Parents came forward in outrage last week as the content of a sex-ed video shown at a local high school was revealed to contain a cultural comparison that they believe sanctions paedophilia.
The incident gained traction when a teacher also allegedly came forward to claim they had been instructed to ask their class to draw lewd pictures and had to “endure completely inappropriate commentary” from teenage students.

FIND A BUS A HOME
Hi Everyone,
This week I would like to talk about the power of words and reading to create change in our community.
For the past few weeks, my mum has been visiting my son’s school and reading with his class.
She takes each individual student and spends about 10 minutes helping them to read, talking about the books and encouraging them to fall in love the written word.
Of course, like many other retirees, she would rather be sitting in a café, drinking coffee, happily immersed in a good book.
But as is typical with my mum (and the reason I love her so much), she puts the children first and the community first, spending her time patiently waiting for each stilted word to emerge from a six-yearold’s mouth instead.
What a legend!
In this week’s edition of the paper, we cover three stories that also illustrate the power of words and reading.
On page 10 we celebrate the win of a group of local dog-owners who successfully campaigned for an off-leash dog zone at Boathaven Beach.
Editor’s Note
We covered their plight in the paper a couple of weeks ago and it was very rewarding to think the newspaper played a small part in helping create change for them.
On page 6, we share Dr Melissa McCann’s powerful words as she brings awareness to people suffering from alleged adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines.
It’s amazing to think that a Whitsundays-based doctor is leading the charge on a nationally significant Class Action lawsuit.
Finally, the most controversial ‘word related’ article this week is of course our front page and the shocking revelations about the content of a sex-ed video that has been shown at a local school.
The full story can be read on page 3.
Words can be used to draw attention, raise awareness, and help others – hopefully these stories open your mind and show you how much power you have if you speak up.

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen” (Winston Churchill)
When a family of five arrived in the Whitsundays to settle down after three years home-schooling and travelling around the country, they did not expect to be part of our latest Good Deed story.
Lex Davis drove his 42-foot bus into a Proserpine Caravan Park last weekend and unfortunately the length of the family vehicle had not been added to the booking.
“It was no-one’s fault,” he said. “They had changed managers and I know them both really well, they are lovely people, it was just an accident.”
With no sites able to accommodate such a long vehicle the family were left without the amenities and community they had been looking forward to enjoying.
The caravan park allowed them to use the non-camping area for one night and recommended they ask for help on
social media.
Lex wrote a post on the community chat page and was instantly overwhelmed by the response.
“It blew me out of the water!” he said.
“We had over 80 replies of people offering their backyard and saying we could stay as long as we needed.
“When we visited last time, the community here were the same – so welcoming – and this is the reason we decided to come back and settle down here.”
Ironically Lex has since had an issue with his gear box and has been unable to move the bus while it is undergoing repairs. He says, however, that he is still receiving messages and is grateful for every single person who has reached out to help. “It’s humbling – everyone was extraordinarily kind, and we are totally overwhelmed.”

Is This Age Appropriate Sex-Ed?
Concerned mum Kristy Hodder said she received five phone calls from other parents following her social media post which vented her anger at what she alleges is overly graphic and inappropriate sexual references in sex-ed classes of Year 8 and 9 students.
Ms Hodder alleges that her Year 8 daughter returned home and told her that “we have a choice to be what sex we want” and “it is okay to not want to be the sex you are.”
While she recognises the right of people to choose their gender, Ms Hodder believes that her daughter, at just 13 years old, is too young and impressionable to be exposed to that information. Especially, when they had not previously raised the question independently.
She believes it could prompt or plant the seed and create more gender confusion.
Dissatisfied with the subject matter, Ms Hodder spoke to other parents, and it was soon revealed that similar experiences had allegedly occurred with the Year 9 cohort. Crash Course, a YouTube channel that is largely trusted and widely used across many schools in the country, released a
video called Sex and Sexuality.
It was played at the local school and contained content that, Ms Hodder says promotes paedophilia.
The section in question denotes that it is okay for young boys to give sexual favours to older men and reads as follows:
“For example, among the Sambia of the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea young boys perform oral sex on, and ingest the semen of, older men as part of a rite of passage to adulthood.”
While the statement is true, the question remains whether its inclusion in this context is an age-appropriate example to use when educating 13-year-old students about sex.
Allegedly, a letter by an unknown author has been sent to the school, detailing concerns and outlining further situations within the school.
An excerpt from the alleged letter which reads as if it was sent to the school principal says:
“I was completely revolted and angry. This curriculum item is condoning and promoting paedophilia. Paedophilia is illegal
in this country. We all know the devastating and terrible effects of this scourge on young people.”
Further into the YouTube video, the commentary suggests that incest is only wrong because society has evolved to support the traditional family network and that it would be “confusing” if your dad was also your brother.
A spokesperson from the Department of Education said that they were aware of a letter circulating online around a health and physical education lesson that was delivered to one class.
“The lesson contained a video presentation regarding gender biology and gender expression, which was not endorsed by the department,” said the spokesperson.
“The school leadership team has confirmed that this video will not be used in future lessons.”
The alleged letter also detailed a separate instance where a male teacher allegedly expressed his astonishment that he had to instruct Year 9 Health boy students to “draw on a piece of paper with a pencil their ideal sex partner.”
In Ms Hodder’s opinion, this would not
only objectify the opposite sex, but also put anyone who was confused about their sexual preferences into a difficult, potentially embarrassing situation.
The Department of Education confirmed the letter contained a number of other statements but stated these were all “incorrect”.
Ms Hodder said she wishes there was more transparency around the content of sex education given at schools.
“I think parents need to be fully informed,” she said.
“And not just see the outline of the content but also have the opportunity to see the videos before they are shown – I think parents need to be able to sign-off to say they are happy for their kids to watch it.”
The Department of Education concluded their statement by advising any other concerned parents to contact their school directly.

Local Doctor Launches Class Action Against Adverse Effects Of COVID Vaccine
AWhitsunday doctor is taking the lead on fighting for the rights of people who have suffered loss and damage as a result of being injected with one or more of the COVID-19 vaccines.
Dr Melissa McCann is launching a nation-wide Class Action lawsuit to fight what she believes to be a failing government compensation scheme and unsafe vaccine.
For the past 10 years Dr McCann has practiced as a GP in the Whitsundays and she now chooses not to administer COVID vaccinations since witnessing first hand serious adverse events after these vaccines; and also following the introduction of mandates which she believes interfere with informed consent and medical ethics. Since the vaccination became available, Dr McCann has witnessed an unusually large amount of patients presenting with adverse effects such as chest pain, blood clots, miscarriages and strokes shortly after receiving a COVID vaccination. Deciding to speak up and take the matter to the government, Dr McCann wrote a series of letters to Dr Brendan Murphy, Department of Health and Aged Care Secretary, and the Former Deputy Secretary of Health Products Regulation Group Adjunct Professor John Skerritt.
“I asked them to cease the program and
review safety issues,” she explained.
“But I was told the ‘events were coincidental’ and that a certain amount of adverse effects were expected with the widespread rollout of a new vaccine.”
Dissatisfied with the response, Dr McCann began speaking to other doctors around the country and discovered that they had also witnessed a disproportionate amount of patients presenting with adverse effects.
“It’s difficult for doctors to talk openly about this,” said Dr McCann.
“Many are very afraid to speak up.”
Despite this, Dr McCann managed to gather 14 signatures from other GPs, specialists, and Emergency Department doctors from all around Australia, who all supported her claim.
She sent another letter, and in April received another dismissive response.
This prompted her to start legal action.
“At this point I felt it would require legal action for something to change,” said Dr McCann.
She later began speaking publicly about her concerns and gained both momentum and support.
“We need every GP and every doctor to feel comfortable talking about this,” she explains.
“When I spoke at one event, I had people walking up to me with their teenagers, one showing the scars from their implantable defibrillator, they were really grateful for what I was doing.”
“It is really unfortunate that this has become a pro versus anti issue – we are talking about adverse effects from pharmaceutical products like any other prescription product – and I don’t understand why this needs to be so divisive, we all want there to be a good vaccine.”
“There are enough intelligent people working on this to find a better one.”
Last month Dr McCann sought the services of a lawyer and began filing a Class Action to support individuals who have allegedly experienced adverse effects and have been unable to access the compensation they deserve.
Dr McCann claims there are at least 100,000 people listed on the TGA website claiming they have experienced adverse effects but many of the most common symptoms are not included on the claims form.
“The Services Australia COVID Vaccine Claims Scheme is not fit for purpose,” she said.
“Australians were promised a fair and accessible compensation scheme.
“Many vaccine-injured Australians who cannot access compensation through the
Services Australia scheme now find themselves abandoned, with no support.”
Dr McCann has initiated crowdfunding and provided litigation funding for the action and filed a Class Action lawsuit on behalf of Lead Applicants Gareth O’Gradie, Antonio Derose and Anthony Rose.
The action relates to the conduct of the Therapeutic Goods Administration in approving and monitoring the COVID-19 vaccines, including alleged negligence, breach of statutory duty and misfeasance in public office.
The relevant respondents are (at least) the Australian Government, the Department of Health and Aged Care Secretary Dr Brendan Murphy and the Former Deputy Secretary of Health Products Regulation Group Adjunct Professor John Skerritt.
“Australians who have experienced a serious adverse event following COVID-19 vaccination are invited to step forward and register for this Class Action,” said Natalie Strijland, instructing solicitor NR Barbi Solicitor Pty Ltd.
The Class Action was filed last week and is now open for additional claimants to come forward and join.

UNPAID RATES RESULT IN COUNCIL AUCTIONS
Atotal of 13 properties belonging to individuals who had not paid their rates were auctioned by the Whitsunday Regional Council last Friday.
The properties in question were a mixture of private dwellings and vacant land.
A Council spokesperson said that arrears needed to “be at least three years for dwellings” and “12 months for vacant land or commercial properties”.
“The process to auction properties only eventuates after every measure has been taken to help the ratepayers clear their outstanding debt,” said the spokesperson.
“Correspondence and conversations take place during the six months up to the auction date.
“Council works closely with the impacted ratepayers prior to this action being taken assisting to facilitate payment arrangements before it reaches the auction listing.”
Once a property reaches the auction listing, Council officers again work with the ratepayer and provide all relevant information on other authorities that may be
able to offer financial support or advice if they cannot source payment.
This is the first time in several years that Council has proceeded with the Intention to Sell process, opting not to pursue this during the pandemic-affected years in order to provide some reprieve to an already struggling community.
This year, however, Council decided it was time to reinstate the process.
“It is important for Council to undergo the Intention to Sell process in order to ensure that outstanding rates arrears aren’t increasing which puts a burden on all other ratepayers who pay their rates on time,” said the spokesperson.
Outstanding rates will be “recovered from the sale proceeds” if a property sells.
The Local Government Act 2009 and Local Government Regulations 2012 states that Council does not need to ensure the property is vacant during this process.
There was one signed contract agreement entered into at the auction held on Friday, April 28.
Cut Out Party Raises $38,000
In a mammoth effort, the Cut Out Party in Proserpine has donated $38,000 to RACQ CQ Rescue.
The annual Cut Out Party, which was held in March, celebrates the sugar industry and raises funds for a vital charity in the region each year.
Organising committee member, Amanda Hadlow, said that the event attracted about 250 attendees from across the region.
“The event was an opportunity for the community to come along, share a meal and a few drinks and have a catch up with everyone in the industry whilst reflecting on the last 125 years of sugar in our community,” Amanda said.
The event took 10 months of tireless planning, and was postponed twice, before taking place earlier this year.
The committee is proud to have raised the massive amount for a worthy charity.
“If these funds save one life, it will be worth it,” Amanda said.
“RACQ CQ Rescue does incredible work, day in and day out, and we often see it flying overhead.
We are incredibly proud to play our part and support this community and a lifesaving service which we all hope to never have to use,” she said.
The event included a charity auction, overseen by Robert Murolo from Elders Rural Mackay, and comprised a series of prize donations from attendees, local companies, businesses and organisations, and sponsors.
“We are lucky to live in such a great community. Small towns are just great and incredibly generous too,” Amanda said. “We could not have achieved this result without the support of so many businesses associated with the sugar industry, the farmers, harvesters and milling sector.”
RACQ CQ Rescue CEO Tim Healee said, “It is reassuring to know local people and industry see the value of donating and supporting our helicopter that is so vital in a time of crisis.”
“We are incredibly fortunate to receive such sweet support and donations like this are an enormous help to ensuring help is available to anyone, anywhere, anytime, throughout Central Queensland.”

New Leash-Free Dog Zone At Boathaven Beach
Agroup of passionate dog-owners, who meet at Boathaven Beach each morning, are celebrating as their appeal for a leash-free zone has been granted by Council.
Just two weeks ago, the group had been warned by inspectors that a fine of $287 would be imposed for any dogs found without a lead or swimming within the stinger net.
AT THE
Previously they had been enjoying good company and leash free time at the beach without realising it was forbidden. Deciding to fight for their rights, the group contacted this paper to gain exposure and then several individuals wrote personal letters to Council.
They also spoke directly to Councillor Jan Clifford who jumped up to support their cause.
OFF-LEASH DOG WALKING ZONES:
“Jan was fantastic!” said group member, Norma Strang.
“She entered a Point of Notice for us and stood up in the Council meeting.”
During the meeting Ms Clifford asked Council for a six-month trial permitting a designated off-leash dog walking and swimming area at Boathaven Beach.
Following a lengthy discussion, it was decided to reduce the term to three months instead of six.
Five out of seven Councillors voted to approve the motion.
This means Airlie Beach centre has its first off-leash on-beach designated dog area, and the group are thrilled that their morning ritual can continue.
“We are absolutely over the moon!” said Norma.
“I hadn’t been going to the beach like I normally would because I just didn’t want the confrontation.
“The decision to give us a trial really takes the pressure off – we don’t have to worry any more – even the inspectors said they were happy too!
“The next question I have for Council ishow is the trial going to be assessed? What do we have to do to get the trial period approved and for it to become permanent?”
Norma is also worried about the behaviour of other dog-owners and hopes that everyone respects the beach.

For now, the group are thrilled with their reprieve and happy not to be “looking over our shoulders” for the next three months.
The three-month trial allows dogs to roam free and swim outside the stinger net at Boathaven Beach between 5.30am and 8.30am every morning.

Well, what a whirlwind of activity around the region this month!
Firstly, I’d like to extend a huge congratulations to the team at the Whitsunday Coast Airport who not only smashed all records for passenger traffic through our fabulous airport this month, but also opened a new Freight Distribution Hub which will ensure our great produce reaches the markets in a very timely manner whether it be live mud crabs or mangoes.
Easter and the school holidays brought visitors from all corners of the world to the town of Airlie Beach. Everyone I spoke to had experienced a most enjoyable time in the laid-back atmosphere that is so integral to who we are and how we do it.
Anzac Day of course was observed across the region with huge crowds attending all services. Thank you to all of you who showed up to honour those who endured great sacrifice to protect our home nation.
This year’s Anzac Day was particularly significant for me as the wreckage of the Montevideo Maru was recently located deep in the ocean off the Philippines. My uncle, Milton Dowd, was a prisoner of war aboard this Japanese ship when it was sunk by an American submarine. The ship carried no markings that would have indi-
word on the street
What has been your experience with the current housing crisis?
cated to the submarine that it was carrying allied prisoners and wounded soldiers. This is just one example of the sadness and loss that these wars inflicted upon our servicemen and women.
At last week’s council meeting I put forward a Notice of Motion for the introduction of a six-month trial of an Off Leash Area on Boathaven/New Beach from 5.30am until 8.30am, excluding the Stinger Net and the area around it. Council approved a three-month trial which should not interfere with beachgoers; I hope the trial is a success.
Work has commenced on the upgrading of the Boardwalk from Sorrento’s to Coral Sea Resort, so please follow the signage to use alternate pathways; thank you for your patience.
And finally, we continue to enjoy visiting Cruise Ships and welcome their passengers and crews to the region.
Jan.
Whitsunday Regional Council has two free RV-friendly campgrounds to welcome travellers to the region!
Situated in Collinsville at the Collinsville Showgrounds and in Main Street Proserpine, these campgrounds make the perfect rest stop for travellers passing through the region.
No bookings are required, however space is limited and visitors must abide by the maximum length of stay.
The Collinsville RV Park has fresh water and on-site toilets, whist the Proserpine RV Park is open to self-contained vehicles only.
These parks offer a safe resting place for over 4000 visitors each a year!
To find out more, visit the Camping, Tourist Parks and RV parks section on our website.
Since the pandemic, the cost of rent has just skyrocketed. And we’re forced to pay because there’s no other option. And the actual application process is ridiculous. There are so many applications for houses, and people are offering more rent than advertised to get the place. Rent going from $350 to $500 in a matter of two years, that’s crazy, especially when there’s no change to the property. I think we need more housing, and not be selling land to commercial developments. Units are always a good option.
The housing crisis is a big problem. I’m lucky because I haven’t had a rental increase, and no one close to me has been affected, at least they haven’t told me.
But I think we need more government housing. They haven’t built more government housing for years, but they talk about it all the time. It just doesn’t seem to be happening. I know it won’t work for everyone, but it does help.
Tahlia McNally Cannonvale
I’m 18 and still live at home. I look at the rental market all the time.
There isn’t any way to fix this. I have no idea how to fix it. My daughter and grandchild have moved in with me because they couldn’t pay their rent anymore. She’s a single mum to a teenager and it’s bad.
I have no more rooms to house people either. And the worse thing is that some people have money but no home.
I want to move out of home, but I balance working, studying and my social life. I can’t work full time because I have university. And still, share houses won’t work because the rent it too high. In Cannonvale, there was only six houses for rent, and it’s too much.
I think there needs to be a cap on housing rent, to make it affordable for people.
Patricia Alfword Airlie Beach
They’re not building enough houses and even people renovating can’t get people to finish the job. I don’t know if there’s not enough tradespeople. And interest rates keep creeping up. I worry about my daughter, because hers keeps increasing.
And it’s not going to stop.
I happen to have paid off my home, but we paid it off at 18 per cent, and paid over $3,000 in interest in three months, and only $100 off the principal.
It’s bad for our grandchildren too. They need to make it easier for first home owners to get into the market but increasing the First Home Owner Grant will only put the government into more debt!
I actually live on a yacht, have been for the past six years, so I haven’t been too affected by the housing crisis.
We’re currently refitting our boat and Airlie Beach has the best fees for that, so we have been here for 14 months, but we’re about to sail down to the Gold Coast next week. However, the housing crisis is bad. Rent just continues to increase and I believe that one problem is that 70 to 80 per cent of rental properties don’t want pets, which is so hard.
I think they need to think about the locals. Airbnbs and holidays homes are jacking up rent for the locals. It’s hard.

Where: Whitsunday PCYC Jubilee Pocket

Join us as we showcase and celebrate the diversity of the Whitsundays through cultural dance and entertainment, cooking and art demonstrations, market stall and free activities such as games, jumping castle and PCYC Little ‘n’ Active. It will also include our next Australian Citizenship ceremony!
This event is proudly funded by the Queensland Government.
“The project will provide new economic opportunities for agriculture, tourism and small business through improved market access, freight efficiencies and new business creation,” Mayor Hall said. Council’s Chief Operating Officer for Aviation and Tourism Craig Turner said the airport had already signed an agreement with Virgin Australia Cargo and further negotiations with other airline partners are underway.
“The Mayor and myself recently toured Toowoomba Wellcamp Freight Facility and discussed opportunities to link our two agricultural powerhouses, while investigating an easy link to international freight opportunities for our region. Our new freight centre means that staff handle the whole process from packaging,
AIRLIE BEACH BOARDWALK ON SCHEDULE
The Airlie Beach Boardwalk upgrade between Coral Sea Marina and Coral Sea Resort has commenced and running to schedule! Despite inclement weather, works have progressed to remove existing boardwalk timber and the replacement composite fibre material is arriving on site in preparation for installation.
Removal of all the boardwalk timber and installation of the material will commence from late this week.
The works will expand the width of the boardwalk by approximately 1m, increasing capacity for users and helping to mitigate conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists/scooters.
The composite fibre material will extend the asset life and significantly reduce maintenance costs for ratepayers. For further information, please visit yoursay.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au
MT COOLON COMMUNITY CATCH-UP
“Adding freight to our business plan was a strategic move aimed at maximising the capacity of aircraft to drive additional revenue and provide more reliable and efficient supply of fresh produce for tourism operators.”
“Importantly this provides support to local industries while driving extra revenue for the airport, which we are using to support the development of a freight distribution centre expanding our airport into a multi-service logistics hub.”
The Freight Distribution Centre was funded by as $250,000 grant from the Australian Government’s National Drought and North Queensland Flood Response and Recovery Agency with $40,000 support funding from Council.
Mayor Julie Hall and Councillors held their third community catch-up for 2023 at the Mt Coolon Community Centre last week.
Mayor Hall said the community catch ups provide Councillors the opportunity to better connect with our smaller communities, build relationships, share information, and gather feedback on local issues.
“Face to face catch ups allow us to facilitate a two-way flow of information, updating residents on Council projects relevant to them and listen to issues affecting the local community,” Mayor Hall said.
The Mt Coolon catch up attracted about 15 residents and topics discussed included land and natural resource management and the large network of rural roads and their maintenance. Upcoming catch ups are planned for Gumlu/Cape Upstart, Collinsville, Proserpine, Conway, Scottville, Bowen and Airlie Beach/Shute Harbour.

“I have this catchphrase ‘Everyone likes to Whitsundays’ because everyone here likes to go camping and fishing,” Andrew Barker, owner of AWB First Aid said.
One good thing is to have the kit, the next is to know how to use it, Andrew said.
“Which is why we offer training to go along with the kit.”
“We are now offering, once a month, a Saturday and a Monday night first aid training course, so that people who can’t make our regular times can get the training.”
The training courses offered through AWB
First Aid First encompass all aspects of health, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, general First Aid, Emergency First Aid Response in an Education and Care Setting, and even Advanced Resuscitation.
“We also educate people on health issues, such as asthma and strokes, and sell tools and products that aid those conditions.”

Was La Niña A Failure?
With the La Niña that has been forecasted for the past three wet seasons, many locals believe that we missed out. While we may have missed out locally, many parts of Australia had a successful La Niña season.
What is a La Niña? It is where the water is cooler on the southern American part of the Pacific Ocean and is warmer in the Northern Australasian parts of the Pacific Ocean. As the water evaporates, it causes rain, which causes above average rainfall throughout a season. Sometimes a lot at once which can cause flash flooding.
This is what was experienced throughout Qld, NT and Northern WA over the past three wet seasons. The southern areas of Qld near Gympie experienced floods last season which had devastating affects and cut off highways and railways to Central and North Qld.
While we did miss out from the flood-
ing affects and above average rainfall of La Niña, other parts of Australia didn’t. BoM’s La Niña warning was country wide. Not locally.
We are now moving to an El Niño phase. Which then means opposite of La Niña. Below average rainfall. Possibility of droughts, bush fires and severe thunderstorms. This is currently forecast to last for the next wet season or two.
On the bright side, Mackay and the Whitsundays can sometimes be in the best spot as we are likely to get some rain and some thunderstorms every time the wet season comes around.

When it comes to home repairs or renovation projects, many people choose to take the DIY route to save money. However, while the idea of saving some cash may sound appealing, the reality is that attempting to do it yourself can often end up costing you more in the long run.
Here are five advantages of using trades and professionals instead of trying to do it yourself:
1. Time-saving. Trades and professionals have the knowledge and experience to get the job done quickly and efficiently, leaving you with more time to focus on other things.
2. Quality workmanship. A professional’s work is guaranteed to be of high quality, and you can rest easy knowing that the job has been done right the first time.
3. Safety. Some projects require special-

ised knowledge and equipment that may be unsafe for an untrained individual to handle. Hiring a professional ensures that the job is done safely and with minimal risk.
4. Resurfacing concrete with paint. If you want to update your concrete surfaces but don’t want to replace them, consider resurfacing them with paint. This is a job best left to the professionals, as they have the knowledge and equipment to ensure a smooth, even finish that will last. Give Superior Paint a call to see how they can help you.
5. Professional cleaning of upholstery and carpets. Upholstery and carpets can harbour dirt, dust, and allergens that can impact your health. A professional cleaning service can remove these contaminants and leave your home looking and feeling fresh. Call Protect and Sanitise to see how they could help you.
Tourism business owners and anyone working within the sector are invited to attend a free workshop which will provide helpful tools and sustainable initiatives to offer a pathway towards creating low carbon tourism across the Whitsundays.
The workshop is due to take place at The Reef Gateway Hotel on Wednesday, May 10 from 2pm until 4pm.
The event is part of a larger four-year program which began by educating 37 tourism businesses on sustainable working practices back in 2022.
Since then, the Healthy Heart Project has shown these businesses how to help the environment and save money at the same time.
The latest workshop is dedicated to recruiting more tourism businesses to the program and during the event, participants will hear real life accounts from other businesses who have experienced success through adopting the key principals.
EcoBiz Sustainability Auditor Fiona Sleight will be presenting alongside Lee
Hawkins who will give a broader description of the role of the Health Heart Project in our local region.
“The rise of environmentally conscious travellers is rewarding tourism businesses that are making an effort to reduce their carbon footprint,” said Ms Hawkins, Climate Change Resilience Officer.
“More visitors are looking for eco-tourism options that have a low, or even non-existent environmental impact.”
During the afternoon, further topics will include consumer behaviour, climate change and pathways to create a Sustainable Destination Accreditation for the Whitsundays.
Attendees will also receive an online carbon calculator demonstration and afternoon tea will be provided.

Mafia Mamma
To imbue this review with the spirit of “Mafia Mamma”, I refuse to refer to the film as pastiche – instead, I dub it a “pasticcio”. Please: cue the weeping strings, the long, drawn-out horn, and “leave the gun, take the cannoli.”
Mafia Mamma is, at its purest, a fish-outof-water comedy where the fish has been dropped into a nice Napoletana Sauce; it is unabashedly inspired by every mafia trope ever from every mafia film ever (Especially “The Godfather”). There’s a premise and a promise of goofiness in that. And being directed by the talented Catherine Hardwicke – whom audiences would vaguely know from her directorship on “Twilight” – though, ever since then, she’s flitted between television and film directing; notably in “This Is Us” and “Guillermo del Tor’s Cabinet of Curiosities” – the offer to see Mafia Mamma seems to be one audience can’t refuse.
Hardwicke again directs Toni Collette, having worked with the star in 2015’s “Miss You Already” (A brilliant performance from Collette, as ever). And here, she portrays the self-effacing American

helicopter-mom Katherine, and inherits her grandfather’s mafia empire in Italy –becoming the eponymous Mafia Mamma. And she carries the film with her charm, despite an often-flailing script that seems torn between mafia motifs and Hallmark travel films. Based on a short story by French novelist Amanda Sthers, Mafia Mamma has some deft flourishes to it.
So, guided by the firm’s consigliere, Bianca (Monica Belluci), Collette attempts to defy everyone’s expectations as the new head of
the family business. A sort of female-empowerment narrative ensues – the lacking in confidence Collette tries to find her feet in Italy in an “Eat, Pray, Copulate” approach -- but the film seems remiss to commit to it wholeheartedly. Despite the detractors, Mafia Mamma cuts a goofy figure worth the watch.
Mafia Mamma (R) is playing at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre this Sunday, May 7.

Huge Home Round For Whitsunday United
With six matches played at Whitsunday Sports Park there was plenty of Action.
The divisional Men travelled to Mackay on Friday night to play Lions U17 Squad and Sarina. Although a close tussle, the younger legs of the Mackay Squad proved telling with the end result 4-1 to Lions. In the Div1 game, the Whitsunday boys made Sarina work all the way to the end, losing 2-1 but with many players on their second game, it may have been a different outcome with some fresh legs on the bench.
Saturday at the Sportspark started with a great performance by the U13 Div1 team at their first home game. In hot conditions, their strong defence shut down many attacks from the Country United side earning a hard-won draw 0-0. This was a huge improvement from last round with goal keeper Jai outstanding in goals and Roy Milliken giving 100 per cent as always.
It was a different story for the U15 Premier squad against a rampant City Brothers side. Although holding them to a tight result last week, the Whitsunday side never hit their stride conceding 6 goals to 1 in a game that
they will be disappointed in.
The Women continued their winning form in front of a big crowd.
Unfortunately, Sarina travelled up to play with only 14 players between two squads. In a competitive Reserves game, Whitsunday proved too strong across the park, scoring a 5-0 win based on solid defence. The Sarina ladies ran out of legs and with all of them playing a second game, were no match for the Whitsunday Premier Women who ran away with the game. A brave effort by the visitors just to face the onslaught.
Our Premier Men’s Squads also returned to form, winning both games against the visiting Rangers Squads. Whitsunday Reserves started their game dominating the ball and looking to play from out the back. Whitsundays made the breakthrough with a fantastic long-range goal by Luke Swift. Rangers equalised minutes later. The second half was a similar story with Whitsundays having the majority of the ball scoring twice midway
Twilight Racing
SAILING
The wild weather last week has been and gone, but for the Whitsunday Sailing Club sailors, it was a very reduced fleet who ventured on the water on Wednesday afternoon for the club’s twilight race.
On corrected time this lead was reduced to two minutes over Reignition, with Wide Load a further 20 seconds back.
Division 3 also saw four boats on the starting line, with Rossgo (Greg Hammon) leading the fleet away, despite a halyard failure shortly before the start.
through the second half to come away with a 3-1 victory. Special mention to Jarrod Clarke whose energy and determination when coming on contributed massively to the team’s performance
The Premier Men got a very important win against Mackay Rangers to jump into the top 4 for the first time this season. It proved to be a topsy turvy game with both teams having positive spells in the game. Sam Reynolds made his first appearance for the season at centre back and put in a man of the match performance, which greatly helped the team going forward and defensively. Goals came from Tommy Torzsok, Harry Hodgen, Sam Blake and Axel Da Silva in a 4-3 win.
Another massive home round next week. Can’t wait!
Contributed with thanks to Allan Milostic.
Only eight boats accepted the challenge to compete in conditions which included violent rainstorms, minimal visibility and wind gusts in excess of 30 knots.
With only four boats on the starting line for the Division 2 start, there was plenty of space, with Bobby’s Girl (Mark Beale) leading the fleet away, maintaining that lead throughout the race.
At the windward mark, Bobby’s Girl held a comfortable lead over Reignition (Charles Wallis), with Smooth Criminal (Iyas Shaheen) and Wide Load (Shannan Hart) behind. The gybe mark got interesting when the fleet arrived with zero visibility and a strong squall.
The first boats all chose to forego the gybe in favour of a granny turn, a new experience for many of the crew. Somehow the fleet managed to find the rounding marks and the finishing line, with Bobby’s Girl crossing the finish line almost six minutes ahead of Reignition, with Smooth Criminal a further two minutes back.
After a slow start, Matchless (Terry Stevens) took the lead on the water, gradually pulling away from Shiraz (John Cable) and Rossgo.
After surviving the first lap, Lighthorse (Di Forster) called time and headed ashore, leaving the others to battle the elements.
Matchless completed the course in 47 minutes, leading Shiraz home by five minutes with Rossgo a further two minutes back. On corrected time, Shiraz took the honours by 30 seconds over Matchless with Rossgo one minute off the pace.
The monthly prizes went to Bobby’s Girl and Matchless.
Races continue every Wednesday from 4:30pm, with limited crewing positions available. Those wishing to participate as crew need to be at the club by 2:30 pm (limited spots available).

Cannons Compete At QLD Water Polo Championships
The Cannonvale Cannons Swimming Club would like to commend Holly Perrin, Jacob Dewis, Jacob Bell and Jy Parkinson for being selected for the Northern Region Schools 13 – 19 years Water Polo teams.
Jy had to pull out of the team due to injury, however, Holly and the two Jacobs travelled down to Brisbane last week to compete in the Queensland Schools’ Championships.
All three said that the games were tough over four days, but thoroughly enjoyed championships. The NQ male team achieved 2nd place in the Plate (B) division and the NQ girls team achieved 3rd place in the Plate (B) division. Congratulations, Cannons! Apparently, they all played extremely well and improved so much over the four days. Meanwhile, back in Cannonvale, swimmers continue to train for a couple of winter carnivals and for
the start of the triathlon and open water season. The Cannonvale Cannons will be hosting a Winter carnival this year in mid-June.
The Cannonvale Cannons are also looking forward to the Annual Presentation Night which will be held on May 13.
This month, the coaches congratulated Tora Delac, Addie Sanders, and Roxy Groom for their excellent logbooks.
Congratulations to the following swimmers who have successfully met the criteria to upgrade in training: Evie Doherty, Eloise Chegwidden, Billy Harris, and Maeve Dichieria.
Miller Eaves and Lucas Zhang will be trialing training in the Bullets’ squad.
The top swim trainers last week were Harris Delac, Coren Farquhar, Bodhi Farquhar, Declan Dichiera, Andie Reynolds, Zach Trefz and Jax Clayworth. Well done, swimmers!

Weekly Darts Report
Arelatively quiet round of darts this weekend with only four matches on the cards. We begin with a bit of a surprising result, but an impressive one nonetheless, between Kameron Reason and Joe Wilson.
With Joe 2nd from top and Kam 3rd from bottom, you would be forgiven for thinking that this was a forgone conclusion, but Kameron had other ideas.
Going out to an early 4/1 lead, Kameron was playing very well, scoring and checking out consistently. After a small technical issue and a little delay, Joe came out firing, winning 3 legs on the trot, levelling the match at 4 all.
However, Kameron was not to be denied on the day, claiming only his 2nd win of the season, winning the match 7/4, propelling him up the ladder into 7th place. With little or no time to enjoy the victory, Kameron was straight back into the thick of it, this time he had the daunting task of taking on league leader Jamie Woods.
Kam’s confidence was high, and rightly so, however in truth, Jamie as he so often does, made light
DARTS
work of it, bringing Kameron straight back down to earth with a 7/1 victory.
Woodsy followed that up with an equally impressive display against Seumas Rose, defeating Seumas without dropping a single leg, 7/0.
That compounded a bad day at the office for Seumas, who suffered another heavy loss in his second game of the day, this time at the hands of Arthur McMinn, by 7 legs to 1.
Seumas clearly struggling for wins this season with only 1 so far to his name, which is well below his par, and he’ll be desperate to start putting that right sooner rather than later.
That win for Arthur puts him in a great spot on the league ladder, now sitting in 3rd thanks to that win, currently 2 points

Airlie Beach Boardwalk Upgrades
From 24 April - 9 June 2023 (6 weeks), Whitsunday Regional Council are undertaking works on the Airlie Beach Boardwalk between Coral Sea Marina and Coral Sea Resort that will result in the temporary closure of this section. The works are required to renew the asset, which is experiencing increasing numbers of broken boards due to its age and requires frequent oiling to withstand the coastal environment. The project benefits include:
• Increased width of the boardwalk by up to 1m
• Increased capacity to cater for a mix of cyclists, pedestrians and commercial operators
• Improved safety, and
• Significantly reduced ongoing maintenance costs for ratepayers as timber is replaced with a more durable composite fibre material.
To mitigate impacts:
• A detour is available for users to move between Airlie Beach and Cannonvale via Shute Harbour Road that will be appropriately signed closer to the project commencement date, and
• We are investigating additional Whitsunday Transit bus services to stop at Coral Sea Marina, to support all access movement between the Marina and Airlie Beach. We acknowledge the significant impacts of the project and apologise for the inconvenience created by the necessary works. Please view our Fact sheet and identify any project concerns prior to or during construction via our Online Engagement Portal - yoursay.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au.
This project is supported by the Australian Governments Local Roads & Community Infrastructure grant.
