With Vanessa Harrower From Anytime Tours
In the heart of Mackay, a new venture is taking shape, offering a unique window into the city’s rich tapestry of history and culture. Anytime Tours, founded by Joanne Vanessa Harrower, known by her husband and friends as Vanessa, is redefining local tourism with her personalised, immersive walking tours. But what sparked this innovative idea?
It all began when Vanessa, a seasoned nurse with nearly two decades in healthcare, experienced compassion fatigue and sought a change of career and lifestyle. A transformative family holiday to Iceland planted the seed for her new career path. It was there, amidst Iceland’s stunning landscapes, that Vanessa envisioned the potential for walking tours in Mackay—a city with a rich history but limited tourist-focused experiences. Upon returning to Australia, the idea took root, further inspired by the lack of engaging activities for her visiting guests and a desire to stay connected with people while exploring a new field.
What sets Anytime Tours apart from other local tour operators is its commitment to providing intimate, educational experiences. Each tour is designed for small groups, offering a deep dive into Mackay’s history and culture. Participants are treated to access to at least two historic buildings and a delightful morning tea at a local café. Vanessa’s approach is not only about showcasing Mackay’s landmarks but also about
making the experience accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Tours are flexible, allowing customisation based on interests and timing, ensuring a personal touch that caters to various preferences.
The selection of routes and sites is a labour of love for Vanessa. She carefully curates each tour based on her own interests and those of her family. The routes are tested and refined to ensure accessibility for all, including prams and wheelchairs. This careful planning ensures that every participant, regardless of their mobility level, can enjoy the tour. Vanessa’s children have even served as a gauge for determining which sites are engaging, reflecting her dedication to making the tours appealing and inclusive.
Feedback from participants highlights the impact of Vanessa’s thoughtful approach. One memorable instance involved an international resident who booked a private tour to better understand their new home. The tour covered not just local history but also practical insights like parking sign meanings and language nuances. This experience underscored the broad educational potential of the tours, demonstrating their value beyond typical sightseeing.
The logistics behind Anytime Tours is a testament to Vanessa’s determination and the support from her family and friends. The process of setting up the business—from establishing
a website to sorting out booking systems—has been a learning curve. Vanessa’s ability to connect with people and her fascination with their stories has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey.
Incorporating Mackay’s natural beauty, history, and culture into the tours is a priority. By focusing on walking tours, Vanessa ensures an ecofriendly approach that enhances participants’ enjoyment of Mackay’s riverfront and outdoor spaces. The tours cover a range of topics, including significant buildings, local clubs, and historical events, providing a comprehensive overview of the city’s development.
Looking ahead, Vanessa envisions a future where Anytime Tours expands beyond Mackay. Plans include hiring additional guides and potentially offering full-day tours across Australia. The idea of using Mackay as a base for broader regional tours excites Vanessa, reflecting her commitment to growing the business while staying connected to her roots.
As Anytime Tours continues to evolve, Vanessa’s journey from a healthcare professional to a tour operator exemplifies the power of pursuing one’s passions and making a difference in a community. With each step, she is crafting a new narrative for Mackay, one that invites both locals and visitors to explore and appreciate the city’s unique offerings.

Jade has been with SeaLink Whitsundays since November 2022 and loves working for the company and within the tourism industry as a whole.
She began working in the tourism sector in 2014 as a reservations consultant, but it wasn’t truly where her heart belonged. In 2015 she asked her boss for an opportunity to work on the water and has been living the dream ever since.
Her favourite part about working in the industry is seeing the guests’ emotions and excitement as Jade and the SeaLink crew showcase the beautiful Whitsunday Islands.
“That’s what keeps me in the industry. Being a part of the experiences that bring these people pure joy,” Jade shared.
Jade also expressed that some people spend
their whole lives saving for a trip to experience the Whitsunday Islands and, knowing how special this moment is to them, makes her role even more meaningful. She says it’s always a “feel-good moment” to see the joy in their faces.
Originally from Sydney, Jade grew up in a small town near Cronulla. But after 10 years in the Whitsundays, the region now feels like home.
When it comes to family and friends she is blessed with the best and she loves spending quality time with them. With a Master 5, a Med 2, and a qualification as a dive master she is highly experienced in her role.
She loves being able to share her passion for the water with others, especially exploring new snorkel or dive locations, or simply marvelling at the beauty of the natural surrounds.

Celeste works for Ocean Rafting, however when she first moved here she worked as a bartender and barista, but it was her best friend and partner who inspired her to follow her passion to join the boating industry.
“They would come home every day saying how amazing their day was, and after about a year of that I thought I’ve got to do this too! So I did, and it was the best decision,” exclaimed Celeste.
Currently working as an Eco Host and Deckhand, Celeste loves taking guests out to the reef for snorkelling, up to the Hill Inlet Lookout, onto the silica sands of Whitehaven Beach and weaving through the Whitsunday Islands on the fast yellow boats. Along the coastline of Townsville lies a gem known to locals and tourists as The Strand, an effervescent waterside precinct capturing the very heartbeat of tropical North Queensland living. With picturesque views of Magnetic Island, palm-fringed pathways and no shortage of free activities, The Strand offers a perfect blend of relaxation and recreation.
Take a leisurely stroll along the 2.2-kilometre promenade encompassing The Strand, it’s a great way to see just exactly what it has to offer. This scenic walkway is popular among joggers, cyclists and families alike. With the pathway running parallel to the beach, it offers stunning views of the Coral Sea. Whether you’re up early to catch the sunrise or unwinding at sunset, the changing hues of the sky and the gentle sea breeze create a serene atmosphere that’s hard to resist.
To soak up some sun, the beaches along The Strand are the ideal spot. Settle down into the soft sand, find some shade beneath a palm tree, or wade into the cool waters, as the beaches are spotted with lifeguards on duty and netted enclosures for stinger seasons. It’s a great spot for families to watch their little ones splash in the gentle waves or build sandcastles along the seashore.
Another highlight, particularly among families with young children, is The Strand Water Park. This free water park offers interactive water features including tipping buckets, water cannons and fountains. The park’s colourful design makes it a hit with children, while shaded seating areas offer parents a place to relax. Nearby cafes and ice cream shops provide easy access to a nice treat after a day of play. The Rockpool, nestled in the northern end of The Strand, offers a unique
swimming experience – a man-made lagoon filled with seawater that is resistant to stingers. This stunning swimming hole provides a sheltered, safe and controlled environment for swimming, making it an excellent alternative to the open beach. The shallow areas are perfect for children, while seasoned swimmers can enjoy swimming the lengths of the Rockpool. Surrounded by landscaped gardens and picnic spots, it’s an ideal location for a relaxing day out. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy a meal with the stunning backdrop of Magnetic Island.
History enthusiasts should not miss Jezzine Barracks, also located at the northern end of The Strand. This historic military site offers a glimpse into Townsville’s past and has been transformed into a cultural precinct with landscaped gardens, public art, and informative plaques. The 15-hectare site includes the Kissing Point Fort, a remnant of Townsville’s defence history, and offers panoramic views of The Strand and Cleveland Bay.
Strand Park, centrally located along The Strand, is a hub of activity. With expansive grassy areas, a playground, and barbecue facilities, it’s an excellent spot for a picnic or a game of frisbee. The park also hosts many of Townsville’s outdoor events and festivals, including the popular Strand Night Markets. These monthly markets feature local crafts, food stalls, and live entertainment, creating a vibrant atmosphere that reflects the community spirit of Townsville. Even without an event, the park’s open space and ocean views make it a lovely spot to relax.
For those who enjoy fishing, The Strand Jetty is the perfect place to cast a line. Whether you’re an experienced angler or just trying it out, fishing off the jetty
is a peaceful way to spend a few hours. Even if you don’t catch anything, the experience of being out on the water, with the sun setting over the horizon, is rewarding. For non-fishers, a walk along the jetty provides stunning views of Magnetic Island and the surrounding waters, making it an excellent spot for photography, especially during golden hour.
The Strand’s outdoor fitness circuit is a fantastic free resource for those looking to stay active. Scattered along the promenade are various exercise stations where you can stop and work out while enjoying sea views. The fitness circuit includes equipment for strength training, stretching, and cardio exercises, catering to all fitness levels. Combine your workout with a run or walk along the promenade for a complete outdoor fitness experience.
Art lovers will also find something to enjoy with the public art installations scattered along The Strand. From sculptures to murals, these artworks add a creative touch to the beautiful landscape. Each piece tells a story about Townsville’s culture, history, or natural environment. Take your time to admire the art and learn about the stories behind each piece.
The Strand in Townsville is more than just a waterfront—it’s a vibrant community space offering something for everyone. With its free activities, from swimming and picnicking to history walks and art appreciation, The Strand invites visitors to experience the best of Townsville’s outdoor lifestyle. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, a day spent exploring The Strand will leave you with memorable moments indeed.
Just a quick ferry ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island, or “Maggie” as it’s affectionately known to locals, offers an affordable escape filled with natural beauty, adventure, and wildlife. This North Queensland gem is perfect for travellers eager to experience its pristine environment and rich history without spending a fortune.
Begin your adventure with a dive into the island’s underwater world by exploring the Nelly Bay and Geoffrey Bay Snorkel Trails. Both trails provide free, easy access to the vibrant marine life of the Great Barrier Reef.
Start at Nelly Bay, conveniently located near the ferry terminal. The snorkel trail is marked by surface floats, with underwater plaques guiding you through the coral gardens, colourful fish, and even the remains of the WWII-era ‘Moltke’ wreck. The shipwreck has become a thriving artificial reef, teeming with marine life.
A short walk, drive, or bus ride away, Geoffrey Bay offers a different snorkelling experience. The waters here are shallow, making it perfect for beginners. As you snorkel, keep an eye out for giant clams, stingrays, and maybe even a turtle. The bay is a protected marine park, ensuring the preservation of its diverse ecosystem.
Magnetic Island is home to a remarkable array of wildlife, especially koalas and rock wallabies. For a chance to see koalas in the wild, head to the Forts Walk. This four-kilometre round-trip hike not only offers stunning views of the Coral Sea but is also one of the best places to spot these iconic marsupials due to the flora spotted along the track.
As you walk along the trail, look up at the eucalyptus trees—koalas are often found resting in the branches. The Forts Walk also takes you past historic WWII fortifications, including gun emplacements and observation towers, offering both a historical and natural experience in one trek.
Later in the day, visit Geoffrey Bay to see the island’s rock wallabies. These small, curious creatures live among the rocks near the old barge ramp and are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. If you sit quietly, they might approach you, providing a close-up view of their playful antics.
For a deeper understanding of Magnetic Island’s past, stop by the Magnetic Island Museum in Picnic Bay. This small museum, housed in a former schoolhouse, offers a glimpse into the island’s rich history, from its Indigenous roots to its role in World War II.
The museum features exhibits on early settlers, tourism development, and military significance. A highlight is the collection of wartime photographs and artifacts, including maps and flags. The museum’s volunteers are knowledgeable and eager to share stories, making your visit both informative and enjoyable.
Magnetic Island’s natural beauty extends beyond its beaches and snorkel trails. The island boasts a network of walking tracks that lead through diverse landscapes—from dense forests to secluded beaches. These trails offer stunning views and peaceful spots to relax and soak in the scenery.
Whether you’re snorkelling in coral reefs, spotting koalas, or exploring historical sites, Magnetic Island is a destination packed with free experiences. It’s an ideal getaway for anyone looking to enjoy North Queensland’s best without spending much. With its natural wonders and rich history, Magnetic Island promises a memorable adventure for solo travellers, couples, and families alike.

Down the hill and back to Bowen’s foreshore is where you can explore Bowen Jetty. Bowen Jetty was the first established port in North Queensland when Bowen was recognised as an excellent natural harbour due to its sheltered location. To function effectively as a port Bowen Jetty had to be long, to stretch past the mud flats and shallow waters. In 1865 Bowen Jetty was constructed and in the following years has seen numerous renovations and extensions. It is now a tourist destination in its own right and open for long leisurely walks or a spot of fishing.
A trip to Bowen would not be complete without trying some delicious fresh seafood, and Birds Fish Bar serves exceptional cooked seafood. This man-made sculpture is a spectacular sight in the water and acts as eco-friendly coral nursery. Horseshoe Bay is also the last beach in Queensland that you can watch the sunset at, making it an ideal place to end your busy day.

Ever wanted a bird's-eye view of the spectacular Airlie Beach without boarding a plane? The Honeyeater Trail has you covered.
In July, my friends and I attempted the well-loved Honeyeater Trail. After trying not to be put off by the whispers about snakes and steep inclines, we decided to find out ourselves what this popular hike had to offer.
The walk begins at Kara Crescent, easily reachable by car or a pleasant 15–20-minute stroll from Airlie Beach’s Main Street. We chose to drive to the trailhead.
We started our hike at Kara Crescent around 11am, which turned out to be a mistake. By midday, the sun was blazing, and we were sweltering, despite it being winter. Head out early to avoid the heat or consider a sunrise hike with a head torch for the dark ascent.
The trail starts with a steep incline up a flight of stairs and continues uphill for most of the way, easing off in the final 1.8km where the path levels out, making it less strenuous.
The walk up, which is about 4.1km to reach the lookout, took us about an hour, with us walking at
a steady pace, and the full roundtrip will take you around 8.2km through the lush green rainforest of the Conway National Park. This also offers you the chance to see all the exceptional wildlife The Whitsundays has to offer.
During our journey, we were serenaded by the enchanting calls of Cockatoos and Kookaburras. While the trail was upgraded for all weather in 2021, wearing sensible footwear is essential. Although most of the path is gravel, there were some parts that were particularly muddy.
The views along the walk up are limited, however,
what we saw when we arrived at the top, was more than worth the wait. The panoramic views stretched across most of Airlie Beach. The turquoise waters of the UNESCO-listed Great Barrier Reef resembled a picture postcard, glistening under the sun against the flourishing greenery of the bushlands. You could even spot some of the islands out in the horizon. Undoubtedly, this was the most breathtaking view I've encountered in Airlie Beach.
After capturing our well-deserved pictures at the top and witnessing a man sadly lose his drone to a tree, we began our descent. What goes up, must come down, and the way back
seemed marginally easier than our gradual ascent.
Despite not being lucky enough (or unlucky in some people’s eyes) to spot any snakes on our journey, we did come across a Goanna which was frantically climbing a tree trying to get out of our path. It was lovely to stop and watch it as it gradually blended into the trunk.
There are a few things to note if you plan to trek the Honeyeater Trail. Firstly, before attempting the ascent make sure you have lots of water and food with you, it's a 2-hour hike and you will get peckish! Another important point to consider is to wear light
By Ruth Puddefoot
clothing or sportswear. We felt quite hot even in winter, so the summer months are likely to be even more uncomfortable.
Thirdly, make sure you bring sunscreen, although the path is mainly shaded by the trees, the viewpoint is very much in the sun.
Lastly, enjoy yourself. This is one of the best views I have seen in Airlie Beach, and it really is worth it. My friends and I had a great time, shared lots of laughs and were all stunned when we reached the top. If you are in Airlie on holiday, or a local looking for a new hike, make sure the Honeyeater Trail is top of your list.
