Merry Christmas Everyone, from all of us to all of you!
We really appreciate you picking up the paper every week and we hope we delivered another year of exciting local news stories – we aim to support as many events and cover as many community issues as possible so please reach out to us if there is anything you would like us to cover for you.
I received a call last week saying that since the Bowen Independent stopped running, many of you in the north of the Whitsundays had been feeling abandoned and like you’d lost your local paper.
That was until we showed up!
We’ve received so many calls lately from Bowen and Collinsville – residents looking to us to relay their concerns to the broader community –whether that be a vandalised sign or the flying fox problem or a proud mother wanting us to cover her son’s sporting success.
Every time I receive one of these calls, I am thrilled to hear how our newspaper reaches every corner of the region and that many people consider us their local newspaper now.
While our office is based in Cannonvale, our team are all around the region and if not in person, we are always at the end of the phone so please call us anytime.
Once again, thank you for a fabulous year delivering your local newspaper and I would also like to say a huge thanks to our amazing team – everyone always gives 100 per cent and cares deeply about what they do.
See you in the new year!

COOKIES MEAN THANK YOU
Anational outpouring of grief followed the mid-December murders of two young Queensland Police officers in Wieambilla, including in the Whitsundays where a group of Bowen kids took the opportunity to thank their local officers.
Children from ‘Kidz at the Beach’ day care centre visited their local officers at the Bowen Police Station last Friday, offering them their gratitude as well as some delicious home baked cookies.
Chaperoned by Owner and Director of Kidz at the Beach, Anna Woodhouse, and Police Sergeant Michelle O’Regan, the kids were treated to a tour of the station as thanks for their gifts.
Those gifts included the aforementioned cookies – baked at Kidz at the Beach’s premises
by the children themselves –as well as the children’s own drawings of police officers with ‘Thank You’ written on each.
Police Sergeant O’Regan said Kidz at the Beach had contacted her sending their well wishes to all Bowen officers which soon expanded to the pictures.
“They hopped on the bus, we took them to the police station, and they delivered their drawings which are just fantastic,” Sergeant O’Regan said.
“The guys were busy at the station, but they took the time out of their day to show the kids around because it really filled our buckets. It’s wonderful to see the genuine appreciation from the little people – it enlightens your soul in relation to what we do in community.
“Community is right behind police at the minute, and it’s just wonderful to have that.”

A Long Wait For Bowen Roads
The long-awaited projects for road safety improvements in the Bowen area will forge ahead in early 2023, but it is looking likely they will take over a year to complete – a timeline the Federal Member for Dawson said is “not good enough”.
The state government awarded contracts to two projects last week, announcing works between Bowen Connection Road and Champion Street intersections.
Construction ceased in February 2022 after principal contractor WBHO Infrastructure Pty Ltd went into voluntary administration.
New contractor FKG Civil will now deliver six kilometres of safety improvements in the area which include road widening, wide centre line treatments, guard rails, protected turn lanes, removal of roadside hazards and an upgrade to the Bowen Connection Road and Don Street intersection.
They are expected to be complete in early 2024 but Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Wilcox, said this is too long for residents to endure.
“While I am relieved that new contractors have been appointed and works will recommence it is just not good enough to expect locals to put up with this,” he said.
“If this road was in the southeast corner, they would not be waiting years for six
kilometres of safety improvements to be completed.
“The hard reality is locals are over it. We have been dealing with dangerous road conditions and lowered speed limits with no action for almost 12 months and to hear the completion date keeps getting dragged out is very frustrating.”
Willcox took his frustrations to social media where the community responded with their comments, many stating that the current situation is dangerous and the speed restriction pointless in some areas.
“I find the tall red bollards very difficult to see through at the intersection of Bowen. They have been there for so long it’s unbelievable. I breathe a sigh of relief every time I successfully make the right turn to continue the Bruce Highway south,” said one disappointed road user.
“If the roads can’t be fixed, can someone

Collinsville Lolly Drop Returns After A Decade
Sirens blaring, lights blazing and fire fighters with lollies in bared hands – the annual ‘lolly drop’ returned to Collinsville and Scottville last week after an 11-year hiatus and everyone in the community was thrilled to see it back.
Organised and funded by the Fire Station Social Club and with kind donations from Mamma Varity sweet shop, the annual event received the support it needed to reinstate this much-loved Christmas tradition.
Lieutenant Ashley Murphy and two other Auxiliary fire fighters were joined by members of the local ambulance and police services, all volunteering their time last Saturday to throw handfuls of lollies out to excited children who lined the street.
Lieutenant Murphy said the idea began when the fire station posted a picture of their fire truck dressed in tinsel on social media and they were overwhelmed with the response.
“So many people reminisced about the old days,” he explained.
“The lolly drop used to mean a lot to the local community, so we were
pleased to bring it back.”
Watching the children’s faces as they drove down the street was a highlight for all the volunteer emergency service workers.
“The kids were so excited because they could hear the lights and the sirens coming their way,” said Lieutenant Murphy.
“Throwing the lollies on the footpaths and seeing the smiles on all the faces was a definite highlight for us all.”
Lucky To Be Alive Car Spins Out Of Control On Wet Road
Alocal family are thankful this week having escaped without harm following an incident where the vehicle they were travelling in suddenly span out of control when they tried to navigate a roundabout shortly after a downpour of rain.
Driving at less than 40 kilometres an hour, the accident occurred when Ruth Russell, her husband, their daughter and two young granddaughters were heading towards Airlie Beach and attempted to traverse the roundabout near Bunnings in Cannonvale.
“The police later said that a touch of rain makes the road very slippery after a long dry spell due to the accumulation of oil that builds up, so extra caution is needed especially on a roundabout or corner,” said Ruth.
In this case, when the vehicle suddenly started skidding, it began heading towards the central reservation and oncoming traffic.
Ruth’s daughter, who was driving at the time, overcorrected but the steering wheel locked, leaving them helpless and spinning out of control.
“It all felt like it was going in slow motion,” said Ruth.
“There was no gripping, just skidding and we careened straight off the road.”
The vehicle passed through the crash barrier and plummeted two metres into the grassland below.
“I’m very grateful that the railing gave way,” said Ruth.
“It slowed us down but didn’t stop us, otherwise it might have been a different outcome.
“My son was travelling in the car behind us, and he said it was terrifying to watch – we nose-dived off the edge!
“We are grateful to God the car didn’t turn
Division 2 Councillor Sworn In
Councillor Clay Bauman was officially sworn into his new role as Councillor for Division 2 on Tuesday morning with a special ceremony held in his honour at the Proserpine Council Offices.
Attended by council staff, other Councillors, Mayor Julie Hall and Cr Bauman’s close friends and family, the formalities took place in the main meeting room where Cr Bauman signed the official documents and was welcomed in by the Mayor and Chief Executive Officer.
Mayor Hall gave her advice for starting the new role and said she was pleased to finally have a full team together.
“You’re on the inside now Clay so it’s both an honour and a privilege to be
voted in to represent your division and the greater Whitsunday community,” she said.
“Through your position in the organisation, I am sure you’ll enjoy the journey of working in the local government.
“My advice is work hard, be open to learning and listen – and you can’t go wrong”
“I am happy we now once again have a full team of Councillors, and we can move into 2023 with less election disruption so we can focus on the job of working with our community.”
Local government in the Whitsundays has seen much uncertainty in 2022, with the previous Mayor Andrew Willcox leaving the position when he was
elected as the Federal Member for Dawson in May.
His position was filled in July by the newly elected Mayor Julie Hall but shortly afterwards the previous Councillor for Division 2, Al Grundy, resigned from his role, leaving another vacancy at the table.
Cr Bauman’s appointment as Councillor for Division 2 marks the first time since May that Whitsunday Regional Council have had a full team onboard.
In officially accepting his role on Tuesday, Cr Bauman said that he was excited to get started.
“I am very happy to be the newest member of the team and I look forward to working with all of you for the better of the Whitsundays region,” he said.
over after crashing through the barrier.”
Once the vehicle came to a halt, staff from Bunnings and someone travelling behind them immediately raced over to check on their welfare.
Miraculously everyone was unharmed, although Ruth reported minor whiplash the following day.
The ambulance, police and fire brigade attended the scene and took charge.
Meanwhile, the Bunnings staff brought out ice blocks for the children, a box of teddy bears and some craft items.
“The loving response from many people who stopped to help was so touching,” said Ruth.
“We felt very looked after.”
The following week Ruth heard that this was not the first time there had been an accident at that location.
“The tow truck operator told us there had been a lot of accidents there because of the camber of the roundabout being really faulty,” she explained.
“Hopefully something can be done before anything worse happens.”
The Russell family are very grateful to everyone who helped on the day and decided to share their story hoping to raise awareness for other road users to take great care when driving at this time of year, especially after the rain.

Bowen Home Wins Christmas Lights Comp
ABowen family are celebrating this week following the announcement that they won the Whitsunday Regional Council’s ‘Our Whitsunday Way’ Christmas Lights Competition.
The Carnes family moved to Bowen from the Gold Coast 18 months ago and live on a one-acre property on Mount Nutt Road which has 50-metres of main road frontage and is decorated with bright lights and festive cheer.
Danielle and Daniel Carnes have two children, who are now 12 and 11 years old, and started decorating their front lawn with Christmas lights six years ago.
“It’s been wonderful while the kids have been young,” said Danielle.
“And we just love seeing the smiles on their faces.”
A huge inflatable gingerbread family take centre stage and a brightly lit gingerbread house is Danielle’s favourite new addition.
Glittering reindeer, marching nutcrackers and an enormous glowing Christmas tree with a bright star atop encourages families to stop and marvel at the entrancing display every evening in the run-
up to Christmas.
With all these magical features, it is easy to see how the Mount Nutt Road house was picked from the 26 other entries across the region.
Despite this, Danielle says she was shocked to hear they had won.
“We were very surprised considering it was out of the whole region,” she said.
“We are super-stoked, and we can’t wait to go to Daydream Island and out to the Reef!”
The competition was judged by the following criteria – effort, creativity and theming - and as a prize, the Carnes’ family received a night on Daydream Island for two adults and two children with a $500 island credit, plus a trip on Cruise Whitsunday’s ReefWorld.
The family are planning on redeeming their prize over the Christmas holidays and Danielle said that she and her husband love designing the display each year and are already planning a few new additions next year.
“Thanks everyone for your support,” she said.
“We love seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces.”

Bridge Under Troubled Waters
Earlier this month the approaches to the brand new $4.5 million Ted Cunningham Bridge were washed away by flood waters and since then residents have been forced to use the old bridge which has “reached end of useful life” and is now restricted to a maximum of a ten-tonne load.
“Investigations have determined that some of the footings are not as good as we thought,” said Darren Raeck, Manager of Roads and Drainage for Whitsunday Regional Council.
“Its structural integrity is a bit unknown which is why we have a load limit of ten tonne so that school buses, fuel trucks, cars and utes can get through but no heavy vehicles.”
Council have reinforced the previously disused bridge with a gravel road base, mixed with cement to make it more durable but residents are concerned it will be washed away with the next rainfall.
Mr Raeck reassures residents that Council will “continue to monitor the location and will continue to react and respond and reinstate access as quickly as possible” if this does occur.
It is estimated that it could be upwards of three months before the new bridge is restored, with an estimated two month con-
sultation period to discover the fault.
“We’re just working through with the contractor on why the approaches failed and once we’ve determined that, we’ll work out the best solution,” said Mr Raeck.
“If it’s a matter of replacing it like-for-like it won’t take too long and could be fixed in a matter of weeks but if we decide we need to do more extensive works and extend the bridge that will take a lot more time.”
The bridge was built with principal project requirements and budget established prior to the tender that the contractor follows and that the best and most cost effective design is chosen for the best long-term outcome.
Out And About With Zonta
It’s a busy time of year for our local charities and in particular the local Zontarians who have contributed in multiple ways throughout our community over the past few months.
Pamper Packs have been lovingly created and sent to the Women’s Refuge through Whitsunday Counselling and Support. “We do this every year,” said Marlene Reiffel from the Zonta Club of the Whitsundays.
“Zonta has assembled many gorgeous items that people would love to receive so they can be a little bit spoilt over the Christmas period.”
In addition, the large group of local Zontarians each brought a special present for a child to their annual Christmas lunch earlier this month.
They are distributed to children in the Whitsundays and Marlene says she hopes “the tradition of giving to children may also be picked up by other clubs in the area”.
Zonta also assembled three hampers that have been given to Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre’s ‘Adopt A Family’ appeal.
Not only is it important to give to those less fortunate at Christmas, Zonta believe it is also important to use this opportunity to raise awareness for their ‘NO to violence” campaign.
This is part of a worldwide initiative to stop violence and forms part of 16 days of activism to raise awareness of the issue.
Constantly engaging with the community and doing good wherever they can, the Zonta Club of the Whitsundays are tireless in their efforts.

Council Splash The Cash On Sports And Athletes
Aseries of the Whitsundays’ sporting clubs and junior athletes have received some early Christmas presents courtesy of Whitsunday Regional Council.
Council approved Sports and Recreation grants for five of the region’s sports groups in an end-of-year cash splash, with a total of $14,000 distributed amongst the clubs.
Bowen Seagulls Junior Rugby League received the largest grant ($5,500), with Bowen Netball Association and Whitsunday Weightlifting Association receiving $3,000 each, as well as Proserpine BMX Club receiving $1,500, and Tennis Whitsunday Club $1,000.
As well, Council allocated Financial Support to some of the Whitsundays’ Junior Elite Athletes in the same meeting: Sophie Fletcher, Kayla Vella, and Catherine Maund.
Sophie Fletcher – who received support of $250 dollars through the Council led program – will represent North Queensland at the State Level for both running and swimming in the 11- and 12-years category of the Hervey Bay Aquathlon Championships in February next year.
Kayla Vella, a Queensland representative for touch football, has already competed in her U15s Girls Touch Championships in Wagga Wagga –for which she received $1,000 support from Council.
As well, young athlete Catherine Maund received $1,000 to represent the state in Horseball Team Championships in Equitana, Melbourne back in November.
The Whitsundays has, in the past and even recently, produced some of the country’s exceptional Horseball players – a sport that combines the elements of horseback riding with polo, rugby, netball, and basketball. Most notably with Ms Maund herself, who travelled as part of the Horseball Australia team to France earlier this year alongside fellow Whitsundays rider Charlotte Adams.
That Financial Support comes after a major set of donations in November to Horseball athletes Ruby Cran, Amy Gray, Lachlan Gray, Charlotte Adams, Charlotte Lee, and Brooke Mizzi – each of whom received $1,000 to head to the Horseball Championships.
Alongside them were Junior Elite Athletes Corey Stroud – who will head to an International Futsal competition, representing his country and receiving $2,000, as well as Jacob Godden, who already competed in the National Futsal Championships and was granted $2,000
A Whitsunday Regional Council spokesperson said it was “incredible to see our junior athletes competing at such a high level.”
Bicentennial Boardwalk To Receive Upgrade
Whitsunday Regional Council have announced the awarding of the contract for the first part of major upgrades to Airlie Beach’s Bicentennial Boardwalk, with the total project closing in on $3.5 million.
The design for upgrades to each of the Boardwalk’s three sections will be delivered by local business Plants Whitsunday – who worked on recent comparable Council projects such as the Airlie Beach Lagoon deck installation.
Council’s Coordinator Capital Project Delivery Michael Downing said the total “renewal” will eventually encompass the entirety of the boardwalk and its three sections from VMR to Shingley, Sorrento to Coral Sea Resort, and the Broadwater Avenue section.
He said these initial upgrades were
for “Separable Portion 2” and will cost over $902 thousand dollars.
“We will be replacing the full structure on the Sorrento to Coral Sea Resort, starting hopefully around April [2023],” Mr Downing said.
“In those months before, [Plants Whitsunday] will be designing the whole renewal of the boardwalk.”
Council have provided Plants Whitsunday with a provisional $2.5 million for Separable Portion 1 and 3 of the Boardwalk, subject to funding and future budgetary approvals for 2023-25
The boardwalk’s entire structure will be replaced as part of the upgrades – save for the footing, which is embedded into the rock and will “remain suitable for reuse”.
“The rest of the structure, mainly the timber, will be replaced because
of the maintenance it takes,” Mr Downing said.
“Anyone using the boardwalk will notice there are people down there almost every day replacing boards, and it’s a significant cost. We’ve used some external funding to do this first stage and hopefully in the next few years the other stages.”
Mr Downing also said that, as part of the new design, the width of the boardwalk will be expanded, bringing it to roughly 3.5-metres wide.
“This is mainly because of the number of users; so, while we do it, why not upgrade it and get better width?” he said.
During the Portion 2 upgrades, the Boardwalk will be inaccessible to residents and a concrete timeline for the works has yet to be announced by Council.

Free Community Christmas Lunch You’re
If you are alone or struggling with your finances this festive season, you don’t need to survive by yourself – there are a community of kind people who have organised a free community Christmas and you’re invited.
Stella Life Care and Stella Community understand that although Christmas Day is traditionally a time for celebration, for many it is a time when life’s problems are magnified.
It is estimated that 3.6 million Australians experience food insecurity at some time during the year, 27% of which are children. You are not alone.
In fact, Faileen James, CEO of Stella Life Care in Bowen says that, from the number of RSVPs to date, it is clear there is a real need for this Christmas generosity.
Everyone who attends will receive a small gift, and the sit-down lunch will be served by a small, dedicated volunteer and staff team from Stella Life Care.
“The spirit of Christmas is about giving and enjoying a sense of community,” Ms James said.
“No one should be alone or go hungry. We understand it can be a tough time for some, so we will open our doors to provide companionship, laughter and fun, and other support to anyone who comes”
This is one of two free community Christmas Day lunches, the other will be taking place at Whitsunday PCYC.

Christmas Gifts – Can You Help?
While families across the Whitsundays come together to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company this Christmas, we must remember there are also those who are alone, experiencing homelessness or disadvantage.
For those people in our community, Christmas can be an extremely difficult time of year.
Fortunately, there are ways that we can all help and Stella Life Care and Stella Community are asking for local businesses and members of the community to dig deep and donate to help their worthy cause.
“We’d love to see other local businesses and charities jump on board by providing
donated food, goods or even small gifts that will help us put food on the table at our Christmas Day lunch and a smile on someone’s face,” said Bruce Button, Stella Life Care Director.
“It would be even better if community donations allowed us to send home some home-cooked meals and treats for people to enjoy throughout the entire Christmas period.”
If you would like to help provide food or a small gift for someone less fortunate over the Christmas period, you can contact Faileen James, CEO via email: info@stellalife.com.au or call: 0435 673 109.

The Festive Season is here, and it’s got a familiar rhythm. That frenzy of activity as we try to get work and family organized in the lead up, and then the beautiful relax as we kick back for a well-deserved break with family and friends.
With most having at least a week off and starting to slow down over Xmas, our thoughts often turn to reflecting on the last 12 months as we come to the big reset that is New Year’s Eve. It’s a good time to look backwards and reflect but also to look forwards and plan, when our mind has had Xmas to wind down from the daily grind and we can think clearly.
The trick with those New Years resolutions is to actually follow them through. We go back to work and progressively get wound back up and all those resolutions get steamrolled by ‘life’. The key is to do something small and quick before it’s too late.

Christmas Hampers Assist Hundreds Of Bowen Residents
The combined effort of several of Bowen’s non-for-profits, and kind donations from local community, saw more than 400 residents supported with ‘Christmas Hampers’ in early December.
Facilitated by Bowen Neighbourhood Centre and Cooinda Family Centre, the annual Bowen Christmas Hamper Appeal assisted over 170 households in the Whitsundays far north this holiday season.
Bowen Neighbourhood Centre Coordinator Stephanie Cora said the support from the Bowen community and the collaboration between its non-for-profit groups was vital during Christmas, which “can be a financially difficult time of year for families with and without children”.
“On Christmas morning, most children wake up early rushing to check the Christmas tree for gifts,” Ms Cora said.
“Unfortunately for some families this isn’t the case. What can be the most joyous time of the year for many can also be a financially stressful experience for others.
“The Bowen Neighbourhood Centre and Cooinda Family Centre, as well as The Salvation Army, Chayim Community Care, and the Bowen QCWA Branch have come together to ensure every child has presents under the tree this year.”
The Appeal – which began seeking donations from the local community in No-
vember – delivers hampers of ‘Christmas goodies, biscuits, cordial, sweet treats, tinned food, vouchers, and gifts for children’ to those in need.
Over 200 children and 190 adults applied for hampers this year, with approximately 20 further ‘walk ins’ who missed the application deadline, but still received assistance with hampers because of the “generous donations from local businesses and community members in Bowen.”
A Christmas Pop-up shop – set up by Bowen’s Salvation Army Citadel for families with children - also provided further gifts, with 80 local families with 203 children selecting toys and other gifts.
Ms Cora said the provision of a further Christmas Hamper Pop-up Shop for community members to access “supports Bowen Neighbourhood Centre’s vision to always contribute towards the dignity, well-being, and quality of life of the community we support.”
Another Christmas Pop-up shop was held at the new Bowen Community Centre for singles and couples without dependent children – which 110 adults utilised, being offered vouchers, Christmas treats, toiletries, homemade Christmas cakes and even toys to select from for those with grandchildren.

Mental Health Projects A “Priority” In Far North
Whitsunday Regional Council hope to secure $66,000 in funding from a new mental health project to deliver three activities in Bowen and Collinsville in the New Year after Mackay Health identified the region as “priority”.
In Council’s final ordinary meeting of 2022, Councillors voted in favour of seeking funding for The Tackling Regional Adversity through Connected Communities (TRACC) Grants.
It is hoped TRACC will fund three events in Bowen: The Multicultural Festival, a Blue Tree Project, and a Come and Try event for sporting and recreation clubs. The three activities were chosen during earlier discussions at the Bowen TRACC Grants Workshop on October 24 between Councillors Michelle Wright and Mike Brunker, Director of Community Services Julie Wright as well as local community groups, industry, and health services representatives.
Council’s Economic Development Manager, Gary Warrener said the first project, the Multicultural Festival – costing $31,750will “invite our community to celebrate and learn about the cultures within our region.”
“Cultural groups will be invited to share their culture and heritage through mu-
sic, storytelling, performance-based entertainment and arts during the day,” Mr Warrener said.
“The second TRACC event, The Blue Tree Project, will install a dead tree at the entrance of Denison Park that is painted blue. The project will include a day that will start off with club members participating in the Gratitude, Resilience, Intent and Pride (GRIP) wellbeing program run by the QRL, followed by members painting the tree blue.”
The $2,500 requested funding will assist with the costs of the transport and concrete for the tree, paint, paint accessories and a sign to be installed.
The final event proposed is a sporting and recreation club “Come and Try day” – for which Council will use $31,750 of the funding.
“[It] will invite clubs to showcase at a free community day to encourage greater participation from members of the community that are isolated,” he said.
“The projects were selected because they support mental health awareness and encourage community engagement and participation.”
Each activity is set to take place in the 2023/24 financial year.

Fitter For Life
Bowen PCYC hosted a trial class for its newest gymnastics program last week aimed at helping seniors improve their mobility, all while having a bit of fun.
The local non-for-profit’s ‘Fitter for Life’ class – a strengthening and balancing curriculum devised by Gymnastics Australia - was a “huge hit”, hosting more than 25 community members.
Led by qualified, nationally accredited coach Tracey Hivon, Fitter for Life classes incorporate light stretching, very light weight training, ball activities, brain training activities, and coordinated sequences of light cardio with the aim to stimulate the mind and body.
Bowen PCYC Branch Manager and Police Sergeant Michelle O’Regan said the Gymnastics program is a “fun, fundamental movement program and social opportunity that aims to help seniors improve their
mobility, strength, and coordination”.
“We’ve been working towards getting this program up and running for the last 18 months,” Sergeant O’Regan said.
“We’re very lucky to have Tracey, who has 20 plus years of delivering fitness classes, and tailors the classes to the group she’s facilitating to.”
The class is predominantly for those 50 and over, although younger persons may attend.
Ms O’Regan said this was the “full circle” for the PCYC’s gymnastics program.
“It’s just wonderful now to be able to offer this gymnastics curriculum that delivers something from toddlers right through to people who are retired,” she said.
Multiple weekly classes will begin at the PCYC in the New Year, and any interested persons can enquire at (07) 4786 1383.
Community Markets Change Hands
One of the region’s longest-running weekly events has changed ownership after its facilitators of more than two decades step aside due to lack of volunteers.
The Bowen Lions Club advised Whitsunday Regional Council in late October that the organisation could no longer operate its weekly Bowen Community Sunday Markets from the end of 2022.
Their final bazaar as facilitators was held last Sunday, December 18. Rumours have abounded that the Bowen Lions would be ceasing operations, to which club President Peter Goodman said “was untrue”.
The market is now under the temporary management of a group who assisted Lions in the market’s running for many years and are comprised of the event’s stallholders, the Bowen Community Market Group Inc. non-for-profit, who will take charge until formal management decisions are made by local Council.
Lions had organised the markets weekly for 20 years, on average attracting 30 marketeers and 1,000 to 1,500 locals and visitors each Sunday.
Discussions with Council to find a new non-for-profit to facilitate the Hansen Park event began with the Lions Club reaching
With the Bowen Community Markets longevity and continuous “positive impact for the Bowen community” according to Council, Councillors voted unanimously to advertise on behalf of the group.
Councillors and Mayor Julie Hall extended their profound gratitude to the Lions Club for their exceptional community spirit.
“I would like to thank the Lions for their many years of running the markets in Bowen,” Mayor Hall said.
Bowen Community Market Group Inc. Secretary Leola Adams said the group has applied with Council to become the permanent custodians of the markets.
“We’ve made submission to council to see if we can be given the keys – but if we don’t get it and another group does, it’s still a win-win situation,” Ms Adams said.
“We will support anyone who will run the markets. So long as it continues, we’re happy because it’s a valuable community event.”
The next market will be held on January 8, 2023, by the Bowen Community Market Group Inc. while a permanent facilitator is found.

Thousands of visitors are expected to call in across the Whitsundays during the holiday season – but nowhere is the Christmas cheer more evident than in the forward bookings at The Big Mango Visitor Information Centre at Bowen in the coming weeks.
The town is expecting strong visitor numbers, and its information centre is always busy at this time of the year.
Manager of Bowen Tourism and Business, Leanne Abernethy said more than 1100 visitors called in last year in the five days the centre was open between Christmas and New Year and another 1076 people visited the centre in the first week in January.
“We may be even busier than that this year as there has already been a big increase in the number of international visitors,” she said.
“This time last year, the international borders were closed and we only had 14

overseas travellers in the entire month of December.
“This year, we have already welcomed 160 international tourists in December and the month is not over yet,” she said.
The visitor information centre has a large range of souvenirs and local produce including a lot of mango-themed merchandise which is proving very popular.
“We have everything from mango chutney and sauces to soaps, room fresheners, body trifle and even mango daquiri mix which would be ideal for Christmas.”
Ms Abernathy said there was another draw card for tourists: The Big Mango has recently been painted and the new vibrant colours have created a lot of interest in the past two weeks.
The Big Mango Visitor Information Centre will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day but open on all other days over the festive season.
Anew allied health clinic – and in turn more doctors - may be on the cards for Bowen as Whitsunday Regional Council enter into land-sale negotiations with a private developer.
A formal offer for the property at 9D Dalrymple Street, Bowen, was made by PKDS Property Holdings Pty Ltd, who stated their plans to construct an allied health clinic and accommodation to support the attending clinicians.
The announcement of more medical facilities comes as a potential boon for the small town, which was as recently as April this year shaken by news the Queens Beach Medical Centre was planning to permanently close its doors in August due to its two sole physicians retiring – a closure which fortunately did not eventuate.
Instead, the centre was purchased by Dr Ramy Ibrahim, who has since expanded the clinic - which was opened almost four decades ago - to four clinicians, retaining
its two potentially retiring, “legendary doctors” and planning to hire more in the future.
Whitsunday Regional Councillors called the scare a “wake up call”, and State Member for Burdekin Dale Last said it would have taken almost 40 per cent of GPs out of Bowen – with only three centres servicing its roughly 12,000 population.
To shore up the Whitsundays far north, Councillors wholeheartedly endorsed the creation of not only a new allied health centre but the corresponding accommodation with it.
Councillor Mike Brunker advocated for the sale and said that this is a time of housing crisis and of a “medical crisis” in Queensland’s rural regions.
Negotiations and standard settlement of the property sale is expected within the next 30 days.

Barra Bonanza In The New Year
“The home of the one-metre barra” is set for a big boost with Whitsunday Regional Council plans to educate locals and visitors on the joys of recreational fishing.
Lake Proserpine has long been known by sports fishermen – and keen angling locals – as the trophy hunting spot for the tropical river fish, and now Council are looking to spread the word.
Council plans to begin the ‘Whitsunday Barra Fishing Activation Project’ in 2023, a campaign which hopes to promote barramundi fishing techniques and showcase Lake Proserpine as the premier impounded barramundi fishery in the country.
The $15,000 project is seeking funding as part of the Queensland Community Fishing Grants 2022 and hopes to commence the education program in the new year.
Including a print and social media drive, the Whitsunday Barra Fishing Activation Project will deliver a brochure promoting barramundi fishing techniques for the “green” fisherman.
The campaign is also hoped to promote tourism to Lake Proserpine which has slowly been garnering a reputation as a place of natural
splendour for camping.
Whitsunday Regional Councillor John Collins said the campaign would draw great interest.
“I am excited that the Whitsunday Barra Fishing Activation Project will ensure that Lake Proserpine’s reputation as the barra mecca of Australia will be enhanced,” Cr Collins said.
“Having hundreds of vehicles each week travelling through Proserpine during peak season will create an estimated average spend of $395 on provisions and services per vehicle.”
“This means an economic injection into the region of up to $8 million annually and the potential to create an extra 58 jobs for locals,” he said.
Cr Collins said he would be “fighting for a spot to cast” once the campaign begins.
“26,000 barra fingerlings were recently released around the weed edges at Lake Prossie, so hopefully they can hide out and get a chance to grow into a ‘Holy Grail’ meter plus Barramundi,” he said.
“With those odds, there’s a remote chance even I could land a fish.”

Recreational fishing in the Whitsundays, and especially Lake Proserpine, is set for a boost thanks to a Whitsunday Regional Council awareness campaign
An exciting new program is coming to the Whitsundays, one that will offer new methods for monitoring and preventing the damage done by drifting ghost nets on the Great Barrier Reef.
Ghost nets is the term used for discarded fishing nets, which are thrown into the ocean by commercial fishing vessels.
These large drifting death traps easily entangle unsuspecting marine life such as seals and turtles.
They also fall to the bottom of the ocean and lay on the coral reef inhibiting the natural function of this diverse ecosystem. It is hoped this destruction will soon be
was searching for a way to reuse and recycle international commercial fishing echosounder buoys.
When they connected with SatLink, discussions led to them forming a partnership that will see the launch of Project ReCon - a world-first project that repurposes recovered echosounder buoys and then uses satellite technology to tag and track ghost nets while retrieval teams are mobilised to remove them.
Some ghost nets can be as large as football fields, so they are almost impossible for small vessels to remove, they require the attention of experts with larger vessels and purpose-built equipment.
“With our teams looking for ways to reuse and recycle international commercial fishing echosounder buoys retrieved from beach clean-ups along the Reef, it was very much a case of who ya gonna call,” says Heidi Tait, CEO of Tangaroa Blue Foundation.
“Turns out, Satlink was the ghost net buster we needed to speak with to be able to repurpose the buoys and divert them from landfill.”
Exciting Updates
This perfect partnership will see the launch of local activities in the Whitsundays early next year and it will then be rolled out around Australia through the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) network.
said
“The technology also allows for virtual fences to be put around reefs providing notifications before nets impact critically sensitive areas.”
Special Envoy for the Great Barrier Reef and Labor Senator for Queensland, Senator Nita Green said that she is excited by the project.
“It is a further step in the right direction to one day ensuring our waters are free from ghost nets. Well done to everyone involved,” she said.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile
Utter insanity, thy name is Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.
I’m not entirely sure how someone convinced Shawn Mendes to star as a computer-generated, singing reptile. But thank goodness they did; we’d all been asking for it.
Most of the film’s fun comes from that absurd premise which is the topping to a standard film-base: The Primm family (Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy, Winslow Fegley) have moved to New York City, and their young son, Josh, is struggling to adapt to his new school. How do we remedy that? We give him a singing crocodile named Lyle (Shawn Mendes). It’s all very Paddington without the foppish, British charm.
But where it lacks in that department, it makes up in spades of this fever-dream, phantasmagorical quality that makes it insane for viewers over 20, but sensical for those under it.
Why wouldn’t the crocodile have a taste for baths, caviar, and great music? It’s that dream-logic, kid’s storybook styling that
is Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’s biggest strength. And of course, as a children’s book, it has that moral heart of: Being an outcast isn’t a bad thing – be you, be unique.
So, after all of that mess of moral signalling, we have a story about Lyle’s existence being threatened by the evil neighbor Mr. Grumps (Brett Gelman). So the Primm’s must band together with Lyle’s charismatic owner, Hector P. Valenti (Javier Bardem – yes, he’s in this), to show the world that family can come from the most unexpected places and there’s nothing wrong with a big singing crocodile with an even bigger personality.
Regardless of the absurdity, there is an impressive feat of technical wizardry on display in Will Speck’s film that reminds of Robert Zemeckis’ Who Framed Roger Rabbit. In the sense, at least, that the actors are interacting with something actually there, if cartoonish, crocodile.
A good bit of family fun for the school holidays.

Globetrotting, ‘Atlantic Crossing’: A Rod Stewart tribute concert with the look, the voice, and the moves is making its way to the Whitsundays’ ‘Sailing town’ in early January
Direct from America, ‘Forever Rod’, a Rod Stewart and Cher Show is coming to The Pub for two free shows on Tuesday, January 3, and Wednesday, January 4.
Helmed by Rob Caudill as Rod Stewart and Ashleigh Toole as Cher - two worldclass performers – this tribute act is a high-calibre affair not to be missed at the Airlie Beach Hotel as the very best of both artists is on display.
People stop Rob Caudill in airports for autographs. They stare at him in restaurants. And when he struts on stage, women scream themselves hoarse. Why?
Well, ‘Some Guys Have All The Luck’, Rob
Caudill amongst them; he is an absolute dead ringer for Rod Stewart.
There’s the high-definition jawline, the shock of spiky blonde hair, but ‘Hold On’, this is the kicker: He has the nose.
And if that weren’t enough, Rob has Rod’s naturally raspy voice, which sounds like the legendary Stewart, even allowing him to easily nail every high note from the singer’s younger days.
He has Rod’s repertoire of favourites down pat: Maggie May, Hot Legs, Rhythm of My Heart, Forever Young, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You, Tonight’s the Night, Do You Think I’m Sexy, and so many more – and it’s taken him all over the world, mesmerizing crowds with his amazing vocals and high energy portrayal.
And his credentials backup his looks: He’s been a part of the longest running Las Ve-
gas based tribute show, ‘Legends In Concert’, for 15 years.
“I’ve got the greatest job in the world, making a living doing something I love,” Rob said.
In fact, those Las Vegas shows have left “no doubt about it”, with some famous faces attending over the years – take it from Joe Walsh of ‘The Eagles’: “This is one impersonator that will make you do a double take. He is that good.”
And John Entwhistle of ‘The Who’ had some kind words to say, too: “Rob’s voice and look is unbelievable. It is like looking at Rod Stewart himself”
Adding to the excitement is who Rob will share the spotlight with at The Pub. Ashleigh Toole – a storied songstress who made it into the top 12 of Australian Idol
in 2009, wowing the judges – will show off her honed likeness to Cher, embodying the famed singer as If I Could Turn Back Time and a young Cher is back on the BarTop Stage.
“Cher has many idiosyncrasies that I include in my show,” Ashleigh said. “It’s a lot of hard work but a lot of fun at the same time.”
Don’t miss their combined shows – the fun, the electricity – when it arrives at the Airlie Beach Hotel in the New Year for absolutely free.

BOWLS
This year has been “extraordinary” for Airlie Beach Bowls Club where is has exceeded expectations, finishing 2022 as the number one Bowls Club of the Mackay District and surrounding areas.
Members of the club put in some exceptional performances throughout the year, with highlights including the performances of Betty Nicole and Carol Crosbie.
As well, Men’s club champion Manny Isgro proved his excellence, exceeding his own high standards and showing that anything is possible with practice – with Nik Fernbach also embodying that same mentality.
Members Harry Quod, Shane Spann, John Fielding, Peter Barratt, Luke Kinnear, Warren Mills, Andrew Butler, Russell Jackson, Mark Mawson, Rod Howard, and Bob McMahon representedour Division One team and finishing a very credible second. Other wonderful players that achieved fantastic success were Col Morris, Andy McDougall, John Askew, and John Brown.
On the ladies’ side there was Margo Stanley, Lyn Graham, Bev Taylor, Juanita Matterson, Jill Spencer, and Jill Mazlin-Petersen all excelling with district bowls success.
And a special mention must go to the club’s fantastic Vice Chairperson, Karen Jenson, whom was awarded the Club Person of the Year, with efforts far and beyond the call of duty.
Ms Jensen effectively led Airlie Beach Bowls Club this year, organising many
functions, projects, promotions, and catering without any fuss and sacrificing her own bowls to do so.
Betty and Tony Whitehorn, Rick Galea, Ash Warland, Terry Clarke, Bob Spees, Tim Taylor, and Merve Stewart also deserve special thanks for their efforts.
We look forward to what the new year will bring and all be hopeful that we can exceed our expectations for 2023.

Airlie Beach parkrun
COMMUNITY
This week 69 people ran, jogged, and walked the waterfront course at Airlie Beach parkrun, of whom 20 were first timers and eight recorded new personal bests.
Well done to Ulrika, Shailee, Calvin, Katie, Warren, Blake, Anne, and Jai.
The event was made possible by 14 wonderful volunteers: Nick, Rebecca, Bossie, Ronald, Ashley, Shane, Jess, Sebastian, Lilliana, Laura (Run Director), Ken, Lynne, Joanne, and Margaret.
One of the parkrun’s ‘Tail Walkers’ reached the milestones of 50 volunteers this week - Jo!
Upcoming special runs will see runners take part in a Christmas Eve parkrun, Christmas Day parkrun, New Year’s Eve parkrun, and a New Year’s Day parkrun – start those resolutions bright and early.
Every Saturday (and for the Christmas day/New Year’s Day special parkruns) Airlie Beach parkrun meets at 6.50am for a briefing at area D, Coral Sea Marina (adjacent to the top carpark). Parking is free in the lower carpark till 9.30am if a parkrun barcode is placed on the dashboard. Post parkrun coffee and chat is held at My Rainbow Bakery, Shingley Beach.
The best-kept secret about parkrun is that it’s not about running - it’s about bringing people together in public
parks and open spaces across the world to have some fun in a friendly, social and supportive environment.
You can walk or run the five-kilometre course (pushing a pram or with one dog on a short lead if you want to), lend a helping hand as a volunteer in a wide range of super-easy roles, or simply spectate and socialise on the sidelines.
There are no winners at parkrun and nobody comes last – our amazing Tail Walkers do. Regular participation is rewarded rather than performance, with ‘parkrun milestone shirts’ available to people to recognise their achievements in coming along.

The Difference Eight Weeks Makes
FITNESS
Just over two months ago, scores of Whitsunday locals signed up for an ‘Eight Week Challenge’ to pit themselves against themselves at F45 Airlie Beach.
What exactly is an eight-week challenge? It’s in the name: A two-month fitness program combining F45’s signature 45-minute circuit workout classes with a detailed meal plan - and a lot of motivation, extrinsic and intrinsic.
The group cut their daily calories in half or more, upped their gym-going, and tried to transform their bodies, and in turn, their mindsets over a little more than 60 days.
So, how did they go? Well, you can change your life in just two months –take it from Whitsunday Life journalist Declan Durrant.
Team Training, Life Changing With Declan Durrant
Ilike to think that there is often - and this is not a one-size-fits-all (pardon the pun) – a correlation between weight gain and contentedness.
Over the last three or so years, I fell in love with two things: My partner and food.
And I don’t think those two things are unrelated, and they certainly have a strong relationship to my happiness. We eat delicious things together which are usually (and unfortunately) bad for us, but we do it together.
But I think the major problem for me was moderation, not necessarily the cookie itself, it was the volume of cookies – and that’s plural.
Over those three years, I put on roughly nine kilograms. And I’m lucky enough to be the kind of person who seemingly carries their weight well – you wouldn’t necessarily see it, although I did.
I signed up, alongside my partner, for the F45 Eight-Week Challenge expecting results if I stuck to it – no one is immune to the laws of biology; you can’t take out more calories than you put in without it coming from somewhere else.
At the start I weighed in at 89.5 kilograms,
Cannons Claim Medal At Queensland Championships
Seven Cannonvale Cannons participated at the 2022 McDonald’s Queensland Championships in Brisbane last week, representing the club and the region in the relays.
Tora Delac, Holly Perrin, Remy Hedges, and Tiana Bell swam an awesome time of 2.03.62 in the Girls 16 years and Under Freestyle relay, while Jacob Dewis, Jy Parkinson, Remy Hedges, and Holly Perrin swam in the Cannons’ Open Mixed Freestyle relay.
The Open Mixed team completed an excellent time of 1.49.87.
Jacob Dewis and Jy Parkinson were selected to compete in the NQ 15 years and Over Male Medley relay and were very excited with their silver medal.
Coach Mark Erickson said he was very pleased and proud of all the Cannons and their achievements. During the first few days of the championships.
The star performer was 17-year-old Jy Parkinson who competed in six events and made four finals.
Jy won a bronze medal for his 100-metre Backstroke in a time of 58.93, and a silver medal for his 200-metre Backstroke in a time of 2.08.78.
Jy made the final for 50-metre Backstroke
and came fifth in Queensland, as well as making the finals for 100-metre Butterfly, where he placed sixth. Unfortunately, Jy had to pull out of his last few events due to a shoulder injury.
Jacob Dewis, also aged 17, swam very well in his 50-metre and 100-metre Butterfly.
Holly Perrin, 15, swam a super 50-metre Backstroke and 50-metre Butterfly. She swam a 0.88 second personal best in her Backstroke.
Jacob Bell, aged 15 years, swam a big programme of six events. Even though he swam personal bests in his 50-metre events, his best swims placing third and fifth in Queensland were his 1500-metre
with 22.1 per cent body fat.
The eight weeks had their extremely difficult moments, undoubtedly as it did for all the challengers, I’m sure (Plenty of Christmas parties spent eating apples and cashews in the corner while we watched others dig into dishes of chocolate mousse), but we stayed strong.
At the end, on Saturday of last week, they unveiled the winners - people with the biggest drop in body fat percentage compared to their starting weight: In the Female, Angela Blake won, losing 11.5 per cent.
And me: I ended up losing 9.5 per cent of my body fat (8.5 kilograms), going down to 81 and taking my percent body fat to 16.6.
I didn’t expect to win anything, let alone a ‘Golden Kettlebell’. All I wanted was to achieve my personal goals – I think I’m in line with every challenger there. For me, this challenge shifted my perspective on myself, my body, and my mind. And I can’t recommend it highly enough.
F45’s motto is “Team Training, Life Changing”. And I believe it.
F45 Airlie Beach will run its first six-week challenge in 2023 starting January 30.
Freestyle and 800-metre Freestyle. He was surprised with his bronze medal in the 1500-metre.
Remy Hedges, aged 14, competed in four individual events: 200-metre IM, 50-metre, 100-metre, and 200-metre Breaststroke.
Her best swims were her 50-metre Breaststroke with a 0.1 second personal best and her 200-metre Breaststroke which placed her first reserve for the final.
Tora Delac, aged 12, swam a terrific 50-metre Freestyle in 32.04 seconds.
