Editor’s Note

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to a brand-new edition!

We now officially produce five different publications from our little publishing house here in Cannonvale – for those of you that don’t know, these are Core Life Magazine, Tripping Magazine, Mackay Life Newspaper, Burdekin Life Newspaper and Whitsunday Life Newspaper.

Four of these are printed in a flip-book format where readers receive two publica-

tions in the same ‘book’, and all of them are generated, produced, and of course delivered locally.

Not bad for a publishing group that had specialised in lifestyle magazines before venturing into weekly printed news three years ago!

Last week, 10 of us ventured up to the Burdekin to launch the first issue of Burdekin Life Newspaper and we were amazed by the warm welcome we received.

(For those of you who read this column every week, my speech went really well thank you, and I am so glad I pushed myself into facing my fear!)

The launch of a new weekly newspaper was very exciting for residents of the Burdekin, who had been without a community newspaper for over a year.

While we were there, we saw first-hand how much it was missed – papers were flying off stands, we were getting calls to re-stock and so many people were walking around with a copy tucked under their

arms.

Sometimes, you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone!

Local businesses had nowhere to share their achievements, events slipped by without coverage, proud parents couldn’t smile at their child’s appearance in print and worst of all, without the funeral notices, no-one knew who had passed away that week!

While social media undoubtedly connects, it seems the printed community paper is well and truly alive in the regions and it is great to see our publications equally well received across the Burdekin, Mackay and right here in the Whitsundays.

Thank you to all our readers and thank you to our incredible team who deliver such exceptional work week after week.

HELPING MAKE HISTORY

Our local non-for-profit community organisations are run by a sea of volunteers who kindly give their time to enrich the tapestry of local life. Behind the scenes, there is also a host of local businesses who donate money to these organisations and ensure the day-to-day operations of these important local assets are kept open, now and into the future.

One of these local assets is the Proserpine Historical Museum which has, for several decades, been welcoming many visitors.

From school children to passing tourists, everyone has left the museum with a deeper understanding of local culture and the rich history of our region.

Paying homage to this vital contribution is a local family business that has just donat-

ed $2,950 to the museum.

Each year, Filby’s Motors make a donation for every car sold across the four brands to the Sponsorship Program which is then donated back into community organisations.

And this year, they chose the local museum.

“So thoughtful!” said a museum spokesperson.

“As the museum is a not-for-profit organisation, we really appreciate this kind gesture.

“This donation will be used for future projects, thank you for your continued support.”

Last week, Blake Filby and Emily Harvey

presented the cheque to volunteers Peter, Alisa, Gloria, and Ros.

Does your business regularly donate? If so, we’d love to give you a shout out in the Good Deed Feed. Simply send us an email with a few details and your contact information to – bronte@mackayandwhitsundaylife.com – and we’ll get in touch.

STRIKE CONTINUES

Marine staff are continuing to strike for a second week following unresolvable negotiations between Cruise Whitsundays and the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA).

A fifth proposal was discussed last Friday, but the MUA are standing by their demands for staff to receive a 25 per cent pay rise, an amount that

Cruise Whitsundays have said is simply unviable for the business.

The tourism company said that they have met 12 out of 13 requests by the MUA and that they hope to reach a resolution soon.

This is the second seven-day period that marine workers have been on strike.

REMEMBERING THOSE LOST National Police Remembrance Day

Continued from page 1

Last Friday, September 29, was National Police Remembrance Day, a day to commemorate and honour the police servicemen and women who have passed away in the line of duty, as well as those who have died outside the line of duty.

The ceremony was particularly sombre, remembering the two south Queensland officers, Constable Matthew Arnold and Constable Rachel McCrow who lost their lives following a shooting incident on a regional property in December last year.

The service also commemorated seven officers across Queensland who passed away outside of their line of duty.

Senior Sergeant Nathan Blain shared the importance of National Remembrance Day.

“I have been a police officer for 27 years now, and this day has always been very close to my heart, and everyone treasures

this day. It’s important for us to honour the memory of those colleagues that we have lost over the year, who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” he explained.

“Not everyone is going to be happy all the time with what police do, but we feel that the far majority are very supportive of us, which is really reassuring.

“We saw that in December last year when we had the tragic loss of Constable Matthew Arnold and Constable Rachel McCrow,” Snr Srg Blain said.

“Here in the Whitsundays, we had people bringing us chocolates, letters of condolences, and sympathies, and this means a lot to us.

Memorial To Honour ADF Personnel

Lost In Helicopter Accident

In a unanimous decision by Whitsunday Regional Council, a memorial plaque will be erected in in honour of the four Australian Defence Force personnel lost in a helicopter accident off the coast of Airlie Beach.

A proposal by Councillor John Collins, the memorial plaque will pay respect to Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent, Captain Daniel Lyon, Warrant Officer Class 2 Joseph Laycock and Corporal Alexander Naggs.

These are the names of the four Australian Defence Force personnel who had been taking part in Talisman Sabre 2023 activities on July 28, when their MRH-90 Taipan helicopter experienced unprecedented catastrophic failure and plunged into Whitsunday waters.

“This memorial will mean a lot to the people in our region,” Councillor Collins explained.

“Our region, particularly the townspeople of Bowen, have welcomed the armed services since the inaugural Talisman Sabre in 2005.”

Hoping to use a state government grant,

Queensland Remembers Grants Program, which is set to close in October, Councillor Mike Brunker said that regardless of funding, the Council should erect a memorial.

“If we do this, we do it properly, and not rushed to meet a grant deadline,” Councillor Brunker said.

“If the funding is not there, I’m sure we can approach the ADF and other organisations.

“This needs to be done respectfully with a good and proper design.”

The ADF have since permanently grounded the Taipan helicopter, with American made UH-60 Black Hawk brought in instead.

“We don’t do the job for the thanks, but it’s nice when we do get the recognition of those we have lost.”

ON THE BEAT

“Home In Time For Footy”

On October 1, at about 4.15pm, Police allegedly intercepted a Toyota Landcruiser traveling at a spend of 144 kilometres an hour, in a 100 kilometre an hour speed zone.

Police spoke to the alleged driver, a 44-year-old Midge Point man, who allegedly explained that he was overtaking vehicles as he wanted to be home in time to watch the football.

He was issued an infringement notice, loss of eight demerit points and license suspension of six months.

His vehicle was not seized by police.

Sleepy Drunk Driver

A 22-year-old Jubilee Pocket man was issued with a notice to appear in court, following a road incident on September 29, at 11pm.

Police allege that his white Haval station wagon was found by community

members stationary in the middle of the road, on Shute Habour Road, with the driver asleep in the driver’s seat.

Police were contacted and attended the scene.

Following a roadside breath test, with a reading on 0.170 per cent, the driver was detained.

He will appear in Proserpine Magistrates Court later this month.

Attempted Break In

On September 27, at about 12.02am, an individual attempted to break into a home on Leet Crescent in Proserpine. The resident of the home was woken up by a loud noise from the side of their house, followed by their pet dog barking.

An unknown individual was then seen jumping the perimeter fence.

An entry attempt was made through windows and doors at the side of the home, but entry was not gained, and nothing stolen.

Local Sites And Local Stars Shine In New Blockbuster

Hitting the number one spot in both Netflix Australia and Netflix US, the recent blockbuster filmed right here in the Whitsundays, is already promoting our region to the world with its stunning backdrops and friendly local characters.

Released last week, Love Is In The Air stars

Aussie songstress Delta Goodrem and British heart-throb Joshua Sasse and follows the story of a young pilot who strives tto save her family business while her love interest does his best to close it.

Fortunately, this rom-com has a happy ending and you’ll have to watch it to find

out!

Dozens of locals took part in the filming, speaking highly of the support they were given and the friendliness of the production team.

Airlie Beach resident, Richard Evans initially applied to be an extra but was soon given a speaking part as the “elderly man” who starred in the meet-cute-moment when the two love interests meet for the first time.

“Delta was very very nice,” said Richard.

“There was a star power aura about her but at the same time she was humble and

helpful.

“Everyone I met was very supportive and patient – I think there is a lot of opportunity for future filming and arts in the Whitsundays.”

Lauriely Taylor filmed for a morning out near Cape Gloucester and said that, although she was only in the movie briefly, she loved being part of the whole production.

“The whole movie really showcased the area beautifully,” said Lauriely.

“Hopefully this really puts us on the map, again.”

Many local landmarks also featured in the movie, from Whitsunday Airport on Shute Harbour Road, which became the on-screen Fullerton Airways through to the beach north of Cape Gloucester which became the remote community where supplies were dropped and emergency evacuations took place.

Stunning aerial footage was also taken around the islands showing the extent of our lush green foliage, juxtaposed with the bright blue sea.

If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure you take a look.

Dog Owners Rejoice Boathaven Beach Off-Leash Area Permanently Approved

Agroup of sociable dog-lovers who play and swim with their dogs almost daily down at Boathaven Beach are celebrating this week as Council make the three-month off-leash trial, a permanent fixture.

Dog walkers at Boathaven Beach in Airlie Beach are now able to have their fur-babies off leash between 5.30am and 8.30am daily.

Mayor Julie Hall said the three-month trial ended on July 30 with only one formal complaint being received by Council during the trial period.

“After the successful three-month trial at Boathaven Beach, I’m pleased we can introduce a new dog off-leash area for Airlie Beach dog lovers,” she said.

“While Council is keen on making the region more dog friendly, the onus is on the community to be aware of responsible dog ownership rules and do the right thing.

“Council’s Local Law in relation to the effective control of dog requires that a person must not bring or permit an animal to be brought into a public place unless the animal is under the person’s effective control.

“This is for the safety of all dogs and to

ensure the safety of our community and visitors using the same area.

“It’s important for dogs to be under effective owner control at all times, including the designated dog off-leash areas,” Mayor Hall said.

Boathaven Beach is now one of thirteen approved dog off-leash areas:

• Queens Beach, Bowen

• Doughty Creek Mouth, Bowen

• Kings Beach, Bowen

• Denison Park, Bowen

• Shingley Beach, Airlie Beach (Eastern end only)

• Bicentennial Park, Cannonvale

• Cannonvale Beach (Sanded area; Eastern end; (Restricted Times - 5am-8am 5pm-8pm except 8:00am-9:00am & 2:30pm - 3:30pm school days)

• Gailbraith Park, Cannonvale

• Whisper Bay Boat Ramp, Cannonvale

• Wildlife Park, Jubilee Pocket - enclosure

• Keith Jones Estate Park, Proserpine

Council News And Views

It is exciting that our Council will have three Councillors acknowledged for their service to Local Government at the Qld Conference in October.

Over the next three weeks, we will recognise each Councillor starting with Division 3 Councillor John Collins for over a decade of service to his community.

John, or Sarge as he is known to locals, embarked on his journey in politics at the 2012 Qld Local Government elections, easily winning election with over 40 per cent of the vote against four rivals.

He was re-elected convincingly at the 2016 and 2020 local government elections and each term he has increased his majority vote, recording a massive 88 per cent majority at the 2020 election.

Serving as Deputy Mayor several times and armed with a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by his community and the opportunities for future economic growth, Cr John has consistently demonstrated an enthusiastic commitment to community progress.

His impact extends well beyond council chambers. His dedication to the Whitsunday and Proserpine community has delivered countless projects and events that have improved the liveability for his constituents.

With Cr John as a strong advocate, Council completed Stage 1 of the Lake Proserpine Master Plan in 2019 creating a revitalised camping area, including waterside bush camping sites, new public toilets and showers, designated fire pits, upgraded

New Board Announced For Tourism Whitsundays

4Five new members have been welcomed into the Tourism Whitsundays Board, breathing new life into an already dynamic group of local tourism professionals.

picnic facilities and three new fishing pontoons to improve access for boaties.

Cr John was proud to be the key driver behind continued development of the Lake Proserpine Recreational facilities with on-site caretakers and paid camping introduced in 2021. Lake Proserpine is now another jewel in the crown for the Whitsundays with recent figures showing it boasts an average annual economic injection of $7.95 million to the region.

Other key catalyst projects under John’s watch include the Proserpine Main Street upgrade, the construction of the popular Proserpine Water Park and the $20 million rebuild of the Proserpine Entertainment Centre.

However, his proudest moment during a decade as Councillor was being a part of the Disaster Management team and being Chairperson of its Recovery Team after Cyclone Debbie in early 2017.

It was through this role that Cr John’s care for his community stood out as he spent countless hours advocating for and assisting many locals with their dealings with the major Insurance companies and helping them sort their insurance issues.

Thank you, Councillor John Collins, for a decade of exceptional service.

Contributed by Mayor Julie Hall

The newly announced members are Nathan Fleming of Ocean Rafting, Sue Watson owner of Pinnacles Airlie Beach, Phil Browne Director of True Blue Sailing and Nicole Graham owner of Iconic Whitsunday Adventures and one invited member, Carly Povey of Bonza Airlines.

Nathan Fleming is a seasoned tourism professional who is dedicated to promoting the region with a commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.

He has been a driving force in shaping the industry landscape and says he looks forward to leveraging his skills and experience to further elevate tourism initiatives.

Sue Watson has worked in the travel industry for the past 30 years, 18 years managing resorts and before that, as a travel consultant.

She is looking forward to helping promote the Whitsundays as one of the best tourist destinations and being a “strong voice for the accommodation sector in this region.”

“I am extremely excited and proud to be a part of Tourism Whitsundays,” she said.

Phil Browne has worked in the tourism industry for the past 25 years and he hopes to bring renewed energy and focus to the youth and adventure market, which he considers a vital part of our community.

“I feel enormously thankful and proud to have been nominated onto the board, and I can’t wait to begin working with the other directors and the awesome team within

TW,” he said.

The board positions are as follows: Julie Telford as Chair, Tom Young as Deputy Chair, Sue Watson as Treasurer and Crystal Lacey as Secretary.

Nicole Graham has worked in the tourism industry for 28 years and says she enjoys its energy, people, and challenges.

“I am absolutely delighted to have been given the opportunity to join the board,” she said.

“I am eager to contribute my expertise and skills to the team, and I am confident that together, we will achieve great things.”

Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Whitsundays, Rick Hamilton said he is thrilled to have another strong group of individuals representing the board again this year.

“We have another strong Board leading us into the next year, with backgrounds covering island resorts, accommodation, marine operations, legal and airlines,” he said.

“The make up of this year’s board puts us in a great position to navigate the peaks and troughs expected over the next 12 months.

“I am looking forward to working closely with this Board and drawing on their considerable knowledge of The Whitsundays.”

Batteries should never be put in your recycling or waste bin. This includes rechargeable batteries and lithium-ion batteries in objects such as laptops, mobile phones, power tools, cameras, and e-vape machines. Used batteries may still contain residual charge and often produce sparks which can lead to fires in our waste trucks and recy cling facilities, putting our waste teams at risk, and potentially caus ing dangerous gases if waste is burned incorrectly.

To dispose of batteries

safety, make sure to always place sticky tape on the terminals before placing in your nearest battery recycling collection point.

Household Battery Recycling Bins are located at all of our Whitsunday Regional Council Customer Service Centres and Libraries. Bins can also be found at the Collinsville and Cannonvale Transfer Stations.

Great Barrier Reef Foundation Strategic Initiatives Director Melissa Rodgers said climate change is the greatest threat to our Reef and emissions reduction is an important action we can take to secure its future.

“It’s heartening to see so many local businesses getting on board by working towards a carbon neutral Reef industry in the Whitsundays as part of our Reef Islands Initiative,” Ms Rodgers said.

One of the initiatives aims to support the decarbonization of tourism by providing an innovative and easy-to-use online carbon calculator for businesses to measure their operational emissions from energy, water, and waste.

According to the Whitsunday Gross Pollutant Trap Project, the Top One litter item found in the wider Whitsunday region is cigarette butts.

Across Airlie Beach and Proserpine venues, 22 special cigarette bins were installed.

Magnums Venue Manager Rebecca Cook said they were more than happy to be on board with the initiative.

“A lot of our customers at Magnums are visitors to the region, who are drawn here by the beauty of our local area and of course the Great Barrier Reef, so we want to look after it in any way we can,” said Ms Cook.

“We did have smaller bins in place before,

Prossie Free RV Park Closes

Almost four years after it opened its doors, the free Proserpine RV park has now closed due to Whitsunday Regional Council’s decision not to renew the current lease.

This decision was made largely due to the required $600,000 of upgrades needed to be undertaken on the site. The development approval conditions stipulated in the new lease required the installation of drainage, lighting, and appropriate carpark seal to the parking area.

As the site is not owned by the Council, ownership of the upgrades would return to the landowner at the end of the lease.

While in service, the Proserpine RV Park had offered free 48-hour overnight RV parking and was located behind St Catherine’s Church, just off the main street.

The regular flow of grey nomads and other passing travellers from the RV site brought increased spend to local shops.

Council, however, decided that $600,000 was too much investment in a site they didn’t own and stated that the plan had always been to in-

Queensland.com

vest in their main local tourism asset, Proserpine Dam.

It is hoped that by developing this attraction the overall tourist numbers that utilise services and suppliers in Proserpine will also grow further.

While the majority of Councillors agreed to terminate the lease at last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Councillor Michelle Wright felt inclined to continue.

“There was a need in the community for the RV site,” she said.

“This is a restock and overnight stop

and I think we can get a grant to do this work.

“We knew what the conditions were then, and knew it wasn’t our land, when we signed on.”

Mayor Hall and Councillors Brunker and Clifford, however, were vocally opposed to continuing the lease.

“I would rather spend the money at our caravan park and put an overnight stop in for free,” said Councillor Clifford.

The Proserpine RV park officially closed on Tuesday this week.

The cigarette bins are also in partnership with Tangaroa Blue Foundation, supporting the wider ‘Ditch the Flick’ campaign.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation CEO Heidi Tait said that with the success of cigarette butt bins in other locations along the Great Barrier Reef through the ReefClean project, she was excited to now see them also rolled out here in the Whitsunday Region.

“The cigarette butt bins installed here and the ‘Ditch the Flick’ campaign is an excellent example of this, as it aims to educate people about cigarette butt litter and encourages smokers to bin their cigarette butts.

“By combining education and convenient, practical solutions, campaigns like this can help tackle the issue of marine debris and really make a difference.”

Proserpine Mill processed more than 86,200 tonnes of cane for the week, which was slightly above budget. There were some light, scattered showers in some harvesting districts, however there was no significant impact to operations.

Average weekly CCS dropped slightly, coming in under budget at 14.64 units. A large proportion of standover was processed last week, which impacted average CCS.

The highest CCS was 17.09 units from a rake of ratoon Q208 in the Lethebrook productivity district. Now that school holidays have come to a close, we wish to thank members of the public for helping to achieve an incident-free holiday period.

Please remember to use your train brain and always give way to cane trains. A fully loaded cane train can take up to one kilometre to stop

WhitPro and Josh

Water is at the heart of our daily lives and a good water supply is of paramount importance here in tropical Queensland, especially as we move into dry months of October and November.

No-one knows this more, than the friendly team at WhitPro, the Garden Maintenance and Landscaping Specialists who deal with water for a living.

Whether supplying or installing a range of efficient irrigation systems, keeping your landscaped gardens well-watered and maintained, or refilling your water tanks, these guys know how to work and manage water.

Offering one of the largest water delivery trucks in the region, WhitPro can deliver up to 15,000 litres of water to easy access properties or 10,000 litres to any property. Always on-hand to help, WhitPro regularly receives calls when a water tank is out of juice and always do their best to deliver water as soon as possible, to get you household running normally again.

Resident truck driver and machine operator, Josh Randell, says he loves getting a water supply operating again.

“Sometimes we get a call out from people who didn’t realise they’d let the water run out,” he said.

“The kids are getting home from school

and they’re desperate – we’re often able to get over there within a couple of hours and get their water flowing again.

“It’s a good feeling and people are always really appreciative.”

Josh is originally from Adelaide and moved to the region with his partner this year.

He has a lot of experience driving trucks and spent some time driving triple road trains through the dessert for three months at a time.

Prior to this he spent 16 years making wine in McLaren Vale in South Australia. He started in the cellar at just 17 and progressed to overseeing every stage of production from grapes through to fermenting and filtering.

Now using his skills to assist with a different kind of hydrating liquid, Josh loves delivering water and working with other important truck jobs here in the Whitsundays.

The diversity of his everyday duties always keeps him motivated – whether he is driving trucks to pick up rock from the quarry or out in the community building a retainer wall with the bob cat – he always enjoys a challenge.

If you see Josh out and about, make sure you say hi.

Police Address Crime Safety

Police gave an address on state-ofthe-art crime prevention for business and residents at the September monthly meeting of Bowen Chamber of Commerce.

Sgt Nigel Dalton, backed by Sgt Stephen Smith, both from Mackay District Crime Prevention Unit, and Sgt Michelle O’Regan of Bowen Police, addressed about 20 people at Bowen’s Larrikin Hotel.

Chamber president Bruce Hedditch, who welcomed the police delegation, noted that “crime seems to be getting worse; unless we have the right advice, it is a very difficult problem to reduce.”

Sgt Dalton said crime anxiety was being fanned by social and other media, making the problem seem constant and unrelenting. “The media can make you feel unsafe even in your own community,” he said.

Sgt Dalton said Australia was still the 27th safest country in the world to live in and he urged people not to become caught up in crime anxiety, even if the country had slipped in the crime ratings.

He said domestic violence against women was one of the most dangerous crime scenarios to be faced, although men were by no means free from the risk of assault.

He also said police had for some years now

embarked on an “assault-free zone” campaign for schools, pubs, hospitals, schoolies and other events, with effectiveness.

“There is not enough time in the day to handle reports at the counter anymore,” said Sgt Dalton.

“We don’t want to have a police officer sitting in an office rather than being on the beat.”

“Try not to be fearful of this process,” Sgt Dalton said.

He said the Facebook page was constantly monitored. “We are doing as much as we can to stay in touch.”

Sgt Dalton also added that the use of cameras for evidence gathering was gaining momentum.

He talked about the Community Camera Alliance that was created in 2014 after some high-profile murders of women, and which drew on the new boom in popularity of CCTV cameras.

“We are appealing to anyone here tonight who have CCTV in their homes to get their cameras registered with us,” he said. Having linked cameras that could track crime suspects “was a turning point” for police, he said.

While there were community concerns about the community-wide use of these cameras, these could be addressed by proper siting so CCTV did not violate the privacy of neighbours, Sgt Smith said.

Sgt Dalton had a word of advice for those who preferred to take control of a potentially violent situation by themselves: “Don’t”.

“You can physically defend yourself but the law does not allow you to carry offensive weapons,” he said.

Sgt O’Regan said that from every 50,000 young offenders in the state, probably less than 60 were a “crime core” who created crime “hot spots’.

Sgt Dalton said the myPolice Mackay/

Whitsunday website mapped these hot spots and could alleviate anxiety about crime.

He said crime should be considered as a triangle with the sides being labelled crime, target, and opportunity, and anyone intent on not becoming a victim should be aware that “if you can remove one of the sides of the triangle, you can break the crime cycle”.

The police message emphasises core personal safety strategies dealing with confrontation, situational safety strategies and safety in the home; online; out and about, on public transport; in the car; for children; seniors; the workplace; the social scene; and in helping others.

Miracle at Shady Beach

However, in our museum newsletter in June 1998, Lena Volpi (nee Zulian) shared this story of a miracle she witnessed there in the late 1920s. Lena’s parents, Margherita (Rita) and Pietro (Peter) Zulian, farmed at Glen Isla. They and a few other Italian families used to call a certain spot on the Proserpine River by the name Shady Beach. This is her story: Situated on the Mt Julian side of the river where Craig McDonald now farms on land that was once Donadelli’s farm, there was a group of large trees which formed a round leafy glade. Fallen dry leaves covered the ground during summer, just perfect for picnics. The women would lay

Novels For A Good Cause

The Zonta Club of the Whitsundays have done it again, hand delivering 22 new books for the Cannonvale Library.

Primarily penned by female authors, depicting women’s lives, the new books joined the dedicated Zonta Club of the Whitsundays section, which is proving to be a popular section amongst browsers.

“We have something from a lot of different genres, all mostly women authors, and mostly stories about women.

“Sometimes we have self-help, this time we have two cookbooks, but it’s mainly fiction about women and girls,” explained Janice Lake, Zonta Club of the Whitsundays Secretary.

Selecting a variety of genres for all levels of readers, the Zonta ladies are expanding the library’s selection of female au-

their blankets and tablecloths with plenty of food and the men would boil the billy and brew coffee. Off to one side, hidden away to the left, was a small gully used by the women to change into their bathers. The entrance to this leafy spot was covered with clean white sand heading down to the water’s edge and because of the abundance of shade was called Shady Beach. The Zulian farm was on the opposite side of the river not far from the beach. One hot summer’s Sunday something quite traumatic happened. Lena’s mother, Rita, a devout Catholic, had invited the Parish Priest, parishioners and the Sisters (nuns) to the farm.

thors and stories.

“It’s a bit of a mix and match, but there is always something for everyone.”

Purchasing the books using fundraising efforts throughout the year, Zonta has been donating these books for three years for the Cannonvale Library stacks.

Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Julie Hall thanked the Zonta Club of Whitsundays for donating a collection of new books to Cannonvale library.

“Their recent book donation to the Library is just one of the many ways Zonta is making a meaningful difference locally,” she said.

“By providing books and resources to the library, they are contributing to the enrichment of our community, making knowledge more accessible, and encouraging a love for reading among all ages,”

The Sisters slipped quietly down to the river for a swim and Lena was told to show them their little spot and the gully where they could change for a swim. One Sister went first, changed and disappeared for a swim. Lena and the other Sister kept guard over the first Sister’s habit. Lena recalled that the Sister with her seemed very nervous and angry when from the river came the cries, “Help! Help! Sister, help!” With that, the first Sister dashed away leaving behind a confused Lena.

Lena vividly remembered watching Sister floating face down, black bathers and white skull cap drifting like a small branch. She recalled how the current was carrying her gently all the way to the entrance of their leafy glade and to the white sand. The next thing she could remember was people running, yelling, crying and splashing across the river, led by the Parish Priest. Everyone followed and gathered around as they lay the lifeless Sister on the leafy ground and the priest immediately began resuscitation. He applied cardio pulmonary massage, rolled her from one side to the other, her head lolling around, her face as white as snow. Everyone was silent.

After what seemed like an eternity, Sister began to vomit, her body expelling all the water she had taken into her lungs.

The adults cried out, “Sister’s alive! Sister’s alive!” Tears of joy flowed and the sense of gratitude to the “Almighty” for delivering sister to the Shady Beach and not having washed her further downstream was shared by all present.

Lena admitted that, being very young at the time, she did not fully appreciate what had happened and just how long Sister was submerged however she believed it would have been quite a while.

Many years later, she returned to Proserpine and Carlos Demartini (1907 – 2004) took Lena and her family to see the old spot - but it had all changed. She reflected that with the passing of time many things do change but that time does not dim one’s brightest memories – such as her memory of the miracle at Shady Beach.

NO CROONING AT THIS CROONING SHOW

Flipping criticism on its head, the classic crooners of the 30s are back, ready to fuel the Airlie Beach Hotel with classic hits and standout tunes.

Leading the charge is fantastic musician and vocalist Rhydian Lewis, Australia’s premier performer and tribute artist, who puts the class back into classics.

“In this brand new show, I have combined the very best crooner legends into one performance,” Rhydian explained.

Rhydian has been on the scene for over 13 years now, but the Crooner Legends show is special for Airlie Beach.

“I have been crooning for years now, with this show a co-creation between myself and Airlie Beach Hotel.”

With him, Rhydian brings the top shelf musicians of The Residuals.

There is Mick Lagain on keys, who’s “a bit of a genius, if I do say so myself”.

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like A Bublé Boom

And Steve Francis on the drums.

“He is one of the most sought after live and studio drummers in Australia. He is standout, one of the best.”

And finally, Phil Jack on double bass, who brings charisma and class behind the smooth tempo of his bass.

“We can’t forget about myself, the vocals, and obliviously the weakest link of the bunch,” Rhydian laughed.

Now, what to expect from this show?

“This is a never-ending encore; it’s the songs you play at the end of the night.

“The perfect songs to watch the world go by.”

Now, here are your Sunday plans, filled with the impeccable vocals of Michael Bublé leading us out of the weekend.

In its 14th year, Rhydian Lewis and his band, The Residuals, have perfected the art of timeless and senseless tunes of Bublé.

Being sure to don the perfect tuxedo for the event, Rhydian looks the part, despite his own laughs.

“The tuxedo makes me look more like Bond than Bublé,” he laughed.

“But it sets the best expectations, and it raises the bar of the show, with a sharp suit, spotlessly polished shoes, and a crisp white shirt.

“I feel lost without it now if I don’t wear it on stage.

This performance will cover each and every single hit, from ‘The Way You Look Tonight’, ‘Everything’, ‘Save The Last Dance For Me’ to ‘Feeling Good’.

Rhydian explains that Australia holds a

special significance for Bublé.

“We gave him his first number one hit, so there’s a special love affair between Bublé and music lovers everywhere.”

Opening up the Airlie Beach Hotel dance floor, Rhydian is expecting everyone to bring their best dance moves.

“It’s a bit of a strategic move at the Airlie Beach Hotel, but we want everyone to shake their bits, and get dancing.” For Rhydian, he is eager to get back to Airlie Beach and bring the romantic classics to life.

“This is some of the best music ever written, and this performance is one of the best celebrations of it.”

Exotic Offerings In Airlie Beach Backyard Garden

The hidden alcove of Whitsunday Food Garden is amping-up the good food and great energy, with Ismi’s Kitchen Food Truck, serving the very best and most authentic Indonesian dishes.

Ismi’s Kitchen is the passion project for Ismi Small, bringing all her homestyle Indonesian recipes to Airlie Beach.

“I just love cooking,” Ismi explained.

“My husband says that my food is amazing, so we thought, ‘how about we open a food truck?’

“Since then, it has been amazing, and it’s got busier and busier.”

The entire menu and offerings have been handpicked and curated by Ismi, who keeps her recipes close to her, each ingredient is top secret and every dish is absolutely delicious.

Her magic book of recipes has pushed the venture into massive success, with Ismi able to take a step back from cooking, and now overseeing the kitchen.

“Come to recipe, I believe every hand will create something different, and I am happy if people like what I cook!” Ismi said.

“Our recipes allow us to be consistent and delivering quality meals.”

Since coming into the atmospheric Whitsunday Food Garden, who operate under the Whisper Gin Bar and Restaurant umbrella, Ismi and her team have welcomed the new clientele, who love the tranquil seclusion of the food garden.

“The food garden is a beautiful spot,” Zibby Deca, Chef of Whisper Gin Bar and Restaurant explained.

“We have recently opened the other side of the garden, so people can face the water at night and take in the view.

“With the fairy lights on, under the stars, in a beautiful spot.

“Everyone can grab a meal from one of the three food trucks in the garden and just enjoy a peaceful night with the spectacular views.”

Of the offerings at the Food Garden, there is definitely something for everyone.

“We always wanted to make sure the trucks complement each other,” Zibby explained.

“There is something for everyone, whether it’s gourmet Indonesian, classic Aussie burgers, or a sweet or savoury waffle.”

For Ismi, the venture has been incredibly successful.

“We try and educate the general public of Indonesian food, because it actually is both dairy and gluten free, perfect for everyone.

“Indonesian is such a healthy diet. Not only is it very tasty, but it’s a great choice for most dietary restrictions.”

And what does Ismi recommend from her fantastic menu?

“The chicken Maryland is my favourite.

“We have had a lot of people try this dish

and come back for seconds.

“It is a grilled chicken with an exotic sauce, which is delicious, and everyone loves.”

Whether a seasoned Whitsunday Food Garden lover, or new to town, check out the Whitsunday Food Garden.

“I am so happy to be growing and have a good team in the Whisper kitchen and the Food Garden, I thank them all,” said Ismi. Open seven days a week, for lunch and dinner, available for private functions, with Thursdays hosting the Night Markets and live music, making this the place to be.

High Speed Racing Big Wins For Local Racer

Year 12 Bowen State High School student Henry Snell is making big movements in the world of high speed motorsport, taking to the track across Australia to compete.

Starting on the dirt tracks when he was seven, it wasn’t until Henry was 13 that the paved circuit caught his eye.

Taking on the Oceania Junior Competition then, Henry has never looked back, taking each and every track opportunity in his stride.

However, it wasn’t until recently that Henry moved up the gears and decided to give the sport a proper crack, giving it his all in hopes to make the big leagues.

Now, with the 2023 season close to finishing up, he has welcomed numerous podium finishes, and even a first place win at Philip Island a few weeks ago, securing a top five place in his category.

“That was a big competition,” Henry explained.

“I ended up winning the 300 class and came second in the 200. We did have a bit of unluckiness with one of the races because I had a malfunction on my bike, but I came back and won the last race of the day.”

Henry’s dad, Rodger, is Henry’s right-hand man on the track, always making sure Henry has the best supports and the best outcome.

Bait And Lure Night With Whitsunday Game Fish Club

FISHING

“The finishes can be pretty tight, and exciting. Henry is one of the top five in Australia, with all the boys finishing at similar speeds, all within not even half a second of each other.”

Now on the cusp of completing Year 12, Henry is looking to compete professionally internationally, hoping to secure a place at an academy or program to learn the ropes.

Henry is backed by a team of sponsors, most of which are Bowen locals.

“I wish to thank all my sponsors, because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”

The Whitsunday Game Fish Club is holding a Bait and Lure rigging night on Friday, 13 October from 6pm at the Marine Club in Altmann Avenue, Cannonvale. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Club members will be demonstrating various methods of rigging a range of baits and lures to tempt fish, such as Spanish Mackerel, Sailfish, Tuna, Black Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo etc. They will also explain the better areas and stages of the tide to find them in Whitsunday waters.

Once that ‘fish of a lifetime’ is on your line, boat handling plays a big part in ensuring a quick, safe opportunity to capture or tag and release it. A few very helpful hints will be shared that may

come in handy.

This should be a very informative evening, especially for those male, female, and junior anglers, vying for the wide range of prizes on offer in this year’s Ben Doolin Builders Whitsunday Light Tackle Tournament, being held from 19 - 22 October.

This fun tournament is contested using 10kg monofilament line only and is open to all Club Members and anglers affiliated with GFAA. Anyone wishing to join the Whitsunday Game Fish Club can do so on Friday, 13th October and tournament nominations close at 9pm that evening.

This is a great event, so organise your team and be part of it. Contributed with thanks to Ashley Moore.

The BOXING ELVIS In Bowen

BOXING

Achance recommendation has changed the entire trajectory of Daniel Dowson’s life.

Better known as Elvis, Daniel was born with Down Syndrome and it was four years ago, when he was in his early thirties, that he was recommended to start boxing with Wes Bau Personal Training, in Bowen.

“He had no confidence when he first started,” Wes explained.

“It was hard to get a punch from him, and he had absolutely no enthusiasm in the ring.

“But his mum was consistent and encour-

With boxing, his health has improved so much, in all aspects

aging him to keep going and to keep training.”

Elvis’s mum Joy was quick to see the results from the training.

“His confidence just grew,” Joy said.

“When he first started, Elvis had such low muscle tone. He couldn’t even stand on one leg.

“Now he can do that, no problem!”

Beginning with low muscle tone, balance and coordination, Elvis has continued to make strides in his fitness, seeing Wes twice a week to keep up with his training.

While having a form of consistent exercise was the main goal for Elvis and Joy, Wes’

Elvis

training has culminated into one powerful mix.

“Over time, he just perked up, and all the hard work and training came together,” Wes said.

“And most importantly, his health has massively improved.”

However, Joy says that Elvis has improved in all aspects of his life.

“He is one happy boy. Wes has become a brother to him, and he has grown so much.”

Due to Wes’ training, Elvis’ health has improved leaps and bounds.

“His paediatrician and cardiologist were

amazed at his health,” Wes said.

“His cardiovascular system has greatly improved, and all his doctors recommend he continue boxing.”

While continuing his training with Wes, Elvis is keeping busy, a regular face around Bowen and the wider Whitsundays.

“And don’t call him Daniel, he only goes by Elvis,” his mum explained.

“He’s currently taking cooking classes in Mackay, and his support staff have him out and about.

“He does his own thing, but its great to see his growth.”

MASSIVE WEEKEND OF FANTASTIC PLAYS

RUGBY UNION

Over 200 keen rugby union players surged into the Whitsunday Sportspark last weekend, for the coveted Viking Cup.

The annual rugby union carnival saw hundreds of players, aged from 5 to 16, with their families, from all across the state, for a massive weekend of sport.

President of Whitsunday Junior Rugby Union, Tim Oberg, said “Our Committee

made some small but significant changes to the Viking Cup this year such as reverting to the original 10s format, bringing it forward into the school holidays to encourage teams from outside our region to attend and moving our canteen into the stunning new Club House.

“All of these changes were validated with record attendances, much more efficient food and drink service and some absolutely wonderful Rugby being played by so many little legends.”

U14 and U16 trophies were won by boys Nogoa Red Claws.

Head Coach of the Whitsundays Raiders Girls teams, Nathan Sainbury, said “It is fantastic to see the growth of the game for women and girls. “The Central Highlands Titans continue to produce excellent Rugby players and the development we have

seen from Bowen in a short time is incredibly encouraging,” he said.

“The pathway to professional Rugby is growing for the girls and it is exciting to see former Raider, Seraphina Dufil, playing for the Queensland Country Orchids over the past week, as well as multiple girls from the Mackay District representing Central Queensland in 7s and the junior Orchids. 2024 is going to be another exciting year for girls Rugby Union in the Whitsundays!”

Airlie Beach Boardwalk - Stage 2 Closure

Council is undertaking works on the Airlie Beach Boardwalk Stage 2, resulting in a closure of the Boardwalk between the VMR Boat Ramp and Shingley Drive from 11 September to early December 2023 (approx. 13 weeks, subject to weather).

During the closure a detour will be available behind Mirage Whitsundays Apartments, via Altmann Avenue and Shingley Drive.

Proposed works include:

Expand the width of the boardwalk by approximately 1m, increasing capacity for users and helping to mitigate conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists/scooters.

· Replace timber with a composite fibre material, to extend asset life and significantly reduce maintenance costs for ratepayers.

Works will involve demolition of the Boardwalk, with hardwood timber to be retained for future projects. Footings will be retained but all timber will be replaced.

We apologise for the inconvenience of the necessary works and will endeavour to minimise impacts on the community where possible. We encourage you to keep up to date on construction progress via our Your Say Whitsunday project page - yoursay.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au.

Works are supported by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grant.

Airlie Beach Main Street Pedestrian Crossing Survey

Whitsunday Regional Council would like to seek thoughts and feedback from residents concerning the implementation of higher pedestrian priority in Airlie Beach Main Street.

Council invites residents to have their say via our online engagement portal yoursay.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au.to let us know how many pedestrian crossings you believe there should be along Main Street and where they should be located.

Further information and fact sheets can be found on the Your Say Whitsunday project page via the portal address above.

Choose Collinsville – Town Centre Upgrade Updates

Last week Council completed final planting out of all garden beds and cleaning footpaths. The next steps will be the road asphalting, resealing and line marking works as below:

Re-sealing (in stages)– Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 October

Line marking and intersection street print - Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 October (TBC)

Due to the need to spray seal around garden beds, traffic control may also appear in shorter sections as required.

We apologise for the temporary inconvenience of the works and will manage impacts with local residents and businesses.

We encourage you to keep up to date on construction progress via our Online Engagement Portal - yoursay.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au and Council’s Facebook page.

Works are supported by the Australian Governments Building Better Regions Fund.

Scottville Road Temporary Closures

Council’s Works Department has commenced the realignment of Scottville Road.

Works are being completed under traffic management to minimise the disruptions to road users and residents.

In order to complete the final stages of work we are required to close Scottville Road at the intersection with Stanley Street and Railway Road between Monday 09th October to Friday 27th October 2023 inclusive.

This closure is for the installation of a slab link culvert and

associated pavement reconstruction.

To ensure the safety of work crews and other road users, a detour will be in place for the duration of the works via Corduroy Creek Road and Ninth Avenue.

Whilst we endeavour to keep disruptions to a minimum, we regret that traffic delays may occur during this road closures. We apologise for any inconvenience and seek your cooperation during this important upgrade.
