TOOLS FOR LIFE

Editor’s Note

Hi Everyone,

This week it has been wonderful to see so many of our local tourism operators receive national acclaim and recognition for all their hard work at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards which were held in Sydney last Friday night.

Our region brought home two golds, one silver and one bronze award, representing 25 per cent of the total awards given to all Queensland operators – this huge contribution helped enable our state to top all others and be crowned best state for tourism in our country.

Well done everyone!

We spoke with many of the operators this week (see our special feature on pages 1013) and each was asked what it took to top Australian Tourism.

The four central pillars of success that the owners of these incredible businesses mentioned most were – passion, consistency, innovation and resilience.

I can see how these admirable qualities helped these businesses stay on track as they battled through challenging times such as Cyclone Debbie,

Covid 19 and the restrictions that followed.

It was resilience that got them through and saw them come out smiling on the other side. It was innovation that allowed them to pivot their business model and adapt to a changing tourism landscape.

It was consistency that saw them show up every morning and deliver a quality product no matter what.

And of course what ties it all together is passion – with enthusiasm, motivation and a genuine love for their jobs promoting the magical holiday destination of the Whitsundays – anything is possible!

Once again, a huge congratulations to everyone involved in the local tourism industry – from crew to cleaners, owners to skippers, the wonderful team at Tourism Whitsundays and of course each of us in the community for providing a warm welcome. Rach

“If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life”

When the kind-hearted gentlemen at the Airlie Beach Men’s Shed heard about the special delivery of supplies heading over to help families in Fiji and Vanuatu, they jumped at the opportunity to help out.

Recently, many South Sea Islander communities have been ravaged by a series of cyclones which, in many cases, have caused destruction to property and resulted in many homes needing extensive repairs.

Upon hearing about the destruction, Coral Sea Marina collaborated with four of their resident super yachts which have offered to transport donated goods to provide much-needed aid to these countries.

They will be departing on March 31 and over the past few weeks, dozens of people within the community have been donating clothes and other essential items.

Last Friday the local Men’s Shed also got involved by donating their surplus tools to the cause.

A large cut-off saw and several other battery-powered items such as grinders, sanders, drills and of course basic hand tools such as hammers were all packed up and sent off.

The night before, two Men’s Shed volunteers cleaned the tools, charged them up and ensured they were in good working order.

If you would like to donate, they are now taking donations of items such as nails, tarpaulins, hand tools, large cooking pots, laundry soap for cold water hand washing, female hygiene products, plastic bins with lids and first aid items.

Donations can be received at the Coral Sea Marina Office located above the Garden Bar Bistro.

All items must be clean and in good working order.

Chopper Crewman Honoured Following 2018 Shark Attack Rescue

The rescue officer who risked his life by jumping into the water, just metres from a recent shark attack, in order to save the life of the victim, has just been honoured with an Australian Bravery Decoration.

RACQ CQ Rescue rescue crew officer Ben McCauley said he was “just doing his job” when he attended a series of three shark attacks in Cid Harbour on Whitsunday Island in 2018.

On that fateful year, the whole community was rocked when the previously safe harbour saw a spate of attacks within a couple of months.

Justine Barwick almost lost her leg when a shark attacked while she was swimming. The following day, twelve-year-old Melbourne girl Hannah Papps’ leg was amputated above the knee after another shark attack.

Then, less than two months later 32-yearold Melbourne doctor Daniel Christidis sadly lost his life in a third shark attack.

Earlier this week Ben McCauley was commended by The Governor-General, His

Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley for his role in saving Justine Barwick.

Ben, who had only been with RACQ CQ Rescue for six months, attended the scene where Justine was found aboard a 39-foot yacht bleeding profusely with barely a pulse after being bitten while swimming.

“The shark had taken a huge chunk out of her inside leg, and she was bleeding out,” Ben explained.

“Her husband and friend on board had quickly packed the gaping wound to help stem the haemorrhaging and this undoubtedly saved her life.”

Unable to land due to high tides and inhibited by more than 30 other vessels anchored in the harbour, the rescue helicopter crew made the difficult decision to winch Justine out of an inflatable dinghy.

Ben was winched down out of the helicopter into the water – where the shark had been less than an hour earlier - and had to swim to a dinghy and climb on board.

Justine was secured into an ARV (Air Rescue Vest) and winched up with the rescue

crewman into the helicopter within 20 minutes to be treated by a Critical Care Paramedic.

“To be honest I didn’t think about the shark in the water that day. When you’re on the job, you’re on the job; I had 100 other things that I was concentrating on other than the shark,” said Ben.

Justine was taken to Mackay Base Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery before being sent to Brisbane the next day for an 18-hour vascular surgery to reconstruct her leg.

Five years after the incident which changed her life, Justine said she was very excited to hear of the news of Ben’s commendation.

“Ben was part of an extraordinary effort on that day,” she said.

“His contribution was fundamental to my survival. His bravery during my retrieval was amazing. It would seem to me that had Ben not taken advantage of what was very probably his only opportunity to reach me that the outcome for me would have been very different.

“Myself, my family and friends are all in debt to everyone who assisted in my journey through retrieval, survival, recovery, and rehab – but had I not been winched into that helicopter when I was, I doubt that I would have made it. Thank you to Ben and all at RACQ CQ Rescue. You are lifesavers.”

Church Cent Sale Returns

Alocal church will hold a ‘Cent Sale’ next weekend to fundraise for upkeep costs to its heritage listed site at the top end of Proserpine’s Main Street.

The St Paul’s Anglican Church fundraiser will open doors from 12.30pm at the Proserpine Leisure Centre for a 1.30pm start, with $5 admittance to partake of a Devonshire tea – and a chance to win wonderful prizes. Whitsunday District Anglican Church representative Ailsa Reinke said the Cent Sale was a popular event prior to pandemic restrictions, and guests can expect a return to form on April 1.

Housing In Crisis Council Take Action

Calling for immediate action and a “crisis response” to the housing situation in the Whitsundays, Council has moved into strong advocacy mode by calling on the Australian Government to extend the deadline for the operation of the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS).

At Wednesday’s ordinary meeting in Bowen, Mayor Julie Hall and Councillors voted unanimously to submit a motion to the Australian Local Government Association for potential inclusion in the National General Assembly 2023 Business Papers.

“As an elected advocate for our Whitsunday community, I am committed to creating a region where everyone should have access to safe, secure, and affordable housing,” said Mayor Hall. “Unfortunately, many families and individuals in our community are currently struggling to find affordable rental accommodation, and this is a problem that needs urgent attention from the top tiers of government.”

Mayor Hall was recently contacted by

a resident who said he would be homeless in June as well as his 82-year-old neighbour because the NRAS will end for them, and they can’t afford the 30 per cent increase in their rent.

The NRAS scheme helps people afford housing by providing incentives to property investors to build and rent out affordable housing, helping to increase the supply of rental properties and lower rental prices.

When the program begins its staggered shut-down soon, it will affect many households right across the region.

Mayor Hall says she is determined to advocate strongly for its extension.

“Families, couples and singles are counting on the Federal and State governments to act and it breaks my heart that homelessness is on the rise,” she said.

Homelessness in Queensland has increased by 22 per cent, and a recent report by the Queensland Council of Social Service revealed 300,000 people across Queensland are experienc-

ing housing insecurity amid soaring rental prices and inadequate social housing supply.

“This is a crisis, and it deserves a crisis response,” said Mayor Hall.

“In the decade leading up to 2017, there was “minimal” investment by state and federal governments in affordable and social housing.”

Mayor Hall said the housing shortage and rental crisis are not issues that emerged overnight so there are no “quick fixes” that will see the problem disappear.

“Advocacy on behalf of my community to ensure they are not forgotten will be key as it is going to take a whole range of short, medium and longterm solutions to fix this crisis,” she said.

“By extending the NRAS, we can continue to create opportunities for our residents to secure affordable housing, and we can also support our local economy by encouraging investment in our region.”

“It is essential for our heritage listed church, which was opened in 1959 with its unique architecture, to receive the support of our community,” Ms Reinke said.

Goorganga ‘Pains’

Politicians Fume At “Empty Promises” On Flood Plains

Federal Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox and State Member for Whitsunday Amanda Camm were “shocked” by Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey’s “political spin” when questioned about the Bruce Highway – Goorganga Plains Upgrade project in early March.

The Queensland Member of Parliament announced last week that planning was underway to floodproof the flood-prone sections of the Bruce Highway at Goorganga Plains and Myrtle Creek, as well as Hamilton Plains, in a coordinated approach.

Minister Bailey made the announcement despite the fact the three projects have been in the planning stages since late 2018.

“By addressing Myrtle Creek, Hamilton Plains and Goorganga Plains together, the Department of Transport and Main Roads will be able to improve flood resilience in the area,” he said.

Ms Camm called it an “announcement that doesn’t announce anything.”

“Minister Bailey should have been honest with the people of the Whitsundays and just said that the $12m, that the previous Federal Coalition Government put on the table since 2018 to start the planning for Goorganga has sat idle,” The Member for Whitsunday said.

“The Queensland Government has prioritised projects in the South East over the safety of regional Australians.”

The Goorganga Plains upgrade, alongside the Hamilton Plains project, received funding from the previous Federal Government in 2018 and 2019 through lobbying efforts of past Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen.

Mr Willcox said in his time as Mayor of Whitsunday Regional Council, he worked alongside Mr Christensen to secure funding from the Roads of Strategic Importance Program.

“All this money already committed thanks to the previous [Federal Government], yet our Queensland Government allow

us year after year to be flooded in with residents unable to get to loved ones,” Mr Willcox said.

“Labor’s had 5 years to design and develop a plan to flood mitigate Goorganga Plains, yet in this new re-announcement they’re still seeking community consultation.”

Ms Camm questioned whether Mr Bailey re-iterating an almost five-year-old project was to “hide the fact that Hamilton Plains Upgrade project is being delayed”.

Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox said he was “appalled” by what he said was a “politics-before-people tactic”.

“[The State Government] are using a 2018 Coalition Government commitment to run an ad hoc political campaign at the expense of the Dawson people,” Mr Willcox said.

“We’ve seen year after year that this Government only prioritises the Southeast Corner and we are tired of it.”

A business case for the Bruce Highway upgrades at Goorganga Plains and Myrtle Creek was “expected to be completed by early 2023” according to a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson.

Minister Bailey said the flood immunity upgrade project is “currently in the detailed design phase with construction expected to commence next year.”

BIG 4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort took home gold for the best Caravan and Holiday Park category.

Red Cat Adventures’ Wild Cat tour, based in Mackay, was awarded gold for Best New Tourism Business in Australia.

Ocean Rafting won silver for the Best Adventure Tourism experience in the country and Magnums Unique Accommodation Airlie Beach were awarded Best 3 to 3.5 star Accommodation Category.

Our region scored four out of the coveted 16 national awards given to Queensland operators, enabling our state to rise above all the others for its tourism offering.

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said that these results confirm that Queensland is Australia’s leading visitor destination.

“Queensland has literally scooped the pool at the Australian Tourism Awards,” he said.

“Congratulations to all Queensland Awards winners and finalists on an absolutely magnificent result.

“The resilience, commitment to success and creativity of Queensland tourism businesses really is second to none.”

The Australian Tourism Awards were not the only accolades brought home from operators in our region, with two other local businesses recognised for their achievement as well.

Queens Beach Tourist Village in Bowen was awarded Best Grey Nomad Large Caravan Park at February’s Great Nomad

Awards.

This win accentuates the love Bowen has for the Grey Nomads and the large part they play in Bowen’s tourism industry.

In addition, Club Wyndham Airlie Beach was celebrated on an international level when it received an award for Best Interior Design for its $3 million presidential apartments refurbishment project at the GNEX Vacation Industry Awards earlier this month.

The three-level apartments have undergone a significant refurbishment with extended roof lines and extended facilities including outdoor bathrooms.

Tourism Whitsundays CEO, Rick Hamilton said he is thrilled with the win, stating it’s no surprise to see exceptional Whitsundays experiences acknowledged after a year of record expenditure and visitation.

“Everything about The Whitsundays is outstanding; our icons, our people and our experiences from Airlie Beach and the islands, Bowen in the north to Collinsville and Proserpine in the west,” he said.

“These awards are a testament to just how outstanding our region really is.

“Congratulations to all the winners, what an incredible achievement for your businesses but also for us all in The Whitsundays.”

Tourism Whitsundays Chair, Julie Telford said the tourism industry in The Whitsundays offers exceptional experiences to a wide range of travellers, and these awards really highlight this.

“Visitors to The Whitsundays can be young backpackers on their first East Coast Roadtrip, seasonal Grey Nomads

on their tenth visit, or families seeking to bond together for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure,” she said.

“The Whitsundays is an incredible destination that caters to all demographics. Our region should be very proud of how passionate and hardworking our high-quality operators are.

“Everyone working in customer-facing jobs has exceptional service that shines through to our visitors to our Whitsundays.

“A huge congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who is sharing their passion for The Whitsundays with our visitors.”

BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort

brought home its third gold award at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards over the weekend, and they are celebrating being crowned our nation’s best in the Caravan and Holiday Parks Category once again.

The popular Whitsunday Resort has been owned and operated by the McKinnon family for the past 29 years and has seen a phenomenal transformation during that time to become the 4.5-star, multi-awardwinning property that it is today.

Owner Greg McKinnon, who attended the awards ceremony on Friday night with both family and staff, was both ecstatic and emotional upon being announced as the national winner.

“As both a family and a team, we are all so very proud to win this award,” he said.

“The Australian Tourism Awards are the pinnacle of awards in our industry and we are so proud to not only have won gold but to have shared a part in celebrating the very best that Australia has to offer.”

BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort have a team of 74 warm, friendly and passionate staff who Greg credits with playing a big part in the success of his business.

“They can say that they work for the best

park in Australia!” he said.

“That’s a wonderful reward for all their hard work.”

Over the past year, BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort has focused on its offerings for guests with accessible needs, including a new vision-impaired cabin, resort Braille signage, and of course, the resort’s Sensory Room, the Reilly Room, which caters for children on the autism spectrum and their families by offering a special holiday retreat.

With more exciting plans ahead, including Bunk House dormitory-style accommodation for groups and the budget FIT market, the Re sort will soon be adding more new cabins and further developments to their resort pool area and Kid’s Club.

BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort has become synonymous with offering the very best Australian holiday experience. Loved by return guests for their consistently friendly service, concerted customer focus and commitment to continual improvement and innovation, the resort is the first choice for a Queensland holiday. Set amongst 10 hectares of beautifully

landscaped tropical gardens, it caters for a variety of budgets with a wide range of accommodation options from camping and caravanning sites to luxury, three-bedroom condos.

What does it take to top Australian tourism?

I think it comes down to always being at the top of your game –we’ve been operating for almost 30 years and entering awards for 27 – you can’t just keep putting in the same product, you’ve got to be innovative, and constantly developing the park so that we’re a leader within the industry – we always aim to exceed expectations.

What features make you the best?

We always aim to be the ‘first-of or the best-ofs’ – we weren’t the first waterpark but we put in 13 waterslides which was pretty amazing! But of course, it is also our fantastic staff - our staff are an integral part in making people’s holidays, and their overall experience, the best it can possibly be!

The team at Red Cat Adventures are celebrating as their sister company, Wildcat Mackay, brings home the gold award for Best New Tourism Business in the country at the Qantas Australia Tourism Awards held in Sydney on Friday night.

Red Cat Adventures were inducted into Queensland Tourism’s Hall of Fame, after winning best Major Tour and Transport Operator and Best Adventure Tourism Operator for three consecutive years.

Owners Julie and Asher Telford say that, after such a successful 10 years, it has been a pleasure to launch a new business that showcases Mackay “in a way that didn’t exist previously.”

Upon accepting the award on Friday night, Julie said she felt humbled by the unexpected win.

“To say the cards were stacked against us would be an understatement!” she said.

“To be recognised as Australia’s best new tourism business is testament to the innovation and tenacity involved and proof of our ability to design and develop new tourism experiences that people want.”

Wildcat launched in December 2021 and since this date has offered daily tours to either Scawfell, Cockermouth, Brampton or Keswick islands, with the location handpicked to suit the tides and weather

of the day.

Tours depart the Mackay Marina at 9.30am, returning at 4.30pm and include snorkelling, paddleboarding, beachcombing and informative eco-history commentary, as well as morning and afternoon tea and lunch, with drinks from the licensed bar.

Trip advisor awarded Wildcat Mackay the 2021 Certificate of Excellence and in November 2022 won Gold for New Tourism Business at the Queensland Tourism Awards.

Bowen are proving that they are the top pick for travelling retirees from around the country thanks to a local caravan park winning a national accolade, taking home gold at the recent Grey Nomads Awards.

Queens Beach Tourist Village (QBTV) won the Best Grey Nomad Large Caravan Park category for the third time at a virtual awards ceremony which was held in February. Park Caretaker, Gerry Tomsett said that the awards recognise and reward businesses and services that provide exemplary products or experiences for mature-aged travellers in Australia.

She believes that QBTV won gold because they look after the comforts of the over 50s and provide a warm, friendly service to all.

“We have a nice community here,” she said.

“We have wonderful accommodation which is level and flat, no hills, so it is easy for the over 50s to access.

“We also have entertainment every fort-

night, water aerobics and craft afternoons where everyone has a lot of fun.”

Owners Peter and Jennie Greer said they were thrilled to win for the third time.

“Thanks to all our Grey Nomads who choose to stay with us on their extended holidays, we look forward to welcoming you back to the village very soon,” they said.

“Thanks also to the staff and judges at the Grey Nomad Awards for hosting an incredible event from start to finish.”

QBTV won gold at the Grey Nomad Awards in 2019, 2021 and 2022 – if they win next years’ 2023 award they will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Ocean Rafting has another trophy for their cabinet following last weekend’s Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, which saw them take out silver in the highly competitive Adventure Tourism Category.

With over 25 years in business, Ocean Rafting has been awarded multiple gold, silver and bronze accolades on a national level over the years, and owners Peter and Jan Claxton say that each award is a credit to consistently delivering a quality product.

“We really want to thank our incredibly dedicated and passionate staff, which includes a team of four recognised Master Reef Guides, who do an amazing job not only showcasing the wonders of the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef, but in protecting these precious assets and educating our guests about what they can do to make a difference,” said Peter.

“After over 25 years of operations, we will never stop appreciating every single one of these awards.

“We also certainly couldn’t have done it without our guests, who we love to see on the ride of their life!”

Ocean Rafting has eight semi-rigid inflatable vessels and one 7-seater Australian-built Airvan which took to the skies almost a year ago.

This new dimension to the business means that, along with other partner aircraft, they can now offer the ultimate Whitsunday experiences from above, on and below the water.

A true multi-generational operation, Ocean Rafting has three generations of the family actively involved in daily operations, making it connected to its humble beginnings, while being famed for its innovative approach and for acting as a leader in Whitsunday marine tourism and aviation operations.

Offering two exciting day tour adventures, Ocean Rafting has special permits that enable it to showcase one of Australia’s most iconic beaches, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, as well as flights over the world-renowned Heart Reef, on a daily basis.

Guests can choose from the Northern Exposure and Southern Lights, with an exhilarating ride to Whitehaven Beach, the ultimate access to Hill Inlet and special snorkelling sites, as well as the Fly and Raft package, 60-minute scenic flights, charter options and the

Reef Seeker environmental educa tional program.

The fleet of eight semi-rigid inflatable vessels allows guests to experience an adrenalin-fuelled ride amongst the beauty of the Whitsundays, while a maximum of 32 passengers per vessel, allows for a personalised experience in the pleasure of a small group.

“We sincerely thank our many industry partners and tourism bodies, with whom we work, both within Australia and the world over,” said Peter.

“It’s a team effort and we have all worked cohesively to place the Whitsundays on the map as the ultimate Whitsunday holiday destination.”

What does it take to top Australian Tourism?

It takes hard work! But it also takes innovation, which as you can imagine, is imperative when you have the length of operations we have, so we continually reinvest in the business and just don’t take our finger off the pulse. It also takes passion, but we love what we do, our family loves it and our team love it. Our culture is aligned to strong values that are reflective of a family business committed to best practice standards. And very importantly, we always aim to provide the best possible experience we can for our guests, which is reflected in our number one position on TripAdvisor, while protecting our precious Great Barrier Reef Marine Park as proud reef ambassadors!

Bringing Back “The Old Handshake Deals”

Liberty Rural Bowen employs both the best of modern and old-fashioned methods to serve its rural community – and they’ve been doing it for close to a decade in the Whitsundays.

With their new premises on Peter Delemonthe Road, the business is keeping alive the traditions of the long-gone milkman with their deep connection to the community and friendly-face style service, merging the past with the backing and technology of a present, modern major wholesaler.

Depot Area Manager Scott Prosser said the company - which services the region’s railway with bulk fuel, distributes oil to farms across a massive swath of land, and is a proud supplier of businesses across Bowen – has quickly become a pillar of the local community.

“Of our employees here, every one of them lives locally,” Mr Prosser said.

“For Liberty, it’s a case of supporting the town that is supporting us. Professionally, what we have to offer is that top level of service you can have from the biggest companies, but then we maintain the community-minded approach of a small business.

“I’ve lived here for 16 years, and as long as I’ve been with Liberty, we have made sure to give to Bowen with sports sponsorships and event sponsorships and more. For us,

it’s just common sense.”

Driver Coordinator Ken Pankhurst said the outlet is the only oil stockist in Bowen, covering Ayr down to Proserpine, and is planning to expand from its already substantial 43 thousand litres of oil on hand to provide for its massive distribution radius.

“There’s not a lot of oil you need that we don’t have in stock,” Mr Pankhurst said.

“When we speak to farmers and they need something A.S.A.P, then we’re your guys. No one knows when they’ll blow a hydraulic line or something like that, and we can get it to you anytime with our 24hour on-call service. “

Whether they be providing wholesale for retailers, or helping your average Joe, Liberty Rural Bowen act as the “old-school

style distributor,” Mr Prosser said.

“The way I describe it is the style where you’re talking to someone on the phone from Liberty Rural Bowen, or popping in to see us, and you know it’s a person with knowledge of the local area,” Mr Prosser said.

“You know that they’re the ones direct-

ing the trucks, making sure they get to where they’re going. And it also extends to in-person; if you drop by to have a cuppa and a chinwag with us, that’s the traditional way we like to do business.

“Someone might ring and say: ‘Bob needs a bit of oil,’ and we know exactly who and where Bob is because we’re as local as they come.”

• Stop working harder to overcompensate: Step back and identify the easiest things you can do which will have the biggest impacts – work smarter.

• Step back into your values: Ensure what you do, aligns with what you believe in.

• Ask for feedback: Tell your manager you thrive with positive feedback.

re you guilty of poking fun at softskills? For decades they’ve been harassed and bullied “who are you – you’re not as important as skills!”

They’ve been name called ‘warm and fuzzy’ and sent packing when it comes to recruitment selection and competencies and skillsets.

• Set boundaries: Burnout can be overwhelming, so as you’re getting back on track set boundaries and commit to saying ‘no’.

But at last, 2023 is their year and they’ve come roaring to the forefront wearing the superhero cape of ‘Power Skills’!

• Find joy in everyday things you do: It might be helping a colleague, a good coffee in the sun, a podcast on a walk, planting sunflowers in your garden, or a regular catch up with a friend.

Why power skills? We can purchase and download systems, processes, structures and policies – we can also find an infinite amount of knowledge and wisdom at the ends of our fast-tapping fingertips - but we can’t download or purchase the emotional intelligence and people skills that creates a productive, motivated, engaged and happy work team.

• Curiosity – the constant quest to learn more rather than form judgements

• Active listening – being willing to have your mind changed

The most important part of any job, however, is following the three fundamental steps of preparation, application and finish.

If so, it’s time to enlist the skills of Jonathan and Kathryn Pourau, who operate Superior House Painting Specialists and Superior Concrete Resurfacing.“Our systems are designed to deliver a great result and finish that will last for years,” said Jonathan.

“Preparation is crucial. Shortcuts are a waste of time and money and will lead to failures such as cracking, fading or discolouration, peeling and flaking or mould.

Initial steps include carrying out repair work such as cut and fill as applicable.

“Acid etching and pressure cleaning creates greater adhesion for external surfaces. Further surface preparation includes priming, undercoating and sealing.

ome loan interest rates have risen from around 1.5% to 6% in less than a year. This has increased monthly home loan repayments by 60%. On a modest $500,000, 25 year home loan the repayments have gone from $2,000 per month to over $3,200. Lots of people and especially those in capital cities owe way more than $500,000.nvesting in growth assets like shares and property is a long-term game. Growth assets always average out better then defensive assets like cash and fixed interest in the long run. The reason you need to look long term is that growth assets fall in value as well as rise, so you need to give them time to average out.

Investing in growth assets is like buying a farm. You know there’ll be years where you go backwards. The reason you buy the farm is that if you don’t panic, hold on and run your business well, in the long run the good years will more than compensate for the bad and you’ll come out with a good average.

Home loan repayments are taking more and more of the average working person’s income and it’s not going to get better anytime soon. This is not interest rates going from average to high, this is interest rates going from ultra-low back to average.

At Eclipse, we have never seen this level of enquiry about budgeting advice. Where we might have had one enquiry on this topic every couple of months, we’re now getting several enquiries every week.

The key here is trying to take the emotion out of it and think rationally. If you hold a quality asset of long-term value and suddenly it’s price drops, emotionally you want to sell. Logically, this is the worst time to sell. Ideally, you should try to buy more whilst the price is low.

Unfortunately we can’t help most of the people phoning up. You see the majority of them think that we can wave some magic wand and suddenly make their income more than their spending. They aren’t prepared to do the hard work in analyzing their historical spending patterns and then the harder work in actually changing those spending habits. They think a Financial Planner can provide a quick fix to one of the toughest challenges in the finance, just as tough as the challenge to lose weight is personally.

To relate this to super, if you monitor your balance regularly you will have seen some significant falls since late 2021. If you’re still working and have five years or more to go until retirement it is nothing to worry about as you are a buyer of investments. Think about buying some more by making some extra contributions whilst the market is down. If you’re close to or in retirement, then you are a seller of investments as you regularly withdraw your pension. If you don’t have a protection strategy built into your super pension, you should talk to someone. With no strategy in place your options are to draw less pension to ensure your money lasts or accept that it will run out quicker if you keep drawing

The first step is in working out your real, historical spending patterns. It’s about going back through your bank and credit card statements over at least two months and actually categorizing each and every

The key to retirement planning is having a plan. Talking to an expert means you’ll understand the big picture of how long your retirement pot will last and how much income you can draw. You’ll also know you’re maximising your Centrelink entitlements. Whilst protection strategies have a cost for retirees, every one of our retiree clients have one in place in their super pensions. They all decided that when the inevitable crash happens, they don’t want to be forced to draw less pension or worry their money will run out early. They want to protect the ability to draw a good income and enjoy those hard-earned retirement years no matter what the share market is doing.

At Eclipse, we used to offer packages where we would do the work in analyzing and categorizing previous spending. When someone else does the work, it doesn’t mean anything. If you haven’t taken the time to work through the transactions one by one, the result doesn’t resonate. The bottom line is, just like getting fitter and losing weight, you can’t contract out the hard work, you need to do it yourself. We have some handy spreadsheets that help categorize and record your spending but just like losing weight, budgeting is hard work and only you can do it. Councillor Column With Clay Bauman

I’m very happy to say that other Councillors and Whitsunday Regional Council (WRC) staff have supported my idea for a Cannonvale Community catch up which will be held at the restaurant in TAFE Cannonvale (190 Shute Harbour Rd) on Wednesday, March 29 from 9am till 11 am.

If you can’t make it in person, you can ask a question now through the WRC Yoursay webpage. There is even a chance to win an Easter Hamper if you register or update your details on Yoursay this month. Visit yoursay.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au for more information.

I fully support the Mayor’s initiative to connect directly with the community through these events as they move around the region and I look forward to talking with as many people as possible.

As part of Council’s current Community Engagement Strategy, we are investigating creating a network of ‘Community Champions’. These people would collaborate with Council early in project development and channel information back and forth between Council and their networks.

If you have the time and passion to participate in forums, workshops and other consultation activities relevant to your areas of interest, or if you have a strong connection to social networks that you represent or share information with, being

Young Musicians Play At Dingo Beach

For the second time in recent months, a group of young aspiring musicians are coming to the stage and are set to perform at the Dingo Beach Hotel this Saturday.

During the evening, it’s time for the bands to shine – The Microns, Sparrow Sisters, Trouble Makers, Myenvy and Category 5 will all play.

WHAT: Young Whitsunday Musicians

a Community Champion might be a role for you. Head to Yoursay Whitsunday for more information.

For those that haven’t heard, Council has voted against the approval for a Transport Depot near the intersection of Rifle Range Road, Mt Marlow and against a proposal for commercial storage sheds next to Tropic Rd, Cannonvale. 58 submissions and a petition played a role in Council’s decisions and shows me how important having your say is.

Working towards planning that allows new residential, industrial and economic growth, while maintaining our liveability and amenity will always be very close to my heart. It is not just the current decisions that are important, but the long term forward thinking that sets us up for a successful and prosperous future which is a key aspect of our job.

Amongst lots of meetings and reading, I’ve been following up on people’s concerns and complaints and had the pleasure of visiting the Scouts, SES, PCYC Sports Expo, the AFL Preseason Carnival and even had the opportunity to crew in the lady skipper’s sailing race on International Women’s Day.

My role as your Councillor certainly is varied and I am trying my best for everyone who has put their trust in me.

An initiative of the not-for-profit group, Music Evolution Project, these events represent a platform for local performers to shine.

“We will have a couple of adults performing this time as well,” said organiser Lisa Stanley.

“This is a great platform for up-and-coming musicians and it is really important for the whole community to come and show their support.”

A cornerstone of the Music Evolution Project is the positive impact that playing music and performing has on your mental health.

“We provide a completely free program to the community and actively help people with their mental health,” explained Lisa.

“These performers are truly amazing, and this is a great opportunity for the community to follow them through the year, see how they improve and watch them as they become professional musicians.”

The Dingo Beach event will include a range of vocalists, pianists and of course bands. Performers include vocalists Meg McKeon, Ella Kelly, Tanika Lulham, Destiny, Chloe Kaddatz, Amber Hinschen, Sue Nami and Dominik James.

A “Cuppa” With QCWA

It is a different landscape in the Whitsundays than it was 100 years ago when the region’s oldest chapter of the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) began in Proserpine - and times are still changing.

Along with the new era, the local branch is changing, too, and has added what it calls “Social Cuppas” to its itinerary.

The Airlie Beach Bicentennial Boardwalk has allowed walkers, joggers, bike riders, segways, tuk tuks, prams and Park Run devotees to wander on the water’s edge overlooking the Coral Sea since 1988.

The boardwalk was built as part of the Australian Bicentennial celebrations and initially it consisted of a simple walking track which connected Shingley Beach to Cannonvale.

Now, the boardwalk encompasses over 630 metres of timber structure and is a much-loved trail which allows residents and tourists to walk all the way from Airlie Beach to Cannonvale Beach.

Council will be undertaking an upgrade on the section of the boardwalk between Coral Sea Marina and Coral Sea Resort from April 24 – June 9 (weather dependent). This closure will allow us to replace the current tired timber boards with a composite fibre material, and towiden the boardwalk by up to a metre.

These works will make the boardwalk more resilient to traffic, increase its longevity and significantly reduce annual maintenance costs.

The upgrade will ensure that residents and visitors to the amazing Whitsundays will continue to enjoy this wonderful asset for many years to come.

Hoping to bring families, friends, and community into its fold, the Proserpine QCWA held the first Cuppa of its kind on Tuesday, March 14.

Local ‘Country Women’ assembled at Village Café & Restaurant Airlie Beach to enjoy each other’s company, form connections, enlighten non-members about the QCWA, and discuss the branches’ upcoming 100th birthday.

“What we’re doing with these new social meetings opening our group up to the community,” QCWA Proserpine member Kerri Southee said.

“For all of us at this branch, QCWA has given us something special. The kind of people that I have met here, you would never expect. Intriguing people who are so kind and thoughtful

and care about this community.

“We want others to have that opportunity to meet us and be part of something bigger than themselves.”

The local branch plans to host Social Meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, and Ms Southee said non-members and their families were encouraged to attend.

“Bring your kids along – a lot of us here are already grandmas, so we’re used to it!” she laughed.

The next will be held at the Proserpine CWA Hall at 4 Faust Street, Proserpine.

The Proserpine QCWA is also in preparations for a high tea for its 100th birthday celebrations in July (with dates to be finalised soon).

With just two owners overseeing its entire 50-year history, Cannonvale Marine is celebrating not only an impressive personal milestone but also the outstanding achievement of being one of the most stable and longest-running businesses in the Whitsundays.

Established in 1973 by retired engineer Ron Dorman, Cannonvale Marine was the first stand-alone marine dealership in the region.

Ron’s two sons operated the business and after six years a young Darrell Hinschen started his marine engine apprenticeship with the team.

Darrell soon became an integral part of the business and, 14 years later, he was offered the opportunity to purchase Cannonvale Marine with his wife Leanne.

The couple partnered with another Cannonvale Marine apprentice, Matthew Telford, who was a partner in the business for 15 years.

Darrell and Leanne have now operated the business successfully for the last 30 years.

Both Whitsunday locals, Darrell and Leanne are originally from well-known cane-farming families.

“I grew up fishing because our farm was on the O’Connell River,” said Darrell.

“My oldest, happiest memories are fishing – going down the river with Dad – or we’d go to one of the creeks and fish, so it was only natural for me to get into this.”

Over the years Darrell and Leanne have witnessed many changes within the industry.

Technology has been one of the most significant - from the introduction of GPS and electric trolling motors to the reduction in the use of two-stroke motors which have now been replaced with modern, technically advanced, cleaner engines.

“Another big change is that up to 10-15 years ago we were selling boats, primarily for people to go fishing. We are now selling boats for people to go boating and enjoy the Whitsundays,” explains Darrell.

“We’ve still got those people that want to

Service, Parts And Repair

Cannonvale Marine is just as busy servicing the needs of boaters as they are in selling its impressive range of Quintrex aluminium boats and trailers.

Whether you are bringing your boat in for its 12-monthly service or you need a trou-

blesome engine fixed, their service team offer expert workmanship, and is both fast and efficient in getting your boat back on the water.

Their chandlery also offers a range of gadgets, spare parts and accessories.

fish, but we’ve now also got others that probably wouldn’t even carry a rod on the boat! ”

The Whitsundays now has the highest number of boat registrations per capita in Australia – but while the nature and the scale of their boating business have definitely changed, it is the good

old-fashioned service at Cannonvale Marine that has remained the same.

“Our focus has always been on doing the best job possible,” said Darrell.

“When we first started there wasn’t a big population so if you didn’t get repeat business you wouldn’t last – the fact that we’ve been here for 50 years means that we must be doing something right!”

Power Equipment and Cyclones

For the last 15 years, Cannonvale Marine has also supplied power equipment to the community as a Honda supplier, offering everything from mowers and brush cutters to generators.

This side of the business operated quietly for a long time but it was when Tropical Cyclone Debbie hit the Whitsundays in 2017 that it became an essential part of the immediate recovery.

“During that time, we were open 12 hours

a day just fixing generators and we didn’t charge anyone,” said Leanne.

“Everyone was in shock; everyone was just trying to cope – we rang our supplier and of course, every business has a credit limit – but they told us we could have whatever we wanted!

“I nearly cried! We were able to provide the community with the generators they needed.”

Costs Then And Now

A 25 horsepower engine – was $785 – now $5,900

A 3.7 metre boat trailer - was $180 - now $2,300

A 115 horsepower outboard - was $2,055, now over $21,000

We’ve Got Half A Century To Celebrate!

To mark their half-century of trading, Cannonvale Marine is inviting the community to a special evening of celebrations at their showroom at 14 McIntosh Drive on Saturday, April 1.

A night of light entertainment, food, drinks and great conversation, Darrell and Leanne are excited to welcome regular customers, friends and those in the community who would like to join in.

“After 30 years of ownership and 50 years of Cannonvale Marine in total, I think it’s something worthy of celebrating,” said Darrell.

“It’s a good catch-up with like-minded people, that’s what it’s about – we all have that one thing in common, boating and fishing, so there is always plenty to talk about.”

On the night local talented musician Jenny Borellini will be providing entertainment, a local food van will be cook-

ing up delicious pizza for all to enjoy and the esky will be brimming with cold drinks to say cheers to 50 years!

During the evening guests are also welcome to browse the boats, trailers and other boating merchandise – with many special deals on the night, for your opportunity to snap up a bargain.

Anyone who spends over $50 will automatically enter into a draw to win a boat valued at $13,000.

“This night is our way of saying thank you to everyone who has helped over the years,” said Darrell.

“We hope you can make it!”

It was 26 years ago that Darrell and Leanne made one of their best business decisions by becoming the Whitsunday region’s dedicated Quintrex dealer.

An elite brand, the decision to sell Quintrex at Cannonvale Marine allowed them to provide the best products for the booming local boating community.

“Quintrex are the number one aluminium boat brand in Australia by a country mile,” said Darrell.

“I think their sales account for around 70 per cent of all boats sold in Australia – the 30 per cent is then everybody else so they are a massive company.”

For Darrell and Leanne, however, the size, quality and market share were just one part of the picture – they also value the way Quintrex listen to their dealers and are open to taking on suggestions.

“At our annual conferences they ask us for our opinion and customer feedback,” explains Darrell.

“And then within a very short space of time, Quintrex would be changing certain features to suit the current market.”

Darrell experienced this firsthand when he got together with a few other dealers and suggested that the Renegade’s unique concave hull shape, which had previously

“They started making one with a straight-sided hull but with this unique concave shape underneath which brought the price down and they are now one of the most popular models!” he said.

Cannonvale Marine has been the Queensland Dealer of the Year twice for Quintrex – once in the 2005-06 financial year and then in 2012-13 - they are now hoping they can celebrate 50 years by winning the award for the third time.

“That would be magic!” said Leanne. Cannonvale Marine is celebrating their 50 years in business by giving away a 370 Outback Explorer with a 20-horsepower Honda engine that is valued at around $13,000.

Customers simply need to spend $50 instore to be entered into the draw.

“We have $50 gift cards, so if you don’t know what you want to buy at the moment you can always grab a gift card and then if you get a service later on in the year, we can take your $50 off that!”

Bowen-born Hugh Hanneman’s cerebral palsy had pulled his left foot to an almost 90-degree angle to the ground before two ankle and foot reconstructions this year remedied the issue – and left him wheelchair-bound for four months.

Hugh’s mother, Sally Hanneman, said her son had to “virtually relearn to walk” after the successful surgery, which was when they turned to a local personal trainer, Wes Bau.

“Hugh has been seeing Wes for the past two years now,” Mrs. Hannaman said.

“In that time, physically, he has improved enormously, and not only that but he loves it – he’d come every day if he could. This surgery took Hugh back somewhat, but what Wes has done for him in helping him while he was in the wheelchair is astounding.”

Mr Bau, owner and trainer at Wes Bau Personal Training, said the overall journey in those two years is just as astounding as Hugh’s efforts in relearning to walk.

“Over time, with the help of the operations and what I could contribute, Hugh has gained strength in his legs,” Mr Bau said.

“That’s given him confidence; he beams in here now, he’s full of humour when he walks in. It’s a good feeling for me, to have helped any kid. We never had this when I was growing up here, in Bowen. There wasn’t an opportunity for kids to find help through something like boxing.

“He’s never whinged, never gives in - he just gives me cheek.”

Hugh’s physical disability, cerebral palsy, pertains to movement, presenting in various symptoms, including exaggerated reflexes, floppy or rigid limbs and muscles, involuntary motions and poor coordination.

Each of these makes it difficult to pursue any kind of exercise – though not impossible. Mrs Hanneman said training with Mr Bau had been given the “green light” by doctors.

“They said to us, whatever he is doing, keep doing it,” she said.

“What he has been able to accomplish with this help is extraordinary, and what Wes helps him and other kids achieve is truly special.

“He should be an inspiration to other kids out there who haven’t had to struggle as he has.”

The most impressive progress Hugh has made is going from a two-kilogram dumbbell life to six – improving 300 per cent.

Hugh said, with how quickly he was advancing, he was closing in on being able to take Mr Bau on, toe-to-toe, in the ring.

“I tell him to put the gloves on every time we go in the ring,” Hugh said.

“I get him on the ropes already, so it’s not looking good for him.”

Staff members from Bowen’s The Grand View Hotel shaved their noggins and chins last Sunday for the World’s Greatest Shave annual charity event which raises funds for Australian families currently facing blood cancer.

The ‘Shavees’ – Peter O’Toole, Brett Crich, Aaron “Pumba”, Andrew Jackson, Stephen Knight, and Stephen Sherriden – were joined by a few brave patrons who donned the cape and went under the blades, shaving their heads for the good cause and raising a $1077.

The pub’s general manager Brett Crich said he and his duty managers have always strived to fundraise for charities and this cause was no different.

“The staff here are really, really good with charity – they’re always eager to support a

Bowen Community Council and Federal Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox planted the first of a garden’s worth of trees at Cooinda Family Centre last Thursday, March 16.

A small contingent of local families and dignitaries gathered for the tree planting ceremony which commemorated Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second’s Platinum Jubilee and was funded through a Queensland State Government Program.

The single tree planting event took place at the Centre’s current home on Williams Street, Bowen, with subsequent trees from the project to be planted at the new Bowen Community Centre towards the end of this year.

Chair of Bowen Community Council Christine Coventry said that the day was dedicated to the Queen’s 70 years of service to The Commonwealth.

“This tree planting honours her legacy,” Ms Coventry said.

“We are extremely grateful to be recipients of this grant, which has spent $15.1 million across Australia in the planting of trees in Her Majesty’s honour.”

Ms Coventry said the garden of trees at the

new Cooinda – to be located at the Bowen Community Centre, and which she has been assured by State Government will be completed by the end of this year – will be a spectacular garden for young families.

Federal Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox said he was extremely pleased to see another successful planting in memory of Her Majesty in Bowen and congratulated Bowen Community Council on being awarded the much-deserved $13,636 grant.

“This round of planting was extremely special and was a reminder to this community and its businesses of our amazing Queen Elizabeth the Second,” Mr Willcox said.

“Her Majesty was a tireless advocate for the regenerating through tree planting, and this new forest will be a reminder to Bowen of her spirit for years to come.”

Previous Queen’s Jubilee Tree Planting events in the Whitsundays have taken place at the Bowen Sporting Complex, where 160 Australian native trees are to be planted this year, and at Cannonvale State Primary School, naming their 27 trees the ‘Queen’s Jubilee Fruit Forest’.

Ten Indigenous Whitsunday students celebrated their successful receipt of school scholarships as part of continued reparations to the First Nations people of Australia.

The cohort of 10 Bowen State High School students were successful in Round 14 of The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) scholarships this year.

QATSIF was formed in 2008 to give Queensland’s Indigenous families increased educational choices and life opportunities, and was developed from the unclaimed stolen wages of Indigenous Australian elders.

The program offers scholarships worth $2000 each to help support senior First Nations students in attaining their Queensland Certificates of Education/ Queensland Certificates of Individual Achievement.

Over the past 4 years, Bowen State High School has had several senior Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students receive their QATSIF scholarships, with 16 QATSIF recipients currently studying at the school.

At a morning tea held in their honour, the students were reminded by QATSIF Co-

Dungeons And Dragons: Honour Among Thieves

If you put all the prosaic fantasy stuff into a soup (all the goblins and taverns and caverns, magic whatsits and wyverns and wizards) then served it in the Witch King’s helmet, you’d have this ghoulish goulash they call Dungeons and Dragons. An apocryphal, derivative, generic fantasy thing -that ends up, somehow, surprisingly edible -- in fact, it’s quite delicious.

I jest, though, in some respects. Dungeons and Dragons is not so simplistic and thieving as that. Because all those fantasy genre tropes, those cliches and old chestnuts, either came into being through the famed boardgame or were brought back in fashion by it.

For almost 50 years, Dungeon’s and Dragons has been a cultural touchstone for fantasy nerds everywhere, whether you’d played it or not. And now, for the second time in two decades, it has received a bigscreen adaptation: “Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves”. This time, it’s courtesy of John Francis Daley and Jonathon Goldstein who took pointers from the start of this review: they packed

the whole kit and kaboodle into this one.

They knew they didn’t need to reinvent the sword to make a good Dungeons and Dragons film. Stack in the traditional elements, throw in a few comedically charged dragons and singing, and watch the dice fly.

We follow the charming thief (and singing bard) Edgin, played by Chris Pine, and his band of unlikely, motley adventurers as they embark on an epic quest to retrieve a long-lost relic. What could be more regular than that? It would be strange if their charming adventure didn’t go dangerously awry (which it does) and they didn’t run afoul of the wrong people (tick that

box there).

By definition, this kind of film needs to look and be somewhat run of the mill. What Goldstein and Daley do to mitigate that is to throw in some curve-fireballs, a few D1 and D20 rolls on the dice, and some heartful moments punctuated by quippy humour. It all adds up to make Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, a ridiculous romp of fantastical proportions.

March
Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith in ‘Dungeons And Dragons: Honour Among Thieves’

Two tantalisingly talented Aussie television darlings of the early and mid-2000s will make a combined eight appearances at The Airlie Beach Hotel across April and May, rolling back the years to when they captured the hearts of the nation as finalists in X-Factor and Australian Idol.

As part of The Pub’s patented Acoustic Sessions – which weekly feature Whitsunday musos – the smooth songs of Idol Top Four finisher Dan England and X-Factor runner-up Andrew Wishart will take to the Bar Top Stage. England, who shot to stardom in 2005 as one of Australian Idol’s most popular finalists, will play on Friday, March 31 to April 3, in a solo-act showing, with Wishart – a storied career vocalist with X-Factor credentials – playing The Pub from May 4 to 7.

In the early oughts, England could be spotted for his trademark dreadlocks during his remarkable time on Australian Idol, where he was eliminated from the show by a mere 27 votes – the closest ever in Idol history, and not without its controversy.

After the highly successful run on air, England continued creating his remarkable story, honing his songs

and playing to tens of thousands of people in towns and cities across Australia, and now he’ll be at The Airlie Beach Hotel for the first time. England, a Queenslander through and through, said he’s excited to be heading up the coast to bring his smooth acoustic rock to the Whitsundays.

“What Idol gave me over the years was more than I could ever imagine,” Dan said.

“To be able to still perform after almost 20 years, putting smiles on people’s faces with classics and current hits, there’s nothing like it.

I can’t wait to bring that to Airlie Beach.

Then Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Andrew Wishart will arrive at The Airlie Beach Hotel to entertain the crowds as he has around Australia for more than 25 years.

With his mixture of classic songs from the ‘70s onwards, Wishart will remind audiences why he beat out more than 30,000 plus hopefuls to be Runner Up on the top-rating reality show, The X Factor.

He’ll smash out some of his tunes from ‘It’s Never Too Late’, which went top 15 in the Australian Aria charts, and all of the classics he’s

mastered since the early days of his musical journey at the age of 14.

Wishart said he “lives and breathes music, playing the guitar, and wowing crowds” with his dynamic vocals, interpretations, stage wit, and engagement.

Don’t miss these superstars when they arrive at The Airlie Beach Hotel over the next two months.

Gold For Proserpine Bowler At Blind Championships

AProserpine bowls player has won gold for his part in Australia’s recent overall win at the International Blind Bowlers Association Championships in Tweed Heads last week.

Scott Kinnear, a visually impaired Proserpine local, represented the country in both the Singles and the Pairs B4 Classification for the March 6 to 16 competition – and brought home a Gold Medal to the Whitsundays this week for his efforts.

Alongside younger brother Shane, who acts as Mr Kinnear’s director in the competition, assisting him in matters of distance and position of the bowls, Mr Kinnear played five rounds of the singles competition and ten in pairs, winning against England, Israel, New Zealand, and South Africa in singles.

Mr Kinnear’s selection as part of the Australian squad came after talent scouts saw his previous two years of performances in the Blind Section of the Disability Games, which led him to an invitation late last year to attend a training camp and selection trial.

“I started playing Bowls at the age of 11,” Mr Kinnear said.

“I kept playing as a kid all the way until 2004 when the degenerative issue in my eyes saw me lose sight in the left. Bowls have been a constant in my life.”

Proserpine Bowls Club secretary Heather Brown said she and fellow members of the club – at which Mr Kinnear plays regularly - weren’t surprised by the excellent result.

“Scott is a serious talent,” Ms Brown said.

“His ability to cope with a variety of green speeds and weather conditions is what set him apart; it was no surprise to us that he would earn a spot in the team and the hearts of so many of the spectators.”

Ms Brown said she was most impressed

by the level of teamwork between Mr Kinnear, his brother, and his pairs partner Sharon Dunk and her director.

“The level of sportsmanship was incredible to watch,” she said.

“I was particularly impressed by the trust that they placed in each other; it was something that they had in every single game.”

In the pairs, Mr Kinnear and Sharon put in stellar performances and were the standouts, beating teams from England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Hong Kong – they won with a clear +69.

Mr Kinnear said he never imagined he would win, but when it came down to the last end against New Zealand in the Singles finals, he finally began believing.

“That was the best game against New Zealand in the finals,” he said.

“Every game is tough, depending on who you’re facing up against. And the difficulty adds to the happiness – which

when I won the Gold was huge.”

Mr Kinnear will be sure to show off his Gold Medal to his fellow Proserpine bowlers at the local club for years to come.

Practice Flipping Makes Perfect For Outriggers

Another Big Cannonvale Cannons Week

SWIMMING

The Cannonvale Cannons hosted another successful Wednesday Club Night last week before leading into Saturday’s Club Championships.

Five Cannons also chased National qualifying times by participating in a time trial in Proserpine, with all making the cut: Jy Parkinson, Jacob Bell, Holly Perrin, Ehsan Helou, and Anisa Helou.

OUTRIGGING

Onlookers may have been confused while watching Whitsunday Outriggers Canoe Club participate in ‘Huli’ practice two weeks ago in the Whitsunday waters.

The local club embarked from Shingley Beach to New Beach, and whilst in the Pioneer Bay, tipped themselves out of their vessels.

Outrigger Club member Paul Tobias said a Huli is essentially when an outrigger capsizes, caused when the outer float leaves the water, rotating 180-degrees.

“This is a rare occurrence, as the ama [outer float] provides canoe stability, but when a Huli happens, all paddlers find themselves in the water,” Mr Tobias said.

“A couple of times a year, the routine for recovery needs to be practiced and last Saturday morning for Whitsunday Outriggers, it was Huli time.”

After a safety briefing at Shingley Beach from club president Terry Kemp and coach Glen Bray, the Huli crew across to New Beach to Huli.

Safety and teamwork were essential, with each member, depending on their seat in the canoe, allocated a task -- from collect-

ing the paddles, to righting the canoe and bailing out the water.

Four, six person ocean canoe crafts (OC6) went over during the Huli, leaving the outriggers drenched, but with good water safety and team work, four relatively speedy recoveries.

Mr Tobias said his own previous practice took place a month ago in surf off the Victorian beach of Torquay, “where the water temperature is quite different to the beautiful Whitsundays.”

“Well done to all 22 paddlers on Saturday,” he said.

And last Wednesday, senior representatives from Tassal visited Shingley Beach to view the latest addition to the outrigger fleet – a direct outcome of their sponsorship.

The recently launched six person Matahina ocean canoe is already a vital part of the OC6 training and racing canoes for Outrigger Whitsunday.

“Thanks to Heidi Smith, Senior Manager, Environmental, Social and Governance at Tassal, and Kylie Davies, Senior Manager Projects and Growth, for your company’s ongoing support,” Mr Tobias said.

Whitsunday Sailing Club Report

he Whitsunday Sailing Club’s weekly twilight races were hosted in perfect sailing conditions on Wednesday, with 16 yachts on the water. While the easterly breeze was ideal, it abated during the afternoon, dropping to just four knots by the time the last boats finished.

A close start put Wide Load (Shannan Hart) just ahead of QMS Ponyo (John Galloway) to take the Doyle Sails sponsored best start prize, but that was the only time that these two boats headed the fleet.

At the first rounding mark, a race long battle commenced between Smooth Criminal (Leo Rodriguez / Iyas Shaheen) and Bobby’s Girl (Mark Beale).

There was little to separate these two boats, with the lead swapping a number of times.

It was a lonely race for Treasure VIII (Rob Davis) in fourth place, while Twister (Kevin Fogarty) and Wide Load had another close battle further back.

While just 12 seconds separated the first two boats, it was Smooth Criminal who took the line honours and handicap prizes, with Bobby’s Girl and QMS Ponyo taking the minor placings.

Division Three saw Rossgo (Greg Hammon) lead the fleet away, but it was Matchless (Terrence Stevens who led the fleet at the first mark.

In the light conditions Aquatarius (Tom Parker) was in second place, despite the heavy boat usually struggling in those conditions.

The five Cannons will travel to the Australian Age Swimming Championships held during the April school holidays on the Gold Coast.

At the Wednesday night Club Night, Jy Parkinson and Jacob Bell were presented with special Queensland Development squad caps.

Three Cannons set new pool records at the Collinsville/Scottsville Amateur Swimming Carnival in weeks prior: Eloise Chegwidden, Jax Clayworth, and Isabella Pisaniello; and Jax Clayworth also set a new Cannonvale Club record last week for 50-metre Butterfly.

The Cannons commended Matilda Nicholes on taking out this week’s Swim Star Award, while this week’s Chocolate Awards were presented to Holly Perrin, Tora Delac, and Thomas Ganter for the best personal bests.

Upgrade Certificates were awarded to Thomas Ganter, Zane Clayworth, Lucas Korosec, Bianca Anderson and Zach Trefz.

Highlights from Club Night include: Top performers of the night based on personal bests were Alessa Penglase-Fortunato, Isabella Pisaniello, Indi Smith, Zach Trefz, Declan Dichiera, Evie Doherty, Bianca Anderson, Harry Crisp, Charlie Doherty, and Jack Ganter.

Harry Crisp, aged eight, swam a super 50-metre Freestyle in 56.34 seconds, a 3.59 second best.

Harris Delac, aged nine, swam an excellent 100-metre IM in 1.55.31 – a 3.84 second personal best. While brothers Zane and Jax Clayworth both swam fantastic times in their respective Butterfly events.

Congratulations to all the other swimmers who swam personal bests: Don Algie, Tora Delac, Miller Eaves, Thomas Ganter, Millie Groom, Ty Hayes-Williams, Gracie Laguna, Connor Lee, Stevie Lee, and Millah Walker.

A quiet day saw Wobbly Boot (Craig Piccinelli) behind Rossgo, while Shiraz (John Cable), Masquerade (Tom Vujasinovic), Lighthorse (Di Forster), and Norbert G (Ghigo Casalini) followed further back.

On corrected time, the honours went to Matchless, with Rossgo second and Aquatarius third.

Races continue every Wednesday from 4.30pm, with limited crewing positions available. Those wishing to participate as crew need to be at the club by 2.30 pm.

Whitsunday Women Shine on Saturday

FOOTBALL

Whilst the senior Men’s Premier sides struggled for numbers and results against Lions on the weekend, the Premier Women continued the winning form with a dominant performance against Mackay Rangers at Rangers Park.

The solid 4-1 win was punctuated by a stunning long-range goal by Willow Gaffney striking the ball well outside the box and finding the top corner.

Dani Kinnear set up another great goal with a perfectly placed corner. The win makes it two from two for the Premier Women.

The Reserve Women went down 3-1 to Rangers; a great effort for the many players

having their first season in the sport. Both Premier Men’s sides were short of players, but not effort, and took on strong Lions outfits and despite minimal substitutes, made the home team work for their spoils.

The Reserves were unable to hold onto an early lead, eventually losing 4-2, whilst the Premier Men conceded two early goals and were unable to reply in a 2-0 loss.

On Friday night the Division One and Two lads travelled to the Wanderers fields and continued their good form. Div Two looked likely to take their first win but ended with a 1-1 draw. Similarly, the Div One boys had a constant tussle and narrowly lost in the dying minutes, 3-2.

Under 13 Premiers faced a tough and aggressive Magpies outfit and despite a great effort went down 2-0.

A similar result for the U15 Division One side who couldn’t buy a goal despite many shots and near misses – both young sides have made a good start to the season and shown lots of promise.

The Under 15s continued their winning ways beating Magpies 5-0 and looking strong contenders for finals already.

Coach Peter Farrell was happy with how the club was tracking across all age groups: “Lots to work and build on but great attitude and effort throughout the club.

“This will be a great year again for Whitsunday United.”

There will be Club Championship games of Singles, B Singles and Pairs played this Saturday, 9.00am.

An expression of Interest sheet is on the club board - Pennants competition begins April 15.

On Sunday, March 26, the Club will host visiting bowlers playing social bowls and staying for a BBQ after the game. The combination will be provided at just $20 per person.

The club extends its wishes of luck to Wayne Handley, Michael Kinnear, Shane Kinnear, Grahame Kinnear, and Barry Saroglia, who are all playing in the Northern Challenge at North Mackay Bowls Club this coming weekend.

A special mention to Proserpine Bowl’s Club member Scott Kinnear, for his efforts, with the assistance of his brother Shane as his Director, at the International Blind Bowlers Carnival held at Tweed Heads.

Scott played in the B4 Section and came home with Gold Medals in both the Singles and the Mixed Pairs.

This weekend the Men play at Whitsunday Sports Park, with League One Men against Rangers on Friday night from 7pm and the Premier Squads against Wanderers on Saturday night from 5pm.

UNION

The new-look Proserpine Whitsunday Rugby Union (PWRU) Raiders team travelled to Leprechaun Park, Mackay, to face off against multiple teams at the Mackay Brothers home turf in a round-robin preseason carnival.

In 25-minute halves, the Raiders adapted to full-contact footy once more in games against Brothers, Kuttabul Camelboks, Cities, and Moranbah in a great day for all teams to mix and match their combinations ahead of Round One on March 25.

The PWRU Raiders first game against Brothers was, to be expected, a physical affair. The arm wrestle between the sides in the first 15 was hard-fought before Raiders found their rhythm, running out eventual winners 42-7.

Free-flowing footy was the order of the day, with the ball thrown around by the backs, as well as some big runs by the forwards.

The second game saw Raiders take on Moranbah Bulls in a high-spirited showing with some hard hits and strong runs from both, with Raiders eventually prevailing 27-5.

The tournament was an excellent showing for Raiders on the scoreboard, as well as an opportunity for the side to prepare for its first match against last year’s Premiers, the Bowen Mudcrabs.

A grand-final repeat at the Muddy’s home ground will be a trial by fire for Raiders, with kick off set for 3.30pm.

Mullers Lagoon Masterplan

We are developing a Mullers Lagoon Park Masterplan and we need your help! The Masterplan will be developed over several stages as grant funding becomes available in the next 5 – 10 years.

We are starting with a blank canvass and are seeking to collaborate with the community to gather ideas that will inform a concept design. We encourage you to read the fact sheets on our online engagement portal Your Say Whitsunday, which provide an overview of site constraints and suitable recreational infrastructure in each precinct to help inform feedback.

A Mullers Lagoon Park Masterplan design workshop is planned at the Bowen PCYC on Friday 24 March - 4pm - 6pm and is open for all to attend.

If you are unable to attend in person, you can also provide feedback by:

• Attending an Information stall after Easter holidays (location TBD)

• Completing an online survey or map your idea via the ‘Places tool’ on our Online Engagement Portal - yoursay.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au

Cape Edgecumbe Walking Trails

We are undertaking works to upgrade the Bowen Cape Edgecumbe Walking Trails late 2023 (exact dates for temporary section closures TBC). Segments of the trails have been weathered and need upgrade to make the trail safer and more attractive for users.

Initial focus areas are at the Horseshoe Bay end, near the Rotary Lookout (Stage 2, Stage 2A, Stage 2B) and Murray Bay Road to Rose Bay Lions Lookout (Stage 3).

The Trail will be re-built within the existing footprint, except for small areas where partial re-alignments will enable improved safety, track width, and mitigate erosion.

Works will involve:

• Fixing eroded sections, new drainage, handrails in steep locations, wayfinding signage and replacing damaged steps with pre-cast concrete steps.

• Pre-cast concrete steps, uniquely shaped for integration with the natural setting,

• Track widening to a minimum of 1.2m, with short sections of track widened to 2m to offer resting areas and ease of movement for users.

• Temporary trails to allow the movement of materials and equipment to work areas. Temporary trails will be closed to the public and re-vegetated with endemic vegetation following completion of the works.

See our fact sheet on our on our Online Engagement Portal - yoursay. whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au for more information.

These works are supported by the Commonwealth Governments Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. Further stages will be completed as grant funding becomes available.

Airlie Beach Boardwalk Upgrades

From 24 April - 9 June 2023 (6 weeks), Whitsunday Regional Council are undertaking works on the Airlie Beach Boardwalk between Coral Sea Marina and Coral Sea Resort that will result in the temporary closure of this section. The works are required to renew the asset, which is experiencing increasing numbers of broken boards due to its age and requires frequent oiling to withstand the coastal environment. The project benefits include:

• Increased width of the boardwalk by up to 1m

• Increased capacity to cater for a mix of cyclists, pedestrians and commercial operators

• Improved safety, and

• Significantly reduced ongoing maintenance costs for ratepayers as timber is replaced with a more durable composite fibre material.

To mitigate impacts:

• A detour is available for users to move between Airlie Beach and Cannonvale via Shute Harbour Road that will be appropriately signed closer to the project commencement date, and

• We are investigating additional Whitsunday Transit bus services to stop at Coral Sea Marina, to support all access movement between the Marina and Airlie Beach.

We acknowledge the significant impacts of the project and apologise for the inconvenience created by the necessary works. Please
