6 p.m. at the Clubhouse in Altmann Avenue, Cannonvale.

One team to keep an eye on will be the group of junior anglers, with their dads stepping in as crew. These young competitors have already vowed to give the veterans a run for their money, making the Ben Doolan Light Tackle Tournament an event not to be missed!

The club prides itself on being family-friendly, fostering fun, fitness, and friendship.

Club Coaches Mark Erickson and Ken Crittenden extend their congratulations to all swimmers who maintained their fitness over the school holidays. It was also great to see such strong attendance at Club Nights during the break.

Exciting Week of Bowls Ahead For Airlie Beach Bowls

With just one week left of competitive bowls, the club is gearing up for the final event—the Men’s Fours Competition—next weekend before closing for roof installation. The recent games have been as heated as the weather, with thrilling action across all competitions.

The week kicked off on Tuesday, 24th September, with 18 players competing in afternoon bowls. The standout team, led by the talented skipper Joan McGrath, claimed victory with the highest margin. Joan’s team, including the relentless Betty “Never Give Up” Whitehorn and newcomer Gail Simms, outplayed their opponents to emerge as the sole winners of the day.

On Wednesday, 25th September, Jackpot Bowls was masterfully organized by Rick Galea. The club welcomed special guests Ray “Red” Edwards and Garth Lees from Broadbeach, Queensland, as well as Mike Harrison from Proserpine. While the Jackpot wasn’t claimed, the day’s winners—led by Lu Rogan, with second Michael Jacometti, and skipper Rick Galea—delivered an outstanding performance, securing the prize money with precision and skill.

That same evening, the ever-popular Business House Bowls drew a large crowd, expertly managed by Bobby and Irene Spees, ensuring another successful night of fun and competition.

The weekend saw intense competition during the Senior Singles Championship Finals.

On Saturday and Sunday, the finals took place, culminating in a thrilling match on Sunday afternoon. Paul Muscat from Mackay City had earlier defeated Vince McSherry, while Alfie Lewis of South Suburban made a dramatic comeback, edging

BOWLS

out John Fielding from ABBC. Alfie then went on to dominate Paul with an impeccable display of precision, claiming the 2024 Champion of Champions Senior Singles title.

In Sunday afternoon Social Bowls, the club welcomed guests Bruce Kingham from Millthorpe Bowls Club, along with Ali and Steve Clare from Hervey Bay, Queensland. The team led by Robin Brown, with Mark Mawson and skipper Rick Galea, played brilliantly, taking home the week’s social bowls prize. Congratulations to all participants for an exciting week of bowls!

As we look forward to the Men’s Fours Competition next weekend, we thank everyone for their involvement and support throughout the season. Stay tuned for updates on the roof installation and the club’s reopening!

Kids Sailing Club Supported By Whitsunday Lions Club SAILING

The Whitsunday Lions Club has generously donated $2,500 to support a junior sailing camp hosted at the Whitsunday Sailing Club in Airlie Beach. This contribution will help purchase essential items such as rudders, centreboards, sails, and flags.

As a non-political service organisation, the Whitsunday Lions Club fosters leadership and networking among its members. The club actively supports local

fundraising initiatives for community projects, builds parks and venues, and provides disaster relief. Additionally, Lions Australia contributes to medical research, making a meaningful impact both locally and globally through dedicated service and compassion.

The Lions Club also run the markets down in Airlie Beach and the majority of the money from the markets is donated back into the community.

Last year the Lions Club donated

around $90,000 to the community. Alongside the markets, the Lions Club also hosted a charity golf day to which they raised $12,000 that went to the hospital.

Sue Gravelle from the Whitsunday Lions Club said:

“We like to support kids and the community, we do a lot of work with all the schools in the area, we do school bursaries and we support them with Opti-Minds, anything that involves kids getting to places or needing assistance.”
